Distasteful movie that uses a beloved children toy to push a radical feminist narrative to children.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can you expect from the movie called ,,Barbie''. Apperantly you should expect toxic femininity and pseudo patriarchy. In this movie Kens are treated just as an add-ons for Barbies and later they all decide to be sexists. Ultimatly the movie ends by restoring ,,feminism'' to barbieland and even tho the whole movie started because main ken was mistreated by main barbiue, all of the barbies decide to treat them slightly less. Also for 2h long movie they sure do have a lot of pointless scenes that drag for too long. And don't get me started on false advertising. Expand

The film is not what it might seem at first glance. The film exaggerates the problems of the modern world, which helps to understand the true essence of all these problems. Despite its pink wrapper, this movie definitely deserves your attention.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movies was a terrible disappointment. I'd group up watching Barbie movies so initially I had been looking forward to Barbie, but the film is nothing like what the posters make it out to be. In fact, I'd say that this film is "Barbie" in name only. The first part of the film in Barbieland was enjoyable, if a little predictable. The costume design was wonderful. However, everything after that was absolutely terrible. Even though this movie is listed as a comedy, it isn't funny. All of the jokes and humor fall flat. The film also suffered greatly from poor writing and an inconsistent plot that made little sense. At first the story seems to be about the owner of Stereotypical Barbie having issues that are being reflected on Stereotypical Barbie in Barbieland and looks like it's going to be a wholesome story about Barbie going to the Real World to help the owner of her doll with her problem, similar to the 2000 Disney film Life-Size. However, as soon as Barbie arrives in the Real World the plot of the film changes and seems to instead be focused on themes of politics and sexism with Barbie being openly catcalled and harassed by men at every turn. When the plot does managed to be steered back towards Barbie's original goal for going to the Real World it's very brief and gets completely derailed when she finds the girl who is supposedly her owner and the girl tears Barbie down like any stereotypical Mean Girl. The plot then goes in yet another different direction when Barbie's brought to Mattel Headquarters to find it governed by men who want to put her in a box and send her back to Barbieland. At this point it's looking like Mattel are the villains in the movie, but, wait! The plot soon changes course yet again with Ken, having accompanied Barbie to the Real World, discovering the "patriarchy" and returning to Barbieland by himself where he takes over and brainwashes all the Barbies into glorified servants for the Kens who treat them far worse than the Barbies ever treated them. Barbie finds out that it's the mother of the girl she found that's actually the one that's been playing with her doll and Barbie, the mom and the daughter and return to Barbieland where they find it completely altered and it's revealed that Ken is actually the villain of the film. The humans and the few Barbies that weren't brainwashed band together and plot to take back Barbieland, deprogramming the brainwashed Barbies by ranting about unrealistic expectations men place on women and then subsequently using the stereotypes most women rally against to seduce the Kens then make them jealous of each other. All so that the Kens will fight one another and be distracted while the Barbies seize back control of Barbieland. Afterwards the film tries to make us sympathetic for Ken despite his hostile takeover of Barbieland and the downright and disproportionately horrible way he acted.
This movie was terrible on all fronts. It's a comedy that isn't funny. The plot is mess. There's always either too much overacting or underacting. It's bogged down with an excess of political themes. And it really just isn't a Barbie movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NOT A FILM FOR CHILDREN! Some funny banter and scenes, but it's impossible to review because I do not know what I feel when watching it.

I am split between the good and bad, and there is a lot of bad.
A faux feminism film which perverts the truth in reality to try and make this crap about a fight against the Patriarchy, while Barbieland is a full fledged Matriarchy which keeps the male dolls down, and the only way to hold any status is to transition yourself to female (i.e: specifically the Doctor Barbie) which is a blatant form of misogyny on it's own.

After Barbie comes back to Barbieland/Kendom she struggles with not knowing where she fits in, because she doesn't fit in. She has no ambitions, no job, does nothing of substance throughout the film, and does not treat Ken as an equal partner.

How is that feminism?

Kendom's revolution was squashed because there is no violence in the film (besides the butt slap & the girls destroying their old dolls) and if you want a real democracy to flourish, let alone sustain a Kendom revolution - weapons are likely needed.

"Revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way." - Malcolm X

Then the Matriarchy is restored, and the Kens ask to have some say with society going forward and are rejected.

Therefore it deserves a 5, and that's generous.

There were a couple of long monologues that took me out of the movie for a moment, but it had me laughing from start to finish. I think one of the most powerful scenes was when Ken first gets to the real world and sees everything covered in men, statues, history, even money. It's presented as a funny moment, but it had a very powerful impact. It's a positive for Ken, but it was a very sad scene to realize how left out women have been. And to extrapolate from that, everyone who wasn't a rich white man. Makes you wonder what we could have accomplished without wasting so many minds. Expand

Gerwig's idea of the battle of the sexes feels like it's been hermetically sealed in a plastic toy box since the '70s. The misogyny of the real world depicted in this film is so over the top that it doesn't even work as satire. Men don't act like that where I live. (Have men EVER acted this way, slapping the ass of a stranger in broad daylight at the beach?) Anecdotally, I know and encounter hundreds of males. Most if not all of them are generally concerned with being respectful of women and are, to varying degrees, making a good faith effort to be an ally and treat women as equals. It's confusing and regressive for a film like this to depict all men as drooling, ass slapping morons.

When the film got going my initial thought was "this is genius, using barbie to unpack the psychological pressures of advertising and societal expectations on women", subverting the IP toy film concept. It also seemed for a bit like it might go one step further and take a crack at the ways boys are being neglected in a post feminist landscape through the emasculation of the Ken characters. Unfortunately it didn't pull either of these off. Its conclusions were vague and felt as fake deep and plastic as the dolls this movie is based on.

I should mention that Issa Rae & America Ferrera are just so awesome a-swell in this world. Now! having grown up in the 90s and seeing how popular the toys were, I was apart of the “Barbie” crazed era in primary school. It’s really cool knowing everyone has another summer blockbuster coming that they can be truely excited about. Really hope that everyone can give “Barbie” a chance, because it has a lot of HEART. Many are critical about the impact that this movie may have on younger kids, but I do question whether these children would be negatively affected by issues and terms that are not appearing relevant to them specifically in the context of the cosmetic child applicable backdrops.

I think this movie is particularly relevant for teens discovering themselves and considering the way society impacts on their emotions, on adults who are still struggling with the challenges of patriarchy and matriarchy in society, and the older generations who are set in their ways and could take more time to consider how things are impacting younger generations.

I think it’s this in-between space of feeling both fulfilled and not fulfilled by viewing it that makes interesting conversation and makes it art.

Bottom line: The film both said a lot and didn’t. It’s surface level but also raising some uncomfortable questions. Oh and it’s sparkly, it can be entertaining and vibrant, and funny too. Loved the Ken dancing scene! Made me want to give ken “more love”, specifically, like the space to be “ken”. Is this maybe a reflection of white corporate feminism and it’s limitations?

It tackles subjects such as modern day feminism, the patriarchy, gender stereotypes, and capitalistic greed in a whimsical, emotional, and absolutely hilarious way. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet pays respect to the serious issues it touches on. I can say that THIS is the BEST Barbie Movie ever made!!!

Margot was phenomenal as Barbie and Ryan was fantastic & surprisingly funny as Ken! These two performances are a huge W for me!!!

I laughed & cried throughout the film and after I left the theater it left an emotional but happy impact on me! And it's all thanks to Greta Gerwig's direction and writing. This feels like Toy Story 3 but it's made for teens & adults centered on Barbie with a lot of love, humor, care, feeling, and emotion put into it.

With a female director directing Barbie, Greta had put a lot of love and feeling into a movie centered on a certain doll "Barbie"

And now with Greta directing the Netflix Chronicles of Narnia Reboot. I now believe in her! I think she's gonna do great in doing a Chronicles of Narnia reboot! And if James Gunn hires her to direct DCU's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, I'll always be proud and believe in her.

And after I watched Barbie... Greta Gerwig is now my favorite female director!!!

TLDR: This film is life-changing!

Barbie is a fantastic film that tackles the idea of how patriarchy has effected our society and how no matter what, women can't really win because of it. Its a funny, quirky and emotional masterpiece and if you disagree you are most likely stuck in the nostalgia of the old Barbie animated movies (which were based on stories wriiten by old white men) or have so many internalised prejudices that you mentally cannot handle the thought of a women being something other than an object. The cast went above and beyond in this movie and I will 100 percent be seeing this film in movies again and bying it when it comes out on DVD.

You could tell who was going to watch Barbie based on what they were wearing. Inside the screen, it felt comfortable and our audience was laughing together.

The movie itself takes a whimsical approach to deconstructing patriarchal issues and idealising a world run by women. It was only at one point towards the resolve of the movie that this narrative was lost on me, but it picked right back up afterwards.

I would 100% watch again. It was Kenough for me.

The basic message of the movie is that social constructs like matriarchy & patriarchy make it difficult for us to be ourselves & we should question those constructs so we can figure out who we are & finally become/be our real selves. Nothing new, it's an age-old message that is always great to circle back to & reflect on - and delivered with humor & intelligence & great acting/directing. I am a die-hard Ryan Gosling fan & I love Greta&Noah which is why I went to see this film even tho I was terribly conflicted because it's called Barbie & about Barbie. More on the film:
The casting department did not fail on any character. The side characters amazed in their roles such as Michael Cera as Alan. The costume department killed it! The outfits were amazing! I’m sure Halloween will be filled with attempted replicates! Each film frame was amazing. It would take another viewing the analyze the small details. The narration was spot. Above all else—- the script and pure raw performance… wow. The line delivery was honest no matter a joke or a serious take on womanhood. Any woman who knows Barbie needs to see this movie. This movie was fun and paid great homage to both those who love Barbie and those who don't. My husband - who could care less about Barbie and had to be dragged to the theater - left talking about how much he enjoyed the movie and even said he would go see it again in theaters. We were laughing so much. The humor was perfect for adults but without being inappropriate for kids. Even the songs were so funny! The first song is just hilarious if you listen to the lyrics. The costumes were amazing. The dance scenes were fun. The Ken storyline was HILARIOUS. Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu were just fantastic and Michael Cera as Allan was so good!!

I've seen people online mad that they were making fun of the patriarchy and I feel like if you feel attacked by the movie, you're probably part of the problem. My husband had no problem with the lighthearted jests they made towards men, even saying he felt like he was guilty of some of them (like trying to always help me with sports).

The theme was pro-women without being too overly feminist. It was about appreciating the beauty with being a woman, ALL aspects of being a woman including the beauty of aging, finding our power, and even learning that it's okay to be an average woman (you don't have to be Presidents or physicists to be a powerful woman). I think it's such an important message that leaves you feeling proud to be a woman.

Overall, this movie is so fun and perfect for summer. Go watch it again and again for some fun.

Topnotch, flawless Some other human characters were underdeveloped compared to Barbie and Ken, but that was expected am excited to watch it again soon. The pacing is not perfect and its huge potential is not fully matched Cinematography is great here, Set pieces are outstanding and the Soundtrack is a masterpiece.

want to take a minute to take about Greta Gerwig she is so clever and talented hope this movie will push her to direct big blockbuster movies that she deserves I'm not someone who often watches comedies, so they don't make me laugh much, but if they all became as funny as Barbie, I might give it another go this film is a good critic of patriarchal rule, without overdoing it. It questions gender roles in a fluid way, and brings existential questions to the fore The Barbie movie had a very easy going start with parties, colors, and making fun of stereotypes. It's all very musical-like untill Barbie asks the question about dying which can be seen in trailer

This film is colorful and 'alive', making it a joy to view upon. The set pieces, especially in Barbieland, are brilliant- and it truly makes me want to know if they actually built out a real-life Barbieland set Going into Barbie with having little to no expectations at all can be such a delight. It was beautiful and brilliant, didn't expect it's gonna be too good. Greta tells the -ve side of the real world beautifully wrapped in humor and childhood nostalgia for manyMargot is the STAR, she's unreal man, whatever role she does it seems she's born for that

Margot Robbie as Barbie is best because even her name rhymes with barbie ;) saw oppenheimer yesterday and it was very slow and borring dont watch it all those five star are paid scam dont fall Ryan was brilliant and so was Will Ferrel, both did an outstanding job In the end, Barbie proves to be much more than just a marketing gimmick, showcasing a refreshing take on a beloved cultural icon and making it a must-see for anyone seeking a smart, humorous, and visually arresting cinematic adventure Barbie indeed subverted expectations and stereotypes. Overall, the movie was way more than I thought it would be and I definitely recommend it. The humor isn't hilarious but I chuckled when jokes were relatable. It's not made for everyone but try and keep a clear mind while watching it! The casting choice were sublime and each Barbie, Ken and even Alan nailed there performances The few cameos were also pretty fun, and with a lovely touch at moments

has it ups and downs but it was mostly entertaining and i think that was it's main goal and they succeeded in that If you are a Barbie fan you'll definitely have a blast This film is definitely not for kids, as it focuses on problems and dilemmas adults have to deal with. The writing isn't perfect by any means, but overall Barbie is a pretty fun adventure

And...it works surprisingly well for adults - not so much for kids

One time watch for visuals and light hearted story :)

Barbie movie series seamlessly blends charming storytelling, beautiful animation, and an empowering message that will warm the hearts of fans old and new.
Its ability to transcend the boundaries of imagination while remaining relevant and relatable.

The animation style deserves special commendation, as it showcases the industry's continued advancement in creating vibrant and detailed visuals.

Moreover, the story itself is both heartwarming and empowering. Barbie, as always, leads by example, showcasing her kindness, bravery, and determination.

While the film beautifully balances humor and adventure, there are moments where the plot feels slightly predictable. However, this doesn't significantly detract from the film's overall appeal, as the strong messages and captivating visuals overshadow any minor shortcomings.

In conclusion, the 2023 Barbie movie is a must-watch for all Barbie enthusiasts and those seeking an entertaining and inspiring animated adventure. With its stunning animation, well-crafted storytelling, and positive values, this film proves why Barbie continues to be an iconic and beloved character.

I never expected to leave a film about a plastic Mattel Childs toy and leave with my inner child sobbing and healed. Themes of the effects of patriarchy and an existential crisis.
Growing up I was told by aged 14 to throw away my barbie because I was "too old" to keep them anymore. Ripping away a part of my adolescence as I became an older teenager. Watching this film rekindled and healed my inner teenager, knowing the part of myself and the part of themselves so many girls threw away to become adults. Abandoning childhood naivety as they realised the effects of the patriarchy. Barbie is so much more than a doll, she taught so many little girls they could be anything they wanted. I had so many barbies as a little girl and I loved them all. They still remain a pleasant memory of my bygone adolescence. This film brought so many girls together to just bond over what it means to be a woman. To nurture our inner children.

As women we all have so much power and potential that for too long has been diminished and undermined by men, and even by other women, as we’ve been conditioned to point the knife we were handed by them against ourselves and each other. Everyone was laughing and crying in the theater together and the community feeling of everyone dressed in pink was such a cute human moment. Not to mention having a hard time finding parking because every spot was filled; as were our hearts during this wonderful extremely important film. Thank you Margot & every single person who took part in making that experience happen. I cannot wait to watch it again!!!!! Expand

The casting was perfect. Especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling shine through and through. Hope it opens new doors for Greta. Can't wait to see more from her.

The first half of the movie genuinely made me laugh on multiple occasions, something that I find very rare in cinema experiences, even from some of my favourite movies. I went into the film thinking that it would be a little corny and maybe even a hard watch, but it exceeded all of my expectations. In all categories I found it exceptional, it was serious in some sections, but lighthearted and funny in others, the different emotions were spread perfectly throughout the film, it never felt jarring or forced. The set and character design was also perfectly executed, with every choice feeling deliberate and only feeling out of place when intended by the film makers. The characters conveyed the message of the movie subtly and beautifully, giving each character a distinct style.

For the overall message of the film, it is beautifully conveyed and as such it is powerful. This movie was one of the most relatable and empowering movies I have seen. Overall this was a beautifully executed film, if you think it might be too silly or poorly executed, watch it and see for yourself, I highly recommend it.

I know this review may sound like a joke, but I am dead serious, this is a wondrous movie and you should watch it if you have even the slightest interest in seeing it.

Big summer funtime must see!
Pink bubbles of the compassion, seriousness, and joy. Rejoice, a spectacular spectacle masterwork.

This film delves into Barbisplanation as to why Barbie, this so specific figurine has the ideal imaginations of women across every spectrum, every country is front and center. The complete humanitarian nature and playfulness is exemplified through this kitch comedy drama film.
It's not so much what Barbie looks like but the dreams of what lives can be for little girls when they grow up.
That's the greatness Barbie imbues and inspires in girls.

If males or men poo-poo this film, it only shows their inadequate understanding of girls and women and why they're on the outside, and why the fail at partnershipping females.

This film has brilliantly executed Barbie's world, lifestyle, and friends.
It's actually quite genuine ingenious and sincere to show you as it is.
All the cardboardness and hard plastic grounds why the fantasies it evokes are so poignant and real.
Everyone can play everyday without any harm.

Sure the props are poofy and fluffy,
however they do not define Barbie.
Neon yellows, peach pink to magenta pink
super convertibles and the boatiest of boats
Fur coat Ken to hobby horse Ken
Yes, it's all there.
The cherry is just that Barbie can be ordinary or and ideal.
A super extraordinary everyworldly accomplished archetype.

The director Greta Gerwig excels at storying telling with camp, parody, satire, big musical numbers, and drama. Equally firing all burners at all times.
A great opus of subtleness and condensation of Barbiessence.

And perfect casting.
Margot Robbie is just outstanding embodiment and her Barbie is pure finesse. Her core gives absolute meaning and believability to the whole film. We believe in her and root for her. Pure Aces. Just fun and wow.
Ryan Gosling unrequited hokeyness is so apropos. He makes up laugh with him, for him, at him because he is so us when we get happy, quirky, humiliated, or ignored. He's such a cut-up.

The writing dialogue by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach is served deliciously pink with no apologies.

A rainbow cornucopia of explosive and thrilling musical numbers, characters and quippy animations. Finally, it safe fun fiesta. For sure, double entendres are everywhere and you don't have to get them to just enjoy the sensationalism and sentiments. Kids will enjoy it like a circus or parade so bring them.

As a guy who grew up with my grandma, she never minded whether I watched Barbie movies. This Barbie film addresses a lot of issues that women have to deal with that I was aware of, but I had no idea how painful and distressing they might be. This Barbie movie outlines a lot of concerns that women have to deal with that I was aware of, but I had no idea how painful and difficult it is when compared to men. The film addressed how women are expected to attain perfection in all aspects of their lives due to the ideals set by our society at large. Now I understand why women strive for perfection and how it isn't enough by society's standards. Women's accomplishments are seen differently. Men are praised for doing the bare minimum. We may think we are advanced as a society, but if you look deeper, you can see that it rooted from things that made women think they need to take it to the next level, look beautiful according to the standards and strive harder to be respected. Being a woman infact is hard work to start with, being able to experience periods and having to push out literal human babies out of them is not easy work. BEING A WOMAN IS ENOUGH. This is a movie where there is a place where women rule and men exist but they were never mistreated and degraded. And for somehow male audiences still sees it as a threat and insult for them. Expand

A Very Conflicting Film on Many Fronts For Me.

Growing up, I was a pretty big fan of the old Barbie Direct to Video Movies. Being a boy growing up in the late 2000s I had to watch them while everyone else was asleep, like I was doing something taboo (which it kind of was at the time). Girls in elementary and middle school would talk about them, but I knew if I even said a word about it it'd be constant scrutiny, from them and my other classmates. Those films, as well as the Tinker Bell ones, WInx Club, Monster High, Totally Spies, they all were very formative for me as a kid.

Recently, as an adult, i've finally been able to talk about these things and be open about liking them, and I was very excited to see this movie. Going into the theatre was fun, seeing everyone dressed up in pink was neat and I was having a blast through the first half of the movie. Once they got to the real world, I was still laughing at all of the patriarchy jokes they were making, as I thought the movie was making the point that both worlds were broken and they had to work together to fix them. However, as the movie went on, it just felt like the narrative was screaming at me in the theatre that I shouldn't be there. Even if I loved the sets, the performances, the acting, the jokes, I couldn't get past that this movie of a character that I personally really liked was reaffirming all those childhood traumas of being othered as a man who liked things considered "girly."

The movie seems to set out to break gender roles, but it honestly just reinforces them by alienating a lot of people who would really love to support its other message of humanity and everyone being flawed in their own way. These "Girls Rule, Boys Drool" narratives are, in my opinion, very juvenile and only serve to hinder any progress we can make in breaking gender norms and making everyone feel comfortable to be themselves. I loved literally everything else about this movie, but a movie that makes me feel like less of a human being will never not be painful.

A modern hot pink masterpiece.

To summarize the negative reviews: some people did not understand the sarcasm of Barbie's matriarchal society being "perfect" and felt victimized by the female empowerment narrative. They neither watched the previews nor read the reviews, but they feel justified in saying it was a blindside.

This movie invites you into the rich (and needless to say vibrant) world of the familiar stereotypical Barbie doll, with the welcome additions of hilarious Barbie lore. The plot centers around Barbie's existential crisis when her feet flatten and she discovers she has cellulite and her journey to correct these glitches and return to her perfect life. If you're hoping for a cathartic cry or two, you're absolutely in luck. Inconsolable laughter? You got it. Cringe so hard you nearly sink through the seat? Yep. It's a journey. Margot Robbie and America Ferrera are magnificent. It's worth at least one watch, maybe two.

Barbie's existential crisis was funny and enlightening. It went beyond social commentary on gender to explore themes like death and what a gift it is to experience the whole gamut of human existence vs a predetermined perfect trajectory. I never played with Barbie so I wasn't sure if this movie was going to do anything for me but I found it a fun celebration of femininity. Those who are saying that this movie is against men, it's not - the point is that when things are out of balance, when people are not allowed to achieve their own potential then society itself loses out. This imbalance occurred in Barbieland, a fictitious place run by women, and "the real world" primarily run by men. No one is saying the Barbies in Barbieland were bad because they allowed that to happen. Similarly no one is blaming men in the "real world." It's a natural outcome of the imbalance of power and opportunity. Expand

Anything revolting against the "status quo" of "WOMEN MUST BE PUT DOWN" will get unecessarythis movie might just be the first one I've ever seen that tackles women's rights with a direct attack on all the cliche IM THE MAN sorta stuff. Anything revolting against the "status quo" of "WOMEN MUST BE PUT DOWN" will get unecessary hatred especially on a platform that does not need proof you went to see the movie, anyone can write a review which leaves room for misogynistic men to try to assume control over the situation by writing bad reviews and making the movie seem like a flop! Its really not, its amazing, the acting, the HUMOR, the story, and the content! Its a literal and full masterpiece! The humor was abundent all throughout the movie, the ending I still cannot get over, it tackled and adressed some very serious problems about society, and it left me feeling absolutely inspired to support women and to do my part in making the world a better place for each other! The theatre experience was even more amazing! Everyone decked out in pink, the theatre constantly roaring with laughter, it felt like a real family, bonding over trauma the world that's been taken over by man has given women. I seriously recommend watching it ESPECIALLY for men. I'm sure very little will go see this movie (even though we did see a ton of men at the theatre watching it), some men are just too self absorbed to care if women are suffering, being abused, or just plain harassed so Ill doubt they'll consider this movie as a MUST, but maybe, just maybe they'll walk away being a little bit more empathetic to women. Or take it as unreasonable complaining LIKE IT WAS ADRESSED IN THE MOVIE. "You have to love being a mother, but you can't talk about your kids all the time or that's bragging, you have to suffer in silence because if you speak out it'll be considered complaining" not sure if this is the exact quote or not, but you will hear something similar in the climax of the film with a ton of other sad truths of what its like. So to everyone who watched this movie, and to everyone planning to go watch it, lets fight back on our own front, write reviews! Explain what it was actually like to see the movie and lets raise these reviews! This is one movie worth watching. Expand

Gloria's monologue about what it's like to be a woman is beautiful and poignant but barely scratches the surface. I hope this is a feminist awaking for many young fems and a wake-up call for many men. The soundtrack is flawless. Billie Eliish's song has had me in tears all week. I love being a woman and I love that this movie celebrates the nuances from the silliness to the suffering and everything in between. In a world of kens, be an Allen. Expand

So funny yet had so many underlying themes that truly reflect the human race. It surprised me by playing into both perspectives of a male and a female in society and showed several parallels when Barbie world and the real world intertwined. I think despite what people say about the loose ends that may not have been tied off such as the daughter and mothers relationship, I think that if it did tie those ends, it would not be the same. These days a plot is so predictable and I feel like this movie for once surprised me consistently. Every turn and twist implemented was a good one and I enjoyed every second. Not to mention the soundtrack, it was incredible. I loved every part of this movie and it really does portray accurate themes of life in the sense that there isn’t always a perfect ending for everyone. I highly recommend the movie, GO WATCH!!!! The jokes were witty, funny, well-written and did not impede on the tone of any serious moments. Barbie was for sure targeted for kids but made for adults to enjoy just as much as the little ones. The casting was phenomenal, every actor embodied their character, Margot Robbie is dynamite in her role delivering every line with sincerity and real feeling. Ryan Gosling was the epitome of Ken, fun, and lovable but he was also able to sublimely deliver emotions that one would not associate with Ken. With 2 powerful stars you would think that the secondary characters would be unnoteworthy, but Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell command the screen so remarkably, not to mention every other Barbie and Ken, and Allen too. All of this without even mention the cinematography and the breathtaking music which culminates into a delightful story that impressively tackles pretty serious issues. Expand

It's exactly the modern feminist manifesto we needed as a society right now, and was simultaneously the longest marketing ad for Mattel ever LOL I loved this movie, I cried multiple times. This movie feels like it was made out of pure love for women. Many parts of the film were like watching a celebration of female joy. It had a smart and necessary analysis into Barbie's role as a cultural icon and the effects she has had on girls self esteem, body image, etc. Ken played a very important role. He was essentially an incel who ultimately redeemed himself by rejecting the patriarchy and becoming a whole person (a whole Ken if you will LOL). He realized he could only be happy and become whole by rejecting his own toxic masculine ideals and accepting that he can be whoever he truly wants to be without the patriarchy. This movie has a lot of deeper meaning that was barely touched upon, but nonetheless welcomes further discussion about how both women and men are oppressed by a patriarchal society. Expand

The style is there, the costume and set design is there, everything looks great and sounds great. The performances are also there, Margot Robbie as Barbie is perfect casting and Ryan Gosling especially is the big standout, and is easily the best part of the film. However, it's the on-the-nose delivery of its message and themes, that clashes poorly with its meandering vagueness, one that is both relentless and repetitive. The film is very message heavy, but instead of saying and doing anything interesting with this topic, it instead just kind of meanders aimlessly at moments. Expand

As with a lot of other movies this year, I'm not really getting the fuss with this as far as controversies are concerned. Not only do I feel as though the commentary here is mostly innocuous — nay — benevolent, but it's pretty evenhanded and much in line with the filmmaker's other studies on eccentricity, nuance and empathy. Never thought I'd be getting a thoughtful treatise on the inherent difficulties of being male in a movie about "Barbie," but here we are. Largely, though, this represents yet another step up the ladder of greatness for Greta Gerwig, as she ventures out of the world of explicit realism and into surrealist ecstasy. Margot Robbie absolutely carries this movie, but make no mistake, the Ken bits involving Ryan Gosling are just unmitigated entertainment. This movie also has some truly beautiful things to say about the human experience and living as a whole. I knew "Barbenheimer" was going to be a whole lot of fun, but, man, are we lucky both these movies turned as well as they did, with either film representing an easy contender for my favorite of the year. It is not a Barbie Movie

It looks like Barbie. Walks like Barbie. Talks like Barbie. But, sadly it is not a Barbie movie... I will not be recommending this movie to anyone. This film focused more on the message it was trying to make than what the film was suppose to be about. An iconic, little girls toy and her imagination. As a genuine Barbie fan, I felt this film made a mockery out of me. It took out all the magic of why Barbie can do anything, be anyone while still loving pink and sparkles and dressing up. Instead she was consumed with dread, and was given a "reality check."

Legally Blonde is more of a Barbie movie than this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 'Barbie' was more of a political movie promoting feminism across all aspects in human life rather than a film of what Barbie really is like. As a man, I found to be slightly unsettled and uncomfortable watching the film as all the time i was watching, men were considered baddies whilst women were heroes. I get that because it's all about Barbie, but it kind of felt one-dimensional and even a little shallow. The end of the film really angered me because she decided to become... a HUMAN! Yes, A Human! In a film about dolls? That was a mistake. The point of the film was so Barbie could understand what life is like besides being a barbie, and she chooses to be human? It completely defeats the purpose of dolls! On a good note, The acting was great and the setting was fabulous, but i can't shake off the feeling that this film is almost an insult to men, because of how badly they are trying to spread the word for feminism in this generation's kids. Terrible piece of ill imagination, doesn't really worth any more detailed criticism.

Like what should be even discussed here? Complete lack of any point aside from an attempt of a corporate to avoid feminist aggression for unrealistic body expectations?

The points brought in the movie look so stupid. After all women were already famous in professions like math, physics, acting, programming decades before Barbie existed.

Given the doll was invented by a woman, specifically for girls, with an amazing body because otherwise nobody would buy it at that time they still keep blaming men for something with absolutely 0 logical connection between the facts. Even my wife could not make any sense out of it.

Brainwashing drama at the end looks especially disgusting. Given men do not really have tools to brainwash girls in reality, but the very same Barbie doll did that a lot, being a part of body standards story.

I would highly recommend to stay away from that movie, and do not show this tasteless piece of confusion to your kids too. Save your time on earth for something better.

The film was written and directed by Greta Gerwig with writingAfter many iterations and transfers to different studios, Barbie finally found her dream home at Warner Pictures. The story is about Barbie who suffers an existential crisis. The film was written and directed by Greta Gerwig with writing help by Noah Baumbach.

Already, the film has been nominated for “The Next Big Thing” by Queerty, and won “Most Anticipated Film” by HCA Award.

On a personal note, I absolutely loved Barbie when I was a little girl. She was my favorite toy ever and I played with her for hours, changing her outfits and accessories with every outing I took her on. For me, it was all about her gorgeous clothes. My angel mother hand-sewed even more clothes for me and Barbie to enjoy. I had it all: her house, camper, car, etc. She could do anything and had such a hot boyfriend, Ken, who really was just another accessory as portrayed in the movie.

I wanted this movie to just be fun and sweet, but there is a serious anti-male undertone throughout and it’s being labeled as angry feminist propaganda. Are those two things true? Sadly, yes.

THINGS I LIKED:
Margot Robbie is a goddess. She’s the perfect “stereotypical” Barbie. Her only request to the director was to create a swimming pool that went from her bedroom to her swimming pool. Great idea! I would love that too! We even get to hear her sing a tiny bit. Young children and grown adults are now donning all things pink and celebrating feminine power while lining up to watch this movie in theaters.
Ryan Gosling gives a fantastic performance as Ken. His perfectly tan texture looked exactly like the doll I had while growing up. When he saw his daughter’s Ken doll tossed into the mud next to a smashed lemon, he immediately texted director Greta Gerwig the message, “I shall be your Ken. His story must be told.” Ha ha We get to hear him sing and see him dance. He is Kenough.
Ariana Greenblatt is such a natural. I fell in love with her when I first saw her in the movie Love and Monsters. You can see my review of that cute movie at https://moviereviewmom.com/?s=love+and+monsters
The cast is filled with fan favorites like Kate McKinnon, Will Smith, John Cena, Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, and all narrated by the legendary Helen Mirren. It’s entertaining to see the cast list because there are so many actors listed as “Barbie” and “Ken.”
I had a brunette Barbie that looked just like Emma Mackey. Emma is such a doppelganger for Margot Robbie in real life! I also had a Skipper like the one in the movie!
The music is fun, peppy, and energetic.
The set designs look perfectly Barbie with that pink, plastic texture. So much attention to detail was given, such as the exact font that was used in the movie to match the font we see in her marketing in real life.
There’s so much visual and spoken humor.
America Ferrera’s speech about how difficult it is to be a woman in today’s world had a lot of truths in it that most women have probably experienced.
I always get a kick out of movies that reference other movies. That happens several times in this film.
The film definitely celebrates womanhood, but there are darker themes in the mix that cast a shadow over what could have been a perfectly gentle movie for little girls and their mothers. Why do movies and women think they have to demean men in order to empower themselves? One of the movie’s messages is that men are idiots and only tolerated when it serves women.
Part of me really loved seeing the female empowerment element of the movie, but part of me was really felt bothered by some of the subtle messaging that the patriarchy is evil.
Some of the Barbies are actually Trans actors. One of those actors said the movie is “candy with a little poison” and another said that this movie would end the gender debate forever.
Who is the target audience for this movie? If it’s supposed to be for mothers and their young daughters, then why are there so many sexualized jokes?
I’m really bothered by the line that said, “Women hate women, and men hate women. That’s the one thing they can agree on.” The movie makes the message that men and women are better off without each other. The movie portrays Mattel as being completely run by men; however, the CEO of the company for 30 years was a woman. Today, the Board has 5 women on it. The message seems to be that women should turn men against one another to save our society from the patriarchy. “Make the men complacent and then you can take the men’s power.”
I hate it when people use the term “fascist” because it’s always used incorrectly.
Some of the characters also bash capitalism, while the film studio continues to sell movie tickets and merchandise like crazy.
There are some plot points that have serious holes in them.
There is a lack of consistency. For example, sometimes Barbie moves stiffly like a plastic doll and other times, she moves like a normal human.
