The game is god awful for the price. I won't drone on with all the same complaints others have had but they're right. Also this Reddit post gets it right. But look at all the Blizzard teat sucklers in there refusing to come to terms with how bad the game is. I downvoted this because blizzard seems intent on making getting to endgame the most horrible slog in history, actively hunting down legit tactics on youtube to nerf them the very next day.
This wouldn't be a problem if the other content wasn't so stale

Zero from me dawg, just to prove a point game looks nice, but season 1 just sucks so much ass cuz you have to create a whole new character just to get the new content.

Hate that the developers nerf dungeons to the ground. What about those who already benefited before it was nerfed? What about the casual players who dont have time to no life the game? Whoever directed the game was either depressed or missing in action. The game is now completely out of touch with the spirit of the Diablo franchise. I’m not sure if it can be fixed, they most likely missed the mark by so much that fans are already moving to other games. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, RIP Diablo. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. for context: I've over 6000 hours of time spent across various ARPGs including but not limited to:
D1, D2, D3, POE (since 2011), Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, Last Epoch, Wolcen..

    tl;dr
fans of good ARPG fans stay the hell away from this game for another 12-36 months, at its current pace of development (including the time since closed beta) the game needs multiple multiple years worth of development and getting reality checked by what ARPG enthusiasts want in terms of gameplay and game systems to be able enjoy it past a casual 30-60 hours

so far Activision King Blizzard has had:
20 years of experience & time to develop modern ARPGs
over 10 years of good examples like POE, Grim Dawn, Last Epoch etc. to draw inspiration from for game systems, customization, skill diversity, balancing, crafting systems, endgame systems
Billions of dollars earned by their CEO, carried on the backs of hard-working employees

and what did they deliver to you for an up to 3-digit € price tag?

    PROs:
    - 9/10 early game experience & campaign - ideal for your average casual dad gamer videogame "critic" to play through for 20-30 hours and come to the conclusion that "this game is a 90/100!!! so good!!" - mission accomplished
    - 9/10 visuals, never outstanding for an ARPG, art design is spot on, although the druid could have a more fitting fantasy "Ideal body" character look.
    - 8/10 audio, snappy and impactful sound design, skills feel weighty because of it, environment sounds are gear
    - 8/10 world & lore - despite being mostly not the old blizzard team anymore, it's still the Diablo universe with lots of references and very good world building
    - 5/10 soundtrack, honestly quite on the fence here
    - 5/10 potential - a solid mechanics engine foundation to build upon - hopefully this time it won't take 10 years like with D3 to make a playable ARPG that people enjoy coming back to every season for 40-100 hours
    - 5/10 pricing - pricey cash shop in a p2p game for 60-100€ in Europe - still fairly reasonable considering the many hours of gameplay you'll have over many seasons - but Bobby needs a new yacht for sure

    CONs:
    - 3/10 core class design - generator+spender patterns could work, but not if you need to use 3-5 generator attacks, for a spender that barely does 3-4x the damage of the generator, fails to kill elite monsters in one hit, and has a TINY aoe
why would you only have 6 ability slots? (see the UI design & input (click to select rather than hold), 10 total combat button keybinds, lack of choice and depth in talents)..
    - 2/10 endgame - if you're expercing over 50 hours of gameplay past the campaign, sorry, the game is far from that (playing just 1 class)
    - 1/10 honesty - lying in interviews about "more uniques and legenadries existing that players haven't seen before"
    - 3/10 progression & lvl scaling - leveling up makes you weaker past unlocking ilvl 725-815 item drops (which is around the level 45-60 mark)
the way the armor formula works has to be a joke, as you cannot upgrade your gear past a certain stage, while paragon points provide laughable "bonuses" of 5 attribute points on average, and rarely more than 5% damage (onto a pool of already 200-400% increases of the same kind, effectively 0.5-2%)
as you level up you tend to lose 5% mitigation, 5% damage and re-gain 1-2% damage/mitigation at best, making you not only slower to kill level-scaled enemies but also squishier
    - 1/10 "balance" - rather than buffing underused skills the devs will eventually nerf your build if it's remotely smooth to play, you will get caught in the crossfire of disabled uniques/legendary powers that were deemed exploitable -> losing 30-60% damage in the process and wonder why you got WEAKER over night as the devs try to frantically fix bugs while disabling core gameplay mechanics & ways to scale builds (affecting every player, instead of detecting the few exploiters with proper logging)

(IMO) what makes ARPGs "worth playing" - satisfying, interesting or straight up addictive:
-sense of progression = something to CHASE (levels, items, collectibles, unlocks, permanent power, etc)
-rewards for smart decisions (crafting, build making, farming routes)
-a well thought-out coherent game system "that makes sense", with reasonable combinations of gear/talents/abilities to optimize a character
-the ultimate POWER as a reward- achieving a "maxed out" build MUST be very rewarding and result in an extremely smooth, effortless and (borderline) overpowered performance after starting out weak & clunky - this is the main reward for your combined time, effort, thought and trial&error
-OPTIONS - all item/level/currency acquisition boils down to the same low level concept of "gaining options to change something" - be it the way your current character plays, the numerical/mechanical scaling leading to different potential for your build, or entirely new builds enabled by "the thing you JUST got that FINALLY allows you to do X..

If this game was to be rated by itself, on it's own merit, outside of the name of this franchise, or the studio behind it, it would be a 6/10. Mediocre, but scratches the arpg itch for a week or two and that's it. Unfortunately, there is a whole lot of parasites and baggage attached to it, that makes me hesitate to even give it a 3/10.

Mediocre, but scratches the arpg itch for a week or two and that's it. Unfortunately, there is a whole lot of parasites and baggage attached to it, that makes me hesitate to even give it a 3/10.

I will start with the company behind it. It's not the Blizzard that made Diablo 2, it's not the Blizzard that made WoW, one of the most impactful accomplishments in gaming history. No, it's a parasite that uses the name and goodwill of mislead "fans" that still support it to push for things, that I don't think belong in an escapist entertainment. I will attach the marketing to this as well, most of it was just brutally unfunny, but using Megan Fox in marketing is not just stupid, (no I have nothing aginst hot women that's not the point) but disturbing and downright creepy/should be criminal, considering what she does "outside". We live in times when this matters, and it should matter to Blizzard as well.

Now for the game. Part of a more than 25 years old franchise, and genre that now has some very strong competitors, compared to what Diablo 2 had to "fight against". This is absolutely pathetic. Not a single aspect of this game contains anything truly new, truly innovative, some might say that Blizzard was never really known for the innovations, much more for perfecting what already existed, but that's a pathetic excuse this game does not deserve. And for those that use the "it's just the initial release they will add it later they don't have the 15 years of added content PoE has", I would tell them to do things that would get deleted from this review. 10 years of development, absurd budget, (100s of millions and I am not even exaggerating) and the opportunity to look at what Path of Exile, Last Epoch or Grim Dawn did, copy it, and make it better with the insane resources studio like Blizzard can offer. They did absolutely none of that. Non-existent endgame, one boss that's basically a corpse rush until you make it. Season 0, and characters already hit for billions of damage. Boring, extremely boring stats that are just % increases. Why are there no class specific stats on items, why is everything just so uniform, every single class has damage to close enemies, reduced damage from distant enemies is that really what the combined brains of thousands of people that worked on this game were able to come up with? Critical chance and critical damage? Really? We haven't seen that ever before... This is not a sequel this is not a new game. It should have been. Stop making excuses for something created by this behemoth of a studio that gets dumpstered in content and creativity by a group of 20 people and a hamster. It's something that "works", which of course it does, it's geared towards a certain group of players and they will buy it. I absolutely don't care about graphics in games, so that's something I am not going to spend too much time on, and probably the reason why I am even going to give it a 3 and not 1/10. The game looks good, the cinematics look good. But everything underneath it is worthless. And that makes that nice coat of paint worthless as well. I am not going to talk about all the "problems" people have with leveling and grind being hard. Games should be hard...but also rewarding. With both gameplay and interesting loot. This offers none of that. Those supposedly infinite different builds are 3 builds (at best!) per class, that use the exact same skills, and pretty much the same, "most efficient", paragon board. Barbarian, for example, has 3 skill slots locked in, because everything else is trash, so everyone uses three shouts. Pinnacle of game design by one of the biggest developers in the industry. The story...exists? I guess? And I love Diablo books and lore. Nothing in this game made me interested in the characters or their journey...

And one last thing. Pricing. Premium priced game (yes 70 dollars is a premium end of discussion) has no right to have microtransactions in it. Absolutely none, I despise everyone that says that cosmetic only microtransactions are fine in games you pay full price for. I don't like them in f2p, but I am willing to stomach that, if the game is worth it. This is not the case, and it's disgusting. Then you have three battlepasses, there are for sure going to be paid dlcs, and the price of those cosmetics is exorbitant as well.

To finish this off. I do not recommend buying this game under any circumstances. I know that writing this review is worthless, and that people will do exactly that. This is Diablo 3 somehow downgraded sideways.

The tree(new bounty system) awful rewards in t4
Gambling with orbs seems worthless in t4, everyone avoids events
Helltide is an annoying chore maybe put the chest items into tree.
Nightmare dungeons are more tedious than anything. Im not going to use the ones with heavy minus to my builds damage or burning my rescource. Why are there all bonuses for elemental damage appearing when playing a physical class, makes the whole crafting part pointless.
Dungeons on a whole 75%+ have too low mobs. They keep nerfing the good ones

The game is fun to play for a bit but when you get to the end game it is awful.
    CONS:
Farming renoun, having to do the side quests and having to repick the way points again is stupid.
    On-death effects are stupid.
    Resistances don't work.
A lot of mechanics that are frustrating, not fun to play and unfair.
You can't scroll and you only see 5m around your character. I've died so many times from attacks that start offscreen that I can't even remember. Being killed by an attack that is off-screen is not fun at all.
Stash is limited to a few items and gets cluttered by gems and seasonal items.
The game could be a lot better and most of the stuff wrong with the game is easy to fix but they don't even try to mime that they are trying to fix it. (This is not really true, they seem to be trying to fix it, hopefully they will do it and I can enjoy the game better)
I've got my money's worth out of the game at about 50h played, fun enough in the beginning but everything goes to hell really fast after lvl 70-80 and becomes boring as hell and the problems with the game are ever more frustrating and not fun.
I play games to have fun and frustration is not fun. I've wasted about 15h now just to farm renown. I would actually prefer to have to do the campain again and the reward should be 100% renown by the end of the campain. This should be a choice. Forcing yourself to do side quests just to farm renown is simply retarded. I'm not sure who thought of this was a good idea but I pity the fool.

Update: I've decided to update my review and give it a 6/10. The game can still be fun if you don't take it too seriously and I've already gotten the $ back from it. I've played it about 120h now and I've enjoyed it most of the time.

The part where you travel the open world, meet someone and do some stuff, clear a dungeon and the depart is super cool IMO. The music is also 50/50 some locations, for me especially the desert ones have great music. Unfortunately some like the Kyovashad are total **** and it’s better to turn it off.

The issues are again… music in some locations. Character progression is not the best, it’s very limited and boring, gives no fun after level 40+.
The biggest issue for me is the main story/plot. It’s total **** and my 6yo daughter could write something better. I know it’s Diablo but the previous parts had at least a coherent story and background lore. This is a freaking dumpster fire, dull, rigged with some pro-feminism aspects and it’s hardly bearable.

The loot, the end game is also very weak and boring. With the recent changes the game is getting rely in reviews so I’m not gonna add anything here.

Diablo 4's decision to slow down the gameplay feels like a misguided attempt to inject realism into the experience. While I understand the developers' intentions, it has regrettably resulted in a lack of excitement and engagement. The once satisfying and fluid combat now feels clunky, sluggish, and devoid of the frenetic pace that made previous Diablo games so satisfying.

What made the previous Diablo titles special was their flawless inclusion of grinding mechanics, encouraging players to immerse themselves in repetitive battles in the pursuit of powerful loot. Diablo 4, however, seems to have undermined this integral aspect. The pacing is now so tedious that grinding becomes a monotonous chore rather than a satisfying endeavor. The joy of seeing your character grow stronger through countless encounters is sadly diminished due to the artificially imposed slowness.

Moreover, the game's overall rhythm suffers as a result. Diablo 4's slower-paced gameplay undermines the thrill of exploration and discovery. With less urgency and intensity, the environments lose their allure, becoming mundane and uninteresting. The lack of immediate and gratifying feedback from battles exacerbates this issue, leading to an unsatisfying player experience.

To be fair, Diablo 4 still possesses the franchise's trademark dark and atmospheric visuals, along with a compelling storyline that immerses players in a bleak and foreboding world. However, these redeeming qualities cannot overshadow the significant flaw of slowed-down gameplay, which ultimately eliminates the very enjoyment I sought in this new installment.

In conclusion, Diablo 4's decision to significantly slow down the gameplay is a baffling misstep. While attempts to add realism may have been well-intentioned, they have resulted in a tedious and unsatisfying experience. The absence of the once-enthralling grind dynamics and the lack of intensity and urgency in combat thwarts the overall enjoyment of the game. As a fan of the series, I sincerely hope that the developers reconsider their approach and find a way to recapture the fast-paced magic Diablo has been known for.

It plays and feels great. However everything else is quite weak.

They could not design a game where grind has a meaning, which is pretty much the whole premise of the game. Most worrying part is, most of the shortcomings of the game are so foundational that I doubt it can be fixed without deconstructing the game completely.

--- Loot: Dropping legendaries not exciting anymore. Too much loot drops left and right, just to salve and steal its aspect. Yellow items becomes legendary with imprinting aspects, which kills aaalll the fun of looting.

--- No trade: You can't trade anything of value in the game, which eliminates the Economy. It's such a bizarre choice in a grinding game that's always-online. What's the point of grind & loot if they are of no value?

--- Endgame content: After beating the story and skipping the campaign, your experience from lvl 0 to 100 never ever changes. There is no progressive content that unlocks at certain levels or item powers. All activities are same, only gets more difficult.

--- Lazy stats and build variety: It seems like there are too many stats, but most of them are gimmicky and only a few are so impactful (e.g vulnerable dmg). And build options in all classes are extremely dependant on a few very powerful skills that are must to use. E.g If a skill is applying vulnerable, no point in using any other skill as your main cast.

--- Lack of online interaction: There is no 4 people dungeons / raids that you can join via Matchmaking. They advertised the game as a very interactive, massive multiplayer experience. It's literally Diablo 3 with open world that scales to your level. There is not even a collective buff / reward or some interaction mechanic when doing an event with randoms on the same area. They could have done so many things with that idea.

--- Nothing new to the genre: There is ZERO innovation to the genre. There could be so much done with that skill tree. E.g You start with a base hero which then would branch out to different sub-classes etc. (Start with Sorc > Elemental Wizard / Witch / Dark Mage etc)

--- Bad mob design: Very few mobs in each encounter. Never fully satisfies you killing 7-10 mobs. You very rarely get a pack of mobs that are 20+ Almost everything explodes after death, or just immobilizes you, which seems like the only way to get you. Nothing creative and or fun.

--- UI UX: Whoever was responsible for this inventory and build management probably does not play games, let alone ARPGs. Nothing in the UI was made for scalability. The grind was not considered in designing this. There could be so much done as quick wins to improve this UI.

There's much more to list here but these are the most foundational and prominent faults of the game. It feels like the designers of the game do not play this type of game, because it neither caters to casual players (because of endless and meaningless grinding) nor the hardcore player base (due to lack of build variety, end-game contents having no extra rewards)

5 points for the story and fluidity. -5 for falsely advertising what it should be and it wasnt.

Blizzard, maybe you need more white males on the development team, otherwise your project is similar to that submarine case.

It seems to be there just to get salvaged and fuel the gear upgrading mechanic. The balance is worse than ever for a Diablo game. For each class there's only a few (sometimes only one) path to successfully do the harder content. I struggled with a sorcerer for a couple of weeks listening to my friends brag about how much damage their barbarian and their druid were doing. The rating given is mostly for protest, but the game itself isn't very good either. Looking at D4's initial and first seasonal content, even with a generous mindset, it is clear that it's not the game we were waiting for. Looking at D4's initial and first seasonal content, even with a generous mindset, it is clear that it's not the game we were waiting for. The points it scores on is the return to the bleak and desolate tone the series was built on, and the release wasn't a dumpster fire (is that even a point anyway?) but the gameplay itself suffers greatly.

Exploring the mechanics and story simultaneously was the interesting part of the game, yet putting a critical eye on the ARPG experience there was some glaring issues that was clearly brought up by the community the very first days. These issues only worsened after finishing the story at level 50, and got practically unbearable at approximately level 70. There isn't a sense of achievement or fun, since the game itself is easy but the mechanics thoroughly unfair.

D4 has ultimately not been designed for accessible experimentation and fun progression in mind, and constantly seen to demand from the player the typical "you have to suffer for 200 more hours before the fun starts". Off-screen attacks that kill you instantly. Constant stuns, freezes, fears etc. that combo into each other, removing the player's agency and ultimately killing you. Getting stuck on invisible terrain, and many other disappointing things. All the while the stash tabs completely fill up with unending, uninteresting gear with strange, low-roll stats, and the way to a coherent build feels clunky.

With all the new players attracted to the genre and game from false hype, (Blizzard hasn't been the Blizzard we knew for many many years) there was many questions about the seasonal content. Why force the players to replay a tedious part of the game to make your builds work? Why punish the eternal realm players by not including season pass there, too? Why refuse to add more stash tabs and functions to help players wade through the endless junk that is forced into the stash? Why not make aspects and other statistics upgradeable for a better sense of progression? Later, as the casual players came further into the game, they also started asking about the unfair mechanics, the class imbalances and artificial roadblocks that was put in place for seemingly no reason.

Blizzard ultimately answered with a massive nerf to absolutely everything that crippled many of the characters on the eternal realm, and made the apparent issues even more oppressive. The season mechanics themselves are uninspiring and suffer from the same issues - filling the few stash tabs you have even faster and with equally disappointing things.

Ultimately, the game is not worth it, and will probably never be since Path of Exile 2 will fill the void and blow this game out of the water if and when Diablo 4 finally, maybe, starts getting somewhere.

You never feel strong in this game as monsters level up with you making leveling up actually a negative. The loot feels terrible. Not one was I excited about a single loot drop. Hard pass and save your money. All of my play group wishes we could get refunds but we are passed the window to get one Expand

Campaign was solid but after that it's just the start of a long grind repeating the same 5-6 dungeons layout/boss.

The pace is way to slow, mob density is low and you pass more time going to point A to B than killing demons so except if you enjoy open world, running empty space you should pass until they add season content.

I friggin hate the current state of the game. Progressions absolutely sucks. I sometimes crash just sitting in a town while i go grab some water. The devs constantly focusing their efforts on nerfing everything in site with class skill reductions, move deletion, dungeon elite spawn rate nerfing and everything thing other than fixing the dang crashes. Don't bother playing this game. Expand

Your experience highly depends on class you choose so be aware!
Because there are some class balance and itemisation issues.
Game is fun and beautiful and i expect a lot of content is yet to come.
FYI Im not in the endgame yet,

Just does not motivate to play in the endgame. Too many bad decisions by Blizzard leading to friction everywhere. Ignoring player feedback in the beta test and then nurfing while the game is live takes away the fun of planning and investing in a build. The game makes countless mistakes that have been avoided by Last Epoch and Path of Exile.

Gameplay - 2/10. I'm bored. I don't really want to keep playing, but I'm trying to give the game an honest shot and get to end game to see if there's anything there. but so far... levels 1-40 on 3 different classes is braindead gameplay with 2/10 fun factor.
The boss battles feel more like a life skill in other mmo's than actual boss battles. On my Barbarian I just feel like I'm trying to chop down a really big (and amazing looking) tree that sometimes moves, and occasionally tickles me with it's branches. It usually results in my standing in one spot, holding left click, occasionally popping Iron Skin, and waiting the allotted 5-10 minutes it takes to slowly chop it down. Using other skills doesn't feel like it makes a difference so why not just hold left click.

I want to like this game. It looks amazing, the art team did such a phenomenal job in both characters and environments and animations. (the armor is a 10/10), but going through this world is probably the most boring gaming experience I've ever had. If it weren't for the visuals, I would have stopped on day 1 after dishing out 140$. Which hopefully speaks volumes.

Diablo, which used to be the epitome of hack and slash, has vanished and has now turned into a despicable game that maliciously aims to create unpleasant experiences for users and keep them hooked for longer.

With unbalanced gameplay and a steep price tag of $70, Diablo 4 leaves players feeling let down and yearning for the glory days of the franchise.

0/10 to balance out the weird "10/10" bomb reviews after a reddit post.

For the time we've been waiting for it, and all the missing features, the diablo inmortal UI, the shop, the repetitive endgame, the lack of build diversity, the inexistence of customizable atributes, the **** itemization (like in D3), the price, the season pass, and much more, it doesn't deserve more than a 0. I wanted it to be good, it is just plain garbage.

    TLDR:
I don't feel powerful or satisfied. It is okay for playing the story but boring afterwards.

    Enemy Scaling & Combat:
I played through the story with some side quests on a medium paste I guess.
Since the enemies scale with your level, you run into some issues. After a certain level, your level up does give you less power than it makes enemies more spongy. Much of your power comes from synergy of legendary items. If you don't get these items for 5 levels, you suddenly need four times longer to kill a group of 5-10 enemies which you killed quite fast as a fresh character at level 6.

You can at least respec for gold but it is too expensive for try and error if you are not the synergy-min-max-genius.
So the fights itself feel tedious and boring. But after finishing the story that is the only thing which is left imo.

    OpenWorld:
Again, feels fine during the Story, but after that you see the flaws. I did not count the different events but they feel repetitive and uninteresting it's either waves or waves with collection of remains....
Also due to the scaling problem you are clearing events slow and then a low level rando comes by and kills the mobs faster. That feels just odd.
On other occasion you struggle with the event than 4 people rush in and you contribute nothing. If I wanted that, I would have created a group.

So if you expect PoE or Diablo 3 style of long term engagement, maybe wait for season 3 or 4.
At least they take feedback seriously.

For all Blizzard's andies telling us that "D2 D3 hAve the Same ProbLem AT Start" "LEave DEV AloNE!!!". You don't buy a car, and your dealer tell you that you will get your "fun" fuel years later. Meanwhile, just push the car. D4 graphic looks very good, everything else from story, contents are mind-numbing.

Sure it may get fix years later, but It isn't their first time making Diablo.

Sure it may get fix years later, but It isn't their first time making Diablo. This is Blizzard’s 4th “Diablo” game with $70 for base game, MTX, battle passes, expansions. For these, I have very high standard for their game. They charge premium price up-front, I expected premium experience. Not this half-baked, boring.

I recently had the misfortune of playing Diablo, and I must say it was an experience that left me utterly unimpressed. As a long-time fan of the franchise, I had high hopes for this installment, but it ended up being a soulless, disappointing journey into the abyss of gaming mediocrity.

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
