Since the release of “Wonder Woman 1984” on Christmas day, I’ve largely been AFK–that’s geek speak for “Away From Keyboard”–and have no idea if it’s been getting praise from more mainstream critics. It won’t be getting any from me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 2017 installment, writing among other things:

“Hollywood finally got another superhero movie right (and it certainly took them enough tries). ‘Wonder Woman‘ strikes an impressive balance between action and comedy, and it does so in a way that is distinctly geared towards female sensibilities–a true rarity in the genre.”

The 2020 version, however, is just as disappointing as the year itself.

How writers Dave Callaham, Geoff Johns, and writer-director Patty Jenkins went from such highs to such lows is beyond my comprehension. Compared to the original, nothing in “Wonder Woman 1984” is compelling, from the storyline to the action sequences to the cinematography and beyond.

Taking just one brief burst of thirty seconds or so as a sampling, logic and continuity were repeatedly spurned as I thought to myself, “Why would a fighter jet be accessible to someone with Smithsonian clearance and just be sitting on a runway ready to go?” and “How could a World War I-era pilot possibly fly an 80s-era fighter jet?” and “Fighter jets can’t fly direct from Washington D.C. to Egypt without refueling” and “Since they just established that it happens to be the 4th of July (purely for the visuals, of course, not furthering the actual plot in ANY way) why was everyone else acting like it was a typical workday earlier?”

Again, because it bears repeating, all these complaints of mine are from a single sequence. If I were to type out everything I feel is wrong with “Wonder Woman 1984,” I’d wear out my keyboard.

The bottom line is that Jenkins & Co. seemingly got so infatuated with the idea of constructing a movie around the concept of the Monkey’s Paw that every other element had to be crowbarred into the theme, everything else be damned. It’s a shame, as the legacy of the Wonder Woman film franchise has forever been damaged by “Wonder Woman 1984,” making me wonder if Jenkins herself had previously wished upon the paw and is now paying the price.

Wonder Woman 1984 Spoiler Free Review:

Before I start this I feel the need to say that a fair bit of the criticism this film is copping is probably due to people going into it expecting a nice piece of Hollywood escapism from the **** show that is 2020. But instead, we got a story that was an attempt to say something about the times we lived in before Covid (despite popular belief blockbuster films featuring a little social commentary not just action sequences are hardly a new thing)

So the themes of greed, excess and putting our own needs and desires above others as well as the greater good featured in the film just don’t hit home the same way as it would have.

However, at the same time some of the criticism is well founded. The plot is a bit long winded and honestly the kind of stuff the filmmakers wanted to say could have been said in a far less roundabout way. I fear perhaps the filmmakers and the studio added so much filler that added nothing to the story in order to try and avoid backlash from the “STOP LECTURING US AND JUST BLOW STUFF UP” crowd.

The character motivations and arks in the film (outside of Max Lord) also felt a little underdeveloped and the way Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman behaves like a lovesick women unable to function without the man she was in love with comes off as kind of pathetic. If they were trying to sell it as undying love they pretty much failed. It doesn’t exactly scream girl power!

The way they set up Steve Trevor’s return as well as the plot device to sell the films themes seems a bit lazy. But I guess they were just going for a good old fashioned MacGuffin fuelled adventure.

However, with all that being said there is still PLENTY of things to like about the film. The acting performances are all pretty good.
Gal Gadot proves once again that she was the perfect choice to play Wonder Woman. Chris Pine is as charming as ever as Steve Trevor and his fish out of water routine proves to be just as funny as Gal Gadot’s from the first film.

Pedro Pascal does a great job with the character of Max Lord turning him into a more sympathetic villain. Ditto for Kristin Wigg who was everyone’s last choice to play Cheetah. In fact, it seems like the Director Patty Jenkins was trying to pull a page out of the book of Tim Burton Batman films by focusing on the villains and how they become evil. I quite enjoyed that.

There is also some pretty cool action sequences in the film despite some saying there wasn’t enough. But like the first film...the CGI was pretty bad.

All in all, while far from a bad movie it definitely doesn’t reach the same heights as the first Wonder Woman film. But I still think it’s a perfectly enjoyable popcorn flick all things considered.

WW98 is soo good on soo many levels. The characters are not only cool but absolutely believable and have real motivations. The story has a fair amount of strings which all come beautifully together without being overly confusing. All that is interleaved with amazing action sequences. Honestly, what can you want more?

The action was pretty good, but I did feel like a certain fight near the end could have been longer. I thought all the characters were pretty good but the standout is Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord. He felt menacing while also being an interesting character. With all that being said there are some flaws. After you watch the movie you will have questions about things that were never explained, or you may feel bored during the first 30 minutes. This movie doesn't feel original as well. It just feels like another crammed out superhero movie we will forget about in a couple of days. Overall I really enjoyed myself while watching this movie but I can't deny that it has some flaws. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't believe the same director and many of the same writers that made the first movie made this garbage. I think this may be the single worst DC live action movie that has been made. The characters and the plot seem like they're taken directly from a teenagers fan fiction rather than from real Hollywood writers.

Every character in this movie is a terrible human being except Chris Pine's character (kinda) and the son of the main villain. Everyone. Is Diana or another woman walking down the street? Every single man they pass will start sexually harassing them. I was a police officer for nearly a decade. I know full well these types of guys exist and are more common than they should be. They're still a small percentage of people though, and Hollywood's insistence on portraying all men as evil is just getting old.

*****spoilers from here on*****

The plot holes in the movie are hard to get past. They're so obvious they completely ruin the movie. Diana's powers are extremely inconsistent as well. When she's fighting the convoy she has the strength to push a huge truck sideways at extremely high speeds down the highway. Then a few minutes later while hanging off the side of a truck, Diana can't kick a truck to crush her over and just gives up, willing to be crushed to death. Kicking that truck over should be 100x easier than what she JUST did, or she could at just flip up onto the top of the truck she's hanging from. Diana's choice in this scene is just bizarre. Later in the movie the main villain starts granting wishes to everyone. These wishes are cursed and can be renounced. Diana's plan is to broadcast to the world (magically I guess, since she JUST destroyed the camera equipment) is to appeal to everyone's humanity to renounce their wishes. If this movie wasn't written by idiots, they would have had all wishes reversed when the main villain eventually reversed his. But no, people kept renouncing after that. What kind of naive writer thinks all those people are going to renounce their wishes? No, human beings aren't nearly that altruistic. Millions of people would think, that's for everyone else. It wouldn't hurt if I kept mine. I mean, Diana just physically fought her friend over this exact issue! On top of this, the reversals are very inconsistent. Some areas are still super trashed, while some areas are magically fixed. Worse, some actions not even connected to wishes were reversed.

Then there's the ending, where Diana meets the man she was willing to erase from existence so her boyfriend could live again. What does she do? She flirts with him! What a psychopath! This doesn't even cover all of the plot holes I found, much less the ones I read about online after watching it. I'm just tired of wasting any more of my time than I already have on this terrible movie. I truly hope the writers put SOME effort into writing a decent script for the third movie. What a disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really Sad about! WHAT A DISASTER. It's no wonder they turned this loose for free on HBO. It's the perfect combination of "fall asleep" boredom, "laugh out loud" stupidity, and "check your phone as a distraction" cringe. As for the action? I can't decide if it compares better to Superman 3 or Superman 4, but its right at those levels of hilarious cartoonish-ness. After the first 30 minutes, you will be checking the timer over and over to see how much of the movie is left, and by the time the never-ending climax rolls around you'll be begging for someone to put you out of your misery. Con: The story has so many holes. Poor script, poor acting by Gal; not a fan. Too long. The story and action is more fitting for a cartoon than an action movie. 2 hours of my like I will never get back.

It started a bit goofy, and I can accept that. Go the comic book route and have some fun with it. However, I realized it was not an attempt to style the movie, it was just goofy.

It has a good professional finish. But the choices all seem to revolve around WW's need to get screwed. So much for the feminist, the strength, the role model that WW stands for....

Which is how I feel paying to see it, I feel like I got screwed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a big fan of superhero movies and I generally like all of them. You may call me a fanboy. I can turn off my brain and I just want to watch something fun. The reason I like these movies is because superheroes have superpowers and they can perform extraordinary feats the average action movie hero can't, such as using a magical lasso to grab onto a **** lightning bolt to propel yourself into the sky. I loved that **** I've never seen something like that. That's the kind of stuff I expect from superhero movies. Diana also uses her lasso to catch a bullet and save Steve, which was also very cool.

So I'm willing to overlook things like bad writing and bad CGI if I get interesting and satisfying action scenes. Overall, I think Wonder Woman 1984 is an OK movie. But my biggest gripe with it is that it just doesn't have enough action in it. Seriously, it's two and a half hours long, we get the athletic competion and the mall robbery scenes in the beginning, and then we don't get another proper action scene until an hour later! Granted, that is the best and longest action sequence in movie. "It was well worth the wait", I told myself when I got to that scene. And the thing is, the exposition scenes before it aren't even that bad. I wasn't bored, but I just wanted more action. It's a two and a half hour long movie. The pacing gets better after that, though.

Aside from the action, I also liked the characters. I'm a big fan of Pedro Pascal and I think Maxwell was an interesting and whacky villain. I liked seeing him on the screen and he gets a bit humanized at the end. I was also a fan of the "a wish comes true, but with a negative twist" idea.

I liked Cheetah, too, but there just wasn't enough of her. Again, it's a two and a half hour long movie and we only get like two action scenes with her. And only one with her in her full form. It was one of the best action scenes, though.

Also, the Lynda Carter cameo at the end was pretty cool.

All in all, I think it's an acceptable movie. I just wanted more action. I can see why some people didn't like it, but some seem to be very uncharitable to it and determined to tear it apart.

Film is boring, I barely watched it all in one go (2h30min). Do not live up to the original one in any way. Story is boring, convoluted and not interesting. 1984 vibe is only felt in the beginning (mall scene). - and that is all I have to say about the movie itself. I'm not giving it lower score because of actors, they definitely tried... Pine and Gadot duo is fantastic but still lacking something from the original, Pascal acting too is not that bad, but it is too little to safe entire movie. Rest of the cast is just forgettable. Film only for hardcore fans.

Bad CGI, Terrible story, A villain who shows up in the last 3rd of the movie and then goes away quickly.

But it's not just bad. It's actually morally and emotionally reprehensible.
So (Spoilers)

I would remind everyone who just watched this movie, that we have a woman who has been unable to move past the death of a person for almost 75 years. (Like a child) And then just wishes her dead boyfriend replace another guy in his body. not caring what happened to the other guy's consciousness or soul. (Like a Sociopath) And in fact, using the guy's body to have sex with her dead boyfriend.... (Like a rapist)

Seriously I have no idea how this made it out the door.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. WW84 is a very underwhelming movie compared to it's predecessor.
Let's start with the good parts:
-Gal Gadot is still great as Diana and her chemistry with Kristen Wiig is also great.
-The scene where she and Steve say their last goodbye is very emotional and well crafted.
- Cheetah's character arc was quite good - The ending is not a cliché

Now, to the not so good parts:
- The pacing. The first half of the movie is really slow and suffers from scenes that could've accomplished the same while being much shorter. Also, a lot of filler
- Maxwell Lord is too over the top to be an effective villain. I'm gonna blame Jenkins for this since we've seen Pedro Pascal can be quite subtle when it's needed. The attempt to satirize Trump is painfully obvious and is quite boring to anyone not living in the US.
- As good as Barbara's character arc was, she's completely sidelined.
- There's not enough importanche given to the fact that Steve is hijacking an stranger's body. What Diana and him do to that man is rape and it's not acknowledge anywhere in the film.
- Diana's power loss is all over the place and seems to disappear whenever the script needs it to, also she get's new powers when she's supposed to be losing them
- The CGI is subpar, given the ammount of time they had to improve it whit so many delays, it's unforgivable. Cheetah did look good though.
- The "monkey paw" storyline is overdone by this point, and this take on the trope brings nothing new to the table.
- Where are the stakes ? The whole conflict could be undone with wishing it (or not wishing it) away
- In several scenes, Diana is written completely out of character
- Opening scene completely and openly contradicts the first film
- Even if the ending is original, it's completely anticlimatic
- The movie is unnecessarily long

Overall, a dissapointing entry to the DCEU.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What I didn't like was the fact that they bring Steve back as a spirit that possesses some random guy's body, and that Diana and Steve, while possessing this man's body, are not only in this man's home, and trying on his clothes, but she has sex with this possessed man in his bed. If this wish stone made other people's wishes come true, and created giant walls and made other things materialize, then why didn't they just bring Steve back in his own body? Why did he have to take over this random man's life, who basically has no say in the matter? I'll bet you if the roles were reversed, and Batman or Superman wished for a dead lover to come back, and it possessed some random woman's body, and they had a scene with them waking up together in bed, that there would have been an uproar, because isn't that considered rape? Having sex with someone who's drunk or drugged, and not in control of their body or able to give consent, isn't that considered rape? And in the remainder of the movie this man, who is possessed by the spirit of Steve Trevor, is put into various perilous situations and even shot at and I don't think that's cool. Plus, I thought you only get one wish, so why did Barbara get two wishes? Her first wish to become like Diana, then the second wish to become an apex predator/Cheetah? That completely contradicts what we were told in the beginning of the movie. And why are all the men portrayed as catcalling jerks (i.e., except for Steve Trevor)? And why is there a little boy just roaming around unattended in various offices and facilities, and in the one of the last scene's he's stranded and walking alone on a stretch of highway, and at the end comes running out of the woods by himself? Where's his mother or guardian? Also, how does a man (Steve Trevor) who only flew planes in the 1940's able to fly a military jet that has 1980's technology? I think there are too many plot holes and things that make no sense, and that are just wrong and cringeworthy, especially the fact that a superhero has sex with a non-consenting possessed man. That's just wrong on so many levels and this movie is just wrong on so many levels. Expand

1) Jeez DC you're better than this..this is NOT gonna help you on the "MARVEL Vs DC SCOREBOARD"
2) I am I being unfair? This IS a comic book movie.."suspension of disbelief" is necessary for any movie like this..right? BUT THIS MUCH?!
3) Thank God I didn't waste my time and money going to see THIS in the theatre I'm gonna give this a (very generous) 5..cuz I think I now understand the intended audience for this..which I can only imagine is elementary school girls..little girls obviously because the message is clear..today a woman can be anything..strong, smart, beautiful and the "hero". Instead of wanting around to be saved by men..Wonder Woman can be the savior all by herself. Nevermind that everyone from Disney to James Cameron has been trumpeting this same message..yet doing so in a way that doesn't insult one's intelligence. If it wasn't for the fact that I was watching it with my now teen daughter who saw the original a few years back and loved it..I think I would've turned it off right about the time a WWI Bi-plane pilot knew how to instinctively fly a modern jet that despite somehow being a museum piece was fully fueled, primed and prepped to make a non stop flight to Eqypt (that fact that it was able to turn invisible soon after takeoff seems almost plausible by comparison).
