DO NOT PAY$70 TO BE A BETA TESTER!

The game, due to the changes made in Patch 1.10, is now incredibly slow and a total slog. Leveling was slowed down DRAMATICALLY and the speed at which your character can progress was nerfed into the ground.

You will spend as much time looking at loading screens and waiting on your cooldowns to recharge as you will spend fighting monsters. The game is FILLED with bugs and some of the most game-breaking ones aren't slated to be fixed for another 4-6 months.

The end game is boring too, I don't understand how the critic reviews made it sound like there was so much to do.

On top of that, the latest patch just nerfed my build to the ground. They don't have an easy way to respect paragon points, it's such a hassle I think I'm just going to give it up at this point. Baldurs Gate is just around the corner, maybe I'll try Diablo again in a few months if ever.

Inventory is garbage, loot is garbage from lvl 70 on. NO COW LEVEL? come on. Season 1 patch is destroying everything fun that was left.

They treat this expensive ARPG worse than any other team would treat their F2P game. We still have a cash shop, we still have paid seasons, we had to pay for the game itself, yet they destroy it.

I paid for a premium ARPG experience, yet they give you the worst treatment possible. The latest season patch, I repeat, a SEASON PATCH, nerfed everything about the classes. They destroyed the already bad sorcerer class, they destroyed important stats, just to make progress slower so you can "enjoy more content". They did NOT add QoL updates, they did NOT add the performance fixes they mentioned, they did NOT fix any problems the whole community talked about, they literally did.. nothing.

They ignored all the simplest of wishes, they added no quality, no reason to play this game anymore, they only made everything that already existed way way worse. As silly as it sounds. And they called it a season patch. The patch that every ARPG releases with TONS of content.

So did they release content? Yes, they added a few unique items with literally no reason to exist, some so buggy that they teleport you into the ground. Anything else? Yes, new affixes with no reason to exist, they're just there to slow your item-chasing down, because new useless affixes mean that you have to search for longer, as the stat-pool is now larger with useless stats.

This game has a nice story, and it's fun to level from 50 to 60. After that, you're done. There is no endgame in this ARPG, as silly as it sounds. And the new season patch made the non-existent endgame even slower, more useless, and just bad.

Especially as an after-work gamer who can't go all out every day. The game content after the story was more for the really dull mind, but okay. It's Diablo and Diablo is the grind. But their now presented "solution" for missing content is just silly and the logic behind it simply disgusting. Instead of working with new, creative ideas that would get players into their season (and yes, spend money there too.) they just make everything take longer, become more annoying and overall much less fun. And then you're supposed to pay for that and enjoy playing the game? Practically none of the things that were criticised and denounced in the run-up have changed, and after hundreds of hours of play in Season 1 you might be back where you were before the season, thanks to the mostly rarely stupid Season 1 content? Thanks for that. Only 2 weeks until Baldur's Gate 3, Blizzard can learn how to create a game that is fun for the customers.

The patch for Season 1 kills the game. Barbarian got nerf too much that force players to switch to other class completely. I don't like this change.

I've been a player of Diablo games on and off for 20 years or so. This latest iteration of the franchise cost me $100 for the top tier package.

    1. The game offers (for me) about 1 month of content. Replay value is minimal for various reasons explained below.

    2. The grind to max level is long and brutally repetitive. Repeating the same actions over and over for minimal results is not fun.

    3. End-game content is minimal. Once a character is max level, the game becomes a garbage man simulator. You pick up the trash, you take the trash to the dump. Repeat ad infinitum.

    4. Certain items, "Uniques", some of which are necessary for a particular class or build to reach maximum potential, are essentially unobtainable without devoting huge amounts of time to the same boring and repetitive grind. If you have a full time job, or a family, or any other commitments which may preclude devoting vast quantities of time to farming the same content over and over, you might as well forget about it.

    5. My experience, typically, over many years of playing various games, is that the longer you play the game and the more time you spend working on your character, the better and more powerful it becomes. That is NOT the case with Diablo 4. This is not a fault with the game itself, but rather the developer. You can have a perfectly built character, and in a single stroke, with one patch, your ability and power is gone. What you could do yesterday you cannot do today. What was easy yesterday is hard today. What worked yesterday does not work today. What used to be good is now bad. What used to be bad is still bad. The time you spent to build your character has been wasted. These heavy-handed and arbitrary changes can happen at any time, and for any reason, or for no reason whatsoever. Your character is worse today than it was yesterday through absolutely no fault or error of your own.

In short, the game is very grind-oriented with minimal end-game content and the very high possibility that any work you do will be negated with the next patch. Essentially, it's a less rewarding job that you don't get paid for. it's a working-in-corporate-America simulator. Anyone who enjoys working as a middle management drone for a large corporation will probably enjoy Diablo 4. Most of the elements are there: the soul-crushing grind for little reward, the long hours sitting at a computer, completely arbitrary changes in corporate policy with no warning or explanation, the unobtainable rewards, the stress, the family problems, the hopelessness, the "voluntary" corporate events that you really have to go to if you want to stay competitive, etc. The only things missing are the mediocre paycheck and health insurance. Instead, you have to pay for the experience.

The latest patch ruined the game. You take more damage, do less damage, helltides are worse, gearing is made so you struggle, and every class is NERFED. Loot will drop less and still drops useless loot at max level. You are penalized for group play due to increased mob health. There is no endgame content. Build diversity doesn't exist. DON'T BUY THIS GAME.

I can't talk for other classes but I've played a Necromancer, that only has a single viable spec (bone spear) that was terribly nerfed. Out of all the talents and possible build this class had to offer, only one can be realistic played without depending on those crazy niche build and items synergies and they broke it.
And let's also please mention that this build feels nothing like a Necromancer. It's just a rebranded mage that throw bones instead of ice shards. Blizz refused to give the Necro a decent summon build which is the core of the identity of this class.
I will maybe get back to the game next year, when Blizz decides to listen to it's user base. This reminds me of the D3 auction house disaster when they tried to ruin the whole game and decided to move away from it after months of critiques.

So, things now take longer, reward less, and appear to have but a single design gial in mind: Delay everything so that Activision can artificially inflate their aytime metrics. Instead of accomplishing this by making an enjoyable game that people want to play, they make every activity take longer and actively hotfix anything that people find to make the game enjoyable. They actually increased the channel time to leave a dungeon when it is finished...

To quote an almost perfect synopsis of the most recent patch:

A dungeon crawler that feels more like a game of fetch the stones and put them on the pedestals." https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/153hzqg/what_blizzard_doesnt_understand/ Collapse

Diablo IV was marketed and sold as a retail game. It was not marketed as still in development or early access. I would argue that the player base has been treated like unpaid testers by Blizzard. Not purchasers of a working retail product.

The game is incredibly shallow. The main campaign is short and pretty boring if I am honest. The end game is also uninspiring. The dungeons and boss fights quickly feel reused and repetitive. The loot is largely garbage. Also the game is missing a lot of quality of life mechanics that have pretty much become the standard. These might be added later. Potentially in the cash shop.

This game is meant for season players only. Season characters are only good for that season. My understanding is that seasons will last three months. This is where the new content is. New content as of now will not make its way to the permanent server. This means a player will need to level four characters a year to see the new content.

Speaking of the server. I have seen a lot of people reporting having issues with disconnects. I only experienced this a couple times. Nothing excessive but probably worth mentioning as it has definitely been a talking point.

Now the patch and season one. What Blizzard pulled was the classic bait and switch. They boosted the characters to make the game a more enjoyable experience at launch. Then crushed the permanent server players with nerfs. I am hoping for a No Man's Sky or Cyberpunk type rebound for the game. I would not hold my breath though.

If the experience that is available today was available when the game was released; it would hold a couple more records. It would still be the fastest selling game of all-time. However it would also hold several games returned records.

There isn't much else to like here. The game play is a combination of Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft with some inspiration from Lost Ark and Path of Exile thrown in. Most bosses are either simple or have mechanics directly copied from Path of Exile.

The development philosophy seems to be the standard one from Blizzard. Players will take turns being powerful. However, their concept of what powerful should be is hilariously out of tune with the rest of the ARPG market. The same way your character plays at level 5 is likely to be the way it plays at level 100 unless you get perfect gear.

The worst part of the game is that it isn't fun. You will be pulled forward by the feeling of completing the story and leveling to get to the next tier of content from levels 1-50. Once you get to the next tier you will find that the fun falls off. Gear doesn't make major changes to your character and nothing on the Paragon board does either.

Worst of all, the developers have a philosophy that will result in your character becoming less powerful if you are playing something that is above C tier. Since the power curves are still almost exactly the same as they were before their most recent path 1.10 it seems very likely the Nerf bat will be hitting again.

The game has graphical hitches randomly on my 3080 where whole seconds will freeze. Likely, there is something wrong with their texture streaming. This is when I am in the middle of a fight with bosses or other mobs, so it isn't something I would expect. I'm using an AMD 5600 with a Western Digital Black drive. If you are on a similar (or lower) setup there is a good chance you will have glitches.

The game is also exceedingly buggy in ways that are baffling. One quest requires you to change your in-game FPS to make it so that you can complete it. You will be trapped at a wall that you can't kill with NPCs that are supposed to kill it unless you zone into the dungeon with 1 FPS.

That's the kind of game you are playing. The design philosophy is one of tedium and the game play is tied to your FPS.

Then the dev team woke up one day and they said, damm how can I kill any enjoyment this game has for everyone... oh yeah I know! let's nerf everything around the board and make people feel weak in an arpg that already has low density of monsters! When I say nerfs it's of a magnitude of almost half the power we had and that BEFORE a new season.

to top it off as a big middle finger to their playerbase that were dumb enough to spend money on a blizzard game, they also made teleporting out of a dungeon 5 seconds instead of 3... why? that's anyone's guess but I think it's only to inflate playtime.... yay wasting people time for no reason..

i'm just sad that they took a game with already some issues that could be better and possibly a great arpg if they decided to fix those but then they decided to just throw it in the garbage because of that horrible dev team. the diablo franchise will never be the same.

The bottom line is to avoid this game and anything related to Blizzard. The old Blizzard is dead. These current Devs need to figure out what makes a game fun.

    - Nerfed XP gain in a game that already was a huge time sink to get to the end game.

    - Nerfed player power, both offensively and defensively, across the board made everyone weaker after spending hundreds of hours farming for gear, and just out of the blue, they made all our equipment irrelevant.

    - Nerfed Player enjoyment, reducing cooldowns so we can't use our abilities more.

These are just a few dumb changes they made that no one asked for. But they completely ignored what we, the players, have asked for from the beginning to make the game more fun. These dev don't enjoy their own game.

We found that many problems occurred on the players, so we decided to reduce the player’s playing experience through various changes in order to achieve the goal of reducing the total number of players. The following are examples of changes: We fixed the problem that the barbarians were too strong due to game errors, and let the barbarians return to their proper strength range; We found that players can always overcome challenges and defeat the ultimate boss, so we weakened many defensive attributes, and called players who choose the defensive style cowards; we received many players saying that magicians are weak compared to other classes, but we still saw that magicians can beat the ultimate boss, so we decided to continue to weaken magicians.

Diablo 4 fails to live up to its legendary predecessors, primarily due to its lack of quality of life features and perplexing approach to gameplay balancing.

The heart of Diablo's allure has always been the thrill of slaying hordes of demonic enemies, but in Diablo 4, this core experience is disappointingly diluted. Instead of facing formidable hordes, players encounter mere pockets of 3 or 4 monsters, robbing us of the epic battles we long for and leaving us yearning for the adrenaline-pumping chaos of past installments.

The loot system, another pillar of the franchise, takes a significant hit in Diablo 4. Discovering compelling gear feels lackluster, as the majority of uniques and rare items are often underwhelming or outright useless. Obtaining uber uniques, the pinnacle of gear, feels like an unattainable dream for most players, leaving us disenchanted and longing for the joy of uncovering powerful items that define our builds.

Adding to the disappointment is the limited storage space, exacerbated by the addition of gems, aspects, potions, and sigils, forcing players to choose between hoarding valuable items or making progress. Tedious inventory management hinders immersion in the game's world, rather than enhancing it.

Character development suffers as well. Switching to a different build becomes an arduous task without a straightforward respec option, as players are left manually forgetting each node. This oversight demonstrates a disregard for player convenience and enjoyment.

To make matters worse, any elements of fun or power that players discover are swiftly subjected to heavy-handed nerfs. Instead of embracing player enjoyment in mastering a particular playstyle or build, the developers suppress any sense of empowerment, leading to a frustrating sense of stagnation and discouragement.

In conclusion, Diablo 4's lack of quality of life features and its tendency to obliterate anything enjoyable are disheartening aspects of a once-celebrated franchise. The absence of hordes of demons and the abysmal loot system dampen the excitement that once defined the series. Limited storage space and cumbersome character respec mechanics further contribute to the overall feeling of neglect towards player satisfaction.

Blizzard had an opportunity to create a masterpiece that would captivate old and new fans alike. Instead, Diablo 4 stands as a cautionary tale of how a beloved franchise can falter when its core essence is disregarded. At its current state, the game is a far cry from its predecessors and leaves us longing for the glory days of the past. Until significant improvements are made, Diablo 4 remains a shadow of what it could have been, a sad reminder of how Blizzard killed the game.

A Catastrophic Disaster - Diablo 4's Recent Patch Ruined the Experience

I can't even begin to describe the sheer disappointment and frustration I've experienced with Diablo 4 since their recent patch. It's like the developers were trying their best to take a great game and systematically destroy everything that made it enjoyable.

To start, the servers were an absolute disaster at launch. It's mind-boggling how a game of this magnitude could have such a catastrophic server failure. It's as if they didn't anticipate the number of players eager to try the game, leaving us all stranded with connection issues and unable to even access the content we had paid for.

The so-called "changes" the developers implemented have been nothing but infuriating. They seem to have a sadistic pleasure in making players rebuild their characters repeatedly, rendering any progress made in the game completely futile. I invested time and effort into building a character that I enjoyed, only to have it stripped away by an ill-conceived patch.

The lack of availability of the season pass for months was simply inexcusable. Players who were looking forward to additional content and rewards were left in the dark for an unacceptable amount of time. It's like the developers couldn't be bothered to address their own issues, let alone keep the player base engaged with new content.

Perhaps the most infuriating aspect of this whole ordeal is the developer's response to players' legitimate concerns. Instead of acknowledging the problems and promising to improve, they have the audacity to tell us to "play another game." How disrespectful can a game development team be to its loyal fanbase?

The state of the Diablo 4 community is a testament to the developers' blatant disregard for their players. The community is not just unhappy; it's enraged and demoralized. We had high hopes for this game, but instead, we received a slap in the face with every poorly managed decision the developers made.

In conclusion, Diablo 4's recent patch has been a complete disaster. The game is in shambles, and the developers' lack of communication and understanding of their player base has caused irreversible damage. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this game to anyone. Save yourself the frustration and heartache and find another game that actually respects its players and values their time and dedication.

Save your money, trust me. This is coming from someone who has many hours in the game, only to reach a non existent endgame, boring gameplay loop, and unfulfilling itemization.

Diablo 1 was better. Less patches to. It is almost like Blizzard lost their way and became corporate nightmare.

Blizzard nerfed anything that could be considered fun, boring characters, boring story, boring end game. Waste of $70, waste of time.

But let’s factor in that unique items are a thing of the past. There’s no more hunting for that SoJ or maybe The Oculus, ‘cause now, it’s all just a huge pile of item attributes which you can throw around at your own pleasure, with absolutely zero sense to it, ‘cause once you move up a World Tier, your items are useless any way.

The magic is gone. It’s an endless twirl of hacking and slashing supported with zero incentive to keep going. Factor in, you’ll need to start over every three months in order to access the seasonal content.

This is for sure the end of the Diablo series and it should be for Blizzard as well.

I write this review after uninstalling it, since I kept getting stuck in endless loading screens until the game kicked me out. The season mechanic itself is as boring as running nightmare dungeons over and over again.
The only difference you are weaker and deal less damage.
Uninspired season theme which forces you to guess what... do the same thing over and over again just like nightmare dungeons.
There is no content worth your time.
All this slowing down of the game is just to funnel people into buying the premium season pass and get them into the mtx shop.
Most expensive game I wish I never bought.
Last Blizzard game I will ever buy again.

Diablo IV is extremely boring. I could not play longer than 30 minutes without yawning.
    - Monsters and difficulty levels are scaled up according to your level, so every time, every type of monster represents the same difficulty. There is barely any challenge in fighting with the mobs in this game.
    - Quests are very repeatable, and their main purpose is to push you into another corner of the map just in case you forgot to waste your time on useless grinding
    - Dungeons are repeatable as well. There are a few types of dungeons: short corridor + single room or short corridor + one cavern where you have to fight against a tiny group of enemies. A few seconds later, you can leave the place with a supertiny amount of exp and crapy loot. Please believe me - loading time takes longer than completing such dungeons. More complex dungeons are built from pre-configured coarse-grained modules, so after 3rd map, you can see the pattern: there is always a roundabout, and there is always a need to collect two things (keys, boxes, parts) that have to be delivered to the gate/blocked passage which leads to the big cavern/room with the boss. Always.
Loot...loot is boring. Do you remember how every weapon, armor, or other stuff had a unique look and feel in Diablo 1? Forget about it in Diablo IV. A few repeatable shapes of each type (with slightly different colors) of your equipment in a multi-gigabyte game in 2023...
Stats? Percentages and meaningless variables that you barely notice after a few hours.
    - Skills? Hahaha, Blizzard wanted to copy at least some tiny part from successful competitor PoE, so they added a skill tree. Tiny. Boring. Useless.
There are plenty of issues like this, and neither DLC nor season will fix it because the game is absolutely boring and destroyed at its core.
One of the most amazing things in Diablo was the cinematics. I played and progressed to the next Act mainly to watch the story development through outstanding pre-rendered animations.
In Diablo IV most of the cinematics were played using the game engine.

Don't throw your money into this.

You CAN'T even buy a premium battle pass if you purchased the 100$ version that came with an accelerated battle pass because the game FORCES you to use it, even though Blizzard explicitly said you can save it for later seasons!

Sure you can, but if you do you CAN'T get the premium battle pass because the game forces you to use the accelerated battle past first!

The 1.1.0 patch completely gutted the game, and it was so widely hated they had to do an emergency livestream the following friday just to try and quell the backlash.

This has been ONE of the BIGGEST flops i've ever seen, honestly.
I don't know how they dropped the ball this hard, how they're so out of touch with their community.

The game is not even worth playing in its current state.

The intent seems to be to slow the player down in order to keep players grinding as opposed to actually improving the game itself. The nerfing of the eternal realm paired with the solutions to said nerfs in the new season is a very clear attempt to funnel people out of their current characters and into new seasonal characters. The premium battlepass linked into this seasonal character progression makes it quite easy to see the likely motivation for these changes. The devs want to make money off of the current player base. The way they make money is by getting as many players as possible to play in the new season for as long as possible in order to get as much exposure to and purchasing of the battlepass as possible. This is frankly a very scummy approach and very concerning for the future of the game. Diablo 4 isn't a bad game, it has strong roots to it, and with a little bit of work, it could be an incredible and long lived game. However, the current direction that the game is taking unfortunately doesn't suggest this outcome. Things may eventually start moving in the right direction, but currently the dev strategy seems to be focused on profit over enjoyable player experiences. Hopefully the negative reception to their current direction moves things back on track, but with the current state and direction of the game, I'd advise waiting to see how things turn out. Paying $70 for a game that is seemingly being developed with the primary intent of farming you for more money is frankly not worth it. Hopefully Diablo 4 takes the Battlefront 2 trajectory and rebounds from a predatory game to a genuinely good production, but only time will tell. Expand

Why they didnt look at what made D2 and D3 successful and update for current gen games, I have no clue. But D4 is a GIANT step backward. How do you have mobile game that is more compelling than a full triple A title?

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
