All things considered, Avowed is an Action RPG with all the trimmings enhanced by high-quality writing, as well as a solid gameplay recipe and an artistic direction worthy of praise. The gaming experience is not yet at an optimal level of polish, the combat system is not lacking in slightly anachronistic traits and we did not fully appreciate some structural characteristics of the adventure. Yet, Obsidian's title manages to capture the player with a fascinating and cohesive universe, and if you are a fan of the genre or are looking for a journey capable of transporting you to a fantasy world of rare beauty, you may have just found bread for your teeth.

Metroid Dread is an experience that is at times deeply enjoyable and yet imperfect at the same time. MercurySteam certainly did not lack the courage to take risks, proposing new ideas, exceptional dynamism and surprising horror veins: elements that fit coherently within a winning formula, tested over the last thirty-five years. A few too many smudges - probably the result of a production not up to the height of Nintendo's heavyweights - however, end up making the whole thing miss: with some extra ideas, less repetition and a little more character in artistic terms, the result could have been be different and even more rounded. However, it is always fascinating to find Samus on our screens, in a franchise that deserves more than it usually gets (starting with the Big N).

Ku's exploits clearly do not have the narrative balance of the Greek adventures, and do not add big variations to the gameplay formula, but they prove to be a solid and pleasant extension, a digression inside a very suggestive myth that deserves to be fully explored, waiting for the release of The Lost Gods, the last act of the Season Pass ready to lead us back to Ancient Greece.

Ultimately, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is configured as a solid action RPG, whose merit, however, is limited by a general lack of refinement in the fundamental mechanics. The real highlight of the production, as often happens with Don't Nod's works, is certainly to be found in the writing, full of brilliant ideas and generally very inspired. If you are looking for a title that knows how to correctly combine a dark atmosphere setting with a passionate (and at times heartbreaking) love story, you are in the right place. In conclusion, Darkest Dungeon II has taken a different path than its predecessor but its hardcore soul is intact and clearly visible. It is a ruthless, violent roguelite and embellished with a combat system of rare complexity which, after a few hours of experience and attempts, shows an incredible depth. Net of some problems mainly related to the excessive randomness of some mechanics, we are talking about a title that should not be missing in the luggage of any fan of the genre.

Like a Dragon Ishin is a must-attend event for longtime fans of Kiryu Kazuma and other yakuza legends. It is in fact an adventure full of fanservice, both in the purely playful (with the Trooper Cards) and narrative fields, restored in Unreal Engine 4 to be even more pleasant from a visual point of view. At the same time, however, various aspects of the combat system and the very structure of the game world clearly indicate the true age of production, which has its roots in an era prior to the advent of the Dragon Engine, with everything that follows. Furthermore, as pleasant as it is to explore the mid-19th century Kyo, the events narrated have some imperfections, both in terms of effectiveness and rhythm, and fail to reach the same emotional peaks of the saga's cornerstones, such as the never forgotten Yakuza Zero.

With its hybrid nature between roguelite and cozy game, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree attempts to make its mark on the gaming landscape. The high sugar content may prove indigestible to those who don't like a certain Japanese animation style. Those who embrace its philosophy, however, will find a choral adventure, rich in personality and heart. It never achieves excellence, but it remains a light and satisfying journey, capable of entertaining for many hours without ever becoming overly punishing. There's still work to be done. The dual-character system is a great idea but still feels immature, while the evident repetitiveness of the bosses and arenas may bore some. On the scenic front, The Callisto Protocol hits the bull's-eye with a first-rate, forward-looking visual presentation, and with a long series of intense encounters with horrific monstrosities, which react credibly to the electric baton blasts that hit them. Alternating body to body shooting or the use of the gravitational glove can give real adrenaline rushes but not the tension that many expected. From the progression at times not very stimulating, up to some playful imbalances, which emerge above all in the course of specific boss fights, this horror-tinged action is certainly a "good first" for Striking Distance Studios but, also thanks to a problematic narrative sector, it failed to express - sadly - its full potential.

It is a work that thrives on illusions, which often changes appearance, which suggests playful stimuli and then moves elsewhere, in a schizophrenia that deceives but involves. It is a cruel game, narratively imperfect, and at the same time quite courageous, as well as not very lenient towards the (very difficult and very delicate) subject it deals with. Crimson Desert is certainly neither a masterpiece nor a total disaster; rather, it is the outcome of an evolutionary trajectory with excellent potential—albeit one undermined by a creative direction that compromised part of its final execution. It is a product evidently diminished by the creative metamorphosis it underwent during development, yet one whose immense scope remains palpable thanks to one of the finest implementations of the open-world structure in recent memory, a generous wealth of content, and technical execution of the highest caliber. As it currently stands, we cannot give it top marks; however, there is a concrete possibility that the project's stewards—who have proven surprisingly swift in responding to community feedback—will succeed in resolving many of its most glaring flaws. Should that happen, we could well be looking at a result of an entirely different caliber.

13 years after its debut, Bravely Default remains an extraordinary JRPG in every way, as well as a title that any fan of the genre should jealously guard in their collection. That said, the remaster churned out by Cattle Call does not really add anything indispensable to the original experience, except for some necessary adjustments to the "quality of life"; indeed, paradoxically the re-release locks down key mechanics that were once available from the first hours behind two new and damned repetitive mini-games. If you do not have a Nintendo 3DS and are not the least bit interested in getting one, the remaster could be a good opportunity to bring home one of the best JRPGs of the modern era. However, we remain of the opinion that the combo formed by the Nintendo 3DS version and its equally enjoyable direct sequel (which expanded and concluded the story), played strictly on the original hardware and therefore on two screens as it was originally intended, is still the best way to explore Luxendarc and experience the great adventure of the Warriors of Light in its entirety.

The narration will satisfy the fans of Isaac Asimov's great science fiction, with suggestions of a religious nature that recall the works of Roger Zelazny and Philip Kindred Dick; the possibilities for in-depth analysis offered by the documents then recall works such as The Talos Principle (2014). There remain some small regrets: we would have liked a greater characterization of the inhabitants, robotic and otherwise, of the planet Aryish, and on some occasions the lack of variety of enemies leaves room for a small dose of monotony. Where Winds Meet is a decidedly atypical free-to-play game, which, unlike many of its counterparts, has embraced a philosophy devoid of any pay-to-win mechanics. Not only does this system work, but it is also supported by a combat system and exploration that do their job well and are enjoyable, regardless of whether you decide to play alone or with other users. The only real flaw in this production remains the menus, whose complexity is excessive and could discourage many players who, without this kind of defect, could enjoy the wuxia adventure much more.
