The world hangs in the balance as the evil Magatsu threatens the land with just the young priestess Towa and her eight companions standing in his way.

TOWA AND THE GUARDIANS OF THE SACRED TREE features engaging game play with fast-paced action, gorgeous characters in a hand-drawn style and stunning scenery reminiscing of the warmth of Japanese ink painting, and a unique soundtrack by composer Hitoshi Sakimoto.
Players choose two Guardians to venture on each quest - one guardian wields the power of the sacred sword called Tsurugi and the other is the bearer of the magical staff Kagura. Each guardian has unique skillsets that can be unlocked and upgraded both inside the dungeons and through a meta-progression in the hub world of Shinju Village.
As the guardians pursue their quests across different timelines, the village will evolve over the years. Players develop unique bonds with residents and learn more about their customs and stories that are woven into the inner workings of the village. Ultimately, they must fight together through these colorful lands, conquer dungeons, and defeat Magatsu’s minions to restore peace to the land.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree proves to be a very interesting project full of surprises, both in terms of gameplay and narrative. Many elements are blended together in a surprisingly well-balanced mix of combat, story development, and progression system, though a few compromises are present.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is an isometric hack-and-slash roguelite that combines frenetic combat with strategic party management. The nine selectable characters have different styles that recall RPG archetypes such as tanks, rangers, or AoE mages, although the latter have a significant advantage. The weapon system relies on two interchangeable blades, subject to wear, and the Fury attack, a special attack unlocked by charging mana. Common enemies serve as a prelude to imposing bosses, while between runs, you can spend time in the village on activities that offer permanent buffs and encourage a constant growth cycle.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree manages to combine emotion and strategy in a unique experience. Its deep narrative and the dilemmas posed by the sacrifice system give real weight to the player's decisions, while the variety of combinations between Tsurugi and Kagura keeps the combat dynamic and interesting. The evolution of the Shinju village complements the gameplay well, offering moments of respite between battles in what is one of the most remarkable experiences of the genre in 2025.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree** softens the roguelite formula with stage-by-stage saves, a village hub for forging and upgrades, and clear reward previews, all wrapped in an anime-inspired presentation. Hitoshi Sakimoto’s score elevates boss fights, and the partner support system adds a smart twist, yet thin character appeal, overlapping Guardian kits, modest visuals, and the absence of Brazilian Portuguese localization hold it back. Accessible for players tired of harsher roguelikes, a solid mid-scale experiment that would benefit from more variety and personality.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree looks stylish and atmospheric, but the repetitive combat and slow pacing hold it back. Fans of Japanese mythology may find charm here, though those seeking depth will be disappointed.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree has some big ideas that never feel fully fleshed out. This game screams “potential,” but the only aspect that really sticks the landing is the town and inhabitants changing as time moves on. I enjoyed witnessing growth, stagnation, and death. The writers have poignant stories to tell and that is TGST’s best quality. Unfortunately, a commendable combat design that runs out of ideas and creativity quickly languishes the entire experience as I, unfortunately, was eager for the developers to wrap things up.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree really does have some strong arguments at the end of its staff. Its duo system allows it to offer both engaging gameplay and enjoyable stories. On top of that, the woodblock print style gives it undeniable charm. And we have to add the developers’ great generosity. On paper, then, there’s no reason to be bored with the new game from Brownies and Bandai Namco. But between theory and practice, there is sometimes a gulf. The beauty of Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree unfortunately fades as the hours go by. It scatters, sometimes loses itself, and leaves us with the impression of gorging on content without managing to fully appreciate it. By trying too hard to be on all fronts, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree gradually drifts away from the innovative and delightful experience it could have been. The game certainly has potential, but it lacks the guardians to raise it among the sacred games.
