It throws alot at you right away and dosent really explain much in the beginning and it can be intimidating therefore making the opening hours a little slow but you will have your "everything clicks" moment if you continue down the main Quest for a little while.
the space map can take a little while to get used to, random NPCs look ugly the space travel might not be what some expect.
Space travel is more mass effect then it is
    no man's sky
But still the universe bethesda has built is an immersive one, it is bethesdas most polished game to date and honestly possibly their best game to date.
If you like western RPGs and older Bethesda games you owe it to yourself to give the game a try

This is the only game to give me the “Skyrim-feel” since Skyrim. Bethesda knocked it out the park with this one. If you go into it expecting a seemless space sim, then you won’t like it, because that’s not what it is. It is, rather, a bethesda RPG, if you’re a fan of their formula (which I very much am) then you’ll love this game.

The stories that are being told are simple amazing and the best work bethesda has done. Everytime i stop i want to play more and get back in. there is so much to do and the game is huge. For every quest you complete you get 4 more in return. also the game has a lot of hearth and it can be very cozy and immersive. And the attention to detail is insane. You can see they hired the dude from the skyrim clutter mod because every item you can pick up looks amazing. I am currently collecting monster plushies and coffee mugs. But...

It does struggle on my pc. With a 3700x and a 2080TI i thought i could handle it. I was wrong. i can barely get 60fps on 1440p on high and ultra with fsr in outside zones. Still even at 30 fps its playable and you dont really notice it. the graphics do look good but i feel not that good for bringing my 2080ti to its knees already. The other gripe i have is the exploration and space travel. I expected more of a space sim. But it is really a bethesda rpg. think about skyrim or fallout in space. Once i accepted that the exploration became fun again. All the other critisim like facial expressions and all the other things you hear really dont bother me.

Anyway, i love the game. the easter eggs and attention to detail is amazing and you should experience this.

In this instance, it's a Bethesda game which is attempting to be peak Bethesda (in a positive way), and in that it succeeds.

Slowly unlocking and tinkering with weapons through the modification system has also been very satisfying, same with the suit and pack system. Ship customization, while I haven't dove as deep into, is also well thought out and allows for a huge variety of different builds. its not my GOTY, BG3 already locked that up. but fills a particular niche that isn't found elsewhere, and I keep wanting to come back and play more. In some area's the game feels like GTA in space, in some other like Fallout in space. Another cool thing is space combat and docking your ship, entering spaceships and killing pirates. I'm slightly disappointed in space travel, as the game doesn't seem to have seamless space exploration, but this isn't a major problem for me. I haven't experienced any problem with the tiles. The regions are massive, they feel as big as GTA4's Liberty City...in one of my play sessions it took me 40+ minutes to reach a space station on Mars...from the borders of Cydonia City....i expected the infamous boundary message but didn't. In all fairness, even seamless exploration is a topic of discussion, you can technically fly to planets if you want but it takes hours (there's an example of a Youtuber flying to Pluto, it kinda works..kinda doesn't..). Other things i love about the game, FPS/third Person shooting gameplay..ship building, base building, doing story missions & side-missions, exploring lifeless planets and taking photo's. The game has it all. I think Starfield is a great game but has some minor flaws..this is why i can't give the game a 10/10. My overall score for Starfield is 9/10. Expand

But also abuses of ray tracing, everything in Atlantis looks like ceramic

Thus I can't believe so awful optimization, it can run al least 30% better. There are another games with much better quality and less load game screens. I'm getting almost the same fps as in series S but another games runs at double

-2 Lacks of minimap and procedural generation. We have seen much better procedural generation in another games like No Man's Sky

And if you would have said that their first new IP in 25 years would be a space game, I would also probably laugh because obviously it would have been either a new Fallout game (which only came out 2 years later) and then the next Elder Scrolls game. At the time, this was Their bread and butter, release an Elder Scrolls game, the release a Fallout game. Boy would I have been so embarrassed now if that had happened. Of course 2016 is when the rumors began with the copyright of the name Starfield being made and the subsequent subreddit being created 7 years ago in September 1st (the day Early Access started for those of us who bought the Premium or Constellation editions). 2018 brought the reveal at E3, and along the way we were drip-fed more info between 2018 and 2022. Now, after all this time it’s here, and it’s worth checking out.

This game, make no mistake, is not perfect. It had some of the usual Bethesda jank. It doesn’t look the best, it doesn’t run the smoothest, the character models leave a lot to be desired at times, and boy oh boy do some of the systems feel like they were lifted out of the now 12 year old Skyrim, tweaked for this setting, and plopped right in to this game. Creation Engine 2 feels old. And the Exploration, well, let’s just say No Man’s Sky or Star Citizen it is not. But that’s okay, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be good, and this game is definitely good.

If you come into this game expecting something like Skyrim or Fallout in Space, and without the aspirations of being a No Man’s Sky or Star Citizen killer, then you will likely have a good time. The Main Story from what I have played of it so far is good, and I will leave it at that to avoid spoilers. However, side content is the name of the game here. Sometimes I feel like I can’t go 10 minutes without getting yet another side quest or activity to do that is added to my list of side quests and activities I have yet to do. The content just seems to never end. Some of these activities and side quests it can be repetitive. However, others will take you down interesting rabbit holes and following them can be rewarding.

Now, if we move past the quests alone, you also have hundreds of planets to explore, and while there are boundaries and other things that break immersion such as not being able to fly down to the planet on your own, it isn’t all bad either. The landscapes you get to actually visit are larger than the map of Skyrim in all the the cases I have seen, and you can go to multiple on each planet (I believe the max limit is 4-5). Once again, this isn’t No Man’s Sky, this is a BGS game, and it’s already taxing enough on your system. Now, if the exploration of this game doesn’t seem all that great to you, the combat is pretty decent, better than any BGS game before. You can of course find many amazing and powerful weapons in the world, or you can research mods to improve stock weapons or change modded weapons (the term mod here is different, as I mean you can customize your weapon with add-ons that improve the weapons stats and usefulness in certain situations). The enemy AI isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough to have a decent time in combat. Speaking of research, you can research a number of things for crafting and outpost buildings, using resources you find and collect in the world to complete the research. Use this research to your advantage to craf items to use to restore health, cure any ailments you might have, whether it be physical bodily harm inflicted on you or illnesses that you might receive. Or maybe research and craft items to use for base building and go build an outpost to keep your NPCs at and also use to generate money. Even create cargo shipping links between outposts on different planets.

Speaking of, we can’t forget the shop building. While I haven’t gotten far enough to do either outpost or ship building, what I have seen of it from others looks fun and I can’t wait to get late game to where I am earning credits to do these sorts of activities.

Finally, let’s talk bugs, polish and performance. This game is demanding, it needs powerful hardware to run well, and even then even the best of the best computers can struggle at times. The limit to FSR2 only without mods also hurts performance for those who are on Nvidia cards. Outside of these concerns, performance can be decent with the right hardware. As far as bugs go, there are some, but wow, there are wayyyy less than what we had in previous BGS titles, and hopefully this trend continues for BGS. Overall, based on my rather brief playthrough so far, id give this game a solid A-. If you have Gamepass, give it a shot, it’s included with your membership after all, and if you love it, go to Steam to buy it so that way you can get full mod support.

Played 40 hours at the time of this review. I'll be playing this until the release of The Elder Scrolls 6 and beyond.

If you are a space enthusiast and liked Skyrim or Fallout 4, this game is a blast. Lots of handcrafted content, a higher level of polish than past Bethesda games, better writing/story, better animations, better shooting, improved RPG systems with perks and dialogues.

The smallest of the 4 cities I have explored so far is larger than any city in Skyrim or Fallout.

The game starts out slow, the first 5-10 hours serve as an introduction to the systems and characters, then STUFF happens.
This game supports mods like their other titles, and this will give a very long life to this game.

You can fly your ship in space near a celestial body, where you can fight other ships (or talk to them), enter in explorable space stations, discover quests.
It is also possible to dock with an enemy ship to steal it.

Gravity is different on each planet and this affects how far you can jump and use the jetpack. There are zero gravity environments in space.

You can build outposts like in Fallout 4 and you can even create your own spaceship completely from scratch, which can also be explored and interacted on the interior.
There is deep crafting and weapon/armor customization.

As side content there is the possibility to land on all planets (except on gas giants, obviously) and freely explore them (procedurally generated maps that are more or less as large as the Fallout 4 map).

There are classic glitches and crazyness due to the Creation Engine, but less this time. Most are harmless.

Making the cities so big led to compromises in the realism of the NPCs (I no longer see routines like in Skyrim, for example at night the NPCs stay in the shops, probably because the local time changes between one planet and another and it would have been a pain to have to wait every time).
There are many generic npcs in the capitals that simulate crowds, a bit like in Cyberpunk 2077 or GTA.

    Downsides:

-PC optimization is NOT good. If you want to play it at a stable frame rate (60fps) you MUST have a powerful PC with an SSD.

-The enemies's AI is broken, even in Fallout 4 was better.

-Moving from one planet to another as well as landing and taking off require frequent loading screens (fortunately they are very fast).

PSA: IT IS NOT a space simulator like Elite Dangerous nor something like No Man Sky, but it is a role-playing game with procedurally generated exploratory components as a backdrop.

Outdoor environments can vary between fine and pretty good, but oh my god, I love just walking through the buildings and ships, filled with a million items you can pick up. It's a slow burn AND PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU TRY EVERYTHING YOU CAN IN THIS GAME, There is so much content that is almost hidden or not told to you in this game that you have to look for and discover yourself. The game doesn't hold your hand too much in that aspect.

Ship combat and traversal is great (make sure you invest in perks). Although some may be disappointed it's not as deep as other similar games, its not as shallow as people think (there are ways to roleplay to make it more realistic, such as using the scanner to traverse a system without going through menus).

Performance is pretty hit or miss and will hopefully be fixed with patches (there are also some mods that can help, particularly for Nvidia GPUs). It works well enough but its not great. Ran on Ryzen 5600X and RX6700XT and had a mostly solid 60fps at high/ultra settings, do some tweaking here to squeeze fps.

Yes there are bugs, but i havnt run into any glaring bugs, just NPCs sometimes floating or jerking around a bit. Absolutely not a deal breaker at all.

There is to much to content to fit in a short review, just play it, please. Its a bit of a slow burn but please, just let it do its thing and you will love it!

For sure there's no other game like this one, it's one of a kind, you won't find a story driven rpg on a massive scale like this one anywhere else, just remember it's not a space sim and it's not No Man's Sky, it's not even trying to be it, so don't fall into those random comparison traps.
If you have doubts it's on game pass, just try it, the main story is less than 20 hours and it's the best Bethesda has ever done in my opinion.

Must say i love the game so far and it has the feeling of Mass Effect to it.

First out don't go in to the game expecting Everspace 2, Star Citizen, No Man Sky and so forth It's exactly what you can expect if you go from what Bethesda themself have said in Starfield Direct There can be a bit many loading screans but they are quick so that's okay and I have experience 3 minior bugs so far

It’s a solid game that I especially recommend to those who like Bethesda style RPGs, but I was initially disappointed—it didn’t give me the same sense of awe or a sense of urgency like Oblivion/Skyrim or Baldur’s Gate 3 did, though it’s a very different premise so I suppose it makes sense. Still, I’m having a blast playing it. I’ve put in over 50 hours and feel I’ve barely scratched the surface—it’s an enormous game with so many quests and options to branch out. For that alone it’s well worth it.

    Things I like:

    - Gorgeous settings with incredible attention to detail. You can feel the love the developers put into every hand-crafted explorable area. There are so many surprises too—some that made me laugh out loud.
    - The freedom to do whatever I want, go in any direction I want, with less hand holding than previous titles.
    - Ship and outpost customization.
    - The fast travel system. I didn’t want a space sim, so the way you can select your mission destination from the cockpit and go was a great design choice in my opinion that gives me the feeling of navigating through space.
    - The option to explore new worlds with the star map via the menu or through the navigation table on my ship works well and I find the system intuitive. Load screens take a couple of seconds and don’t bother me at all.
    - Discovering lore, loot, secrets, and quests by exploring new areas/worlds or overhearing NPC conversations.
    - Some of the writing and voice acting within the main/faction questlines is the best Bethesda has ever done.
    - Plays as smoothly at 1080p on my Xbox Series S as it does on my Ryzen 5 5600x/3070ti PC (graphics are better on PC of course)

    Things I don’t like:

    - The world’s graphics are beautiful, the characters and NPCs not so much.
    - It takes too long to feel invested in the game and story.
    - A diminished sense of high stakes. Some decisions do matter, and some choices have consequences, but for most questlines I don’t feel like my choices have any real impact.
    - Some of the NPC dialogue feels wooden and stilted, and some side quests feel like filler rather than purposeful.
    - Encumberment. I get overloaded so fast I have to leave a lot of loot behind and selling stuff requires I stop questing/exploring and returning to vendor. I don’t understand why Bethesda thought this would be a good idea. It’s the antithesis of fun.

I was torn between giving this an 8 or a 9, but I’ve settled on 9 because despite some flaws, it’s such a huge game world that caters to different play styles and it will have great replay value. That and for me, it’s been so much fun. Many hours of entertainment!

My favorite type of games are the ones that drop you into an interesting universe and say, “Go. Do anything and everything you can think of. React to this world and it’ll react to you.” That is why, for a long time, Skyrim has been my favorite game ever made. That is also why Starfield has been a fantastic experience, and a game I will continue playing for a very, very long time.

Bethesda has created amazing worlds for people to immerse themselves in; and Starfield is no exception. The visuals and animations are much improved from Fallout 4, with more dynamic facial expression and hand movements. The textures and lighting are beautiful here as well, with a really unique vibe. I can go and do so many different and wide-ranging things, live in a dream home, build my own custom spaceship, marry a character I’ve gone on interesting adventures with, build an outpost on a random moon, say hi to my parents, and join the military. You are absolutely getting your money’s worth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I'm 82 hours in the game and i loved 80 of them. I needed some time to get in, but once i understood everything, I had a blast. I can't wait for DLCs and just more content. The story was great. The loading screens didn' bother me that much. With a fast SSD they last only about 3 or 4 seconds. I don't regret buying the collectors edition.

Very good game you get lost in. Unfortunately the game was extremely over hyped to be a space-sim like star citizen or no mans sky (which is partly the marketing's fault) If you like Bethesda games, and games with a mind blowing amount of content in terms of story, star field is a very good game, and not at all deserving of the 4.5 the game currently has on here.

    - Starfield's launch is perhaps 10 times better than CP's launch, CP might fix the game 3 years later.
    - Starfield is not showing you fast-forwarded story and characters cut from the game 1h in.
    - Starfield's vehicles are very customizable, CP doesn't have any of that.
    - Starfield actually has multiple choices if you want to kill or ally the quest characters.
    - Starfield didn't promised multiplayer. CP cuts the multiplayer.
    - Starfield's world is detailed, even the most basic NPC have appropriate clothing for their role and they even react differently based on your quest and status where on CP is completely random.
    - Starfield's loot in buildings make sense to their rooms where CP just have it randomly like the NPCs.
    - Music is the generic, overall CP has better.
    - Story is ok, fits and plays way better than in CP. Again, 'play' not 'watch'. In CP your character's status stay the same. In Starfield you obtained a 1% rank in the whole city, taking a job from a random cop, he will look up to you not down like in CP. Story in CP? Dystopian future where governments and companies have almost total control allow a rockstar drunk boy to operate a heli and nuke to blow the city. You guys don't understand what a dystopian world actually means, unless CP's story was poorly applied, because there's a book I believe.
    - Combat is fine, CP wins, they have dismemberment and melee feels better.
    - Skills own in Starfield, actual RPG game, where CP rapidly changed to an adventure game.
    - Planets are cool compared to No man's launch state, no I don't wait 10 years for some liars to deliver a game, but that's ok, the 500 people that rate 3/10 which means the game isn't a functional game will wait even more.
    - Starfield will have a DLC, CP promised free dlc, but yet we paid full 60$ for a broken and hollow game in order to pay another 30$.
    - Performance is bad, 60 fps, 1080p, at best on medium settings 2080, but that's ok, I will upgrade to 4090 just for this game. All this possible because of these lovely haters who probably lie about the fact of 'playing Skyrim/Fallout' in the past'? CP wins here.
    - Starfield is not on PS5, but CP still loses as that game was horrible and updates were required for it to be playable.
    - Starfield offers a really neat New Game Plus, CP offers.. a cutscene.
    - Starfield offers apartments and mansions and your ships, CP offers 9, after 2 years after launch.
    - Starfield companions they are helpful with loot, carrying and even with the dialogues.
    - Starfield doesn't offer sex scenes, that's ok, we leave that to degenerates.
    - Starfield's police system is way better than your cop donut eater spawning next to you, there's also a bounty system.

I have 60 hours of only doing quests, and still have left I assume a third of the game to go regarding questing and after that comes new game plus.

The roleplaying in starfield is not just limited to the role that your character plays within the story, the game allows you to truly be a person within a world. Baldurs gate 3 was a tremendous acheivement, but leaving the beat and path and being an employee of the world is not possible, in starfield all of it is possible. A game is not defined by individual design choices, it is defined by the sum of it's parts.

I dont care what the marketing was for the game or about features that people think every space should have. I care that I keep wanting to come back to a universe that is addictive and beautiful. No game is perfect but this one is almost perfect for me.

One of the standout features of Starfield is its open-ended exploration. The game empowers you to captain your very own starship, allowing you to chart your unique course through the cosmos. Whether you're an intrepid explorer in search of new horizons, a savvy trader looking to amass wealth, or a gallant defender of the galaxy, the choice is yours. The freedom and agency you have in shaping your character's destiny is liberating and distinguishes Starfield from other titles in the genre.

Of course, no space exploration RPG would be complete without a robust spacecraft system, and Starfield delivers in spades. You can customize and upgrade your ship to match your preferred playstyle, from nimble, agile vessels designed for high-speed dogfights to colossal capital ships brimming with firepower. The ship combat mechanics are exhilarating, and the sense of mastery you feel as you engage in epic space battles is immensely satisfying.

Yet, the heart of any RPG lies in its characters, and Starfield introduces a memorable cast of diverse and fascinating personalities. From enigmatic alien species to charismatic fellow adventurers, each character you encounter feels like a genuine inhabitant of this cosmic tapestry. Building relationships and forming alliances with them is not only a key gameplay element but also one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience.

What truly sets Starfield apart is its commitment to scientific accuracy. While it takes creative liberties in envisioning a future among the stars, it also strives to adhere to the laws of physics and the known principles of space exploration. This attention to detail adds a layer of authenticity that's both educational and awe-inspiring. It's a rarity to find a game that can entertain and educate simultaneously, and Starfield accomplishes this feat admirably.

As you venture deeper into this expansive universe, you'll uncover a multitude of quests, mysteries, and challenges that will keep you engaged for countless hours. The game's longevity is further enhanced by a thriving online community, where you can collaborate with other players, join factions, and participate in epic space battles. It's a testament to the game's enduring appeal that, years after its release, it continues to evolve and expand.

In conclusion, Starfield stands as a radiant testament to the zenith of modern gaming achievements. Its amalgamation of awe-inspiring visuals, immersive storytelling, open-ended exploration, and scientific accuracy positions it as a true gem within the genre. Starfield beckons you to embark on an unforgettable journey through the cosmos, where every choice you make has cosmic consequences, and every discovery is a marvel. So, heed the cosmic call, and prepare to immerse yourself in the finest space exploration RPG of our era. Get around it, for Starfield is a gaming experience that's truly out of this world!

Don't go into this game expecting No Man's Sky or Elite Dangerous, this Is not a space sim. It is a Bethesda style RPG set in space, and it does that perfectly, it is a passion project through and through. Of course there are still issues present, as with all games, but a lot of them are being played up massively. Character models? 99% of the time are perfectly fine. The invisible walls around each area is something you'll interact with rarely, with each area taking 1.5 hours of moving to cross from one wall to the next. Base and ship building are both fun gameplay loops, and can easily take up hours of playtime if that's what you want to do. Exploration is very fun too, and while a lot of the barren planets become quite similar after a while, there is always something to do om each planet/moon, with loads of random encounters too, which the same can be said in space. There are endless role-playing opportunities, want to be a pirate attacking settled space? Go for it. A smuggler? Yes, you can play however you want.

And when mod support releases, the longevity of this game will skyrocket with endless potential.

Starfield is the culmination of everything Bethesda has been building in the past 20+ years, and it shows.

This is one of the most epic expansive stories yet from Bethesda!

Lighting in the game has come a long way since the last generation, and as a result many seemingly inoccuous items can look stunning.
There are bugs, but they are few and far between and not game breaking.
30fps would be disappointing if it weren't for the perfect motion blur making it feel so smooth. It's not perfect, but if an epic, expansive adventure is what you're looking for, it's close...

Big cities like New Atlantis, Neon and Akila have more side quests and stories than the main quest itself, and that's amazing. The battle system is very good, I believe thanks to the Doom team. The inventory and skills menu is very easy and simple to use. The map is complex and takes time to get used to. Optimization isn't good, the engine doesn't make things fluid as it should. The indoors and landscapes of the planets are beautiful, but the NPCs are ugly (except named characters). The game deserves 9 because it is not easy to create such a vast and rich universe. In my opinion, it delivers what it promises. Expand

At first, I thought the game was tedious and too complicated with all of its new mechanics but I decided to give it a couple more hours to see what the game is truly about. After about 30 hours, I love this game. This is a Bethesda game, so there will always be a bit of jank, but that also means we have a big sandbox to play in.

Overall a very good game so far. Multiple playthroughs incoming.

Companions can be hard work like in all Bethesda games and the space side of the game does feel a little lackluster at times. Overall though for the size of the game this is a forgivable drawback and hasn't spoilt the over 80hrs I've invested into this game. Expand

Absolutely loving it, took a few hours to grip me, but now I can't get enough. Really enjoying the different planets, random quest lines that take hourssss to finish, and my companions. Only let down is the outpost storage systems, but might be able to improve those with skill points

Starfield is a bethesda game through and through and space just happens to be the setting the game takes place in.

Story, Characters, Questing is the main objective of this game. Not ship building. Not walking around random planets. Not all this other dumb crap people are complaining about that was never ever advertised in the game to begin with lol

Also the reviews from playstation fans in super embarrassing. If u like bethesda games and are familiar with their style then u are going to love this game. If u arent a fan of their style, then this game clearly not for you

So complaining about that is just embarrassing. Why are people checking things online about stuff they don’t enjoy…I don’t know.

But what I do know is that this is oblivion/fallout4 in space. Thats the best way to describe it. The quests are well written, good voice acting and engaging. Ur characters combat will become more fulfilling the higher level you get, and once the game starts flowing its one of the most immersive experiences u may have:

Other things people arent being honest about :

Yes there is loading screens. They are 2-3 seconds MAX

    I played in early access.
    This game is great :
    - there are so many things to do (space fight, crafting, build your base, stole a ship)
    - interactions with NPC are great, you may hear a conversation, decide to join the conversation and depending on what you say you might get interesting new missions.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
