The bleak tone from his Planet of the Apes films are ever so present in this movie and that is never a bad thing. The Batman is very character heavy and there are surprisingly only a few massive set pieces which has grand action sequences although when they come, oh yes, they deliver. Robert Pattinson is wonderful as Batman although he doesn't show much emotion when he is Bruce Wayne either so it is a little hard to get into his character. However after the first half hour, I got used to it. The cinematography by Greig Fraser is gorgeous. The film mostly takes place at night and that neo noir feel is perfect for this Batman adaptation. The film's middle third sags a tad too much with Cat Woman's backstory but when it is detective Batman solving crimes with Jim Gordon, played wonderfully by Jeffrey Wright, it is riveting stuff. Andy Serkis plays a very solid Alfred, who is kind, caring, yet strong but he is barely in the film. Paul Dano is very terrifying as the Riddler, who doesn't show his face until later on in the film but when he does, he does a suitably crazy Riddler who is a solid Batman nemesis. Michael Giacchino's score is wonderfully memorable and plays a big part in the thrilling action sequences as well as the small characters moments. Although it might not be as accessible as Nolan's best Dark Knight movies, this is also a really exciting piece of work. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the movie is one of the best movies of this year. Even if some consider the film's story to be slow, Batman fits such a serious and heavy pace. The only downside is that the last 1 hour of the movie is very up in the air. In a lot of ways, this is more like a murder mystery, but the serial killer is an early incarnation of The Riddler (a creepy Paul Dano). Sure, Batman gets to whip out some cool gadgets and kick ass, but this iteration is more about his early inner conflicts and finding his footing in the superhero world. Pattinson is suitably sulky and gloomy (much like his fame-making role in the Twilight series). His romantic connection with Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) has some intense sparks, but it's really about all the dark criminal elements of the city and when I say dark, almost none of the film is shot in daylight. Director Matt Reeves has created some visually arresting moments, but most of the fights are a blur without much clear action. Surprisingly, at almost 3 hours it never lags, partially because Reeves has managed to keep the interactions compelling. This is a worthy and interesting new take on the legend. NOTE: There's a short, dumb bit at the end, so no need to stay, but take a blacklight and check out the hidden message at the top of the poster. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Batman is style over substance. The aesthetic, atmosphere, tone, and score are all great. Fight scenes work really well even though there are too few. Where the movie falters is in it's script, story, and character work. The narrative never really comes together, themes are inconsistent, character backstory and arcs are hamfisted, the romance lacks development, and for a focus on "realism" the movie has several unrealistic moments that will make you scratch your head. It's a good start to what I hope will be a new Batman franchise, but this one will underwhelm with it's dragged out pace and flat mysteries. Expand

In this one, Bruce Wayne/Batman finds himself up against various terrorist threats from the menace known as The Riddler. With some help from Selena Kyle/Catwoman, he must dig deep into Gotham's seedy underworld of crime and corruption while also targeting some of it toughest mobsters, such as the Penguin to find the answers he needs. When I first heard the news a few years ago that Robert Pattinson was in talks to don the cape, I was immediately skeptical, not because of his past with 'Twilight' believe it or not, cause he's actually a hell of an actor if you watch some of his past and most recent indie films that he's done ('Good Time', 'The Lighthouse', etc), but because I simply didn't think he fit the part and I couldn't picture him in such an iconic role to save my life. However, when the first trailers of him in action dropped, I was intrigued, my doubts swayed, and my mind opened. The more previews I saw, the more excited and hopeful I became. And after watching this very epic and VERY long (3-hr) iteration of the caped crusader, I certainly have a lot to unpack here, so I'll start with the basics like usual. For starters, anyone going into this with doubts about Pattinson needs to put those doubts to rest and try your absolute hardest to disassociate him from 'Twilight', cause like it or not, the man can act, and he gives an absolutely stellar performance here both as Bruce Wayne and Batman! He really opened himself up here in every possible way and exposes himself to every possible emotion, easily making him the most sympathetic, grounded, and vulnerable Batman we've seen thus far! And while I wouldn't go so far as to say he's my new favorite Batman, he's right up there with Christian Bale and more than earned his chance to take on what many consider to be the most coveted role in Hollywood. As for the supporting cast, Zoe Kravitz is stunning and impressive as Catwoman here, and Paul Dano as the Riddler is absolutely haunting and chilling! The only weak link and character here I found to be rather miscast, despite lots of makeup and prosthetics being applied, was Colin Farrell as the Penguin. While everybody else in the film felt like they were on the same dark and gritty wavelength as each other, only Farrell feels cartoony and hammy compared to the rest of the cast, and the guy's just too tall and handsome in real life to make for a convincing Penguin. I know I can't be the only one who wouldn't picture someone like him in the role first thing. Storywise, it's not the strongest, and I couldn't help but notice that it borrowed heavily from a lot of the gimmicks and tropes that we've seen in several past iterations of Batman films, including several from 'The Dark Knight' trilogy, so it couldn't help but feel a little cliche and derivative at times. And as for that epic runtime, I was already skeptical enough upon learning about how long it would be, and told myself that a runtime that long would NEED to be justified, but unfortunately it just wasn't. There are several moments and scenes that felt very much like padding to me, and this film easily could've trimmed several moments to make it a half hour or so shorter and it would've been great. However, I will say that the overall tone, mood, and atmosphere provided that gritty noir-style Gotham most of us have come to love and expect over recent years, and it was definitely enough to keep me invested and not too restless during its 3 hours. I also really enjoyed the score in this one as well! It's worth noting just how well it fit with the rest of the film and helping with setting the tone, not to mention its surprisingly effective use of 'Something in the Way' by Nirvana on a couple of different occasions. By the time the credits rolled, it's obvious just how much the studio wants to set things up for further installments in this particular Batman universe, and with an intriguing enough set up with this first film, I'd be willing to see where things go from here. Overall, there's not really any surprises here in the way of that gritty noir feeling and style from watching Batman, but despite a somewhat redundant-feeling storyline with a good amount of excess it could've trimmed, the tense atmosphere and score, as well as Pattinson's bold performance, along with several others in the cast are the main highlights here that make the film compelling and worthwhile enough, and perhaps might add just enough intrigue to see where things go from here. I do expect myself to compare the current Batman movie with previous one...and this is where it loses.
All those who have rated the movie as 10 are probably blind follower of Batman.
5) Riddler and Batman ( Robert Pattinson), both were great at their place but rest of the cast doesn't really match much their standard.

I really enjoyed this. It feels like a great return to the core cheesy whodunnit detective story that birthed the original character. Rawcus moments of bombastically actiony stuff aside, I never thought I'd love to watch a superhero movie where a lead character states 'white previlage' in a given sentence. Can we not even escape life's drama bs without being confronted with it within a make believe comic book world now? That aside I had a lot of fun here.

Robert Pattinson in the bat suit looks somewhat comical at times although the reactions from characters make it work. It is a realistic and believable direction for Batman and really harkens back to his origins when we still called DC, Detective Comics. You really believe these villains could exist and can even empathize with them. With some better writing and story direction resulting in a more meaningful middle and more significant finale this may have just been the best Batman has ever been on film. Expand

Whilst not as cinematic or inventive as the Keaton/Burton or Bale/Nolan interpretations, this version of The Batman does lean into "world's greatest detective" areas of the characters lore that are often ignored. This at once feels fresh and trite as the script often leans on established detective noir tropes, which, especially in the voice over sections can feel cringeworthy due to some poor delivery from Pattinson.
Beyond these very short, seldom, poorly scripted moments however, the movie works very well. Whilst it may not have reached the very high heights of some Batman movies, it does feel authentic and compelling for the full 3 hour runtime and if nothing else it gives superhero movie fans something far more interesting to watch than the painfully dull, over sanitised Disney/Marvel, kids movies. Not perfect, by any means, but a great model to pursue for the future of the DC franchise.

The fact that Nirvana's "Something in the Way" -- a veritable anthem of depression -- is used prominently in at least a couple of scenes is evidence of the vibe director Matt Reeves was going for. That's not necessarily bad, but you'll have to accept that vibe as being fundamental to Bruce's nature to enjoy this movie. Thankfully, Pattinson spends most of his screen time as Batman rather than Bruce. When he is Bruce, he doesn't seem at all like the incredibly wealthy playboy/philanthropist he's supposed to be. Given the humanitarian mission of Wayne Enterprises, it's pretty bizarre that its CEO would *always* look like he's contemplating suicide. He's trying to fool the public, right?

That said, the emphasis on Batman as detective was welcome. He's supposed to be an incredibly smart guy, and Reeves really lets Batman show his smarts here. And, of course, he wouldn't be Batman without his amazing fighting chops. The fight scenes here are just remarkable. The fight choreo is the best of any Batman movie, IMO. Kudos to the stunt people in this film! I also appreciated that Reeves shows that, despite Batman's remarkable physical ability, he's still human and has his limits, which are definitely tested here.

The story is mostly interesting, but it tries to tackle too much. The movie chooses to introduce us to Batman, Cat Woman, The Riddler, Penguin, and Falcone (and technically The Joker, though just as a brief sequel teaser). It touches on their backstories, but it didn't feel like any of their backstories got the time they deserve. And this shifting about across characters had me drifting off a bit somewhere in the middle; things felt a little unfocused.

Speaking of which, the movie doesn't justify its nearly 3-hour runtime. Given the long runtime, I wish they *did* focus more on backstories, but there are some overlong and unnecessary scenes which didn't add to the narrative. Still, this is a solid entry into the Batman catalog, and with a few tweaks, I'm hopeful that the next installment (which will almost certainly feature The Joker) will be even better.

Throughout his film career, Director Matt Reeves (“Let Me In,” Planet of the Apes series) has explored a variety of issues: the sense of being “other,” the corrosive effects of alienation and whether the desire for vengeance is an integralThroughout his film career, Director Matt Reeves (“Let Me In,” Planet of the Apes series) has explored a variety of issues: the sense of being “other,” the corrosive effects of alienation and whether the desire for vengeance is an integral part of human nature. “The Batman” covers this territory, too.

Co-written by Reeves and Peter Craig (“The Town,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”), this film begins when Bruce Wayne/Batman (Robert Pattinson) has been a vigilante crime fighter for two years. After the Mayor of Gotham City is brutally murdered, Batman works with Lieutenant Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) to identify the killer and uncover his motivation. Along the way, Batman is required to confront the corruption of Gotham, where city officials are much more interested in self-dealing than improving the metropolis. Eventually, he discovers that the core of the civic corruption may be closer to home than he thought.

The cast is excellent. In addition to Wright and Paul Dano as The Riddler, John Turturro makes a charismatic appearance as crime boss Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard has a brief, explosive role as the corrupt District Attorney and Colin Farrell, unrecognizable beneath prosthetics and a fat suit, is a criminal-in-training as The Penguin. Zoe Kravitz is a sexy Selina Kyle/Catwoman with her own troubling past to explore. (She apparently prepped for this role by voicing the Catwoman role in 2017’s “The Lego Batman Movie.”) I hope that everybody who remains alive will reappear in later episodes of this intended trilogy.

With this first installment, Reeves has taken the Batman franchise in a very different direction from its predecessors. His goal appears to be exploring the depths of film noir (cynical heroes, stark/dark lighting, intricate plotting, and existential issues). This Batman is a brooding loner driven by vengeance, but self-aware enough to journal his thoughts, writing to give voice to his misgivings about life and his role in it, since there is nobody around to talk to. After “The Lighthouse,” this is a relatively upbeat role for Pattinson.

Two things about this Batman don’t work. First, the venal corruption of public officials is so consistent that the viewer eventually assumes that every character’s sole motivation is self-interest. That’s too cynical, even for me. Second, as The Riddler’s followers prepare for the film’s climactic scene, they debate online what type of weaponry to deploy. For me, observing an online chat where disgruntled terrorists debate “what gauge” rifles to deploy was art imitating life much too closely.

This Batman is sober, somber but still very worthwhile. It forcefully confirms the thesis that power always corrupts.

Clearly the Batman package and overall presentation helped this movie to be better than what it sould have been if it didn't make part of the Batman franchise.

Visually it is awesome, partially thanks to long, contemplative and uncluttered shots. Lighting is okay. First flaw to me: the environment is way too dark. I totally get that it constitute a part of the Batman's core but here it is just too much. There are se few scenes shot under the daylight. It so dark that some scenes are hard to understand, because you can't easily visualize the position of objects and characters.

Fight scenes are amazing, with some great choregraphies. I enjoyed the fact that Batman takes a lot of punches and bullets, making him seem more vulnerable, more human. Despite that fact, 'The Batman' manages to offer us spectacular scenes.

We obviously can complain about Pattinson embodying this Batman, but I enjoyed his role even more since he keeps his mask on for something like 85% on the time. In overall he is quite good at non-acting: he is almost impassive for the total length of the feature. However I think he made a slightly different Batman: more sad, more tired and more beginner. Speaking of this, thumbs up to the new Alfred too ! I was highly skeptical at first glance but his relation with Bruce Wayne is totally different than in the previous movies. I was also positively surprised by Catwoman's role and character, I found her not too sexualized, not too seductive, emotional as I like, and properly introduced in the scenario. The villains are okay, excepting the Riddler which I found to be terrific. Even more, I am deeply satisfied with the evolution of the different characters. I don't have the impression to have watched a pointless regular action movie.

I would have wanted more gadgets. For something as iconic as a Batarang, we see him use it once of twice maximum. What the heck ? He uses his grapple (or should I say Bat-grapple ?) way more often ! By extension, the wealth of Bruce Wayne is nothing more than detail ! While it is supposed to be his very first mean to be a lawkeeper... The Batcave looks like a regular cave as the Batmobile just looks like a boosted, armored and reinforced Jeep.

The scenario is quite boring and unoriginal. It sadly accentuate the fact that the movie lasts for more than two hours and a half. I found that the second third of it was the most boring. In overall it is really cyclic: Batman finds a riddle, solves it and goes to the meeting point, where he finds another riddle and so on and so on. He never tries to bypass the Riddler, never tries to do something unplanned. Fortunately the finale is worth it.

There are notable inconsistencies. Several allies, including Batman himself, are exposed to close bombing, and they all miraculously survive. Bruce Wayne take an incredible amount of bullets without taking much damage. It seems like he possess a bulletproof and fireproof mask... Quite effective.

I was disappointed by the fact that the movie tries to tackle multiple issues he can't really assume, as the death of Bruce's parents, the truth about his father and mother, the conception and origin of the Riddler, Gotham's politics, etc.

The soundtrack is great, especially the use of 'Something in the Way' from Nirvana (terrific song by the way). Its presence is so overwhelming and iconic that I can't remember any other song used in the movie !

In conclusion, many positive ideas and facts but I can't help to think that without its Batman label, this movie is just okay.

P.S. I hope the studios will return to the Russian market soon. the audience, who sincerely love movies, did not deserve a boycott. thanks

Without getting into too much territory, the Riddler was fantastic even though the riddles themselves didn't seem too special. We also don't spend too much time with Bruce, so the certain impact moment just fell flat cause I hadn't built a relationship with this newer Batman. Expand

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This contains VERY mild spoilers at the end that will be split and labeled appropriately.

Very high quality, as even though I wonder if the movie was a bit long and I don't think the casting was on point, I think everything else was top notch. The ending to this film does something that I wish more Batman adaptations did outside of animation: make him a hero that does more than punch the bad guy. Seeing an even more realistic Batman than even the Nolan version play against a very well balanced villain in terms of insanity and competence was a return to form.

This is the spoiler-y part, so if you don't want a minor spoiler you can stop reading.

Can we bring up the fact that the Penguin kills at least a dozen random drivers in the chase scene and Batman doesn't hold him accountable? I get that he's distracted but Gordon at least shouldn't just let him go afterward.

The movie is very committed to its film-noir detective story, taking a lot of inspiration from Seven. It does take a moment to get used to the brooding, dark atmosphere but it suits the film well. It really is, for most parts, a film-noir detective story.

Unfortunately for all the detective work, the actual story, themes and plot don't come together quite as well as needed to make this film truly great. The plot loses the audience towards the end with the finale not really being fully explained. The villain's motivations aren't really explored and that applies to most of the main characters. They really lack a personal arc.

That leave the film feeling a little unsatisfying, even if it is uniquely crafted.

The writing is mediocre, full of cliches, only the riddler stands out in this film. The director pushed too hard with the so called artistic shots, and the music was fine but so repetitive I started laughing near the end. On a brighter note - Paul Dano was exceptional and it was action-packed enough so it didn't feel like a 3-hour movie. It's a good film, but in my humble opinion it's not even close to Christopher Nolan's trilogy and the amazing achievement it had with the writing, cinematography and casting. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When it comes to Batman, it’s hard to escape the influence and comparisons to the Nolan trilogy which revolutionised how his story is told: focusing on character drama, having more realistic action sequences/plots, and favouring a darker tone. The Batman is certainly no different, and it strives to be one of the grimmest entries in the franchise. In following this approach, there are elements that work great, but there are also aspects that fall a little flat.

Visually, The Batman is fantastic. The dark environment and ominous shots keep the level of tension and dread to an almost suffocating level throughout most of the runtime. Sometimes the lighting gets a bit too dark to make out objects clearly, but on the whole the movie succeeds in drawing the viewer into the miserable hellhole that is Gotham. The score is also excellent, whether it is for adding menace during a crime scene investigation or for adding to the epic-ness of a thrilling action sequence.

Speaking of action sequences, they are somewhat sparse but when they happen they are well worth the wait. The violence is brutal and realistic and some of the stunt-work is mind-boggling. When characters get hurt in this movie, you will feel it.

All the actors pull their weight and give solid performances, and nobody really stands out as a weak-point. Robert P.’s first outing as our titular hero is a reserved, but powerful, portrayal of a determined and broken man who’s trying to redeem his city and himself.

The not-so-good parts:

The storyline doesn't really justify its behemoth runtime, and it drags in a few places. The movie tried to explore a few too many avenues about the dark side of Gotham and Batman’s personal history, and a few of them didn't get tied up that well. I also felt the closing climax act didn’t really add much to the movie and could be omitted entirely.

The villain plot wasn’t that interesting for me as it just seems like a rehashed version of David Fincher’s Seven or Zodiac but thrown into the Batman universe. I do like the approach of doing a Batman movie that is heavier on the detective side, but I just felt the stakes weren’t as high or as personal as some of the ones depicted in Nolan’s trilogy.

All of the characters are very cold and bitter, outside of our psychotic villain. While I understand this is probably what the film is going for to accentuate the dark and grim tone, it also made all of the characters somewhat similar and lifeless. Some of the character relationships are also lacking a bit of chemistry compared to what I experienced from the Nolan portrayal.

While the violence is generally realistic, some scenes involving Batman himself are a bit outrageous. The guy straight up turns into Superman for a few of the fight sequences, as he handles being blown up in the face, getting thrown off a high-speed vehicle, being shot multiple times - all with no long-lasting injuries, or even a scar.

Overall, The Batman is a solid new chapter in the franchise that continues the Nolan formula of depicting Batman and Gotham with a more grounded and grittier approach, but I can’t help but feel that it doesn’t bring many new things to the table while falling a bit short on achieving the same heights that its influences accomplished.

In my personal POV, the film lacks emotion for the story and the characters. I don't know for sure but it seems too shallow which is ironic because the film is so long. It's still worth watching if wandering about the Batman reboot - how it didn't synchronize with the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and how the acting of Robert Pattinson - the famous Twilight Movie Star and Zoë Kravitz - the daughter of famous celebrity. In addition, the movie ambiance is really well-made through dark theme, cold tone, and ofc the cinematography is magnificent. Tbh, I'm not a film expert, I'm just a moviegoer and cinephile. I didn't watch the trailer and didn't try to find any info about this film to prevent my personal expectations. Overall, I am neither disappointed nor dissatisfied.

And pulls in Bat-fans with story arcs from “Long Halloween” and “Batman: Year One” Then subtly goes down a long plot with nearly no “life” from any of its characters as we encounter an emo, juvenile Bruce Wayne whose second year Batman seems nearly indestructible. While the gritty feel and score are things to be desired, a forced plot, slow pacing and weak plot devices steal from this being a great movie more or less a Batman Film. Bruce Wayne (not Batman), Penguin, and especially the Riddler felt out-of-character and away from what makes them so distinct as characters. I get that this is a much darker take on the story, but at the end of the day they didn't go as far with that concept as they should have. We have none of the charm or the wit that makes Batman... BATMAN, and so at 3 hours this movie is a bit too intense to sit through without enough of that good old-fashioned humor. Zoe Kravitz nailed it as Catwoman, and Robert Pattinson is still a very capable Batman with a LOT of potential to improve. I'm excited to see the next movie, even if I am rather critical of this film here. Still incredible in terms of atmosphere, soundtrack, and very good acting. Worth seeing for every Batman fan. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you've watched The Dark Knight trilogy, you've already more or less watched this movie in a much better form. It borrows heavily from the themes and aesthetics of the Nolan films with an extra layer of depression and eyeshadow added for dramatic effect. While Batman assuming more of a detective role is indeed a welcome change, everything else feels like a downgrade from other movies. From dialogues so edgy you could cut yourself on them and a complete lack of saturation in the color palette to an absolutely repulsive version of Bruce Wayne that would be better off as the frontman of a grunge band than a charismatic millionaire moonlighting as a vigilante bat, the movie presents a rather unique, albeit out-of-character, version of the source material. The plot is decent, albeit dragged out, anticlimactic and littered with ham-fisted social justice sentiments. All in all, this movie feels like a great concept that is often tarnished by an eccentric director's vision and will to make it stand out from its predecessors in all the wrong ways. In an attempt to make it different, Matt Reeves forgot to ask himself if it is indeed going to be better. Nonetheless, it's an alright pulp-detective-superhero thingiemajig that you can enjoy as long as you can stay awake all the way to the end. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The new Batman film is a good step forward after the atrocious Affleck/DCEU version of the character that preceded it. The movie has many positive elements including a refreshing take of the Dark Knight, expertly portrayed by the underrated Pattinson, a more realistic and gritty setting and great cinematography. Unfortunately, the film is not without it's flaws. It borrows heavily from better films like Seven and Zodiac, but Reeves is no Fincher. The screenplay is also no match for the two aforementioned pictures. Particularly the ending contradicts the established motives of the Riddler and offers a very optimistic outcome when the films it studied offered a far more bleak finale. The movie at times feels like a sequel to a Year One movie, which doesn't work here. Concluding my "rant" about the screenplay i have to say that the romance between the Bat and the Cat was rushed. Another aspect of the film that bugged me was the overuse of music in scenes where it was unnecessary. Overall "The Batman" is a decent film with a cool world, good character work for it's main lead, good performances, specifically Pattinson and Farrell and competently shot. However, it is dragged down by a very mediocre screenplay and overuse of music. Expand

Overly long, crap car chases, not as smart as it thinks it is so a bit slow and boring a lot of the time, but I didn't drift off once! The imagery is nice but all that was shown in the trailers. Music was meh, 4 notes and man cashes a cheque? Landed on your feet there Mike!

That said the performances were all great, Farrell was amazing, and the story was pretty good. Looked nice, although it looked like a tracing of a Nolan comic with some red splashed about to make it different-ish.

I'd say the run time was an issue. Hopefull in a sequel they will have the confidence to trim a little more fat.

A fair few plot holes; why is everyone going along the ground in a flood rather than up? There's multi-story buildings everywhere in the city, just go up two floors! Also the Riddler won, he killed everyone he wanted too and destroyed the city, it's Atlantis at the end, there's no way the subway system and everything above could be rescued, they would have to pump out the entire sea after they rebuilt the walls.

Final note, at the end Catwoman comes to the rescue after checking out, but we get shots of her both arriving at the stadium and inside the stadium so it's not a suprise when she helps, this is pretty basic stuff.

Bruce was enveloped in being the Batman, why? I can speculate, but the movie never really showed me. Batman is on the riddler case, but the mystery never felt clever or suspenseful, it was bit confusing. I wanted more time with the riddler from the riddlers perspective. What made him into a ticking time bomb? I wanted to see his struggles; a game of cat and mouse.

Speaking of Catwoman, I could not have given a **** about that story. It detracted from the focus of the Riddler. However there is so many things they got right. Gotham, the suit, the casting, the mood, the claustrophobia, the corruption, the filth of the city. All exactly what I want in my Batman movie, but the story was Ehhhh...

There are so many scenes, where the actors are moving so slowly and it is done in little slow motion. It is annoying sometimes. The movie is also political correct: many black men, Catwoman is shown unrealistically strong, Michelle Pfeifer was much better as Catwoman in my view and there was no fire between that Catwoman and Batman. The character Riddler was interesting, he had some good character traits, but he was shown too nerdy.
But there are some good things in the movie: The dark settings was nice, it is almost like a film noir, maybe even a bit too dark. The action scenes were also great. And the focus on the detective part of Batman was interesting, but somehow artificial and unrealistic, I prefered the first quarter of the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even though I will tag this review as having spoilers I will still be as vague as possible so as not to ruin it for others. Like many others here I am a big Batman fan. I used to read the comics regularly, I have tattoos of Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Starfire – so I had high hope for this movie. The highlight of this movie for me was the cast, with the standouts being Pattinson, Wright and Farrell. Although I would have liked to have seen Farrell’s Penguin get a little more screen time – I mean this is a 3 hour movie. Also on that note, Andy Serkis is a great Alfred (who seems to be inspired by the Earth One graphic novels), but again he hardly has any screen time.

This movie is more of a thriller type story which I was completely into – it suits Batman and they did nail the tone of the movie. The time passed quickly despite the movie’s length. There were some lulls in the action, but the action that was there was fantastic.

So why only a 6 when others are giving 10s? Because the ending was terrible. Batman doesn’t out think or even catcher the Riddler. The only reason he gets caught is because he lets himself get caught. Then it is revealed that there is one more secret so I get my hopes back up thinking this is how Batman wins, but nope. Batman does figure out what is about to happen, but doesn’t stop it.

Then there is this stupid scene with Riddler copycats who manage to overwhelm Batman so he needs saving by Catwoman. In the end Batman gets a consolation prize. He saves some people from drowning. Good for him. I mean the Riddler still carried out his plan, and lets himself be caught, so Batman didn’t stop anything. It really ruined the movie for me.

If the ending had been more clever and Batman was able to out think the Riddler and stop his plans somehow in a well written manner then this movie would be one of the best Superhero movies I have seen, but honestly the ending was so bad I’ll probably never watch it again.

With an opening two hours that drone on endlessly with humorless, joyless, one-note darkness, the picture manages to redeem itself somewhat in its end run, though, by that point, it's almost irrelevant. The narrative's overreliance on rehashed plot devices, recurrent red herrings, uninspired action sequences, pedestrian villains and a surprising distance from its comic book roots combine to turn what should be a thrill ride into a mediocre snoozy slog. Thankfully, fine supporting performances from John Turturro, Colin Farrell and Paul Dano, as well as capable production values, help to enliven this project somewhat, but, again, this isn't enough to raise the film's overall quality level. Indeed, the rave factor being lavished on this offering truly isn't deserved, especially when compared to the movies in the Christopher Nolan trilogy, all three of which outclass this release at every turn. I can't say I'm sorry I saw this, but I doubt I'll watch it again or rush out to see any sequels that comes in its wake. Expand

It was tiring to watch. Related media: This is a reimagining of the Batman story, so there is no relation to the earlier films. Synopsis: The story starts 2 years after Batman first appeared in the terribly corrupt and crime-ridden Gotham City. The Riddler starts killing and leaving riddles for Batman to solve, clues that reveal how corruption had permeated many institutions, including one that is close to the Batman.

Positive:

1) It was a relief that it didn't suck after all the rumours about a difficult production and a difficult Robert Pattinson.

2)Zoe Kravitz portraying Catwoman is the best part of the film.

Negatives:

1) The film was overly dark, lighting-wise and tone-wise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe films are so successful because you can see what is happening and they are also almost all fun to watch. I know this is a film about the Dark Knight, but you need to contrast the dark parts with the brighter parts to make the dark parts stand out more. Otherwise, the viewers are just going to be drained at the end of the film. The director may have this intention, but I had felt drained and frustrated. 2) At nearly 3 hrs long (including credits), the film is 1 hour too long. I had looked at my watch far too many times during the film, indicating that I was bored. The story is too complex, there are too many characters to follow and there are too many things happening. There is also one dead villain being repeatedly mentioned but there were no photo or video of him thus making it hard to follow the story. 3) Robert Pattinson gets to act out his emo goth but I did not enjoy watching him. This film has turned me off watching his other films because I think many of them have him acting out in the same way too.

How would the different age groups rate this:

Children: (not rated for children).

Teens: Good.

Young adults: Excellent.

Medium-age adults: Average. Old adults: Poor

My rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Only worth to catch it on TV.

As a Batman movie it only surpasses the Joel Schumacher ones. I don't think I'll be seeing the sequel.

Rob did a great Batman but a dull uninteresting Bruce Wayne. Catwoman was well casted but as I feared her character is nothing more than a forced plot device, that didn't bring anything exciting to the table. ( Impo I can't stand the romantic tension, that not Batman to me.). To sum it up... First half was pretty awesome! But as the movie kept going everything started to feel flat, and I wish Catwoman was written better or just cut from the movie as I feel it took too much focus away on more important/interesting story telling. Lol the Riddler was bitter sweet by the end and I think the Penguin ended up being the most rememberable character oddly enough.

They were really bad, they were immature, as if riddler and the unseen character couldn't make any connection with their roles! Do you want an acceptable sample? Watch the Joker 2019, or the Nolan trilogy, or the Tim Burton trilogy, In the Batman 2022 i didn't see any challenging and breathtaking moments! Why should the dialogues be poetic in the sequence of the mayor's murder? Why is Batman in the middle of every where? Why does he talk so much? Why does Alfred look stupid? Why should the film be three hours when two hours are enough for these details? Batman, Cat Woman and Penguin, Those were just good! Expand

I was glad to get my money's worth with 3-hours run-time, but it felt too long overall and the film dragged in parts. There was also a collective audible groan in the screening following the line 'white male privilege.' Expand

Robert Pattison was a pretty decent choice for Batman/Bruce Wayne overall I can't fault the movie on his performance. It was interesting to see an amateurish Batman struggle as he was at the beginning still learning. Despite this the villain cast is kind of weak. Yet again they just turn the main villain Riddler into a bad Joker clone. Colin Farrell was an acceptable Penguin, but really just the side villain here still growing in the Gotham underworld. There are some good action scenes, but overall the main plot is too drawn out and it becomes a bit boring at times as this movie is definitely too long and not enough to fill in the gaps. Of the supporting cast the Jim Gordon selection was good, but Catwoman was so-so at best. She played a pivotal part, but the actress who played her was just kind of meh. Overall this is decent but still nowhere near Christopher Nolan's trilogy. Expand

The story is dark but the movie itself is even darker. Virtually the entire movie occurs at night and there is hardly enough light to see what is happening... The movie is also very, very long. At three hours, it could use some judicious editing. This is especially true for the first half of the movie. It sets the tone for the movie and it does so emphatically and repeatedly--nearly endlessly. The real action and the meat of the movie does not really get going until the last one-third of the movie. That part of the movie is when the story starts to get interesting. It just takes way too long to get there. And it's so very dark it's hard to see what is actually happening. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was so incredible dark and grim. Its almost like i would advise anyone with depression and dark thoughts to stay away..
This movie is stripped with over-the-top gadgetry where Batman uses more conventional tools. His Batmobile is just a souped up muscle car. Very stripped to the bone.
But the movie is more a noir-gothic detective flick (in colour) with just the right amount of action. Its like Sherlock Holmes in modern times where he dons a cape and a cowl.
They steal a great deal from Finchers Se7en. Especially from when they search The Riddlers apartment is ripped straight out of Se7en.
From there on out its all John Doe and Ledgers Joker motifs.
But the production value is top. Good performances from Pattinson and Wright. However, 3 hours is a tad bit to much. It drags plenty in the end.
But i dont think Batman can be taken more into darkness than this rendition..

Just not amazing. Like a lot of big budget, well made films. They seem to have splashes of brilliance, but lose momentum. This film did just that.

Unlike Nolan’s masterpiece, it manages to keep pace and intrigue over a long period of time.

The portrayal of The Riddler was probably my favorite part tablet it. He had an uncanny Ed Kemper vibe to him, that really made him feel very scary.
The action scenes were also great.

What ruined it for me though, was Robert Pattinson as Batman.
The way Batman was portrayedwas too edgy and emo for my liking. I read a lot of the Batman comics, and I get that he’s actually very often portrayed like this in the comics, but he’s also portrayed like this big, burly dude who got a hurt a long time ago, and now he’s dishing out his vengeance. He’s like a hurt kid hiding behind a ton of muscles.
While Robert Pattinson brings the muscles to the table, you can’t help but notice that he just looks like pale a vampire (I’m sorry, but it’s true), which makes the character seem more like a depressed teen, than a man who’s seen some **** Also, all scenes with Bruce Wayne could have been omitted as they served no purpose to further the plot.

Speaking of the plot, it’s very convoluted and messy. It draws some light inspiration from The Long Halloween, but combines it with a bigger-than-life, nonsensical story about The Riddler that would have worked well in a comic, but in this movie it falls flat.

I think the main reason for this is that the movie tried very hard to be grounded and gritty, but fails to ever mention why there’s a guy dressed like a bat in this dirty, realistic Gotham.
On one hand I understand why they chose not to address this; we’ve all heard the story a thousand times, and it doesn’t need to be retold - but on the other hand, here we have a city filled with terrible crime and cop drama, while a guy runs around dressed like a bat and everyone just accepts it.
Sure, the movies tries to justify this when The Batman first appears by having some thugs make fun of his costumes, but it is never brought up again or even questioned.

In “Joker”, which also rooted it self in realism, the character works because we get the backstory and an explanation for why a criminal dressed as a clown makes sense in this world.
On the other hand, we have Christopher Nolan’s movies, which were also somewhat realistic, but added lots of techy elements, that made the inclusion of a man dressed as a hi-tech bat feel less questionable.
“The Batman” just flat out ignores this whole conundrum; it’s a gritty, dark crime drama with a guy in a bat costume. When you say that sentence out loud, you’ll understand why the movie didn’t work for me. I’m not saying they had to retell his entire origin story, but when choosing to ditch the gadgets, make every other character dress in something more realistic and make Bruce Wayne as 2D as possible, it just seems so stupid that this guy would run around in that costume in this world. I know, I know; I’m supposed to just accept the premise because it’s a beloved character, but in my opinion, it just didn’t work in the world this movie set up.
