The best Blizzard launch in a long time and good game

People are crazy giving 0 and then complaining with low marks for their favorite games, there is no criterion and this game is not a 2, so it has to be put in its place...

I see reviews like 2 and 3… People are you nuts?!
Sure this game has some drawbacks. But i personally been having tons and tons of fun playing D4! Plot is interesting, class is cool (i play rogue), mechanics are very satisfying.
And you know what? The style is top notch! Its just a pleasure to spend time in this world, listen to dialogs, feel the grim atmosphere. Who cares about anything

I'm thoroughly enjoying Diablo IV. The campaign is compelling, the art is amazing, and I enjoy the numerous nods to the previous games, especially running into old friends and older enemies. I can tell that the team are fans of the franchise and not trying to remake it into something else. Changing set bonuses into "aspects" that you can mix and match on your gear is a brilliant departure from the previous games. I like the skill system and the paragon board, especially how certain glyphs on the paragon board incentivize investing in stats I might have ignored otherwise.

Yes, there are annoyances - the stash is far too small and barely functional for example - but they aren't fundamental problems with the game design and I'm confident they will eventually be fixed. I see the balance changes (aka nerfs) as a positive for my style of play. For me, ARPGs are about trying different build gimmicks not two-shotting the uber boss. killing less-geared players in PvP or billion-damage crits. I play for my own amusement, not to compete with other players, or to generate social media content. If you are a more competitive player, I would probably recommend waiting for leaderboards to be added. At that point, I'm guessing the balance changes will be less drastic, so any time you invest in developing strategies to level and gear up quickly won't be completely undone by one patch.

I can sympathize with players that are upset they're going to have to go back to the drawing board for their builds. But for me this is why I played seasonal characters exclusively in Diablo 3. I like creating a fresh character and trying fresh build ideas instead of having to retrofit existing characters to take advantage of the new items or fix gear that is no longer best-in-slot for a particular class.

Good game. There are some problems with the endgame content, which will probably be resolved as they were in D3, and there are some QoL features I would love to see in the future, like a separate gem inventory tab, reduced/missing cd on the mount, portals directly to the nightmare dungeons, etc.
Anyway, it is a solid foundation for a long-living game, a nice casual change of pace from PoE

Anyway, it is a solid foundation for a long-living game, a nice casual change of pace from PoE experience, with a good story (better than everything that was in Diablo before), great sound, and visuals.
Non-paid transmog looks really sick and in many cases better than the paid ones, and after thinking about it for a while - paid shop is not the worst thing to have, since this game is planned as a service, I just hope it will only be cosmetics and nothing that affects gameplay. The price tag is kinda hurt though.

I never had high hopes for d4 and I am glad that the game is good, for now, it can give one many hours of fun, and with good support, it could ramp up to thousands. Probably.

Regarding the open world and online: You sometimes see other players, you sometimes to some random events together and that's it, it is by no means too intrusive, as some cry.

Also, the area scaling is a good thing, no boring areas that are so far under you, that there is no challenge left, at the same time is the open world not so challenging anyway.

Balancing is not perfect and I'm sure we'll see quite some balancing patches incoming in the near future.

Where I'm not quite sure is how long the endgame can keep me busy. In any case, I'm eagerly awaiting the first season in July with new contents and challenges.

Please respect the amount of work and dedication this team did to bring us an amazing product. No clue how anyone can give this a 0 to 5. Sometimes fans or reviewers are just so disrespectful it makes me sad to think they can’t just sit back and enjoy things instead of tear things down. This game while not perfect is a blast.

Whatever the negative reviews are, are from ham and eggers who do not understand the fundamentals of modern ARPG games. The base of this game is fantastic, they just have to build upon it to make it a near perfect game. It's no Diablo 1 or 2 however that time has passed and we have what I call the real Diablo 3.

A solid starting point for the game. No queue times, rarely get disconnects or crashes, fun open world, tons of content and a great story. They've been very quick to squash obvious things that are broken and seem dedicated to making this a fun experience for all. The cherry on top is no pay to win gear / power. Fingers crossed they bring fresh content steadily coming!

The loot system and endgame can be improved, but looking at everything else the game offers, that's acceptable. The game is still better than everything else the market currently has to offer.

Let's face it: when all the real critics say it's a good game, then it's a good game and the children from certain toxic gaming communities who downvote the game are wrong.

I think people are hard, the game itself have fantastic graphics and creative content. Everything is much more better than D3. People didn't complain that much back in D2.
Some things could be improved like inventory management, and they probably will, but it doesn't ruin the game and it will certainly be changed soon.
The only thing I miss from D2 is trading.

Diablo IV is a vast improvement to the franchise, perfectly mixing the best features of 2 and 3, while adding lots of things on top that make the experience even better. The story is great, the combat is fun and deep, the world offers great explorations and things to do. Highly Recommended. It's sad that gamers, who have issues with certain aspects can't be reasonable with their reviews.

Always Online ? I agree on this one. It kinda sucks. I don't really want to see other players in *my* town and login in to play single player is lame.
Build diversity ? I'm seeing complaints of "there's only 10 builds". You guys are ridiculous. Did you already make those 10 builds ? Do you not expect things to evolve in the future ? Maybe give the game more than a week before dismissing it ?

I get that we want to compare this game with all the great games that came in the past, but you can't expect ALL releases to be significantly better in every aspect than everything else at launch.

Can it improve ? Of course.
Am I having fun right now and getting my money's worth ? For sure.

It's not too complicated, while at the same time being challenging when needed. Also, the couch co-op is what sets this game above the rest. Maybe people would be giving it better reviews if they had friends to play with. Doing anything alone for long periods of time is enough to make someone hate something such as a video game. When I'm able to play, I enjoy playing for long periods of time, then when I'm getting irritated or burned out I go outside, work out, and maybe even touch grass. This hard reset really helps to keep me grounded and reminds me that it's just for fun. Gameplay:
The mechanics are easy to understand but not so trivial to master, with the pace of new mechanics introduced (paragon at level 50) being good. The cost of rerolling equipment and imprinting aspects scales with level (even in relation to your income of those currencies) and so it feels that it's easier to create good gear early and gets harder as you reach end game, as it should. Aspects being imprintable is a good design decision that raises the floor so people do not have to spend 100+ hours finding aspects that are critical to their build. However, to actually have great gear, you will need to farm for high rolls on the aspects and stats on items. The fact that you don't have to find items with both great stats and aspect because you can imprint good aspects onto it is apparently controversial, but I don't think it should be. There are many QoL improvements over previous games, but people will always find something to complain about.

    Campaign:
The campaign can be played through in about 20 hours at a leisurely pace if you do not do many side quests, and has OK writing with excellent cinematics and voice acting as usual. The story has some major questions that they never resolved, for example at the start: why are we, a total scrub, trying to catch up to Lilith, a relatively important demon? Isn't that just asking to be killed? The ending was also a bit bewildering, but the leading up to it mostly made sense. Another point is that the player character never has any choice narratively, and makes some decisions that I would not. It's understandable as an ARPG that you have no choice in the narrative, but perhaps that's a point of innovation that Blizzard might've been able to go for.

    Combat:
Combat feels mostly fluid, but is plagued by being always-online. This leads to some rubber-banding and lag from my shoddy internet connection. Being online does not really offer much social benefits like a usual MMO, so it seems like it's mostly to combat piracy and as a form of DRM.

    Itemization:
A special note on itemization in addition to my comment under gameplay. I do not understand why many reviews claim itemization is ver simple - it is not. It's not on POE's levels of complexity of having connected gem slots, but it does not need to be that complex. Complex does not equal good. There are many damage modifier buckets that combine multiplicatively with other buckets and additively for sources within the bucket. This itself offers some depth to plan out gear to cover multiple buckets as they scale much better (as the modifiers can get to pretty high numbers - 100% damage and 100% damage in two buckets = 2 * 2 = 4x the damage for different buckets vs 1 + (1+1) = 3x the damage for the same bucket.

The bandits dragging an anxious monk through dark vaults seemed to just be a generic tease for the typical moment to moment gameplay. It all changes when Elias reveals himself and begins the ritual to summon Lilith and kicks off the next chapter of a story that I wouldn’t have expected to be this good. In a great move to get back in touch with the franchise’s roots, the story plays out as the wanderer is following their trail close behind dealing with the depravity left in their wake. It was the darkness of Diablo 2 but upgraded with modern storytelling tools that made you feel the sense of urgency missing in that game. Through gorgeous cinematics, gruff penetrating dialogue from Lorath, and a large handful of perfectly placed lore texts on relics and objects D4 gives you a near perfect story delivery and pays off with the journey and destination colliding in the end. I was wrong to doubt you, Blizzard.
Diablo 4, like its predecessors, is two different games. The brilliance of that opening trailer was I think it appealed and excited fans of both. The first game is navigating your character through this brutal story which brought back some much-needed hell back to the franchise. At multiple points I physically tensed up at the horrific displays of torture, gore, and body mutilation you would expect from a game all about demons. The game hits hard with action from the jump, and only has a couple long breaks to fill in story pieces that I wish had been a tad shorter. Outside these moments the story is a 9.5/10, and for me makes a run at top 10 stories ever told in video games. It’s wonderful to see a game use all the modern tools of cinematics, next generation graphics, phenomenal voice acting, and player character rendering to suck you in and make you feel every part of the journey. I have always liked both games nested within Diablo but thought game 1 was subpar compared to other triple A titles. My low expectations we’re sent straight to hell in this installment however, and once again Blizzard, my bad for doubting.
When you finish Act VI which I recommend making that your first and only goal, game 2 truly immediately opens. You are introduced to the Tree of Whispers and told how to collect Grim Favors from around Sanctuary, and this is a great jumping off point to start interfacing with the renown tracks of each region. It gives you a nice extra reward for completing tasks around the map that you are already rewarded for doing. I’ve played to level 80, and occasionally I still enjoy completing these for a nice minor cache of loot. The renown is a great way to get you to fully explore everything that sanctuary has to offer. The one gripe I had was the Altars of Lilith we’re cool for about 5 minutes, and then just became a boring task to just complete. Every other piece of the renown track was an enjoyable grind and got a good foothold into the game. Once this is complete you have your full 58 skill points, are probably somewhere in the mid 60s for your character level and have gotten a nice intro into the paragon board endgame systems. For the casual gamer who wants to continue playing other games and enjoying life outside, please consider that this is you beating the game. Like, seriously, please believe me, YOU DID IT. You beat the game. You accomplished everything that matters. Let me explain.
You beat game one after watching the epilogue cutscene at the end of ACT VI. This is a given. Game 2’s endpoint will be different for everyone, and I think that’s a great thing. For me in a non-seasonal environment, I’m about to reach the end of my progression dreams. From about 65 on with maximum renown, you are basically full build in terms of Legendary Aspects, the power of your gear is maxed, and you have started picking up powerful Paragon bonuses. By this point you have probably done a handful of nightmare sigils and leveled your glyphs which add substantial power. After that, it’s just numbers going up in a game play loop of Dungeons, Helltides, and Whispers. The amount of numbers that go up compared with the amount of these you have to do gets further and further apart. That’s it. If you enjoy that, head for 100 with glee. If not, wait till next season. You’ve beaten a game that is a bonified 9.5/10 to that point with very minor problems. You’ve enjoyed yourself much. Play something else and we’ll see you in July!

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
