Fantastic art design great combat and a far more engaging story than previous parts.
Yet, the longer you play D4 the more hollow it feels.
Don't get me wrong, playing one character through the story and reaching maybe lvl70 is great. But then what. You will never encounter the cool bosses again. The super rich, variable world begins to turn into a grey/brown mush, because you are so

THIS IS NOT A MULTIPLAYER UNLESS YOU BRING ALONG FRIENDS.
There is no functioning matchmaking, the is no chat system seeing any appreciable use, there is no trading.
All in all a perfectly fine single player, off-line game at a to high prize and with the questionable need to always be online.

If you can, wait another year I am sure it will get better.

A Mediocre game with great polish. Starts out great but only goes downhill from there. Also there is too much Diablo Immortal trickery added at the cost of the base game's quality. RIP old Blizzard where seeing just the logo would mean an awesome game was coming next.

A lot of dumb kids just bombing the rating without even playing the game.
The game overall is ok. You can definitely spend there few weeks-month by playing campaign and then exploring some endgame stuff to do until it starts getting boring. I had fun playing this amount of time so gaming is good.
Rating it as 6, because game also has issues that needs to be solved.

The game feels NOTHING like Diablo 1 or 2. I played the campaign through five times and almost all the side quests twice, skipping the campaign only twice on the way to 50+ level characters, but I probably should have only played it once with a single character and stopped. The endgame seems pointless. I was having an easy time with a 71st level character, but leveling higher felt boring. There is NO story.

The campaign is OK but very dark. For example, you walk past almost as many human torture-victim corpses as the total enemies you encounter. On the other hand, I sort of liked that maybe 40% of the side-quests had sad endings - that seemed like a brave decision on the part of the developers.

It's quite difficult to find co-op partners, partly because there is so much to do specifically for one's own character, but mostly because Blizzard seemed to put almost no effort into matchmaking.

The Legion events where one joins a PUG to fight several consecutive hordes of enemies are fun, but the world bosses seem boring after you've completed a couple. The Hell-Tide events are OK; the first few are quite fun. Solo dungeons are repetitive.

There is a certain amount of satisfaction in slowly figuring out how to (relatively) quickly assess which of the endless stream of looted items are worth using, but that's the main problem with the game - it's 50% administration: picking up loot, sorting loot, salvaging loot, rolling to change one enhancement to a piece of loot, looking through your large bonus magic runes to decide which to add to a new piece of loot. All this is done, of course, at NPC's that are several seconds walk apart from each other. It pays off in power - I've heard of some people who died frequently, whereas I never had much trouble completing anything. Because I paused to pick the best loot and upgrade it correctly. But all in all, I would have preferred not to play a game that included so much administration. Solo or co-op, the game should be mostly fighting.

My first play through would probably rate a 7.5; my final experiences with the game were about a 3.

Technically this game is very solid. Oh, there are bugs and network issues, but they are not THAT bad. And on the art side this game hits a home run, things look great and sound great. Even the story is decent, and that's not a given in this genre...
The real pain is in the shoddy implementation of game mechanics. Where do I start?
    - Class balance is a joke. It doesn't exist. To add insult to injury, the devs seem to focus on balancing around seasonal content as if the permanent "eternal realm" characters don't exist and suffer from even bigger gaps in power.
    - Endgame is extremely limited and repetitive.
    - Half the mobs have some sort of "I go kaboom on death" effect, which gets tedious.
    - Items are legit boring, due to multiple factors:
    1. Once you get to level 75 or so you are reduced to a line-worker checking an endless stream of "rares" for some 1% upgrade.
    2. The game is littered with situational affixes like "+5% damage to purple enemies when you are hungry". This exacerbates the issue of finding "good" items.
    3. The existing system of "legendary" items is lackluster. You unlock powers in dungeons but practically never want to use those because they are so weak, instead constantly spinning the wheel for a better version to drop... but these are "1 time use".
    4. Game is missing useful, direct affixes on items, like "+ 100 fire damage" or "3% chance to stun".
    5. Resistances are completely broken, have been for over 3 months, and still not fixed.
    6. Some stats straight up lie to you, like "% damage reduction" which DOES NOT work as a stacking bonus.
    7. Most of the "unique" items are pointless to use.
    8. No sets, no runewords, no real meaning behind item durability.
    9. No loot filter.

I could go on... thing is, practically every one of these issues can be fixed with dedication. I know that ONE DAY this game will be great. But it just isn't there yet, and I am sad.

They had D2 as a super solid foundation for an amazing ARPG but there they go again with the D3-like formula of trying to reinvent the wheel without even innovating. The price is well worth it and Diablo 4 is in no shape or form anything bellow exceptional. How Blizzard will manage the game? Lets wait and find out!

Edit: I've decreased my vote to 6/10 because scaling at high levels 80+ is insanely boring even with gg gear and they keep nerfing every single dungeon because some random streamer grinds. Almost all of them are boring as of 12/06/23. They care only about their KPIs.

Edit: Dropped to 5/10, I would originally gave it a bit less but this review bombing is not OK. Reason is the recent patches have been very mismanaged.

A bit torn on this one. The aesthetic is much improved from D3 but feels like a 'nightmare' skin plastered on top of a cartoon rather than something created from scratch with a horror theming in mind... it's really hard to explain but it too often doesn't 'feel' right to me.

But that's by the by if the gameplay was fantastic and... well, again, it's not 'bad', it's just uninspired.

But that's by the by if the gameplay was fantastic and... well, again, it's not 'bad', it's just uninspired. Rarely does a game leave me a bit lost trying to describe it and having to resort to the word 'feel' but... yeah, again, too often it just doesn't 'feel' right. I'm honestly sorry but it's one of those 'you have to play it to see what I mean' scenarios because words don't do it justice.

The story, on the other hand, I can describe easily - shallow, tepid nonsense that falls off a cliff, every bit as pointless as Diablo 3. D2 got the 'show don't tell' balance right, nothing in the series has since.

Microtransaction/battle pass nonsense unfortunately exist. In a full price game. They have no right to, but unfortunately the consumers have been stupid enough to lose the war on that one to the point it's barely worth mentioning anymore, but for me any paid game with them in loses points. That's not 'review bombing', it's just common sense that if a game features a system that is to the detriment of a consumer, then it should be marked down for it.

As it is, it's not the worst implementation of it, but it's Blizzard, so expect nonsense down the line.

I don't hate Diablo 4. I absolutely don't love it either. I actually prefer D2:R overall - yes, it's 'simpler', but it still does what it intends to do very well, has no bloat/filler and respects the player. But if we're all being honest, there's simply better aRPGs outside the Diablo franchise now - much better in fact - and Diablo 4 doesn't do enough to reclaim the title.

Side quests 4/10 they are sooo flat... why not having side quests like in Witcher 3., going have to do this each season.... nope.
Group play and PVP N/A I Only Solo.
Leveling, Skills 5/10 way too fast to 50, Way to slow after 50. you have 100% legendries at level 40... ridiculous... I suggest you finish story as fast as you can, if you start exploring you will hit 50 on chapter 1 or 2 and will be a chore to get to Tier 3. Skills are way too simplified like in D3, Paragon board is laughable. Take a look at Last Epoch for interesting skill leveling. They don't understand what Mana shield is all about... a mage skill adding +3 x 3 mana lol...
Mount 6/10 is Gimmick and pretty clunky but can help you get somewhere faster, kills the exploration again...
QoL 5/10 it's ok but lacks...
Gameplay 8/10: feeling of combat is great, but lacks of skill to much Console play in mind so have a very basic skills bar.
Endgame 3/10 Whispers are ok otherwise it would be a 1/10. same dungeons all the time, even rifts we're more diverse! doing it just for adding stupid points on the boring paragon board....
Overall 5/10 if It had not been sold as a Diablo game it would be receiving a 3 by most reviewers.
This game is probably dead after Season one, unless paragon board get's interesting, every dungeon is unique with floors!, has a decent fog of war, has a solo mode, Unique monsters that are like in D2 and D3. I made 2 classes Rogue and Mage and I am done, no interest for the other ones running the same thing again with this kind of super boring leveling system.

    They didn’t took any risk

    - itemization: bland, soulless, boring
    - story: decent until your character took the damn stupid decision to refuse Lilith offer
    - campaign: so many unskippable dialogues… escort mission and low mob density
    - skill system: boring and limited. The 4basic, 4 core system makes it have max 1-2 decent build per class. There is no possible theorycrafting or diversity possible. The generator/spender system has been a franchise killer

Combat: the amount of CC you have to endure is killing the fun, especially for melee. It doesn’t matter to have unstoppable 4 sec… you’ll be Cc for the rest of the Cooldown of your skill. Pvp is decent

    Endgame: boring same crap

    Crafting: non-existent

Qol: lacks so much of it… no map overlay, no gem tab, no proper search function

Like boring loot or classes that are so endlessly slow-paced and boring in the levelling process that io cannot play more than 20 minutes before asking myself, why I waste my gaming time on such a title. The world is large and (surprise surprise) mostly bleak and not interesting. And the thing that I despise the most is the fact, that (before dipping deep into endgame -maybe) your character gets weaker with every level! Pretty much a mediocre ARPG. Would be 6-7 if it didn't cost $90.

    Some reasons are: - Boring itemization - stack crit chance, crit damage, and vuln damage; - Lack of build diversity - 2-3 builds for a class. Even less if you're a sorcerer; - The endgame loop is far beyond boring - I can't describe it in words but while playing this game between monster packs I felt utterly frustrated;

Revised update 7/28. The dev's are addressing the imbalance they introduced, I've changed my review from 0 --> 5. Communicating to the community and changing the game in a positive direction. Middle of the road is a good score for now until we see the results and if they respect players time.

Honestly the game had a great starting point and there was a lot of hope. The story is amazing, the art and world they built is awesome. The gameplay and balance reek of mismanagement and horrific decision making by people motivated by how long people play rather than if the playtime is enjoyable.

They're slowing everything way down and killing the game. They nerf anyway to acquire gear that isn't NM dungeons, buff the amount of gear that drops in them but lower the quality by adding worthless stats that no one is using AND we don't have a loot filter to sort out if anything decent drops...AND we have little to no storage space for saving gear we might want. They don't respect your time or themselves with the changes we've seen. It's a shame to ruin a game that had this much promise.

    It launched as a 6/10 with potential. It's a 0 now.

It’s almost like Diablo 4 developers are consciously fighting against everything that made classic Diablo fun. [Issue#262, p.80]

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.

The best Blizzard launch in a long time and a worthy game to be called Diablo.
