Need for Speed Heat has a lot of fun ideas, intense police chases, an incredible look and great sense of speed. It does however lack something to make it stand out from the pack, and after the story's done, there's not much keeping me coming back for more.

Its sometimes highfalutin story may not be for everyone, and the gameplay will undoubtedly turn some away. However, if you can get into the weirdly zen-like groove of Death Stranding, with its enticing world and deep lore, you may very well find it to be a wholly unique journey you'll end up loving every step of.

In the end it's the freedom of choice, and how those choices impact the world Obsidian has created that makes The Outer Worlds so great. You can be and act almost as you please, and do as little or as much for the people around you. Great writing, creative quest lines and solid voice acting makes the 40 hours a great experience.

Concrete Genie is simple, but deeply engaging once you get into it. The game has a lot going for it, including a good look, superb music and mechanics that are fun to use, but there's a few snags here and there – in particular the very flimsy motion controls and lackluster AI – which keep it from true greatness.

Borderlands 3 is, quite simply, more Borderlands. That means excessive charming humor, great variety in environments and sidequests and a lot of fun coop action spread throughout. The things that hold the game back are mostly minor annoyances – like the overabundance of everlasting boss fights and the gruesomely tiresome inventory management – but all in all this is a package that simply works.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a blast to play. The shooting is fun and fluid, and with a bunch of great abilities and upgrades to unlock, the game keeps you going for as long as the story lasts. Ion Fury is the ultimate retro first-person shooter that feels authentic because of its use of the ancient game engine Build. While it comes with certain limitations, it feel modern enough to be both playable and enjoyable by a 2019 audience. No story, no cutscenes – just shoot whatever moves and find hidden levers and keycards. Love it or hate it, Ion Fury brings back a certain 90s nostalgia reminiscent of Duke Nukem 3D.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is a big step in the right direction for the series. The diplomacy is the best its ever been, with the campaign events and possibilities demanding replayability. The battles are awesome as always, even though I miss a bit more unit diversity. Sadly, the stylistically beautiful visual style makes the campaign map a bit too "ethereal" to feel real and grounded even on the Records mode, and the user interface suffers from a lack of clarity, ending up being too busy and cluttered for its own good.

Rage 2's brilliant shooting fails to make up for its shortcomings everywhere else. Because even though there's fun to be had in the Wasteland, the shooting fails to keep me wanting more after not too many hours of gameplay. Imperator: Rome is a massive game, yet one that falls markedly short in comparison to what we've gotten used to with other Paradox titles like Crusader Kings 2 or Europa Universalis 4. An outdated, lacking or outright broken UI hampers the experience dramatically, despite a beautifully gorgeous new campaign map and an awesome and innovative new trade system. Flying, fighting and exploring while in one of the four javelins feels great in Anthem. The combat is varied and fun, the world is gorgeous and ripe for discovery, but too much hassle with various menus, loading screens and poor design keeps me away from the fun. The story and characters are good, the second half of the story it even better, but the characters and nuances that Bioware does so well is hidden in texts and journals, and not given enough screen time to really shine. Fort Tarsis slows down the pace too much, and repetitive quest-design doesn't help. Endgame-content is lacking, with parts of it broken, other parts not working, or just not enough variety as the game stands right now. But I still love the feel of playing Anthem, which makes it a good foundation to be built upon.

This version of Spider-Man is easily among the most fluent games of all time. This is partially because of the extremely smooth way you can swing around the city, but is also due to the way everything from the story to the combat comes together to form a cohesive and engaging whole. It's not a perfect game: There are a few boring segments throughout, some characters end up feeling a bit out of place and there's an unshakeable feeling that most of the main story has been seen before, but Insomniac still makes most of it work very, very well.
