A fun time with lots of laughs.

People seem really upset that they bought tickets to this PG-13 Barbie movie marketed to adults and isn't for men or children under 13.

I expected the famous dolls Barbie and Ken to leave "Barbieland" and end up in the real world. There we would see comedy, where they try to adapt to the real world and see the differences between the worlds.
But that was not what we got to see. Or yes, we got to see the differences (very politically left). We were taught that in the real world men has the power, being masculine is something bad and you also heard the girl from the real world describe that "men hate women here". (In the real world)
As I understand it, the movie Barbie is aimed at children as it is PG-13 and it is about the toy Barbie that 5 year olds play with. Nevertheless, there is dirty humor and jokes with references about different people that only a 40-year-old could understand. In short, I think they miss their target audience with the humor in the film itself.
And there were various moments in the film where they did things without meaning to achieve a particular plot.
I think the positive thing about the film is how Barbieland itself looked like. Pink and happy.
Otherwise, the film is a huge disappointment for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Barbie is not a 1 and it's not a 10. People usually cling to one thing they like or dislike about the film, and base their whole score on this. Where Barbie excels is its cast and visual style, and some jokes land, mostly in the first 30 minutes of the film. However the moral/message of this movie is very cringe at certain points. I am dedicating my review to this cringe and how this is not the message we should be giving little girls, so if you're not interested, stop reading.

In Barbie World, only Barbies are allowed to live in a house or hold a power position, and (Gosling) Beach Ken can just go live on the beach or something. See, in Barbie world, the roles are reversed to the real world, or i should say 'how this movie perceives the real world'

The director Greta Gerwig, despite being a millionaire woman in the real world, seems to think that the “real world” is a place where all men are stupid sexist pigs who just got their positions in life because of that big dangly thing between their legs. And the movie really wants to hammer it home to you that the Barbie world is just perfect because it’s opposite the ‘real world’, a world where men (Kens) need to live on the streets like hobos, and only women hold positions of power. A Ken couldn’t hold a high-power position in the real world because they are just so darn stupid!

But are these Kens really so different from the men in the ‘real world’? The movie thinks the men in the ‘real world’ are way worse, especially those darn construction workers! Man, if you are a construction worker, you should probably not watch this movie because the film producers do not think highly of you. The movie takes two separate scenes with separate construction workers to really hammer home that construction workers are just generally sexist pigs and punching them for even talking to you is completely acceptable.

There is a scene where Ken goes to the hospital and tries to talk to the ‘doctor’, but just assumes that the woman he is talking to couldn’t be a doctor, because she’s a woman! Even though Ken literally comes from a world ruled by women and he’s probably never even seen a ‘male doctor’ in his life, they throw away the movie’s own established logic to make a ‘Men so sexist!’ joke. My girlfriend and I counted one male in this movie who was not a complete idiot, sexist, or beta and that was the lifeguard who told Ken that he couldnt be a lifeguard because he couldn’t swim, because Beach Ken was too general to have any actual specific talents that could be paying jobs at the beach, making it one of the funny jokes of this movie! Because there are funny, self-aware parts of this movie, it’s just weighted down by this awkward messaging, which goes full-throttle 30-45min into the movie.

The movie could have spent the time that was spent preaching about political messages to flesh out the relationship between the mother and daughter. Instead, the movie barely focused on their relationship. The mother and daughter ‘bonding’ in this movie is literally the mom going on multiple long-winded and chaotic rant monologues about feminism to men, and the daughter going ‘gee i never knew that my mom was a feminist? I love her now.’

To the Barbie producers, when even my feminist friend is calling your movie ‘sexist cringe’, you gone done messed up! Fighting and ‘ism’ with an ‘ism’ is not cool. Jokes are all fun and games and fortunately many of the jokes here are good, but the serious message of this movie is ‘All men are sexist lazy pigs, and should be subservient to women’. That’s not a joke. That’s the actual ‘lesson’ at the end of the movie. Just what?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beer. Horses. Cowboys. Trucks. The Godfather. Sports. Boxing. Fur coats. These are what make men who they are. #Patriarchy. This movie **** sucked. I know I'm not the target audience, but it'd be nice to feel welcome ya know. The message wasn't even subtle in the slightest. They might as well have just stared directly into the camera and say "Men bad, women good". And the world itself is broken af. So literally anyone could've just come into Barbie land THAT easily? Why was Will Ferrell in this movie? He could've been replaced with anybody and it wouldn't have made a difference. Is this movie a comedy? Didn't laugh a single time. Not even a chuckle. The only reason I don't give this like half a star is cause I didn't hate the ending. But I don't get the gynecologist line at the end. Is it a **** joke to make her feel more human or did she grow genitals cause she's been in the human world so long? Either way. This movie wasn't for me in literally any way. Awful movie, I can't wait for the hype to die down and people forget it exists. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost, the trailer was extremely misleading. This was not the Barbie in the real-world comedy i expected when i watched it.

Movie started out good, had some funny moments. But quickly changed into a man-hating fest and showing them off as completely incompetent.

They had the chance to promote equality at the end of the movie but the Barbies just laughed in the face of the Kens and basically told them to **** off.

In the hands of Greta Gerwig, the typical behavior of dolls and dolls, via imagination, takes on a critical form and points to many paths, visiting metalanguage, political-social relations, patriarchy and feminism, feelings (including the arrogant and insensitive posture of Barbie in front of Ken; as well as the sick transition of the doll in front of his girlfriend), such as existential crises or the acceptance of one's own social and gender condition. The work fulfilled the promise that we would have a product different from what one could imagine from a live-action Barbie. It is the assumed use of passive artificiality to show the contradictions, the suggestions of progress and the possibilities of a Universe with the face of the 1950s that no one ever had the courage to show what it really was, in all its nuances and possibilities of transformation. Until now. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Greta tirou onda nossa.

The movie fell off after the first 20 minutes and had many innuendos and overt sexual talk, inappropriate for children. Dishonest advertising for a man-hating propaganda piece, when will these types of movies get boring for the wokeists? Then, after all their attacks on men and masculinity, they wonder why young men are inspired by a figure like Andrew Tate (hint: maybe you're the problem). Here's an idea: make a movie that appeals to families and attempts to bridge societal divides instead of highlight and enflame them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, the start of the movie was very funny and nicely portrayed the Barbie world just as the trailers suggested. But as soon as they go to the real world the story suggested by the trailer falls apart. This movie is extremely political and misandrist. It portrays men as useless, dominating perverts and supports their oppression by women. The plot climax is the males (Kens) doing what the females (Barbies) have been doing to them all along, and the resolution is the males getting oppressed again. I initially thought the film was intentionally ironic with this plot because it was so far fetched, but on further thought I was grasping on to what little reference I could come up with to male specific problems. If this movie was actually balanced then deep analysis wouldn't be required to find the male support.

One scene that is truly evident of the films feminist propaganda is the arrest of Barbie and Ken when they enter the real world. Barbie hits a guy who sexually assaults her, the guy seemingly suffers no repercussions but Barbie gets arrested with all the perverted (male) cops enjoying it along the way.

The lack of any politics in the films advertising suggests it's a Trojan horse for feminist propaganda. I'm not quite that far in my thinking, I like believe it was avoiding the topic due to Disney's failure with woke films.

Overall... yay to oppression in the name of equality... I guess.

I think the truthful score is somewhere in the middle- it's a very well-made film with respect to cinematography, scriptwriting, acting, dancing, singing etc... And I happen to think most of the central feminism points are very well argued and delivered. I agree with those in the comments who mention that there's no need to do this at the expense of men as the film does, although anyone who argues against the need for a feminist film probably needs to look no further than half the comments in red and the way many of them (certainly not all) speak to or about women. It was fun, light, wacky, self aware, and introspective, and to do these things with such heart takes like a safecracker brand of light touch. I loved this film. And the worst and depressingly predictable thing is the immediate hate it is getting from people who either couldn't be bothered to think about the film's point because they don't feel they should have to in a movie about one of the most mass produced toys the world has ever seen, or they DID think about it, and it made them uncomfortable verging on enraged because this movie's villain is patriarchy, and they feel attacked as a result. The only complaint I have is that this is still the latest in a line of recent studio films that are basically long commercials celebrating consumerism masquerading as films. BUT I will forgive this one a bit; you could never adapt this script to get the film's point while avoiding the brand because Barbie's iconness as a product is part of her character. Which means I won't be running out to buy any new or vintage licensed Barbie merch for myself, but I will feel better about when I buy it for my family members and friends' kids for Christmas. Ok maybe one NWT Barbie tee off Poshmark or eBay for me. Or 5, we'll see what the prices with shipping look like... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie based on the stereotypical ideology that men and women are on war since the dawn of time. You know, Marx said it's a class struggle, Hitler said, it's a race struggle, and Mattel says it's a sex struggle. So, contrary to the factual laws of evolution, Mattel suggests that there is no benefit on cooperation between the XY and XX members of our species. Therefore, if you want liberation you have to go to war. A fictitious one, of course. Because if you take a look outside, you can see men working 24/7 with the sole purpose to oppress women, right? So, the next time that the statistics show that 95% of the deads in workplaces are men, or men dying sooner than their retirement age, you can blame the patriarchy. Yes, because a society controlled by men that don't favor men is as twisted as a Mattel's universe. Surely, Mattel's marketing effort with this movie has a "lesson": Pretend to be a hero by playing to be a victim. Because it's much better to be perceived as good person than being a good person, at least in the real world. Expand

But still fun. The preeching and lecturing really weakened the second half, although people's enjoyment will likely be determined by their own politics. Ironically, the best thing about the film was Ken. Ryan Gosling stole the show with excellent comedy and an interesting sub plot about thhe finding purpose in the world.

The film suffers from trying to balance being a kids film with more adult themes and jokes, with a slightly inconsistent outcome.

Wonderful cast, bold and classy script. It will annoy anyone who doesn't agree with the premise that basically humans should be treated better, and humans need to stop punching down in order to lift themselves up. Ryan Gosling's turn as stereotypical Ken is a delight but Allen... Allen was a wonderful surprise! Greta's script walks the line of not annoying Mattel (IP) too much and not overplaying the point that, yes, we know Barbie dolls are very problematic. There was cheering in our screening. Everyone seemed to leave on a high. Overall it is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Expand

After that it devolved into a platform, and even that didn't work as the creators propably intended. Jokes rarely landed after the first 45min, never heard a theater so silent after a punchline of a joke.

Also the message in this film is that Barbie is a villain. That's not the Barbie I grew up with. Barbie would not oppress or "put anyone on their right place", or leave anyone to suffer just because her own goal isn't yet met. And we're meant to cheer at the end for that? I call BS.

That's not feminism, and that IS NOT BARBIE!

Edit afternote:
Apparently criticizing this movie makes one an incel. Or a man for that matter - which btw I'm not.
When they can't refute your criticism with proper arguments or facts, and simply resort to name-calling and outright dismissing your opinions based on your assumed demographic... that's very telling.

Edit afternote II: My user review on RT (verified) was removed, so don't trust RT score.

Some people will find this unsatisfying, but only a moron would say that this makes the movie bad.

My theater was packed, and there was massive energy in the crowd. The movie was littered with hilarious jokes and the funniest musical numbers I’ve seen since Enchanted (2009). Both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling deliver phenomenal performances. One of the best movies I’ve seen this year, can’t wait to watch it again.

Barbie's motto is "you can be anything," and while it may suit the doll perfectly, it appears insufficient for a movie.

Barbie is undoubtedly a lighthearted and humorous movie, as the material naturally lends itself to such qualities. However, other aspects of the film become distorted and lose clarity when attempting to convey a preachy tone.

The film presents important messages, but it struggles to choose a single focus, leaving the audience without a clear direction. The plot attempts to explore numerous concepts, but they are merely touched upon and lack depth.

Even characters like America Ferrera and her daughter, who only serve as catalysts for the adventure, are overshadowed by the larger plot and their dramatic undercurrents are left unexplored once they enter Barbieland.

The irony lies in the fact that Barbie's message of identity seems to resonate more with Ken, as his entire existence revolves around her. Ultimately, Ken is the one who gets to discover that he can achieve an identity of his own, whereas the stereotypical Barbie was not supposed to want to be human. Instead, she becomes human because of the things that America Ferrera's character imprinted on her such as her depression, her fears and anxieties, causing a change in her personality that requires assimilation since she can't go back to the way things were for her. This, in my view, is what weakens the film's impact.
While it successfully achieves humor and laughs where it has to, its attempt to address serious issues lacks the right balance for genuine resonance.

Nonetheless, it's worth exploring and embracing the film for what it is: a functional comedy. Avoid over-analyzing aspects that don't require such scrutiny and simply enjoy the experience it offers.

While Margot"The Barbra Movie," as intellectuals such as myself will be calling this film going forward, is an all-out explosive piece of satire with a powerful cast and important lessons that certain types of people maybe NEED to hear. While Margot Robbie was fantastic as Barbie, I feel like Ryan Gosling did most of the heavy lifting as Ken. Everyone else (especially Kate McKinnon) was excellent as the supporting cast and elevated the whole dynamic of the film.

The overall message of the film was not only impactful, but well executed. It didn’t feel forced, and not once did it feel like I was being preached to. A few of the jokes didn’t necessarily “land,” but most of the humor was clever and thoughtful. Some folks might feel that they’re not the “target audience” for this film but I say “fooey” and “pshaw” to that! Go and see this movie for a good time and a good laugh.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Felt like I paid to watch a two hour ad. While the movie is often funny and clever, it was overall disappointing.

Hollow overtures to feminism, overt misandry, and forced diversity were used to clean up Mattel's image and please the uncritical mainstream audience. While graphics were appealing, Barbies character itself is poorly developed & the storyline is incoherent… The story could not be resolved without Greta literally preaching her message at the end.

The movie could have been about feminism and equality, instead, however, it promotes matriarchy as solution to patriarchy. “Barbie” is reinforcing the problem. The movie touches on several interesting themes but never explores them which feels like wasted potential.

- The Mother-Daughter relationship. The daughter is disconnected with her mother and acts hostilely at school. You thought the movie will revolve about fixing that problem? No. The daughter has no problem. She's just a teenager.
- Thinking about death: The mother misses playing with her daughter and starts designing sad or “weird” Barbies. How does that relate to Barbie thinking about death specifically?
- The corporate: The corporate people who are all men try to catch Barbie so they can send her back to Barbieland. But when Barbie went to Barbieland they still followed her. It took them too long to get there for no apparent reason. And when they got there it just gets very confusing. Why are they in there?
- Barbie wanting to be human: A theme that starts with Barbie‘s interaction with an old lady and her observing other people. That motive disappears completely until the end, Barbie has no motivation to become human throughout the movie.
- Kens: The Movie tries to make Ken the bad guy even though he was just trying to be noticed and loved (woman good man bad mentality). You’d expect Ken has any meaningful development after the downfall of Kendom but he remains Barbie’s accessory.

First of all, this is a highly completed work, the actors are faithful to the characters, and the rhythm completely obeys the expression. In this regard, its neat plot is far better than most Hollywood movies in recent years.

However, the content expression of the film still gives people a feeling of disconnection, although not strong, but still palpable, mainly because there is a logical gap that is difficult to bridge between the absurd form of asking questions and the superficial preaching of solving them.

In the end, the awakening and self-persuasion of the classic Barbie, to put it bluntly, is to restore the "Paradise" and regain those positions, rather than essentially rebuilding the understanding and cognition of gender and identity. On the contrary, it is the realistic and weathered mother who expresses the most sincere "ideal of being an ordinary person". I feel like this could have been done better.

As for the philosophical questioning of the meaning of human beings that appears at the end of the film, instead of finding it abrupt, I think it is just right. After nearly 120 minutes of color shock and gender questioning, everyone should understand: the world should be better, but women are not the only ones who need to strive for perfection.

Warning: This movie is a box office trap - do not waste your money. It's the first movie I've ever had to walk out of the theater on halfway through. Below I'll explain why, in depth (no spoilers):

I'll start with the positives:
- Great costume and set design, providing a distinctly bright, technicolor visual style
- Good acting from the male and female leads, Margo and Ryan
- Some quality camerawork
- Some may enjoy the self-aware, breaking the fourth wall, Deadpool-esque comedy, but the jokes are hit-and-miss, mostly low-brow, and seem an attempt to distract from the films shortcomings: lack of plot.
- Die-hard Barbie fans will likely want to go to see it simply because it is now a part of the Barbie Universe, but will likely leave feeling betrayed and that the Barbie brand has been defiled.

Now the negatives:
- Plot and characters are very weak, the empty narrative and fabulous set design serves simply as a Technicolor vessel for delivering it's political diatribe, and not much more.
-It is a trojan horse. The trailers were intentionally vague and nobody I met had any idea what the movie was about heading into it. This is on purpose- the movie is not a lighthearted, fun, summer comedy many expected. If people knew, they would not go.
- This movie is NOT for children - not only will the creators' radical views go way over their heads, it is simply not interesting, fun, nor is the comedy or messaging child-friendly.
- This movie is NOT for Barbie fans: I've experienced many Barbie fans walk away furious, as it does not represent the empowerment and message if equality, striving, and opportunity that Barbie represented to them, in fact it crushes that. The movie is an extended radical feminist diatribe, packaged within the guise of a fun summer blockbuster, maximizing both profits and political reach. Hollywood is very liberal- I get that, and am middle-of-the-road on the political spectrum, not right-wing or conservative by any means- and I respect many of its creations and nuanced political commentaries, but...
- This is not that. This is not nuanced, it is not subtle. The movie treats its audience as unintelligent, and half of the movie consists of very direct, radical feminist speeches, "preaching" their message down to the uniformed audience. Not just once, but numerous times. Even if I disagreed on the views, I would give credit to a movie that delivers it's message impactfully, in a nuanced way, or with deft creative craftsmanship. This is not that, not even close. It is so on the nose it becomes cringe, more and more as the movie goes on.
- The views it broadcasts are dangerous as well, particularly to the children and youth you would think are the target demographic: anti-white, anti-male, anti-homemaker, and the movie goes so far as to disrespect women who choose to get pregnant and have children. It does not share a message of equality for all, but rather revenge, subjugation, and disrespect of men. If you agree with those sentiments you will likely enjoy this film, even if it presents them in such a low-brow, in-your-face way, that requires no real thinking on the audience's part. Therein lies the target audience.
- This movie provides a no-thought-required circle-jerk for it's target audience: re-affirming the views of the more radical breed of social justice warriors, at the expense (literal expense, given the droves arriving in theaters and emptying their wallets due to social media advertising) of Barbie fans, the Barbie brand, and the rest of its unsuspecting audience.
- Spend your money this week to see Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Mission Impossible, Oppenheimer, Spiderman, or basically any other film that's playing now, as they are all better worth your time, and money.

I don't say that lightly, from start to finish the movie is terrible, the movie startes with barbie living in barbieland and Ken being basically a slave, she finishes the movie by liberating barbieland and Ken returning to being a slave. I wouldn't have minded, if something happened between the start and finish, but nothing did, the movie had nothing to it, terrible cgi, no storyline and I will never get those 2 hours of my life back.

I went to see this after oppenheimer, which showed even more how bad barbie was. After watching this fast and furious 9 is Oscar worthy, that's how bad this film is, I would never recommend this to anyone, and I will never watch it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is not 'man-hating' or 'propaganda, as a man who came up to me in the theatre claimed. This movie is about men accepting themselves and building relationships outside of women, and women accepting the pressure the patriacy puts onto us and still wanting to achieve more. Its not the movie that most, even me, were anticipating. The fun and satirical trailers don't truly reflect the meat of this movie but nevertheless it was fun. Not everything has to be so serious, at the end of the day its a MOVIE and not children are being brainwashed by it. However, the movie as a piece of cinema was rough. Its a little choppy and messy in places with world building that really lacks. Despite having a narrator they don't use her very efficiently, instead exposition is used which takes longer. I think if you have a narrator you should really use them. Things are not fleshed out as well as they should be, especially the mother and daughter relationship and how that grows, and I think if that was less of the focus the movie would benefit. The Barbie Movie struggles to focus on the fantastical world of barbie, and perhaps if it was a plot centred around that universe it would benefit. But objectively it is a fine movie with and incredible soundtrack and some impressive acting. As always, the fans and the fandom make anything great and the response the movie has gotten has gone beyond the plot. It shows both women and girls deep appreciation for a toy that transcends generations and captures the hearts and fashion of so many. Expand

Honestly, the film had it all: great production design, great clothing and awesome actors and obviously good comedy. But in the last third pard of the film, it goes down and wasted it all.

A very poorly written bait and switch.

Do any of you remember Land of the Lost (2009 movie) with Will Ferrell? That's what this reminds me of in that literally all of the funny moments were in the trailers, and the rest of the movie was just a slog that was either tedious, boring, or just plain terrible.

It doesn't even matter how much money this piece of trash makes. Fast and furious and Captain Marvel made billion dollars as well. Does that make them good or respected movies? No.
