If you like the games you will enjoy this movie. It has something for everyone. As a movie I would only rate it 5 but with a Mario-game connection it gets a 7.

This is an easy 10. Me and the 8yo loved every second of this movie. It was funny and very true to the SMB world. If you love Mario you're gonna love this movie!

It was great for what you should be expecting to see from this movie. A great blend of the different Mario games, great pacing, awesome voice acting. Pretty funny, many elements from many Mario’s games. I enjoyed the whole movie. I don’t know what low rating people were expecting. It’s Mario!!! I give it a 10, because I was laughing so hard in many parts of the movie.

A frantic and entertaining movie!

NO NARRATION!!

I literally can't think of what people expect or wanted more out of a "Super Mario Bros" movie plot.

I do think the licensed music was mostly pointless. Doesn't detract but feels tacked in.

A great film, however it is very blatantly made for children and thus the length of the film is rather short and doesn't have much depth to it.

A lot of fun. While having the typical paper-thin video game plot and character development, I was entertained during the whole movie. Sometimes a movie just needs to do that. Countless themes from the Mario video game universe are seamlessly woven together in this visually epic extravaganza. Quite a few laughs supplement the visually stunning odyssey. 1st movie Ive been since 2019. Great kid friendly movie and nostalgic from my childhood. My 5 year olds first movie also and he was amazed. Great visuals, great voice acting & no woke trash. And only 1.5 hours long.

For what one person's opinion on this movie is worth: It is a visually appealing movie with some very by-the-numbers plot points. The attempt to squish any sort of true depth into 90-ish minutes was doomed from the start, which left me pretty dissatisfied on that note. The ending, in particular, felt egregiously abrupt.

Overall, this is a slightly above-par Illumination movie that relies heavily on nostalgia in an attempt to appeal to adults, while presenting many elements that would likely enthral younger audiences. The lack of too many moments that felt like corporate attempts at pandering was a relief, but the lack of anything that bore true emotional weight is lamentable.… Expand

This is still Super Mario, an entertainment film for the whole family. And what should I say ? It's everything I wanted. I also thought at first that it couldn't work, but yes, it works. Nostalgia, Easter Eggs, humor, and music. All great. Perhaps one could criticize the voice actors (German) and 1-2 mistakes in the story structure/contradictions, so 1 point deduction. But otherwise a very good entertaining nostalgic film.

I really enjoyed it. it might not have a deep story but nobody expected to have one, the story is fun and full of easter eggs of the nintendo world, that's what the fans expected to see.. the animation was spectacular, I really recomend it.

Great Game Adaptation. Very fun experience. There is no deeper story, but still very good visual story telling with great comedic timing. Animations is very beautiful. Music and references are very rewarding for fans of the games.

Don't listen to the increasingly estranged from reality 'Critics' - this movie is great fun, if you have had any enjoyment interacting with Mario over the last 40 years you will enjoy this film regardless of age.

I have been a Mario fan for years and this movie if full of references and fanservice to the Mario saga. But the plot is very generic and predictable. But I would only leave it as a single movie and not milking it with unessesary sequels or a ''NCU'' not everyone wants, because they can ruin it if they don't have a plan to do so. So its an 8/10 for me. The cast is awful but if you watch the movie on latin Spanish its way better.… Expand

SMB Movie - це гарний розважальний мульт, а для людей що хоть крапельку шарять за франшизу і люблять її, так взагалі відмінний. Так, основна історія проставата і в цілому стандартна для ігр Маріо, Баузер захотів одружитися з Піч, а МаріоSMB Movie - це гарний розважальний мульт, а для людей що хоть крапельку шарять за франшизу і люблять її, так взагалі відмінний. Так, основна історія проставата і в цілому стандартна для ігр Маріо, Баузер захотів одружитися з Піч, а Маріо потрібно врятувати Луїга, все ... але мультфільм хороший тим як він адаптував франшизу. Персонажі прям дуже хороші, Анюта і Джек Блек просто 10 з 10, так, образи Піч і основного Тоада переробили, але як на мене тут вони навіть краще. Дуже круто в мультфільмі адаптували геймплейні фішки, бонуси, навіть деякі підсерії та їх фішки (особливо охренів на кінцівці в стилі маріо і луїджі рпг), ну і звичайно ж відсилання і пасхали і всякі моментики для своїх, прям дуже приємні ... і все це зшито у фільмі прям дуже-дуже добре, набагато краще за ті ж аспекти в Саніке в Кено. Плюс реально гарний гумор і взагалі не в стилі тупих міньйонів і пердежного гидкого я (хоча я був готовий до такого), мульт взагалі не відчувається як мульт ілюмінейшен, так само як маріо+кволіки не відчуваються як ігри юбісофт, все-таки Нінка вміє стояти на своєму баченні. Коротше відмінна розвага для Маріобоів на зразок мене. Я задоволений.… Expand

If ever there was a movie's success that would embolden executives to ditch writers in favor of A.I. script writing, this would be it; you do not need a human to plug in a bunch of references and call it a day. Your time would be better served just playing a Mario Bros. game.… Expand

It's mediocre when compared to what it could've been. I feel like more characters could appear, or have more major roles (Yoshi, Koopalings, Daisy, King Boo, King Bob-Omb, etc), and I felt whelmed when walking out of the theatre. I do have a theory, that Nintendo MIGHT be eventually making a Mario Movie 2, which will include more.

I'm also somewhat disappointed that by the end Mario and Peach weren't confirmed to be a couple, like I don't want a passionate romantic scene or anything, maybe just a little kiss, like most movies do when the princess is saved or whatever.

So, to recap, could've had more characters, could've used certain characters more, Mario and Peach could've got confirmed to be a couple.… Expand

Very good movie overall, felt like there was some pacing issues though. The voice acting wasn't as bad as mainstream media made it out to be. Critics that rated this film low obviously never played the Mario games at all. There is no hand holding folks for non gamers; either you are familiar with all the elements of Mario games or you are not. Also, why do people complain about its simple plot: The original Star Wars has a very straightforward plot. Like the latter, the whole point of the movie is the spectacle and this film has it in spades. This is a perfect rendering of the games, supervised by Shigeru Miyamoto himself, and as close as you can get in getting the 'sensation' and excitement of playing the games. All the casts are well really great, especially Black as Bowser, an inspired casting choice. As of writing, the film will earn above US$200 million dollars in US alone, excluding its overseas numbers. Make up your own mind and watch it. The best film of 2023 so far.… Expand

Movie doesn't just boast gorgeous and vibrant animation, it features the most fun a kid can probably have in the last several months. For long-time fans of Mario video games (like myself), even more fun might be had for a rock-solid, fun, and fan-service experience that is a bombastic callback to anything Mario. Critics of the film have described the plot as "thin" which I think is an unfair characterization. It doesn't showcase, universal and deeply thematic narrative threads like Pixar sometimes does, but there's fair characterization and strong overall story structure to make everything completely coherent and sensical (for the story's world of course). I think the voice talent did a great job embodying the characters they play and the world's they designed are vibrant and great representations of the world you've come to see and enjoy. From a technical standpoint, the film is completely solid and Illumination has done a wonderful technical job with the aesthetics, animation, and editing. I did find the some moments in the final act to be slightly rushed but it didn't hinder the overall impact of the ending. All in all, I found myself smiling throughout having a good time. Even better, my little daughter who has played Mario Kart and watched me play Super Mario Odyssey had an even better time. I would say this film deserves the financial success and warm audience reception it's receiving since follow-up films and even a Nintendo universe is more than welcome in my eyes.… Expand

Not really one for “critics” to review so the low 4.3 score is really not a true score of the movie. This is a love letter to Mario fans. Although their were some odd transitions between scenes, it was a good , fun and enjoyable movie.

Critics are crazy. This is the proper Mario movie I was robbed of when growing up with SMB3, 64, and Sunshine. This is definitely one of my favorite movies. The animation and story is great, and the vast majority of the voice actors are perfect. Also the fact that pop song are used in 4(?) locations instead of better songs written specifically for those scenes is a bit disappointing. Otherwise, an altogether great movie with TONS of Easter Eggs!… Expand

No trata de ser algo más, Mario es Mario en la película, la mejor adaptación de un videojuego La trama de los juegos no son grandes historias pero hace que te metas en el juego ,la película es exactamente lo mismo ,no es la trama mejor desarrollada, pero en ningún momento te aburre, hace que estés al pendiente cada segundo ,ya sea por lo simple que es pero entretenida ,añadiendo un montón de referencias al juego Mi hija la disfruto ,tengo 35 años ,y si ,es una película para niños pero en el cine la sala estaba llena de niños disfrutando la película con sus hijos ,yo me convertí en niño durante mis mejores 90 minutos minutos en el Cine Fácil esta película entra en mi top 5 personal de películas en general Nintendo simplemente siendo Nintendo
Obvio las malas críticas vienen de estudios que pagaron por eso ,de gente que espera inclusión, etc,etc

This is honestly the best Illumination film I've ever watched in my entire life. And it is also my favorite. Before this movie was released, it was Despicable Me. It is VERY faithful to the games and the references are sick. I know some people didn't like Chris Pratt's performance as Mario but I don't mind it. I actually really loved it. My favorite is Jack Black's performance as Bowser. He literally sounds badass and fits him incredibly well. The voices in the movie are amazing and no one can change my mind about it. The voices are phenomenal. The animation is flawless and great for Illumination standards. The voices are phenomenal. The only flaw is the runtime. I mean, I like the runtime but it just feels like the movie is going quite quickly. But I couldn't care less. It is a Mario film, what did you expect? Nonetheless, I will and always love this movie. 10/10 (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!)… Expand

Did I dislike the movie? No. However, there really isn't much here. There's a lot packed into the movie, but it almost feels like nothing really happens until the final act. So much misandry. A great deal of the movie is Peach womansplaining while Mario is a buffoon for comic relief. The film is too rhythmic and seems to be screwed, not by its animation which is grandiose but by its scenario which goes quickly in work without fully exploiting the characters of Nintendo. Note a OST that will thrill the ears and chara-designs of the characters respecting both the franchise. But as a film, Super Mario Bros does not transcend and is ruined by the trailers which in the end represent almost the whole film.… Expand

I'm with the critics on this one.

The writing was the worst part - the story beats felt forced, rather than actually crafted into the story and the world building didn't feel believable to me, too much stuff taken literally from the games. II'm with the critics on this one.

The voices of Bowser, Luigi and Peach were great, but Chris Pratt as Mario really didn't work for me and Seth Rogen just doing his usual voice felt disconnected from Donkey Kong as well.

And the soundtrack wasn't very great either, out of place at times.

Atleast the animation and staging were good, but it doesn't save the movie for me.

The movie is a big celebration of the franchise, which is probably why fans love it, but it doesn't really stand on it's own.… Expand

One of the most unoriginal, shallow movies you'll see. If this were called anything else, No one would have seen this. It just so happens to be a Mario film and that is the sole reason it is getting any kind of praise.

The Super Mario Bros Movie just had the best opening weekend for an animated film ever, which means it should have something worth talking about, but as many have said already and Touissant Egan at Polygon most memorably puts it, it’s fine? There’s nothing especially standout, imaginative, groundbreaking, and that means we all have to bear some of the collective burden of whatever consequences arise from catapulting this shambling hulk of nostalgia into the stratosphere. And who benefits? Who really succeeds when Seth Rogan gets paid for voicing a cartoon character? (I am very attracted to the thesis of Egan’s article, that Wreck It Ralph paved a path for video game movies to follow, and that this particular movie is stuck in reruns in its first installment.)

“Connecting the dots” was the way that one Friend described the lack of plot to this movie, the slavish attention to including as many video game references as possible without really thinking too hard about how those scenes might flow one to the next. This movie was not extraordinarily interested in carving a new path for itself. It deployed a small, almost entirely white cast of dad comedians to lure children into theaters. The interview the dude bros of the cast did where they played Mario Kart while talking about their relationship with the Mario games solidified for me the fact that Anya Taylor-Joy probably didn’t spend a lot of time hanging out with her coworkers for this one, and also John Leguizamo is probably right that its one step forward two steps back for this franchise in terms of representation. Two movies come to mind that offer some alternate choices that could’ve been made.

The first is Detective Pikachu, the first live action movie in the Pokemon world, an almost perfect and absolutely bonkers concept in all of the rules we were lovingly brainwashed into believing about the way that Pokemon talk and the types of people who can become Pokemon masters look like are erased in a glorious kaleidoscope of murder and world building. DP departed from a lot of the nostalgia that it could’ve hewn close to without any objection and instead tried to tell a new story for an audience that was very, very familiar with the decades of lore associated with the game.

The second movie is, wait for it, Shang-Chi, and I know what you’re thinking and yes, you’re absolutely right, I’m going to talk about how the siblings should’ve shared the rings and taken down the dragon together again, because every movie that has an item of extreme power and two sibling protagonists is going to serve as a vehicle for my rewrite to that Marvel movie script. But the total number of rings was even, which would make for an asymmetrical configuration if placed on the arms, you shout! To which Friend responds, they could just put on their neck like a necklace. Super Mario Bros is able to give us that moment of sharing an indivisible power source! Despite the fact that you cannot actually in any example I can think of share that thing! And that seems fine!

Look, I’m mostly blah on the whole movie and the idea that it is about to make one billion dollars in the next few weeks globally really does seem like a sign that all of us, collectively, have some part in whatever evil we’ve unleashed on the world. That being said, there is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to watch Marvel super heroes voice characters from your favorite childhood video games while waiting approximately a month to watch those same Marvel super heroes in other Marvel super hero movies. I just think you should be prepared to offset this movie with some other good you’re going to do in the world after you’re done watching it. Like, you should have to plant a tree or stop eating meat for a year or something like that.

By far the most rewarding part of this entire movie is actually a bit character, Lumalee, a blue star from Mario Galaxy, whose depressive and borderline suicidal quips makes him the most nihilistic and entrancing of characters. “I’ve never wanted a tattoo, but I think if I were going to get one, it would be of that little guy,” Friend said to me as we walked out of the theater. I have no idea what the deal is with these ridiculous reviews, saying the movie is completely inaccessible for Non-Mario fans, one of the worst Illumination movies ever made and the film is inappropriate for children… Some of these pretentious reviewers need to go eat breakfast or something. I would actually go as far to say that this might be one of Illumination’s better films. Thankfully, there wasn't a lot of Illumination's... "Well, THAT just happened..." brand of humor you frequently see in their films. This movie feels a bit more controlled in that aspect, though that might be Nintendo keeping Illumination in check, so to speak. From beginning to end, it felt like I was watching someone else play a Mario game in the most entertaining way. Lot’s of snappy action and fight scenes with direct/to the point motives. If there is one portion of the movie where they lose major points, it would be some of the music choices. There were A lot of on-the-nose, 80’s music references (I can only assume these were Illumination’s choices) that didn’t really need to be in the movie. But the score itself was AMAZING. A lot of reverbed and re-orchestrated pieces from multiple Mario games that flow naturally and added so much to the spectacle of the film. Some of the voice acting was great, but some of the roles were a bit disappointing and I will now rank the big roles from my favorite to least favorite:

1. Charlie Day: Easily my favorite role of all. He did the whole fraidy-cat thing very well and felt like the spine of the whole movie.

2. Jack Black: This man portrayed Bowser as a simpy little incel and did so flawlessly. He even channeled his Tenacious D stuff, which was great!

3. Anya Taylor-Joy: Amazing as always and her portrayal of Princess Peach as a "Girl Boss" instead of her typical damsel in distress role really made her shine.

4. Keegan-Michael Key: Definitely the happy medium between the good and not so good roles. He was funny enough at times and sounded very refreshing compared to other iterations of Toad that I’ve had to listen to. (See old DIC cartoon series)

5. Chris Pratt: This kinda went as I thought it would. My dude just didn’t really sell it. It's pretty surprising that one of the weakest characters in a Super Mario Bros. Movie is Mario himself.

6. Seth Rogen: Surprisingly low energy as D.K., but he had some funny moments. 7. Fred Armisen: Cranky Kong just didn’t sound all that… Cranky to me.

While “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is mostly a spectacle, it’s a fun spectacle that brings all the fun of playing a Super Mario game to the big screen with no immediate need for a deep plot, save all of that stuff for a “Metroid” or “Zelda” movie. This movie is a good lean into a potential Super Mario Bros. Cinematic Universe. And I REALLY hope that the potential comes to fruition, because I really wana see the Koopalings in a sequel! Is so much better when it is doing actual Mario things and playing the actual Mario music. Loses me all the way when it starts playing Thunder, Take on Me or any other of the dozens of needle drops. Jack Black was awesome.

Un film léger et agréable à regarde, mais qui offre une meilleure lecture aux connaisseurs de l'univers Mario. Les Easter Eggs sont légions, et impossible à capter lors d'un seul visionnage voire deux. Hallucinant.

The Mario Movie is a blast to watch from start to finish. Nintendo has put their heart and soul into the Mario series, and this movie is simply a love letter to Nintendo and Mario fans across the globe. While someone who is not a big fan ofThe Mario Movie is a blast to watch from start to finish. Nintendo has put their heart and soul into the Mario series, and this movie is simply a love letter to Nintendo and Mario fans across the globe. While someone who is not a big fan of the Mario series will not get a big chunk of the references, a true Mario fanatic (such as myself), well get them. From the Giant Eels from Super Mario 64, to the Sand Kingdom from Odyssey, and even the DK Rap, this movie is filled to the brim with sneaky Mario references. The story, while somewhat simple, works well for Mario, as the storyline of most Mario games is somewhat simple. While Chris Pratt was not the best choice, he did a serviceable job as our red plumber. Charlie Day, Seth Rogan, and Jack Black steal the show here with their performances as Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser respectfully. The finale of the movie is amazing, and the music is stellar. Like people said, "This movie is not for reviewers, its for the players."… Expand
