Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a roguelike where the more you play it, the better it gets. With so much variety in its combat thanks to an awesome cast of characters and flashy unlockable spells, those who love to experiment will be downright hooked.

The magic works over time, thanks to the regular additions and new features and the rich, comprehensive gameplay: while Towa is fairly classic in its construction, it is in its form that it stands out from its competitors. And what about the unexpected cooperation aspect?

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a great example of a game that might be inspired by something else but nonetheless manages to be darn fun on its own. It's easy to write it off as a Hades knockoff, but there's enough fun in this game to enjoy it on its own merits. The core mechanics can occasionally be a touch awkward, and the narrative never really grabbed me, but the moment-to-moment gameplay was plenty of fun. If you're looking for a different flavor of action-RPG adventure, Towa hits the mark.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is an exciting roguelite action game filled with flashy spells, sword combos, and diverse characters brought to life with strong voice acting. Its colorful maps and fast-paced battles are enjoyable, but the game clearly isn’t built for two players; most mechanics fall on one person, leaving the other with little to do. Heavy reliance on luck and random card draws, along with a confusing upgrade system, hold it back. In the end, it’s a fast and stylish single-player roguelite that struggles to leave a lasting impression.

Despite its shortcomings, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree manages to stand out among roguelike games thanks to its visuals, combat, and progression.

The most heart-wrenching aspect of Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree comes when you successfully complete a run. You’ll have to sacrifice whichever character you designated as your Kagura, and seeing your eight dear friends slowly disappear one by one actually hits hard. The theme of sacrifice is strongly woven into the narrative of this game, and it’s probably the most powerful thing about it. If more of the game’s beats hits as hard as this one, it would be easier to recommend. Ultimately, this is just another decent roguelite action game, albeit one with a couple of interesting ideas and a lot of personality.

It's visually pleasing and fun to play in short bursts, but it's not much more than that, and since Hades II is only a week away, this doesn't feel particularly important to check out in the grand scheme of things.
