From the graphical style, the characters (of course), the voices, the music/sounds, the plot, etc. to the easter eggs (which made me tear up)... EVERYTHING breathes Nintendo and it's amazing for real Nintendo & Mario fans. A MUST SEE!

I personally highly recommend this film. I'm glad that this film doesn't follow the disastrous woke trend, but sticking on the original setting of game characters and game world. I watch it with my family, and we have lots of fun time.

Its really just meh..... wait to pirate, download or get it cheap. really wanted to like it as a lifelong Nintendo fan, but the movie felt hollow and lifeless. The highlights were hearing Koji Kondo's themes, though they lasted mere seconds and were trodden down by Brian Tyler's uninspired trailer music and random forced pop music.

The story and characters seemed to be written by people who didn't play the games and were hoping throwing fanservice in would make a lot of easy money. They weren't wrong, but I hope that the next film gets better writers and more fitting English voice actors like Jack Black was for Bowser

I still find Sonic movies better for various reasons but this Mario movies does justice for the franchise and is a great introduction for the next Nintendo movies. The main thing that bothered me was about cramping too much stuff into a fairly short movie. It's too much lore to put into a single movie. Other than that, I had fun and my nephew (8 yo) and niece (5 yo) had a blast. I can't recommend it more if you have kids. Expand

I have to be honest, this movie would have been far better if the voice actors had been better. Donkey Kong was just Seth Rogan, Mario was just Chris Pratt with a slight accent/voice.
They just sounded like the celebrities rather than the characters I know and that removed me from the experience.

I also felt like they could've done so much more with the source material, so many missed opportunities for references and ways to blend story and game together.

I feel like a load of executives influenced the film and it wouldn't surprise me if those executives were more on the Illumination side of things, rather than the Nintendo side.

It wasn't entirely unpleasant, it got some laughs and I enjoyed a fair amount of the film. But it just could have been so much better.

If I was an 8 year old kid, the film was a riot and great, 9 or 10.
As an older fan of the games, could've been better.

Nintendo played it safe here. Mario punches blocks, DK throws barrels, and Luigi exists as a plot device.

I'm truly conflicted. (watched on Amazon Prime)

Cinematography: Visuals are literal eye candy, although there is a lack of diversity that causes it to become paradoxically bland 1/4th into the film. The palette is shockingly narrow. Some scenes have a lot of detail, but they don't remain on screen for too long. The "magic world" doesn't have as much texture detail as the "real world". Some visuals are 100/100 - but the whole package due to lack of diversity gets a 60/100 - by the end of the movie the visuals are tired - don't want to watch another movie like this ever again tragically.

Story: There is no real story, characters are one dimensional - especially peach - the plot is so mind numbingly basic and crammed together. I think what bothers me the most is that it isn't how I imagined these characters at all or the story of the games. The movie doesn't take itself seriously.

Casting: I think the most disappointing thing was that Jack Black and Seth Rogan broke immersion by inserting tenacious D and pineapple express moments - not once but continuously. Donkey Kong has an obnoxious Seth Rogan stoner laugh, Bowser is Jack Black with an attitude. Again the movie doesn't take itself seriously.

Overall: Very short movie, crammed together, vapid, visually stunning at first but by the end nauseating and bland; leaves an odd dissatisfaction/void at the end that is even commented on by the movie itself. Only some cool visuals every few minutes and homages to the games hold this together, but otherwise is a complete rainbow mess that doesn't take itself seriously. I was holding out hope until the ending; would've given it an 8 out of 10 - but the way it ended - 4 out of 10.

"Dissatisfying".

Cheesy pop tunes pull you out of the movie, which are especially strange considering the insane catalogue of music they have and the inhouse music talent of Nintendo that must have been at their disposal. Then there's the bone dry plot, it's blander than plain cottage cheese and dry chicken breast, basically the only exciting part is Jack Black's Bowser. THEN there's the mediocre voice acting, they seriously went with Chris Pratt solely because he is a big name, they should have gotten a more mario-esque voice. Probably could have just let Jack Black do the voice and it would have sounded better honestly.

You know if this is one of your first rodeo's with animated movies I can see why it could be a 10 or a 9. However after 30 years of enjoying animated movies, I've just seen this movie a dozen times. Which doesn't make it inherently bad, it's just lazy IMO. This movie is a fun colorful way to spend an hour and a half, but that's about it. If this movie did not have the Mario name behind it people would be ignoring it completely.

TL;DR Fun movie but way too generic, terrible pop music, and the only great voice actor is Jack Black.

PROS:
-The look of this movie is beautiful - especially the Mushroom Kingdom environment - and the characters are just as great looking as they are entertaining to watch.
-Jack Black is perfectly cast in the role of Bowser.
-The story, simple as it is, is a breath of fresh air from more recent releases that seemed to rely on being incredibly convoluted at times.
-The action was incredibly fun to sit through, enhanced by the stunning visuals of course.
-The music was great to listen to throughout the whole thing; the combination of original music and Koji Kondo's themes from the video games were brought together beautifully in this film. Heck, even some of the songs they used worked well.

CONS:
-The overall casting, while not bad (see my mention of Jablinksi above), didn't really impress me all that much. Some bits of dialogue just felt awkward to me with the way they were delivered too. I can at least forgive it though, since it's in some part because...
-The script for this movie is not particularly well-written and the film moves along much quicker than it really needed to. Some lines, and scenes, are much too quick and to the point throughout the film, just giving you a Cliff Notes version of what each scene is supposed to contain when they could've been expanded on more.
-Characters like Toad and D.K. didn't really feel like they were all that necessary at times, which really hampers the movie a bit. It doesn't help that Keegan-Michael Key as Toad is annoying at times, and Seth Rogan is just playing himself but as a giant gorilla with a tie.
-Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong...is just there.
-Mario and Luigi, despite being the film’s titular main characters, don’t get to really do a lot together before they’re separated or even after they’ve reunited. This movie was just a Mario movie with Luigi as a side character (though that’s not all too surprising).
-The use of some songs (like A-Ha’s “Take on Me”) didn’t really feel like they needed to be there, and it didn’t help that an original composition from Brian Tyler was cut from the final film to be replaced with that. “D.K. Rap” also didn’t really feel like it belonged there, at least not to me.

Overall, it's not the greatest movie I've seen, but it's not the worst either (despite what Grace Randolph or other stuck-up critics would tell you).

The story is bland and not exciting, which is especially surprising for an illumination project. The Voice acting is mostly unmemorable except for Jack Black as Bowser.

With its short runtime, the movie rushes from location to location (this helps with the thin plot) and by the end a hurrah isn't guaranteed. There's no character development, and the backstory to most of the characters is missing.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one that caters to the fanbase of the games but not to a general audience.

First part of the movie is okay, although I don't know why they're doubling down on Luigi being a coward.

Writing feels like they forgot what they were doing later on. First half shows Mario being a very capable parkour athlete and then later on when he needs to progress an obstacle course and then shows him beefing it nonstop. I thought Bowser was this big huge threat, but whatever, let's just waste time.

It feels like they focused on video game elements instead of story telling with this film, so as long as you like watching a movie emulate mario kart you'll be very happy.

The voice acting is the typical soulless Hollywood style (Except for Jack Black's performance on Bowser, he is great). Why can't they just hire the original game voice actor? Why is the video game industry so obsessed with Hollywood?
Some of the music is downright lazy and unoriginal, especially when they have so much good Mario music to choose from. But no, they choose the most overused and cliche American pop song, yes, they are good songs, but they just wouldn't fit.

Neutral:
The plot is brainlessly simple without any twist, but I wouldn't hold it against them. Hey, that's a kid movie, just turn off your brain and enjoy it with your family.

Illumination and Nintendo actually did a phenomenal job here. The two basically main characters of the film are Mario and Peach, who are completely transformed from their game counterparts, going from characters whose essentially only personality traits were "heroic" and "kind," respectively, to characters who have surprising depth (It's nothing crazy, but definitely a big improvement). All the other characters were great too, except for Spike. They turned everyone's favorite fictional foreman into just some generic Illumination guy. Truly an L (for "Luigi left your business"). Mario and Luigi's relationship is also adorable. Next, the voice acting. There was a lot of prerelease apprehension for how Chris Pratt would do as Mario, but he actually nailed it. All the other voices are great, as well. Except maybe Cranky. He sounds real weird. Not that they had much to go on from the games, mind. The art style and animation are gorgeous. Musical score is great, with lots (I think the composer said over 100!) of references to famous themes from the games. Lots of other Easter eggs too! The overall plot, while fairly simple, is very well done. One thing I really liked in specific was that Bowser is presented as a real threat this time. The only real problem I have with the movie besides Foreman Spike is that it does move a little quickly in the first half (one thing the critics did get right), but overall the movie is incredible. Sorry if I droned on a bit!

ALSO BOWSER SINGS A FREAKING ROCK BALLAD, THIS MOVIE IS GREAT

9/10 overall (overall? Get it? Because they wear - never mind.)

Why are people so negative these days ? This is a VERY GOOD KIDS/FAMILY film. You don’t have to be a Mario fan. BUT for obvious reasons it’s way better if you are. I watched the 1993 Mario (or when ever it was) and was sooo disappointed. But this is great. I don’t know why Chris Pratt is getting so much hate. It’s like people don’t want to like him because he is now popular, I can’t think of a better cast. The nod to Charles Martinet the original Mario voice as jump man is a great touch. The original voice would have annoyed for a full length movie. I feel like The 1993 film is almost what todays ‘critics’ are angling for but, would be saying things like “where is the fan service”, “a more popular voice and change for Mario’s voice would have been a great move”….. we live in a world where if something is going to be popular let’s rip it apart. But praise some artsy crap film. This is fun. Expand

The 90s Mario film was ruined because its filmmakers tried far far too hard to twist joyful Mario into something edgy, dark, and weird. This film accepts that Mario - despite the fantasy setting - is simple, joyful, and fun. The film's simple message that what makes Mario special is that he never gives up no matter how many times he fails is also true to the Mario games and, while not particularly edgy or deep, is still a good message for children. I had my concerns about Chris Pratt and Seth Rogan's clear disinterest in actual voice acting. Well, I admit it, I was wrong. They're fine. Their performances never rise to the level of Jack Black's Bowser but they don't distract from the experience either.

This is much more than a cheap nostalgia smash and grab. Nintendo is clearly invested in the long term success of Mario and this, along with the theme parks, is the next step towards something more.

The sounds, visuals and fan service were great. But the plot is awful and honestly ruins the movie. I wish they would have just kept the original stories of Peach being kidnapped from the very start and Mario having to go on a grand adventure to save her. They could have used various worlds in lots of cool ways and introduced us to all the characters and villains throughout the movie as he goes through a few worlds. Let’s chill out as fans because we actually deserve so much better then what was given to us. Just because Mario himself was on a big screen and we were given all the proper nostalgic moments doesn’t mean the movie was good. 5/10 movie and the critics were right. The movie is not very good. The thing is that the script, the plot is built for ages 8-13. Yes, adults can relish in the high-tech animation and enjoy nostalgic pop songs like "Take on Me" and ELO's "Mr Blue Sky" which leads into final credits, but most of the situations and certainly the fight physics are ludicrous, unless you're ages 8-13. The voice cast is comprised of A-list actors but they either can't do voice overs or they just didn't try, and you know why? There was not one credit for voice director or coach! A gazillion credits listed for animators, artists, musicians, and even a credit for a sole intern(!) but not a voice director. Young kids and their parents will certainly give high scores and they're the ones that led this film to its $1.3B w/w box office haul, but for everyone else, it's just a meh thing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While this movie is a fun time and the references are cool if you turn your brain off, if you want plot, character depth or any of the other things that made movies like Aladdin or the lion king interesting look elsewhere, this movie is a shallow advertisement with all the character development of a sports game, peach is improved from her game counterpart but that's a low bar, as is everything else about the characters, bowser is a simp who's interesting in the first scene he's shown in and nowhere else he's not threatening, and not cool, he's stupid and comic relief most of the time, the top quality animation does little to distract from the stupid licensed songs that have no right to be there, the voices of bowser toad and Luigi are good, but peaches voice feels out of place but still good enough and Mario's voice is awful, the pacing is all out of whack and with the run time the entire half of the movie spent getting the Kong army is rendered pointless by an explosion dropping them into the sea, Luigi miraculously stops being afraid the second Mario drops in instead of shining some light on a character arc,
not a single character in the movie has an arc, they're only slightly less static than their game counterparts, I didn't expect Aladdin level story, but I did expect at least characters with more depth than cardboard.

The movie hits all the right notes with a tremendous amount of fan service that will please longtime fans of the Mario series as well as longtime Nintendo fans in general. I’m sure it will take multiple repeat viewings to find every reference crammed into this film. The Super Mario Bros movie is a very wholesome and family friendly movie about good overcoming evil and finding inner strength to overcome fear. The voice over performances are top notch especially for the mario brothers and bowser. Chris Pratt did a fantastic job trying to balance a voice somewhere between the video games and a brooklyn accent and comes off very fitting and likable. Jack Black likewise did an excellent job not only sounding intimidating as big bad bowser but also funny and comedic.

The film itself is also gorgeous with some of the most colorful and detailed animation. It’s a real treat for the eyes and really brought the mushroom kingdom to life.

I highly recommend this film for anyone looking to see a fun family movie that was clearly made for fans but can be enjoyed by anybody.

When I heard they were making a Mario movie I had hope that Nintendo wouldn't let it be overrun with leftist Hollywood politics and just make a fun movie but, I was skeptical due to flood of woke movies and TV shows that have been crammed down our throats in the last few years. After watching the Mario movie I can safely say that Nintendo and Illumination delivered! This movie was pure fun, just like a movie targeted for kids should be. With that said, Mario isn't just for kids, there are so many references in this movie to classic games that only adult gamers would really pick up on and appreciate. I'm so glad that I was able to take my kids to this movie and share the love I have for Mario with them without having to be lectured about CRT, racism, grooming, trans kids, etc. Mario is what a family movie is supposed to be, just a fun escape from reality and a great time for the whole family.

The animation is top tier, probably the best I have ever seen in a movie like this, yes I would put it over pixar any day of the week. Illumination really worked hard on this level of animation and it shows. I remember being in awe as a child watching Toy Story for the first time and this was reminiscent of that. There were plenty of songs taken from several Mario games that just fit with the Movie so well. All the easter eggs to other Nintendo games made me smile each time I caught a glimpse. I loved the nods to Luigi's Mansion in particular.

As far as negatives go, there really isn't much to complain about. If anything, I wanted more time in the mushroom kingdom and less time devoted to Brooklyn but, overall, its nothing to dock points on. I thought Chris Pratt was great as Mario, the accent was well balanced and not to overbearing. Jack Black knocked it out of the park as Bowser, Charlie Day was fantastic as Luigi, and Anya Taylor Joy was great as Peach. Cranky Kong's voice was a little weird to me. Seth Rogen was really distracting as Donkey Kong because he didn't even try to sound like something other than himself. Having his weird laugh left in the movie was cringey. Overall, if you are on the fence about going to see the Mario movie because of critic reviews, go ahead and give it a watch for yourself. It's worth it. I loved this movie and I can't wait to see what they do with next one and what this movie's success might mean for more Nintendo franchises to come.

Great fan service, colorful, extraordinary animation and music, this movie gives everything a fan would have wanted from a modern Mario movie.
Critics who are saying the movie is "souless" have clearly never played a mario game, it is not about a deep psichological story, Mario is and has always been a about a simple (and sometimes repetitive) story but with greatly executed gameplay that is fun to play, and Mario movie does exactly the same for the big screen.
The only "bad" thing about this movie is of course Chris Pratt, but hey, nothing can be perfect

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nintendos second try at an adaptation of one of their beloved game series, (Well at least up until super mario bros Wii, the series went a bit down hill from then) and is it good (unlike the original 1996 adaptation which was abysmal)? Hell yeah. Nobody cares what the critics have to say as they're notorious for their sh*tty reviews.
The animation is probably the best to come out of illumination, the amount of Easter eggs (such as anti-gravity from Mario kart 8 and rainbow road, music Easter eggs such as the music from the gusty garden galaxy in super mario galaxy and the secret levels in the 3D mario games and tons more, heck the cat suit even made an appearance!) in it was incredible and the story itself was a masterpiece. It's so good that they didn't go the safe ruit and just do the usual Princess Peach gets kidnapped by bowser and Mario goes to save her, as that plot line is unfortunately overused in the Mario series and the film probably would have been bad if they did go with that kinda plot. This film was very funny and Chris Pratt did a great job voicing Mario. It's certainly better than the first Sonic the hedgehog movie, but in my opinion, it's not as good as Sonic the hedgehog 2.
Fantastic film, can't wait for what in store for the future.

A Super mario fans dream movie
This movie is a mario fans dream movie, with many Easter eggs from all the games to the plot being something different than the same save the princess plot. It shocked me how good this film is and deserves to be the best video game movie of all time. Though it was quite fast paced which made it a nine out of ten for me. But thats the only bad thing about it. Besides chris pratt mario. With the funny jokes and references to other games, this truly is a fantastic movie which i highly recommend to people who read this to go watch. You will not be disappointed by this film. Nintendo fans would enjoy this more since there's more understanding on whats going on with non nintendo gamers not knowing the references in the movie. With the best part being the fact they finally showed us where the blue shell came from. When the blue shelled koopa used it on Mario and donkey kong to stop them. Overall, a amazing experience that i will never forget. This is a really wholesome movie to me, how much detail and story that was crammed into a 92 minute movie. Some parts even made me cry just from being so nostalgic to me. I was there with the series when i got my hands on a DS and Wii back when i was young, the memories i made playing those mario games came back through this movie. Thats why its this good, the childhood memories of playing on your DS and Wii games that are Mario games really make this movie more fun to watch and understand. Like how Mario and Luigi throughout their whole life, people telling them they won't succeed. But show them that when there together, nothing is impossible. And felt that connection with my own brother since i was always being picked on when i was small but he was there to protect me like how when young Luigi was building a castle out of bricks and another kid destroys it and Mario comes help him. Thats why this movie is great. It has some really good backstory elements sprinkled in there. The super Mario bros movie is something you don't want to miss out on.

The human characters like Mario, Luigi and Peach's faces look different from their videogame counterparts and kind of weird at first but you will get used to them and at least their clothing match but on the other hand the animals and creatures from the Mushroom Kingdom like the Koopas, Donkey Kong and Bowser all look very accurate and detailed.

The Voice Acting, Sorry but Mario does NOT sound like Mario, at all in this movie! I'm not a fan of Chriss Pratt's acting as Mario. Luigi sounds better but not accurate either, Peach is good i guess and Donkey Kong sounds like Seth Rogen...Yay... Bowser however, gets a straight 10/10 Jack Black actually tried to sound like Bowser and he should be cast again as Bowser in future movies. Long time Mario fans will be surprised to know that Charles Martinet is also in the movie, but not as Mario... The character he got to act for is such a waste and not even worth mentioning to be honest.

The Story is not your typical Mario videogame story, it's actually baffling at first how literal they took the Mario "origin" story of him being a New York plumber. The movie starts going in the wrong direction but as the movie goes on it becomes better and better and ultimately it worked in the end. The pacing is very fast there is no real character development except for Luigi and maybe Mario but there's just too many relevant characters and not enough time to flesh them out. At least they all have defined personalities.

Overall, it's not an Amazing movie but definitely a fun and good first outing by Nintendo and Illumination, it's full of Mario references and just good fan service like a Mario movie should be. Here's hoping future Mario movies!!

This is like a 5/10 story. Wrapped in 10/10 animation. With 10/10 fan service & callbacks. I give it a C+ on its own terms. With 10/10 fan service & callbacks. I give it a C+ on its own terms. I think it has the makings of an A, if only they fleshed out the characters more and had an actual second act. It kind of begins...and ends. Where's the middle? Where's the beef? Where's the twist? Where's the character motivation? What IS the Mushroom Kingdom? Why does Peach immediately trust Mario? The answers don't have to be perfect, but we NEED answers in order to stay with a movie. The creators of the movie decided not to go deep on story at all, but instead decide on a bunch of cool sequences and lazily string them together. To their credit, the sequences are all very cool and well done, which is why this movie gets a C+ and not an F. I am optimistic this movie will grow on me with the next viewing, now I fully comprehend what it is and isn't. Expand
