Expand

From the good except that more or less pleasant shooting and some quests are not bad, well and in the end the game is monumental, I think in the game you can spend a lot of time. Expand

In my opinion they should have focused on aiming higher than Skyrim/Fallout 4 instead of trying to emulate those experiences exactly. The whole thing is a little too familiar and definitely a letdown when you consider the years and years of hype. If anything this game feels old fashioned in 2023.

If you're okay playing a new version of Skyrim or Fallout then this is exactly that! Definitely big and expansive just like those games were. You can put a lot of hours into Starfield if you don't get bored and bounce off first.

Don't buy a Series X just for this! If you already have GamePass then of course you've already downloaded it and played it for yourself.

Gameplay wise, as I mentioned before, the start is VERY boring, and combat is pretty bad as well, the ai of most enemies is non-existent, and difficulty seemingly only increases enemy health, making them incredibly spongy, sometimes requiring more than 5 mags, just to kill one enemy, this makes the ammo economy absolutely terrible, I often have to just melee everyone because I run out of ammo.

One more notable, thing, is the inability to fast travel directly from a planet’s atmosphere, to a position on it, without going through a few menu. (You can fast travel from planet to planet, and solar system to solar system without menus though).

-AI: An "artificial intelligence" where the "intelligence" part is notably missing.

-Difficulty: When you ramp up the game's difficulty, all you get is enemies with more health that turn into bullet sponges.

-Spaceships: Extremely simplistic spaceship combat, plus you can't travel freely. This makes spaceship customization wholly irrelevant and merely cosmetic.

-Content: Many entirely empty planets, and yes, I understand it's a game set in space, which is mostly void... but above all, it's a game. And a game with so much empty content is a mediocre game. Period.

-Narrative: Nothing standout. Characters lack charisma.

    - Technical Aspects: Poor optimization. No native HDR support. No native DLSS support. No Ray Tracing. Technically, it's like a 2010 Indie game.

Despite everything, the game is enjoyable, and I'm having a good time playing it. However, I can't turn a blind eye to Bethesda's laziness and complacency.

On the other hand, the game world is empty, according to Bethesda, who says that out of 1000 planets, only 100 of them have life and those 100 do not have that many details. No, it even lacks the things that always made Bethesda RPGs so special, as the exploration and secret wonders to discover are greatly reduced in comparison to older Bethesda titles. It can absolutely be fun and addictive but has so many flaws and unfulfilled potential, that it essentially becomes both, fun and disappointing in equal measures, when it’s fun it’s an 8 and when it’s clunky and boring it’s a 5 so I can sadly only give it a 7, especially since performance even on my PC is really bad for a last gen looking title. Yes, it has bugs, but they're not significant enough to ruin the experience. Initially, I was going to give it an 8 out of 10, but the facial expressions really bothered me, especially since I had just come from playing another RPG that handled them so well. Therefore, a 7/10 rating feels more appropriate to me.

In conclusion, it has its flaws, but if you like or love Bethesda games, you'll definitely enjoy it, making it worth the full price on PC. If you can play it with a pass, even better.

However, the game is extremely lazy and incompetent when it comes to other aspects, close to 3/10. This includes the story which is in my opinion 0/10 and the world building and level design. There IS SO MUCH that can be done in space, but the combat is barely different from fallout 4/76. Every conversation with NPCs results in a fetch quest. I s*it you not, in 1 hour in new atlantis I stumbled upon 5 different fetch quests including getting a coffee for a Janitor. What in the actual crap is this? The writers of this game are absolutely incompetent, it feels like a clone of the previous games writing-wise. And the role-playing aspects aren't improved upon since Fallout 3. In fact in FO3 you could role-play more effectively. The quest designers and writers need to be FIRED. The UI design IS ATROCIOUS. It gives me anxiety.

This game could perfectly be called Fallout 5. It's as if they had copied things from Skirim, Fallout and other games, with the same sense of missions and mechanics with their procedural worlds that I don't like at all. But not everything is bad, the main missions are entertaining, the creation of the ships, which is their strong point, and the "linearity" that you can have in this game. I emphasize the worst thing is its AI, the truth is that it is the part that most disappointed me, no, being an rpg it must have some difficulty it doesn't matter if you increase the difficulty the nocs don't change their water they are just like a sponge from which they absorb a great amount of bullets haha .. I wanted to like this game. But it's MID. No amount of Xbots can change the course of history. Multiple high-budget game this year under the Bethesda banner leaving Microsoft holding the Bethesda bag.

Todd Howard should be ashamed of himself and his career. They gave us nothing new. Old engine, old crafting style, old dialogue system, outdated ui, outdated inventory, outdated graphics, outdated as hell combat gameplay, typical outdated crappy Ai npc, and more loading screens than I have ever seen.

They could have cared, I mean so many fkn years spent developing this game. Were they actually working on Starfield? Where did their budget actually go?
Imagine being a Destiny player and fed up with the NeverChanging seasons. Mid after mid after mid.
That's how it feels to pick up and play Starfield.

Who develops a game where the first 15 hours are absolute **** boring, and tedious?

The only thing I love about this game is that on PC I can toggle Command Mode and remove the self-destructive Weight Capacity mechanic.

The saddest thing about this entire situation is this-
Xbox owners have been getting spoonfed games that have been marketed as great for so long that they no longer recognize what makes a game great. So while the rest of the world got to play amazing games like BG3, God of War, Last of Us, (games that pushed the bar for story, graphics, and game design) they were too busy drooling over the likes of Redfall and Starflop.

No amount of pop-up review sites being given advance copies and $50 can change the fact that this game is 20 years old in design with a half-assed paint job.

Now I see why Microsoft gave this game away.

Firstly I'll be comparing the game to another Bethesda game, Skyrim. Compared to Skyrim, the cities in Starfield are just as good, if not better. However, this comes with a price.

Firstly I'll be comparing the game to another Bethesda game, Skyrim.

Compared to Skyrim, the cities in Starfield are just as good, if not better. However, this comes with a price. There are too few handcrafted settlements to explore. It leaves the world's and galaxy feeling empty. This is supposed to be offset by the civilian outposts which are procedurally generated among planets you explore. In theory it's a cool idea, however it gets old fast. There are only so many types of outposts you can encounter, and they never have named NPC's. The quests they give will always be the "go kill this guy" type of quests with infinite variations. And the way they are randomly placed in the world and are devoid of meaningful characters reminds me of Minecraft villages. The worlds of Starfield don't feel immersive like Skyrim. There is a certain charm that's missing that comes with a handcrafted world. The way that the environment tells a story, the way the environment compels you to move to a point of interest, and the feeling of randomly stumbling onto some cool location, is missing in Starfield. Instead, points of interest (POI) are marked on you map and scanner, and you explore by just walking towards the POI on your compass. There is no stumbling onto some small scene that a dev lovingly put into a small corner of the map. Everything is procedurally generated outside of POIs. This is not the kind of exploration that's fun for me. The game suffers from a lack of weapon variety. For example for lasers, there's only 1 laser pistol, 3 rifles, and 1 heavy. It's really boring to have the same weapon model you had since the beginning of the game, with it just doing more damage. Skyrim had many different types of materials for weapons, and each had their own model. A greatsword had iron, steel, elven, orcish, and daedric variations. In Starfield I specced into lasers and pistols, and using one model for 28 levels was so disappointing. I'm disappointed because I thought Starfield would push Bethesda's boundaries, but it doesn't even match the level of Skyrim.

    Now, onto the good things.

The game is roleplaying friendly. I enjoyed the game the most when I leaned into roleplaying a starship captain. Because let's be honest, Bethesda aren't known for their in depth combat systems. It's combat is serviceable. Lean into it's strength as an RPG and you'll have a good time.

Building ships is great fun. The builder is a little clunky, but if you can get past it there's a lot of fun to be had. You can make ships of all shapes and sizes, and it just works. It's something you can sink your teeth into, and I appreciate that. A complaint I have is that you cannot buy a ship part, and store it to use later. You need to be physically present at the ship yard in order to use that part. This forces you to travel many times to many different shipyards, back and forth.

In conclusion, Starfield is a solid Bethesda game with many flaws, but still fun in the end. 7/10.

Yes, it's not as open as they lead you to believe, yes, the pronouns are stupid, but I personally didn't even notice it because they defaulted to the male character I made; hell, I didn't even realize I could change them at first.

What the game desperately needs is a vehicle you can use on a planet's surface to make you want to go explore the structures off in the distance. I sure hope there is some sort of buggy or land-speeder DLC. Spending 5 - 10 minutes just walking through a baren wasteland to get to one of the structures off in the distance is pretty boring.

The gunplay feels good, and the AI is leaps and bounds better than previous Bethesda titles.

I do feel like there are a bit too many restrictions placed on ship building and it becomes tedious swapping out and removing parts constantly just to get the errors to go away.

Being on PC, I am hoping most of my complaints will be solved with the help of mods, so it probably is getting an extra point as a result. I would say for the general public, a 6 is an accurate score and that's disappointing for a game that we all waited so long to play.

In conclusion, I know the devs put their heart and soul into this game and it does show under the complaints. It's just such a massive game that unless we wanted to wait another 1-2 years, this was probably the best we could have gotten. Bethesda can and hopefully will still fix the performance issues on PC and hopefully release some sort of free vehicle DLC. I think those two points would go a long way in making a lot of people enjoy this game a lot more. Buy the game but don’t do it under the belief that it’s the second coming or going to change your life.

Finally as always, this game will be endless with mods. Mods will find creativity that bethesda writers and game designers don't have.

The combat is generic and underwhelming, graphically it's not exactly ground breaking but will batter your hardware like it is and it has its fair share of game breaking bugs and crashing to the desktop so you need to save often. I see many giving this 10/10 which is ridiculous given the issues it has. Amazed how Bethesda seems to get a pass for putting out poorly optimised, unfinished and bug ridden games when every other publisher, rightly, gets dragged over the coals for it. Simply not good enough considering the time it spent in development. It's an OK game but the negatives far outweigh any positives. Expand

Bad performance no matter what HW you have, Bethesda doesn't fix this POS, it just says you have to update, cynics. It lacks HDR, raytracing and DLSS support, but these Bethesda mofos believe Starfield is "next generation.". Nice story bros, your ancient engine don't have to do with anything. This needs heavy patching/modding as always with Bethesda.

Disclaimer: I've wrote 170 game reviews on here for fun, being as honest as I can be. I think I've scored two games 10 and two games 0 in that time. So when I give Starfield this score and review, it is not 'review bombing' - it's embarrassing to see media outlets time and time again dismiss user generated reviews because they're generally actually more reliable than their scores.

    On with the review...

I was excited for Starfield. Not to the extent most were - I didn't expect Game of the Century - but I expected a really fun experience, Skyrim in space as people say.

I even bought the special edition headset and controller because they're incredible. I have zero regrets doing so either.

So yes, it's disappointing to say that Starfield is... mediocre. In many ways it is actually Skyrim in space, and if that was the aim they technically achieved it. But it's done with no heart, soul or innovation. It's a relic, a game from ten years ago, clumsily dressed up and disguised as a modern one. But it's like plastering over a wall that's falling apart; the cracks quickly begin to show. And boy does Starfield have cracks.

NPCs look and act like robots. They don't feel part of the world. Even the voiced primary cast have a vague empty feel to them. The cities suffer from uninspired design - either painfully bland or cookie cutter. They get a bit better than the first one you'll bump into, which isn't hard as THAT one almost feels like a practical joke in how generic and beige it feels, but it never gets to the territory of 'good'. Indeed, The Outer Worlds - a game this borrows heavily from and is inferior to in look, story and character - smashes Starfield apart in this respect.

Yes, the game is 'big'. But 90% of it is lifeless. Literally. Barren planets acting as resource deposits. Again, The Outer Worlds - smaller, more focussed and hand crafted - is leagues beyond what Starfield offers in terms of curated content, because it's a more even experience throughout.

The writing and cast... no, actually, I won't criticise the voice actors too much. It's done well for their part. But the writing... it's Maguffin 101, you largely know what is going to happen throughout inside 15 minutes and there's very little turn of pace or direction. And to again compare to The Outer Worlds, nearly everything is so serious - yes, it occasionally 'lightens up', but it feels like a side-mission of levity to the main mission of deadly serious, boringly delivered lines. Without Skyrim's 'one voice actor voices like 200 people' novelty, this really, really starts to grate.

Combat is, for the most part, good. Gunplay - a concern of mine ahead of launch - is surprisingly very decent. The levelling system, however, isn't. It's... not pointless as such, as the perks work, but it's all delivered at snail's pace and in terms of combat perks can mostly just be straight up nearly ignored.

The UI is classic Bethesda - terrible. But I could have lived with that personally as it's par for the course. The lack of mapping, however, isn't. It's an almost gamebreaking design fault, absolutely shocking and I can't for the life of me understand why they went in this direction. It's supposed to be a sprawling open world RPG - how can you NOT give the player mapping?

Speaking of RPG, this comes to the crux of my issues with Starfield. It's decidedly an average looter-shooter first, and an RPG second. Fresh off the back of Baldur's Gate III and Sea of Stars, Starfield REALLY feels limited in its role-playing aspects.

Is it a 'bad' game? No. There's a lot of fun to be had, it does a lot right. But it's a disappointing one overall. From the makers of Skyrim and Fallout, over a decade after the latters release and with the company surely learning from the mistakes of Fallout 76, I simply expected a lot better. This is going to be a game that review sites will cringe when looking back on the 9s and 10s it's been rewarded out of sheer hype, because it's quite honestly not even close to that score. It's a 4/10 'Bethesda' game for me, but a 6/10 'actual game' - I expected so much more and got, what the kids call, a 'mid' experience. To this day, I can pick up and play Skyrim for a few hours and have a great time; whereas I pick up and play Starfield and I'm looking for reasons to carry on after 15 minutes. Therein is the difference.

There are the same bugs as always, the same stiff faces and animations as always, even the idle lines of NPC's when you walk past are the same like in Skyrim and Oblivion or Morrowind. At some point I was even expecting one of the guards in New Atlantis to complain about his missing sweet-roll or tell me that he used to be an explorer as well...

Another negative point is the "your journey" factor. Elder Scrolls or Fallout games have this sense of moving forward, this journey your characters takes. Even if you travelled back and forth between two locations it still seemed meaningful, still had a purpose. In Starfield there are loading screens...
Whatever you do, there is a loading screen. You can travel to the far end of settled systems and it still doesn't feel like you're on an epic journey cause there are just loading screens. Hell, there even is a loading screen to get straight to your cockpit if you can't be bothered to walk across your own ship.

I know that you don't have to use fast travel and just do it the "old fashioned way" but honestly, there are occasions where I don't even know that I will fast travel. Once you discovered a place then you will fast travel there. You have to go out of your way to travel to discovered places the "normal way".

The game is not all that bad or a lie like some make it out to be, but it is less than what I would normally expect from Bethesda and definitely not worth the £60, hence 6/10.

The space travel aspect in the game is merely a shallow feature that allows you to say, "Hey, you can travel in space," without much actual gameplay involved. Rather than accessing other planets through a physical menu, you access them through an interactive menu while onboard your ship.

During my early gameplay, I had a ship battle, but there haven't been any significant encounters since. However, it's possible that these mechanics become more prevalent later in the game. Overall, the game feels like Fallout 4 set in space, albeit without the VATS system. The gameplay, loot gathering, and usage of loot resemble Fallout 4, and it doesn't bring much novel to the table. Unfortunately, there are two major flaws that significantly detract from the game.

Firstly, the absence of land vehicles other than walking is incredibly frustrating. Sprinting depletes your oxygen rapidly, and traveling from point A to point B takes a frustratingly long time due to the vast expanses of empty space between them.

Secondly, unlike in Fallout, where you could spot distant landmarks and explore the areas in between, this game lacks that sense of discovery. Either the long-distance visuals don't appear until you're closer, or there genuinely isn't much of interest on each planet.

Despite boasting a staggering number of 1000 planets to explore, it fails to capture the same sense of exploration found in Fallout or Skyrim. The issue might stem from the arduousness of traveling around, especially from point A to point B.

On the positive side, the game mechanics are solid and offer a diverse range of activities. Crafting weapons, armor, ship upgrades, and mining minerals form an intricate system. However, it would have been more enjoyable if the developers had focused on improving the content of a smaller number of planets, rather than spreading themselves thin over 10000 planets.

Additionally, the game suffers from technical issues. HDR is glitchy, the lack of an FOV slider and brightness adjustment is noticeable, and the lighting is subpar for a next-gen game. The PC optimization is questionable, although it's worth noting that some players forget that DLSS is not available in this game, causing performance struggles for those with lower-end GPUs.

Overall, I would rate the game a 6/10. If they were to address some key issues by adding a land vehicle, fixing HDR, introducing an FOV slider, and implementing DLSS, the score could potentially reach a 7/10. To further improve, they should focus on creating more points of interest on fewer planets, as the current quantity feels gimmicky. With such changes, the game could potentially earn a 9/10 rating.

After Redfail I had hoped MS would have insisted on only releasing games when they're ready. Starfield may have benefited from more time or even a redesign. As it lacks many basic options on all versions including FOV. So mods are once again freely fixing the many issues (cyberpunk style).

The game world is like 970 empty procedurally generated planets and 20 decent ones and 10 good ones. Its like a poor mans mass effect merged with no man's sky though inferior to both. It tries so hard to be all these better games but fails to be any of them or even it's own thing. But I feel with a year of official hard work and free dlc and mods then it could become something better. It will never be Skyrim in space as it's not a seamlessly open world game. As said at it's core it's an elaborate loading screen sim but it's the best one ever made!

Starfield is just a mix of "meh", "good" things sprinkled in with some extremely bad design decisions, like the whole UI.

It's clear Bethesda do not evolve or improve at all, my hype for the next Elder Scrolls died with Starfield. Starfield also made it clear that Bethesda needs to take the creation engine 2 behind the barn and shoot it. Too many limitations and you will find the same bugs from previous titles in Starfield.

    Quick recap:
    Performance = Bad
    AI = Bad
    MainStory = Bad (booooring)
    Sidequests = 50/50 Ok/Bad
    Combat = Ok (but underwhelming)
    Sound = Ok (but underhwelming)
    Music = Good
    Immersion = Bad

There is some ok to good parts in the game but overall very mediocre i would rate this 6/10. I wish modders wouldn't help Bethesda so they actually had to care about there own products in the future. Bethesda didn't even add FOV-slider or DLSS.

If you haven’t played Skyrim or Fallout in the last 10 years sure knock yourself out. But for the OG’s this one feels stale and at times totally half baked. Don’t get me started on the atrocious enemy AI. I feel like I can stand in a wide open space with no cover and just shoot until everyone’s dead. Putting aside the glaring wokeness of having preferred pronouns, the vast majority of humanity being multiracial for some reason, with white people, and especially white men, being extremely rare, and most positions of power being held by women, the game has other issues as well.

Such as the AI lacking the I, the character models being super ugly, reminding of Oblivion, the game being a chain of loading screens as the universe is not actually open, it's just a huge amount of cells, each with their own loading screen.

But above all, the game is just...BORING! It's not Skyrim in space, it's Fallout 4 in space, except that unlike Fallout 4, it doesn't even have a popular franchise to stand on.

Wokeness is always ignored by the players if the game is good. Hell, Baldur's Gate 3 is pretty woke and no one cares because the game is so damn good. But Starfield is not a good game, it's a mediocre game at best, so of course the wokeness sticks out like a sore thumb.

It's...a game. It's nothing memorable nor interesting, it's a soulless corporate product made to squeeze money out of the sheep.
And if anyone thinks it's a contender for the GOTY award, then they're just pathologically delusional.

The game could have been better and I have faith that the modders will make the game better. But Bethesda should consider that it's time for them to change their game engine and make games that are within their capabilities.

Alas, Starfield has proven to be beyond the company's capabilities. Many of the promises made by management turned out to be outright lies. I consider myself deceived, but I respect the good workers at Bethesda. Alas, they are run by incompetent people who have lost touch with the players and no longer understand what people like.

I wish Bethesda to change their management and not repeat Starfield's mistakes. Don't listen to those who praise this game. It's a failure. You will most likely regret the money you spent.

For me this is a game like Mass Effect, but without the great story, storytelling, cities, good combat and the amazing characters. I just expected much more from a project of this size and scope. It's been in development for 7 years by a developer that has all the budget, tools and manpower they need... . It's like they know that the modding community will add all the extra's and fix their game.

    My feedback:
*Very good and sharp visuals for the most part, but some stuff just looks weird.

    * You get thrown into this game with little to no explanation. Good luck figuring it all out!

    * Building your own ship is really cool, but you don't use it for what it's intended to be. So it's a cool and fun gimmick.

    * Better get used to the bugs and glitches, it will happen often.

    * The weapons etc are nice, but the combat is dull and boring.

    * The enemy and team NPC AI are really bad. They are just plain stupid.

    * Plenty of NPC dialogue, but the characters look at you like a plastic zombie with little to no expression. The dialogue is not really engaging too.

    * Inventory space and management is just a joke. Do the devs actually play their game? How many huge money making RPG's does Bethesda have to make to get this right?

    * Looting 1001 carrots, apples, phials, ducktape, screwdrivers etc to sell at an NPC for credits is really not oké anymore. It just sucks. It's like Bethesda is stuck in the past. Same note: do they actually play the game and go "wow this is fantastic, we should keep this?"

    * NPC vendors don't have enough credits for all the crap that you want to sell.

    * No mini map! It can take you a looooong time to figure out where the vendors are.

    * Space combat is not really exciting. The same for the exploring.

    * Wanna explore the universe or planets with your ship? Nope! It's just press a button and teleport! 1000 'planets' of pretty much nothing.

    * Most of the main NPC characters are just dull. If feel no connection with them what so ever. The only one I kinda like is Sam Coe. he NPC characters are a bit too chatty. For some reason, they all what too talk to you for some reason... . Endlessly talking about their private life, loved ones, lost husband, daugther... . It's a nice attempt for creating a bond with the characters, but does anyone really care about conversations like that?

    * Do I regret my 100$ purchase? I should've probably just bought the standard version. Or try it out first on xbox game pass. It's a oke fill the gap game. But it's really not what I thought it would or could be.

Let's just hope that the Elders scrolls 6 will be much better. Just plzzzzz stop doing the same stuff over and over again!!!

I’m 10 hours in. I’ve done multiple story mission and 2 open world quests.

Let me start with what I like.

Graphics looks pretty darn good, by and large. There’s some weird anomalies like the wide eyed stare, and there are visual glitches. Some planets look a bit weak but those total 5% of what I’ve seen. The other 95% looks great - textures and models of all the gear, the human built environments, all beautiful.

Voice acting is usually ok. There’s a lot of cartoony over the top voices that sound like sarcasm. Music is beautiful. It all loads pretty fast on my Series S, thank goodness because of the many loading screens. I don’t think I’m out of the first act of the main story but I’m following along, enough - it’s fine!

Already from my positives though you can see it’s not blown me away really.

    The bad:

The games mechanics are confusing, it is taking me forever to understand how I store, trade, keep, upgrade, etc all the gear. Hard to understand menu navigation when traveling, hard to understand how to survey planets (I spent 2 hours on my first planet going in circles until I regretfully looked up help online. There are annoying enemy bugs where they clip through walls; they get me but I can’t get them. They blend into the environment too much; the areas colors are usually just 2-3 main similar colors, and muted and muddy. Many times I can’t see the enemy because they wear those same colors plus all the smoke hides everyone.

I hate getting around. We are given an entire universe, but no great way to traverse it. Menu systems for ship travel are complex, confusing, and convoluted. Opening up a menu, selecting a planet, traveling, getting to the planet, but not actually landing on it, opening the menu, again, selecting an area on the planet, traveling again, watching the cut scene of the ship landing… terrible. Sometimes the planet needs to scan you for contraband, other times, not. Sometimes you can leave directly from being docked, other times you have to undock yourself. When you’re on the planet, you can’t run for long without running out of oxygen, that can run out even faster if you’re over encumbered, and when you’re over encumbered, you can’t fast travel. There are no vehicles. And you are running around these empty planets with nothing really interesting to do or look at as you make your way to the one area to get an artifact, or special ability or resource/trait. You can fast travel back to your ship… but only if you aren’t encumbered.

Characters talk over each other all the time. The gunplay has been a struggle. Aiming either feels like I am pulling the cursor through syrup or it has a booster engine and shoots my crosshair across the screen if I barely touch it. I’ve tried so many aim sensitivity settings but I think I am making small improvements only because I am learning to work within these confines. I have yet to find much ammo for one of the guns I really want to use.

Speaking of guns - what the actual EFF is with the lack of automatic ammo pick up? To get ammo for your gun, you have to pick up a gun that uses the same ammo. The ammo will automatically show up on your HUD but now you have to do something with the gun. With such limited inventory, I am dropping the guns all the time, and it really slows down the momentum of the game. . After spending 15 minutes walking in a slow straight line across a boring empty planet, when I finally find enemies to shoot, I don’t want to spend most of that time opening my menu to drop guns. Even a game considered one of the most realistic, RDR2, allows you to just walk near an enemy and the ammo is automatically picked up.

There is some good, but at this point there isn’t enough good to make me want to leave the main story again. At the moment, it’s entertaining enough that I will continue the main story for now, but I have a lot of other games I want to get to and star field has felt more like it’s stealing my time more than me enjoying my time with it.

It was a number of different things that made me give this game a negative review instead of a positive one. I was stockholm syndromed into thinking I loved the game and I did have a lot of fun when playing but then I just hit a wall that made me look at the game differently.

Exploration felt quite boring to me. I found the procedural generation not great and after 'exploring' multiple planets I just got sick of going in the same buildings, killing the same enemies and getting almost the same type of loot items again and again. I even got some of the same caves and bases with exactly the same terminal logs and environmental storytelling on multiple different planets.

I pretty much gave up on surveying after my second time since I found it mind numbingly boring having to run the distances in between the POIs and everything that needed scanning. It doesn't help that a lot of the landscape started to feel the same no matter what planet it was I landed on.

At first I really enjoyed the quests but as I did more and more and actually thought about the previous ones I realized that a massive number of the quests are quite simplistic and are basically just fetch quests or going somewhere to kill/persuade someone.

Can't really speak much for actual choices in the game. From what I saw the world doesn't really respond to your actions much and your actions provide little impact with the actual outcomes of quests. For me the choices in Starfield feel like the choices in Fallout 4. They are there to give you the illusion of choice but in most cases you are still going to progress to the same outcome regardless of what you choose. Starfield does do this better though and its not so obvious as it was in a game like FO4, I think having a voiceless protagonist is a big reason why it's hidden better.

As well as these things the game doesn't have much character for me. No edge or anything like you would get in the Elder Scrolls or Skyrim. It just feels incredibly vanilla and like Bethesda didn't want to take any risks or rock the boat. Even FO4 was better for me in this regard since it had the character of the Fallout universe/lore to back up the bad parts of that game.

I grew up playing RPGs and it basically didn't feel like an RPG for me but a looter shooter with RPG mechanics. My short summary of the game would be that Starfield is a slightly better version of a Ubisoft game.

It could have been a lot better by being smaller. I think that if Bethesda did a solar system or two with no more than 20 planets max and they were entirely handcrafted Starfield would be 10/10. I wouldn't even care about exploring whole planets. I would rather have a skyrimish size map per planet of handcrafted content than hundreds of the same repetitive tiles across hundreds of planets.

I wouldn't say don't get the game but IMO its certainly not worth the full price, let alone the price I paid for the premium edition. Wait for at least 6 months or a year and pick it up when its on sale and the modding scene for the game is more developed. Modding like in all BSG games will be top notch and likely produce stuff that is even better than the base game

Main story is hot garbage (i was on 8/10 until i started getting in to that whole multiverse stuff), The Red Mile is the MOST DISSAPOINTING content in the entire game.

Bethesda... Old engine, old tricks with lazyness drizzled on top. You take your modding community for granted..

It feels outdated all they way, the mechanics are the same from every other game from bethesda, they have not changed anything in 15 years, the IA its the most basic, dialogues and storyline are vague and simple, nothing interesting. There is no reason to explore planets since they dont really exist in the game, they are procedural generated portions of map that repeat assests over and over, its irrelevant what planet you visit, you can explore all the assets in a single planet just generating new portions of map all over it. It does not feel like im travelling through galaxies and systems at all. Loading screens, eventho they are 2 seconds, are annoying and breaks any inmersion the game could generate into the player, the game is not a big galaxy or map to explore like previous games, but small portions of map you have to load through to get to your destination, way too many loading screens and teleports to everywhere, there is no journey to a new location where you encounter random things on the way and end up doing something else. In general an OK game, I wish bethesda would be more ambitious in their games, this is not the most ambitious game from Bethesda. Just the continuation of what they have already done for the last 15 years or more, but now with space aestethics. Expand

They spent too much time and effort on the wrong things, I don't want to collect 10000s of small objects like wooden toys, I want to sit in my spaceship and travel SEAMLESSLY between planets and systems. This game is a big missed opportunity with a really barebones version of space.

Well well well, let me guess, you came to read reviews of Starfield, You've come to the right place traveller. I've been playing this game for a while, I'm a fan of Bethesda titles (The good ones), and I'm here to give you the goods.

    Let's begin:

    Negatives:
    - This game makes you hate Fast Travel, The procedural generation comes with limitations, there are no real-time procedural elements like lesser games such as No Man's Sky.

    - The performance is all over the place, sometimes it's 60fps, sometimes it's 24fps(No joke), and sometimes it's 45fps, it depends on how much is being rendered and what elements bottleneck your CPU and GPU.

    I'm running a PC with:
    AMD RYZEN 5 3600 6c 12t
    32GB DDR4 RAM @ 3200mhz
    MSI NVIDIA RTX 3060 12G
    Muskin Vortex SSD 7GB read/ 5GB write

and at 1080p it cannot maintain a Constant 60fps just like Fort Solis, I called it.

    - This game lacks character introductions, it's all a massive character dump or nothing, let's take Sarah for example, if I were to think about who she is, I wouldn't be able to tell you. The characters and storylines are just pushed onto you. The game says "OK stop what you're doing, get on the ship and go here".

    - Most planets are desolate and lack a certain type of detail compared to No Man's Sky.

    - There is a lack of features, including graphical settings, an explanation of those settings, No map for civilizations, no Map integrated into gameplay, no FOV slider, and No Display settings, it is this convoluted mess of menus and things that are uneasy or completely useless to achieve the thing that you want.

e.g fast Travel, you will have to delve into two menus and endure 2 loading screens.

    - All of this takes too long for FAST TRAVEL, who designed this?!

    - You can travel to and from planets but there are no mechanics that make that easy, it will take you hours, if not days.
No Man's Sky, an Indi-developed game has more mechanics and fun ship features than this game. The "Grav Drive" in this game is a glorified loading screen.

    - This game is overly expensive considering the quality.

    - The animations and gameplay are Janky for 2023 standards.

    - There are a bit of woke touches in here(I'm not bothered about that too much, I just care about the game.)

    - You can't see your character when choosing Dialogue, I don't care if it's a "Bethesda" title, make your game have a good presentation like I don't know... Baldurs Gate 3.

    - The UI is boring, the UI is sh*t to use, and yes this includes the start screen. People were complaining about this and they have every right to. Of course, a Start screen doesn't speak for the game, but it can raise red flags in consumer confidence about a product, that's just reality.

Don't give me the excuse of, "Oh but you're only going to see it for like 3 seconds", when a mechanic is focused on opening a menu every few minutes, the UI, all of it better look amazing.
I would do that in my game, Why shouldn't Bethesda, a AAA Studio, backed by the Trillion Dollar Company Microsoft?
Stop making excuses and expect better, otherwise, you are asking to be screwed.

    - When I saw the Start screen, I knew that something about Starfield was off, I wanted this game to be the pinnacle of Bethesda RPGs, but let me tell you this is no better than Fallout 4, play that game instead.
This is Fallout in Space just without any of the fun mechanics like Power Armour, Pip boys, Interesting characters and Story, all of it is just so bare minimum, with a hint of ...Something.

    - No vehicles, No planetary Flight.

    - Misuse of Invisible Walls
    - Maybe things weigh too much. Positives: - Nice lighting. - Nice Music. - Nice Gun Play. - New Game Plus - Nice excessive Detail to things. - Good Procedural animation and sometimes voice acting. It took 8 years to develop, we could have had 2 great Bethesda games if management wasn't like this. Now for what it's worth, I do see the passion and dedication, but that's nothing if there isn't substance. Bethesda has me Scared about TES VI. Just remember, instead of trying to make a big game, try and make a Quality game. This is a 6/10 game, and my initial prediction was more forgiving. This game is slightly entertaining and that's it, There are good moments but god you have to grind. *A Message to Phil Spencer, You are wrong. Making great games would do wonders XBOX, and future titles to come, Starfield has shown me that Bethesda is nowhere near ready to Deal with TES VI. DO NOT buy this game, Please listen to me, Let me save you once more. Wait until Bethesda releases all DLC and when modders have fixed the rest of the game, then Buy it. So when they do their "GOTY Edition", get it for about $50 or less. Right now, Don't even look at this game, I'm not going to until it's oversaturated with fun content, and the game is more tolerable. That's my review, I'm gonna start playing my Second Playthrough of BG3 now...

Unfortunately the Starfield we got is underwhelming and not what was promised by Bethesda.

It runs like crap, even on high end hardware and the copy / paste of game elements across planets means it gets boring very fast. It's not worth the $120 AUD they're asking for the base version, let alone the $170 AUD they're asking for the premium edition. Give them 12 - 18 months to fix

but the game falls flat and feels like another generic bethesda game but in space
its world felt like they pushed a super realistc take on the space world which felt weak especialy towards something like the elder scrolls and fallout which took a more fantasy approach to its world

the game lacked something like the star wars world setting
more space or alien like people you can talk or even be
it feels too realistc compard to other games they made

while combat is improved i felt the AI has not been improved
ai still is braindead and easy to cheese and now you are able to kill enemies 10-15 lvl above what you are

traveling the planets also feels mid
the invisable wall drama only made it worse as lead devs from bethesda promised it diffrently then what we got

the ship combat feels weak also and something you will get annoyed by
the story felt weak as well with you being forced to play 12 hours of slop boring stuff to even get to the "good stuff"

lets not begin about the loading screens and how that is more of the game then a real game

this release was something many say is goty or game of the century which its not
and rpg of the year it lost by a mile away against bg3

    pro
    -combat is improved from fo4
-it looks at times pretty good

    cons
    -30 fps is noticable
    -weak story
    -ship combat annoying

In reality this game is average it does some stuff right, does some stuff horribly and the rest is mediocre filler content. If you really want to know whats good/bad from someone who is indifferent, here it is.

    The Good:
Combat is cool/ varied weapons and boosting through shooting is fun
Different equipment/stats makes for some cool builds
Alot of missions/side mission to sink your time in
    Art style is cool
Ship building is fun if you can digest the ui

    The bad:
Horrible UI all over the game
You spend about 30% of your gameplay time in menus (maybe 50% if u engage with crafting/ outpost building mechanics)
Exploration is Instanced loading screen galore (and a lot of menus)
    Stupid encumbrance system
    Outdated graphics
    Bad Optimization

    The Average:
    Meh main story
Many missions are either fetch quests or go kill someone
Choices are either meaningless or has no real effect on story progress
AI is just A without the I
less bugs than Bethesda's history but still there

Got it on game pass, I would only buy the game with 50% or less discount, Bethesda has over hyped the game. Graphics are great, gameplay feels outdated like playing fallout 4. The world's exploration most of the time feels empty. Combat and weapons are okay. Rpg elements are okay. Story is not so okay. By far the worst is Official DLSS support missing due to stupid AMD exclusivity.

This game feels stuck in the 2010s. I enjoy a lot of parts of this game but they are outweighed by frustrating things. I was hoping for Skyrim in space, because I love Skyrim. But it is more of a Fallout in space and I do not like fallout at all. The gunplay does not feel great at all to me. Freedom to explore is good though. Weird choices with the menu too.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
