Anything but this marketing was so deceptive. I can’t believe Mattel greenlit this. This movie is very insulting to its source material, any woman who enjoyed Barbie growing up and especially insulting to men. Visually it looks great I will give it credit but such great design and actors wasted on a horrid film. This movie is ham fisted and mean spirited social commentary against men. Expand

It DEEPLY explores the concepts of death, patriarchy, feminism, dare-I-say-it wokeness, etc., concepts that SHOULD NOT be explored TO THAT EXTENT in what should obviously have been a family- and children-oriented film. It's terribly disappointing and dull, and it would confuse many demographics, particularly the children, who would not understand what they are watching. > Related media: I know very little of the Barbie universe.
> Negatives: > 1. After the fun intro, it quickly degenerates into a disappointing and dull film, with only occasional fun bits. I had looked at my watch several times and had really wanted to leave after the third quarter. > 2. It was a strange decision to DEEPLY discuss the concepts of death, patriarchy, feminism, wokeness, etc. in what was supposed to be a family- and children-oriented film..
> 3. If you hate Hollywood shoving wokeness and feminism down your throat, you'll really hate this film! For me, it was more like, 'What the heck is this?!! I don't mind a film imparting wokeness and feminism to the viewer, but do it gradually and do it cleverly. For this film, it was utterly in-your-face and done much, much worse than in the poor Captain Marvel and any other similar terrible films since. > 4. Which demographics is this film targetting? Certainly not the children, who will have no idea what the film is about! They must have been bored when watching this. Teenagers and young adults would not be interested in the oft-repeated wokeness message while older adults had never understood the message in the first place.
> 5. A few parts of the film appears to be designed for the stage (ala Broadway or West End) use and they really looked out of place in this film. Some films get away with this; this film just failed to do so. > 6. Female Mattel employee, Gloria, has a daughter who is quite relevant to the story. However, she frequently appears in the background, with nothing to do. This is a sign of bad directing and writing. >

Positives: None.

How would the different age groups rate this: > Children: Terrible (can't understand it at all and boring) > Teens: Poor > Young adults: Average
> Medium-age adults: Average > Older adults: Poor. > My rating: 2/5 (no half scores). Don't even bother watching it on TV.

Based on the trailers I was hopeful that this movie would be comedic. While it was full of jokes 95% of them dont land in the slighest. (Not just for me, no one in the theater laughed at them.) I knew going into this film that it was going to try to push a message. I believe this is where the film untimately fails. A good film can convey its message through creative story telling. Barbie instead decides to have the characters in the film directly tell you multiple times. Its almost like the writer of the film does not think people are intelligent enough to comprehend it otherwise. I award this film 3 points though because the sets and costumes are extremely well designed. In addition Ryan Gosling does an excellent job portraying Ken even with a terrible script. The music is also excellent. Expand

I couldn’t stand being preached to one more minute. It’s so in your face with its third wave feminist messaging, that any genuine attempts to be fun, girly and even entertaining get bogged down. I tried to give the film some leeway with how they treated the Ken’s, because this is a toy line marketed towards young girls. However so much of the humor, commentary and yes it’s messaging would be completely lost to the younger demographic. The demographic that this film is supposed to be for. Barbie literally tells a groups of construction workers that she doesn’t have a vagina and Ken doesn’t have a penis. That’s literally what she says and this is supposed to something for young kids. Also how would they know anything about anatomy? If the dolls are a reflection of the real life child (girl) that is playing with them, then what about the rest of the Barbie’s? Are their young girls still playing with them? Why aren’t they going through the same thing? Maybe they explain it later. As I mentioned I walked out because I couldn’t take its, in your face messaging. Don’t take your kids to see this, watch Legally Blonde instead. Expand

Mind-blowing cinematographic experience from start to finish.
Although some specific jokes and sections of the movie didn't hit the mark as they were expected to, this movie is filled with twisted satire, black humor, and a great direction and production, which combined with the incredible performances and the positive message it contains, makes "Barbie" a unique and unforgettable experience that will for sure get some conservative parents and their children out of the cinema.
I didn't expect it to be that incredible; congratulations to Greta and her team. I don't know how they let you release this sarcastic masterpiece, and I'd kill to read the original, uncensored script.

This year's or maybe all time? most controversial film is here. It is highest degree of modern third wave feminist fantasy, in other words, it has pretty much nothing to do with actual reality.

The way men are treated in this movie, is absolutely horrible and that's the only realistic part in this movie. Because men are treated horribly in real world as well. I have seen so many reviewers point out how this movie shows how badly women were treated and are treated right now. Yeah, i guess that's why men's suicide rate has been sky-high past 10 years. But i guess if you are rich or semi rich woman who lives in gate-protected LA neighborhoods, no wonder you don't know ANYTHING about real world.

This movie had most misleading marketing of all time. Yes, i mean it. Out of all movies ever made, this one takes the prize. They got so many young people hyped to watch fun-happy-go-lucky summer movie. Instead they got another feminist lecture and of course feminists in their 30s and 40s LOVE it.

It's sad reality that thanks to this marketing, it will have very strong opening weekend, easily over 100 million. One can just hope that after first weekend it drops off and most importantly, will be just forgotten.

It felt like they were going on a story, especially one that would end up with big problems in the future. I will continue to watch an average movie when the analogies made on the internet seem to confirm my suspicions. But Barbie is hiding with a pretty well-written script. He uses drama in the parts that should be serious, and humor in the parts. From that moment on, the script can be both preserved and conveyed to the audience much better. Moreover, when the editing is at a fluent pace, you watch the movie breathlessly. The fact that its duration is under two hours is also nice considering the length of mainstream movies in recent years. Expand

It’s definitely a good time with lots of laughs, regardless of your stance on the doll. Where it falls a BIT short is that it tries to pack a LOT into under two hours, leading to some messages not hitting as hard as they could and some plot points that just don’t make sense or add up.

Plus some of the non-principle characters/scenes feel a bit monotone compared to their technicolor world, and the film relies a bit upon overused tropes to drive its humor. There were many moments where I kept telling myself that the joke I was hearing felt familiar, but perhaps that is because the marketing team practically left nothing to be surprised by at the movie’s release.

Overall, if you have even remote interest, see it! But if the trailers didn’t do it for you, the movie doesn’t have a whole lot more to offer.

This handcrafted ball of serotonin is an absolute delight, leaving your heart brimming with joy from start to finish. Trust me, my cheeks were hurting too, but it was a small price to pay for the unbridled happiness that ensued.

In the magical realm of Barbieland, Oscar-worthy set designs work like portals, whisking you away to a realm of imagination and wonder. The chemistry between Margot and Ryan is nothing short of spectacular, radiating an irresistible charm that leaps off the screen and captures your heart.

Beyond the surface, the film's plot weaves a tapestry of surprises, defying predictability with cunning twists that keep you guessing throughout. Amid the laughter, "Barbie" serves as a brilliant mirror, reflecting upon society's norms, dismantling stereotypes, and fearlessly confronting issues of gender inequality and toxic masculinity. Such clever social commentary adds depth and meaning to this seemingly carefree adventure.

As for the comedy, prepare for a sidesplitting experience! Joke after joke lands perfectly, leaving you in stitches and gasping for breath. However, the true comedic gem is none other than Will Ferrel, who delivers a performance that leaves a lasting impression. With impeccable timing and wit, he steals the spotlight in every scene, creating comedic gold that will resonate with audiences of all ages.

While the movie does wear the hat of a toy advertisement, it walks the tightrope adeptly. Balancing appeal to the younger audience with engaging entertainment for adults, "Barbie" strikes a perfect harmony that caters to both ends of the spectrum.

With all the praise deservedly sung, there is only one minor drawback – the movie ends too soon! As the credits roll, you'll find yourself yearning for more of this delightful and captivating experience, a testament to the film's greatness.

Barbie is a perfect, funny, sad, inspiring movie. Everything about it was so perfect. It showed perfectly what’s happening in the real world. Like Taylor Swift once said, **** the patriarchy.”
The movie is feminist, but it doesn’t mean it’s men hating movie. It’s 2023, it’s time for men to understand what feminism is. It’s not “hating men.”
I related to Barbie so much with her existential crisis. We all go through it. Margot Robbie embodied Barbie so perfectly. She was born to play this role. She did it so perfectly. Margot is truly one of the best actresses our days, there is no role she can’t play. She is so dedicated to every character she plays and she makes them her own. She is perfect. It’s a shame she doesn’t have an Oscar yet.
Ryan Gosling, could anyone imagine he would be such a great comic? I knew he is talented but he is just perfect. Anyone who doubted him as a Ken apologize to him right now! I can’t imagine better Ken. He is perfect. He’ll definitely win an Oscar!
America Ferrera, what a performance! She was so good. Her monologue was everything. Her chemistry with Margot and Ariana Greenblatt was great. Ariana is a promising young actress, she will be a big star one day! Every actress and actor was so good. Even tho some had less screen time than others, I think everyone did great with their parts. Greta Gerwig proved once again, she is a genius! In Greta we trust! The movie was incredible! Deserves all the hype it got! I enjoyed it so much! Can’t wait to see it again! The ending was so unexpected and I loved it so much, I am sure you all will love it! Life in plastic, in fact, is fantastic!
