When rating kids movies you gotta look through the eyes of a younger self instead of an adult. When I was wee I only cared about how exiting and cool the movie looked, and this movie looked great and exiting. I can dismiss the not very interesting story and the basic writing because kids (the target audience) don't care about that. Maybe older viewers might care but not the target audience. Also, this movie has a lot of fan service and references so if that is your thing and you like Mario (and other Nintendo IP's) then this will entertain you. I rate The Super Mario Bros. Movie 8 out of 10 because it succeded at being an action packed Mario movie for kids but was not terribly interesting storywise.… Expand

Definitely a movie for fans. The story feels a bit rushed but it does the job. I was really worried that this was going to be a bad movie when it was first announced. A lot of the marketing did little to dissuade me from this outlook. I genuinely laughed at the jokes throughout the whole thing and I think they did the characters justice. Plenty of people were worried about characterization of Peach but I can say she is one of the best characters and comes off as competent and strong but also kind, caring, and helpful which is what is usually missing from all modern versions of the "strong female character". If you love the Mario franchise then this movie is a great rendition of the characters and the world they inhabit.… Expand

I found myself quite bored for long periods, until the third act when the movie goes completely over the top. It also wasn't nearly as funny as I was expecting; a few laugh out loud moments but mostly meh. Also surprisingly violent; as a punch in the face is a punch in the face whether you're a video game character or not. Overall I'd say this isn't as good as the first Sonic movie, and nowhere near as good as the Lego movie.… Expand

Look, I'm not trying to say this is a great movie. In fact, academically speaking, it's very much a mixed bag. The voice acting takes a bit to get used to, the narrative is basic at best and some of the jokes needs to be launched into the sunLook, I'm not trying to say this is a great movie. The voice acting takes a bit to get used to, the narrative is basic at best and some of the jokes needs to be launched into the sun (Illumination make a movie without any cringe humor in it challenge 2023). With all that said, however, I find myself in the incredibly precarious position of being biased by the subject matter. Given the cinematic history of the character at hand here, all this movie had to do was show just a modicum of respect for things and I probably would've walked out with a smile on my face. Gratefully, there's at least more than a modicum on display. The score alone for this is chock full of enough audio cues to make the avid Mushroom Kingdom visitor's ears prick up at least twice or thrice. Coupled with the stellar animation and some inspired set-piece design throughout, I have to say I was more than entertained. Sure, the fan-service is empty and lazy, but what can I say? I'm compromised here. Here's hoping I can feel less guilty about whatever sequels they make to this.… Expand

Based off the long-running classic Nintendo game series that most of us all know and love, Super Mario gets the 3D computer-animated treatment at long last in this vibrant and colorful film that follows him and his brother Luigi, a pair ofBased off the long-running classic Nintendo game series that most of us all know and love, Super Mario gets the 3D computer-animated treatment at long last in this vibrant and colorful film that follows him and his brother Luigi, a pair of plumbers living in Brooklyn, New York who find themselves transported to the Mushroom Kingdom and must band together with Princess Peach to stop Bowser from trying to marry her, lest he conquers the whole kingdom. I was super on the fence about this one for a number of different reasons. For starters, like most others, I had my reservations about Chris Pratt voicing the titular plumber out of fear that he'd sound nothing like the Mario we've all come to know over the years, let alone the fact that he felt like such a random choice for the role. I also had my concerns about how well it would cater to the OG fans that grew up with the series over the past few decades vs. how much it would pander to all the Gen z kids that don't have as near as much knowledge or background on the video games by just throwing in a bunch of irrelevant or silly gags. However, the final result? I have to say that I was most pleasantly surprised for the most part, as this turned out to be not just a fun and entertaining romp for all ages, but it also really paid great respect and tribute to the legacy of Mario and the franchise as a whole! I really wasn't expecting this, but the amount of subtle winks, nods, Easter egg/sound effects and tributes to various games in the franchise were all greatly welcomed and fun to see. As if that wasn't enough, it was so much more hilarious than I could've possibly imagined it being. I quite literally laughed my ass off through most of it! Granted, there were some moments that delved into a little more childish humor for my liking, but it thankfully doesn't go too overboard with it. As for the voice acting, while it was a little difficult for me to wrap my head around Pratt's take on Mario, I did find myself becoming a little more used to it after long enough, although admittedly, he still would've been far from my first choice for the role. Nevertheless, he gets the job and ever so slight Italian accent done adequately enough I suppose. Charlie Day as Luigi on the other hand felt and sounded absolutely perfect, though his character was rather wasted and spent the majority of the film as more of a prisoner/damsel in distress character than even Princess Peach. Speaking of whom, Anya Taylor-Joy's take on Peach felt more capable, confident, and all-around badass as opposed to the prim and proper damsel in distress depiction most of us are likely familiar with for her character, which was a very welcome and refreshing change of pace. Seth Rogen is also a hoot to watch as the voice of Donkey Kong. Last but certainly not least, Jack Black damn near steals the whole movie with his equal parts menacing and hilarious take on Bowser. Anytime he was onscreen, I was just about dying of laughter. Storywise, none of it felt too predictable or formulaic in the slightest and it simply seemed to flow at a frenetic yet always enjoyable pace without ever feeling like too much or an overload. Overall, while Pratt may have not been the perfect choice for Mario in my eyes, and the humor felt only slightly forced towards the children demographic at times, the rest of the voice cast really fit and made the most of their characters quite well. In addition, this was an undeniably enjoyable and satisfying modernization of the classic plumbing duo that pays all the loving homage that the beloved video game franchise deserves while managing to balance it all out and remain a delight for audiences of every age.… Expand

Fun and light, definitely the best non-video game media to come from Nintendo. Loved the visual and audio callbacks and the easter eggs. Adversely, it did move a little too fast and I didn’t care for the location of the climax.

Don't listen to the critic reviews on this one. I'm an 80's kid who grew up with Mario and Luigi, and I took my kids to see this. It's great all around. Very fun, if you're on the fence because of bad reviews, go see it.

El diseño de personajes es impecable, aunque siendo sinceros, Nintendo ya tenia los modelos en 3D y los animadores de la empresa siempre han cuidado los detalles del producto, entonces no sorprende ver el resultado en la calidad audiovisual.
Los personajes secundarios están bien escritos y son entretenidos: Kong, los pingüinos, secuaces de Bowser, me encantaría ver una película del reino de Kong con participación tal vez de Mario o mucho mejor de los pingüinos, en definitiva, los secundarios son geniales.
Otra película que sería genial seria Luigi como protagonista y una casa embrujada, tal cual el videojuego.
Ahora puntos débiles de la película, la trama, es ridícula, cliche y la verdad increíblemente predecible, en especial, la forma en que están escritos dos personajes, el primero Bowser, una tortuga gigante que quiere tener una relación sentimental con una humana, no hay que tener dos dedos de frente para ver que es una idea desagradable, por ser una relación inter – especie, rayando en el bestialismo, asqueroso, pero digamos que el villano fuera humano, siento que he visto esta película mil veces, un hombre toxico que desea a una mujer que no le corresponde, y al final un hombre gentil y puro de corazón salva el día.
Bowser esta escrito de manera pésima, no puede aspirar a algo mejor, a la conquista del mundo, tal vez a conseguir recursos porque necesita mantener su industria, o quizás necesita un recurso preciado del reino champiñón porque debe salvar a su familia, por favor, Nintendo, escribe personajes tridimensionales con algo de trasfondo y no copias baratas de estereotipos, cualquier tema hubiera sido mejor que una historia de amor frustrada.
Ahora el segundo personaje que esta escrito obviamente para contentar al sector progresista de moda, la princesa Peach, increíble, preciosa, perfecta en todos los sentidos, no hay nadie como ella, ven a donde se quiere llegar, se proyecta un modelo idílico de una mujer, esto tiene varios problemas: omitamos la falta de representación intercultural, centrémonos en el retrato de la princesa, como siempre es perfecta y no puede fallar, cual es el mensaje se le da a las niñas, que en su vida todo es idilico y no hay nada por lo que se deban esforzar, por que son mejor que los demás, o que su apariencia física es lo mejor de ellas.
Pero existe un problema que se omite hoy en día, con este tipo de personajes, y es que en una historia estos personajes pasan a ser relegados porque están en un altar tan alto, que nada les puede afectar, salvo que un factor de carácter externo les perturbe, y por ser un personaje tan perfecto, el desarrollo se centra en su contraparte, lo que quiere decir es que el villano se convierte en el eje central de la historia, y es ese personaje con el que se conecta mas la gente por que hay un seguimiento a su historia.
Lo que en un principio empieza como una sobre protección a un personaje para favorecer una narrativa, no solo inicia cuando es incapaz de defenderse a si misma, y necesita cuidado constante, si no cuando se le otorga habilidades ilimitadas, por que castra al personaje, y entonces no va codo con codo, con los demás, si no que se vuelve estática, un objeto decorativo que todos los demás solo anhelan, la excluye de la narrativa.
En resumen, lo que en su afán por ensalzar el feminismo toxico actual, se deja sin razón al personaje, ya que no hay espacio para un conflicto interno, por tanto su motivación debe ser externa a ella, lo que deriva en que el personaje tenga que girar en torno a otro personaje dentro de la historia, y ya que en la trama los personajes relevante son hombres, la razón de ser del personaje dentro de la historia es enfocarse en estos, lo quiere decir que es una mujer buscando hombres abusivos, para ser siempre la victima – heroína, esto es despreciable en una sociedad tan violenta como en la cual vivimos día a día.
En vez de focalizar estas narrativas destructivas deberían centrarse en fomentar modelos de estructura dentro de la narrativa, como una organización conjunta con los reinos, una interpol, por así decirlo, tratados, acuerdos comerciales, el mundo no es blanco y negro, y construir narrativas mas estructuradas no es inviable en una película infantil
Me parece que la película deja la puerta abierta a un universo mas interesante y divertido, siempre y cuando los guionistas escriban un mundo tridimensional y no se dediquen a reciclar historias… Expand

So i watched the movie at the weekend and i am not impressed. Yes you can watch the movie and have a good time. Saw it 7 times in the theatre and loved it everytime! Gotta love Chris Pratt and his performance. Super Mario Bros. is a fun movie with some questionable writing and directing decisions. I hated that they got rid of Mario and Luigi’s accents. I hated that they got rid of Mario and Luigi’s accents. They don’t sound like they are from Brooklyn at all; instead, they sound like generic actors in Hollywood. It was such a downer. The actors did a fine job; they probably all played Nintendo growing up and were happy to have a part in a real Mario movie. Jack Black was great as Bowser and I really liked Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. The writing can be pretty cringey at times, but not too bad for a kids movie. Don't expect Inside Out or Spirited Away quality writing here. It’s about Sonic and Lego quality.

That is really all the negatives. Even though I hated that they got rid of the Plumber's accents, the movie was so entertaining that it didn't bother me too much by the ending. The movie is very funny. It had me cracking up throughout. The lines this little blue star thing was saying was hilarious. They did great on fusing the different games together. It is like they combined Mario Bros, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros. The cinematography in this movie is really good as well. It feels like a platform game with all the different 2D and 3D camera angles they implement. The music was pretty good, though the song for the Rocky/Creed training montage had me thinking of Shrek 2 the entire time. There are millions of songs, it would probably be good to add stuff people aren't going to associate with one of the most popular animated films of all time.

Unlike the garbage live-action Mario Bros. movie my generation got as kids, this actually feels like Super Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom fighting Bowser, King of the Koopas. For a family film, this is pretty fun and funny. I would like to see a sequel with better writing, more lore and world building, and more character development to keep the characters from becoming one-dimensional. Have it feel less like a generic Hollywood movie and more like a high quality Studio Ghibli or pre-woke Pixar film.… Expand

As a normal movie, this barely a 6/10. But as a MARIO movie this is definitely a 8/10. Then why did i put 9/10?

The story is bare-bones, but that's expected from a mario film. I mean, i love a deep story, but for a mario game i think its ok to have a simple, relaxing story.
If you are a mario/nintendo fan, you will be always smiling watching this film. It is FULL of easter eggs that every nintendo fan will appreciate.
I give this movie a 9/10 and not an 8/10 because i can tell nintendo put love into this movie.
If you are not a Nintendo fan, like the critics, you will definitely not like this movie and only see the bad aspects like the story and how it's so fast paced. But as a mario fan, this feels like a fun game, and a love letter to nintendo fans.

It is beyond any doubt that the Mario movie was not only made by very talented people, but also loyal fans. This is definitely NOT a generic hollywood spin-off, no matter what you might see people say. It gives us much more story than any of the games, and it surprises me how natural it was to see the characters fully voiced; I legitimately think this movie could be a standalone entry in the Mario series. Illumination Paris also did an incredible job animating it, and it's graphics are top-notch. The critics, as usual, are completely disconnected and really don't know what they're talking about. Absolutely brilliant. Not a huge nintendo fan, but did play some of the games on the N64. It is not perfect by any means, but it rewarded my inner child that had been yearning for a good mario movie. The movie gave me goosebumps and gave every character a perdonality I feel fits them perfectly.

I'm just going to be straightforward and say that the movie had more references then actual content. I'm not going to say that i didn't appreciate the references, because I did. I think the critics' reviews do not honor the film. You don't go to see Mario Bros expecting a great story arc or spectacular visual shots. It is overall a pretty good and funny movie to watch, especially in family. It's a short movie but really enjoyable and it seems it lasts 5 minutes for how funny and entertaining it is.

Lots of fun little Easter eggs from past games. Hoping they create a new game with some elements/levels/storyline from this movie. I don't know what all the fuss about the accent was. All the voice actors did a good job, even Chris Pratt. Glad they kept it as originally planned. Excessive catering to critics and fans can make things worse. (Star Wars prequels AND sequels *cough *cough). A fair nostalgic flick. Probably 4* in reality, but giving 4.5 because there really isn't much to criticize. As others have mentioned, the plot was a little simplistic, but I think they did a great job with the time they had. Probably didn't want to spend 2+ hours watching a Mario Bros. movie, so if you accept it for what it is, it is worth a watch if you are a Mario fan. Also, I never would have thought I would say this, because it's a cartoon, but I'm glad I saw it in the theater. The sound and visuals were well done and it made it far more enjoyable than if I had waited for a streaming or disc release.… Expand

Fast-paced, fun, colorful and cute! There's not a whole lot of substance or plot, but I don't think there needs to be. It made me laugh, it made me happy, it entertained me, and maybe that's more than enough for a video game movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie feels more like a theme park ride than a movie. Mario goes from one location to the next with no regard for the viewers actually taking in anything around him. It felt so unbelievable rushed and stilted that it feels like I could have written a better movie. They don't ever try to explain anything because nobody actually cares about what's happening. Why does bowser want to marry Peach? Why is Peach the only human in this world and how is she there? What is the star and why aren't there multiple of them? You don't need to know because Donkey Kong is on the screen and that's all that matters.

The only positive moment I got was from the plumbing advertisement at the beginning of the movie. The voice acting was non-existent. The voice actors read out their lines with no regard for the accents or inflections I would expect from the characters. The most egregious example was Bowser, since he sounds only like Jack Black yelling. He was a good singer in the movie, but that is expected from him since he's the singer for Tenacious D. The music was pretty good considering how easily they could have ruined the original Mario soundtrack. The movie looks so over-saturated that it is insulting to the eyes at some points. It really wants you to know it is an animated movie because everything is so unnaturally smooth and bright.

This movie is an unsurprising disappointment for anyone who isn't going only for the nostalgia trip.… Expand

Fast-paced, fun, colorful and cute! There's not a whole lot of substance or plot, but I don't think there needs to be. It made me laugh, it made me happy, it entertained me, and maybe that's more than enough for a video game movie.
