This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is good. It hold and mirror up to the Patriarchy (not men as so many believe) and shows how it effects not just women but the men as well. If people actually paid attention when the are "deprogramming" the other Barbies they talk about how the patriarchy cause men to think with their egos and cause harm to each other because they are focused on trying to make sure they are tough and masculine. It all resolves with Ken realizing that he is someone outside of being barbies friend (because they are not bf/gf she does not like him that way as is stated multiple times)

Also alot of dude bros that are upset with how men are portrayed when Barbie first enters the real world just simply don't listen to women and their stories because the things that happen are very real and start happening from a very young age

All in all Greta killed it once again. Margot and Ryan put on fantastic performances and the movie was gorgeous.

Overall Review:

Firstly, in all my years of being a Cinema Connoisseur, it is rare to see a movie sell out as quickly and widespread as Barbie. So well done to the Barbie marketing team!

I walked in the cinema with no expectations, but I have to say I was overall pleasantly surprised with Barbie. I thought it might be the usual run of the mill silly kids movie, with a completely unserious/unrealistic storyline.

However, the Barbie storyline touched on a lot of serious real world issues and situations that many people can relate to. With that said, it did feel like a senseless musical at times, with unesscessary sing/dance scenes.

The essence of the film touches on the juxtaposition of what life would be like if women ruled the world (Barbie Land). And the real world we live in, which is male dominated. This was portrayed well, but did get abit too silly sometimes.

The level of acting from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, were both bang on. Considering they were playing dolls, they kept a great balance between having to act silly, whilst still keeping a level of seriousness, so the sillyness doesn't go overboard.

Overall, "Barbie" was actually a decent watch with a good level of comedy and realism, whilst keeping the essence of what Barbie represents.

Isit worth a watch?... Whether you are a woman or man, young or old. Barbie has a little bit for everyone to relate to. So for that reason it is worth a watch, but don't go in with high hopes unless you are a die hard Barbie fan!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is not 'man-hating' or 'propaganda, as a man who came up to me in the theatre claimed. This movie is about men accepting themselves and building relationships outside of women, and women accepting the pressure the patriacy puts onto us and still wanting to achieve more. Its not the movie that most, even me, were anticipating. The fun and satirical trailers don't truly reflect the meat of this movie but nevertheless it was fun. Not everything has to be so serious, at the end of the day its a MOVIE and not children are being brainwashed by it. However, the movie as a piece of cinema was rough. Its a little choppy and messy in places with world building that really lacks. Despite having a narrator they don't use her very efficiently, instead exposition is used which takes longer. I think if you have a narrator you should really use them. Things are not fleshed out as well as they should be, especially the mother and daughter relationship and how that grows, and I think if that was less of the focus the movie would benefit. The Barbie Movie struggles to focus on the fantastical world of barbie, and perhaps if it was a plot centred around that universe it would benefit. But objectively it is a fine movie with and incredible soundtrack and some impressive acting. As always, the fans and the fandom make anything great and the response the movie has gotten has gone beyond the plot. It shows both women and girls deep appreciation for a toy that transcends generations and captures the hearts and fashion of so many. Expand

A have the feeling that the people who are bashing it are afraid or dislikeful of the representations it contains. Wheter you like them or not, there is no denying that this is a deep and thoughtful movie. I give it a ten for being, as much as very fun and upbeating, so intentional and dutiful, competent and coherent on conveying a message of self-acceptance and self-knowledge/discovery for both women and men alike. It's a meaningful movie, even if you don't agree with some of the representations it has. It shouldn't be trashed for political or worldview divergences. This movie is, at it's most deep, human.

I don't think it should be carelessly shown to very young children though, because the subject of the plot it very, very dense. It's a bit hard to talk about death with too young children, so maybe PG-13 is in fact a good rating, but it's a mission-impossible to not take a 6yo to watch the latest and most Candy-colored Barbie movie ever!

I will definitely hold this one to my best regards, for it's such a meaningful and delightful movie. The crowd clapped all along and the vibe in the movies was awesome, with the real world barbies of all ages and shapes all colored in pink.

Mind-blowing cinematographic experience from start to finish.
Although some specific jokes and sections of the movie didn't hit the mark as they were expected to, this movie is filled with twisted satire, black humor, and a great direction and production, which combined with the incredible performances and the positive message it contains, makes "Barbie" a unique and unforgettable experience that will for sure get some conservative parents and their children out of the cinema.
I didn't expect it to be that incredible; congratulations to Greta and her team. I don't know how they let you release this sarcastic masterpiece, and I'd kill to read the original, uncensored script.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh, my goodness! Let me tell you, the Barbie Movie 2023 is an absolute burst of joy and positivity that left me feeling on cloud nine! From the moment the film started, I was enchanted by the magical world Greta Gerwig crafted on the screen. She brought her unique directorial flair, which perfectly complemented the heartwarming storyline.

Margot Robbie's portrayal of Barbie was nothing short of spectacular! She embodied the essence of Barbie with a radiant charm that made her character feel so relatable and endearing. Her ability to balance Barbie's iconic confidence with vulnerability was a true testament to her talent as an actress.

Ryan Gosling was a delightful surprise as Ken, adding an incredible dash of charm and humor to the movie. His chemistry with Margot Robbie was electric, and their on-screen romance was a sheer delight to watch. Gosling's impeccable comedic timing and charisma brought Ken to life in a way that made him more than just a plastic doll.

And can we talk about Issa Rae? Oh my goodness, she was the perfect choice for Skipper! Issa Rae's natural comedic prowess and infectious energy shone through, making Skipper a lovable and hilarious character. Her dynamic with Barbie and Ken brought an added layer of depth to the film's themes of friendship and self-discovery.

The visuals were absolutely stunning! The set designs, costume choices, and overall aesthetics transported me to a dreamlike world filled with vibrant colors and magical scenery. Every frame felt like a work of art, and I couldn't help but marvel at the attention to detail in capturing the essence of Barbie's iconic universe.

What made the Barbie Movie 2023 even more special was the empowering and heartfelt message it conveyed. The film beautifully embraced themes of self-acceptance, following your dreams, and the power of friendship. It was truly refreshing to see a movie that encouraged young audiences (and adults too!) to be themselves unapologetically.

The music was an absolute treat as well! The catchy tunes and captivating soundtrack added an extra layer of fun and enchantment to the overall experience. I found myself humming along and dancing in my seat throughout the entire film.

Overall, Greta Gerwig's direction, Margot Robbie's performance as Barbie, Ryan Gosling's charm as Ken, and Issa Rae's infectious energy as Skipper all came together in perfect harmony. The Barbie Movie 2023 is a magical, uplifting, and carefree cinematic experience that will leave you with a heart full of joy and a smile that won't fade for days. Whether you're a longtime Barbie fan or a newcomer to her world, this movie is an absolute must-see! It radiates positivity and proves that dreams really do come true!

It was fun, light, wacky, self aware, and introspective, and to do these things with such heart takes like a safecracker brand of light touch. I loved this film. And the worst and depressingly predictable thing is the immediate hate it is getting from people who either couldn't be bothered to think about the film's point because they don't feel they should have to in a movie about one of the most mass produced toys the world has ever seen, or they DID think about it, and it made them uncomfortable verging on enraged because this movie's villain is patriarchy, and they feel attacked as a result. The only complaint I have is that this is still the latest in a line of recent studio films that are basically long commercials celebrating consumerism masquerading as films. BUT I will forgive this one a bit; you could never adapt this script to get the film's point while avoiding the brand because Barbie's iconness as a product is part of her character. Which means I won't be running out to buy any new or vintage licensed Barbie merch for myself, but I will feel better about when I buy it for my family members and friends' kids for Christmas. Ok maybe one NWT Barbie tee off Poshmark or eBay for me. Or 5, we'll see what the prices with shipping look like... Expand

Expand

While Margot"The Barbra Movie," as intellectuals such as myself will be calling this film going forward, is an all-out explosive piece of satire with a powerful cast and important lessons that certain types of people maybe NEED to hear. While Margot Robbie was fantastic as Barbie, I feel like Ryan Gosling did most of the heavy lifting as Ken. Everyone else (especially Kate McKinnon) was excellent as the supporting cast and elevated the whole dynamic of the film.

The overall message of the film was not only impactful, but well executed. It didn’t feel forced, and not once did it feel like I was being preached to. A few of the jokes didn’t necessarily “land,” but most of the humor was clever and thoughtful. Some folks might feel that they’re not the “target audience” for this film but I say “fooey” and “pshaw” to that! Go and see this movie for a good time and a good laugh.

8/10, C’mon Barbies, let’s discover existentialism and have a few laughs along the way!

If you haven't followed it, there's this ridiculous internet debate over which film will reign supreme between Greta Gerwig's Barbie andWelcome back, Streamers! The most anticipated movie weekend of 2023 is here. It's Barbenheimer. If you haven't followed it, there's this ridiculous internet debate over which film will reign supreme between Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer...

In this corner, coming in at 11.5 inches, it's the iconic, blonde fashion doll, Barbie.

Barbie is the first live-action film about the American icon and her place in culture. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach wrote a screenplay, which Gerwig directs, that takes audiences into Barbieland, where we meet stereotypical Barbie (Marot Robbie) and her fellow Barbies living their perfect existences until one day stereotypical Barbie starts to think constantly about death, her feet become flat and other things are off. Barbie has to make a trek to the real world to find out why things have changed for her and to set them straight. Barbie is accompanied by Ken (Ryan Gosling), whose existence is so dependent upon Barbie that he only has a good day if Barbie looks at him. Rollerblading, hot pink singing and dancing hijinks ensue.

Overall, Barbie is a weird and wonderful movie. It is clear that a lot of thought and money went into creating this story and world inhabited by Barbie. You will be awed by the clever production design and the intense attention to detail that went into constructing Barbieland. The colors pop. There are cute animated touches throughout. Additionally, the costume design enhances each Barbie and Ken in interesting ways. You'll also notice the music throughout the film is sometimes poignant and sometimes hilarious, especially when it involves the Kens. From top to bottom, the crafts in this movie are top notch and worthy of a trip to the big screen.

The cast, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, are excellent. Robbie brings sensitivity and heart to Barbie. She's thoughtful and kind while also being naive and troubled by her own existence. It is a tricky performance to pull off and Robbie is great. Ken is an iconic performance for Gosling. He pulls out all of the stops to bring Ken to life. I can't imagine another actor being as successful in this role. Gosling is a really gifted comedic actor as evidenced by this performance. I'll also note that Kate McKinnon, American Ferrar, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera and Issa Rae each have good moments as well. It's a big cast, but some of the smaller roles do get chances to shine.

The main issue is that the messaging is so heavy-handed. There is a lot to unpack about Barbie's place in society. What does she represent to women and girls? What does she represent to men? There are themes of feminism, patriarchy, and corporate greed. The film does its best to address its issues in a clever and subversive way, but it veers into becoming patronizing at times rather than funny and satirical. The performances of the actors really carry the film across the finish line despite how it handles its themes.

Ultimately, Barbie is a movie worthy of a trip to the theater. It is funny and even clever at times. The messaging of the movie gets heavy-handed and some of the subversive fun is lost in those moments. Nevertheless, Gosling and Robbie fully commit to their characters as does the large ensemble; and the production design and music are top notch. You won't be disappointed with a big box of popcorn. You decide if you want to wear hot pink like everyone else.

The most thoroughly enjoyable movie experience I've had in a long time, laughed start to finish (and this is from a 20-something straight dude!)

Not a perfect movie, but it wasn't meant to be. Just all-round good fun.

It’s definitely a good time with lots of laughs, regardless of your stance on the doll. Where it falls a BIT short is that it tries to pack a LOT into under two hours, leading to some messages not hitting as hard as they could and some plot points that just don’t make sense or add up.

Plus some of the non-principle characters/scenes feel a bit monotone compared to their technicolor world, and the film relies a bit upon overused tropes to drive its humor. There were many moments where I kept telling myself that the joke I was hearing felt familiar, but perhaps that is because the marketing team practically left nothing to be surprised by at the movie’s release.

Overall, if you have even remote interest, see it! But if the trailers didn’t do it for you, the movie doesn’t have a whole lot more to offer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, what a delightful cinematic experience "Barbie" turned out to be! From the moment the film started, I was captivated by its charm, wit, and humor. Initially, I had some reservations about the potential overload of pink, but I must say, director Greta skillfully used colors to create a visually appealing and immersive world.

The interviews I saw with Greta, where she mentioned the 32 films that influenced "Barbie," had me a bit worried, especially knowing that some of those films didn't resonate with me. But thankfully, the final product had its own unique identity that resonated with my taste. The clever and enjoyable dialogue had me bursting out in genuine laughter throughout the entire screening – it felt like I was sharing the experience with the characters.

Now, let's talk about the cast – Margot Robbie was an absolute perfect choice for the stereotypical Barbie. She effortlessly embodied the iconic image that we all have of the beloved doll. And Ryan Gosling as Ken was just brilliant! His portrayal of the clueless and slightly silly Ken was spot-on, just as I had always imagined the character to be. The intelligence and physicality he brought to the role were truly commendable.

"Barbie" managed to strike the right balance between nostalgia and freshness, making it an enjoyable watch for both fans of the classic doll and new audiences. The film's clever writing, charismatic performances, and eye-catching visuals came together to create a captivating and entertaining experience.

I must admit, I went into the cinema with some hesitation, but I came out feeling pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained. "Barbie" is a film that will leave you with a big smile on your face, and I highly recommend giving it a watch. Kudos to the entire team for crafting such a delightful and intelligent movie!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Felt like I paid to watch a two hour ad. While the movie is often funny and clever, it was overall disappointing.

Hollow overtures to feminism, overt misandry, and forced diversity were used to clean up Mattel's image and please the uncritical mainstream audience. While graphics were appealing, Barbies character itself is poorly developed & the storyline is incoherent… The story could not be resolved without Greta literally preaching her message at the end.

The movie could have been about feminism and equality, instead, however, it promotes matriarchy as solution to patriarchy. “Barbie” is reinforcing the problem. The movie touches on several interesting themes but never explores them which feels like wasted potential.

- The Mother-Daughter relationship. The daughter is disconnected with her mother and acts hostilely at school. You thought the movie will revolve about fixing that problem? No. The daughter has no problem. She's just a teenager.
- Thinking about death: The mother misses playing with her daughter and starts designing sad or “weird” Barbies. How does that relate to Barbie thinking about death specifically?
- The corporate: The corporate people who are all men try to catch Barbie so they can send her back to Barbieland. But when Barbie went to Barbieland they still followed her. It took them too long to get there for no apparent reason. And when they got there it just gets very confusing. Why are they in there?
- Barbie wanting to be human: A theme that starts with Barbie‘s interaction with an old lady and her observing other people. That motive disappears completely until the end, Barbie has no motivation to become human throughout the movie.
- Kens: The Movie tries to make Ken the bad guy even though he was just trying to be noticed and loved (woman good man bad mentality). You’d expect Ken has any meaningful development after the downfall of Kendom but he remains Barbie’s accessory.

This year's or maybe all time? most controversial film is here. It is highest degree of modern third wave feminist fantasy, in other words, it has pretty much nothing to do with actual reality.

The way men are treated in this movie, is absolutely horrible and that's the only realistic part in this movie. Because men are treated horribly in real world as well. I have seen so many reviewers point out how this movie shows how badly women were treated and are treated right now. Yeah, i guess that's why men's suicide rate has been sky-high past 10 years. But i guess if you are rich or semi rich woman who lives in gate-protected LA neighborhoods, no wonder you don't know ANYTHING about real world.

This movie had most misleading marketing of all time. Yes, i mean it. Out of all movies ever made, this one takes the prize. They got so many young people hyped to watch fun-happy-go-lucky summer movie. Instead they got another feminist lecture and of course feminists in their 30s and 40s LOVE it.

It's sad reality that thanks to this marketing, it will have very strong opening weekend, easily over 100 million. One can just hope that after first weekend it drops off and most importantly, will be just forgotten.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: it is nostalgic to all people who played Barbie as children (in a good way); it's funny; it interestingly describes the problem of growing up, mother/daughter relationships (Barbie/her creator and Mum/daughter from the real world); it shows how difficult is to be a woman sometimes (and for my nation (I'm from one of European countries) all she said was a sad truth; if in USA it's otherwise, skip this point); it's bright and well-choreographed; I'm not a specialist, but the actors' work was also great. Ken was a good antagonist who made me hate him (not because he's a man, but because his character was envious, rude and used his power to make other people suffer; if you imagine in his place some mad female scientist, nothing will change), Barbie showed relatable emotions.
Cons: some amount of dirty jokes, Mattel's team didn't have any plot behind them (like, they were funny, but didn't have any actual purpose), several story arcs weren't finished.
Speaking about offensive ideas - the description of patriarchy served mostly for comedy purposes. No one considered the Idiocracy offensive towards silly or clever people, I hope, as well as Scary movie towards ghosts.

It felt like they were going on a story, especially one that would end up with big problems in the future. I will continue to watch an average movie when the analogies made on the internet seem to confirm my suspicions. But Barbie is hiding with a pretty well-written script. He uses drama in the parts that should be serious, and humor in the parts. From that moment on, the script can be both preserved and conveyed to the audience much better. Moreover, when the editing is at a fluent pace, you watch the movie breathlessly. The fact that its duration is under two hours is also nice considering the length of mainstream movies in recent years. Expand

I knew going into this film that it was going to try to push a message. I believe this is where the film untimately fails. A good film can convey its message through creative story telling. Barbie instead decides to have the characters in the film directly tell you multiple times. Its almost like the writer of the film does not think people are intelligent enough to comprehend it otherwise. I award this film 3 points though because the sets and costumes are extremely well designed. In addition Ryan Gosling does an excellent job portraying Ken even with a terrible script. The music is also excellent. Expand

I'd been looking forward to this movie for months, and I couldn't be more disappointed. I don't think I've been so miserable after a viewing...perhaps ever, honestly.

Barbie is supposed to be about empowering girls and women, and I was expecting some sort of heartwarming story about just that. But instead what we got was a confusing slog full of confusing and predictable, unintelligent soap-boxing, and very little empowerment.

By the end it seemed like every second line was related to how terrible men are, or how terrible it is to be a woman. The "climactic monologue" delivered by the human mother was beyond depressing, and it didn't help that in order to "deprogram" the Barbies, the mother would share some self-degrading "insight" about - you guessed it - the eternal and inherent suffrage and despair of womanhood. As a young woman (presumably the prime target for this movie) I felt actively disempowered by the film and its trite, not-so-feminist message. My friends and I left the theatre feeling miserable.

Speaking of, it's really disingenuous that a lot of the people defending this film are trying to suggest that the only people who didn't like it are angry men who hate womens' empowerment when the movie tried as hard as it could to degrade all of us.

If you want to watch a feel-good Barbie film about women kicking a** not at the expense of men, watch The Diamond Castle instead.

I hope Chevrolet gets their sales up too because that product placement couldn't have been more in-your-face if they'd tried. Every car was a Chevy, and all the car scenes were shot as if it was a car commercial. That alone was funnier than half the jokes.

As a long-time fan of the Barbie franchise, I'mIn conclusion, Barbie Movie is an absolute flop. With its lack of originality, weak characters, subpar animation, and unremarkable music, it fails to deliver anything of value to its audience. As a long-time fan of the Barbie franchise, I'm deeply disappointed and can't recommend this movie to anyone, even the most die-hard Barbie enthusiasts. Save your time and money, and find something more deserving of your attention.

Where do I even begin with this disaster of a movie? As an avid moviegoer, I was excited to see what Barbie Movie had to offer, hoping for a delightful and entertaining experience. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a painful 90 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.

The characters were shallow and one-dimensional, lacking any depth or development. Barbie herself was nothing more than a pretty face with zero personality or relatability. The sidekicks were equally uninspired, relying on outdated stereotypes and recycled jokes that fell flat every time. I couldn't muster up any sympathy or interest in their plights.

Moreover, the voice acting was lackluster, adding to the overall feeling of mediocrity. The voices didn't match the characters' personalities, making it difficult to connect with them emotionally. It felt like the actors were just phoning it in and collecting a paycheck without caring about the final product.

As for the music, it was forgettable at best and annoying at worst. The songs were generic, with lyrics that seemed like they were written in five minutes. Not a single tune stuck with me after leaving the theater, and I couldn't help but wonder why they didn't invest in better songwriting and composition.

In addition to all the above, the message conveyed throughout the film was shallow and borderline problematic. Barbie's sole focus was on her appearance and finding love, perpetuating outdated stereotypes that young audiences shouldn't be exposed to in this day and age. It's disheartening to see a character that could be a role model for young girls reduced to such superficial themes.

Margot Robbies performance as Barbie was one of the better parts of the movie, and the initial parts of the movie make sense and are quite fun, it turns into a gloaty 2-hour monologue about social issues and the word patriarchy is said at least 30 times. The snob at corporate hypocrisy is probably the best part of the movie. A majority of the positive reviews praise it for its amazing cinematography, set design, costumes, and individual performances, but it is severely lacking in the story department. This doesn't save it from having a poorly constructed plot that seems to be falling back onto itself every time something makes sense. Its like trying to understand whats going on in the movie Tenet, except it isn't on purpose.
This movie had great potential, great acting, and almost everything that it needed to be a real "great" movie, but its stuck up nature and constant self hatred make it mediocre at best. Its a shame because some of Greta Gerwig's movies like Little Women and Lady Bird convey themes of self discovery and portray powerful women without having to force it.

Possibly the worst movie I've ever seen.

I don't say that lightly, from start to finish the movie is terrible, the movie startes with barbie living in barbieland and Ken being basically a slave, she finishes the movie by liberating barbieland and Ken returning to being a slave. I wouldn't have minded, if something happened between the start and finish, but nothing did, the movie had nothing to it, terrible cgi, no storyline and I will never get those 2 hours of my life back.

I went to see this after oppenheimer, which showed even more how bad barbie was. After watching this fast and furious 9 is Oscar worthy, that's how bad this film is, I would never recommend this to anyone, and I will never watch it again.

Warning: This movie is a box office trap - do not waste your money. It's the first movie I've ever had to walk out of the theater on halfway through. Below I'll explain why, in depth (no spoilers):

I'll start with the positives:
- Great costume and set design, providing a distinctly bright, technicolor visual style
- Good acting from the male and female leads, Margo and Ryan
- Some quality camerawork
- Some may enjoy the self-aware, breaking the fourth wall, Deadpool-esque comedy, but the jokes are hit-and-miss, mostly low-brow, and seem an attempt to distract from the films shortcomings: lack of plot.
- Die-hard Barbie fans will likely want to go to see it simply because it is now a part of the Barbie Universe, but will likely leave feeling betrayed and that the Barbie brand has been defiled.

Now the negatives:
- Plot and characters are very weak, the empty narrative and fabulous set design serves simply as a Technicolor vessel for delivering it's political diatribe, and not much more.
-It is a trojan horse. The trailers were intentionally vague and nobody I met had any idea what the movie was about heading into it. This is on purpose- the movie is not a lighthearted, fun, summer comedy many expected. If people knew, they would not go.
- This movie is NOT for children - not only will the creators' radical views go way over their heads, it is simply not interesting, fun, nor is the comedy or messaging child-friendly.
- This movie is NOT for Barbie fans: I've experienced many Barbie fans walk away furious, as it does not represent the empowerment and message if equality, striving, and opportunity that Barbie represented to them, in fact it crushes that. The movie is an extended radical feminist diatribe, packaged within the guise of a fun summer blockbuster, maximizing both profits and political reach. Hollywood is very liberal- I get that, and am middle-of-the-road on the political spectrum, not right-wing or conservative by any means- and I respect many of its creations and nuanced political commentaries, but...
- This is not that. This is not nuanced, it is not subtle. The movie treats its audience as unintelligent, and half of the movie consists of very direct, radical feminist speeches, "preaching" their message down to the uniformed audience. Not just once, but numerous times. Even if I disagreed on the views, I would give credit to a movie that delivers it's message impactfully, in a nuanced way, or with deft creative craftsmanship. This is not that, not even close. It is so on the nose it becomes cringe, more and more as the movie goes on.
- The views it broadcasts are dangerous as well, particularly to the children and youth you would think are the target demographic: anti-white, anti-male, anti-homemaker, and the movie goes so far as to disrespect women who choose to get pregnant and have children. It does not share a message of equality for all, but rather revenge, subjugation, and disrespect of men. If you agree with those sentiments you will likely enjoy this film, even if it presents them in such a low-brow, in-your-face way, that requires no real thinking on the audience's part. Therein lies the target audience.
- This movie provides a no-thought-required circle-jerk for it's target audience: re-affirming the views of the more radical breed of social justice warriors, at the expense (literal expense, given the droves arriving in theaters and emptying their wallets due to social media advertising) of Barbie fans, the Barbie brand, and the rest of its unsuspecting audience.
- Spend your money this week to see Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Mission Impossible, Oppenheimer, Spiderman, or basically any other film that's playing now, as they are all better worth your time, and money.

I just wanted to say, that not all women are bad, just sad that movies like this make normal women look bad. Expand

This is an inadequate movie that doesn’t belong in the Barbie universe!

I said it, I don’t like it, but I wanted to. As a collector I really thought I’d love this movie and I did at the start, the dance choreography- the music and Gloria’s speech! But the rest just isn’t it. Margot’s character of Stereotypical Barbie or the what I understand to be original Barbie is grappling with a crisis of identity that is not resolved. Barbie is under the impression that they “fixed” the real world as she believes it’s like Barbie land where all the Barbies have the high-powered jobs and run Barbie land. When she arrives in the real world she is upset that’s not how it is. Instead of equality and true feminism this movie pushes the idea that only women or men can be in charge. In Barbie Land all the Ken’s don’t have proper or high power jobs. Ryan’s Ken character is just BEACH Ken, now if we were sticking to an actual representation of Barbie Land we would also have a BEACH barbie just like we have Crystal Barbie and Ken or Great Shape Barbie and Ken or even Animal Lovin Barbie and Ken! This perception that Ken doesn’t have a REAL job is just untrue, in fact there is many Ken Careers including DOCTOR KEN!

This movie had a lot of potential but fell flat, it would have been more meaningful if Barbie realised that Barbie Land and the real world that in fact neither were perfect and that the Ken’s also had the right to have a say and have a voice equally as the women in the real world should too! The REAL Barbie stands for equality and women empowerment not to tear down the opposite sex and oppress them. This story line doesn’t even fit with the Barbie world Mattel has created as I mentioned Ken does in fact have Careers.

As for their relationship;
Ken has always been his own man and Barbie her own woman together an aspirational couple who don’t diminish the other. But the Barbie Movie is far from the Barbie and Ken we know and love.

The Ken’s in Barbie land do not feel respected and are in shock when they learn that BEACH Ken was asked for the time in the Real world, Ryan’s Ken telling them how he was respected by this action. I’m sorry but what?! Since when has Ken been treated so poorly. I’m sorry but I grew up with Ken being the perfect boyfriend/ date. Some even say they have found their Ken when finding the man of their dreams. So why has any respect for Ken gone out the window? Barbie is self-centred and rude telling Ken he can go now at the end of the night. And constantly throughout Barbie is saying she see’s Ken as a friend…. I’m sorry but no. This is a movie about tearing down Barbie and Tearing down Ken both separately and together as a couple. They both are having an identity crisis with no satisfactory outcome!

Stereotypical Barbie is basically killed off and turns human and the Ken’s are still treated like they have no worth. Barbie and Ken are broken up? Or were never a thing really to begin with in Barbies eyes. I’m sorry but this is not Barbie and Ken’s Story. Although the movie touches on Barbie having an identity crisis and self confidence as we women do. This is due to the human playing with her I feel that Barbie should have overcome this or start working through this after hearing Americas Characters speech. This movie is for the people who just want to see a Barbiecore movie that doesn’t have a real connection in the Barbie universe! Mattel should not of given this their stamp of approval it sure is not swell.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NOT A FILM FOR CHILDREN! Some funny banter and scenes, but it's impossible to review because I do not know what I feel when watching it.

I am split between the good and bad, and there is a lot of bad.
A faux feminism film which perverts the truth in reality to try and make this crap about a fight against the Patriarchy, while Barbieland is a full fledged Matriarchy which keeps the male dolls down, and the only way to hold any status is to transition yourself to female (i.e: specifically the Doctor Barbie) which is a blatant form of misogyny on it's own.

After Barbie comes back to Barbieland/Kendom she struggles with not knowing where she fits in, because she doesn't fit in. She has no ambitions, no job, does nothing of substance throughout the film, and does not treat Ken as an equal partner.

How is that feminism?

Kendom's revolution was squashed because there is no violence in the film (besides the butt slap & the girls destroying their old dolls) and if you want a real democracy to flourish, let alone sustain a Kendom revolution - weapons are likely needed.

"Revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way." - Malcolm X

Then the Matriarchy is restored, and the Kens ask to have some say with society going forward and are rejected.

Therefore it deserves a 5, and that's generous.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a shame because I love Little Women and Lady Bird. Barbie did not serve.
It's a long ramble about how matriarchy is perfect and patriarchy is stupid. I'm agreeing with the latter, but the execution is just awful. The CEO and corporate people of Mattel started as a mock on men having all the top positions in a company, as the movie goes they're just there at the back of your mind and it's unpleasant experience because they did not do anything after. So many unnecessary scenes that could've been meaningful. For example, what's the scene Allan fighting other Kens for? I'm also surprised that there are no gay Barbies and Kens. I thought this was supposed to break the gender norms? There are so many seeds planted at once but none of them grew into their fullest potential. Here are some examples:

1. The mother and daughter relationship: It started well, the daughter is disconnected with her mother. You thought the movie will revolve about fixing that problem? No. The daughter has no problem. She's just a teenager.

2. Mother's longing for her daughter: The reason why barbie became curious about death is because the mother is playing with her barbie *differently*. She's drawing *weird* (sigh) Barbies. You thought it was because she had a rough childhood and now is the time to heal her inner child? No, she misses her time playing with her daughter. While it is an alright backstory, I see no reason how it is related to Barbie getting curious on death. 3. Patriarchy: It's always shown that patriarchy is for stupid men and their horses. The corporate people who are all men tries to catch Barbie so they can send her back to Barbieland. But barbie went to Barbieland and they STILL FOLLOWED HER. It took them too long to get there for no apparent reason. And when they got there it just gets very confusing. Why are they in there? Oh, it's because men are stupid? No, I'm not gonna laugh anymore. 4. Barbie wanting to be human: This should've been the theme of the movie. The point of the movie should've been about what Barbie saw to make her realize she wants to be human. But no, it was only a few minutes when she's seeing people laughing and some people are sad. After that, there was no more of it. They tried to push this in the ending but it just doesn't feel right because of the lack of motivation. Although it was expected. They wasted the whole time with cameos and other meaningless scenes.

I am disappointed in this movie. It's not worth the hype. It's incoherent. I really tried to make sense of the scenes I saw. If you want to see sisterhood, watch Mean Girls instead. At least in that movie they found sisterhood by letting each one of them know their worth, not by *unbrainwashing* them by a method very similar to brainwashing. They also did some weird things in Barbie like they manipulated the Kens by cheating on them. Men are stupid and it's the girls doing it so it's okay, I guess.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is it just me? This was a terrible movie. This movie is definitely for PG13&^ children wouldn’t have a clue what they’re watching. It just didn’t make scene there was so much going on that didn’t have closure. My perspective I think it starts out okay, about women empowerment, feminism, a Barbie can be everything and anything a doctor a lawyer etc but then it gets dark, inequalities that women face, mother roles and responsibilities, getting older, Male& female roles how men can quickly hold authority and power, Barbie becomes depressed because she doesn’t feel pretty anymore bc she’s not the STEREOTYPICAL Barbie bc the person playing with her is depressed and draws cellulite pictures of her (which is an older women in her late 30s) so Barbie get cellulite and in Barbie land that’s a malfunction and you’re considered “weird”she starts thinking about death and becomes depressed, she loses her confidence and at the end she doesn’t even want to be Barbie anymore she wants to be human and goes to see her GYN .. what?? .. Maybe I pay too much attention to details and the meaning behind each thing. But she doesn’t stay Barbie because childhood isn’t meant to be forever only in barbie land which doesn’t exist anymore / because we become older and aware exposed to the real world such as emotions “depression, crying” therefore destroyed and then we die .. I wouldn’t watch it again .. and tell me why 1 doll is gay but he can’t be a Ken He is “just Alan” and being pregnant is unexceptional bc Mattel will discontinue that kind of Barbie .. terrible movie Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a letdown and disappointment this movie turned out to be. I had made a promise to watch it with my wife, approaching it with an open mind and no prior knowledge of reviews or the plot. I wanted a fresh perspective, but unfortunately, my experience was disheartening, and I feel compelled to share it to help others avoid a similar fate.
The Barbie Movie attempts to challenge traditional values and women's roles in society, viewing our present world through the lens of oppressors and the oppressed. It starts with scenes of girls playing with old-fashioned dolls, mimicking motherly duties, and feeling down. Suddenly, a giant 20-foot Margot Robbie Barbie emerges, symbolizing a new era of feminism and expressive individualism. The film's central theme revolves around women seeking positions of power and influence, challenging corrupt and inept men.
The movie presents an idealistic world where all Barbies possess power and influence, while men are portrayed as mere admirers and worshippers of Barbies. This Barbie-centric world is set in contrast to our "current world" controlled by the "patriarchy." The intention of Barbie World is to promote a balance of power and influence, encouraging women to pursue careers like doctors, lawyers, and even president. While the message is empowering and uplifting, it simultaneously ridicules men, portraying them as baffling and incompetent buffoons, while undermining the significance of motherhood.Throughout the film, they awkwardly mention multiple times that the pregnant Barbie is a discontinued model, seemingly going against feminist ideals. In the end, Barbie decides to transcend her mere conceptual existence and takes action to become a human to influence the power structure in favor of women. The final scene shows Barbie at a gynecologist's appointment, where true freedom is depicted as the freedom to do with her body as she wishes. In summary, the movie conveys "the message" in a woke fashion, promoting the modern self while deconstructing the image of men and motherhood.
