This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Diablo IV - walking simulator on rails.

Starts off with pay to win 30€ early access and a non-ssf HC "race" dominated by group play spam-resetting the same dungeon over and over.

Boring itemization and barebones skill-twig ("tree") with minimal effective choice.
The monster killing portion of the gameplay is good, everything else is not.

Every town is deliberately horribly ineffective in terms of crafting / storing stuff, requiring one to walk back and forth for a minute or two depending on the use case, of course the horse isn't allowed to gallop inside and near towns.

The endgame is weaker than path of exile was literally 10 years ago. Nightmare Dungeons require a 1-2 minute walk every time, incentivizing preparing a set of identical dungeons, so that you don't have to walk there every time. Each "unique" dungeon has always the same boring objectives and boss (if there even is one) and requires backtracking, sometimes requiring players to backtrack for multiple minutes per dungeon. To top it off, there's only 22 dungeons that can be nightmare dungeons, despite there being 100+ in the game.

The level-scaling is absolutely mind-boggling. Zones that are lower level than you will downscale your character, meaning you technically get weaker per level in low-level zones, similarly, monsters that are higher level than you gain damage reduction and deal more damage to you.

The "trade system" is ridiculous. Any item that's legendary or unique cannot be traded. Any item that's been upgraded by the black smith cannot be traded. In other words, any item that you use becomes account bound and can at best be reused by another of your characters. This also means that most* account bound item upgrades make the prior item absolutely worthless.
Furthermore, the level requirement of items is at least as high as your current level, this means you could find a rare item (that would normally only require level 60 to equip that would be useful to your friend or another character of yours), BUT they'll need to reach your level, so even if you happen to find something useful for another character (which is rare to begin with thanks to "smart loot"), you can't use it anyway unless that other character is on a similar level.

Hardcore is kind of a joke. There is cheat death elixirs farmable for everyone and a cheat death mechanic for sorcerer, in combination with the scroll of escape. This means that for example the pinnacle level 100 boss can be killed with zero risk of death.

Last but not least is stash space and console-port. The entire UI is obviously designed for consoles and doesn't feel or look good on pc, for example, one cannot search in the stash or on the skill/paragon tree (except for predefined terms LOL). You start off with one stash tab (10x5), every item takes up one stash slot (gems and elixirs are stackable) and can have up to 4 stash tabs. Those 4 tabs fill up very quickly with even one character.

This is of course is an incomplete list of current issues.

There have been several threads on the official forums of battle net as well.

Diablo 4 was released as a fully finished product. For now this feels like a beta version and I feel hugely disappointed.
The playerbase did not receive what Blizzard was advertising in the first place.

This game released as not finished. And still looks like a mobile game. No end game. Short campaign. Just so average. Itemization is bad. Whole game is just very boring and not hooking you.

Zoom is nonsense. Everything is zoomed a lot. And it kill the atmosphere.

Also level scaling is very bad. You don't feel any progression on your character.

For Barbarian they were designed to have a hard time leveling up and a golden time in the endgame.
Now the Barbs are having a hard time leveling up and a hard time dreaming about the endgame.

Dont waste your time with this title !
They are nerfing each and every build that is able to do end game content.
I bet the next step will be to make something available in the shop so that you can buy the necessary power to be able to do the end game activities.

If you do invest your time now you will then be commited. Just dont do it !!!

World events are ok, just lacks variety, gets boring quick or the voice lines makes no sense. (ghost complaining along the lines got lost in the woods, but the event is happening in a damn desert with no tree in sight).
3 world bosses only and one only every 6ish hours kind of sucks as you normally can only do 1 a day with the spawn times being so far apart.

    Gameplay
Feels fine on the most part but there is this horrible issue where the character completely misses the target or fires the skill at another enemy, this has caused me a lot of deaths as something I need to kill gets ignored. if this is fixed perhaps I will give +1 to rating.
Skill tree is meh compared to Diablo 3. The builds in Diablo 3 could vary so much and I loved it for it.
Skills were completely changed in some cases by a click of a button, now you have to pay to change it? Why? There is no point to it. In Diablo 4 it is 2 options for a skill on what it does differently, and most of the times it is very minor changes.

    Performance
Game is smooth once everything is loaded in, before that good luck with rubber banding after you return to town or back to where you just were. They are trying to make it seems like they have these amazing short loading times between areas but stuff are not loaded in yet. I would rather wait the extra 5-10s and have a smooth experience than what ever this garbage is.

    General stuff
For some reason this online game again, no point though as you mostly play alone or with some friends at most. The open world MMO experience is just bad, you see a person do things but you never communicate, there is no point to it. Elden Ring's system had more interaction and those were some word on the floor.
4 stash tabs, that is it, they are also small so good luck storing all your items and all the potions and all the legendary aspects. Per character.
Also gems worth 4 gold? and a white item more than that? feels like they just assigned some random value and forgot to change it back.
rerolling item stats are stupidly expensive, starts at 20kish and next roll it is already 100K+, their balance team are clearly bad.
Reroll a character skills costs 150k where I am at.
Some endgame content is unbalanced or not rewarding enough for the effort you need to put in.
Loot drops are unrefined and just plain bad atm.
World lvl 50 is where you start T3 on avg and endgame starts and items lvl 50+ have better stat rolls on them. You do the world boss and it drops lvl 44 legendaries which is garbage since you are 50+ on T3 and your yellow items are better than they are. This also happened turning in the tree of whispers' and getting rewarded with subpar items.
There are still bugs in their dungeons' progression as multiple times I got stuck not able to progress in the dungeon and had to restart it.
Also be prepared for unexpected server restarts as they do not have any warning in place, so enjoy redoing the stronghold or dungeons.

Shop is trash, prices are insane and it should be criminal to charge so much for stuff after charging a ridiculous amount for the base game in the first place.
There are some cosmetics for the horse dropping, but very rare, got like 2 in about 70ish hours of playing.

Releasing the game on a Tuesday and 4 days early access by paying more is just scum, honestly.

    TLDR
Activision Blizzard is being greedy once again, the game is average at best currently and not worth the price. Plenty of bugs and boring skill system makes me not want to continue playing for much longer. Should have been an offline game, as it is a bad attempt of an online game.

    Update:
S1 patch notes just dropped and time to nerf the scores just like all the classes in the game. -2 to Score
    Update 2:
Just tried to play the season and loading simulator season 1, uninstalling. -2
    Update 3
Baldur's Gate 3 is awesome, don't think I will ever reinstall Diablo 4, BG3 is how a game is supposed to be made.

The game is great in terms of campaign story, music, environments. However, Blizzard is known to take the "fun" away silently (eg. see the new constant nerfs).

It took them 1 week and instead of making the game a bit more fun, it's now very shallow. Not to mention all the other bad design decisions (rewards, quests, inexistent open world, etc).

The story had potential, but honestly feels very watered down and lacking in all the lore it should have. It makes you ask questions then doesn't answer them.

Enemy Scaling and open world is a really bad choice. You level and get weaker as enemies get stronger and your gear and abilities get weaker in comparison. Loot is pretty meh, you can only go up to world tier 2 in the story but you can hit the Soft level cap of 50 anywhere and if you hit that, the game grinds to a progression halt. WT2 will rarely ever gives you gear over 40 despite fighting enemies 50+, so if you go through an area and do all you can while you're there it becomes pointless. Quest rewards are good for selling or breaking. Legendary stuff ends up 5 levels lower than the level of normal drops so you can kill a level 50 enemy, it can drop a level 40 yellow and a level 35 legendary in my experience. You can only go above world tier 2 after you complete the game, which implies it better to rush the story to actually make doing the side stuff worth while. But then you realise that post game is just a boring grind. A terrible variety of monsters, mobs and dungeons. It all feels very gloomy and copy and paste. The bosses in dungeons barely drop anything and you have about 7 bosses in total for around 100 dungeons, so it gets stale really fast.

Most of the good looking gear that should be in game, is behind a pay wall, Streamer event or even an Amazon Prime add on. Do you need it? No, but if I've just paid 60quid for a game, I would like there to actually be in game content that looks good and not the other 50% of cosmetics being behind pay walls or to the benefit of streamers. You could call it FOMO, you can also call it greed.

Post game gets even worse though. After you enter World Tier 3 it then adds "sacred" loot. Basically upto level 50 is character building directly, after that is a paragon point grind for maximising stats. So at level 65, normal guy will drop and it will be around lvl45, sacred gear can also drop which should be at your lvl, being 65. Thing is, that is not guaranteed, neither are legendaries being at your level and I have had Sacred unique legendaries drop 7 levels higher than my current gear and be WORSE! so the grind gets even harder and less worth it a good 7/10 times.

The game is so scared of being anything colourful or whacky like Diablo 3 was, which for the record I loved, it is just grey, dark, gloomy and miserable. It lacks character and soul, it's like some edgelord teenager trying to be as grim as possible.

Then comes the online only aspect, so when they screw things up which they have several times already, you can't play. Then there's the season pass, which is a paywall for more content every 3 months, in which you have to do all the aforementioned grinding on a new character to be rewarded cosmetics they they could just add into the loot pool.

Absolute farse and a robbery. The hype this game has is because it is a Diablo game with die hard fans and likely paid reviews.

Many official reviews are based on first impressions or story playthroughs. ARPGs, however, have to be evaluated differently, and similarly to MMORPGs, should be based on reviews-in-progress or delayed by a months based on endgame experience.

Blizzard missed the mark with their third installment and didn't bring the genre forward like it did previously. They had years to learn from successful competitors like Grinding Gear Games' Path of Exile. So, there was much hope that part IV will do much better. However, it appears that Blizzard, again, has to go back to the drawing board because many design decisions made do hamper the long-term replayability and question whether anything has been understood about the genre they once championed. This is fatal for a live service game.

As said, the story itself isn't what should be talked about, rather whether the game provides a satisfying endgame loop. This is where they're outright falling flat. This is just a summarization of issues (by the time of writing, some changes may be made later and already have been announced):

    — the most effective way to level to 100 is grinding nightmare dungeons. This is highly repetitive by nature, but even more so if there's a cap on XP buffs, but you will still run at least 6–8 times until the next level. Thereafter, yes, nightmare dungeons are still the way to go. There is no variation to this formula. It's all there is.
    — you will eventually feel like a trash panda, given that the game fails to provide any form of loot filtering. At least they did away with having to identify items.
    — gems are dropped plenty but thanks to their reusability there is no need to keep them unless you want to stuff your limited inventory with them
    — inventory space is overall abysmally small, worse even, some inventory is intentionally limited, there is no search function, and if you thought that gems shouldn't take up as much space as an axe then you are out of luck. Blizzard has always been stingy with inventory space, but this isn't acceptable in a modern ARPG anymore.
    — some stats like resistances don't either work at all or poorly. Other stats are overpowered to the level of necessitating to build your character around it, this is due to a stat bucket system where certain stats share the same stat domain while others have their own. Given that stats are the mechanical core of any ARPG it is very puzzling to see a developer like Blizzard stumbling over such basic issues.
    — given how the stat system works, it should be no surprise that there is immense stat bloat, with lesser versions of the same stat class occupying the same space. Currently, there are about 576 stats to roll from. With only a maximum of four available per item, an eternal grind for the perfect roll is ensured. Until then, you will either end up as a gold billionaire or as a walking warehouse of crafting materials.
    — the game likes to waste your time: from the aforementioned lacking loot filter system, over meandering dungeons even requiring backtracking to events requiring you to listen to a prologue of lengthy dialogues of NPCs, and many more things, it has it all.
    — at the time of writing, the first season is running and exposing some serious design lack of conceptual proofs during development. A design that requires you to run up to boring dungeons to chase an item that not only provides borrowed power, a concept that Blizzard has stumbled over many times. It also floods your regular inventory space with items that are season-limited, and cannot be praised at all. There is no added depth and feels uninspired overall.

A part of general criticism is also the world. Previously, Blizzard stuck to a zone-based design, this time they went for a world-based design, where players have to unlock some settlements, do quests, kill world bosses, participate in various events like Helltides or PVP. But it seems that with every change Blizzard makes, the world becomes irrelevant. This appears to be symptomatic for Blizzard: they are certainly capable of crafting beautiful worlds, but they are torpedoing their value by committing players to forced claustrophobia to have any meaningful character progression.

Another issue is camera zoom, which can lead to instant character deaths due to monsters engaging you from off-screen, like skeletal artillery or turbocharging monsters.

So, is there anything good? Yes. The story is certainly more mature and gritty than in the previous installment. The game runs smoothly in many configurations, the foundation is there, but the interior is lacking. Overall, this means however that as an actual ARPG it is a rather mediocre experience.

Majority of the current issues with D4 seem to be related with this 'cut' content, including: search and number of tabs in stash, another tier of gems, and another difficulty level.

Instead of including content Blizzard seems to prefer going down the 'let's slow the game down' approach which is not the most fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a hard recommend for the game. The classes feel weak until you hit lvl 50 and you will probably want to play the same sorcerer or rogue classes everyone picks because they're the 2 cool classes everyone say how good they are for early and endgame. The story took about 16 hours to complete but about 2 hours of it was actually good content, act 1 to 3 is forgettable, nothing splendid apart from the 3 headed dog boss, the only interesting mechanic it had was running away to a different zone every chunk of health it lost. After act 3, pathetic story telling and dramatic tropes that weren't necessary at all, like that girl, yes lemme open that door thats simply locked and that we could easily bust open with our power, oh-no she got stabbed in the hand or arm wtv by a drowned or wtv its called, gotta cut the arm off so that the "poison" doesn't spread. Many more uninteresting and useless action taken by her or other NPCs. Like c'mon, who's really gonna do that / say that.

One thing I absolutely hated about the game, the networking. Making the game an online only experience is the worst decision. I live in Australia and the internet access here isn't that great. Even playing solo I suffer from rubber-banding and attacks hitting me even if I'm not in an AOE zone. Anyways, most of the game, unless you have friends, is going to be played SOLO. MSQ or dungeons alike will be played SOLO. Lagging in a SOLO instanced dungeon left me dumbfounded.

no crafting apart from potions, vendors sell their items way too high (about 85% of my gold for 1 piece of gear which offers barely any upgrade over my current one and I could easily find an even better drop from a chest or an enemy)

Poor optimization from the game, me and my friends, who have beefy PCs, suffer from freezes, disconnections, crashes, broken cutscenes ( shows the floor, had to stream the cutscene on discord ) and visual physics glitches ( fresh out of gary's mod )

I could understand giving the mounts after act 3 as it makes you explore the map. but act 3 ends in a low level zone and you visited about maybe 35% of the whole map. (Again elongating the game, long but thin in substance)

Final zone, I somewhat liked it. HELL was beautifully made and pretty challenging. Ok twists from Lilith and cutscenes are fabulous. The cheap part is the nightmare zone, simply recycling old bosses we fought but weaker was kind of disappointing.

Tldr : dont waste 100$ aud (70$ usd) for this **** just play diablo 3 which is a much more enjoyable experience altogether.

Contrived builds which leave little to the users imagination with a very simplified tree and paragon points that simply just add raw power. Itemization is unimaginative as they are simply just skill sticks based around item power. All builds revolve around a "basic" skill that generates resources for your "Core" skills. It's very dumbed down. Once you reach around level 80-84 you start to notice the grind for the next level breakpoint. It's all just a matter of finding the right combination of +% damage and attributes that are meta for your character.
Overall, a very mid ARPG and will be soon forgotten and only played as a game in between seasons of PoE2, Last Epoch and D2R.

Two reasons: if you are going to have an always online game, you need stable servers. I'm not just talking about the problems around launch when the servers are getting slammed. It has been a couple of weeks now and the servers are still laggy and occaisionally crash. This is making it hard to enjoy the game.

The other reason is the bizarre zoomed in feel of the game. It feels like I'm looking at it through a telescope. I keep constantly trying to scroll my mouse wheel to zoom out. Enemies attack you from off screen and the range of your own abilities is often off screen. I can't fathom why they have done this, maybe performance on consoles? However these two issues combined are seriously affecting my enjoyment of the game, which is a huge shame as there is a lot to love on the gameplay side.

"World of Diablocraft Online" that's how it feels and plays. This is not a true Diablo. They took Diablo lore and slapped it on a MMO pretending to be an ARPG. I got my wife into D3 a few years ago and she liked it alot, we were able to run the same classes and share any loot that dropped while we were both present... not anymore. Can't trade any legendary for any reason. So us sharing any drops that the other may need cannot be done. She tried D4 and can't stand it, and I don't blame her.

Here are some cons that is what I'm basing my rating on:

    - Monetization (Extremely over priced cosmetics and scam season passes)
    - Bosses aren't hard, just very long time consuming damage sponges
    - Way too many MMO aspects for a true Diablo game
    - Level scaling
    - Lack of build diversity that's actually worth playing
    - No single player option at all. Forced to be in a world with other players.
    - Repetitive bosses/dungeons
    - Serious balance issues
    - Lack of legendary diversity
    - Horses are needed to travel on an unnecessarily huge obstacle course map with literal monster road blocks
    - No map overlay

    - decent visuals (not as good for a 2023 AAA title though);

    - amusing boss-fight mechanics;
    CONS:
    - drop and difficulty adaptation to your character;
    - no character stats system;
    - linear corridor-ish levels;
    - no character development strategy is needed: you can redistribute skills anytime/anywhere;
    - freemium games-like primitive quests - kill 20 bats, collect 10 rat tails etc;
    - no differences between classes except necromancer;
    - replaced an old-school cell-based inventory with a mainstream casual item-based one;
    - world adaptation is so absurd that every player on a level sees mobs level different (your character level + 2);
    - mostly the only difference between mob types is just how they look. Variety is fake;

    What I like:
Graphics, art style some of the characters

    What is avarage:
    Combat, classes,

    What I disliked:
Monster scaling - often, you get punished by leveling up with stronger monsters and the gain from leveling itself is not enough to offset this

Story ending - I was pretty fine with the story until the last act. On one hand it is cool and has cool story moments, but the ending is so poorly written that it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Unexplained mechanics - I kept building my class around lucky chance. Only when I invested all I had into it, I found out, that the mechanic works entirely different and is much much weaker than I thought.

Build switching - the more you progress with the game, the more you are locked in to your build. In order to survive and kill the monster you need more and more specific stats and legendary aspects. You have to collect all the needed items to switch your build, otherwise you have no chance

Items - later on, you very rarely drop an item that is an actual upgrade

I've spent more time playing Diablo games than any other game. Diablo 4 is the most expensive game I've ever bought by a pretty fair margin. I had high hopes for it, thinking they may have learned from their mistakes with 3. Unfortunately Diablo 4 is a disappointment. So many choices they made in gameplay aspects just make little sense to me. The performance of the game is all over the place. The game runs at a pretty solid 144 fps, but yet the cutscenes are choppy and laggy? Really?

The game, over all, is "okay". If this was some standalone new franchise that would be fine, but I was expecting more than just "Okay" from Blizzard. I'm disappointed they kept the D3 style combat system and I'm not a huge fan of skill tree. I really wish they would have gone a different direction with the itemization in the game too, maybe taken a hint from how popular D2R was? Guess not...

I have complaints about other game mechanics and choices, but I could have looked past pretty much all of it if the story was amazing like I've come to expect from Diablo. Unfortunately it just isn't. In fact, it's probably the worst part of the game. The story, in my opinion, is garbage. Unacceptably weak and flat for a Diablo game. Even with all the issues I had with D3 when it launched, at least it had a good story. I've seen lots of people praise D4's story, and it's absurd. D4 makes a mockery of the story, and characters, that has been built up over the previous 3 games. It just throws all the previous lore away, hand waves, or just downright ignores so many things to try make and this joke of a plot make any semblance of sense at all.

ALL the mechanic and gameplay issues could pretty easily be fixed, and honestly might be, but the story? I doubt they're going to change that... It seems very obvious to me that they really didn't care much at all about the game past it being one more thing to make a few $$. In the past, Blizzard was probably one of my most enjoyed game studios, but now I'm not sure I'll ever bother buying something from them again. I'm still playing the game, hoping that I'll find SOMETHING there to make the cost worth it, but I definitely regret paying the price to play this.

    Drawbacks are:
-Story is boring as hell, but honestly I didn't expect something else.
-Balancing. The disparity between different Skills and builds is huge. Which makes variety (@higher difficulties) very limited...
-Server. I don't know who had this Idea. The Servers are terrible. Sometimes you need a lot of Time just to log into the game, at prime times the game can be laggy as hell. It's 2023 ffs.
-Missing Quality of Life features. Again it's 2023 and you have a small inventory, no extra bag for gems etc etc...
-Microtransactions... still hate them in full price games
-Artificial extend the playtime. For example, finding all Lilith Statues. Does anybody think that it is fun to run around the world and click statues? Or doing all the Side Quest to get renown? Who ever develop this game, never played a ARPG itself.

If I could go back in time, I would not buy it again. It's not exactly bad, just feel non point.

Combat & gear: Feels good at first, but you constantly hit "walls" in your progression due to monster scaling. They've traded the advantage of partying with anyone at any level (which I appreciate) in exchange for 99% of the game's feeling of power.

Me, Lv. 20, fighting my way through a dungeon. Hold on a moment. Why does it take me 8 seconds of tirelessly attacking a regular skeleton to kill it? I played for hours, I was decked out in all rare gear pieces, yet I was WEAKER than on Lv. 1.

The thing that is holding you back constantly is the level scaling. I could unequip all of my gear pieces and deal just as much damage. Why? Because they only serve defensive purpose. At least most of them do. This shows that the game is heavily centered around legendary powers. But that's not the whole picture. You can mitigate and break through these barriers by blindly equipping the strongest 2 hander weapon that has the highest green number next to it. If you continuously do that, you will not struggle. Forget about damage multipliers, affixes, extra skill levels. They all pale in comparison to raw base damage. Putting together all of your multipliers is something you should only do once you reach the highest world tier when there are no more replacements to get. Of course, this is both a good and a bad thing. The positive is that casual players can easily progress with zero knowledge. The bad is that you get no sense of customization or solving a character-specific problem.

This shows the fundamental flaw with D4, namely that your power fantasy goes down the drain with how the game is composed. Aren't ARPGs all about feeling like a God and mowing down hordes of enemies in the blink of an eye? I thought they were, but it's clear that they went with the slow and tactical approach, which again, isn't inherently bad.

Tiny affixes on gear, problem solving not possible. What are you going to do with 3% resource cost reduction on your gear piece? Your spells cost 1.3 less mana. Invest some more through paragon and another gear piece, you may reach 10%. It seems like they were incredibly greedy with bonuses to make your character feel unique. Usually resource is a problem to be solved in ARPGs. Mana leech, mana on hit, decent CDR, decent RCR, ABSENT here.

Build diversity: non-existent. Every class has only 2-3 viable specs. Incredibly boring. Off-meta builds are not rewarded or straight up not possible due to how tiny the base damage is on the skill tree.

Skills: They played it too safe and brought back everything that we've seen in D2/3. Where is the innovation? Where is the FUN? Where is the craziness? Barb has stab, smash, charge, leap, shouts. Yawn. Where are the skills where he grabs an enemy, rips him in two, applies bleed damage, and tosses the corpse into a heap of enemies? Where is the INNOVATION? Only about 10% of all available skills have some sort of fun or feels good element to them. That's not acceptable.

NERFS? Why are they so obsessed with balance in a PVE game? They have only rolled out nerfs since the beta and some minor buffs for clearly underpowered classes. They did not specify why it's so important to keep players weak within their patch notes. The only ones who will suffer from this are beginners.

Towns: Layouts are horrid. Things are spaced out so far apart. How did this make it to live? It's okay if you do it once, or ten times, even a hundred times. But if you walk from stash to smith to occultist 500 times and it takes you 5 minutes to recycle your inventory, you'll get furious eventually.

UI: Pretty bad. My biggest gripe is how cluttered the gear comparison is with advanced tooltips. Again, they just made it work. They didn't make it better, and even better still afterward. They set it and forget it. Pure baseline functionality is all you get.

Price: Too expensive for an alpha version. MTX too expensive for a $100 game.

Endgame activities are decent and have some variety. The weakest aspect are dungeons due to mission objectives. I just want to slay monsters, stop pointing me towards useless goals.

Too many load screens: 8 seconds to load into a 1-room cellar, way too much. You WILL notice this if you ever try to power farm a specific dungeon. Load to town, load into instance, load into dungeon, 1700 ms latency because region is overfilled. The backend is barely keeping it all together and it shows. Unfortunate. The cost of going MMOARPG.

Story is awful. Strong and courageous females at the frontlines, minority quotas, non-sensical acts. A little girl's fairy tale. A whole lot of trashy non-Diablo plastered on top of a good legacy.

    -itemization is very basic,
-multiple item stats are not working like you would expect(resists, damage buckets)
-aspect system is very limiting and often locks you from upgrading your gear with fresh drops. I think aspects should be separated from items, and be added to skill twig.
-boring and unrewarding endgame. I like grind to some degree, but in D4 it's just not worth it right now

Overall game is well done from technical standpoint, but rpg aspects of the game are really badly designed. Definitely not worth 70$ at the current state, maybe in the future, after multiple patches and game systems rework.

First act is great, then the game goes downhill fast. gets good again act 6. No sense of progression feels rewarding, enemy scaling punishes you for leveling up by matching you so you never feel strong. End game is a boring grind of the same few things to do over and over and over again. classes nerfed into the ground.

It feels like the designers who built the game and the designers who will adjust the game after launch are totally different groups of people. The game was full of fun at the beginning, but it didn't last long.
So who is the real Mr. AntiFun, Blizzard?

For a major company that took so much time...where is the innovation? Money prevails ts clear to me now... Sad repetitive gameplay...I have played this game hundreds of times in the last 20 years. To be honest it's still kinda addictive...but for how long? Let's see if the end game is worth something.

Another completely unsurprising Live Services failure. $100 game that you can't play, because there aren't enough servers, to play a single-player experience game.

Doesn't matter if you've made a great game if it can't be played.

Basically it was obvious that Blizzard wasn't going to take any risks with this game, every bit of info they'd dropped after the initial announcement screamed that they are going to make the same ugly decisions all over again. And it is basically what we got. It is the same vanilla pre-RoS D3 with the new graphics and the same systems they renamed and repacked to different containers. Same very casual, very clean, very controlable (by blizzard) way of playing the game with nothing of interest for your average player, let alone hardcore fans of the genre. Runes system is your "new" skill tree. Kanai cube is your new aspect thing. Your class-sets are paragon boards now. Same D3 1.0 skill system: generators, spenders. Your vanilla D3 inferno is the new world tier 4.

The story is retconned and is really nothing special despite really being darker.
The graphics are mostly mediocre by today's standarts. The game engine really lacks contrast and sharpness, the picture is just blend and gray. The art style is superb though. Designers, artist, modelers outdid themselvels once again. The cinametics are fire. The audio-design is good.
The monetisation and policies are pure cancer.
The endgame is non-existant. Same with the replayability.
The game is just boring. It doesn't demand any brain activity from you from second one. Eventually it will become D3, meaning every season you start from scratch following some easy guide from some dude, never required to make any decision for yourself. You just grab a list of items from the floor, do some obvious mumbo jumbo and you're done.
People will forget about D4 very very soon. There's just not enough stuff to experiment on there. And there's no signs that is about to change, on the contrary.

    Overall.
    As a single-player story game 710.
As an online multi-player service game 010.
Oh, and let's substract some points for the beyond good and evil greed behind the monetisation plan.
The final score is 110. And honestly I am being generous. Let's not forget I've been waiting for this game for 10 years. And that is what I've got.

The game is rather hard and tedious and you will find that you need to check the web for recommended character builds, as you can't just hoof it like in D3 when everything worked. In D4 if you don't have the right build, you will suffer as the tough mobs like elites and dungeon bosses won't just fall over to your DIY "fun build". Also at least for me personally, none of the recommended builds are fun. Like for example having to keep up shouts as Barbarian. This isn't the kind of game where that's a fun thing to do. Also there are no recommended archery builds, as all the Rogue builds are either melee or trap-focused builds.

The graphics are great, the story is great. The combat...not really, for the reasons I explained above. I enjoyed playing through the story and doing a whole bunch of side quests, but once I finished it, I just uninstalled it. Overall, I think I sunk about 60 hours into it during which I got to level 55, which justified the price, but I won't be picking it up again until the Paladin DLC.

I think the skill tree is a bit too reminiscent of PoE without nearly as many options. The simplification is good, but the skill development feels limited. Item stats are also somewhat confusing and unfamiliar while the crafting system feels unsatisfying and clunky. My last gripe is the visual design of the characters and objects. The color palette and dark atmosphere is fantastic, but the actual rendering of characters, monsters and objects feel lackluster (worse than D2R). I think the strongest suit is the variety in quests and the open world system, which makes the game feel more vast relative to previous titles. Expand

Honestly i think if anyone would care about the game they would place them at the end of each dungeon so at least there would be a reason to go through each dungeon. But at this point i guess none of you beated every dungeon. not even half of them. There is absolutly no reason to play 85% of the dungeons without sigils if you play just 1 character.

    About the mount...
I understand that riding in the openworld is for making each of the a**holes amazed by the visuals of the game. however. I found myself really annoyed after i had to ride 1-2 minutes (bonus: loading screen) to reach every sigil dungeon i want to finish. For a player who plays the game minimum for a year and if you play at least 10 dungeon a day we talking about 100 hour of pointless riding. This is where i miss the good old Diablo 3 option where you can go right from the town into your dungeon. Ofcourse not talking about the horse cooldowns and all the pointless blockades on the road boosting up your time in the pointless ride. Also the horse handling can be felt exactly it was never designed for PC but it works "SO ITS OKAY FOR THEM"

    Lagg issue...
Some people moaning about the game for being "FORCED ONLINE" and experiencing lagg issues.
ofcource these guys never understood and never will that how game engines works. This is not server issue. not internet connection issue. Lets call it a "game issue" since objects and terrain in a distance loading while you travelling and getting closer. A single player option doesn't going to solve your problems. You just can't deal with poorly optimalized early access games because that how i can call Diablo 4.

Overall the game is really good until you level up. And becomes boring super quick after the campaign end. Blizzard should understand that grinding dungeons is not an option to keep players busy with their game. I understand they have to make people spend much time as possible in the game because thats the profit. Its the same what Path of Exile does. but in Diablo its pain in the a** without content. Players need much more interesting things to do or they will go into the next game asap.

    Scaling...
The strenght of mobs on scale is insane. the higher your level, the weaker you are. i have leveled 3 characters up to 70 until i accepted that the characters are okay. but its the game f*cks you.

in my opinion Blizzard should figure out how to make the game enjoyable at max level because I dont even have a reason to level up for... What jobs to do when im above at least level 90? Just beating the sh*t out of higher level mobs? Even 3-5 player dungeons would fix this problems with world bosses on the end.

My biggest disappointment was the necromancer. I had big hopes about having an amazing skeleton army as body guards with MAXIMUM amplifier to cast. But in this game the minions are weak af. And you are their body guard. Their damage is low. their health is low. They don't give a sh*t about mobs until you ain't got attacked. And theres a legendary what gives increased damage to minions but only after they are alive for at least 10 sec. So literaly this legendary bonus is completely useless on Act end bosses with one hiting your minions. In dungeons you have to heal them with skeletal priest to keep them alive. while the big damage dealer is YOU with bone spear... Dealing more DPS than all your minions together.
    AND WHERE'S THE PALADIN???

On the current state of this early access game, spending days with it i can't give more than a 4 or 5
It needs another 4 years to be playable.

I've started with a rogue and played several evenings since release. Usually, I fell asleep within two hours of playing and woke up later in the night, sitting in front of my pc and being logged off the battle.net servers due to inactivity. Combat feels a bit stale and many fights, especially at the beginning, feel tedious. Side quests contain a lot of walking ("Meet me over there!") for no obvious story telling reason. What has happened in the target destination often could have happened at the starting place of the side quest without losing anything. The fights in between the quest destinations often feel like a chore, take long and often follow the same schematic.

A lot of what the game offers has been done before, either by Blizzard or by Path of Exile. So far, the game has offered truly little new to the genre. I haven't genuinely enjoyed Diablo 3, but fighting felt a lot more fluent there (after a few patches, of course).

Overall, Diablo 4 is not a bad game. I just haven't seen a lot that makes it extraordinary or stand out from other entries of the genre. So far, I have enjoyed myself as much as during Torchlight 1 and 2 - games which had no hype around them, were low-budget productions and a bit boring but mostly fun at the time of their release. Diablo 4 feels remarkably similar, despite having a lot more walking to do and offering a shared world, which trades the feeling of darkness and despair known from Diablo 2 for that of a monster-smashing theme park. It doesn't help the immersion.

Finally, this game is probably a 7 out of 10. But as a huge fan of the series, and someone who has played all the preceding games extensively, I've felt underwhelmed by this release. So, it's a 6 out of 10 because I still feel a bit bitter. Yet, I'd love to rewrite this review if the game has a long-term motivation. Who knows, maybe it'll draw you back into the world after two weeks of absence. Until that happens, I'm back to Path of Exile.

The art is competent and gives off the impression of talent, but remains one note and level in quality the whole way through. It never exceeds expectations or wows, but at least never looks bad.
The gameplay is functional but shallow, and never dares to let the player exceed carefully crafted boxes, which personally, when it comes to the ARPG genre, may as well be the prime sin an ARPG can commit. Player expression through gameplay is effectively non-existent beyond the $25 armor sets the store offers.
The most seething criticism I can offer falls upon the story, though. It often gestures to creative and interesting ideas, but they are never more than gestures and the true events mostly fall flat and fail to deliver, thanks to the utter predictability of it all. Though I was limited to the most boring act in the game during the beta periods, I called the ultimate result of the story from the moment I met Neyrelle. Some details I couldn't possibly predict, of course, but the broad strokes of the...twists...this game offers were there. The typical "genius" conceptual twists that hang so low on the tree of writing that the short arms of the typical LA writer are capable of reaching them. I was deeply unsatisfied with the sheer amount of time I was forced to play the campaign, for what ultimately felt like nothing more than the opening act of a story I wasn't told, thanks to the need for every game these days to be a lengthy, unfinished, live-service game. The campaign was overly stretched, filling some need to have every major segment of the map feature some story element, causing the already barebones story content to feel even worse. Three of the six acts effectively result in a "Welp, they aren't here!" moment, making them feel insanely repetitive until the latter half of the game. The conclusion left me waving my hands in bewildered gestures towards my screen, disbelieving that, that was 'it." That was the whole game.

Diablo IV is boring. Simple as that. Everything is carefully crafted to waste as much time as it possibly can, as the game has no other way of keeping you engaged. The story must last upwards of 20 hours, even though it hardly deserves the time. The endgame must have world tiers that change nothing beyond new arbitrary items types which are questionably "better"(?) than the previous item tier. Paragon power must be locked behind an arduous grind of repetitive, boring side content. Objectives must be as distantly spread apart as possible. Diablo IV is not only boring, but it is a waste of time, just barely disguised enough to seem like a game.

WTF, Blizz? I like the danger of being alone, isolated, and not running into Captain Fancypants on his shiny horse blasting everything around me while fighting mobs.

Back to the game in general, though, besides the cutscenes (always gorgeous), and the likely better graphics, I think someone could've modded D3 and basically made this. It's got so many re-used sounds, enemies, skills, etc. from past Diablos; and it does make some sense.

It would've been nice to make the dialogue be more affective towards the actual game instead of the static way it's always been. Throw a few choices in that get your boons or penalties from people based on how you respond, etc.

Small caveat: I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm already pretty bored and just rushing through it now to finish it up. I can't imagine getting this far and then suddenly the game becomes entirely different and redeems itself. It's fun like the old Diablo games were fun. In the grindy, re-hashed, re-skinned, regurgitated gameplay that I played over 20 years ago. Newcomers will probably like it a lot, but that's why Diablo was a hit in the first place.

Edit: Oh and I just got to the boss where a full 1/3 of the room was basically unusable because of a wall that blocks your isometric view. Wonderful planning, Blizz...

And now some demons are stuck behind an impassable hellfire barrier and I can't kill them, but I need to kill them to progress.

Update: So I finally beat the end boss, but I had to do it twice. Immediately after the last fight, I looted and got disconnected. Because of the change in the way quest saving works due to the always online bit, I had to do it all over again. I did not get two full loot drops.

I have no great desire to continue playing. I tried a Tree of Whispers run and got some useless yellows and started a new character. But nothing is really pulling me back, and I feel this will game go by the wayside in my library.

This is not the greatest bitterness (Hogwarts beats everything). But I'm still sad we got it. Moreover, the worst part is that D4 is a scam. Everything that the creators promised we got in the beta. This game looks like the creators did act 1 and then ignored it.

Story is good and bloody as possible. But fighting feels dull and the game is very much money oriented. Add all the network and game troubles that prevents you to play like every week or so and you've got an average game. Nothing really bad but nothing really great.

game feels like its still in development so I think is best to wait for now.
its not the a bad game, but wait for season 2 if you on the fence.

The game, which was already criticized for its slow pace, has been further bogged down by a series of nerfs that have affected every aspect of gameplay. All classes have been weakened, enchantment costs remain high, and the Helltides, a key feature of the game, have been slowed down. The patch has also severely nerfed boosting and reduced the experience bonus for killing higher-level monsters by a staggering 90%. The changes to critical and vulnerable damage, nerfed by 17% and 40% respectively, have further reduced the game's appeal. The game's pace, already a point of contention among players, has been slowed down to a slog, making progress feel tedious and unrewarding.

Adding insult to injury, even the teleportation mechanic, a seemingly minor aspect of the game, has been affected, with the channel time for the Leave Dungeon ability increased from 3 to 5 seconds. This change, while small, is emblematic of the overall direction of the patch - a focus on slowing down gameplay and reducing the effectiveness of various strategies and tactics. The result is a game that feels less like an epic battle against the forces of Hell and more like a chore. The excitement and anticipation that once surrounded Diablo 4 have been replaced with frustration and disappointment. The game, in its current state, fails to deliver on its promise, earning it a score of 0 out of 10.

The game feels NOTHING like Diablo 1 or 2. I played the campaign through five times and almost all the side quests twice, skipping the campaign only twice on the way to 50+ level characters, but I probably should have only played it once with a single character and stopped. The endgame seems pointless. I was having an easy time with a 71st level character, but leveling higher felt boring. There is NO story.

The campaign is OK but very dark. For example, you walk past almost as many human torture-victim corpses as the total enemies you encounter. On the other hand, I sort of liked that maybe 40% of the side-quests had sad endings - that seemed like a brave decision on the part of the developers.

It's quite difficult to find co-op partners, partly because there is so much to do specifically for one's own character, but mostly because Blizzard seemed to put almost no effort into matchmaking.

The Legion events where one joins a PUG to fight several consecutive hordes of enemies are fun, but the world bosses seem boring after you've completed a couple. The Hell-Tide events are OK; the first few are quite fun. Solo dungeons are repetitive.

There is a certain amount of satisfaction in slowly figuring out how to (relatively) quickly assess which of the endless stream of looted items are worth using, but that's the main problem with the game - it's 50% administration: picking up loot, sorting loot, salvaging loot, rolling to change one enhancement to a piece of loot, looking through your large bonus magic runes to decide which to add to a new piece of loot. All this is done, of course, at NPC's that are several seconds walk apart from each other. It pays off in power - I've heard of some people who died frequently, whereas I never had much trouble completing anything. Because I paused to pick the best loot and upgrade it correctly. But all in all, I would have preferred not to play a game that included so much administration. Solo or co-op, the game should be mostly fighting.

My first play through would probably rate a 7.5; my final experiences with the game were about a 3.

so the main reason for my lowish score is the most recent patch, i love this game and because of this love the developers need to learn the hard way what happens when they make bad decisions. my score will either go to a 0 or a 10 depending on how they handle what i think is the very critical campfire chat tomorrow

I hope they get the problems fixed in the next 2 seasons.

Cute if you've never played an arpg before and will actually take time to go through the campaign, but utterly useless to anyone that's played one before. PoE blows it out of the water and both Diablo 2 and 3 have better systems/progression/etc. Blizzard cares way more about microtransactions than making fun games these days.

Combat and dark world design are probably the biggest plus point D4 has but the boring end game grind, boring loot, boring leveling, boring enemys / bosses kills it somewhat for me. You have your build around lvl 25 ish and than run the same rotation on every mob pack to the end. Respecing make also no sense because my gear is optimised for on build... so it gets dull rather fast.

This is the fourth part of the series. Fourth. Made by the same company. Not the first. And how will they deal with the fact that the players reach endcontent too quickly, in the opinion of the producer? Patch 1.1 nerfed... just about everything. Now we will play longer :-D OMG!

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
