This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This is the main reason I believe that critic scores are typically low for this movie, how movie critics do you expect to have even a surface level understanding of the inner workings of the Super Mario universe? Yeah, not a lot. But even if you don't have said understanding you can still have with the Mario movie if you go in expecting simple fun. Beyond such exterior things, the film's visuals are some of the best in recent memory, with a diverse set of colourful locations and characters. The score is obviously great, being that it's entirety is composed of borrowed themes from the games. Though don't let that make you think this score is unoriginal however, Brian Tyler does an amazing job weaving motifs from the games to create the score. Overall, funny plumber movie good :) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a very enjoyable watch especially as a Super Mario Bros fan. The references were good and subtle but it did heavily rely on them for marketing and getting people who played the OG game when they were younger to go see the movie, however the best part of the movie was definitely the Donkey Kong and Mario Kart stuff I mean for god sake they even used the DK Rap to introduce Donkey Kong (even if they didn't credit the composer) and the whole idea of the literal apes being the ones to invent cars was kind of funny. The only things that disappointed me about the movie were the fact that Luigi was set up as a side character (despite the fact that he could've easily gone on his own mini adventure or have been teamed up with Mario and Peach to stop Bowser) and the final battle being kind of underwhelming. All in all I'd definitely recommend this to any people who grew up on Mario and any Mario fans who want to see it. Expand

They did okay at making us care about the two plumbers, and I kind of liked that the antagonist had feelings, but I didn't have any reason to care about the princess. I heard kids laughing at times when I cringed at how bad a scene was, so clearly I am not the target audience. Boring and unfunny "Illumination shlock" with some entertaining visual gags and superficial references to the source material.

But if you're hoping this movie might be a step above your standard Illumination film, you'll be sorely disappointed.

It's a loosely-plotted sugar rush with great animation and a serviceable voice cast and soundtrack. As a "movie" though, it feels more like a 92 minute commercial for the games than a genuine movie. The movie has pacing issues to where it goes by too quickly. The movie goes from one set piece to another in quick and rapid progression. It hardly slows down to give the viewer a chance to breathe and process the events of the plot, the locations and the characters. There are some heartfelt moments here and there, but they're very brief and also insignificant overall because the movie itself forgets them altogether. The characters just aren't fleshed out well enough to make me even care much about them.

I would've liked to see more detail on Peach's backstory and how it affects her emotionally, why Bowser is so fixated on marrying Peach and conquering the world, how Mario and Luigi's family reacted to them being gone for so long, more interactions between Mario and Luigi, more interactions between Mario and Peach, more interactions between Mario and Toad, more screen time for events in Brooklyn, etc... The lackluster world-building is especially a problem to me because of how it incorporates many elements (floating bricks, floating platforms, warp pipes and power-ups) from the games into the movie at the expense of their logic not being explained well enough for non-Mario fans. A non-Mario fan would typically have so many questions about how things work in the Mushroom Kingdom, but the movie leaves so much unexplained and just expects you to tolerate it. The movie can be too faithful to the games at times.

By being too faithful, I mean its emphasis on references and easter eggs for the sake of them being there without much logic or reason to the point of it alienating the casual audience. This movie pulls no punches in bombarding you with references to the video games to where it has no grasp on subtlety. As a Mario fan, it may be somewhat fun pointing out those references and easter eggs, but when I'm more focused on the writing, plot and characterization, it's a very bland and unimaginative experience for a hero's journey film.

All-in-all, the movie is just average to me. It's not a bad movie, but it's far from good and leaves a lot to be desired in terms of its writing, characterization and world-building. This movie is a perfect example for why video game movie adaptations need to do a lot more than simply incorporating elements from the source material. As a movie, it needs to have a substantive plot to it, along with good characterization and themes, so I can feel emotionally invested in it overall. I don't care that it's "about Mario" or that it's "for kids", even though it's clearly geared towards Mario fans of all ages and there are much better written films than the Mario Movie like the LEGO movie, Angry Birds movie, and of course, the Sonic movies. Nintendo played it too safe with this movie and focused so much on fan service, references and easter eggs while refusing to actually make a movie that's accessible to the general audience. That's a major failure for the movie overall and makes it come off as soulless and corporate, since as I previously stated, the movie really is more of a 92 minute commercial for the video games and the brand than a genuine movie. It's because of that, I refuse to give this movie any higher of a rating than a 5.

Popcorn, coke, reclining seats AND two hours of America's favourite plumber? The big kiddo loved the minions when he was younger so for our family this was a must-see. Thought it was a sure shot as I loved mario when I was his age. Unfortunately I was disappointed to see the movie rely on cheap gags (that are not always appropriate for children) instead of the tried and true koopa-stomping action I expected from the nintendo. (or any other video game), so I can't relate to the graphics and characters, like most of the others in the audience. It follows the titular plumbers (voiced by Chris Pratt & Charlie Day) on an adventure that basically looks like a video game. There's a bit of water works to start, but that gives way to them bouncing thru a variety of objects and obstacles in the Mushroom Kingdom. The plot involves Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) coming up against the evil king Bowser (Jack Black) with the subsequent battles, but it's basically more of the same. Considering the cast, you'd expect some comedy (no real laughs), but this is pretty much a high-energy romp with bright visuals and a lot of cartoon violence. Fans of the game may enjoy seeing it "played" out on the big screen, but as someone who has no relationship to the Brothers, I found it silly and flat. Expand

The Super Mario Bros. Movie could have seriously used a 1-up with how this film turned out.

The pacing felt like those segments in Mario where you get the Star power-up in the games; fast-paced, little-to-no actual conflict or suspense since everything is too easy, and it's all over before you know it.

The worst part was the actors. The vast majority of the English cast did not match their roles in the slightest, especially Chris Pratt as Mario and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong (...really?). Hollywood needs to get out of the bad habit of only hiring A-list celebrities for big projects and bring on actual talent that will get the job well done.

The movie's only saving grace is its animation, design, and action sequences. They're definitely very visually appealing to watch while they last, but the lacking plot that doesn't honour what the original games were all about did not make them as intense or impactful as they could have been.

In short, if you're a huge Mario fan or a kid that's looking for a cheap thrill, this is definitely it. But if you're looking for a quality cinematic experience, this certainly isn't it.

This movie does not feel like a product of Nintendo, but rather like a somewhat okay cartoon but with a Nintendo license tacked on - and why is that?

Nintendo has managed to stay relevant across several generations now, because they’ve always been great at utilizing their history to cater to the longtime fans, while still making experiences that are welcoming to newcomers. The Mario franchise has always been the poster child for this approach, recently using a formula of having a main quest that gets deeper and more complicated the further you get, teaching the player new skills along the way, but never so hard that you can’t finish it, while also providing optional content that is intended mostly for the people who have played since the 80s/90s.
This design philosophy holds true in pretty much all 1st party Nintendo games that have been released since the GameCube era, but this approach is in no way captured in the Super Mario Bros Movie, and I think that’s what’s missing here.

Of course, you can’t translate gameplay directly to a story, especially given how barebones Nintendo’s general storytelling is in the first place, but the Mario movie feels like it introduces a great level 1, a decent level 2 but then never moves on to level 3, but just stays in the easy, comfortable zone where everything is still on autopilot. This is, however, probably a choice made by the director, because this is a movie that is 100% intended for kids, ages 5-12, so they can buy tons of merchandise and tickets for Super Nintendo World, and personally, I think that’s a damn shame when Nintendo has managed to pull off bridging the gap between several generations for so long, even though some franchises, like Mario, obviously still has a bigger appeal to children. It’s a choice made with money in mind, but it would have been totally possible to make something more impactful, that could have been more than a 90 minute commercial. Lego Movie did it flawlessly, and showed us how to interweave nostalgia, whimsy and childish humor into a seamless blend for all ages.

The Mario movie just goes hardcore on the whimsy, in a stupid, unfunny way (most of the jokes are just TERRIBLE, and don’t get me started on Bowsers cringy song… ugh), while they put in a TON of easter eggs in an effort to please the adults. In some situations this works, but it could have been so much more, and so, the movie ends up feeling very disappointing. I was totally expecting I would cry by the end of this thing; I mean, I cried when I reached New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey; but this movie did not even manage to give me goosebumps. I felt nothing, to be honest. The characters and story are about as deep as the original 2D game.

Also, the voice acting just never clicked with me. These versions of Mario & Co are all pretty bland, except maybe Jack Black as Bowser: but honestly, I think the only reason he shines through, is because he is the only voice that seems to somewhat match the character he portrays. He doesn’t feel as off, as all the other voices. Worst of all is Cranky Kong. Like, what the hell? At least give the character a voice that matches their body type. 5/10 from me.
Had this been a theme park ride, it would’ve been pretty good; it’s beautiful, the soundtrack is pretty great and the fan service is fantastic. The story however is paper thin, and there’s just. so much wasted potential, resulting in a weird product that fails in being a movie, but succeeds in being a cool visual experience if you like the Mario universe already. Just don’t expect Nintendo magic, or any actual, you know, plot.

Pretty soon II went into this movie as a Nintendo fan, but also as a fan of all sorts of different genre film. The trailers initially had me excited to see the movie, but the abysmal critic scores brought my expectations down considerably. Pretty soon I found myself hoping the movie was at the very least watchable, so that maybe we'd get more Nintendo universe films in the future if the movies did well enough to give things another try.

In the end I am glad I read those reviews, not because I ended up agreeing with them, but because they lowered my expectations to a point where my nephew and I left the theater very happy and surprised. I got a lot more out of the movie than I thought I would after reading the negatives, which I do not think has ever happened to me before. After watching the movie myself, I can say that the complaints regarding licensed music, Chris Pratt's mario voice and the Illumination Team's style of childish humor are indeed over-inflated. I kept waiting to find the issues the critics cited, but by the hour-mark, I must have became lost in the world of Nintendo, because the problems never manifested for me. I was ready to painfully cringe after the critic reviews, but spent my 90 minutes laughing, and found myself smiling scene to scene.

So, was the movie perfect? Not by typical film standards no, but as kid and gamer films go, I don't think I've ever been this entertained by a family movie. One gripe, is that I didn't get ENOUGH Mario movie! The film was a little short, and that made the plot move faster than it probably should have. I wanted to savor the worlds Mario traipsed by in montage instead of jumping directly from challenge to challenge. The movie also could have benefitted from some slower scenes for further character development, lore, and dialogue to better establish the desires and relationships of the characters. This becomes noticeable when we finally do end up getting these few moments because they are done exceptionally well! Mario had some solid interactions one-on-one with Luigi and Peach that proved the writers were capable of creating some meaningful dialogue that could really flesh things out. That said, this is a movie for kids, and I can't say for sure that they would really want to sit through those scenes when they may just want to skip to scenes with fireballs and koopa shells flying around. Depends on who you ask I suppose.

So there. I'm happy to say the movie ended up exceeding my expectations. It has me very excited for future projects from Nintendo/Illumination. Princess Peach and Bowser were probably my favorite characters out of the cast, but I enjoyed the work with the exception perhaps of Fred Armison's Cranky Kong, who was the one strange choice for voice work. Despite that, his performance was bearable for the amount of screen-time given to his character.

In closing, this is a movie that is going to make kids and gamers who are fond of Mario smile, and I think that is about all Mr. Miyamoto and Illumination were trying to accomplish. If you don't care for the Mario games or the characters, why are you buying a ticket? It was great. Ignore the critics this time and judge for yourself.

Playing Mario Bros is fun because of its simplicity, even in the difficult levels that managed to drive you crazy, but to say that in its dynamics there was some kind of story to tell with those characters would be a monumental lie.

Having said that, this film plays on a terrain that puts it in a tricky situation if we are going to pay attention to anything beyond the profitable financial business it will become.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a kid's movie. No matter what angle you look at it from. Even if you're 50 or older and love the character.
It's a kid's movie filled with just enough humor and fan-service expectations to appeal to general audiences.

It's true that there are children's movies that work better for all audiences, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn't have that.
It doesn't have that because of its limitations, and that's because it all comes down to something elementary yet 100% crucial.
If you want to go see a movie about something that you can play and that I think you'll be more entertained doing it, what's the point of having something inferior to that experience?

Perhaps the only obstacle to this is that you don't have a Nintendo console. Otherwise, I'd say you'd better look for any Mario game and you'll have a better time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Call me petty all you want, but I despise this movie for what they did to Bowser's character.

According to Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser, it is established that Bowser considers "Destroy Mario" to be too hardcore to order his minions to do. We notice this after Bowletta (disguised as Bowser) tells Captain Goomba to do what he was born to do and "Destroy Mario" which confuses him as it sounds like a bit much. Bowletta tells him to begone and he goes. The Captains are talking about it and say that they already knew. Captain Goomba points out that the way he was talking was definitely strange, not like Bowser at all, because he said to "Destroy Mario" which is too hardcore.

According to Paper Mario: The Origami King, when King Olly says he's gonna use the 1000 crane technique to grant himself the wish of turning all Toads into mere blank pieces of paper (King Olly was basically gonna commit Toad genocide) and Bowser replies to King Olly with "What? That's crazy talk! The Toads can't come back from that, you know? I wouldn't even do that! And I've done some mean stuff, believe me, ask Kamek!" basically setting it more in stone after what was confirmed in Minion Quest, that Bowser, does not, kill!

And what does the movie do? Decides to pee on AlphaDream's grave after they went bankrupt in 2019 of course! (AlphaDream, the creators of Mario & Luigi) although all the games portray the characters the same, AlphaDream set out to reveal the message that the world of Mario really isn't all black and white. There is lots of good to the minions, and Bowser Junior's Journey even said "Good and evil are outdated, simplistic terms, everything is relative!" (Though the Japanese version had Bowser Junior answer if they were evil with "Bowser's army is Bowser's army, the army of me and my dad!" which gives off the same message of "we're not evil, we're just us" but the English version made it more clear) so AlphaDream set out to prove Bowser and his minions are not evil with the side modes in the Mario and Luigi remakes, then went bankrupt in 2019. Fast forward to the Movie, and the MOVIE set out to UNDO WHAT ALPHADREAM REVEALED!

AlphaDream revealed that Bowser treats his minions well (even if some such as Larry Koopa take him literally and do what he says out of fear of being scolded) and although Bowser sometimes lets his anger get the better of him, it's typically when someone else provokes him like Peach deliberately outcasting him during the Blorb pandemic in Bowser's Inside Story, Bowser in the intro of Bowser Junior's Journey almost blew fire on Kamek as a result of Peach outcasting him, or when Iggy made fun of Bowser and talked bad about Bowser Junior by responding to Bowser saying Junior is a good kid by saying "Bahaha! You're joking, right? And people say I'm the crazy one!" or when Starlow boldly told Bowser he has absolutely NO right to visit the blorb meeting without even stopping to ask why and realizing his Goombas were going through the same problem. Despite this, we hear it from Kamek in Bowser Junior's Journey, this is why the minions choose to listen to and take orders from Bowser, as oppose to the Koopalings leaving Junior. (Larry is the only one who would really rather not do as Bowser orders, as he'd rather rest or hang with friends than defeat Mario, but does what Bowser says specifically to avoid being scolded, and the fact of the matter is that it's because Larry is a gullible kid who takes Bowser literally, and Bowser talks tough and acts tough so he can be the "biggest baddest brute around" in the games, but despite this, it seems Larry still sees how Bowser treats him well regardless of not wanting to do as ordered, but taking Bowser literally) Bowser is a good king to his minions to the point Minion Spirit is a thing. Although Bowser isn't always around for Junior, Bowser is an overall good father to Bowser Junior and it's shown through how much Junior wants to be just like him!

But in the Movie, Bowser was HORRIBLY misportrayed, even within the first few seconds of his screentime, first thing he says "Open the gates, or die" adding "or die" was completely unnecessary and out of character for him! Then there was him going on to threaten to kill Luigi or try to kill Mario, or have his minions kill Mario which MINION QUEST ESTABLISHED IS OoC, and then the movie flanderized Bowser's love for Peach (making it way too excessive) as well as flanderized how much of a manchild Bowser is, and mixed it with the writers over vilifying him by having him threaten to kill if he doesn't get his way, and then when he GETS HIS WAY, HE ATTEMPTS TO KILL ANYWAY! And the worst part? He was attempting to kill a whole bunch of people in cages! Because he was "sacrificing them for Peach" when that is bad thing to put in his character, because ORIGAMI KING ESTABLISHED THIS IS OoC! Fueling the toxic Mario fandom is unforgivable and so is misportraying characters I know so well and care so much about!

It's not only beautiful visually, but it does have more heart than people have been claiming. I didn't want to like Pratt as Mario, but I actually have to say he did a decent job. The pacing is a little quick and yes, the movie doesn't have a whole lot of character development, but one must consider the audience. I am thankful that, despite its aim towards a younger audience, it isn't filled with potty humor, nor does it pander. It's a fun film and definitely a love letter to Mario fans, both new and old! Very solid movie. Do not let the more praising nor critical scores fool you. Though I do admit, I wish some things were different (much could've been different), they did a great job with the direction they were going for.

Movie is a nostalgia bomb! I loved every minute and watched with my two kids. We can't wait to own it. This movie sets the standard for all video game movies to come!

SOLID animated movie for the entire family. Yes if you know anything about the games you'll enjoy it more, but it's still good for anyone who hasn't.

I recommend it for the whole family. No social propaganda like disney. Thank you Illumination and Nintendo for showing that a movie should have good stories, animation and character development.

short but sweet the end was amazing the only thing that could be improved is before that it was relitivly all just a build up to the end.

THE GOOD: Score, animation, references... all of these will bring you to your childhood memories. A must see in the cinema.

THE BAD: It is pretty simple and it feels way too rushed, could have used a bit more of runtime.

Laurka dla Mariana i świata wykreowanego przez Shigeru Miyamoto oraz Nintendo, pełno nawiązań i smaczków, niestety ktoś postanowił skleić to fabułą na ślinę
