My usual excuse if comic book movies end up being meh is that the writers had no choice but to follow similar stories to the comics and that restrained them

Yet, cheetah and Lord Maxwell’s origin stories are in no way similar than theirs in the comics.
But I guess the writers were forced to find a way to bring cheetah’s and Maxwell’s origin stories together with some sort of element that wouldn’t necessitate any strong comic book knowledge for viewers that aren’t very familiar with the DC world. And that element the “Dreamstone”
And I do enjoy the Dreamstone and it’s place in the story. I definitely thought the narrative that we should sometimes just let some things go was good.

Despite the odd pacing and lack of action which is extremely difficult to ignore, the movie was OK, but definitely not better than the first one

Miscellaneous:

• impressed by Kristen Wiig’s performance • some people were trying to find a parallel between Lord Maxwell and Trump, I don’t think there was any, a failing businessman with blond hair doesn’t mean there’s any direct link, it’s not that hard to find that in movies
• The whole 80s nostalgia element was sufficient, people are sincerely complaining that there wasn’t enough and I don’t get why

This was a great movie and a great addition to the DC movie universe. At this point Wonder Woman might be the best realized of the movie universe characters.

This narrative basket-case lurches unevenly from one incoherent plot idea to the next without much hope of weaving the individual elements into any particular story, and not even Gal Gadot's gigawatt screen presence, physical acting chops, and the occasional franchise fan-service can rescue it. In the first movie, WW's final battle was against a literal god of war; this time around, her greatest opponent is both figuratively and literally a sad-faced cat lady, oh and human nature: from start to finish, the be-careful-what-you-wish-for trope is beaten into the audience with the heaviest hand imaginable. Whether it's teenage Diana cheating at Themyscira Ninja Warrior, or Pedro Pascal's Faust deciding what he really wanted was Mephistopheles's job, not even the hardest of thinking would miss the central (and only) lesson of this story. The rest of us might miss any semblance of philosophical ambiguity, nuanced allegory, or even simple character development and world-building; all things the first WW film delivered in spades.

Chris Pine is once again an entirely superfluous relic of Hollywood's infantile fear of letting a woman carry a film without an alpha male to remind her who she really is. This time around, though, he's looking a lot more like someone's tired dad than any kind of dashing-aviator-spy eye candy. And one with terrible taste in planes, choosing to nick a retired Tornado from IWM Duxford that's probably only held together with gaffer tape, when they've got a damn Blackbird sitting in the corner, and which he then flies himself with dreadful airmanship and total disregard for other airspace users. It's all especially galling given the subtle commentary intended by the original "invisible jet" with regard to roles expected of women.

The cat lady battle, overwrought moralizing, and the unnecessary Chris's poor choice of airborne metaphor, aren't even the worst of the creative decisions; dumping the awesome character theme from the first film is our household's consensus pick for the single most disappointing production blunder, leaving this effort a forgettable sonic squib by comparison.

Truly underwhelming stuff. I fervently hope that the showrunners do not squander the potential of the character, the acting range of their cast, or the intelligence of their audience so comprehensively next time around.

ThereI gave the movie one point because I thought Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal were acting the crap out of this movie, but it couldn't save the horrible script. First off, the plot is ridiculous, even more than a normal superhero movie. There were stupid plot holes and "rules" for everyone's abilities that were flat out ignored or changed when it suited the necessity to make things blow up. The action sequences had laughable CGI. The trailer made it seem like there would be 80s-type nostalgia, but there really wasn't anything to make it "80s." This could have taken place in the 90s or 2000s. This was a total dumpster fire of a movie. Even with it being "free" on HBO Max, it's a waste of time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Does it become a "Superhero" movie just because it is full of action scenes through the entire running time? Can't a Superhero be emotional? Don't they have emotions? I think this movie has figured out an entirely different angle of the so called Superhero genre.

Firstly, don't expect that all Superhero movies to be filled with fighting and action. The first Wonder Woman movie which came out in 2017 talked about the birth of this legendary heroine. Who she was, what her powers were, trying to figure out the outside world filled with men whom she had never met. However in the end, we do not get to meet the powerful and emotionally strong wonder woman. Instead, we are left with an emotionally broken women who lost her one love which had her connected to the world.

Wonder woman 1984 continues from the point where the first movie ended. It has been sixty years since her beloveds death. As she is immortal, all her previous mortal friends have died. She has learnt much about the world. The uncertainty of all things. Still she grieves for her love and still she is emotionally broken. The film captures more of Diana Prince than Wonder women and her emotional journey. The struggle she goes through to live the hard times. She cannot return to Themyscira because of her mothers law and so she chooses to live alone without any connections or friends in fear of losing them once again. The music gives her loneliness out loud.

So with the dreamstone, she wishes what she had always wanted. However the wish comes with a price. Her powers are reduced and she cannot even take a bullet. Yet she is not willing to give up on Steve. The film captures Dianas emotions as she becomes happier like old times. But with time she realizes she has to let go. She learns the lesson of letting go. She teaches us the lesson of letting go. But not with some action scenes if that was what you were hoping for. Wonder Woman comes out of her hidden self once more full and stronger. At the end of the film, Diana overcomes her emotional struggle which she had been fighting for over sixty years and starts her journey to become the wonder woman who we see in BvS.

Some say WW84 is overindulgent or cliché. Does it become overindulgent because Diana tries to enjoy her lovers company after hurting herself for almost sixty years? And cliche because this type of emotional superhero movie exists? And for those who say this film is very colourful, of course it should be. What is the point of making a movie of 1980s if it ain't no colourful or vibrant? Think before you say something. Overall I think this movie has broken its boundaries and made one hell of a ride in Dianas journey on becoming our beloved Wonder Woman.

Gal Gadot was great as WW in the first movie, here she seems to be going through the motions for the most part, with only a couple of standout emotional moments.
IMHO, what makes this movie just barely above average is Pedro Pascal, with the best character arc in the movie and a scene stealing performance, he was the only reason I didn’t turn off the movie.

Good balance between dialogue and action. A few really lovely effects shots.

Diana seems to weigh nothing, floating through the air and landing lightly when she wants to. Most of the plot points come without motivation or setup. Just idea > payoff. Again and again, so it lacks depth.

The trailer pretty much shows the entire movie, so if you want to you could watch that and call it a day, but I'd say watch it and don't think too hard. It will not reward you for deep thinking.

Events and character choices don't connect or make sense. Wonder Woman (who barely appears - it's Diana 1984 really) is the least interesting character in the film which is a problem. Gadot has a winning smile but reads her lines rather than acts and does the godawful 'head shake' to express emotion. There's a degree of forced diversity (in supporting characters) and 'Men are bad, m'kay?' which is at odds with this potboiler's largely ignored stab at a theme (truth before all else) expressed by the excellent Robin Wright who, as in the first film, is the best thing in this outing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie WW84 compares to Superman 3 & 4 bundled together, since it’s a long and boring 2.5 hrs movie with no substance, no storyline, no bad guys to make it worthwhile. If I had gone to see this in theatres, I would have walked out well before it was over. Keep in mind JL is from present time but the very first WW is from World War I, when Diana rescued US pilot Captain Steve Trevor crashing off the Themysciran coast. This second movie is from 1984. And there are no god-like evil in this made-to-tv sorta cartoonish-ness film. Just a “dream stone” that grants wishes. Diana wishes for her deceased lover, Steve Trevor, to return, causing his soul to take over another man's body. And Barbara (an insecure woman who idolizes and envies Diana) wishes to become strong like Diana. A business man Max Lord (the Mandalorian guy) wishes to become the stone to gain its power. In other words he becomes a Genie Who also can take whatever he desires in return. Sort of like the horror movie “The Wishmaster”. I think Jenkins (the director) was thinking of Donald Trump as in, what would he do if he came across a powerful stone that grants any wish. And the fact that Patty Jenkins mentioned several times this movie needed to be watched in the big screen is a joke! Compared to big blockbuster films from Bay, Nolan, Spielberg, Jackson, Lucas and Verbinski, this WW84 looks pretty cartoonishly to me. Expand

The plot revolves around *wishes* which makes the stakes super ambiguous and ridiculous. The 80's setting is largely wasted by being completely politically inert and quite regressive considering the potential of a character that is Wonder Woman. She spends the entire film just wanting to be with her dead boyfriend and is the least impactful character in her own film. This stinks of garbage old white producers refusing to allow a woman superhero movie to actually be about something or try to say something. Pedro Pascal is fun, and hams it up in every scene, but his villainous motivation is completely stupid. DC movies are all pretty bad, and this one stings harsher after the first WW being mostly okay. It's 2 hours 30 minutes and it drags every second. The CGI is really lackluster and the potential of Kristen Wiig's Cheetah is completely wasted. I’ll say it...I’m a Superhero Movie Junkie. I love them all. I think a “6” is about as low as I can go. Superhero movies are exciting, entertaining and I’m usually captivated throughout the entirety of watching one. This movie was no different, but...

The bar was high for Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot was/is an incredible Wonder Woman and overall superhero. There’s a mystery and intrigue of this character that always has me on the edge of my seat. The intrigue was there for Wonder Woman the character, but lost on the movie. I actually enjoyed all of the performances of this movie. Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Chris Pine are each exceptional in their own right. The storyline is where the mark was missed. The opening scene of the movie was a throwback to Dianna’s youth. The scene was awesome, but the connection of that scene to the rest of the movie was lost. You could maybe make a far reach of how Dianna had to... no... no you can’t. It was lost.

As the movie gets going you quickly learn Wiig and Pascal’s motivation for their characters. The two actually want the same thing (to feel important and to have more “x”), but Pascal’s character takes the biggest leap to attain it. The beginning and middle of this movie are excellent. The story line is presented, the obstacles are unfolding and even Chris Pine’s resurrection of character makes some sense. The end of the movie, however, really loses its luster. The reason for Pascal’s villainous demise was completely lost on me. A cheap pep rally from Wonder Woman seemed to turn the tide (I suppose the son’s wish could have been the reason, but it never seemed like that was the case). The final 20-25 minutes seemed very rah-rah and not from the typical superhero way you would expect. In this film, the inevitability that good always “beats” evil prevailed because good is just better morally than evil and not because of any stereotypical fight scene. While I’ll concede that this may be a movie that 2020 needed, it seemed like the type of movie that 10 years from now we will look back on and say, “That movie started really great, but what the heck happened in the end?”

As for the action? I can't decide if it compares better to Superman 3 or Superman 4, but its right at those levels of hilarious cartoonish-ness. After the first 30 minutes, you will be checking the timer over and over to see how much of the movie is left, and by the time the never-ending climax rolls around you'll be begging for someone to put you out of your misery. I gave it 2 points for Gal Gadot's occasional smile into the camera, otherwise AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Expand

We last saw Wonder Woman during WWI and now fast forward to the 1980s Wonder Woman is back on the big screen facing two brand new enemies Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) and The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) now working in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. comes across a mysterious stone with the ability to apparently grant wishes to anyone holding it. The stone seems ordinary enough to everyone except of course the power-crazed Max Lord. Fear not as Wonder Woman is safely back in the hands of director Patty Jenkins, and beautifully accompanied by another stunning Hans Zimmer score. Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig are great additions to the cast, both making believable villains with clear motivations. Pascal particularly is stealing the spotlight and doing some real scenery chewing any chance he gets. Look, it’s not perfect and it has its issues, most of which you can overlook. I did feel it was missing an action sequence and it’s a little disjointed in places but despite that I enjoyed seeing Gal Gadot kick ass on the big screen again. Wonder Woman 1984 is a bright burst of 80s nostalgia with an old school superhero feel to it.

The days of sitting in a packed cinema are long gone and it’s uncertain when we’ll ever get back to that but right now the cinemas are open and operating safely so when you’re ready to get back in front of the silver screen again Wonder Woman 1984 is waiting for you, although depending on where you live you might want to hurry up and see it quick. Recommended for all you film buffs out there.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is bland, too long, and doesn't make sense. It's sad to see the franchise go from an amazing first film to an incoherent unexplained mess for the second.

The McGuffin of this movie is a rock, that grants wishes. There is nothing else to it. We don't get a revelation scene where Diana figure that out properly. We get a scene where she visits a crazy person who is a Mayan, and Diana just... Believes him? Her wish and desire to go back on that wish is out of character. Diana would have immediately retracted her wish as soon as she knew it was destroying her and the world.

The plot is painfully predictable. Even my Fiancee who actively chooses not to think ahead in movies and take them at face value was ripping this movie apart for this very straightforward no risks taken plot. She even predicted at the very beginning that the ending would be a 'zero-sum' of everything that happened.

Moving onto the CGI, whilst the underused Kristen Wigg's final Cheeta look was great, it was absolutely destroyed by the rest of the movie with poor physics and HORRIBLE animation on Gal Godot's Wonder Woman.

How disappointing. No wonder this movie was so quick to streaming, instead of waiting for a full theatrical release. I think the studio knew it would be met with this response.

4.5/10.

It is by far the most ridiculous superhero movie I've ever witnessed and my first "zero" I've awarded to any movie on Metacritic. This thing doesn't even follow basic logic. Characters instantly have complex abilities and knowledge such as one character who is a stick and rudder pilot who somehow instantly can fly highly complex jets. Diana is now endowed with every ability of literally every superhero in the DC universe. Superman flight - check, immune to bullets - check (no need for the wrist bands anymore, just impervious), instant unlimited invisibility - check and so on. In addition Diana's rope is now endowed with literally all the powers of Thors hammer - and more. What's worse is almost every male character in this movie is either a moron, tyrant, sexist, pervert or worse. Just imagine for a moment how a man hating zealot might perceive the male gender - well this movie repeatedly, over and over and over highlights every negative male stereotype. The team that put together this trainwreck should never be allowed to make movies again. They literally dump on 90% of the audience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wonder Woman 1984 was terrific. Gal Gadot's performance was exceptional she gives such an emotionally powerful performance and brings so much heart and authenticity to the role, she gives one of the best performances in the DCEU. Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Chris Pine, and Lynda Carter gave outstanding supporting performances. The visual effects were phenomenal especially Cheetah. The writing was stupendous, it was so emotionally powerful and deep. The costumes were remarkable especially the ones wore by Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig, Lynda Carter, Connie Nielsen, and Robin Wright. The makeup and hairstyling was spectacular especially on Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Gal Gadot, Robin Wright, Lynda Carter, and Connie Nielsen. The music was splendid. This is one of my top 10 favorite movies of 2020 and it gets an A+ from me, it was just a visual treat. Expand

However, this movie is actually painful to watch in terms of everything it does bad that could have been good. There are far too many to list but in the first 10 minutes alone you will see the worst CGI of the past decade (Raimi's Spiderman was better), a weird effort to incorporate slapstick elements aimed at small children, pantomime level reaction-acting from supporting cast and extras, and for some reason Wonder Woman trying to be both Spiderman (swinging form 'webs') and Captain America (throwing her decidedly non-aerodynamic tiara). Superhero movies are supposed to be outlandish but this seems to have been made by someone who didn't grow up reading comics (including Diana's long and complex history) but rather had them explained to her by a studio executive. I was sadly very disappointed to see that Warner Brothers and DC still haven't gotten the message and continue to squander beloved characters, great casts on poorly executed and poorly written scripts and storylines. Only redeeming qualities are some well choreographed fight scenes that felt reminiscent of the first film and some of the art direction for Cheetah and Wonder Woman key scenes. Gal Gadot is still the picture esque modern Wonder Woman with a heart of gold. Everything else feels poorly pieced together and leaves you confused and left wanting something better. Some moments were almost satirical and I found myself laughing at moments that were designed to create tension (children in a road). Pedro Pascal does well working with a character whose motivations and powers grow faster than character development. Warner Brothers continues their tradition of mediocre superhero movies in a post Avengers world. That said if you are a fan of the superhero genre and already have a HBO Max account watch it with lowered expectations. Expand

Definitely enjoyed the first Wonder Woman outing and despite Gadot’s political beliefs I think she is the definitive Wonder Woman this sequel though is an absolute mess. Kristen wiig is the only real highlight of this film otherwise it legit feels like an ai generated this movie after watching all the 70s and 80s bad superman/superhero movies. I’m fine with campy but this entire movie felt bizarre like it didn’t know what it wanted to be, like it 4 different films running at the same time at such a sluggish pace while overstaying it’s welcome. Lots of weird things happen and it all feels off kilter down to the script and reactions of characters, the film never seems to understand or follow the rules of its reality. The end just happens with no real resolute or cloture just an abrupt Christmas scene that just feels ham fisted. If you’re on HBO Max you’re better off watching Birds Of Prey, definitely the best live action comic movie this year and very enjoyable. Expand

WW 1984 absolutely not unfortunately as I was really looking forward to the sequel. The biggest problem is that 1984 completely lost the soul of the first one due to all of the very disappointing over acting. Is 1984 trying to be a slapstick comedy? An anagram of 80’s bad comedy movies? There are sections that are reminiscent of the first movie but there are too many hokey parts in 1984 that makes one wonder what the director was trying to illicit. Too bad. Despite the lesson taught to me by this film, if I could get my hands on that stone, I would most fervently wish for that 2.5 hours back, regardless of the other personal cost.

The entire movie was a plot centered around Diana getting over Steve. No one faced any real consequence for their actions, and no one really changed at the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It raises more questions than it answers. Story, cinematography, audio, casting take your pick it deserves the rating. I’d like to apologize on the studios behalf to Kristen Wiig for doing this great disservice to your career. How did you come to decide that a Chilean mans son should be played by a Filipino child? Why is cheetah from cats? Wanna explain the flying via rpg? I watched this at my in-laws for free on hobo max..... I’d still like some sort of refund. Expand

Hermoso mensaje, un homenaje al cine de los 80s y a los clásicos de DC de hace algunas décadas. Emocionante, emotiva, grandes escenas de acción, personajes muy bien desarrollados, Wonder Woman nos muestra su lado más humano y personal.

The first hour was pointless and not needed. The movie was too long to have a crap ending like it did.
