Spectacular, it is magical, it is not directed only for fans but for all types of audiences, faithful adaptation to the original work, they did not change anything. As a gamer veteran with no kids of mine in the movie I really enjoyed it.
The movie manages to address the entire age range of viewers almost evenly.

Story 6/10: The story was probably constructed to show many of the very memorable settings of mario games which worked in my opinion, even the NYC world worked in combination as well. No exceptional story but I would not expect one anyway with the given mario world ingredients (doesn't mean that it isn't possible to create an exceptional story in this world if you wanted).

Visuals: 10/10
Complete immersion in the world. Would have liked to stay somewhat longer.

Political Correctness scale:
The only role that stuck out in that sense was Peaches' role as modern girlpower-version instead of helpless princess to-be-rescued in the game. A bit too overdrawn-badass in my opinion (e.g. with the motocycle instead of a classic go-kart like everybody else).

It is very confusing why this movie got such a bad rating from critic reviews. I asked myself what the critics can possibly expect from such a movie. Obviously something very different from the people that went to watch it.… Expand

I think that this movie could've done better, but I liked a lot of it, first off, I didn't like how they spent pretty much no time at all in Brooklyn, they could've fixed a sewer pipe at a Mets game or something, but after that, I think the world building for the mushroom kingdom was pretty good, And I liked the main toad, although, I thought he didn't get enough screen time, I thought the pacing of it was very fast, which didn't give me really enough time to see the characters develop,but besides that, I thought the ending was very weird, bowser getting put into a jar was a very odd way of defeating him, and I thought maybe their could've been a less strange way, I loved Jack Black in this movie, he really carried this whole movie for me. So I liked it, but I just thought it was kinda off, It wasn't as good as puss in boots, but I think it can be compared to puss in boots as a good 2nd place.… Expand

Went in with a open mind and enjoyed it more than i thought i would. La película es muy entretenida y es bastante fiel a los propios videojuegos. Sólo las partes en donde sale Browser son las más aburridas. Le ponen cariño al producto completo, incluyendo música y personajes.

Sí que es verdad que hay pequeñas partes de pequeña violencia y Browser da miedo y se permite más violencia que en los juegos (con escenas más “oscuras”). Quizás recomendado para niños con 5 o más años. Y si puede ser con 6 o 7 mejor. A decisión de los padres, también viendo cómo es cada niño. Quedaros hasta que termine todos los créditos para ver una última secuencia.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is definitely not a 10/10 movie as a lot of people seem to be giving it and the people downvoting any review that isn't a 10/10. It seems for these people all the movie had to do was have Mario jump with the Mario jumping sound, hit a coin box with the coin sound and eat a mushroom and they would have given it a 10/10. The plot is as basic as the Mario games, Peach/Luigi gets captured by Bowser and Mario has to save them. That's it, that's the story. There's no character development. In the beginning Mario is portrayed as a failure but he never fails at anything other than the montage. He becomes an expert with every new powerup he receives within a few seconds. Peach is more perfect than Mario, beat the montage level Mario failed at first try, no development. Donkey Kong is just the jealous jerk/bully because Mario beat him.

The worst part is that they got A-lister hollywood actors that don't do voice acting. All the character voices are just the A-listers doing their regular voice. Jack Black with Bowser and Fred Armisen with Cranky Kong being the few exceptions. Seth Rogen did a huge disservice to Donkey Kong, basically just using his regular voice and laugh which is really distinct. Being a Nintendo fan that has been playing since the original playing Mario and Donkey Kong on everything from the Nintendo to gameboy to 3ds to Gamecube to the switch, characters that were given distinct and unique voices that matched their characters had hollow voice performances by actors like Seth Rogen that were just using their regular voice was very very disappointing.

This movie is just an average movie that leans heavily on the success and global recognition of Mario from the video games. Nintendo phoned this one in, of course their loyal fanbase will defend it to their dying breath with 10/10 reviews and rake in cash from the global recognition of the characters from Nintendo's video games.

It's cool Nintendo is doing movies, seems like it is something they should have done, even though their games basically have no story. Would love a Zelda movie, hopefully one that isn't just cookie cutter like this one filled with things like Link breaking pots.… Expand

Esse filme é incrível, a crítica "especializada" não sabe de nada, nem jogar video-game eles jogam!

A Peach ser uma personagem poderosa foi uma escolha muito boa porque sinceramente ia ser muito chato ver um filme do Mario salvando a princesa e blablabla. O Mario saindo de Brooklyn e indo para o mundo dos cogumelos também foi épico! Foi épico ver a família do Mario! Também temos muitas referências a Nintendo e aos jogos antigos e novos do Mario, tem até referência ao Mario Odyssey! O Donkey Kong é super carismático e o Toad apesar de não ter tanta importância na trama, não é um personagem chato e até lembrou a dublagem do desenho do Mario! O Luigi ser sequestrado coube perfeitamente na história, mas ele não foi um donzelo em perigo, porque no final ele desceu o cacete no Bowser! E o Bowser ser só um cara malvadão apaixonado foi incrível e me lembrou Mario Odyssey, (por causa do casamento inclusive).

É essa a minha review, a review de um cara de 18 anos que cresceu jogando esse jogo, e não de um crítico aleatório.… Expand

A nice story, somewhat typical and atypical at the same time.

To those of us who left adolescence behind recently or not so recently, it will surely bring us beautiful memories and at times it will extol our scenes behind the video game withA nice story, somewhat typical and atypical at the same time.

To those of us who left adolescence behind recently or not so recently, it will surely bring us beautiful memories and at times it will extol our scenes behind the video game with a somewhat dreamy air, bringing it to reality, to family life, to day to day of work and life, with its problems and joys. This mixture between the real thing and the 2d video game is a very big and pleasant plus.

Then we will move on to a fictional world, which will bring with it, in addition to a good load of memories, a large amount of adventure and action. Here, the story leaves the everyday behind and we find ourselves with adventure and more adventure, with little context, since the context is provided by the video game, it is nice to see how the characters, antagonists and main challenges of Donkey Kong and Mario, little by little are fitting into history; With pleasant surprise we see how some characters are given another meaning, an example of this: 'the princess', who little fulfills her role as a damsel in distress to become a strong and valuable character BUT, preserving all her feminine, sweet and pleasant. The main Bad guy is not so typical either, he's a love-struck bad guy and SOMETIMES kind of cute.

The ending also follows the same formula, satisfying, beautiful, with a lot of action, mixing the real world with the video game, yes, all this in a good-natured, calm environment suitable for all audiences, without being childish, however for some reason it is rated PG (with parental guidance) however I think it is more than suitable for all audiences.

I couldn't stop laughing and smiling. A real shame to see critics hate on this movie. The fan service is incredible (and maybe that's the issue?). This was a wonderful movie. Chris Pratt and Charlie day were great, before I saw that Mario wasn't voiced Charles Martinez, I was mad, but now that I see the movie, I loved it. Very short, though.

I haven't had this much fun at the theater sense I was a kid. If you like Mario you will like this film. The cast the jokes. Really strong positive messages for the youth not only showing you the error of bowsers ways but also that the real heros of today are the regular people of everyday going to work, Also how hard it can be to put yourself out there to get ahead in life. You have to remember going into the film this is for your kids but also for us with its jokes clearly targeting mature fans of the brand. Ps: DO NOT listen to reviews about how this movie is just a bunch of references in a film and that's it. They clearly do not understand how this film is simply "just not for them". This movie made me laugh and cry and I hope we get a Luigi's mansion movie after this cause my only bad thing to say about this movie is not enough Charle Day. 9.5/10… Expand

It also shows Mario as a loyal person looking out for his brother,as well as extremely resilient and determined. The voice acting is not too shabby,with Jack black being the mvp in voice acting here. Lumalee is suicidal which is rare to see in films,which intrigued me,standing out as more unique.
Cons- Bowser has a very unhealthy obesession with Princess Peach and sings a song about it. The lyrics make his crush come off very obesessive,making me wince at that as well as the off-key shouting at the end. I'm not a big fan of obesessive love,so i didn't really enjoy this part. The story is not that impressive and could be better,could use more thematic elements… Expand

10/10 absolute masterpiece, it’s one big love letter to all Mario fans, I highly recommend it, amazing references, action scenes, animation, score, characters. Go watch it.

Great movie for Mario enthusiasts, decent/okay for your random Joe. The movie is packed with references from many Mario games and some other Nintendo franchises, thus making it very appealing and interesting to the fans. A perfectly fine movie. I watched this movie with some family and friends, and while I got a lot of enjoyment as a huge Mario fan, the rest of the folks with me ended up bored. The story is minimal, and the pacing is fast. Use the bathroomA perfectly fine movie. Im a huge reference guy and this movie is a gift sent to earth by god himself.

While at times derivative, it is a fun movie with lots of great moments. Princess Peach plays a unique role in the story that felt authentic. Jack Black is great as Browser and by far the standout performance of the movie.

Amazing!!! I have seen it 3 times. Love all the references to Mario and DK videogames across the years. It was really fun and people constantly laughed. The voice acting was incredible. To be honest I absolutely love this movie.It have something like 1 million references to mario kart,Donkey kong games or even dr.mario.So as you can see older viewers can have so much fun watching this movie, but what about kids? In my opinion with all everything in the movie and all the Easter eggs plus the music references basically gives you about 500+ and just movie in general is a 10/10. The only real problems are the licensed tracks “Holding out for a Hero” and “Take on Me”.

I'm giving this a 10 not only because like I said, even if Mario and Luigi doesn't really speak too Italian enough, there's no woke stuff here, and aside from that, it also it produced such a really decent action from donkey kong, the final battle, lots of cameo appearances from some other characters related to Mario. We also have that really iconic Peaches song in here that became a meme material and it definitely is holding up. I dunno about you but you should watch this than the newer 2021-2023 movies that one particular woke movie studio produces.… Expand

Once again critics don't know what the audience will like. For me it is a solid 8, if not 9. It was very entertaining, visually appealing and with some good life lessons for the kids. For a cinematic adaptation of a classic game, this is probably close to the best that could be done with it. It includes necessary references while maintaining a story of its own and fast fun visuals.

A really good movie. It has amazing animations, is full of fun, has tons of fan-service and just wants to entertain. Also Jack Blacks performance as Bowser is more than memorable. It shows that if you make what fans want and stay away from politics you get a successful movie. Atop of this it is not even anti woke. Princess Peach is a strong and independent woman without harming her character, fan expectations and the enjoyment of the movie. She is awesome. Is it perfect or an all time classic? No but it is a breath fresh air or returning to old style when Disney and Pixar are failing. The story starts with Mario and Luigi who are plumbers in Brooklyn. They risk financially everything to start their own company and are drawn into the adventure. I stop here. The story is fateful to the source material and there is so much to discover. There are tons of Easter eggs and as Mario and Nintendo fan you will be amazed. As warning: It is entertaining if you are not that familiar but is a weaker experience(Tested with a friend that is familiar with just the basics). The animations are gorgeous to watch. All characters and the world are colorful and look like you imagined it. The voice actors fuilly deliver and I praise them all. The soundtrack is full of familiar Mario themes and they use a few pop songs. Those fell a bit forced but I don’t mind. Overall this is a must see movie. It is cementing Universals victory over Disney in animated movies. They beat them in their bread and butter category. I give a 9/10 as is weaker than the best animated movies of all time. Be warned: Not sure if this is an effect like eating normal food when starving (= Taste better than everything) because the animated movies before set the bar low.… Expand

Story: [5/10] Boring and predictable. Only a few laughs. The art and animation was very well done with really great use of color and environments. The overuse of machines (karts) felt out of place for a Mario film.

After the disastrous live-action 1993’s Super Mario Bros. which led to Nintendo stopped licensing out their IPs to movie studios for movie adaptations for a long time until 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Nintendo have decided to give a second chance to have another Mario movie with this time in an animated movie.

Two Italian-American brothers, Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day), are struggling plumbers in New York trying to start their plumbing business after leaving their employer and much to their father’s disappointment. After a news reported that there is a water leak in the city, the brothers use this opportunity to fix it hoping this will boost their publicity.

When Mario and Luigi go underground to fix the water pipe, they got suck into some kind of a warping pipe where they both get separate and end up in another dimension. Mario land in Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach (Taylor-Joy) while Luigi land in Dark Lands ruled by Bowser (Black). With the help of Princess Peach, they work together and make new allies along the way not only to rescue Luigi but also to stop Bowser from using the recently stolen, Super Star, to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if Princess Peach refuse to marry him.

If you ever think for one second that this movie will be like its live-action counterpart, you are totally wrong. This is movie is so super (pun intended) better. Not only the movie is fun and have many funny moments, this movie is faithful to the source material even with some deviations unlike the live-action movie. The voice acting performed by the cast is great in this movie especially Chris Pratt and Jack Bowser. Although it’s a disappointment that Charles Martinet, who is the original voice of Mario and Luigi in the games, did not voice the characters in the movie, the filmmakers still make an effort to gave him a voice cameo in the movie as a way to pay homage to him. This is something not often seen in other movies.

The animation is very well done and this is what I pretty much expected considering that this is the same animation studios that made Despicable Me franchise. It really looks a lot like their video game counterparts. The plot of the movie is pretty simple and not too convoluted but I think the plot is not nothing unique as this have been seen before many times in another movies. If you have play Mario games before, there are many things from the games are shown in this movie which you may be familiar which kind of makes this movie for fun. The only bad thing about this movie is I felt the ending is rushed right after the big battle to the point that it’s like the filmmakers want to end the movie as soon as possible.

Conclusion, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of the few good video game movie adaptations in the late 2010s and 2020s. Hollywood movie studios should take note on how video game movie adaptations should be done especially if it’s a Japanese IP. This movie really redeems Mario franchise on the big screen. If you are fans of Mario games, this movie is a must watch. There is a mid-credits and post-credits scene especially the latter scene where it tease another familiar character from the franchise for a potential sequel.… Expand

I have play quite some Mario games and i can identified most songs and little references from the games, but beyond that the movie is quite boring to me, maybe it's way to focus on the kid demographic...
