The controls make me question the future of such extraordinary titles on iOS devices. Rockstar Games has clearly done everything possible to make them work but there's still that sense that this would all be so much easier with a physical controller.

ZX Spectrum: Elite Collection might be a hard sell to those who have never played on a Spectrum or other 8 bit computer before. For those who have though, it's an ideal walk down memory lane and really reinforces how far technology has come.

Cows vs. Aliens does exactly what a casual iPhone game does best. It's very simple to get into but it'll keep you playing for longer than you'd expect of such a basic idea.

SteamBirds, from the makers of Canabalt, is fun for a time, but doesn't do enough to earn a spot with the App Store elite.

Quite fun at times, but its controls can make the game more frustrating than it ought to be. Still, if you love retro-inspired games, and especially the Llamatron and Robotron games, or just want something a little different from the typical arena shooter, Minotron: 2112 is a solid purchase – and at worst, it's interesting reading material.

A simple idea but it's compelling fun. Rushing up through the elevator shaft brings with it just the right level of tension without being infuriating.

It is an addictive, casual experience that lends itself to short bursts of portable gaming bliss.

While slinging Blobster around the game's levels, watching him bounce all over the place, it really feels like one's playing with a toy, rather than simply controlling another video game character. This is what makes Blobster a unique, stand-out platformer.

Fling a Thing manages to combine flinging physics, arcade tomfoolery and just a hint of virtual pet with surprising success.

While I actually prefer Bird Zapper's gameplay, Bug Assault has a fair bit to recommend it especially the unusual control mechanic. It's a solid pick, particularly for households with young gamers.

Fish Heroes won't win prizes for originality but it maintains a fun edge and it's consistently satisfying clearing a level with few fish. It's a great one to drop in on regularly to chip away at those 3 star scores.

Cthulhu Saves The World is a must-play for any RPG fans and fans of 16-bit games, who will get a kick out of its crazy story, humorous writing, loving parody of the genre, and even its challenge.

Jurassic Park Builder may not be a super deep simulation with tons of factors to micromanage, but it is a well-made freemium simulation that's far less restrictive than many of its peers. Plus it's dinosaurs. Dinosaurs, people.

It might feel like something of a waste for a little while, but stick with it. Once that slow start is finished it gets a lot more fun.

Topia World Builder is a game for those that want to play with a world of their own, that find joy in the process of creation rather than the structure or the output of the activity.

Simple to look at and play, Dots is a rather fun game about connecting as many dots as possible within a short period of time.
