I fell asleep twice in the movie. If Barbies were not part of your world growing up, you have nothing to relate to. The last 30 minutes turned into a sermon. Though shall believe this!!! After all the hype I felt ripped off afterwards.

Barbie

Dazzling, heartfelt and brilliantly funny. Comedy of the year, movie of the summer!

Barbie is a beautiful blend of comedy and heart. Aided deftly by colourful visuals, Greta Gerwig tells the story of a doll coming to life, with as much intellect and emotion that's needed.

Barbie is unabashedly feminist, will ruffle some feathers (as it should), and will delight even more people. Themes of existentialism, individualism and masculinity are also dealt with.

Despite being a product of Mattel, Greta found a way to critique the parent company (although it's funny that the product that mocks the maker ends up raking in more money for the maker).

Margot Robbie is Barbie! She was an agreeable canvas, and she allowed Greta Gerwig to paint a very nuanced portrayal of Barbie. Ryan Gosling turns out a career-best performance in Barbie, stealing and shining in all of his scenes. The supporting cast also gives great performances.

The soundtrack was fitting, guiding the movie down to the finish line with Billie Eilish's 'What was I made for' delivering a wonderful culmination. The set design and costumes were brilliant too.

The lore of Barbie spans over six decades, so compressing it all into one movie was a definite challenge, but Greta was able to bring the most important things (including Easter eggs and fan service) to the movie.

Barbie does have its failings, and the most noticeable is the plot. The first half is very intriguing, quirky and pays homage to other movies, but the second half isn't as tight.

Barbie isn't perfect but it's a beautiful dose of everything good.

The sets are well done.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling acting is outstanding.
The story depicts the distopia of a Feminist society.
1) In Barbieland men and women do not have genital. Women are indifferent to men. Men pander to women. Women control society. (Very Unnatural and clearly a Feminist dream).
2) In the real world men who do have genital are aggressively misogynistic.
3) Capitalism (that is freedom, liberty) is a metaphor for evil.
4) In Kendom, with men and women happy in traditional roles, the women are depicted as brainwashed.
5) Girls and women are discouraged from being mothers.
6) A real woman has a vagina, which is odd since real women for Feminists can have penises or vaginas.
The movie promotes unnatural social engineering in competition with the Soviet Union and National Socialism.
A very Postmodern Frankfurt School production.
Disgusting and dangerous.

Let's just say they use the word patriarchy about 100 times and curse words and talk multiple times about genitalia...this is not a family movie for kids, which it clearly should have been. Don't take your kids if you do go. It is sad to see this film do so well simply based upon the brand name which is being disgraced by this film. I am so tired of all this. No more theater going for my family. It just isn't worth this frustration every time. I don't care how charismatic the actors are or the work put into the sets--which was considerable and noteworthy. Not going to lie, I laugh considerably.

Watching it was fun 'cause I was curious to know how they would approach this world. Barbieland nails it with great visual identity, the cast was amazing and the plot serves to the point they wanted to make. Now, about the points...

I felt provoked sometimes in this movie and I consider it good, since questioning yourself is healthy sometimes. Some points were understandable and fun. Unpredictables and predictables. A little of everything, but most positive. My problem with this movie is how coarse it is about telling us its message. There is no problem about being a feminist drive movie, but when the director tells us about it openly (in an interview), saying "It most certainly is a feminist film" and the script throws his messages at us with huge exposure, that make the art itself one-dimensional.

I love to interpret scenes, characters, and the plot as a whole. But when the start point is already painted, It feels more like a lecture than anything else. There is no point in rewatching it when the point is as explicit as it is. I understand that's the director's objective, but I have the right to dislike it the way it is.

Fortunately, the movie is fun anyway. Margot Robbie is amazing, but not gonna lie, Ryan Gosling stole the thunder when he is in. The battle on the beach was the best moment, Alan is crazy and some takes are good anyway.

Also in Barbieland are the Kens (Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa…) and Allen, (a.k.a. Ken’s Buddy a.k.a. Michael Cera). Every day is perfect in Barbieland and “Barbie has a great day everyday” but soon Barbie begins to have an existential crisis and things aren’t so perfect for her anymore as she begins to question her world and existence.

Barbie is for all the women who played with Barbie dolls, for all the women who love everything pink and wonderful and for all the women who have a “weird, dark and crazy side.” Barbie is for everyone. I wouldn’t have guessed that one of the standout movies of the year would be about a Barbie doll but this is more than a movie about a piece of plastic with great hair. It’s a movie dealing with deeper issues like self-esteem, impossible beauty standards, identity and the unrealistic expectations put on women. It had so much more depth to it than I ever would have expected. It’s not afraid to make fun of itself but without turning Barbie into a joke. Seriously if you go into Barbie expecting to hate it then congratulations you’re going to hate it. I personally don’t love everything pink and wonderful but I really enjoyed Barbie and you don’t have to be Barbie obsessed to like it.

If there was ever a clear cut case of an actor born to play a role it’s Margot Robbie as Barbie. She absolutely killed it. She was able to portray the “stereotypical Barbie” and “existential crisis Barbie” to perfection and no one else could have gave that performance as well as Margot. Ryan Gosling is channelling his inner kenergy to tap into this role and you were more than kenough Ryan you were absolutely perfect. Fair play to Greta Gerwig for turning what could have been a giant advertisement for Mattel into a terrific and fun movie with a great message. America Ferrera’s speech about what it means to be a woman will go down as one of cinema’s greatest movie monologues. She stole the show with that one scene alone and was met with cheers in the cinema.

The attention to detail with all the sets in Barbieland are brilliant, the dance sequences were expertly choreographed, Helen Mirren was excellent as the narrator and arguably got the best joke in the whole movie. I’ve no words to describe the “I’m Just Ken” song, it’s a cinematic event that will probably never be repeated. Ryan Gosling has reminded us all how great at comedy roles he is, and I don’t believe any other actor could have pulled that off.

It’s pink, fluffy, silly and sure it’s a little cringey at times but sure that’s to be expected. It found the balance between goofy humour and heart. It will speak to so many people and looking at the sold out movie screens more than two weeks after it’s opening date we can expect Barbie to reel in the profits. Warner Bros wouldn’t be rolling in the money if it wasn’t for the writers, the actors and all those behind the scenes who brought Barbie to the big screen in a creative and fun way. The marketing team also outdid themselves this time and this collective effort and hard work has paid off.

The success of Barbie has inevitably led to Mattel launching their own cinematic universe based on a variety of different toys. Unfortunately they’ve most likely missed the point as to why Barbie has been so successful and resonated with so many people. Unless they get proper filmmakers to each take one of these movies and think outside the box then they are setting themselves up for failure. Cinema audiences don’t want more toy based movies, because Barbie is more than just a movie about a doll, they really did come up with an ingenious, bizarre and sublime way to make Barbie.

Barbie definitely exceeded my expectations and is just a delightfully good time at the cinema. For many cinemas the last two weeks have been the most successful weekends in years due to Barbie and Oppenheimer. Real filmmakers making real movies outside of franchises and remakes. If you haven’t seen either of these films yet then what are you waiting for and if you’ve already seen both then congratulations movie buffs for completing Barbenheimer.

But, I can tell you that it's really just a movie for grown women, not men, and not kids either. Also, anyone who tries to tell you there is no messaging and agenda stuff here is lying out their *ss. Weirdly though, it just made me for sorry for the people trying say whatever they were trying to say there, rather than the anger I was feeling at the idea of it when I learned about it before watching the film. There's something really just immature about the ability of the writers and filmmakers way of going about it that just made me feel sorry for them and their lack of ability to communicate properly. It's no wonder they're so angry and bitter and have to really be on the nose with the stuff they want to say, because I don't think they actually know how else to be. And, like I said, that's just sad. I'm surprised to say that I think the men making movies in general, despite what you might have been told about men, are actually better at honestly and maturely interpreting and understanding the world around them and then communicating real thoughts and feeling openly and authentically than the women who wrote and made this movie who are mostly just venting like an angry teenager at a parent or something. :-o Expand

Just ignore it, it's just another Ghostbusters 2016 and will be forgotten by September. Radical feminists desperately want people to get triggered by it, so imo best solution is just ignoring it. After all it's not well made movie anyway, so it simply doesn't matter. Of course it will affect Margot Robbie's and possibly other actors career. Pretty sure they lost a lot of fans, just by being part of this movie. But at the end of the day, it was their choice to be in this movie, so who cares. Literally same thing happened with Ghostbusters cast, they hardly got any roles after that movie. Ultimately, it's their choice and if they want to lose fans, good for them. Expand

Writer-director Greta Gerwig’s latest offering, co-written with collaborator Noah Baumbach, features a dreadful script that’s about as subtle as a young adult novel, drones on and on and on for about 30 minutes longer than it needs to be, becomes endlessly repetitive, and incorporates story threads that could have easily been scaled back or eliminated entirely (such as those with Will Ferrell and Michael Cera). What’s more, much of the dialogue is either stupefyingly juvenile or sounds more like “writing” than anything anyone would actually say (even for a fictional fantasy character), with attempts at humor that often fall woefully flat. And, to be honest, for all intents and purposes, the project comes across like a two-hour commercial for Mattel (even if the company manages to find ways to poke fun at itself). To its credit, “Barbie” does have a few strengths going for it, such as its superb production design, some genuinely clever humor (especially its opening pre-titles sequence and occasional asides), and fine performances by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (who manage to make this material look better than it actually is), as well as a heartwarming appearance by Rhea Perlman. Beyond that, though, this is handily the most overrated, overhyped release of the summer movie season, one that I’ll easily forget before year’s end – and one that conclusively proves the power of marketing, no matter what the quality of the merchandise being promoted. Yes it’s PG-13 but the marketing campaign for this mf was geared toward “EVERYONE” as they said. I’m not surprised. Of course these godless Hollywood elites would try to dismantle our society by deceitfully hiding and pushing their misandrist immoral/anti-American ideology propaganda through children’s films. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought the Barbie movie did a great job of portraying the issues women deal with but made men seem like an invasive pest that lacked redeeming qualities or complexity. If the story was about real life experiences then both sides should have been taken as seriously. I mean that would be truthful? I am by no means a conservative or political person. And honestly, I can't believe I'm actually writing a post defending men. But if I am being completely honest, an injustice is an injustice and i felt that this film was quite unjust towards a whole gender & sex. I just felt like this film was generalizing men as the worst of the stereotypes a lot of men try to break free from or have been harmed by. I understand the film was trying to suggest that it's this culture that's the problem, but they did that by using every male character in the entire film to portray all of men in a very lighthearted mockery while offering no real perspective on why this culture exists or why men are sexist. They just all were. Except Allan, but he didn't have any heroic qualities and was kinda abused/taken advantage of by the women. Most of these scenes were indeed funny, I laughed a lot, but at it's core it was really lacking a realistic understanding of what men actually deal with or what men actually do. It didn't offer a realistic solution for toxic men through any representation of what a healthy masculine figure looks like. Everything was real for the woman's perspective and everything was comedically disparaging for the men's perspective. Only women were real in this film; and that's kind of an issue for feminism if they want to be taken seriously by everyone. It's problematic to have a very carefully constructed, nuanced and empathetic view of one group of people but a negative if not shameful portrayal of another group of people. To say that it all ends peacefully because they let the "Kens" back in but only on their terms is pretty weak when you are judging a whole sex the entirety of the film and then the only scene where Ken has a single introspective thought is a comedic routine. Its kinda thrown in there to seemingly justify all the hatred.
I understand that this is a Barbie movie and is made for girls, but that doesn't really mean that what the film was suggesting was justified or authentic to the whole of the human condition. It was a pretty universally advertised film, it seemed more like a young adult-adult comedy than a kids film, at least thats how it was advertised. Even if it was only made for girls, I don't see this film bridging the gap between men and women by showing the human traits we share rather than the division between us.
Yes, I completely agree that there is a huge amount of toxic culture men need to do away with but feminism is about equality. There could have been a message about breaking gender stereotypes and uplifting both men and women away from these hateful ideologies; in a world where we don't have to put each other down or adhere to "an eye for an eye". That would be a message that upholds what equality is meant to mean.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It starts first with a narration about how before the advent of the Barbie, most Victorian girls were catered into a motherly role due to only having baby dolls to take care for and not a womanly figure that those girls could relate to with jobs once just for the man. That's where we're then shown Barbieland, and the ultimate beach bum that's Ken while Barbie lives out her perfect life where every night is a girl's night. Until she starts to have strange thoughts of death, which manifest into her becoming more like a real person rather than a plastic doll; she's told she has to visit the "Weird Barbie" where she's told that she has to find the girl playing with her to figure out her family situation better (a plot so far reminiscent of Ursula from the Little Mermaid, especially with the P1NK look from being roughhoused by a careless toddler). Ken ends up sneaking for the ride and we're just seen how 'slobby' our society is, dudes getting all zany and catcalling before one slaps her ass then they get indicted after she hits him back. After all that, she meets the daughter of who proceeds to call her a 'fascist' and mention how 'she set the feminist movement back 50 years', all the while Barbieland is being transformed into a 'Kendom' as Barbie's Dreamhouse is now 'Ken's MoJo DoJo Casa House' with every southern country depiction possible complete with horses. We only witness the unfolding of after the mother overhears the Matel executive board and finds her real life Barbie, who offers to bring her back to her perfectly matriarchal life. After an empowering speech about women's rights, they proceed to formulate a plan that involves individually telling the speech to each Barbie after they're separated by their Ken's and gaslighting them into having their hayday until acting upon their insecure egos in order to break their patriarchy apart. Overall, a movie that comes off strongly like the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters; during which year, it was reviewed as being "stunning and brave" with the same misandry-esque storytelling (that time, replacing an all-male cast mind you). The movie, led by Margot Robbie, falls significantly short in character and plot development, focusing instead on a series of forced humour and moral grandstanding. This supposed self-aware take on the iconic doll's narrative appears more smug than insightful. The large ensemble of characters ends up feeling frustratingly interchangeable, diluting any attempt to present unique personalities.

While the art direction and visual design stand out, they are largely overshadowed by the film's inability to fully capitalise on the quirky and interesting concept of 'Barbie Land'. Instead, the movie chooses to spend more time in real-world settings that unfortunately offer little contrast or comedic value.

At its core, "Barbie" feels like a film made for the social media age - visually appealing, yet ultimately empty in content and purpose. Its primary appeal, it would seem, lies more in the experience of the pre-release hype and the resulting social media buzz than the movie itself. A missed opportunity indeed.

A masterpiece of feminist satire that touches the soul.

"Barbie" is a skilfully constructed film that evokes a wide range of emotions: from sincere laughter to bitter tears. It immerses the viewer in a wonderful world and is a shining example of how to shoot pictures for the modern generation with a fast pace of life. The editing of the scenes will satisfy even clip-minded viewers. During the time I watched this film, I didn't have time to notice how quickly it was over.

At the centre of the story is plastic culture icon Barbie, a shining example of the versatility of female art. Gerwig skilfully reveals her as a symbol of feminism while also highlighting her outdated traits. Ken, the embodiment of patriarchal ideals, is funny yet touching in showing how patriarchy affects men, and he feels rejected in Barbieland but accepted in the real world.

The script for this film is a real find. Full of hilarious moments and lines. Personally, I experienced a huge range of emotions that I haven't felt in a long time, from genuine laughter to tears. Credit to the actors, and in particular Ryan Gosling, who can safely be called the star of this film. His skilful performance as Ken not only makes you laugh, but also makes you empathise with the hero. Margot Robbie is just perfect for the role of Barbie, and her heartfelt embodiment of an existential crisis is riveting to watch. She is the most perfect choice of actress, it's impossible to imagine anyone else in the role. As noted in the film, she plays the stereotypical Barbie, which is entirely appropriate, but she also exudes the undying, exaggerated optimism necessary for this candy-coated world. Her acting is immensely enjoyable.

It really struck me that the worst thing the Kens had to go through in Barbieland was being ignored and not given much importance, whereas as soon as 'Barbie' entered the real world, she was hounded and objectified.

Particular attention should be paid to the idea of the film, of embedding an existential crisis in the image of the perfect doll. The metaphors conveying the cracks in Barbieland's facade resonate in the soul and make us think about our reality, where ideals are not always as perfect as they seem.

The visual splendour of "Barbie" is simply mesmerising. The costumes of each character, especially Barbie and Ken, are so exquisitely and meticulously made that they deserve a separate admiration. The sets, which embody the world of Barbieland, immerse the audience in a unique universe where every detail is created with love and passion.

In my opinion, this film was an intelligence test. I have seen many comments as people describe that the film attacks men. It really isn't. One question I would like to ask the people who are so vehemently heckling this film is, "Are we sure we've seen the same film?"

The soundtrack is the true cherry on the cake. The richness and variety of songs from talented performers add to the emotional intensity of the film. The beautifully chosen songs underscore the mood of the scenes, making the film even more captivating. The additional participation of some A-singers such as Lady Gaga with her unreleased song "Fashion", Taylor Swift with her "Wildest Dreams" and Lana Del Rey also with her unreleased song "Queen of Disaster" would have been another great plus for the film.

After such an intriguing ending to the film, I really want to see a sequel as soon as possible.

9 out of 10

"Barbie" is a film that is worth seeing and definitely worth discussing after watching. This film will surprise and make you think, and I highly recommend it to all connoisseurs of quality cinema. I don't know why I want to watch this film again. And again. And again. That's how much I enjoyed it.

A lot of reviews on here mention that the male characters are consistently portrayed as evil, but I think this was done for the purpose of satire. That being said, there are moments where the tone shifts abruptly, and I felt like I was being lectured by a liberal arts college professor. I don’t agree with the ideology being lectured. I think men and women have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages in society, and this movie offers a one-sided commentary on the difficulties of womanhood. I’m fine with satire of patriarchy, because, after all, it’s just a joke. But as soon as the preachiness took over, I found myself checking out. Expand

One of the worst and most controversial films in very long time. It is highest degree of third wave feminist man hating fantasy.

The way men are treated in this movie, is absolutely horrible and that's the only realistic part in this movie. Because men are treated horribly in real world as well. I have seen so many reviewers point out how this movie shows how badly women were treated and are treated right now. Yeah, i guess that's why men's suicide rate has been sky-high past 10 years. But i guess if you are rich or semi rich woman who lives in gate-protected LA neighborhoods, no wonder you don't know ANYTHING about real world.

This movie had most misleading marketing of all time. Yes, i mean it. Out of all movies ever made, this one takes the prize. They got so many young people hyped to watch fun-happy-go-lucky summer movie. Instead they got another feminist lecture and of course radical feminists in their 30s and 40s love it.

Thankfully this movie will be forgotten very soon.

Anyone annoyed by any message in this movie should ask themselves why watching it makes them so angry. Then, they need to remind themselves that now they're angry, it's obvious the terrorists have won.

I honestly didn't like this movie at all. Plot was very weak, meh writing and overall the entire movie had this weird vibe. It wasn't like the trailers.

This movie loves men! It's like being at a roast. I was like "We do be like that!" the whole time. Kind of reminds me of "girls rule and boys drool" playground ribbing. So fun. And how could a movie hate men when it gave the best role to one?

One can only hope that this movie doesn't reach 1 billion. But then again, even if it does, doesn't really matter, because it's not a first time that garbage movie makes a lot of money. Fast and Furious/Transformers made also a lot of money.

Ones doing it are MC moderators and they get paid, to constantly monitor these reviews and make sure that only positive reviews would stay on top. I did not know anything particular about it and didn't see any trailer before. So I was really suprised when I watched this movie. And I was nearyl laughing the whole time! Haven't laughed so much for a long time! The Barbieland is hilarious and the tropes they use as well. The feminism and empowerment message is so over the top that this is funny as well (without losing its critique). So I just can recommend watching this movie, but try to avoid trailers. Expand

While I must begrudgingly admit Barbie is better than it has any right to be, that doesn't mean it's great. This is a tolerable comedy with far too few laughs (about 5 in the whole film by my count).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the movie and I can say this is the most surprising movie of the year. Loved the movie. Greta really did a great job in balancing the emotional scenes as well as the comedic ones. I was surprised that there were some emotional scenes in the movie but hey not only were they there but they were well done. The scene at the bus stop where Barbie looks at the old woman was just beautiful. The jokes in addition were well written and the scenes were not just filled with stupid jokes like how we saw in Thor L&T. Was great to see a movie with jokes and fun considering how all the recent movies were all action and stuff. The cast was perfect. Margot Robbie as barbie was a incredible choice (that 4th wall break about her was well done and smart), Ryan Gosling as Ken was just....perfect. He and Simu Lui killed their role. Micheal Cera as Allan was great. He wasnt used too much, or too less but the perfect amount. The plot was well a bit thin but was well executed with good pacing, however the ending scene between barbie and the founder could be cut by a min or two. In contrast the "Ken War" has to be one of the best comedic musical scenes hollywood has come out with. That was just incredible to watch in the big screen. The set was just beautiful. Well done and executed on all levels, good pacing and great jokes. Good movie however I can see some people not liking it as this may not suit for everyone. 8/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think a lot of the negative reviews really miss the point of the movie, people saying that the Barbieland segment was so fun and what they expected the movie to be, but then getting pissed that it moved into the real world and changed "for the worst", "got boring", or "was a slog to watch", are the exact reason this movie was made. Actually, I think they do get the point, but they think it's a negative point when really it's the opposite. The "real world" is an accurate representation of the real world, we live in a patriarchal society where teenagers need to be popular and mean to feel any sense of belonging, where mothers are seen as just that and nothing more. That's the point of the movie, and that's why it isn't for kids, it was never even marketed towards kids, just because it features Barbie doesn't make it a "Kid's Movie" it IS a movie about society, about feminism, about patriarchy. The scenes where Ken turned Barbieland into Kendom is a representation of the real world as well, when men don't feel "seen" they make everything about themselves, they were never hated, never belittled, they just weren't the main character for once, the Barbies were and men HATE not being the centre of attention, if you're offended by reading that, then you're the problem.
All the actors and actresses were perfectly cast, the soundtrack was amazing, and the points brought up were valid and eye opening.

People who didn't like this movie, never wanted to in the first place

Her perfect life is upended she and Ken visit the real world. Writers Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig (who also directed) have come up with brilliantly clever ways to upend expectations, while making meaningful statements and providing lots of glee. Robbie makes a perfect Barbie, but it's really Ryan Gosling, as her special Ken, who makes the best impression. He takes a non-descript character and makes him sweetly charming and simply hilarious, a brilliant turn. Gerwig has infused every frame with bright energy, delightful moments and surprisingly subversive observations (esp. the Mattel references). The final dramatic scenes could have been a bit shorter, but the whole movie is filled with lovable whimsy and giddy fun (and a few touches of humanity). It's so much fun to play with this Barbie!
