The world-building, the fan service, all of It is realized perfectly.
The characters are gold, maybe Toad a little less but overall is fantastic.

As i've been playing the Mario game since i was a kid both in my Nintendo DS and 3DS, I got a well enough knowledge of Mario Bros. To actually get the whole reference in terms of the object and the music, and that's one of the things7.5/10
As i've been playing the Mario game since i was a kid both in my Nintendo DS and 3DS, I got a well enough knowledge of Mario Bros. To actually get the whole reference in terms of the object and the music, and that's one of the things that i really like about the film, i also quite surprise by the music choosing in the film, good animation, like some of the shot especially the video game perspective angle, and of course the one that people have been most talk about is the voice acting, and i thought everybody did a good job on it, there is a couple of parts that are meh but mostly i'm perfectly fine, my problem is more on the story, it is a straight to the point film which mostly if it's happen in other movie i will absolutely love it, the thing is the story in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the most basic story that they could ever told for a movie, it is entertaining and fun but in the most basic way possible, couple of exciting and impressive scene and visual inside the most basic story of Hero vs Villain type of story, the comedy wasn't really work, couple of little giggle but there is also a couple of cheesy moment, overall The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a nice little film, flawed but still a pretty good movie with the most basic story to tell.… Expand

The people working on this movie knew what they were doing. They were making the highest-grossing videogame movie of all time. And it’s also one of the most faithful to the source material - probably because Nintendo was at their necks,The people working on this movie knew what they were doing. And it’s also one of the most faithful to the source material - probably because Nintendo was at their necks, checking if Illumination had put a fart joke in the movie somewhere.

Thank God they didn’t.

I appreciate this movie for what it is - a fun film with a lot of clever references to the series it’s adapting. Although the story isn’t so deep. But that’s not what I’m looking for in a Mario movie, of all things.

Overall, I give it a fair 7/10. Watch this movie if you can.… Expand

Making a Mario film was a huge risk but one that definitely ended up better than it could have. It is enough for me to call this film an admirable and faithful adaptation to the Nintendo gem with witty slapstick, humor, and tone; only for me to scrutinize the defeat maneuver of Bowser's defeat and maneuver of Brooklyn's save.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its good just not what was expected, plot at times felt way too easy and predictable for anything to feel impactful. One its issues is when the movie rushes into new teritories without really acknowledging the enviorment properly, like I know its targeted to kids but try to impress the hardcore fanbase of these worlds and its characters that have changed video games for the ages. But the film is really fun I will give it that, even for kids to adults you can still have a great time watching this without knowing too much about the mario franchise. Hopefully in a sequel the run time gets extended to flesh out everything with more creative styled worlds like in this one.… Expand

I was skeptical about this movie before it came out, but I went to see it in theatres and I was pleasantly surprised. Illumination really outdid themselves with this one visually, as the animation is stunning and had no need to look thisI was skeptical about this movie before it came out, but I went to see it in theatres and I was pleasantly surprised. Illumination really outdid themselves with this one visually, as the animation is stunning and had no need to look this good! The plot was pretty basic, but for a Mario movie, a deep story isn’t really needed, and it worked out here. I loved the amount of Easter eggs and references to the games, which is a Mario fan’s dream, and the orchestrated sound bits were beautiful. I was happy about most of the characters and their voice actors. I do think Chris Pratt did well with Mario even though he got mixed reception, and Charlie Day was really good as Luigi. The best character though was Bowser, as Jack Black was the perfect casting choice! He absolutely nailed it! The one character that they screwed up with though is Peach. They went too far with making her the "strong female character" to the point where she had no flaws and was kinda mean at times. This also doesn’t make sense because if that was her character, explain to me why she’s been kidnapped 1000 times. The other big flaw this movie has is that it felt a bit too fast paced at times, especially near the end. But overall, this movie was actually good and probably the best video game movie of all time since most of them suck (I’m looking at you 1993 Mario movie), and I think having Miyamoto involved with it really helped. If you are a die hard Mario fan like myself, I would definitely recommend seeing this movie!… Expand

a fan of Mario? Without a doubt, you will be thrilled. Not a fan of Mario? Well, if you enjoy brightly coloured, well-animated films, you might still enjoy this one because of its excellent animation. The plot might be the only thing thata fan of Mario? Clearly, this is what the critics think: The story and its logic are straightforward,This was going to be a brutal movie to rate, so I'm just going to say what I like and Don't like and why most critics think this movie is poopy doo doo.

Clearly, this is what the critics think:
The story and its logic are straightforward, predictable and don't make sense in some scenes.
And of course, the length of the film is short, why? Well uh, Nintendo doesn't have any money...Ok, that's a lie, they clearly played safe with this one and didn't want the characters to explore as much as they should and relied purely on nostalgia to lead the wagon.

On to other Things:
Now that all the bads are out of the way, let me say, this animation is beautiful, all the characters are represented excellently, some in more interesting ways, others pretty down to the source.

And yeah that's my review. The movie was short what did you expect it's just a simple bad guy plot and dealing with him in the end.

Maybe they should have renamed it Super Mario Bros: Origin.

8/10, I want MORE. I expect the sequel to deliver a 2hr30 animation after the box office money they made. 1 billion damn, we better get 2 more movies, and pretty long ones of course. It's time for the SMBCU to rise and destroy all animation movies just like Marvel Did with superhero movies.

Que bom foi assistir um filme divertido, com personagens bem desenvolvidos, e voces não precisaram forçar um drama, ou obrigar adorar uma etnia, e nem obrigar o publico a tatuar a sigla lgbt. Parabens, voces superaram toda a Pixar (Disney) e a Dreamworks. Como filme adaptado ao jogo, segundo por segundo eu ficava comparando ao jogo. Fidelidade incrivel. A Princesa Peach e a melhor personagem, ficou uma Princesa linda como nos jogos, legal ter adicionado ela com golpes de artes marciais, e ela fazendo speedrun no filme ficou otimo. Detalhe da Peach dormindo de cansaço, me lembrou da cena do Super Mario 64. Mario ficou um bom heroi como nos jogos, o Luigi no pouco espaço que teve tambem ficou bom, o Toad piadista e um bom personagem pra balancear o filme, o Bowser tocando piano foi a melhor cena dele, o kamek tambem ficou fiel aos jogos, os penguins guerreiros e comico, o Donkey Kong frenetico ficou parecido aos jogos, Lumalee tambem ficou um personagem adoravel, e foi muito bom ver o Diddy e Dixie. Foi legal escutar as classicas musicas dos jogos no filme. Por mim esse filme levaria o Oscar de melhor animação, melhor direção, melhor roteiro adaptado e canção original.
Pontos negativos. Durante o filme, quando as musicas do Konji Kondo terminava, eu pensava "podia durar mais segundos". Não gostei de musicas famosas no filme, (AC/DC Take on Me) odiei. Tantos jogos do Mario, repletas de musicas incriveis, e voces colocam musicas de banda. E como a Princesa Peach e a melhor personagem, acho que ficou faltando mais cenas dela. E me acostumei tanto ver a Peach beijando o Mario apos ser salva, que esperei isso no final do filme.

Great movie.

Gorgeous animation filled with many fun scenes and so many references to the games, the nostalgia hits so hard. I think it is the movie with the most references that I ever saw, so I can see why so many people are angry, if IGreat movie.

Despite me not "super-loving" the movie, I think it was well-done, and I could tell it would appeal very well to Mario fans, and I'm very happy that is already proven now that it grossed over 400 million worldwide just 6 days after release. :)… Expand

It feels like they took the best of Mario over the years, smooshed it all into a giant ball of happiness. They did a truly excellent job of making me feel like I was in the Super Mario universe. It's rare that I find a movie that I'd rewatch these days but I'll be coming back to this one many times.

They need to make this into a game. BoTW/Totk but for Mario. Lands where you platform. Lands where you can battle gorillas. Lands where you can race. No really, Nintendo, if you're listening, do it.… Expand

It’s less a film and more of an hour and a half cutscene from a game. And I’m just fine with that. Mario will undoubtably appeal to kids, but it’s real target audience is fans of the series, which it should be first and foremost. I’d call the story more basic than paper thin, as it has been called elsewhere, as it carries enough motivation from all the characters to keep it together and moving; never getting bogged down. Voice acting for the most part is solid aside from Seth Rogen, but Jack Black as Bowser is the real show stealer. Visually, it’s a treat, with a bright color palette that doesn’t overwhelm the senses. The soundtrack is a good blend of original OST mixed with the classic video game music and the hit single by Bowser is a blast. I did find some of the licensed tracks odd, but never fully out of place. Overall, The Super Mario Bros is akin to a restaurant bringing you exactly what you ordered and not insulting you for ordering it. It’s not deep or thought provoking, but it will leave you satisfied as a fan.… Expand

After joining Princess Peach on a mission to protect her kingdom from the clutches of the tyrant, Bowser, Mario’s own quest to rescue and reunite with his brother sees his resolve and fortitude tested time and again. Though the movie doesn’t hold back on slapstick situations that constantly put him on the back foot, his determination to always get back up no matter the odds carries him all the way into the finale; where it ultimately falls to him to save the Mushroom Kingdom. One factor that helps this basic plot to unfold well and feel like a grand adventure is the respect taken to ensure elements are properly set up. For example, the strong bond between the brothers is reinforced several times early in the film both before and during their separation to drive home the point that Mario will never give up on Luigi, no matter how many insults and bruises he has to endure. Another point is that the narrative never drags with needless, indulgent filler for the sake of dropping Easter Eggs not pertinent to the plot. In fact, the multitude of novel references placed into the film are positioned as such to seamlessly accommodate the world building and environment; thereby succeeding in appealing to fans while also expanding upon the experience.

As for the key characters, most were represented exceedingly well. As mentioned previously, Mario’s commitment and loyalty to his younger brother is out at the forefront of his motivations. This, combined with his tenacity to always go another round create a sympathetic main character that everyone wants to cheer for: making his triumphs all the more enjoyable. Likewise, Luigi’s depiction as a timid follower struggling to find his courage lended itself well to the scenario’s he found himself in; setting up an inner conflict that was rewarding to watch unfold. As for Princess Peach, there is a bit more nuance in fully understanding her role. At first glance, her actions early in the film seem to paint her as an overconfident warrior-princess who can be the best at everything she puts her mind to just because the plot needs her to be; though that cursory form of analyses doesn’t hold up for long. Her mildly bitter first encounter with Mario is laced with enough touches of sympathy to allow for a more genuine reflection of her true intentions, and her rigidity overall declines rapidly soon after as she maintains the role of a team player that is not immune to making mistakes. That is all to say, she never outshines Mario. Bowser, on the other hand, comes close to stealing the show due to his equal measures of goofy, romantic inclinations and hair-trigger rage; an iconic juxtaposition he is known well for within the series. Additionally, there is never a point where his feelings for Peach undercut the threat he poses when crossed. This leads to him ultimately being a villain that is both enjoyable and humorous, though also worthy of testing the protagonist’s strength when the time comes to throw down the gauntlet. Lastly, Donkey Kong made for a decent addition overall, though Seth Rogan could have done more to bring his presence to the screen. Compared to the outstanding job Chris Pratt did for Mario, Jack Black did for Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy did for Peach, it left much to be desired.

The quality of the animation and soundtrack was phenomenal from start to finish, and it was evident how much time was taken to properly bring the unique facets of the Mario universe to the silver screen. As an additional point of praise, Illumination withheld placing any of it’s oft-seen Minion’s humor into the film. Though comedy is mostly subjective, and many young audiences enjoy that form of levity, it would have been completely out of place and the film would have likely suffered for it. Instead, the humor feels more in line with how it is handled in the Mario spin-off games, which made the overall presentation feel more authentic.

In summary, the movie best succeeds in its appeal to all applicable audiences. Adults who grew up with the earliest Mario titles will savor and appreciate the nostalgic elements that were carefully woven into the film, while children and other audience members not familiar with the Mario Bros. franchise will still enjoy the experience for what it is.… Expand

Hard to be mad at this movie as someone who grew up with Mario and that squad. My only nitpicks were not enough Luigi screen time and Chris Pratt was a trash choice to voice Mario.

The movie is less a Mario movie and more a Peach and Toad movie, the power ups also kinda turn it into a Superman movie which felt odd and for a character who is known for getting kidnapped it's strange that Peach doesn't get kidnapped at any point also when the hell did Luigi learn to move/fight like that being that he spent like 90% of the movie in a cage. It's also a odd choice to have the movie mainly be about Mario unknowingly cucking Bowser
Character wise Mario and Toad are good there wasn't anything i didn't like about them, not saying i loved them there's just nothing i disliked about them even there voices were fine, Luigi was barely in the movie, Peach felt more like Daisy and it was kinda her movie which that lass part is fine but i was just waiting the whole movie for her to pull off her wig and say "it was i Daisy the whole time",even tho i ship Bowser and Peach it just feels weird here with the plot mainly being Bowser getting cucked, DK and related charcters are just a joke and i really didn't care for them there really just there to move the plot with most of them getting kidnapped and DK is just there to fight Mario and to give Mario someone to bounce off of sometimes literally.… Expand

Die Welt von Mario und seinen Freunden ist perfekt gelungen und wurde sehr akkurat umgesetzt. Die Synchro ist auch super, obwohl ich mich zu erst an die Stimme von Peach gewöhnen musste. Die Charaktere werden genauer erzählt, so sieht man die Eltern von Mario und Luigi und wie sie außerhalb des Pilzkönigreichs wahrgenommen werden. Anfangs war es komisch, die beiden in New York zu sehen, aber es war kein Problem. Die Umsetzung von der Umgebung, welche auch Hindernisse darstellt und Mario diese im Jump & Run Style umspringt, ist super. Wer mir besonders gefallen hat, ist Peach, als mutige und starke Prinzessin und nicht so hilflos wie in den Spielen. Der Film geht sehr schnell vorbei und fühlt sich sehr kurz an. Ich hätte gerne noch mehr gesehen, aber es werden noch andere Filme kommen und darauf kann man sich freuen. Der Humor ist auch sehr gut getroffen und es gibt auch ein paar emotionale Momente, die gut funktionieren. Der Super Mario Bros Film ist ein Muss für alle Mario Fans.

I really liked the part where Mario and Luigi grabbed the star power-up. And the peaches song was just perfection. The only bad things would be that most of the main characters are not played by their original voice actors. They didn’t do that bad of a job, I will say. And Donkey Kong is Cranky Kong’s grandson. Other than the bad things about the movie, it was a true masterpiece. Probably one of the most greatest video game movie adaptations I’ve seen.… Expand

I absolutely LOVED the movie, I’d give it a 10/10, Ive been a Mario fan since I was a kid, which I think people who grew up with Mario will like the movie more than newcomers, however that doesn’t make it a bad thing for the newcomers as itI absolutely LOVED the movie, I’d give it a 10/10, Ive been a Mario fan since I was a kid, which I think people who grew up with Mario will like the movie more than newcomers, however that doesn’t make it a bad thing for the newcomers as it introduces he characters in a very nice way, the references in the movie were fantastic, the ideas and plot was well put together, although it is an entry movie. It is also a bit fast paced. There are also some scenes where if you have grown up with Mario and is quite sensetive, could get quite touching. To round it all up, I think it is a movie everyone should watch at least once. Also it is the best video game movie… Expand

This movie is how I wished every game movie is like that. First off if you’re not familiar with Nintendo the Mario bros franchise this is a generic movie for you but if you a fan 100% worth it. There a so many Easter eggs you need 3 eyes to see all. and I guess even than you miss a lot in the sonic movie you can put speedy Gonzales in sonics position and it the same movie because it has no real connection to the sonic universe but the Mario movie the mario movie is different. if you have played mario Odyssey I think you a ready for the movie this Game is so the the base knowledge but so more you know from the Nintendo universe so more secrets you find I love this movie and I want to see it a second time.

I have heard that it is for a few people to fast plot changes and if you doesn’t look for a few seconds you miss key elements and sure it is a fast movie but if you really watch it it is okay. If I could make a zero to one hundred points I would give it a 87/100 good job Nintendo universal and Lucas film oh by the way Lucas films the Musik that they make for that movie is 90% of the time old Nintendo tracks but in a new beautiful movie version and I love it Bonus things: It is a 6+ movie with but thanks god this doesn’t mean it is a kids movie no my favourite character was the luma and everyone that have seen the movie know what I mean 3d is good it’s not this crazy I stand 2 inch bevor you 3d No it’s a normal depth 3d so nothing special and nothing too extrem There Is a After cutscene after the black credits There was mir but I have forgot what I want write idk but the water looks good in this movie and the movie too sure but THE WATER. it’s a fan movie and good at this… Expand

2. Animation and CGi is really impressive, the character models look great also.
3. The cast including Chris Pratt and Jack Black are funny especially the latter who sang “Peaches” which is a great song.
4. This is just critic’s opinion that they hated the amount of easter eggs, but it will make fans of the Mario series remember what they saw.
Bonus: At the end, I showed my father to stay to watch the post-credit scene and when he heard the word “YOSHI!” He laughed about it because he likes Yoshi.
Although I am mad that Wario and Waluigi did not appear in the film, it was an awesome night and probably that biggest movie night I had because my friends, their parents, their grandmother, my parents, my younger sister, my older sister, and her boyfriend. It was OP… Expand

Creo que a los fans de la saga les va a gustar mucho por la cantidad de referencias que tiene y por toda la expansión del "lore" del universo de Mario, llegando a mostrar incluso Brooklyn al principio de la misma y algunos otros detalles muy interesantes. Me han gustado mucho los guiños a Mario y Nintendo presentes en todo momento. Pienso que es una película algo infantil, no busca ser seria y va dirigida a un público concreto (familias y fans, como he dicho antes). No por ello la califico como mala, de hecho es muy entretenida y si solo quieres "pasar el rato" la vas disfrutar verdaderamente. Lo peor de la película es que es demasiado corta, me ha sabido a poco, me hubiera gustado que hubiesen ampliado un poco más diferentes aspectos que realmente lo merecían. Awesome movie! I felt like a little kid again. I wish there was more of Yoshi but other than that This movie is great and I definitely recommend to any viewer, Mario fan or not!
I will be adding this to my movie collection soon!

I really loved the movie, Nintendo made an effort making this Super Mario Bros. movie, well, although the movie is enjoyable, I don't understand why they don't give it the rating it deserves

I have to admit, I didn't think Illumination could pull it off! It's an amazing 1st uh... 2nd attempt at making a Mario movie! The animation is amazing and the characters have great personalities (although, it took me some time to get used toI have to admit, I didn't think Illumination could pull it off! Such a pleasure to see this movie as a diehard fan of franchise, the referencias in the background, the music, the characters, such a good movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is definitely aimed towards kids, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. As a Mario fan, I thought the movie was very enjoyable. It was packed full of the Nintendo references and nostalgic charm that I hoped it would have. Luigi being the "damsel in distress" was an interesting change but not a bad one at all. The thing I more had issues with was the paper thin plot and pacing issues. The really great things about the movie are the animation and voice acting. Surprisingly, Chris Pratt didn't ruin Mario. I thought his performance was very good. The character with the best voice, however, was definitely Jack Black as Bowser. Jack is a person with a big attitude, and it fits very well for a character like Bowser.

Even with some of the issues it has, I believe all Mario fans, young and old, should go and see this movie because of the nostalgia factor it has. Also, critics suck.… Expand

So many easter eggs had a great time finding all of them. They found a good balance between peach being capable but not overtaking mario in the mario movie.
