Spyro: Reignited Trilogy lives on contrasts. We can be Spyro whenever we want with the portability and a lot of content to experience with a great control system. We’ve really appreciated the return of Goscinny & Uderzo’s creature in videogame with this Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All. Choosing an arcade beat’em up was a fitting idea, and the decision to merge it with an exquisite hand-drawn graphic was the best way to start a new beginning for Asterix in modern gaming. However, the game reuses too much assets throughout the adventure and it's victim of its own repetitiveness, which prevents him to reach higher scores. We're not dealing with the typical licensed title hastily put together as a mere task; on the contrary, we have a game that, while not completely breaking free from the shadows of the titles it draws inspiration from, still strives to leave its mark. It offers accessible yet deep gameplay and a selection of modes that are quite impressive, including a genuinely interesting campaign mode. There are still some rough edges to smooth out, and – undoubtedly – more could have been done in terms of the roster. The idea of bringing the universe of the classic Metro series into a virtual reality adaptation is truly intriguing, and Metro Awakening successfully recreates its signature atmosphere of dread and fear of the unknown. This is particularly well-executed thanks to an intuitive control system and user interface that fully immerse players in the game’s post-apocalyptic world. However, a major drawback lies in the repetitiveness of scenarios and environments, which is further exacerbated by the overly long duration of the experience. The final sections, in particular, could have benefited from being more streamlined. That said, despite its various flaws, the game remains an enjoyable experience, especially if you’re a fan of the franchise and eager to dust off your VR headset (especially the PS VR2) after it has likely been sitting unused for a while.
