Starting from the villain, the way he is temperamentally made is pitiful and the costume is hideous, he looks like a man in a garbage bag. The characterization of Batman then is practically non-existent and reduced to a figure that is almost always silent and lacks any kind of charisma. But the film is still watchable as it contains some good action scenes and good moments, plus an honorable mention must be made to the character of Selina who is the only one characterized by a minimum. This has to be one of the most over-rated Batman movies about. It tries very hard to be "The Dark Knight" but comes up woefully short. Very minor spoilers ahead. Nothing about the story itself.

1) Batman comes across as just a regular shmo running around in a cape. No cool James Bond style, he seems almost .. fragile. And this isnt a rap on the choice of actor - he actually is pretty good (no Christian Bale, but hes arguably as good as Ben Affleck), but the dialog in parts comes across a bit whiny and Batman doesn't come across being as intimidating as the other movies because of it.
2) The story is way to long and gets a bit dull at times. I mean sure it builds up a story but it takes way long to do so. Halfway in I found my attention wandering, which doesn't happen at other long movies like Avengers:Endgame e.g.
3) The villain and plot development isnt bad, but it feels more like a serial killer movie than a Batman movie. Some of the backstory about his family has an interesting twist, and the noir feel reminds me a bit of John Wick but it doesn't come together as well as that one (Batman is neither cool enough nor intimidating enough)

So all in all ... underwhelming.

Performances are lifeless. It also marked a distinct return to the 80s style lack of attention to realism, leaving no "outs" to explaining so many things that I lost count. Total reversal of realism from the last trilogy. Also, what was up with the disrespectful pacing? Editor thought he was making a soap opera or Netflix series. I watched "Drive My Car" with the same runtime, completely enthralled with almost nothing happening because editing was crisp and well-framed. The > 1 -hour of dead footage in The Batman was pointless. Expand

'off' inThings I liked: The Cast: Andy Serkis is awesome in everything he does, Patterson did a great job, Jeffery Wright is the next generation's Morgan Freeman. I really like Zoe Kravitz in most things she does but she seemed kind of ... 'off' in this one. In fact the whole Batman-Catwoman romance didn't work for me. He acts all stoic, she throws some half-azzed flirtations his way and I guess that's supposed to be a romance of sorts? Colin Farrel deserves an Oscar for his performance has the Penguin. If people weren't told who was playing Cobblepot ahead of time they never would have guessed it. Paul Dano was a little...eh... much. I could have done with a little toning down of the Riddler without the PG-13 Seven wannabe.
The action was top notch and some of the best of any batman movie.
So why the score? Three major issues bring big negatives in my book: the cinematography is some of the worst I've ever seen in any movie. As dark and unrecognizable as Solo or some eps of the last season of GoT. I had to turn my brightness to max on my TV just to see what was happening in this movie. If Solo gets a knock for it, so should this movie.
The second big negative is the musical score. The entire soundtrack is a riff of the same 4 notes used over... and over.. and over again and it gets old very quick in a 3 hour movie and that brings me the third big negative:
The length. There is no way this movie needed to be 3 hours. After hearing about "Saving Gotham" with a brooding Batman for 2 hours.. I was done and tuning out for the last hour.
My next big point: this is the third Batman in 10 years. They've introduced the fourth Joker in 15 years. Why is WB so afraid of making a BM movie without even a mention of the Joker? Can we get some new villains up in here? Black Mask, Hush, Clayface, anyone that hasn't been on the big screen before? Maybe someone a little more comic-booky like Man-bat,instead of these gangsters and psychopaths, Can we quit trying to push Batman as the darkest superhero, who doesn't kill mind you, while treading the PG-13 line? I just need something new and refreshing and different in a Batman movie and this was just a harder attempt at a Batman-Nolan movie.

To start, the dialogue sounds like it was written by an edgy 12-year-old boy. I suppose that's fitting since that seems to be the target audience. It wants to be dark and edgy, without ever actually committing to anything dark or disturbing. It tries too hard while simultaneously falling flat. A lot of character decisions don't make much sense if you think about them too hard. The romance doesn't make any sense- it feels just shoved in there. There were some scenes that they clearly wanted to include, even if they didn't fit very well. Batman walking through water with people following- it's a cool shot, I admit, but it feels awkward and inconsistent with the rest of the scene/movie. Lastly, the movie is way too long at 3-hours. I don't regret watching it, but I wouldn't watch it again. The best part of this movie was that they included some amount of detective work on the part of batman- this is interesting and hasn't been included in other recent renditions of batman.

If you want to turn off your brain then this is probably a fine movie. If you have any bit of skepticism about what you're being presented, the movie will disappoint.

Unimpressive.

Patman is the worst performance of Batman in live action film since Clooney. That is the crux of the problems with the film, Terrible casting. With the exception of Andy Serkis and Paul Dano this was the most poorly cast batman film from top to bottom.

Other problems exist such as there being no chemistry with the cast. Pattinson and Kravitz are like watching paint dry.

The music is also a highlight in terrible. Between repeatedly beating "Something In The Way" and Ava Marie in their various rearrangements, the music is uninspired and downright bland.

There is also the writing which is more or less OK, but the pacing of it is too long, drawn out and aimlessly meandering.

Arguably the worst part of all of this is the public told you this from the beginning. Anyone who understands film making told you that this was going to be bad. Its not as bad as it could have been but it definitely is not up to the legacy of the franchise and remember this is the same franchise with batnips and Ahnold.

It took me 6 hours to get through a laborious 3 hour film from stopping it and getting bored repeatedly. A hallmark of a mediocre film

5/10. Its bad but you have undoubtedly seen worse. At least it isnt some Disney garbage.

A massive letdown...

I'm as big of a Batman fan as they come and I was beyond excited for this movie after several stunning trailers, I even liked the casting of Pattinson of Batman and wanted to see him prove all the doubters wrong...

First I'll say what I did like about the film:
-The score
-The cinematography
-Colin Ferell's unrecognizable performance
-The Batsuit and Batmobile
-Catwoman's portrayl

Now what I didn't like about this one:
-The snail like pacing
-Emo Bruce Wayne who doesn't separate his Batman persona from his regular life
-The lack of screen time and chemistry for Alfred
-The jumbled and disjointed plot that doesn't seem to know exactly where it's going
-Riddler's ultimate ploy at the end of the movie not aligning with his motivation from the rest of the film
-The lack of memorable action scenes - Some rather cringey/weak dialogue which I blame on the writers and not the stellar cast

While not an entirely a bad film, it simply left me with a feeling of "meh' which is not what I expect from a big budget lice action Batman reboot. A reboot has to feel necessary and this movie does nothing better than the Nolan film's already pulled off. I literally went home and rewatched Batman Begins after I left the theater just to remind myself of what a Batman movie should feel like.

Crow and Seven were far superior and the very obvious inspiration for this version of Batman. The love is for the dark atmosphere and sullen Bruce Wayne, which was okay but needed an R rating to be effective. Riddler was no where near as intelligent as the writers wanted him to be. His garbage bag uniform was poorly constructed and his character was totally undone in the third act. The penguin was an awful villain and only played a small role in what was an excellent car chase scene. Zoe was one of the best Cat Woman I've seen, she did a great job. Music was good, I enjoyed Batman's theme. Batman mingling with cops and the public upset me, it was such a detour of who his character is. As always these days, atmosphere and cool shots seem more important to directors than actual story. I have no interest in seeing a sequel. For sure this movie benefited from a long Covid lock down, people's excitement to get back to the movies overflowed into their general senses. Okay movie - not the Batman I'm looking for. Expand

By PG-13 I don't simply mean its visuals/goriness, but most importantly its dialogues, themes, and storytelling it tries to raise.

First, the dialogues. We get a glimpse of noir, but it soon falls flat due to a very uninteresting, plain, forgettable choice of words Batman used in his narration. Mind you, this is not a jab at Pattinson. But there is no emotion in his line of words. Batman in this film mutters words that are always very safe, very carefully chosen, which strikes as an odd contrast to Pattinson's tortured portrayal of Batman as someone with a seemingly pent up anger. His choice of words is very PG-13 so that the kids can understand what Batman is trying to convey.

Second, the storytelling. Despite being a film about vengeance-fueled Batman, we don't get to see him actually being in full "vengeance" mode. Batman's actions look very much apprehensive and controlled. Nothing too outrageous. Again, at odds with Pattinson's portrayal that seem to be full of anger; he's supposed to be really angry but somehow he still does not let his anger take the best of him.

Last, the depiction/visuals. I'm not speaking about cinematography (which is great), but how the scenes are depicted. The film sets this up as a film about hunting down a serial killer. But the film barely shows how cruel The Riddler can be to his victims. I'm not saying this film is terrible. The acting, given the limited script they had, is excellent. Pattinson did his best, so did Paul Dano (always likes him as a villain), Zoe Kravitz, and the rest. Cinematography is fantastic; the lighting, angle, everything here is very great that makes a couple of very good trailers - perhaps one could even say that the whole film trades off coherency for making the scenes "trailer-able". The music is iconic, although with an almost decent music directing. And I guess this detective Batman is a fresh breath of air.

But all that does not make the movie good as in the end it's still all over the places and very PG-13. Especially not with the 3 hours runtime where many scenes feel like a The Walking Dead filler episode.

If you're expecting a Batman film with similar gritty, tone to The Dark Knight trilogy or Joker, this film is not for you. But if you only want a live-action cartoon, I guess you can be satisfied with this one.

The new Batman is clumsy, bizarre, uneven, thinks its a totally different genre, and has some of the lamest action sequences that I didn't even know were possible to have in a movie about freaking Batman. Robert Pattinson plays, "some guy larping as Batman," and legit doesn't look or carry the weight or the part of the comic book character and is so gratingly thick throughout the movie you might think he's one of those paper-thin C list superheroes instead. Casting is a joke, with a strange sequence at the beginning involving a gang of "thugs" or mini-future-joker enthusiasts perhaps?

They restrain a clearly asian man, to ironically ask the only black kid in the group to "knock him out" as some sort of rite of passage. I mean they could just take his darn wallet, but they've really got to prove a point I suppose. Are people in hollywood even remotely aware of the violence from the last 3 years directed towards Asian people by actual black perpetrators? How alarmingly out-of-touch.
So the kid chickens out, Batman shows up, with the leader of the gang somehow unaware of who Batman even is even though the opening crawl dialogue tells us he's been "watching the streets" for a couple of years. This whole gang doesn't know who Batman is or has never heard of him? Even after the montage of various other minor crime examples all cower as soon as they look at their own shadow under the vague light of the Bat signal? They all seem to know Batman. What ensues is one of the worst fight scenes I've ever seen in a film, and yes- I've seen Turkish Star Wars among many other films.

Pattinson almost drunkenly stands in the middle of these seven or eight dudes and gets wailed on several times, but then somehow bumps a few of them in such an uncomfortable fashion that they turn tail and flee. One dude literally pulls out a gun and takes aim, but the other thug who didn't want to commit violence tries to stop him. The bullets magically ricochet off Batman! Must be a new super power he picked up from a better Batman movie.

They then all scatter, and we get an extremely drawn out scene where Batman walks through a throng of police people at a murder scene with some black guy who isn't Lucius Fox I guess again larping as James Gordon. This is about as far as I could possibly get in the movie without falling asleep or killing myself, so honestly I don't care what happens beyond that point. The opening Riddler reveal scene is so goofy, that I almost peed my pants. Its legitmately one of the worst villain reveal scenes I've ever seen in a movie and its played one hundred percent straight.

Not recommended to anyone with half a brain or fans of the DC comics or even the Nolan films. Its so low effort and Pattinson and Kravitz are just not suited for these roles whatsoever.

Every trailer and photo I would see from set would make me more and more excited and finally the day came and as I sat through the nearly three hour film, I was left...disappointed. Not because the movie was bad by any means, but because it didn't feel complete. There was no big resolution, there was no tense final standoff and battle of wits. It just...happened. And before I knew it, the film had ended. There was so much potential to be touched upon and I really thought we were finally going to have a Batman movie that could explore parts of Batman that had never been explored before on the big screen. Instead, we were left with an incredibly safe Batman movie that lays down tons of groundwork and definitely sets something up with it's diversity in characters, but other than that really just did not feel like it had a purpose to exist other than to sell merch and keep people interested in the future of DC by saying that SOMETHING may come eventually. I have to hand it to them, because the casting was wonderfully done and I fully appreciated the performances that Colin Farrell and Paul Dano put in as Penguin and Riddler respectfully, and Robert Pattinson shows promise as Batman. There was a lot of things to like here and a lot of things to hate, both culminating in a film with notable spectacles and great action scenes that were too few and far between for me to praise them enough. I really wanted to like this, but there were multiple moments that made me genuinely tired and bored, and even some that irked me, mostly the handling of Catwoman's ambiguous sexuality and her whole character motivation just being downright meaningless. The Batman could have been so much more than just another safe DC film, and it honestly felt like it was marketed as such. I'm hoping that this is just growing pains for the new DC movie lineup and that by the next entry things will be settled in, but for now I worry for what comes next. Expand

That movie turned out great and was highly profitable and the same can be said about this one.

The ultimate cope for Batman geeks, the most fragile and insecure fanbase on the planet. It's too derivative of David Fincher's work and it doesn't do anything the previous Batman movies haven't already done, well the Schumacher ones are excluded since his only contribution was a lot of neon.
The fans of The Batman are quite something else, they give the Nolan/Snyder cult a run for their money, when you point out that the movie is visually ugly and severely underlit, the only retort they have is "go watch Adam West and the Schumacher movies.".

To the people giving the Batman anything more than a 5/10, try watching something other than Star Wars and capesh*t.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great cinematography. Weak underdeveloped plot full of plot holes despite the long running time. Bad, open mouth acting from Batman and Riddler. Too many forced romance scenes between Batman and Catwoman. Inconsistent Batman who is sometimes bulletproof and sometimes not. Says he is the shadows but walks right into conflicts--common thugs happy to challenge him. Paper thin characters: Alfred, Gordon, the Riddler's victims, the reporter killed by Falcone. Endless fakeouts. Batman is shot/blown up! Oh no he's fine. Alfred is dead! Oh no he's not. Batman is going to run over Penguin! Oh no he's not. Catwoman shot Falcone! No she didn't. Riddler knows Batman's secret identity! No he does not. The major was shot! She's just fine. And many more too depressing to recount. Expand

The Batman is utter crap.

Incredibly mediocre in concept, plot, action, and performance. Blandly noir in style. At LEAST an hour longer than its plot merits on account of a red herring (a predictable red herring) that takes up the entire second act.

The soundtrack consists of mostly the two chords from Nirvana’s “Something in the Way”, and Bruce Wayne, in the few moments that the movie allows the character to exist at all, is tediously ‘emo’.

It’s crap.

First I am going to say Patrick and Selina are fantastic actors. Patrick has to be one of the best Batmans and Selina was good, not great... just good. The director Matt Reeves, sucks. I'm sorry... He butchered the movie, "Let Me In." Which was a copy cat of a(n) original. And since the company wanted seriousness, well who better than Matt Reeves. The Batman character introduction is so stiff, he walks like he has pole up his bun. Also the rain... OMG it rains in almost every scene. I'm surprised a freaking flash flood warning didn't appear on Batman's cellphone. Penguin seems to have a difficult time with his acting... The Riddler is so Cringe... Also they are always whispering... There's no one on the freaking rooftop... Why are they whispering with pounding rain? The beginning of the movie started great all to go to hell once the fighting started... "MORE RAIN PLEASE!!!" If you're wondering there also fire in the rain, yep... gun fights in the rain... yep explosions in the rain. Batman walking in the rain... yep. If you love rain this is your movie. Cliche after cliche... It's such a bad movie. Drug factory, been there done that. Bodies in the back of a car... yep. Keep in mind we are living in a cancel culture and we are also living in a world where it's easy for people to put up a few sentences and say something is good. Watch the movie on a date night, just make sure to bring an umbrella... Freaking rain in every scene. Expand

There are good moments, however, they are far and few between in this near 3-hour slog. The Riddler is easily the worst part, he is nowhere near true to his comic self, whatsoever. He weirdly moans and sexualizes his crimes, which, while accurate to certain serial killers, makes me feel like this movie was composed by cringey edgelords seeking a 12-17-year-old audience who can't sus out the fact that this movie has no substance. Anyone calling it a detective movie is doing a disservice to you. Batman never solves anything minus a simple riddle. The Riddler is always a step ahead despite him being so sloppy the audience can even recognize him. The Batman himself is so off base and away from the source material. The tactician has become an amateur at his own art, choosing to actively run at people with guns.

The movie's just a mess, it's worth a single watch, but the ending act will leave you wanting, the movie itself may leave you wanting to just stop.

It all goes downhill after the car chase scene. The cat woman gets her backstory filled which takes away from bruce wayne public character being developed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Actually it should be a good movie. But I just don't feel this.
Starting with the fact that it is too long and has many lengths and that the dialogues are to fall asleep, it is not convincing over the entire length.
The cast is good except that Catwoman is a miscast.
The action is well staged but dulls because you always see the same thing.
Considering all the qualities of the Batman movies as a whole, this one is no more entertaining than the Joel Schumacher parts. Are ok, but far from the great films of a Nolan or Burton.

Kravitz is great, Farrell is phenomenal and it was a travesty he didn't get more screen time. Dano's take on the Riddler was a bit much, its like there is middle ground between Carrey and Dano, and well, they missed it by turning him into a masked loon, think Michael Meyers with a larger vocabulary.
Serkis' Alfred is almost non-existent and the side story about Catwoman is an utter waste of time.
The score is a high point.
The reality is this story could have been told in 90 minutes to 2 hours max. Its over-inflated run time is arrogant and self indulgent.
Don't get me wrong, I had very low expectations for The Batman and it was far, far better than I thought it would be, but this sums it up:
It ain't no "Dark Knight Trilogy"

That is not year one or the beginning of his story! What is the point of Catwoman? Without her, it would make a story the same. She's awkward eye candy, with the message: White rich people are bad. The movie looks good and some scenes are pretty good, but they won't save the full movie. Actors did good jobs. At last, Batman should be IMO the sneaking creeping fear, a symbol of hope is Superman! I seen the trailer and made my call, but she wanted to see it and hooked the kids, I paid over 90 dollars to sit there with one kid a sleep, my wife leaving with the young one a hundred times, and I wouldn't put it past her that she took the little one into another movie for kids, because it wasn't what she hoped for. It was hyped because of the cast and nothing more, and it is seen here in the 10's. Praising it for its plot and great acting, and out of it all it was Kravitz that made what a slog it was and the jumbled mess of scenes running together so fast but not showing the timeframe it took place in. My old lady for what little she did watch called it a bad seven reboot, I can't say she is far off. The few high points were the trailer scenes at the beginning, about middle and the close end. It could've been an hr if that of run time and still told the story, but everything was drawn out and over acted or not acted at all in alot of the film, out of having the most bad guys in a super hero movie wasn't any of them a threat of had you going I hope its going to be ok, because you knew even when someone was going to die ahead of time. The music was pretty decent for the dark gritty take, the way it was shot was almost Tim Burton in a way with a modern city. It kept spinning wheels but no one character got much screen time for the thing being 3 hrs and that was the saddest of it all really, coming from Reeves who isn't the best director, but isn't bad either, and thats where this 200 plus million movie falls into, its not bad but its not good either, and I do feel ripped off and cheated because of the hype and higher price tag the tickets were. And to add at all the fan boys of pattison, even though Nolan isn't the director the Reeves is all his Batman movies made every scene count and that's why I'm saying this doesn't hold a candle to his version because he hit it on all accounts, even though he let Hardy make a mocking of Bane in some ways. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know, the Batman had the best shot to be a memorable movie, I expected to guard it in my heart forever, it almost did the job, but because of its prejudice it didn’t quite make the cut.
It’s really sad of how much is made by horrible people who obviously hate children, just look at it. In the superhero movie market there’s an obvious prejudice of children, JUST LOOK AT IT, what MCU and DCEU movie had an child superhero between 2008-2020 (or even before)? All the child actors became lost and quickly replaced (like the daughter of the character ant-man). 2021 was a big progress with the television series wandavision, there were two child superheroes in this show! But it was a difficult time for the child actors, that got replaced each day by one kid older than them, and by Disney’s choice the two characters were killed, what a shame.
Now this movie shows that we are in a deplorable condition, the first draft of the movie “the Batman and the Robin” was great, it really would have showed the world that kids also deserve respect. But by demand of the company Warner Brothers Robin was completely taken down of the film (and the actor that worked day by day hard on the movie discarded like it was a parasite.). We are lucky that the script got leaked, or otherwise we would see the prejudice, but not understand that it wasn’t the director’s fault, but a company move.
The movie is still great, but it feels empty, when Batman is driving the bat-mobile you can feel the lack of the boy wonder driving a bike at his side, when (spoilers) the bomb hits Alfred you can feel that Robin should have been there at his side, (when Batman is on the hospital is obvious that they reused the scene were he demanded Robin to shut up and go back to sleep while he talked with Alfred, but sadly it got edited). The Bruce Wayne of this film was and is criticized and with all right, because he only made sense if he was passing on the crisis that is being a father that wants to be relatable to his kid. Not only that but all children on this movie are depicted as sad and annoying little brats that only suffer, a truly sad state to Hollywood.
Now every time that you see the movie, remember, Robin should be there. All the emotion, character development and dynamics left out.
The saddest thing was the Batman and Catwomen kiss scene, were in realty it was supposed to be focused on Robin, jealous of that woman stealing his man, with an entire flashback of the beautiful night Dick and Bruce got to know each other, they had finnaly found love in their life, together, it would have been a masterpiece.
Now all we can do is show that we want children in our movies, and that we are ashamed of this prejudice happening for years and years at this point. #realesetheRobincut

Acts too moody as Bruce and comes off like a Walmart version of The Crow at times. Way too long. Totally contrived 'plot twists' ruin this movie. The fight scenes were cool. The Batmobile was super slick. There qere some good scenes, just clearly not 3 hours of them. At times, my friend and I wanted to fall asleep. The villian just plain sucked. Its just a bunch of generic crime/action scenes stitched together with constant cliches and platitudes. Expand

I love the character of Batman but this movie was all over the place, dragged across 3 hours of boredom.
First, its Batman himself. I understand that he is supposed to be powerful and all in certain ways but, through the whole movie, it felt like he was someone using a cheat command console on a game and types in "god".
Numerous times, he gets absolutely destroyed and not even a scratch or damage to the armor or a scar on part of the face that is not covered...nothing
First he is running away from cops, uses his wingsuit to escape and falls down after hitting a bridge or something AND slams onto the ground. A small grunt was the only thing that happened.
After that, he gets blasted by a bomb that blew up right in front of his face that made him fly across the church hall...Next scene, he`s completely fine, not a problem...
Finally, as the movie was slowly coming to a closure, he eats a bunch of automatic riffle bullets, while casually walking towards the two thugs shooting him and, of course, without twitching, takes them down... I mean, what the fck...
His fighting is clumsy and for someone who is in the role of Batman for two years should have made him more experienced.
There were NEVER any consequences to his actions. Riddler all of the sudden figuring out that Bruce is Batman was not even it...
Speaking of Bruce...In this movie, he is depicted as someone who does not care about his life, not even trying to be Bruce Wayne, as depicted in the comics and other movies...
In Batman Begins, Alfred tells Bruce that he has to do things he is not comfortable with like, spending money on cars and buying hotels, being a rich douche...Which he does, knowing that THAT separates him from his alter ego, while also protecting the people close to him.
In this movie, there is none, NONE !
Him realizing at the end, I must be more that vengeance does not overwrite all the bad **** throughout the movie.
The chemistry between him and Catwoman was pretty much forced and felt rushed.
They barely have any real interactions and all of the sudden she kisses him...If Reeves left that to happen later in his vision of Batman`s life, it would have been done way smoother and more understandable.
Also, when it comes to Selina, I have to mention *that* line... She says "White privileged a**holes"... That was not needed. Riddler felt like the only part of the movie that I liked, UNTIL Reeves ruined him.
From the very beginning, his plan was to unravel the corrupt city officials and violently expose them. Which was from a villain stand point a good start. He felt creepy, brutal and he was showing what he was doing to everyone and people of Gotham actually started cheering for him (Major funeral scene, as Bruce was arriving)
And by the end of the movie, once he`s caught, Batman reveals his ultimate plan...which was to... kill innocents by flooding the entre city ? What ?
Reeves built a character that already had a premise and was well written, only to retcon his decisions at the end and make him a serial murderer of innocent people....
I also liked Colin`s Penguin adaptation, his acting and looks fully made a fresh, great take on a classic comic villain. He was always Batman`s punching bag and at least that has not changed...
The Batmobile was also awesome, as a car guy, I was blown away.
The soundtrack was ok, the bat and cat themes were good.
Overall, even those good things do not make up for such a bad movie for me.

I thought about not including the Joker in this review but I cannot not mention him.
Batman movies nowadays suffer from Joker fatigue. Batman has so so many comic book villains that could be used in Reeves' universe, and ground them instead of making all fantasy like.
Mad Hatter, Calendar Man, Victor Zsasz, Death Stroke (Even tho he doesn't fit in within the theme of the first movie) heck, even Killer Croc where he could be a dude who's a cannibal... ANYTHING of that but the Joker...
This version clearly tries too hard to be like Ledger, just by listening to him. He's voice is very similar to him, it's very see-through.

The prologue is alienating because of the pair of chosen tracks: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Nirvana's "Something in the Way". The photograph looks like that of "Blade Runner" but more livid and desaturated: here are not many sudden flashes, bright razorcuts of neon or lasers that cleave the darkness. The shade prevails for about 3 hours uninterrupted. At least in the incipit the pouring rain is missing, then instead it is added as well. The story is a succession of crime scenes in which a taciturn, weirdly dressed dude with a mask and cloak investigates alongside cops and detectives. If acting is optional, Pattinson could have been replaced by Robert Smith (which means the movie is not grunge or emo, but gothic). The third act loots the Fincher of '95, '99, 2007 and the McTeigue of 2005. Matt Reeves: horrible example of the new authoriality.

The tone is awful. You can hardly hear what is being said. The film is dark. There's way too much pausing of dialog. Consequently, the movie gets unwatchable quickly. This is a "Don't waste your time" kind of movie.

Not to mention the woke politics behind the plot. Literally EVERY corrupt politician is a white male, while the new mayor that’s trustworthy is a black woman. Catwoman complaining abt white privilege is a joke too. The only reason I’m giving this a 3 is because of the great performance as BATMAN by Pattinson, not Bruce Wayne. Penguin and riddler were decent too. Overall, slow boring snoozefest, with only a couple of cool scenes, and an ending that is anticlimactic. Very disappointed. Expand

The Batman is a movie that claims to revolutionize big-screen adaptations of the classic character, but fails in almost every way.

The cinematography and music/score are amazing, but every other aspect of this movie left me wanting.

Batman is a moody like a teenager, and clearly is supposed to learn a lesson about what he represents to the city of Gotham. But that lesson is completely unearned by the end of the film, and in fact his character is almost superfluous to the heroic climax.

Zoe Kravitz tries to deliver an intriguing Catwoman, but the writing leaves her as a damsel in distress multiple times, and the super-flawed Batman is constantly taking the moral high ground with her and talking down to her.

Colin Ferrell's Penguin was a high point for his performance and humor, but underused as just a secondary villain.

The plot is plodding and overly-long. Upon my second watch of the movie, I found myself drifting off to sleep often in the first half. Knowing what happens next, I lost all interest in the mystery because it is delivered in an unexciting manner. The Riddler is the main antagonist for awhile, but then disappears from the movie and is replaced with a string of other threats before becoming just another item to be checked off the list by the end.

The action is well choreographed, but just like other DCEU films, there is a swath of collateral damage that is far too apparent to be ignored as it is. Batman is just as destructive at the end of the film as he is at the beginning, leaving one to wonder what the lesson is to be learned here.

On a related note, the movie does touch upon current issues such as corruption and greed in politics and government, but then has a very regressive take on the mentally ill and the drug epidemic. The themes presented here are muddled and presented in a slap-dash manner that makes little sense.

Overall, I found the movie boring, regressive, and without meaningful themes.

The big problem with gritty, dark, "realistic" batman movies is that Bruce Wayne the billionaire could do far more good for Gotham with his money than vigilante Wayne with his gadgets and fists. The decision to go for a "realistic" batman is particularly ironic considering the limited action scenes; in particular the one where batman slams into a bridge after jumping off a building. the overlong movie should've ended there. That said my main issue with this is the fact that the Riddler is basically a puzzle gimp. The mask is pretty tragic and the character is over the top yet boring at the same time. Part of Riddler’s most iconic look is undoubtedly the green suit. It’s refined and comes as an expectation of the character. The Riddler comes across with a lot less eccentricity when compared to other Riddlers for example the Arkham Games or Ed Nygma in Gotham. Both had that eccentric flair that drove the portrayal.

Another thing that bothers me is Bruce and Batman, seemingly lacking dialogue and more of a side character in his own story. With little suspense and predictable outcomes the movie isn’t really worth 3 hours of anyone’s time.

My final point is the car… a billionaire opts to drive what looks like a modified 70s sports car with an afterburner strapped to the back… of all things. With a positive note being the chase scene is fairly entertaining for all of a few minutes. With one or two twists, don’t really give it your time.
