It's okay but nothing special. The story was like a typical Super Mario story. Some jokes were cool.

Its really just meh..... wait to pirate, download or get it cheap. really wanted to like it as a lifelong Nintendo fan, but the movie felt hollow and lifeless. The highlights were hearing Koji Kondo's themes, though they lasted mere seconds and were trodden down by Brian Tyler's uninspired trailer music and random forced pop music.

The story and characters seemed to be written by people who didn't play the games and were hoping throwing fanservice in would make a lot of easy money. They weren't wrong, but I hope that the next film gets better writers and more fitting English voice actors like Jack Black was for Bowser

I have to be honest, this movie would have been far better if the voice actors had been better. Donkey Kong was just Seth Rogan, Mario was just Chris Pratt with a slight accent/voice.
They just sounded like the celebrities rather than the characters I know and that removed me from the experience.

I also felt like they could've done so much more with the source material, so many missed opportunities for references and ways to blend story and game together.

I feel like a load of executives influenced the film and it wouldn't surprise me if those executives were more on the Illumination side of things, rather than the Nintendo side.

It wasn't entirely unpleasant, it got some laughs and I enjoyed a fair amount of the film. But it just could have been so much better.

If I was an 8 year old kid, the film was a riot and great, 9 or 10.
As an older fan of the games, could've been better.

Nintendo played it safe here. Mario punches blocks, DK throws barrels, and Luigi exists as a plot device.

I'm truly conflicted. (watched on Amazon Prime)

Cinematography: Visuals are literal eye candy, although there is a lack of diversity that causes it to become paradoxically bland 1/4th into the film. The palette is shockingly narrow. Some scenes have a lot of detail, but they don't remain on screen for too long. The "magic world" doesn't have as much texture detail as the "real world". Some visuals are 100/100 - but the whole package due to lack of diversity gets a 60/100 - by the end of the movie the visuals are tired - don't want to watch another movie like this ever again tragically.

Story: There is no real story, characters are one dimensional - especially peach - the plot is so mind numbingly basic and crammed together. I think what bothers me the most is that it isn't how I imagined these characters at all or the story of the games. The movie doesn't take itself seriously.

Casting: I think the most disappointing thing was that Jack Black and Seth Rogan broke immersion by inserting tenacious D and pineapple express moments - not once but continuously. Donkey Kong has an obnoxious Seth Rogan stoner laugh, Bowser is Jack Black with an attitude. Again the movie doesn't take itself seriously.

Overall: Very short movie, crammed together, vapid, visually stunning at first but by the end nauseating and bland; leaves an odd dissatisfaction/void at the end that is even commented on by the movie itself. Only some cool visuals every few minutes and homages to the games hold this together, but otherwise is a complete rainbow mess that doesn't take itself seriously. I was holding out hope until the ending; would've given it an 8 out of 10 - but the way it ended - 4 out of 10.

"Dissatisfying".

Cheesy pop tunes pull you out of the movie, which are especially strange considering the insane catalogue of music they have and the inhouse music talent of Nintendo that must have been at their disposal. Then there's the bone dry plot, it's blander than plain cottage cheese and dry chicken breast, basically the only exciting part is Jack Black's Bowser. THEN there's the mediocre voice acting, they seriously went with Chris Pratt solely because he is a big name, they should have gotten a more mario-esque voice. Probably could have just let Jack Black do the voice and it would have sounded better honestly.

You know if this is one of your first rodeo's with animated movies I can see why it could be a 10 or a 9. However after 30 years of enjoying animated movies, I've just seen this movie a dozen times. Which doesn't make it inherently bad, it's just lazy IMO. This movie is a fun colorful way to spend an hour and a half, but that's about it. If this movie did not have the Mario name behind it people would be ignoring it completely.

TL;DR Fun movie but way too generic, terrible pop music, and the only great voice actor is Jack Black.

PROS:
-The look of this movie is beautiful - especially the Mushroom Kingdom environment - and the characters are just as great looking as they are entertaining to watch.
-Jack Black is perfectly cast in the role of Bowser.
-The story, simple as it is, is a breath of fresh air from more recent releases that seemed to rely on being incredibly convoluted at times.
-The action was incredibly fun to sit through, enhanced by the stunning visuals of course.
-The music was great to listen to throughout the whole thing; the combination of original music and Koji Kondo's themes from the video games were brought together beautifully in this film. Heck, even some of the songs they used worked well.

CONS:
-The overall casting, while not bad (see my mention of Jablinksi above), didn't really impress me all that much. Some bits of dialogue just felt awkward to me with the way they were delivered too. I can at least forgive it though, since it's in some part because...
-The script for this movie is not particularly well-written and the film moves along much quicker than it really needed to. Some lines, and scenes, are much too quick and to the point throughout the film, just giving you a Cliff Notes version of what each scene is supposed to contain when they could've been expanded on more.
-Characters like Toad and D.K. didn't really feel like they were all that necessary at times, which really hampers the movie a bit. It doesn't help that Keegan-Michael Key as Toad is annoying at times, and Seth Rogan is just playing himself but as a giant gorilla with a tie.
-Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong...is just there.
-Mario and Luigi, despite being the film’s titular main characters, don’t get to really do a lot together before they’re separated or even after they’ve reunited. This movie was just a Mario movie with Luigi as a side character (though that’s not all too surprising).
-The use of some songs (like A-Ha’s “Take on Me”) didn’t really feel like they needed to be there, and it didn’t help that an original composition from Brian Tyler was cut from the final film to be replaced with that. “D.K. Rap” also didn’t really feel like it belonged there, at least not to me.

Overall, it's not the greatest movie I've seen, but it's not the worst either (despite what Grace Randolph or other stuck-up critics would tell you).

The story is bland and not exciting, which is especially surprising for an illumination project. The Voice acting is mostly unmemorable except for Jack Black as Bowser.

With its short runtime, the movie rushes from location to location (this helps with the thin plot) and by the end a hurrah isn't guaranteed. There's no character development, and the backstory to most of the characters is missing.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one that caters to the fanbase of the games but not to a general audience.

First part of the movie is okay, although I don't know why they're doubling down on Luigi being a coward.

Writing feels like they forgot what they were doing later on. First half shows Mario being a very capable parkour athlete and then later on when he needs to progress an obstacle course and then shows him beefing it nonstop. I thought Bowser was this big huge threat, but whatever, let's just waste time.

It feels like they focused on video game elements instead of story telling with this film, so as long as you like watching a movie emulate mario kart you'll be very happy.

Con:
The voice acting is the typical soulless Hollywood style (Except for Jack Black's performance on Bowser, he is great). Why can't they just hire the original game voice actor? Why is the video game industry so obsessed with Hollywood?
Some of the music is downright lazy and unoriginal, especially when they have so much good Mario music to choose from. But no, they choose the most overused and cliche American pop song, yes, they are good songs, but they just wouldn't fit.

Neutral:
The plot is brainlessly simple without any twist, but I wouldn't hold it against them. Hey, that's a kid movie, just turn off your brain and enjoy it with your family.

The sounds, visuals and fan service were great. But the plot is awful and honestly ruins the movie. I wish they would have just kept the original stories of Peach being kidnapped from the very start and Mario having to go on a grand adventure to save her. They could have used various worlds in lots of cool ways and introduced us to all the characters and villains throughout the movie as he goes through a few worlds. Let’s chill out as fans because we actually deserve so much better then what was given to us. Just because Mario himself was on a big screen and we were given all the proper nostalgic moments doesn’t mean the movie was good. 5/10 movie and the critics were right. The movie is not very good. The thing is that the script, the plot is built for ages 8-13. Yes, adults can relish in the high-tech animation and enjoy nostalgic pop songs like "Take on Me" and ELO's "Mr Blue Sky" which leads into final credits, but most of the situations and certainly the fight physics are ludicrous, unless you're ages 8-13. The voice cast is comprised of A-list actors but they either can't do voice overs or they just didn't try, and you know why? There was not one credit for voice director or coach! A gazillion credits listed for animators, artists, musicians, and even a credit for a sole intern(!) but not a voice director. Young kids and their parents will certainly give high scores and they're the ones that led this film to its $1.3B w/w box office haul, but for everyone else, it's just a meh thing. Expand

I guess. but then they actually DO put charles martinet in as a side character as if to say "hey! we know you want him voicing mario but we're not going to do that!" jack black and charlie day did do incredible jobs. princess peaches' voice actor was fine. overral, a movie that exists. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While this movie is a fun time and the references are cool if you turn your brain off, if you want plot, character depth or any of the other things that made movies like Aladdin or the lion king interesting look elsewhere, this movie is a shallow advertisement with all the character development of a sports game, peach is improved from her game counterpart but that's a low bar, as is everything else about the characters, bowser is a simp who's interesting in the first scene he's shown in and nowhere else he's not threatening, and not cool, he's stupid and comic relief most of the time, the top quality animation does little to distract from the stupid licensed songs that have no right to be there, the voices of bowser toad and Luigi are good, but peaches voice feels out of place but still good enough and Mario's voice is awful, the pacing is all out of whack and with the run time the entire half of the movie spent getting the Kong army is rendered pointless by an explosion dropping them into the sea, Luigi miraculously stops being afraid the second Mario drops in instead of shining some light on a character arc,
not a single character in the movie has an arc, they're only slightly less static than their game counterparts, I didn't expect Aladdin level story, but I did expect at least characters with more depth than cardboard.

This truly is a movie made for fans and is an excellent movie for families because of how fun it is. The animation is amazing as well, which should further incentivize you to go out and watch it.

Edit: After a couple of months I decided to bump my score down a bit since the film itself is very just middle of the road after thinking about it, I think it should've took more queues from the RPGs and had more luigi scenes, and more substance in general.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to love this, but it turned out to be only ok. My favorite aspects: when they actually featured beloved, familiar music from the Mario games (not often enough!), and seeing familiar characters from the Mario games. My least favorite aspects of the movie are the unnecessary non-Mario music clips and hyper-aggro Princess Peach. This movie could have been improved immensely if the princess were imprisoned like she is in the games, and we got a story about the adventures of the two brothers Mario and Luigi going on an adventure to find her. The fact they make Peach a one woman army breaks the logic of why she would team up with Mario and need the help of Donkey Kong's army. As it is, the movie plot is a mishmash of random stuff. Could have been much better. Oh, well. Expand

It is difficult for me to form a truly individual opinion on this movie, as there have been numerous people (critics and non-critics alike) espousing their opinion on this movie.

For what one person's opinion on this movie is worth: It is a visually appealing movie with some very by-the-numbers plot points. The attempt to squish any sort of true depth into 90-ish minutes was doomed from the start, which left me pretty dissatisfied on that note. The ending, in particular, felt egregiously abrupt.

Overall, this is a slightly above-par Illumination movie that relies heavily on nostalgia in an attempt to appeal to adults, while presenting many elements that would likely enthral younger audiences. The lack of too many moments that felt like corporate attempts at pandering was a relief, but the lack of anything that bore true emotional weight is lamentable.

I do have a theory, that Nintendo MIGHT be eventually making a Mario Movie 2, which will include more.

I'm also somewhat disappointed that by the end Mario and Peach weren't confirmed to be a couple, like I don't want a passionate romantic scene or anything, maybe just a little kiss, like most movies do when the princess is saved or whatever.

So, to recap, could've had more characters, could've used certain characters more, Mario and Peach could've got confirmed to be a couple.

The film is full of references to the video games of the plumber without displeasing us despite a duration that is minimal and that is the problem. The film is too rhythmic and seems to be screwed, not by its animation which is grandiose but by its scenario which goes quickly in work without fully exploiting the characters of Nintendo. Note a OST that will thrill the ears and chara-designs of the characters respecting both the franchise. But as a film, Super Mario Bros does not transcend and is ruined by the trailers which in the end represent almost the whole film. Expand

But if you're hoping this movie might be a step above your standard Illumination film, you'll be sorely disappointed.

It's a loosely-plotted sugar rush with great animation and a serviceable voice cast and soundtrack. As a "movie" though, it feels more like a 92 minute commercial for the games than a genuine movie. The movie has pacing issues to where it goes by too quickly. The movie goes from one set piece to another in quick and rapid progression. It hardly slows down to give the viewer a chance to breathe and process the events of the plot, the locations and the characters. There are some heartfelt moments here and there, but they're very brief and also insignificant overall because the movie itself forgets them altogether. The characters just aren't fleshed out well enough to make me even care much about them.

I would've liked to see more detail on Peach's backstory and how it affects her emotionally, why Bowser is so fixated on marrying Peach and conquering the world, how Mario and Luigi's family reacted to them being gone for so long, more interactions between Mario and Luigi, more interactions between Mario and Peach, more interactions between Mario and Toad, more screen time for events in Brooklyn, etc... The lackluster world-building is especially a problem to me because of how it incorporates many elements (floating bricks, floating platforms, warp pipes and power-ups) from the games into the movie at the expense of their logic not being explained well enough for non-Mario fans. A non-Mario fan would typically have so many questions about how things work in the Mushroom Kingdom, but the movie leaves so much unexplained and just expects you to tolerate it. The movie can be too faithful to the games at times.

By being too faithful, I mean its emphasis on references and easter eggs for the sake of them being there without much logic or reason to the point of it alienating the casual audience. This movie pulls no punches in bombarding you with references to the video games to where it has no grasp on subtlety. As a Mario fan, it may be somewhat fun pointing out those references and easter eggs, but when I'm more focused on the writing, plot and characterization, it's a very bland and unimaginative experience for a hero's journey film.

All-in-all, the movie is just average to me. It's not a bad movie, but it's far from good and leaves a lot to be desired in terms of its writing, characterization and world-building. This movie is a perfect example for why video game movie adaptations need to do a lot more than simply incorporating elements from the source material. As a movie, it needs to have a substantive plot to it, along with good characterization and themes, so I can feel emotionally invested in it overall. I don't care that it's "about Mario" or that it's "for kids", even though it's clearly geared towards Mario fans of all ages and there are much better written films than the Mario Movie like the LEGO movie, Angry Birds movie, and of course, the Sonic movies. Nintendo played it too safe with this movie and focused so much on fan service, references and easter eggs while refusing to actually make a movie that's accessible to the general audience. That's a major failure for the movie overall and makes it come off as soulless and corporate, since as I previously stated, the movie really is more of a 92 minute commercial for the video games and the brand than a genuine movie. It's because of that, I refuse to give this movie any higher of a rating than a 5.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie could have seriously used a 1-up with how this film turned out.

The pacing felt like those segments in Mario where you get the Star power-up in the games; fast-paced, little-to-no actual conflict or suspense since everything is too easy, and it's all over before you know it.

The worst part was the actors. The vast majority of the English cast did not match their roles in the slightest, especially Chris Pratt as Mario and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong (...really?). Hollywood needs to get out of the bad habit of only hiring A-list celebrities for big projects and bring on actual talent that will get the job well done.

The movie's only saving grace is its animation, design, and action sequences. They're definitely very visually appealing to watch while they last, but the lacking plot that doesn't honour what the original games were all about did not make them as intense or impactful as they could have been.

In short, if you're a huge Mario fan or a kid that's looking for a cheap thrill, this is definitely it. But if you're looking for a quality cinematic experience, this certainly isn't it.

This movie does not feel like a product of Nintendo, but rather like a somewhat okay cartoon but with a Nintendo license tacked on - and why is that?

Nintendo has managed to stay relevant across several generations now, because they’ve always been great at utilizing their history to cater to the longtime fans, while still making experiences that are welcoming to newcomers. The Mario franchise has always been the poster child for this approach, recently using a formula of having a main quest that gets deeper and more complicated the further you get, teaching the player new skills along the way, but never so hard that you can’t finish it, while also providing optional content that is intended mostly for the people who have played since the 80s/90s.
This design philosophy holds true in pretty much all 1st party Nintendo games that have been released since the GameCube era, but this approach is in no way captured in the Super Mario Bros Movie, and I think that’s what’s missing here.

Of course, you can’t translate gameplay directly to a story, especially given how barebones Nintendo’s general storytelling is in the first place, but the Mario movie feels like it introduces a great level 1, a decent level 2 but then never moves on to level 3, but just stays in the easy, comfortable zone where everything is still on autopilot. This is, however, probably a choice made by the director, because this is a movie that is 100% intended for kids, ages 5-12, so they can buy tons of merchandise and tickets for Super Nintendo World, and personally, I think that’s a damn shame when Nintendo has managed to pull off bridging the gap between several generations for so long, even though some franchises, like Mario, obviously still has a bigger appeal to children. It’s a choice made with money in mind, but it would have been totally possible to make something more impactful, that could have been more than a 90 minute commercial. Lego Movie did it flawlessly, and showed us how to interweave nostalgia, whimsy and childish humor into a seamless blend for all ages.

The Mario movie just goes hardcore on the whimsy, in a stupid, unfunny way (most of the jokes are just TERRIBLE, and don’t get me started on Bowsers cringy song… ugh), while they put in a TON of easter eggs in an effort to please the adults. In some situations this works, but it could have been so much more, and so, the movie ends up feeling very disappointing. I was totally expecting I would cry by the end of this thing; I mean, I cried when I reached New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey; but this movie did not even manage to give me goosebumps. I felt nothing, to be honest. The characters and story are about as deep as the original 2D game.

Also, the voice acting just never clicked with me. These versions of Mario & Co are all pretty bland, except maybe Jack Black as Bowser: but honestly, I think the only reason he shines through, is because he is the only voice that seems to somewhat match the character he portrays. He doesn’t feel as off, as all the other voices. Worst of all is Cranky Kong. Like, what the hell? At least give the character a voice that matches their body type. 5/10 from me.
Had this been a theme park ride, it would’ve been pretty good; it’s beautiful, the soundtrack is pretty great and the fan service is fantastic. The story however is paper thin, and there’s just. so much wasted potential, resulting in a weird product that fails in being a movie, but succeeds in being a cool visual experience if you like the Mario universe already. Just don’t expect Nintendo magic, or any actual, you know, plot.

Playing Mario Bros is fun because of its simplicity, even in the difficult levels that managed to drive you crazy, but to say that in its dynamics there was some kind of story to tell with those characters would be a monumental lie.

Having said that, this film plays on a terrain that puts it in a tricky situation if we are going to pay attention to anything beyond the profitable financial business it will become.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a kid's movie. No matter what angle you look at it from. Even if you're 50 or older and love the character.
It's a kid's movie filled with just enough humor and fan-service expectations to appeal to general audiences.

It's true that there are children's movies that work better for all audiences, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn't have that.
It doesn't have that because of its limitations, and that's because it all comes down to something elementary yet 100% crucial.
If you want to go see a movie about something that you can play and that I think you'll be more entertained doing it, what's the point of having something inferior to that experience?

Perhaps the only obstacle to this is that you don't have a Nintendo console. Otherwise, I'd say you'd better look for any Mario game and you'll have a better time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is definitely not a 10/10 movie as a lot of people seem to be giving it and the people downvoting any review that isn't a 10/10. It seems for these people all the movie had to do was have Mario jump with the Mario jumping sound, hit a coin box with the coin sound and eat a mushroom and they would have given it a 10/10. The plot is as basic as the Mario games, Peach/Luigi gets captured by Bowser and Mario has to save them. That's it, that's the story. There's no character development. In the beginning Mario is portrayed as a failure but he never fails at anything other than the montage. He becomes an expert with every new powerup he receives within a few seconds. Peach is more perfect than Mario, beat the montage level Mario failed at first try, no development. Donkey Kong is just the jealous jerk/bully because Mario beat him.

The worst part is that they got A-lister hollywood actors that don't do voice acting. All the character voices are just the A-listers doing their regular voice. Jack Black with Bowser and Fred Armisen with Cranky Kong being the few exceptions. Seth Rogen did a huge disservice to Donkey Kong, basically just using his regular voice and laugh which is really distinct. Being a Nintendo fan that has been playing since the original playing Mario and Donkey Kong on everything from the Nintendo to gameboy to 3ds to Gamecube to the switch, characters that were given distinct and unique voices that matched their characters had hollow voice performances by actors like Seth Rogen that were just using their regular voice was very very disappointing.

This movie is just an average movie that leans heavily on the success and global recognition of Mario from the video games. Nintendo phoned this one in, of course their loyal fanbase will defend it to their dying breath with 10/10 reviews and rake in cash from the global recognition of the characters from Nintendo's video games.

It's cool Nintendo is doing movies, seems like it is something they should have done, even though their games basically have no story. Would love a Zelda movie, hopefully one that isn't just cookie cutter like this one filled with things like Link breaking pots.

Story: [5/10] Boring and predictable. Only a few laughs. The art and animation was very well done with really great use of color and environments. The overuse of machines (karts) felt out of place for a Mario film.

Sound Track: [7/10]

Sound Track: [7/10] Nostaglia mixed in with the most derivative overused pop songs. The original song was entertaining.

Conversation: Chris Pratt was poorly cast but he was NOT the worst part of the film and did not really distract... he did his job and I did not notice him.

The story try to incorporate the game into a real world setting. And it does a pretty good job at it. However it is clearly targeted for children and Nintendo fans. It does help to have played those Mario's games, because there is a lot of reference to them. For an adult, the magic wears off after a while. That said, the visual style is perfect. The voices are fine. Peach facial animation, wasn't very natural for some reason. The music was in the theme. I give it 65%. I got bored after the initial reveals, but then again, I am just an average fan of Nintendo, and not the target audience. Expand

Movie is a frustratingly average movie that could have been so much more. Despite me being a life-long Mario fan, no amount of fanservice can make me overlook the shockingly apparent flaws that this movie wears on its sleeve. Expand

I'm not saying the story should be complex or dark, but that thing is, it should be at least funny, and it is not.

I can appreciate Nintendo+Ilumination for not put any modern woke bllsht on the movie, but at the end this movie feels just like an amalgamation of references and not like a movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was suprised by Chris Pratt as Mario, but he did it good enough. Don`t like the concept of Luigi being captured by Bowser, But they added a lot of funny secrets! At the end i expected an Good fight but instead they ran through everything, very dissapointing!
