This game was clearly rushed out for the holiday season, they had to hot-fix the only patch they've released and are now maintaining radio silence. Unacceptable, but hey they made their money so who cares! Broken animations, broken controls, broken quests, broken character models, everything you want in an epic RPG!

I am going back and playing through Dragon age 2 and plan to go through Inquisition one more time after that. Expand

It was nowChased by things with long spidery legs and multiple eyes I stumble out of the fade right into the arms of Cassandra. Cassandra is a pretty short haired lassie with a French accent that I saw interrogating the beardless dwarf Varric in Dragon Age 2. I find myself her prisoner, but not for long because in a blink of the eye I am on my way back towards the rift I dropped out from. It was now a lot bigger as it is expanding and has become a huge hole in the sky where dangerous things spill out off.

I am inflicted by a magic that affects rifts and Cassandra figures that I might try the magic on that big one in the sky. So she forces me up some mountain paths at sword point, where we fight demons that pop out of smaller rifts, pick up some companions and soldiers on the way to finally confront a big dude of a demon emerging from the big rift. A hefty battle occurs which I am bound to win, for this is just the introduction to the game. Or better: the preliminary introduction.

When I wake I find myself in Haven and then and there the story starts for real. Bummer! The big hole isn't closed that easily, instead it is merely stabilized. Now it is up to me to figure out how to close it. And that is the hero quest. For the first part of the game that is. For even this is just the introduction.

An odd hundred hours of gameplay later I think I can safely give an evaluation of the game.
The game can be done in two ways. You either take the short route, which blows you through the main storyline in under thirty hours, or you take that long route, by exploring the expansive world of Ferelden.

For this you are provided with cool looking war table where you, together with three advisers, plan the campaign of the Inquisition, an impromptu organization that Cassandra calls into being and you become the leader off. First unofficially, later officially. The game throws you a castle somewhat further into the story.

The first area, the hinterlands, is expansive and kept me busy for quite some time, but it turned out there are at least nine more, varying from small to large, but non as huge as the first one. Each has a certain uniqueness to it. There is a blistering desert, a dark foreboding swamp, a rocky stormy coast(called aptly: the storm coast) and a snowy landscape.. It isn’t all unique, there are overlaps and sometimes certain things get repeated, but it nevertheless immersed me in a world and gave me lots to do: even just closing the smaller rifts is a massive undertaking. There are also attempts at variance, by introducing mini games like creating constellations by drawing lines between stars, which gives you access to special equipment.

There are also the typical fedex games, where you have to collect things ad nauseum to the point that you start to scream in frustration because sometimes there seems to be no end to them, or the things are so hard to find or even worse: to get at, yes: to get at, because they are on places that are very difficult to reach.

The music and sounds are very good and support the storyline and add to the mood.

In all I found it a well done immersive game world.

    But…

DA III has probably the most unimaginative story of the three DA games. It is basically DA I retold. There is a big evil that threatens the world, you have some kind of unique quality that allows you to deal with said evil and it is up to you to create an alliance out of the forces that are more concerned with their own selfish goals than with the obvious threat to the world.

So it comes down to the way the story is being told: the narrative. And this is even worse. DA III has a flood of characters. So many that they bloat the narrative. Next to nine companions you also have three advisers with all of them having their own storyline and background. And because DA III also wants to wrap up some loose ends characters of the other games make an appearance as well: Flemeth, Morrigan and the hero from DA 2. And to compound the bloated narrative even more, they threw in a plethora of evil adversaries, allies and sideshows. Everything provided with a background story that remains skin-deep and never makes you care.

But worst of all is the big evil adversary himself: Corypheus. Where a game should provide us with an evil that dominates the game and thwarts the hero’s plans every step of the way, we get a run of the mill baddie who lacks in background, personality and panache. His appearance might have been an attempt to make him terrifying, but in all scenes my twiggy elf remained unfazed by this wanna-be god. He isn’t scary, menacing or even impressive.

All in all this is a game that will provide you with a lot of entertainment if you like a massive world with lots to do and see, but as a story it is unremarkable and will have no lasting impression due to the bland story, bloated narrative and unremarkable adversary.

Perhaps a wise lesson can be learned: less is more.

The good of this game is the immersively beautiful world to explore. As a fan of The Elder Scrolls I love it very much. On the other hand it retains the spirit of Dragon Age: 5-dimensional story line where different choices bring different timelines, well-written characters, and of course, the continued saga of our heroes from the previous 2 installments.

Yes it's different, I love it. It combines the open world of TES and the good tradition of Bioware RPG together. Hope that they will improve the user interface to make it more intuitive for everyone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Given the negative player response to both Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3, BioWare needed a game to answer its critics and prove that they are still the best in the business when it comes to RPGs. I will not criticize Mass Effect 3 as it is one of my favorite games despite the unsatisfying ending, but I will gladly criticize Dragon Age 2 which I felt was a dreadfully poor game and a terrible follow up to Dragon Age: Origins. BioWare needs Inquisition to breathe life back into the series.

So how did BioWare do in the latest edition to the franchise? One of the chief complaints to DA2 was the use of recycles maps. There can be no such complaints in this area with Inquisition, the game is huge! Each area is feels unique and has a certain history behind it. While the large environments are fantastic to explore there is a downside to it which I will detail later. The soundtrack to game is also excellent.

Another great aspect of Inquisition is the characters. BioWare has a talent of creating interesting and memorable characters and Inquisition didn't disappoint. There are nine characters to join the party as well as having three advisors with whom you can chat and learn about. Varric returns together with Cassandra and I think they are my two favorite characters. All characters were well written and had interesting back stories. The voice acting is once again incredible.

Combat has improved from the over the top flashy mess that was DA2. The talent trees were fantastic and the battles could be challenging. I found that I often had to abandon an area which I could not defeat the enemies given my low level/poor equipment. I must give huge kudos to BioWare for the battles with the Dragons in the game! Each dragon was amazing and it was a sight to behold first seeing them in flight. The dragon in the Hinterlands and the one on the Storm Coast were in particular breathtaking!

The party camp system has changed again. Inquisition characters have their own special place within the Skyhold fortress and which you can approach them and engage them in dialogue. Skyhold itself is huge and impressive! I do think that I have yet discovered all there is to it and it is tremendous fun exploring it. It has taken me a while to figure out how to find the characters given its size and many pathways.

Given the lack of customization options in DA2 BioWare had to make changes in Inquisition. This time the player is offered a ton of customization options from weapons and armor and even changes to Skyhold itself! All of this allows the player to freedom to shape things to their own choice.

While there are plenty of positive points to Inquisition there are of course some negative aspects to the game which I think detracts it from being a truly outstanding game. Firstly the controls on PC are clumsy and can get a bit irritating. Yes it is possible to re-map the controls but it doesn’t complete solve the problems. The option of clicking an area in the distance and having your character move to there is gone. Also loot gathering is a bit of a chore again as the game requires you to be right up close to the loot to get it. Also characters failed to understand the importance of the Hold Position command. The tactical camera once again makes an appearance in the series but it was terribly done! I wanted to use the tactical camera to explore the surround but Inquisition purely uses it for combat purposed. Firstly it didn’t pull up high enough to get a decent view of the surrounds and secondly the controls made it very difficult to navigate with. Apart from the battles with the various dragons I ended up not using the tactical camera. While the game has these vast and beautiful areas to explore I felt that this ended up being a distraction from the main story. The game does not force you to do things in a hurry (for which I am grateful) but while spending hours if not days in the vast maps I think the main story kind of got forgotten in the background. Much of the exploring takes place in unpopulated areas which makes the world seem a bit empty. The main storyline was ok but I think it still doesn’t compare to that of the Witcher 2.

On the whole I think that Inquisition is a solid game. There are definitely areas for improvement but I think this game does prove that BioWare is listening to their fans. There are many wonderful qualities in the game and it is easy to spend over 60+ hours playing. It is definitely value for money! I do not think however that the game itself will be enough to convince those players who felt burnt after DA2 and ME3 that BioWare can produce the best games.

Uninteresting story, boring buttonmash combat, clunky controls, "plastic" world without any interactivity... This is basically a 1981 game with modern graphics and sound.
NPCs are blinking statues with one line dialogues, quests are boring and pointless, all feels fake and there is no way you can get immersed in the game's world, or even suspend your disbelief for a couple seconds.

So user reviews on Metacritics have become my #1 quality control system. It has been rather reliable (not always) but never left me with any need to send out my own review.

However, in Dragon Age Inquisition, I see that "player scoring" failed. So I thank you for reading more...

I played this game one year after release. And I almost canceled my purchase after reading the player reviews. I eventually tried the game - and I will never regret it!

My game pleasure started a bit low; after a great moment customizing my character with DA very comprehensive tools, i had a bit of low pleasure experiencing the first story contents, character progression and first environments.

The skills I could acquire while leveling didn't begin as a strong incentive; the story felt a bit "quick"; the first environments were too bright and a bit too common.

The game doesn't give you much direction to follow, but this was a great advantage to me, considering the linear paths DA2 sent us into, I liked more freedom.

At that time, the score I would have given the game would have been 6 or 7.

But the flaws of the game were not any of the ones I read in other reviews: no drastic bug, no problem with dialogue contents or frequency, no problem with the frequency or variety of side missions; no problem wit the open world and no problem left clicking and aiming foes (but I have to say that I am an Archer, and also, that this behaviour might have been patched).

Combat was simple, but then slowly grew to become super fun. 3 fours into the game it was still a bit too simple. But it improves surprisingly. 20 hours into the game it became even excellent; and the more I gained experience, the more dire the challenges, the more fun I was having.

This applies to all other parts of the game and is the most exceptional thing about it; the more you play, the more fun, gameplay and quality you experience. And all this in its gameplay, and not even from its story progression

This is the opposite of what I had in plenty of other games, be they roleplaying games or strategy games. In roleplaying games, it is usually the story progression that kept me in and having fun, not the gameplay in itself; gameplay-wise, the game often reaches a point where you are strong and the events are just repetitive and detrimental to the gameplay.

I saw a player compares Inquisition to Kingdom of Amalur; I strongly disagree. Amalur sure has a large open world and repetitive action combat; repetitve killings of small creatures and small side quests you do not feel attached to; Inquisition actually starts a bit like that, but after a few hours you discover where the game shines.

The small missions you encounter while exploring the open world are not meant to make you feel strongly attached to them. But they are a great part of your character political and heroic progression. Your hero is a starting leader and you live that experience freely and entirely.

I have encountered dialogue options that left me thinking and pondering my choices for MINUTES; three minutes for some, and a full 15 minutes for one.

The only game that previously left me pondering a dialogue option for three minutes was The Witcher (shall I allow the crowd to kill that witch that is innocent of that crime, but has committed others? is she actually innocent?), or maybe Planescape Torment once.

In Inquisition, the game already gave me plenty of meaningful choices. These options, however, are mostly political. This is the first roleplaying game I encounter that focuses many of its decisions on political choices, and it feels great, compelling, challenging and very original.

I could go on and speak of some outstanding environments you encounter maybe in you 6th to 10th hour of game time, or of how combat feels more and more enticing as you play more. I could speak of how it "feels real" when you upgrade your small camp into something more impressive.

I have around 16 hours of game time and I can see how I could sink 200 hours into it, without feeling it as repetitive as, say, even a great RPG such as Lords of Xulima, or anopen-world such as Skyrim.

I believe the game biggest flow is how uneven it can be. It starts out actually so weak, with its least original environment. There are other places like the swamps that are much more interesting to explore.

I started with a score of 7 in this game; I am now at 9.
It is possible that it will grow to 10, or will fall to 8 before it ends.

In my experience, it is just one of the greatest RPGs I have ever played. DAI is better than Skyrim, DAO or DA2 in its decisions; and worse than Skyrim in visual quality. But overall I enjoy DAI even more and already expect a longer time with it.

    PROS:
    1. Best looking RPG this side of Witcher 2. And I don’t over exaggerate. The look of DA:I is absolutely stunning. Beautiful landscapes, pretty good looking characters if only to highlight slightly stiff facial animation. Still, if only for the Fallow Mire location, which the artists have absolutely bloody nailed with the spooky atmosphere, undead, rain and lighting, crooked trees, lonely castle and a massive moon in the background. Game looks very pretty indeed, I can’t state this enough.
    2. Strategic Map quests. Some get executed immediately, some take time and you have to allocate your advisors to perform it. That’s interesting, makes you care how you allocate your resources. This can lead to an new open area in a locale which you can revisit or a small quest.

    CONS:
    1. Inventory menu is only just better than Skyrim and Fallout - a scroll down list to accommodate for the armless console players. HA! But serious, it feels rather annoying. Your characters to appear on the side and are updated with the new look but the available and the items already being worn are all dumped in the same list.
    2. The story is quite irrelevant. By that I mean I have always felt quite safe, there is very little danger and loss in the sense of making the right decision. There is rarely a moment when you find yourself biting your nails to trying to salvage a situation selecting from bad and worse options. Everything is only gained and built up, troops join and life is going all peachy but I can’t emotionally invest enough to care. Sadly this makes it rather boring.
    3. The characters are not very interesting, although there is a great potential and they do appear diverse there’s hardly an emotional connection to any of them. Group banter is quite fun though.
    4. Combat, although a massive improvement from DA2 is still nowhere as good as Origins. Tactical camera feels very consoles oriented, limited, annoying and evidently rarely used by the community, which makes it pretty much useless. This is a big letdown by the devs.
    5. No options of setting up attack chain behavior like in Origins (ie if Boss is Weak Then do this) for your party. That was an absolutely fun feature to play with. And sadly, as mentioned above, Tactical mode is more annoying that is of any real use and absolutely cannot replace any Origins combat mechanics.
    6. NPCs spawn sometimes right before you, this kinda kills the atmosphere and immersion. AI sometimes is pretty dumb and just sit there watching you kill their buddies and only respond if you attack them.
    7. Loot is mostly not guarded and too plentiful I found. No one cares that you take anything and there is very little sense of value to items in general. Enemy NPCs may or may not hang around in the area but overall it feels more of a chore to pick up stuff rather than a treasure hunt. On my second character play though I spent as little as possible on loot which is a pretty sad thing to say for an RPG. This might be my own preference but I would like to see a different balance to the weapons and armor. I didn’t have any attachment to any items really since you can bet that in no less than 5 minutes you can get a better one so why bother attaching arms and leggings or improving the weapon with hits etc. It’s not that you don’t get the “Rare” items it’s that there is very little purpose in spending time looking after your inventory and lovingly upgrading your stuff since after spending time you may get a similar specced item in a few minutes, rare stuff included.
    8. Stuff to do, quests and such. Lots! Sounds like it should be a good thing right. Well, it really should, but it’s not. It’s more of a grind in this case. Go over the same map over and over and collect 20 of these things and 20 of those. Effort/Reward in this case is nothing to be excited about. Strategic map quests, again, feel exciting at first but the rewards you get is another item which you sell for a few cents. Feels like there is very little value in doing those.

In conclusion – DA:I is not really a bad game if you look at it without the Origins baggage., which, sadly, a lot of players have. It’s just not a very good one. An absolutely awesome game like Origins sets the standard high, too high for DA:I unfortunately. It could have been a great game but it feels bloated with meaningless stuff, over saturated with quests and loot collection, dumbed down combat system and strangely for Bioware (again? DA2) un-immersive story. There is nothing really you can take at the end of the day and feel like an achievement. It’s not the items, it’s not the story, nor the characters, nor the decisions, it’s… really nothing. The only thing I could recommend this is to see the graphics which are pretty damn goo

You can craft to upgrade gear (yes, you have to collect resources and obtain recipes, which frankly got me curious about the game to begin with), you get a mount that you can upgrade with its own barding and plate gear, there's endless quests and the story lore is quite engrossing. I am completely surprised by this game. I expected more of the same console-games-applied-to-PCs as an afterthought.

Couple that with three other adventurers that you can mix and match as you discover new ones, who constantly add to the storyline with occasional dialogue with each other, and who help you as you quest, and well, this game is a delightful surprise for me. I'd highly recommend buying it. Best solo-player game I've played in ages.

First of all, I would advise not to pay attention to any review that gives this game a score lower than 5 or higher than 8-9. In my opinion, it was a decent game, but not a masterpiece.

    CONS
    - The tactical camera is not half as good as in the previous games. It does not provide a good perspective of the battlefield and gets stuck on terrain elements. When fighting indoors, it does not work as it should, as it doesn't allow you to have an aerial sight of the combat.
    - You can neither select your whole group, nor click on the place you wanted to go to. If you want to collect items or loot, you have to move close to them since you can't click on them and see your character move towards it to do it (I found this incredibly annoying).
    - Some passive skills make little or no sense since the benefits they provide are very circumstantial. Activated skills only have one upgrade (they generally had two in DA II).
    - Certain skill builds allow your party to become nearly invulnerable (I admit it requires careful planning, but it is something that I consider that should never happen). Plus, the enormous amount of healing potions provided during that main quests makes them barely challenging.
    - Tactics are so simplified that the margin for customization is almost nonexistent (I am glad I never use them).
    - Combat mechanics are totally different for your party and for the enemies. Enemy mages only cast runes and barriers. Enemy warriors only use bull rush or whirlwind. Enemy rogues only use stealth or full draw. To compensate this lack of skill variety, they are given a ridiculous amount of health points. Their AI apparently doesn't allow them to see beyond the room they are in.
    - Side quests (and most war table operations) have no impact on the epilogue (not even the most relevant ones). Many of them are based on collecting a large amount of scattered objects.
    - I also missed gifts for companions. Not indispensable, but it would have been interesting.
    - The "no healing spells" thing would have been great... if you couldn't quick travel anytime to get more free potions. Quick travel should have been limited to travelling between camps/settlements in order for that idea to work properly.

    PROS
    - The story is pretty good. More interesting and well written than most people would admit. Presents you with some hard/ambiguous choices.
    - Companions are well written and developed. They personalities are complex and appealing. They have a fair amount of dialogue.
    - The maps are beautiful and huge. Wherever you go, there is always something interesting there.
    - You need not visit all areas in order to complete the game. This means that some maps are entirely dedicated to secondary quests (some of them are hard to find).
    - Some side quests are quite interesting. Puzzles are also well done.
    - It has an epilogue with many different endings. Though it is not as good as Origin's one (which reflected many more choices), it is pretty decent.
    - You can see the effect of some of your actions. When you complete certain quests, the areas or the enemies present in them, change. Companions and advisors comment on your progress or decisions.
    - Dialogue is better than in DA II, both in quantity and quality. You are told when your companions like what you say, but there isn't an approval bar (something that I consider good).
    - There are skill combos. And the game doesn't tell you how to make them (I think this is good as well). Focus-powered skills are also interesting.
    - I liked the "click to search" idea. It is something new that makes harder to miss important quest-related items, while adding the feeling that you are truly looking for something.
    - The new potion-making/upgrading system is, in my opinion, the best of the series. The limited amount of potions is also a great idea.

I'll begin by stating that I have put over 100 hours into this game, and reserved my opinions on DA:I until completion. I have played through the entire "story" and completed every side quest I could find. I played as a 2h Dwarf Warrior and also have spent quite a few hours messing around on a Qunari Rogue and a Human Mage.

I ultimately found myself painfully wishing it would end within hours, but I chose to stick it out (since the majority of 10/10 reviewers are citing the bad reviews as people who "only played a few hours").

I decided to play this game with an open mind, I had neither high nor low expectations going in, I loved DA:O and struggled to enjoy DAII. I played the PC version using a 4770k / ASUS 290x, all settings maxed.

Visually with the settings maxed the environments are very nice, especially coastline scenery with waves crashing into the beach. I do agree with most reviews that it seems most objects and characters in the game are coated with "wax", giving a plastic effect on everything from characters to paintings on the walls.

The opening of the game made it seem like this would be a great game with an in depth story, but after being released in the Hinterlands I became quite confused and the boredom began to set in. After opening each new area in the war room, I was never certain which quest was even main quest related, I just cleared the entire area and that was enough to progress. The story line became utterly non-existent, it seems the story had an intro, a half way event (leading to skyhold) and the final events, packed with ~70 hours of filler in between. Every area felt the same, find the oculara shards, complete the astrariums, loot plants and ore, kill nonhostile and hostile creatures for crafting quests (that did seemingly nothing upon completion as far as the strength of my "army" and character development, which ultimately had zero bearing on anything). I literally only found one side quest in this game rewarding as it resulted in an upgraded sword for my character. Everything else only left me with a bit more experience, which leads to the point: This game is a mindless grind festival, every reviewer stating "Single Player MMORPG" hits the nail on the head, I felt like I was playing a dumbed down WoW alone. Also, the war table scout missions were mostly worthless, send somebody out anywhere from 14 minutes to 23 hours and receive an ultimately useless reward, again no noticeable bearing on the story. And the amount of Oblivion gates, excuse me I mean fade rifts that were all the exact same to close was mind numbing. I literally spoiled and covered 99% of this game in this paragraph.

Character Development: I was left supremely disappointed. The acting has almost zero appeal to this type of fantasy game. Never in my life have I had a problem with women in video games, I thought Morrigan was awesome in DA:O, but this game is just over the top. Nearly every character in a position of power was a woman, and their attitudes were typical of a rotten "empowered" liberal. I don't care that Sera "likes girls too", it just makes my head hurt. I understand wanting to cater to minorities and LGBT crowds, but this game is at a level of insanity IMO, of course people will rant and rave over this comment but it's true, this was clearly done for PR and sales. I'll leave the neo-political rant at that. Aside from that, development was very boring, one minute everybody hated me because I was a stupid dwarf guilty of murder, then I'm the Herald of Andraste and worshiped by all, nothing in between.

Customization: Nonexistent in this game. Stats are automatically increased based on the skills you pick, I found that for each character you just pick a tree, put a "point" in everything, after that mostly working to get every passive possible and working up the specialization tree. It had no effect on the difficulty, this game is 100% run into a pack of monsters, mash every spell that's recharged and keep swinging. I played on normal, did not set up any tactics for my allies, never told them what to do, and I believe I did not die once in battle.

Other: Within 10 minutes I realized this was a console port, I gave up on playing with K+M and switched to an xbox controller. Tactical camera as pointed out relentlessly is totally unusable, don't even bother with it. There is little diversity to equipment, no item sets, just armor and helm (with a few moddable additions in slots), I had zero interest in "finding" gear. No party tactics, no control over allies like DA:O and as promised. The game was jokingly easy and required ZERO thought to beat. This was NOT a game for PC gamers, that statement is an utter lie. It was designed for consoles, with console players in mind. This was NOT an RPG. It's also very buggy.

The good: My 3 year old nephew enjoyed jumping off of cliffs and dying. That's the only thing I've gained in my time with DA:I.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 1st: Im a huge fan of the series (all games + books, comics). 2nd: Sorry for my english. 3rd: almost 2 months after finishing this game, I just cant calm down... Biggest dissapointment for me in the year 2014 (thank god that It´s 2015 now) I was waiting for this game 3 years. What did I get? well: Lets make one thing clear, we have more questions from this game, less answers. pros: soundtrack, dorian, cass, bull, solas, cole, josephine, cullen. most memorable: "alexius alternate reality" mission, chant scene (dawn will come), the fade level, the exploration part of the game, ancient elven history reveal "about their fall", dragons! cons: TONS!!!
most dissapointing: repetitive, purpose of influence?, blackwall, vivienne, sera!, empty "not living" world, NPC just "there" doing "nothing", I think this game wasnt finished yet. where´s sandall (Iconic character from pervious 2 games)?!!!, no deep roads location/map?, no ogres?, no desire demons?, no abominations (with so many mages in this game)???, no sylvans?, genlocks?, emissaries??? shrieks?, genlock alpha?, qunari faction/enemies? bugs everywhere, not enough free slots for abilities in HUD,
the specs are TOTALLY bad (necromancy - redesigned spirit (only 3 active spells), rift mage - force mage mixed with primal)!, NO BLOOD MAGIC!!! (this is the biggest dissapointment for me too, ICONIC POWER FROM previous games),
more and more new gods?, again CORY? OMG, we know there were more ancient magisters, you just reused a villain from the last DLC from the 2nd game! come on!, the final fight was the easiest!,
not tactical combat, just repetive (barriers, slow, weaken,... fire everything! and again),
epilogue? approval for companions (no meter?) - my epilogue was a big mess - I was awaiting a different epilogue (another divine, dont know how the game done this)
WTF??? HOW CAN SOMEBODY GIVE THIS GAME A 8-9 points, come one people, BE REALLY HONEST!!!
Gaspard? In books he was great, here? Briala looks like some "mistress", I was waitng to see an assassin/agent like tallis? and Felassan? what happened to him? Imshael? fight him and kill him, or let him go and he kill "somebody" and you cant kill him later.
And the "reveal" about "the old lady" is for me the biggest shock! She is just one of the most important thing in this series and after credits they just twist the whole story more and more........ OMG!
the launch was too soon, at least another 6 months was required.
The 2nd game was Great, Origin was Perfect, but this.... just average.
Never again pre-ordering to have the game first. THE MULTIPLAYER IS A JOKE, really!!!!!!!!
I was feeling a hype from the mega trailers you realeased every week, but dont expected this. really.
just have finished the Witcher 2 and I can tell you BIO, thats a story and game (dark, bloody, mature, sexy and fantasy)!!!!! Now Im waiting for the 3rd game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game became the biggest disappointment of the year for me. And the problem not only in the game-play itself - tactic camera, no auto-attack (which, by the way, was very unnerving) all of mmo-like quests and so on. What pissed me off is absence of role-play itself in the RPG. It sound odd, but it's true. I got the feeling that I'm playing the game made up by some fun-fiction writer with no talent or so ever. The Inquisitor is a Mary Sue character that has a god-like powers, everyone worship him(her), he(she) can do anything and everything he(she) touches is turning to gold. There is no personal motivation to the main character - why would he (she) want to join the Inquisition? To save his(her) own skin? But the threat is very vague. The only option at the end is to save the world. The easiness with which he(she) becomes the leader of the Inquisition was very surprising for me. Just because of a green thing in the hand. And that is the only reason I could see. He(she) did nothing to get this position - absolutely. All that he(she) do most of the time - is collect herbs, kill animals and make stupid side-quests to find someones goat. And that thing with the Wardens - is Inquisitor became a ruler of Orlais that he (she) can just banish them from this Empire? WTF? Maybe we should name the main character not Inquisitor but The-All-Mighty-The-Ruler-Of-World?
There is no feeling of coming disaster, no atmosphere of coming evil. Why would we need to close those rifts if almost all of them are situated where is no people who would suffer from them? And the funniest moment is that there is no reaction of NPC that are near by when you fight someone. Most of the NPCs are not moving at all, even if you try to pass them by - you just stuck if you try to go through several NPC chatting. And the chatting, ohh... when I tried to listen what they say... well, let's say they talking like crazies.
Now let's see what Inquisitor we can play. We don't have an option to play any character but good. For example, when we make Cole's quest, we don't have an option to kill a Templar - because we are good, we can't be evil. No-no, we can sentence to death someone, while sitting on the THRONE, bot not when Cole wants to kill someone: "It's unthinkable!" - says Inquisitor. Where is the CHOICE I'm asking you, bioware? Where is the real choices? The only one I could remember - is at the ball, but I didn't even care who to chose.
The dialog wheel - is just one big fail. Want to romance character - why think? - jut push the answer with the heart - no problem. There is no wrong answer - everyone loooves you - Mary Sue it is. And sometimes I pushed the answer and my Inquisitor yelled like hysteric, which I couldn't expect from the answer I chose.
It seems that Bioware just want to show you picture. It's like Michael's Bay popcorn movie. You CAN watch it, but there is no soul in it.

RPG elements has been further dumbed down to please causal gamers and consoles even beyond Mass Effect 3 level (but at least in Mass Effect 3 you still had story, better fights and guiding).

DA3 takes more from Star Wars Online but not in a good way, the massive areas are beautiful but the majority of the quests fetch this and fetch that and this is even rooted into all the strange changes they have dont to the RPG, like crafting, leveling up, low XP gain and so on, so while Bioware tells us they want us to choose how to play it, in reality we are forced to explore and gather and craft (I am not one for crafting) and do all the dumbed down bits and pieces, and it is obvious that the game has been designed not by gaming experts but by some kind of executive board, answering questions like "How can we make sure they gather every single flower?", answer should have been, they dont it should be up to the player.

THe combat as other has mentioned does not have much tactical flowered, you cannot control a lot of commands and behavior control is limited to idiocity and the AI is not that clever either (what happened here Bioware, have you forgotten your past?) The skill/spell three is limited which has unfortunately become some kind of Bioware standard which means that already at level 3 you pretty much unlocked most of the pleasures or pain of combat (ok some things come later but its not like in a true RPG where you masterfully build up charactes and unlock new great fighting capabilites)

I didnt even thing DA 2 was that bad, yes it did reuse a lot of areas but at least it had some story, and again even though some people find the story good, I find DA3s story to be really boring, as well as your companions and all the talk, it is like they somehow magically made all the characters really irritation, boring and you just keep wondering "Who are these people around me? Get away!" anyone that has played earlier Bioware games knows how interesting the person gallery can be and how the story and the people drives the story and the game, but this? What is this? It's a kind of Star Wars Online (which is still a good game) in DA universe, not online and without star wars and somehow without the magic touch to make it a great game.

Controls are also an issue, as guessed it was for consoles, and even though you can somehow learn to live with it, there are quite a few irritating aspects here, also the tactical view is somewhat totally useless. (I would think that is something they would fix in a patch, but has not happened till now in patch 2)

Still, there are good things, the game world is large and consists of many, many areas and you can get a little Elder Scrolls (IV) Feeling. And it is not as bad as some people say, you can still waste some time playing this game as long as you accept the shortcomings and it will give you an experience which is a little above ok. Bioware during time has made some of my favorite games and with a little bit of old love they could still make more of those, but they need to look deep into themselves and rediscover some of that magic.

I'll tell you one thing: when the critics give a game an 85 and the users come in with a 58, you can be sure there are an awful lot of publications that are in the tank for EA. Something stinks in the gaming press.

The worst is some of the quests in the game. There are some that just make you walk for 10 minutes, grab a item, and then walk back (fetch quest ftw right?). You can speed it up with fast traveling, but it is still just a waste of your time. The rewards are not worth it, the experience are not worth it, and the game will just give you another quest to do the same thing, but different items. The combat is fine works well, and the story is pretty interesting, but the game has many many down times to it.

There is multiplier as well! And it is alright. It is very repetitive, and glitchy. I see potential with it though.

In the end I left Dragon age feeling very meh about it.

There is little to no responsiveness, impact or story in these quests, defying what Dragon Age is famous for.

The zones are huge, which is probably why there is little in the way of story or interaction in them; they've gone for a quantity not quality approach. They're attractive, but wandering around them doesn't evoke a sense of exploration so much as a feeling of frustration: "I want to go there, but you're not letting me, and are forcing me through all this filler to get to the cool stuff".

The classes have also been watered down, having devolved into a bunch of passive abilities and low-impact active ones that now rely on your standard attacks rather than having any weight of their own, and making combat into a grind-fest, again like old style MMO's. The "tactical" combat, whilst giving a bit more info during battle, is incredibly clunky and counter-intuitive to use, and they've slimmed down the AI of companions so that they never use the right abilities at the right time, do not stay in position or do what you request, and require you to constantly micro-manage them.

Big world changing decisions don't seem to actually mean anything, as they rarely result in any demonstrable change, and the limited variety of customisation available to you, your companions and the keep is a let down.

Dragon battles are mostly fun, but are exhausting and can grow tedious quickly

Primarily, the game becomes a grinding, grating chore, and there's little in the way of story or depth beyond the main quest.

To balance this somewhat, the companions, whilst mostly grating are quite interesting, the keep is fun if stale and non-interactive, judgements are cool, the areas are beautiful, and the main story is intriguing and gives some great revelations, it just lacks any of the emotional weight and depth of Dragon Age 2, which was the high point of the series despite its few, over-blown flaws (primarily repeated environments and enemies).

Mages are very weak, the impact is only alright and u die very fast...(yes there are barrier spells and stuff, but they have cooldowns and what is a full tank mage? [don´t bother with timing and stuff, we talk about average play]).
Fighting is actually pretty boring....i dont know...skills have no huge impact, you just use them if they are ready...but you never have this, BANG! FIREBALL feeling....enemys are way too tanky, not strong, but tanky...

there are tons of missions, quest and stuff, but actually not that much special to explore or find...like in skyrim or dragons dogma.

The graphics are amazing. I have a 4 year old gaming PC and it is one of the sharpest looking games I've played. Character animations and models look spectacular. Armor gleams and shines in the sunlight. The Water effects look amazing. The sound and dialog is great too. My party had usually the same 3 characters for most of the game and those 3 had dozens and dozens of conversations between each other that NEVER repeated. This is one thing Bioware excels at.

The game is huge. There are a good 20-30 missions in the first area alone and as the other areas open up and it almost gets mind boggling as to the number of quests you have to complete. The quests are your typical RPG fare, like the find # of X objects; bring A to B. There is one mini-game where you trace constellations without retracing previous lines that I loved but it was the only mini-game. They could have used a lockpicking mini-game or something.

I enjoyed the crafting system and crafted far superior weapons and armor then anything I found in a quest or from a vendor. Even when I slayed my last couple dragons, the loot didn't compare to what I could build so the victory was a little less sweet.

I would have enjoyed a d20 like combat system used in older Bioware games than the Diablo/WoW type combat system that every game seems to use nowadays. I guess doing hundreds or thousands of points of damage just looks more impressive on screen. Yawn.

Fighting giants and dragons was pretty epic, but there was a definite lack of variety in what I was fighting in 12 different areas. In a game this big, they should have added more unique enemies to fight repetition.

The Tactical view is a great idea. You can order your 4 characters and pause during combat, but what's strange is that the first time I used it, it was so bugged that I didn't try it again for awhile. My first dragon fight forced me to use it again and for some reason it worked fine then. The first time, my character warped around the battlefield at random and ignored most of the commands I issued. Very strange.

Another weird bug: keyboard lag. I've never had this happen in any other game. After entering a new area, the keys pressed could take a few second to respond but the mouse worked fine. I actually shut down all programs in the background and disabled the Origin overview. It was better afterwards but sometimes I still had to exit the game and reboot. Sometimes it was so frustrating that I had to walk away before I smashed my own keyboard. LOL. Also, I seemed to have a few crash to desktop when entering the War Room a few times and bugs where potions in my inventory would disappear. Not nearly as buggy as Skyrim when that first came out, though.

One annoying issue: after having a conversation with one of my most powerful warrior/tanks.. he just left the game. With no warning a character with my best armor and weapon must have had low approval of my decisions because he...just...vanished. LOL. Luckily I saved my game before and afterwards I just never initiated a conversation with him. How about a little heads up, Bioware? Like an approval indicator which I believe they had in older games like Knights of the Old Republic.

Dragon Age exists in is vast and unique world, but sometimes I have no idea what the NPCs are talking about. There's talk of the Chantry, the Grey Wardens and the Divine.. Andraste and the Seekers and Circle of Magi and blah, blah, blah. Sometimes I skipped through the cutscenes because they were long, dull and confusing. And, Slight spoiler: the villain is another bad guy trying to achieve god-hood through magic. Haven't they done this before in Balder's Gate? It just seemed a little bland and "cookie cutter" to me.

In a nutshell: A huge, beautiful RPG that should have stuck to an older combat system and should have worked out some bugs before being launched.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the possible dire consequences at the close of Mass Effect 2 and DA:Origins, followed by the travesty of ME3, BioWare played it ultra safe with the conclusion of DA:I.

The 60+ hours I put into playing had my imagination ramping up wildly, with no specific expectations for what would happen, but envisioning countless possibilities for what could happen. When reaching the end, it left me with a "that's it?" moment of confusion, then a feeling of hollowness when considering how little your characters and your related interactions play into the climactic moments.

Even ignoring the lack of player's choices and interactions impacting the closing moments, the crushing moment was that there really is no events or moments offered to be impacted. No turmoil, no internal struggle, no 2nd guessing any motivation/action/intention/alliance/etc that took place up to that point. A final battle in a bubble, isolated and shallow.

Everything up till then though? Pretty fantastic, an amazing accomplishment on BioWare's part, but I would have traded it all in for one jaw-dropping moment and tough choice before the denouement.

EA is crap and this game is not Dragon Age. Dragon Age Origins is the one and only Dragon Age game ever made and we are going to have to wait for someone other than Bioware to make a sequel because EA has obviously got their hands on this franchise. Not surprised by this garbage. EA has a long history of taking great games and destroying them.

I have given dragon age: Inquisition a fair chance because I really really wanted to like this game. I have spent an ungodly amount of time playing the first two installments of the dragon age series. Adored Origins and still uphold it as one of the best games ever made, I recognized dragon age II's many flaws but still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Let me start off with what in my opinion is the biggest problem that Inquisition has: The controls. In the first 15 or so minutes or playing i already felt incredibly irritated with how bad these controls are. In an rpg, it is pretty standard that holding both mouse buttons or clicking on a location on the floor causes your character to move, in this game it causes you to attack, which forces you to wait out a tediously long attack animation before you can move again. Which bring me to the second controls problem: the auto attacking. In the previous games right clicking an enemy caused you to automatically auto attack that target over and over again, in this game you only attack once, which forces you to spam your mouse button trough a majority of the game. This is most likely because for a console game this would make sense, as is with most control problems in this game. Looting the enemy corpses is incredibly tedious and much more difficult than it was in the previous installments, which only adds to the irritation. There are many more control problems to go over but since i have a 5000 character max it wont fit into 1 review. I wish i was joking.

Second problem: The gameplay. Gameplay in the first two dragon age games required planning and working out an attack plan before engaging in combat (much more so in origins than in 2) but in this game the combat seems to be completely action oriented with little to no tactics involved at all. 80% of the time you are really just mashing buttons (this counts for normal but also hard and nightmare mode) pretty much all the challenge has left the game and it seems to barely count as an RPG anymore, if it is at all. Another problem with the gameplay is that the RPG elements have been extremely dumbed down: You can no longer assign your stat points to the stats of your choice, you can only have one specialization for your character (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), the skilltrees feel incredibly limited and the skillsets endorse mindless combat. In Origins you had extreme freedom over what your characters ended up being like in terms of gameplay and skillsets, in this game you have option A or option B, which as an RPG fan is incredibly disappointing.

Third problem: Instability. This game has a lot of basic issues ranging from crashing to downright strange and annoying bugs and glitches. I've ended up being stuck in the environment many, many times. And I have had to replay certain parts of the game because of crashes more times than is acceptable. The graphics glitch often as well and some characters look downright ugly and horribly designed. I have a high end gaming PC and an excellent graphics card and even for me the hair in this game often glitched and sometimes even disappeared.

The only good thing i can say about this game is that the characters are excellently written and the environments are beautiful but it suffers form many many issues and bugs that more often than not serve to irritate the player to no end. As a former Bioware fanboy and RPG enthusiast I honestly cannot recommend that you but this game.

This game looks amazing. It really does. There is no question about it. Landscapes in DA:I are simple amazing and very different: grim marches, barren deserts (maybe a bit too barren), farmlands, lash tropical forests, mountains, frozen lakes and so on. A lot of times i found myself standing on some cliff and just admiring the view. Models are clearly better than in DA2, but i think some (large ones, like dragons) could have i bit more love. Plus corpses usually just vanish into thin air. Thanks to inferior consoles hardware.
Also i have to mention amazing soundtrack. To be honest last year (2014) was very good for great soundtracks. And DA:I one can easily compete in that regard with any blockbuster movie. There not so much games where i can stuck in main menu just to listen to main theme. Or just sit in tavern to listen to bard songs.
Now to the sad part. Game mechanics. I have only one word for that: abysmal. This "tactical view" gives you more troubles than helps. Camera angle, camera distance, controls (at least with keyboard and mouse - proper PC controls i have to add) feels like were made to drive you mad in that mode. So i stopped trying to use it after first mission or something like that. Inventory. I remember how much critique DA2 received for limiting inventory not by some mystical slots for the whole party (nope, your super strong buddy warrior can't be a mule now). Or for that "all armor" in one slot thing for anyone except main character. That **** didn't go anywhere guys, it's just get worth. Now everyone have just 8 slots for equipment: 2 for weapons, armor, helm, necklace, belt, 2 rings. Same "answer ring" **** Also i have to mention that i played as a mage in all DA games and with each new iteration mages are less and less fun to play. In DA:O you could summon fire tornado (massive AoE), blizzard, throw balls of fire and so on. And that was your main source of damage. In DA2 spells were less impressive, less of spells overall and more of your damage came from auto attacks. In DA:I there can be literally 2 active spells per magic school (+some passives). Visually not impressive at all. Plus you limited not only by mana, but also by spells cooldowns. So usually you find yourself in situation when after initial barrage with your spells all you abilities are on CD and you can only pew-pew from your staff. So most of the fight you auto attacking waiting for some spell to finish its CD. So much fun...And i'll not be surprised that most damage from mages is actually auto attack damage.
But the most sad part that DA:I made like a single player MMORPG. There is a story quest-line, but you can't just follow it - you need levels and equipment. And to get that do some MMORPG like quests! Most dull ones. Like get 3 bear paws, 10 goat meat and so on. So there are about 8 story missions that will take you for about 10 hours to complete and about 40+ more hours of this generic "kill 10 rats" side quests. This is the most infuriating thing about DA:I for me. It's a singleplayer game! If i want a MMORPG experience i'll go and play some WoW not something that labelled as a singleplayer RPG.
Now to the plot. You know, when i finished DA2 for the first time i was sitting before my PC and wandering what new i was told about DA world? And i couldn't answer that question. Whole game was like a spin-off: while your mage saving Ferelden your another mage discovers that power can be abused (who can thought of such thing!). So from DA:I with all that videos about demons, guy what was (probably) in Golden City and so on i was waiting at least something new about dark spawns, demons or Maker lore. Did i get anything of that? Nope. WTF is red lyrium maybe? That thing that played a major role in this game? Nope. The only thing you get is some elven lore.
So if this game was named like "Inquisition vs evil rats" and have nothing to do with DA i probably rate it as 7/10. But it's the third (forth if we count Awakening) and i have some expectations about it. So it's nothing greater than 5/10.

    positive compared to previous games:
    - nice-looking big world

    - combat graphics have somewhat improved since DA2

    - nice character creation options

    negative compared to previous games:
    - the story writing is extremely bad

    - weird dialog (bad voice acting, weird choices, still no good facial expressions, linear gameplay)

    - boring and repetitive side quests

    - very limited combat options (only 6 attacks possible, controlling multiple characters at once seems worthless and impossible)

    - extremely bad combat controls on pc (in melee combat I often find myself fighting air or attacking the wrong opponents, attacking moving opponents with melee is almost impossible, the flashy combat makes it often impossible to see what you're doing, tactical view seems worthless and often gets stuck in walls or ceilings, etc., etc.)

If you like games like WOW you might also like this game, but in my opinion this game doesn't pass as a good story driven RPG.

Such as the Wolf of the Wilds quest in Dragon Age Origins, or when I almost die in the Fade. I had to re-load a save from 3 hours earlier just to stock up on potions to complete these quest.

I had one surprise in this game about 10 to 15 hours into it, but that was it.. (there were many other small encounters that were interesting and could have been built on). I feel like someone made Bioware dial down the creativity nob and not add a little strange eeriness to the game. Perhaps it's still to come.. But like I said, I'm 103 hours into the game. I think I'm 75 percent complete.

    Story 7, Gameplay 9, Graphics 10

Eitherway, it's an awesome game.. I'll be buying all the DLC for sure, thanks for so much content to begin with!!!!!

Bottom line, if I don't compare to the first to DA's.. this is a 10.

BTW, I gave Mass Effect 3 a 10 all the way, and loved the original ending Thank you for so much content in the original release!! They could have totally had like 4 DLC's but Bioware did the respectable thing and included a lot of content in the basic version!

The inclusion of the mostly open world system was the biggest step forward for Dragon Age as a whole, finding the perfect balance between the way-too-small and repetitive map areas of DAII, and the completely open world model that would make the game quite difficult to play. It carries all of the staples of the modern polished RPG, and presents it in such a beautiful and complete experience that it is my personal Game of the Year. Bioware really has their hands on gold if they can keep this pace with the sequel.

Character progression is very simplistic, the tactical view is broken and you never really need to use it anyway. In a few words tactical combat is (still) dead.

The main villain lacks personality and depth, it makes me miss Jon Irenicus and how awesome he was and the main quest feels like only the first chapter of a biggest story. Some things still need an explanation, a resolution, most of the choices you made doesn't affect the ending, they are just for the next DLC or probably the next game. The ending is so much sequel/DLC bait and the final fight is totally anti climatic and feels rushed. Not to mention the bugs and glitches on pc. I finished it in 150 hours but almost 100 was just running around collecting stuff. I give it a 7, Origins is by far the better RPG in the series.

There are other reviews with details so I'll leave it at that: If you're a real RPG game player and play on a PC, DAI is pure frustration. My guess is that console gamers don't know any better and so will give you a more positive spin. Expand

Dragon Age: Inquisition is riding on a lot of expectations. Many people had hoped this game would bring us back to the deep and complex gameplay seen in the original game, rather than the oversimplified hack-and-slash fest that was Dragon Age 2.

In many ways, Inquisition does capture many of the original game's "feel", but it also carries over an equal amount of gameplay mechanics from Dragon Age 2 that turned many people off. I suspect this is the primary reason why the scores have been so polarized: in a number of ways, Inquisition does feel like dressed-up, prettier looking version of Dragon Age 2, and for many people that is just disappointing.

The biggest complaint probably lies in the gameplay, which is best described as an attempt to merge the more traditional, old-school RPG gameplay found in Origins with the more action-oriented system seen in DA2, Unfortunately, the result ended up feeling far too similar to DA2, with only token considerations given to Origin's mechanics. For example, a tactical camera is available that allows you to pause the game and methodically issue orders to individual party members, which can sometimes be useful in longer or larger scale battles. However, due to the fact that the vast majority of skills available to your characters are spam-and-forget (there isn't even any healing abiltiies, instead, each character carry a limited number of potions that are automatically used when they are low on health and refilled when you return to camp), and the combat being generally fast-paced (that is to say, a chaotic smash fest), there's little reason to bother with strategic plays over simply spamming your skills until your enemy is dead. Character development is similarly limited, with the only benefit from leveling up being skill points that are used to learn a limited selection of skills or spells, and the ability to wear higher-level gear.

It's clear Inquisition's gameplay mechanic was designed with "keep it simple" in mind, most likely to keep it appealing to as many players as possible. Hardcore gamers hoping for an old-school gaming experience will probably feel unsatisfied and consider the gameplay "shallow".

Having said that, if you can look past these design decisions, there's still a relatively rich and interesting game here. Inquisition picks up the story where the previous games left off, and I personally enjoyed returning to the land and lore of Dragon Age, which feels just as unique and interesting as ever. Characters and party members you meet are generally interesting and it's always fun to see how they interact with one another during your outings. There are plenty of returning characters - from cameos to full on party members - to keep veterans happy as well. The story is well written and although it meanders a bit at certain points, it remains relatively engaging and entertaining.

When you are not fighting or talking to people, you're probably exploring the various areas of the world in large sprawling maps littered with side-quests. Yes, many of these are simple fetch quests, while others involve (ugh) collectibles, but these are generally well-placed so that you will find interesting vistas, landmarks, or other neat things to see as you travel from task to task, if you're into that sort of thing.

A quick word on hardware. I play the game on high settings with a GTX770 and have had absolutely no issues. Frame rates remained solid and I have never once experienced stutters or slowdowns. This game is clearly designed to be played with a gamepad though, which I quickly switched to after realizing a mouse+keyboard is simply unnecessary and cumbersome for a game like this.

At the end of the day, if you can look past what this game is not (a spiritual successor to Origins) and focus on what it does have to offer (a solid game with a rich cast of characters and interesting lore) you will likely enjoy Inquisition.

    Updated Review:

So I bought DA:I for $60 on Origin's 24 hour guarantee. I played it for about 5 hours, loathed it, and returned it, leaving a score of 1 here (with many reasons listed).

Now, after playing it again for 30+ hours, my thoughts have turned around quite a bit.

Instead of go through my previous review, I will try to sum up my feelings at this point:

    1) They did not put a good foot forward for the first, oh, 10 hours or so of the game: boring story-line, dull scenery, dull quests, etc. After you finally get to a point where you have to the "choosing" quest, the game's story line improves dramatically. Once you are able to unlock more than 3 areas, the scenery is greatly diversed as well.

    2) This is still my #1 complaint: they removed the tactics. The AI is NOT smart enough to handle some of the more complicated spells, this should be rectified in a mod.

    3) The attention to detail graphically (textures and meshes) are astounding in some parts: one example are the stone walls, it doesn't matter how close up you get the camera to them, they all look like individual, well textured rocks stacked on top of each other to build a wall. The character work is excellent and high-mesh quality minus the hair, which is rather sad considering the quality of the rest of the people.

    4) #2 main complaint: if you start off with a KB+M, (just like the previous DAs), you will hate this game. It will leave quite an awful taste in your mouth. For PCMRs, the thought of HAVING to use a controller to enjoy a Dragon Age came is just pathetic. Well, I had to get over it, and when I finally did, it was much more enjoyable.

Summary: The primary reason I am going from a 1 to 7 is because this is a good, enjoyable game, but when you combine the awful KB+M with the dull starting story and fetch quests, the neutering of tactics and healing magic and gimped ability trees, it gives an awful first impression for a DA game.

Now, with 30 hours under my belt, I can say it is a worthy successor to the series, although I am still skeptical on whether the combat is going in the right direction (and for hardcore cRPG players, the combat will take 20+ hours before you get used to it).

On the other side, it become a bit repetitive after the first couple areas, and a couple of them just sort of have *weird* design... hard to describe - feels like it was a mario level stuck into an RPG game.

The combat is pretty fun, but becomes repetitive pretty quickly. I played as a mage and part of the problem is that I achieved high level spells very quickly so there really wasn't a whole lot of reason to strive there after.

The story is vast, if a bit disjointed. There were times when I was pretty confused as what to do, and other times I was just kind of... bored. Not much of the story really grabbed me - it's basically stop the ancient evil that wants to destroy the world.

The graphics are truly astounding and kuddos to the developers for this.

So, how do you rate a game? I think one of the primary criterion would be do you want to play it again? In truth I have very little desire to pick the game up again - even as a different character - so all, in all I give it a 6.

Dragon Age Origins was better....in EVERY... SINGLE.... DEPARTMENT. The only real bright spot was the use of the Frostbite 3 engine. DAI is pretty. The zones look better! Thanks DICE! It's a fairly sad say when you have to say the bestparts of a 'Bioware' game don't actually come from 'Bioware'.

Inquisition finally FAILS as a gaming experience, because it was not seriously designed as a western RPG at all. Instead it was designed (1): As an advertising ploy to sell console software to kids (and their parents). (2) As some kind of interactive MELODRAMA to appease a 'civil rights' agenda that has gone out of control. We have all enjoyed being gay in DA since Zevran in Origins already! As in the real world, the sexuality of the people is NOT AN ISSUE. Why then, does it have to be such a central theme in the Bioware mindset! You guys are CREEPY! For most of us our private lives are private! They are not central to our public functions. Gay or straight can you stop with the sex obsession already! Why are romance options So IMPORTANT with you people! Is this a fantasy RPG or a dating sim?

Mike Laidlaw was obviously so consumed by fear that the game wouldn't sell enough console copies that he continued the ongoing simplification (hollowing) of the game mechanics. This may not be obvious at first because the game LOOKS SO GOOD. But as you play more the return dividend on 'play' diminishes steadily over time. In the end it is not a game that invites multiple replays. One play through is boring enough. This is NOT GOOD for a 'western RPG', where the whole point is multiple returns.

The good parts of the game: the writing and the voice acting, the scenery and the zones are effectively WASTED by a game that has almost ZERO role-playing or character development options AT ALL! If you thought DA2 was bad, it actually got worse. Worse skill sets. Less control of stats. The crafting is a DUD (incredibly tedious).

    Bad combat controls.

    Useless tactical camera.

    DREADFUL party AI.

    Boring, repetitive encounters.

    Boring, repetitive quests.

The Wartable is a farce. We were promised we would have power and influence in the world of Thedas. that turned out to be BS. The Wartable is a faux mini-game designed to waste time and have us tread water while we grind our way through the lovingly made NPC backstories. Now the backstories ARE good! If inter-active cinema is your thing, fine! However for every thrilling bedroom scene with Iron Bull there is a hell of a lot of grinding to endure. The Wartable could have been the heart of the game. Should have been the heart of the game. However no 'game design' was applied at all in this critical space. BIG FAIL!

    I won't go on.

In conclusion the game is something of a mess. It looks great. It LOOKS great. The writing is good and the romance options are fun. The cut scenes are FANTASTIC. The interplay and backstories of the NPCs are great. The zones are exciting when you first explore them. The idea of being master of the inquisition sounds appealing.

However none of that makes for a great game. Behind the great façade lies a sadly mediocre and disappointing GAME.

Bioware have truly forgotten and abandoned their own Origins and their core fan base.

I have played 50 hours on PC version,i have not finished the game and i just don't want to play anymore, this game is that boring.

    Let's begin with the cons:

    - Multiple side quests...yes,this is a negative here, because mostly of them are pointless and repetitive and accomplish absolutely nothing,i have played 50 hours making side quests and the majority of main quests...i don't want to finish this game anymore...
    - No tactical combat...actually i just use the tactical camera to see the weakness of the enemies and nothing else,it's just useless, the game is an improved hack' n' slash button mashing from the previous game, the control is odd also...
    - **** ugly character movements and emotions...yes the graphic has improved but the game is just...weird,the armors are ugly, the enemies look all the same and what the hell happened with the badass Darkspawn from DAO?
    - **** of glitches...i mean,a lot,people poping in,bears flying,giants flying,two Cassandras in a cut scene,not beginning quests...
    - What happened with those nice spells from DAO?Now it is just some explosion or circles in the ground...just meh...i liked the spells in DAO graphically speaking

    Now the Pros

    - Voice acting is good
    - Story doesn't compromise but it's just average
    - Mention on the Hero of Ferelden and cameo of the Champion
    - Skyhold is nice
    - The war table as a good idea, need improvement tough
    - Music and sound are really good
    - Companions

Unfortunately the pros doesn't even come close with the cons,i actually regret buying this game...even after the deception from DA2...i guess no more Dragon Age...unfortunately they will never deliver something close with DAO that is a masterpiece.

Fantastic game and money well spent. I've put in 150 hours into this game and regret none of it. Fantastic story, which is rare this day and age. Game play was also extremely well done. Only issue I had with the game was the glitches, which is common among large scale games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

Like many others, I liked DAO, but DA2 was lacking. Bioware/EA should’ve learned from previous mistakes, but this was not the case. There are too many negatives for DAI to receive a good rating:

    - The K+M controls are awful.
    - The tactical view is horrendous and difficult to use. This was an easily avoidable mistake.
    - The tactics and strategy have been severely downgraded, if not removed altogether. DA:O had better strategy, and felt more rewarding using it.
    - The combat has devolved into holding the K+M buttons down, and not doing much else.
    - There is no auto-attack, which is beyond senseless. This makes controlling the characters much more difficult, especially warriors and rogues.
    - The AI is deplorable, with the squad often not following orders.
    - The menus are unnecessarily unwieldy – the DAO menus and inventory management were better.
    - Having to manually loot is a big pain.
    - The game engine is not at all optimised, which is quite disappointing. It maxes out the CPU, GPU and RAM while delivering mediocre FPS. Even with top-line rigs, many have complained about the lag and FPS volatility.
    - Unlike DAO and many other games, the game does not stop processing when the user Alt-Tabs back to the desktop. Thus, it keeps chewing resources for no good reason.
    - While the graphics quality is quite good, it is still below par for what one would expect for a 2014 game. A modified Skyrim (2011) and ME3 (2012) matches or perhaps surpasses DAI when graphics settings are maxed, and without the lags.
    - While the voice acting is generally good, it doesn’t seem to match the quality from the ME series. Something just seems off with the VO in DAI.
    - The choice of topic in the conversation menu often results in lines which are quite different to what the user had chosen.
    - The party banter is often banal, often discussing matters that are not remotely interesting or funny. Both DAO and DA2 were far ahead in this respect.
    - Given the issues with the VO in DAI, Bioware would’ve been better off focusing on producing better conversations and higher quality VO, rather than having four sets of VO (quantity over quality).
    - The development of the most important character, the Inquisitor, is completely lacking.
    - Likewise, the development of the squad is impotent, at best. The ME series, including DAO, was far better in this respect. Only Cassandra appears to have developed over the course of the game, and is probably the most interesting because of this.
    - The story felt quite underwhelming, and severely disjointed. It felt that choices didn’t matter, resulting in no clear good or bad paths, just a whole lot of grey decisions that don’t really mean anything.
    - Bioware has tried producing a hybrid RPG and MMORPG, and has failed in both aspects.
    - The MMORPG aspect is clearly designed to appeal to those types of players, and keeps users in the game far longer than is justified. The grinding for resources turns what should be an epic game into an unsatisfying slog.
    - The War Table is the Bioware’s attempt to introduce some small token of strategy (or at least the feeling of), but has simply reproduced ME3’s failed ‘assets gathering’ strategy which leads to nothing more than an endless variety of flavours of the same type (vanilla). It has no real effect on the game, especially the ending.
    - It makes no sense at all, from an RPG perspective, to have the player accumulate power points in order to proceed to the next phase of the story.
    - Closing the numerous Fade Rifts, which is tied in to the primary story, has been rendered into another meaningless chore.
    - The removal of healing spells and auras has made the game worse, removing a cornerstone of both RPGs and MMORPGs. Spamming potions is the new tactic which feels cheap, and is automatically restocked when travelling back to camp.
    - The endless and pointless quests get tiresome; it does nothing for advancing or making the story better. The ‘fetch my pet goat’ quests can only be recycled so much. Someone who is the head of the powerful Inquisition should not even be provided the option of doing these utterly inane quests.
    - The neutering of the talents, especially the mage, degrades the game. The option for a blood mage, which is one of the cornerstones of the DA series, doesn’t exist. It would’ve been better to have an option to train to become a blood mage, rather than introduce the three new schools.
    - There are no skills, apart from the general ones (Inquisition perks). It makes no sense that these neutered skills should accrue according to some generalised ‘influence’ meter. DAO had the correct implementation: skills become available as the character’s experience increases.

After ME3’s horrible ending and subsequent debacle, Bioware should’ve learned its lesson: focus on the story, the whole story, and nothing but the story. With DAI, it is clear this did not occur. The result is a game that is far below its potential - it could’ve been so much more.

    +Cassandra is a bad-ass character
    everything else is garbage:
-Tactical camera is terrible: it gets stuck on rocks, limited zoom out
-no healing magic.......you just spam healing potions
-no click to loot or auto loot...you have to move near an object and click on it
-character development nearly non existent.......why remove the attribute points ?
-really poor optimization: for examples battlefield 3 which uses the same engine runs perfectly on my pc
-no more death injuries: now you can die whenever you want without penalties
-did I mention the ugly as death pc controls ?
-no auto attack: you have to keep the left mouse button pressed all the time to do basic attacks

Dragon Age: Inquisition takes place some time after Dragon Age 2 (I dont remember the exact amount of time) during the war between the Templar and the Mages. A summit is called to try and bring peace to both sides from the chantry (Dragon Age's representation of religion) and as you can imagine, things go horribly wrong.

Now that the little bit of backstory is out of the way I would like to talk about how impressed I was with this game. The graphics are beautiful, the story is solid and has decent continuity and the combat is fluid and an absolute blast. This game is a loot whores wet dream as well, with an expansive world absolutely filled to the brim with goodies and bits of lore.

The pro's of the game are
    -Strong action packed combat
    -Good Story
    -Good controls (on a controller)
    -Absolutely MASSIVE world
-Interesting companions (I think this may be the best set of companions ever made by Bioware, and thats saying quite a bit)

However even with all those incredibly solid foundations, there are definitely a few dark spots that keep the game from being an absolutely perfect experience

    The con's are
    -PC controls are sub par
-The world can sometimes have too much to do, leading to some grinding
-The story starts a bit slow
-Lower end systems may have some trouble running it
-The confounded looting animation has to play on EVERYTHING

So there really isnt too much holding back Dragon Age Inquisition to be being a worthy successor to the first two titles. And it frustrates me to see people stop playing after 15 minutes and start hating on the game because it is different from how Dragon Age Origins felt. Not worse, just different but some people can equate the two as the same thing if they are a die hard fanboy.

Absolutely the game of the year in 2014 in my opinion, and 100% worth your money.

Sound is minimal but immersive, although sometimes the volume levels seem a bit random. Characters are deep and story driven, and choices are interesting and thoughtful.

Gameplay is often unbearable. If the fight is complex at all you can't really rely on the AI to keep your 3 party members from killing themselves, running off or attacking the wrong thing so you need to micro, which means using the tactical camera. Because of the open world idea for this game, the camera has real problems in confined spaces. AI and tactical cam combine to give everything an extra layer of difficulty. Tank aggro is about as reliable as any of the previous DA games too.

Behaviours or tactics have taken a big step back from the previous games. You pretty much rely on the AI to pick the best spells to use rather than setting a priority list.

It's not perfect, but it is a wonderful hiking simulator, much like Skyrim was a few years ago. The combat could have been so much better, but the rest is spot on. It's almost as shame fighting is so important.

More importantly, they had heart. Players felt one with the worlds (and universes) that the company created. This was certainly true with Knights of the Old Republic, Baldurs Gate, Mass Effect 1 & 2, and Dragon Age: Origins. These games are timeless and will always have a place on my shelf even as other games come and go. But DA: Inquisition lacks something. It lacks emotion. It lacks heart. Over its last 5 years, Bioware has catered to the lowest common denominator of gamers. Now owned by EA, Bioware is destroying its brand for mass market appeal. Inquisition is a boring hack and slash that is one part RPG and two parts MMO wannabe. Even worse, it's not optimized and horribly buggy. Inquisition lacks elements that made DA: Origins great while delivering tons of frustrating problems we shouldn't see from a venerable developer.

Foremost, DA:I is buggy garbage. Its hardware demands are outrageous even on modest settings. On Ultra it merely looks OK. But older games like The Witcher 2 and Far Cry 3 look better and require less power. Overheating is a persistent issue with Inquisition. And I thought Shadows of Mordor was a resource hog. Nope. DA:I wins the prize. Even this year's terrible Wolfenstein performs better. That's saying a lot. Constant fps drops, abysmal tactical view, and stilted character animations break the immersion. The tactical view should've been one of the best features of the game. After all, DA:Origins provides a pretty good template to follow. Right? Nope. In DA:I, the camera gets hung up on nearly everything. Plus, other problems with the game render it pointless. Most of the time, DA:I won't acknowledge my 360 controller. So I have to log completely out of my desktop, log back in, turn on the controller, and then open the game. If that process doesn't fix the issue, I have to close the game, disable my controller in hardware settings, enable it, then open the game again. Sheesh!!

Gameplay is a mixed bag. Companion AI is stupid and useless on harder difficulties. So constant babysitting is required which makes fights more frustrating (I should say annoying) than they should be. Commands cancel each other out, and characters generally won't perform the actions you specify. The deep AI customization of DA:Origins is not perfect, but better than the tripe served to us here. Inquisition's worthless companion AI and buggy tactical camera means the game is hardly playable. These problems affect the game so adversely I can't recommend playing it on Nightmare.

Leveling up is a bland affair. Forget attributes such as strength, cunning, and dexterity. The game allocates those points on the player's behalf. Bioware obviously believes more options would confuse its new mass market. Diablo 3 does the same thing, and fans don't appreciate it there either. For players who want a two-handed warrior focusing on dexterity and not strength. Nope. You want a mage with huge mana pools and low health. Nope. A strength-focused rogue? Nope. But players can craft. Oh yes, who doesn't want to spend hours searching for elfroot or crafting shoes? Every warrior must have secret dreams of being a cobbler, or blacksmith. *Roll eyes*. Armor ought to be buried in a crypt so I can don it after an epic boss fight. Simple. Rewarding. Better.

The voice acting is laughably bad. Characters sound like they're gargling marbles. Sometimes I turn down the volume so my ears don't explode. And the music, or lack thereof, is completely uninspired. The story lacks urgency. And why would should players feel pressure to save the world? Bioware would rather players craft obsidian fanny packs or whatever. The world is shallow, and attempts at depth come thru corny voice acting and hokie faux religious dogma.

And then there is the tacked on multiplayer. It sucks. Dragon Age was a fine series without it. But EA ramrods multiplayer into every game. All wasted resources that could've been used to fix the dozens of problems with the campaign.

This review is not as thorough as I'd like, but I honestly have nothing positive to say about the game. Inquisition is so buggy it's a beta. Another product rushed to market by EA. EA's philosophy of sale a buggy game first then fix it later is EA figuratively putting its middle finger in the face of gamers. With every release EA is saying a big "F U" to players.

Overall, Inquisition is a failed effort by Bioware to relive its glory days. The game is a step back in all the areas that made Origins epic. Instead, Bioware pushes the same tired elements on players which have worn out their welcome in every other rpg/mmo. Namely tedious crafting, fetch quests, and stripped down leveling systems. So many elements are tacked on, I doubt Bioware and EA are trying anymore.

    PROTAGONIST AND COMPANIONS

Protagonist character got no story, no background, no development, no motivation.
You not play your story, but someone else story, which is so confusing. Actualy, entire story is to get some random unknown person (protagonist) to kill unknown boss without any motivation.

Companions's stories are extremly weak too. Companions are interesting as persons but not so interesting as party members. And even that is their entire potencial is lost. Absolutly no emotions there.
This is the worst for Solas, who is actualy MAIN character of game, but the game is not going to tell you! Companions got nothing special, they not part of story, they got no special powers or weaknes. They affect nothing. Nothing. They are just dolls in armor for you.

Romances are extremly short and the most sexy character available for your protagonist CANNOT be member of your party!!!

Nothing you do is affecting world or game. Everyting is the same or randomly generated.

    COMBAT

Combat looks wierd. Especialy when you watching your main character with huge axe making his strongest special attack which tears rocks apart and making ground into fire and lava and… that peacefull forest animal you hit lost just 10% of health…

Character camera is wierd and you will NEVER (!) feel like you are in game, in combat, in action. Never. Not posible. Camera is totaly wrong, its killing entire action feeling. You ll never be conected with your protagonist.

Tactic camera and tactic mode is horrible and unusable.

Characters moves are wierd. Sometimes they move unnaturaly extremly fast and sometimes when its needed (avoid danger) extremly slow or they stuck and die.

Entire combat system is very simple. Nothing awesome, nothing special, its just simple and fine.

Hardest difficulty of game is not rewarding. At first its confusing and unbalanced (single character cannot win one-to-one combat) and at second too easy. No tactics needed. All tactic is to let party spam RANDOM (!) spells until enemies die.

Combat is too short. If there is like 24 abilities for your character and all combats takes just few seconds… thats wierd.

    DRAGONS

They awesome. Good work I say. Combat with them is fine too.

    FINAL BOSS

You can do one shoot kill final boss at hardest difficulty. Its not challenging or epic or… Its just awfull.

    CRAFTING

Its not part of game mechanics. Its based just on farming and spending hours in endless and pointless farming. So if you bored and actually love running in empty areas farming texts and numbers, then this is perfect game for you.

    REPLAY VALUE

None. Game is absolutly the same, no matter what choices, races, classes, skills or any other things you choose or do. Nothing mather and alter.

    ENGINE

Games engine is awesome and game and all areas looks extremly pretty. Ill say for engine grafic is like 9/10.
But… level design is horible. Actualy there is no such thing like level design. There is no design at all. All maps and/or levels are the same wierdo boring areas.
GRAFIC and DESIGN Sorry, game got NO design and NO grafic (grafic and engine are different things, engine is awesome in this game) TARROT CARDS They so awesome. Very pretty. But the are just on load screens. They not part of game. Their grafic is not part of game too. So sad. MUSIC and SOUND Sound effects… I dont remember them so they not good. Boring and unnoticed. Music is fine, but without main theme and too many genres, very cheap music. USER INTERFACE (PC) Horrible, horrible, horrible. There is no excuse. This is totaly wrong. CUSTOMER SERVICE (digital purchase) Horrible. It takes too much effort to run the game. Extremly boring and annoying too. RESULT Boring, repetive game, without depth. Too large empty areas with few random enemies. Battles short and too easy. Awfull unacceptable level desing. Farming. To many scatter NPC but no real deep story. PC control and interface is mess. No emotions, not rewarding. No challenge. Final boss one shooted (hardest difficulty). - Blackmorn sorry for my english

I really hate those boring sidequests, but I gave them a try. However, in this game I cannot even do many of those as some areas are locked for certain level. And why the hell they put 12 or whatever level monsters in a starting area? I wanna leave it as fast as possible, but game makes me come back and deal with those rifts and demons when I level up! And I can`t even get to some places as moving around is so complicated. People said "leave the Hinterlands". I did. Same stuff all over the world. I wanna do thngs and move on, not backtrack! And I have to force my self to play this. I hate when there is too much stuff going on and I lose track of things. Those areas on war table - I`ll forget what I haven`t accoplished in some of those. OK, I think many people find it great to explore every inch of theese kind of games, but for me it`s nightmare. The main story is a bit lacking, i admit. But if that is the only reason you picked this game up then yeah, you will be disappointed. I'm 80 hrs in, and have done maybe a third of all the content. Truth be told, I don't want to complete all content this play through as I would like to make some different choices next time.

I played a female elf mage hoping to get down on some sweet girl on girl action in the romance scenes, unfortunately I went the straight route. Next time, I will play a male to see what Josephine is all about. The stories in this game are great. There is literally hours and hours and hours of dependent dialogue here. Verrick and Ironbull are great, I want to have a beer with them.

Graphic naysayers be damned, this game is beautiful and immersive.

Two big negatives: Not enough hot keys! I'm a mage, towards late game I ran out of hot keys for my spells, honestly that is VERY lame. The AI companion behaviors was dumbed down considerably from Origins. Personally, I would have liked a bit more options there, but I also get bored of all that **** so it wasn't a deal breaker for me like some more "hard core" players.

This game can be as challenging or as easy as you take it. I'm playing on hard and as long as I don't rush it, I'm finding the boss fights aren't overwhelming, ie, I COULD spend the whole fight(a couple of hours in some cases) in the lacking tactical mode getting my idiot companions to avoid the obvious fireballs, or I could just wander around and see what Thedas has to offer for another level or two.

    And you can't swim. wtf?!

Other than that, this game is beautiful, immersive, and reads like a B novel. If you were a fan of semi decent nerd fantasy novels as a teenager, the story will more than suffice. Get it

First of all: combat. It completely lack any depth. It's basically a button mashing fest. They have turned auto attack off, so every time you want to hit you have to click. It's stupid that after Origins, a game that had amazing tactical combat, they dumb the combat system down so much.

Second: the game lacks any form of challenge. It's too easy. I've played the game on hard and I didn't need to change characters at all and tactics are completely useless.

Third: the story. Both the story and the characters are mediocre and cliched. None of the characters are memorable which is sad because Origins had an amazing set of characters.

Graphics. I would say they are at/around Crisis 3 in world/texture detail, which is pretty damn good for the amount of world content (deserts, forests, plains, mountains, snowy tundra, you name it) and objects (from weapons and armor to wall hangings to desks to farmers tools etc etc).

Story. TBH: it seems run of the mill if you only play up until Skyhold and never played DAO/DA2 or took the time to set up your history at dragonagekeep. But if you do play past Skyhold, and you have invested into the story thus far and the lore behind the game, it is really very well done. I found myself deeply immersed every time I moved the story forward, and that's what I look for in an RPG.

Characters: There are some really tough choices to make this time around, and the game is very LGBT friendly, for which I am thankful. Bioware took the training wheels off the dialogue wheel as well. What you see are options like "I am sorry for your loss", "What's life without a little death?", "You need to pull yourself together", and "Just get back to work" all at once, with both major and minor consequences for your choices throughout the game. This, of course, affects quest lines, the ending, and romance options constantly.

Side note: Characters have their shoulders pushed forward, for whatever damn reason IDK, but its REALLY awkward. Maybe they will patch it. I hope so. Not really a negative per say, but close.

World/Lore: Holy crap, if you wanted to know about Thedas, the Blight, or... anything, get this game! There must be thousands of pages worth of lore scattered throughout Fereldan and Orlais (this is probably an underestimation). The world is masterfully crafted, and the artistry and fine detail are exquisite. Truly well done, Bioware.

Music/Ambiance/SFX: The open world music can get a little dry sometimes, since they decided to reuse combat music and general ambient music quite often. The music in the Inns, boss fights, cut scenes, special fights, and pretty much everywhere else BUT open world exploration is really quite good. Ambient sounds like birds chirping, wolves howling, wind blowing, rocks falling, etc, are very well done, to the point that it feels natural. SFX such as combat clashes, doors, footsteps, etc feel meaty and thought out, and even help immersing yourself in the game.

All and in all a great game. I am glad I sidestepped my ban on EA games to support Bioware's latest and greatest--it was well worth it. The ban is back in place, but hey, they gave me a free copy of Sim City 2000 for the Holidays, so maybe they ARE trying? Nahhh.... we'll see about that!

However it is now right up there with the best games of the year, even with its flaws.

Straight away the graphics are very impressive, playing at high resolution (1440p) and on ultra, this game looks better than almost anything I have played before. The environments you will explore are vast, detailed, varied and believable.
On the technical side of things, this is a complete and finished game. It does not feel like it was rushed at the last minute to meet deadlines and has very few bugs considering the scope of the game.
The game appears to be very well optimized with a wide variety of graphical options and has no major performance concerns, however you should be aware that this does not mean it will be well suited to low end systems - good optimization is meant in the context of the game being graphically impressive and performing well with suitably powerful hardware.

On the gameplay side of things. you take a party of 4 that can be chosen from a pool of several characters you meet throughout the game, it is almost an exact copy of the mechanics used previously in the Mass Effect games. Combat uses a standard mmo type hotbar system for abilities and spells and of course weapon, armor and abilities can all be changed around and upgraded.
The bulk of the content aside from the slightly disjointed and confusing (but enjoyable) story revolves around traditional mmo style sidequests and main mission structures - do one mission and find another along the way that leads to somewhere else. It is nothing that has not been done before and combat is not particularly deep. Luckily variety, locations and story keep things interesting throughout the extensive length of the game.
No element on it's own is groundbreaking, but everything is put together as a cohesive package and is well polished to ensure that the overall experience is one you will want to keep playing until the end.

Despite the above, there are some aspects of the game design that I feel could have been done better.
Character and equipment management is slow, fiddly and unintuitive, especially when it comes to managing multiple party members and trying to make an optimum build as there is no easy way to compare who has what stats and equipment across your entire range of selectable characters.
Some aspects of gameplay are not well explained and can cause confusion early on in the game such as the power and perks systems, equipment/armor upgrade systems and the way you send scouts out.

I also found the mouse and keyboard controls took some getting used to - they are similar in style to a standard 3rd person mmo but for the first few hours of gameplay I had issues trying to move the camera efficiently during combat. It would often spin around to face me away from enemies or have targeting issues, however after rebinding a few controls (specifically reversing the look/attack mouse buttons, and ensuring the camera follows the terrain elevation) it gradually became a non-issue but I did reach a point about an hour in where I was almost ready to quit in anger.

Overall: Technically proficient, beautiful graphics, decent story, enjoyable combat, poor character management.

In 5 min you are the bada$$ of the self proclaimed inquisition and you close rifts waving your hands without any explanation at all and thats it. Besides, the tactical camera is so bad implemented in the PC version that you see right away that this game was made for consoles and not PC. After a while, finally understanding that the Dragon Age of old is dead and that this game tries to play exactly like the last 2 Mass Effects (2 and 3), I started to have fun with it. The whole inquisition/inquisitor premise did not convince me at all but some of the followers storyline are pretty fun....it really feels like a medieval Mass Effect 2 (more action oriented, main quest really simple, some characters storyline pretty epic, but in this case they are not THAT epic). The main character, regardless of what you choose, is pretty bland but cassandra, blackwall and others are pretty decent ones. The most fun are the dragons fights, that gets pretty damn epic, but tactical camera, mindless AI and pathfinding problems do frustrate in those fights. There is too much fetch quests and sometimes you will get overwhelmed by boring stuff to do (just think about a single player MMO) but most of the time its ok. Play it as an action game and you will have some fun. Still, way behind the epic and strategic feel of DA:O. Expand

Buggy. My girlfriend and I both tried starting new games and about 2 hours in, the game froze up and had lots of bugs. Besides that, I didn't like switching to different party members and using time based tactics. It was too simple in the wrong ways and too complicated in other wrong ways for my taste. I got rid of this game.

I am an old DA:Origins player and after much hesitation decided to give this game a shot despite its poor critics. After 1h of playing some simple questions come into my mind. We're on late 2014, technology has greatly evolved, developers have very strong tools on their hands that 10 years ago wouldn't dream of. Right? How come they can't design a decent inventory???

Tell me, why do I have to navigate between dozens of windows to change a bloody armor? And why the hell are inventory icons so big? What are we, blind? Even on the old days when graphics were crap, inventories were designed to be practical and to offer a good overview of all your items, characters, skills etc. In DA:I its the complete opposite. You don't have any overview at all.

Another thing that bothered me right from the beginning is the overall control/camera/fighting system of the game. I don't know where to start, its like the developers decided in secret to mess with their old fans. The tactical camera is only "tactical" by name because you can't see almost anything.

No matter how much you zoom out the camera is fixed very close to the team leader and in order to see whats around you you're obliged to change the view into 3rd person!! Now imagine how confusing this can be in the middle of a battle. This poor implemented system results in many headaches making it rather impossible to create tactics and enjoy the game. You just attack the bad guy and watch out whether anyone from the party is low on health to heal him. That's the whole "strategy" of the game, poor and primitive.

And here comes the next question. Why didn't they use the same tactical camera of DA:O which was almost perfect? Was it hard to implement? Why cant we PC users enjoy and take advantage of the keyboard+mouse combination, haven't we payed for the PC version of the game after all?? For heaven's sake I don't want to use an xbox controller for a game that should meant to be played with keyboard and mouse! I wont take it any further and speak for other flaws for the ones I mentioned are enough to spoil my experience...

After this abomination of a game at best, I will turn my back on this company and never buy any of their filthy products again. Only pirate them, because that's what they truly deserve.

I find it difficult to take the game seriously when my war counsel consists of a bunch of 20 yr old chicks and when a guard captain is a dwarven(?) girl who looks like she's in her early teens. I am all for more female protagonists but turning women into men by giving them swords, dressing them in heavy armor, and making sure their over-masculine behavior contrasts well next to a bunch of weak male characters is beyond stupid. What happened to all the nice women anyway? DAI doesn't have any. But if you like butch/dominatrix girls who 'don' need a man', then this game is for you.

First, the repetitive side quests, i don't want to spend three hours looking for random crap and running around the (sometimes) unfortunately large world as a side quest.
Secondly, the crashing, this just drove me insane, thankful the oh so frequent auto saves saved my ass, so no real harm done, just really annoying.
Thirdly, the controls, targeting issues were a pain, but overall little more than that, the camera angles were a bit broken, but nothing that broke the game.
Despite the flaws this really is a fun game the story is very compelling and i found myself enjoying it immensely, regardless of its flaws. Overall it is a good game and a great experience and for anyone who loved the first game and tolerated the second, it a must play.

Instead, it just added fuel to the fire.

Furthermore, the characters in said cutscenes were very poorly animated, which made it even more difficult to immerse in the already lackluster story. Characters are very difficult to control due to bad camera work, thus rendering the combat part nearly impossible for me to enjoy. To cap it all off, the tactical screen was very confusing and not well-done.

In conclusion, an unbelievable disappointment and a disgrace to the BioWare franchise. If there is any possibility you can avoid this game, save yourself the time and money and do so.

How the mighty have fallen. This game looks like they either intended to turn this farce into an MMO initially and decided it was too poor to survive long after conception, or that they felt they could make an immersive game such as skyrim, or fallout, and forgot about the immersive part.

The very few semi-positive points...its big but unwieldly so. Its pretty.

The only thing more disappointing than the game is all the butt-kiss "professional" game critics and reviews kissing up to it because its in their best interests to do so.

The controls are just horrible. Simply could not play over an hour. I payed 60 euro for this and now can not play it properly. Why in hell was this changed completely to annoy the players of DAO and DA2. This was really a horrible mistake, which I can not undo anymore.

What is shocking and shows how the industry is and each others pockets is the lack reports of this in the mainstream reviews with reflecting scores, and yes Im looking at you Giant bomb and IGN you should be ashamed.
