I would have given 5 stars if they wouldve stuck to just one plot but other than that, I enjoyed this movie. Expand

So funny yet had so many underlying themes that truly reflect the human race. It surprised me by playing into both perspectives of a male and a female in society and showed several parallels when Barbie world and the real world intertwined. I think despite what people say about the loose ends that may not have been tied off such as the daughter and mothers relationship, I think that if it did tie those ends, it would not be the same. These days a plot is so predictable and I feel like this movie for once surprised me consistently. Every turn and twist implemented was a good one and I enjoyed every second. Not to mention the soundtrack, it was incredible. I loved every part of this movie and it really does portray accurate themes of life in the sense that there isn’t always a perfect ending for everyone. I highly recommend the movie, GO WATCH!!!! A full spectrum of emotions is experienced here amidst hilarious gender role reversal (enter: insecure man child Ken). Barbie is visually entertaining and cheeky with some surprisingly powerful scenes. America Ferrara’s character expressing her disgust for women’s lifelong battle with needing to measure up to society’s unrealistic expectations of women is brilliant! Definitely a must see mother/ daughter movie as it will spark some important conversation. The movie delivers on most level and is a must see in my opinion! Expand

Barbie movie series seamlessly blends charming storytelling, beautiful animation, and an empowering message that will warm the hearts of fans old and new.
Its ability to transcend the boundaries of imagination while remaining relevant and relatable.

The animation style deserves special commendation, as it showcases the industry's continued advancement in creating vibrant and detailed visuals.

Moreover, the story itself is both heartwarming and empowering. Barbie, as always, leads by example, showcasing her kindness, bravery, and determination.

While the film beautifully balances humor and adventure, there are moments where the plot feels slightly predictable. However, this doesn't significantly detract from the film's overall appeal, as the strong messages and captivating visuals overshadow any minor shortcomings.

In conclusion, the 2023 Barbie movie is a must-watch for all Barbie enthusiasts and those seeking an entertaining and inspiring animated adventure. With its stunning animation, well-crafted storytelling, and positive values, this film proves why Barbie continues to be an iconic and beloved character.

A modern hot pink masterpiece.

To summarize the negative reviews: some people did not understand the sarcasm of Barbie's matriarchal society being "perfect" and felt victimized by the female empowerment narrative. They neither watched the previews nor read the reviews, but they feel justified in saying it was a blindside.

This movie invites you into the rich (and needless to say vibrant) world of the familiar stereotypical Barbie doll, with the welcome additions of hilarious Barbie lore. The plot centers around Barbie's existential crisis when her feet flatten and she discovers she has cellulite and her journey to correct these glitches and return to her perfect life. If you're hoping for a cathartic cry or two, you're absolutely in luck. Inconsolable laughter? You got it. Cringe so hard you nearly sink through the seat? Yep. It's a journey. Margot Robbie and America Ferrera are magnificent. It's worth at least one watch, maybe two.

The first half of the movie genuinely made me laugh on multiple occasions, something that I find very rare in cinema experiences, even from some of my favourite movies. I went into the film thinking that it would be a little corny and maybe even a hard watch, but it exceeded all of my expectations. In all categories I found it exceptional, it was serious in some sections, but lighthearted and funny in others, the different emotions were spread perfectly throughout the film, it never felt jarring or forced. The set and character design was also perfectly executed, with every choice feeling deliberate and only feeling out of place when intended by the film makers. The characters conveyed the message of the movie subtly and beautifully, giving each character a distinct style.

For the overall message of the film, it is beautifully conveyed and as such it is powerful. This movie was one of the most relatable and empowering movies I have seen. Overall this was a beautifully executed film, if you think it might be too silly or poorly executed, watch it and see for yourself, I highly recommend it.

I know this review may sound like a joke, but I am dead serious, this is a wondrous movie and you should watch it if you have even the slightest interest in seeing it.

Fantastic funny and feels fresh! One of the best studio comedies I have seen in a long time. I feel like they just don't make great studio comedies anymore. A great parody and self de construct of the barbie toy. The jokes hit pretty well, the performances are great. I will say the end gets a little messy but overall this was great.

I should mention that Issa Rae & America Ferrera are just so awesome a-swell in this world. Now! having grown up in the 90s and seeing how popular the toys were, I was apart of the “Barbie” crazed era in primary school. It’s really cool knowing everyone has another summer blockbuster coming that they can be truely excited about. Really hope that everyone can give “Barbie” a chance, because it has a lot of HEART. This movie was fun and paid great homage to both those who love Barbie and those who don't. My husband - who could care less about Barbie and had to be dragged to the theater - left talking about how much he enjoyed the movie and even said he would go see it again in theaters. We were laughing so much. The humor was perfect for adults but without being inappropriate for kids. Even the songs were so funny! The first song is just hilarious if you listen to the lyrics. The costumes were amazing. The dance scenes were fun. The Ken storyline was HILARIOUS. Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu were just fantastic and Michael Cera as Allan was so good!!

I've seen people online mad that they were making fun of the patriarchy and I feel like if you feel attacked by the movie, you're probably part of the problem. My husband had no problem with the lighthearted jests they made towards men, even saying he felt like he was guilty of some of them (like trying to always help me with sports).

The theme was pro-women without being too overly feminist. It was about appreciating the beauty with being a woman, ALL aspects of being a woman including the beauty of aging, finding our power, and even learning that it's okay to be an average woman (you don't have to be Presidents or physicists to be a powerful woman). I think it's such an important message that leaves you feeling proud to be a woman.

Overall, this movie is so fun and perfect for summer. Go watch it again and again for some fun.

Her perfect life is upended she and Ken visit the real world. Writers Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig (who also directed) have come up with brilliantly clever ways to upend expectations, while making meaningful statements and providing lots of glee. Robbie makes a perfect Barbie, but it's really Ryan Gosling, as her special Ken, who makes the best impression. He takes a non-descript character and makes him sweetly charming and simply hilarious, a brilliant turn. Gerwig has infused every frame with bright energy, delightful moments and surprisingly subversive observations (esp. the Mattel references). The final dramatic scenes could have been a bit shorter, but the whole movie is filled with lovable whimsy and giddy fun (and a few touches of humanity). It's so much fun to play with this Barbie! Second: the worst thing is that some decided to advertise the film as "feminist", which threw it into the middle of the ideological war... Third: if the film had come out in 2000s we would have treated it like "Pinocchio", "Bicentennial Man" or "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (yes, there is motive of searching for own humanity and meaning) and we would laugh ourselves to tears. The film is funny, it's quite successful satire on all sorts of extremes: feminism, patriarchy, stereotypes or weird warriors for the "social cause", but with some unnecessary quirks (mocking Pregnat Barbie for example). A reflection in a distorted mirror, satire, exaggeration, playing on stereotypes... Surprise, surprise: in Barbieland there are Barbies everywhere! The world is plastic, exaggerated, just like the world of Barbie, and Ken is just an accessory - just like in the world of toys! "Real" world is exaggerated more and this part is sometimes more tiresome... And no one from the target audience will appreciate this strange (and creepy!) reference to "2001: Space odyssey" from the beginning of film, a vain effort. Once it would have been an absurdly funny comedy in pink and plastic, today it is "woke" and divisive... because everything must be like in the "real world", sad. It is a very positive film, and we too easily fall into extremes. Blockbuster that is original, imaginative and not a tenth part of a well-known brand. And gives you food for thought. PROS: Margot Robbie is perfect! Ryan Gosling as Ken steals the show! Development and transformation of these characters. Visuals, set and costume design in Barbieland. Attention to details. Cast and acting (Yes!). CONS: Sometimes too preachy and then complaining about "patriarchy" has crossed the line of cringe... Expand

A Very Conflicting Film on Many Fronts For Me.

Growing up, I was a pretty big fan of the old Barbie Direct to Video Movies. Being a boy growing up in the late 2000s I had to watch them while everyone else was asleep, like I was doing something taboo (which it kind of was at the time). Girls in elementary and middle school would talk about them, but I knew if I even said a word about it it'd be constant scrutiny, from them and my other classmates. Those films, as well as the Tinker Bell ones, WInx Club, Monster High, Totally Spies, they all were very formative for me as a kid.

Recently, as an adult, i've finally been able to talk about these things and be open about liking them, and I was very excited to see this movie. Going into the theatre was fun, seeing everyone dressed up in pink was neat and I was having a blast through the first half of the movie. Once they got to the real world, I was still laughing at all of the patriarchy jokes they were making, as I thought the movie was making the point that both worlds were broken and they had to work together to fix them. However, as the movie went on, it just felt like the narrative was screaming at me in the theatre that I shouldn't be there. Even if I loved the sets, the performances, the acting, the jokes, I couldn't get past that this movie of a character that I personally really liked was reaffirming all those childhood traumas of being othered as a man who liked things considered "girly."

The movie seems to set out to break gender roles, but it honestly just reinforces them by alienating a lot of people who would really love to support its other message of humanity and everyone being flawed in their own way. These "Girls Rule, Boys Drool" narratives are, in my opinion, very juvenile and only serve to hinder any progress we can make in breaking gender norms and making everyone feel comfortable to be themselves. I loved literally everything else about this movie, but a movie that makes me feel like less of a human being will never not be painful.

I can say that THIS is the BEST Barbie Movie ever made!!!

Margot was phenomenal as Barbie and Ryan was fantastic & surprisingly funny as Ken! These two performances are a huge W for me!!!

I laughed & cried throughout the film and after I left the theater it left an emotional but happy impact on me! And it's all thanks to Greta Gerwig's direction and writing. This feels like Toy Story 3 but it's made for teens & adults centered on Barbie with a lot of love, humor, care, feeling, and emotion put into it.

With a female director directing Barbie, Greta had put a lot of love and feeling into a movie centered on a certain doll "Barbie"

And now with Greta directing the Netflix Chronicles of Narnia Reboot. I now believe in her! I think she's gonna do great in doing a Chronicles of Narnia reboot! And if James Gunn hires her to direct DCU's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, I'll always be proud and believe in her.

And after I watched Barbie... Greta Gerwig is now my favorite female director!!!

The jokes were witty, funny, well-written and did not impede on the tone of any serious moments. Barbie was for sure targeted for kids but made for adults to enjoy just as much as the little ones. The casting was phenomenal, every actor embodied their character, Margot Robbie is dynamite in her role delivering every line with sincerity and real feeling. Ryan Gosling was the epitome of Ken, fun, and lovable but he was also able to sublimely deliver emotions that one would not associate with Ken. With 2 powerful stars you would think that the secondary characters would be unnoteworthy, but Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell command the screen so remarkably, not to mention every other Barbie and Ken, and Allen too. Anything revolting against the "status quo" of "WOMEN MUST BE PUT DOWN" will get unecessarythis movie might just be the first one I've ever seen that tackles women's rights with a direct attack on all the cliche IM THE MAN sorta stuff. Anything revolting against the "status quo" of "WOMEN MUST BE PUT DOWN" will get unecessary hatred especially on a platform that does not need proof you went to see the movie, anyone can write a review which leaves room for misogynistic men to try to assume control over the situation by writing bad reviews and making the movie seem like a flop! Its really not, its amazing, the acting, the HUMOR, the story, and the content! Its a literal and full masterpiece! The humor was abundent all throughout the movie, the ending I still cannot get over, it tackled and adressed some very serious problems about society, and it left me feeling absolutely inspired to support women and to do my part in making the world a better place for each other! The theatre experience was even more amazing! Everyone decked out in pink, the theatre constantly roaring with laughter, it felt like a real family, bonding over trauma the world that's been taken over by man has given women. I seriously recommend watching it ESPECIALLY for men. I'm sure very little will go see this movie (even though we did see a ton of men at the theatre watching it), some men are just too self absorbed to care if women are suffering, being abused, or just plain harassed so Ill doubt they'll consider this movie as a MUST, but maybe, just maybe they'll walk away being a little bit more empathetic to women. Or take it as unreasonable complaining LIKE IT WAS ADRESSED IN THE MOVIE. "You have to love being a mother, but you can't talk about your kids all the time or that's bragging, you have to suffer in silence because if you speak out it'll be considered complaining" not sure if this is the exact quote or not, but you will hear something similar in the climax of the film with a ton of other sad truths of what its like. So to everyone who watched this movie, and to everyone planning to go watch it, lets fight back on our own front, write reviews! Explain what it was actually like to see the movie and lets raise these reviews! This is one movie worth watching. Expand

Barbie's existential crisis was funny and enlightening. It went beyond social commentary on gender to explore themes like death and what a gift it is to experience the whole gamut of human existence vs a predetermined perfect trajectory. I never played with Barbie so I wasn't sure if this movie was going to do anything for me but I found it a fun celebration of femininity. Those who are saying that this movie is against men, it's not - the point is that when things are out of balance, when people are not allowed to achieve their own potential then society itself loses out. This imbalance occurred in Barbieland, a fictitious place run by women, and "the real world" primarily run by men. No one is saying the Barbies in Barbieland were bad because they allowed that to happen. Similarly no one is blaming men in the "real world." It's a natural outcome of the imbalance of power and opportunity. Expand

You could tell who was going to watch Barbie based on what they were wearing. Inside the screen, it felt comfortable and our audience was laughing together.

The movie itself takes a whimsical approach to deconstructing patriarchal issues and idealising a world run by women. It was only at one point towards the resolve of the movie that this narrative was lost on me, but it picked right back up afterwards.

I would 100% watch again. It was Kenough for me.

I think it’s this in-between space of feeling both fulfilled and not fulfilled by viewing it that makes interesting conversation and makes it art.

Bottom line: The film both said a lot and didn’t. It’s surface level but also raising some uncomfortable questions. Oh and it’s sparkly, it can be entertaining and vibrant, and funny too. Loved the Ken dancing scene! Made me want to give ken “more love”, specifically, like the space to be “ken”. Is this maybe a reflection of white corporate feminism and it’s limitations?

If you're so aligned and don't listen carefully, appealing phrases and and sounds wash over you and sound good, but if you actually pay close attention or read text of it, it was incoherent nonsense saying very little, at best.

The pinnacle was the "It's hard to be a woman" speech by the America Ferrera character that sounds great until you listen critically. When you discard issues all humans face equally, you're left with a few only women face, but a bunch that where it's actually easy to be a woman. Women can't express fear!? They never get thanks for their role!? - seriously? You could easily list many unfair things women in particular have to face in life, but instead we got this drivel. And this is on top of the random inexplicable plot, that just makes no sense and it's a lightweight and weak movie.

It's otherwise likeable with had a number of sweet and hilarious moments and hints of depth trying to get out, but overall it was just incoherent and inexplicable, and the reactionary idiots aren't entirely wrong to point out misandry. I expect their very negative reviews, but I'm more baffled by the 10 star reviews that declare this almost perfect. I don't know what movie they watched but I think they just saw what they wanted to see, not what was on the screen.

Barbie

Dazzling, heartfelt and brilliantly funny. Comedy of the year, movie of the summer!

Barbie is a beautiful blend of comedy and heart. Aided deftly by colourful visuals, Greta Gerwig tells the story of a doll coming to life, with as much intellect and emotion that's needed.

Barbie is unabashedly feminist, will ruffle some feathers (as it should), and will delight even more people. Themes of existentialism, individualism and masculinity are also dealt with.

Despite being a product of Mattel, Greta found a way to critique the parent company (although it's funny that the product that mocks the maker ends up raking in more money for the maker).

Margot Robbie is Barbie! She was an agreeable canvas, and she allowed Greta Gerwig to paint a very nuanced portrayal of Barbie. Ryan Gosling turns out a career-best performance in Barbie, stealing and shining in all of his scenes. The supporting cast also gives great performances.

The soundtrack was fitting, guiding the movie down to the finish line with Billie Eilish's 'What was I made for' delivering a wonderful culmination. The set design and costumes were brilliant too.

The lore of Barbie spans over six decades, so compressing it all into one movie was a definite challenge, but Greta was able to bring the most important things (including Easter eggs and fan service) to the movie.

Barbie does have its failings, and the most noticeable is the plot. The first half is very intriguing, quirky and pays homage to other movies, but the second half isn't as tight.

Barbie isn't perfect but it's a beautiful dose of everything good.

Greta tirou onda nossa. Genial Esse filme de fato me quebrou no final da Barbie se apresentando como Bárbara e indo ao ginecologia e sorrindo com seu humor e peculiaridade.

Very lazy and simplistic in it’s themes and messaging. I was expecting more from Gerwig in exploring identity, autonomy, and the journey inward, instead of the constant meaningless patriarchy babble and the simple “life is terrible”, oh no wait, “it’s great” ponderings. The only part of the themes and exploration that landed very well was the insight into few positive but mostly negative impact of Barbie toys on women and especially young girls. Wonderfully and ecstatically formed. It was designed to be the Barbiest Barbie film that ever Barbied. Gosling and Robbie are fantastic. The real world stuff was a bit dull and saccharine and you could cut out all of the Mattel boardroom stuff as it simply wasn’t funny or smart, and added very little. But the Barbie world sequences were thrilling and joyous. Which is what a Barbie film should be. Gerwig has created a fully realised, interesting world with a unique vision and voice. Expand

I loved seeing all the different actors from various shows all together, especially some of the Sex Education actors. I loved that this movie was very cheerful and entertaining but also had a great message, its seemingly clear that this movie has made other women confident on what they want to be or what they're going to do with their lives. I loved seeing the diversity of the barbies and seeing Arianna Greenblatt for the first time since she was like 8 is so interesting. Loved the way this movie was played out, the casting was amazing, and it seemed to really touch everyone. Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are amazing people as well as actors. I was sobbing in the theater towards the end. And I love the Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj song for the credits, perfect ending. Expand

Very low anxiety. Plot has low tension. All the characters were over the top and fun. Tells a silly story with smart jokes. Entire film is fun to watch.

Not going to lie, I laugh considerably.

Watching it was fun 'cause I was curious to know how they would approach this world. Barbieland nails it with great visual identity, the cast was amazing and the plot serves to the point they wanted to make. Now, about the points...

I felt provoked sometimes in this movie and I consider it good, since questioning yourself is healthy sometimes. Some points were understandable and fun. Unpredictables and predictables. A little of everything, but most positive. My problem with this movie is how coarse it is about telling us its message. There is no problem about being a feminist drive movie, but when the director tells us about it openly (in an interview), saying "It most certainly is a feminist film" and the script throws his messages at us with huge exposure, that make the art itself one-dimensional.

I love to interpret scenes, characters, and the plot as a whole. But when the start point is already painted, It feels more like a lecture than anything else. There is no point in rewatching it when the point is as explicit as it is. I understand that's the director's objective, but I have the right to dislike it the way it is.

Fortunately, the movie is fun anyway. Margot Robbie is amazing, but not gonna lie, Ryan Gosling stole the thunder when he is in. The battle on the beach was the best moment, Alan is crazy and some takes are good anyway.

“Barbie” is the first live-action feature film after numerous computer-animated and television films.
After a shrewd promotional, marketing and commercial campaign that has raised expectations, expectations and a real Barbie-Mania, the latest film directed by Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird" and "Little Women") is finally arriving in cinemas, based on the famous fashion doll line of the same name born from the mind of Ruth Hendler and marketed by Mattel since 1959.
“Barbie”, scripted with acumen and wit by the director together with her partner Noah Baumbach, is an ambitious film in which the homage to the most iconic doll of all time, is not only strengthened by an elegant aesthetic and a surrealist heart imbued with rich and cultured quotations and cinephile references, but also becomes an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a woman today, as well as on the daily difficulties and struggles that this brings with it.
The work is not only celebratory, but it is also a mix of criticism (see the jabs at Hollywood, at Mattel – here in the figure of the CEO played by Will Ferrell, at all human contradictions) and social satire (the controversial standards of perfection and beauty associated with Barbie), as well as a cinema that speaks of female empowerment directly from the sensitive voices of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig.
In this brilliant, eccentric and imaginative film, the world's most famous doll experiences her personal growth, the transition from a utopian world to a real one, and essentially her evolution into becoming a human being and a woman.
The protagonist experiences the value of women on herself and conveys the impossibility of aesthetic perfection (and not only); and above all she affirms a strong sense of humanism that must be respected and carried forward. There can be no awareness, maturity and rebirth without (having first experienced) suffering and pain.
The film is enjoyable, funny but also unequal. It alternates very successful moments with less resolved ones.
Its most effective strengths are the irony, the pastel-colored photography, the softly pink scenography of Barbieland, the costumes, the convincing interpretations of the whole cast, the well-choreographed musical sequences between songs and ballets (there is also Dua Lipa – her hit “Dance the Night”), the soundtrack composed by Alexandre Desplat, some dazzling ideas of the enthralling screenplay (above all the incipit reminiscent of the monolith of “2001: A Space Odyssey"). Among the weaknesses, an excessive weight given both to the "subversive" aspect towards what the plastic Barbie doll has always depicted and represented (the ideal of the female body unachievable by consumerist and anarcho-capitalist behavior), and towards a specific didactic ambition which, if they could work to affirm the educational intent of the film, on the other hand greatly hinder the narrative fluidity, a greater inventiveness profuse in it, and ultimately the emotional charge.
Despite this basic non-balance and despite a mixture of genres, tones and registers that are not very cohesive with each other, the film is stratified and hides much more than what it shows.
In this sense, the concepts of existentialism and individualism are appreciable, which in some way have been argued and treated in the intertwining of events and characters: both Barbie and Ken undertake similar paths that will lead them to self-awareness, after having ventured into the real world and having discovered that it is a repressive patriarchal society, divergent from the matriarchal utopia of Barbieland; a real world in sharp contrast with a person's autonomy of thought, with respect for the other in his differences from us, and with the idea of what makes us human. Therefore, thinking of yourself as a self-determining individual makes you question the conditioning norms and expectations of society.
Furthermore, the script, directing style and staging also move in a functional way to the main ideological discourse that underlies the entire work (that simply being oneself which is already enough; or that fact that every girl is free to transform her Barbie fashion doll into something alternative to the blonde and elegant icon originally designed by Mattel), but despite this all along the way, they remain a little too much prisoner of these valid "messages" and of their own intellectual nature, leaving the ways in which the issues mentioned were dealt with were ordered and disorganized, as well as their insights were a bit incomplete and incomplete (especially in the central act and in the epilogue).
Net of this, net of renunciations and limits (also generated by the desire to speak to every generation), the film remains an entertaining, intelligent and humanistic entertainment that can be appreciated both in its visual-sound dimension, very accurate and refined, and in its more socially/existential "educational" one... Score: 6 / 7 out of 10

There is nothing subtle in the Barbieland. Barbie unabashedly and advertently attempts to tell the story. It is a satire to highlight the contrast between the real and the fake world which a lot of dumb people are shrugging off saying it is complaining and preaching. It is a perfect ending to both Barbie and Ken's story. I wished Allen got his too. overlooking Allen is my only issue with this movie.
The casting was perfect. Especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling shine through and through. Hope it opens new doors for Greta. Can't wait to see more from her.

I loved the idea of the movie and how it worked. It was not one of my favorites for sure, but I was excited while watching it. It was good, but could be better articulated. XOXO

It perfectly described the transition of child/girlhood into womanhood and the constant struggle with the expectations of each. The portrayal of Ken was impeccable representing just how quickly things can be taken away from women by men whilst also perfectly showing how they don’t know what they are doing it is all subconscious ( you don’t blame ken) it is the society that has set up and the manipulation of peoples feelings that creates unjust situations. I give greta gerwig my heart for making this movie a love letter to all alone it made me feel safe and accepted as a girl, a woman and a barbie which we all are! Expand
