Trials Rising is the latest of the nearly-20 year phenomenon which, unfortunately, proves that less can indeed be more. The addition of the mid-game grind immediately dissuades the player from continuing and, coupled with the Switch version’s shortcomings, only highlights how great we used to have it.

Aldred Knight is a 2D platformer on a budget. It has a simplistic art style and a competent combat system, but it leaves something to be desired when it comes to its more hardcore platforming segments.

Dreamwalker: Never Fall Asleep isn’t the best of Artifex Mundi’s Switch eShop offerings. It’s short, and the story isn’t as fleshed out as their other releases. It does feature enjoyable gameplay, though, so come here once you’ve finished the others.

Super Destronaut DX is an arcade-ish indie title that recreates the classic Space Invaders experience in a competent-but-simplistic way. It isn’t necessarily a bad game, but it doesn’t offer enough new ideas to keep the player hooked.

Doughlings: Invasion offers another modern-day take on Space Invaders on the Switch. Unfortunately, a lack of depth and monotonous gameplay will have you thinking you’d have been better off dusting off an Atari.

Seek Hearts is an old-school JPRG that has some interesting ideas and cool mechanics. Unfortunately, all of its better aspects get buried under rough, messy, and underwhelming execution.

Lumote’s initial promise fails to deliver, with not enough of a hook to maintain long-term engagement. Its visuals are stunning, but lack variety, and the puzzling is capable, but awkward in places.

Sparkle 3 Genesis is a kind of contemplative experience that puts you in control of an ever-evolving creature. Unfortunately, it lacks variety and sounds more like a mini-game stretched out to become longer and, consequently, tedious.

Deep Ones has an interesting visual style with a simplistic feel reminiscent of some earlier titles on the ZX Spectrum, but it gets into deep water with its shifting game modes and dissatisfying controls. Considering the calibre of action-platformers on the eShop at the moment, the game drowns in amongst its competition.

Snooker 19 is a decent snooker game, but a poor entry into any other category. Dated graphics and finicky controls make this hard to recommend.

My Brother Rabbit is a short experience which is oddly missing touch controls, but is enjoyable while it lasts. There’s room for improvement, though.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is a classic Nintendo 64 FPS that perfectly enraptures the charm of its era. Certain design decisions struggle to translate well to the modern times, however, rendering the act of shooting dinos feel fun in some areas but obtuse in others.

Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk DX is a passable JRPG that hardcore fans of the genre will find positives in. However, minimal explanation for the main draw to the game, and the limiting of your time in the world are rough spots.

REZ PLZ works with a clever idea of deliberately sacrificing a character so the other can progress, but that idea doesn’t really get fleshed out. Elsewhere, the platforming is competent, but nothing you’ll remember long after playing.

Red Bow will lure gamers in with its pixel-art visuals and promise of a top-down, creepy adventure. Whilst it may impress for a short while, it will ultimately leave them wishing the game had been much more than it is.

Taxi Chaos sadly misses all the charm and fun Crazy Taxi came with. With poor graphics, simple gameplay and a ridiculous £31.49 price point, it’s hard to recommend this arcade game.

Sir Eatsalot is great on story and personality, but is undone by the pretty underwhelming platforming side of things. The touch-screen aspect, while unique, could be done away with to offer less irritation.

In its ten or so hours of gameplay, Travis Strikes Again throws up a messy concoction of minigames within a loose ‘main’ game that gets worse as you progress. The story is confusing and irrelevant, co-op is an afterthought and with muddy and jaggy visuals, it makes you wonder what the direction developer Grasshopper Manufacturer wanted to take with this spin-off. It’s clearly evident they didn’t know either.

FIA Euro Truck Racing Championship could have been a stellar addition to an underdone genre on the Switch. Instead, poor performance and lacklustre racing means it becomes yet another racing title destined for the bargain bucket.

Infini is an ambitious, unconventional puzzler. Its unusual yet conceptually simple mechanics will get you thinking laterally, but the game’s steep difficulty and unnerving atmosphere combine to make the experience somewhat grating at times.

Space Cows is a strange twin-stick shooter, sacrificing precision and control for well-intended humour that doesn’t always work. Its decision to approach the genre differently is endearing, but it’s lesser than its eShop peers as a result.

As a historical document, Ultracore is an interesting 2D run-and-gunner on Switch. It’s just a shame that modern takes on the genre have bested it at its own game. Do seek out the Strictly Limited Games CE, though.

Where Are My Friends? is a game that is trying to do too much at once and loses a lot of its potential charm because of it, if it took one of the four gameplay ideas and concentrated on making it a standalone game it could've been so much more.

JCB Pioneer: Mars is slow-paced and won’t be for everyone. There’s a lack of real excitement – this is more about the long game as you build up a base – very, very slowly.

Gutwhale is an intense yet underwhelmingly short action platformer, offering an afternoon of frustrating fun with no real reason to return once you’ve finished it. Gameplay is tight and music pulse-pounding, but it feels like little more than a demo.
