Second: the worst thing is that some decided to advertise the film as "feminist", which threw it into the middle of the ideological war... Third: if the film had come out in 2000s we would have treated it like "Pinocchio", "Bicentennial Man" or "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (yes, there is motive of searching for own humanity and meaning) and we would laugh ourselves to tears. The film is funny, it's quite successful satire on all sorts of extremes: feminism, patriarchy, stereotypes or weird warriors for the "social cause", but with some unnecessary quirks (mocking Pregnat Barbie for example). A reflection in a distorted mirror, satire, exaggeration, playing on stereotypes... Surprise, surprise: in Barbieland there are Barbies everywhere! The world is plastic, exaggerated, just like the world of Barbie, and Ken is just an accessory - just like in the world of toys! "Real" world is exaggerated more and this part is sometimes more tiresome... And no one from the target audience will appreciate this strange (and creepy!) reference to "2001: Space odyssey" from the beginning of film, a vain effort. Once it would have been an absurdly funny comedy in pink and plastic, today it is "woke" and divisive... because everything must be like in the "real world", sad. It is a very positive film, and we too easily fall into extremes. Blockbuster that is original, imaginative and not a tenth part of a well-known brand. And gives you food for thought. PROS: Margot Robbie is perfect! Ryan Gosling as Ken steals the show! Development and transformation of these characters. Visuals, set and costume design in Barbieland. Attention to details. Cast and acting (Yes!). CONS: Sometimes too preachy and then complaining about "patriarchy" has crossed the line of cringe... Expand

With that being said, the humour is kinda cute and has made me smile a couple of time but nothing more than that.

The actors are awesome and are probably the best thing about the movie, Margot Robbie is born for this role and has done a masterful job.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The barbie movie is honestly so fricking weird;
The trailer made itself look like it was going to be focused on barbie and the barbie world, and from word of mouth, I thought it would be the barbie version of the LEGO movie, but the ACTUAL movie couldn't be further from the truth; The movie wants to be about barbie and celebrate barbie, with a whole song and speal about how barbie can do anything and can be anything, but at the same time tells in detail how barbie is bad because it's made by the patrairchicals systems and she damages women's rights. The story's message feels conflcited with itself to the pint where the only good character is, ironically, ken (who is made into a "bad guy" because he finds out about patriarchy). It's so **** weird, and that's the only way I can describe it TBH

Men are not to be hated. Even if that was acceptable subtext (which it's not), then we should live in a world where both women and men can be hated. Not just one gender. Equality goes both ways. Stop the hate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having watched all the animated movies, I thought I'd take the time to see the theatrical release of Barbie's first live action film. And I've got to say, I really like the new direction they are taking with this franchise. While I usually have fun mocking the cheesiness of the old films, this was an entry I could actually take seriously for a change...for the most part. It's one of those situations where an average comedy is attached to a really powerful message. Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, has started to think about death for the first time in her life, and wonders why her feet are becoming more realistic. Weird Barbie tells her that she is responsible for making a doll owner upset. And she needs to head to the real world in order to figure out what went wrong. This is a trope I've seen before in plenty of other live action remakes of other nostalgic pop culture and I'm really glad it's not the focus of this film. Sure there are some boring human characters here and there. But fortunately, the focus of this film is never forgotten. And that focus is, taking a closer look into Barbie's signature message, "You can be anything".

Later in the film Barbie learns that she is responsible for stereotyping while attempting to empower women, and doubts herself. Wondering if she has caused more harm than good to girls across the globe. It's a message I've heard before and it's usually fixed by reinventing the character, similar to how Super Girl was seen in the past and how she is seen now in media. I was hoping they could perhaps explore that message a little more delicately than just having a group of angry teenagers shove it down our throats. But it's not the leading message of the film, so I say just save it for a sequel. As for the leading message of this film, it's realized in the third act where Ken has taken over Barbie Land, brainwashing all the dolls, and poisoning the land with stereotypical masculinity...and horses. I'll admit that second addition I'll admit is pretty funny. So it's up to Barbie and the forgettable mother and daughter pair to save everyone. Ken really works well as an antagonist, because his motivation is tied in with his lack of identity. But he takes a poor direction, taking away all the rights of the female dolls and only giving new rights to the male dolls. But after he is defeated he breaks down and learns from Barbie that he should figure how who "he is". Write his own definition. The great thing about this message is that, it's a reminder to the boys, men, and even those struggling with identity that they can choose how to live their life. Not with tradition, but rather with choice. It's okay for boys to like feminine things. It's okay for men to wear dresses if they want feel pretty. It's more than acceptable to do things women enjoy and vice versa. What matters is what you do explores a new meaning of freedom and feeling whole. And in a day an age where there are still millions of people that have yet to understand this message of being whoever you want. I say more power should go to films like this.

While the film isn't perfect, with its hit and miss comedy, its occasional lengthy exposition, a bit two much fourth wall breaking, and its forgettable human characters. The effects with how the dolls move and the messages are quite impressive. It may not be a masterpiece, but what this movie leaves its viewers with will be refreshing to look back on in the passing years. You can be anything...and you can inspire others to do the same.

Movie was overtly, passively-aggressively (do these cancel each other out?) "political." It made me realize how embedded some people are in their meatbodies. There must be something that happens to make some females (and males) draw strong gender lines. As someone neutral on the issue, I found it to be educational about the state of consciousness is to a large number of people. Glorious dance battle and "beach off". Liberal amount of 4th wall breaking. Maybe the film will leave a viewer ultimately feeling like "gender" is all a bunch of **** as the main human said, patriarchy and Barbie were invented because tough **** happens, and it feels good to have a excuses or outlets; but it probably won't. How can I describe the horror I feel when I realize this movie took years to make, received over $200 million dollars in a budget, was given such a beloved IP to play with, and was able to attract some of the top star power in the industry, and what was produced was just a single unbridled scream of hatred towards the male gender? Chances are, if you live in a society where you can make this movie, then the people you hate do not have the real power in it, you do. This movie doesn't just hate men, it loathes them. If this movie had been made targeting any other group, a public service announcement would be spread nationwide warning of violence against that group, news companies would report ever minute of every day of aggression towards them whether real or perceived, and the president would give a statement in support.

As a man, I truly fear for my physical safety being in the proximity of anyone who loved this movie. I am terrified for the development of any son in the grips of a parent who takes to heart its message.

I looked for Lizzo but if she's in it I missed it. I don't like to sh*t on people's hard work, so let me counter the fact of this movie with a proposition for a similar future project: make a Barbie movie that is like _Drunk History_, but narrated by sober children. You get normal kids who play with Barbies and have them tell you what their Barbies are doing. Usually it will be a string of surprises, reenactments of stories they saw elsewhere.. but some of these will be novel, coherent stories. Take those and illustrate them with the same lavish detail as in the *Barbie* movie I just watched. I think that would save everything I love about this movie and trim out everything else. Expand

Very lazy and simplistic in it’s themes and messaging. I was expecting more from Gerwig in exploring identity, autonomy, and the journey inward, instead of the constant meaningless patriarchy babble and the simple “life is terrible”, oh no wait, “it’s great” ponderings. The only part of the themes and exploration that landed very well was the insight into few positive but mostly negative impact of Barbie toys on women and especially young girls. Wonderfully and ecstatically formed. It was designed to be the Barbiest Barbie film that ever Barbied. Gosling and Robbie are fantastic. The real world stuff was a bit dull and saccharine and you could cut out all of the Mattel boardroom stuff as it simply wasn’t funny or smart, and added very little. But the Barbie world sequences were thrilling and joyous. Which is what a Barbie film should be. Gerwig has created a fully realised, interesting world with a unique vision and voice. Expand

It's two hours of non-stop aggressively anti-male propaganda. The film can't go more than 30 seconds without reminding you of the evils of "the patriarchy", how women are horribly oppressed, and how much better everything would be if only women were the only ones allowed to have power. It also **** on the concept of motherhood and relationships. Ken is just pathetically simping for Barbie the entire movie, and Barbie doesn't give a **** about him because she is literally a strong independent woman who don't need no man. There's even a narrator who explicitly tells you two minutes into the movie about how Barbie thinks she won the culture war for feminism, but little does she know in the real world women are horribly oppressed and victimized by men. This movie is literally a two hour radical feminist propaganda piece. Stay away at all costs. And for the love of god do not bring your kids to this - if all that garbage above wasn't enough to drive you away, Barbie is also obsessed with death the whole movie, they bring it up probably 5 or 6 times, and there are multiple not-so-subtle references to Barbie and Ken's genitals, including a scene where one of the Barbies says something along the lines of, "...but I sure wish I could see Ken's package under those shorts". If I had brought a young kid to this movie I would have walked out within the first 5 minutes. This is the worst movie I have ever seen, and it's not close. Expand

What could go wrong? The same dialogs, characters, signs, haters, Acrivistis, political speech disguised as joke, and I could go on and on just to resume in i identity politics, the most crude feminism with men being low life stupids or worse, just for a start. If you could understand the minimum, I”ll tell you: it’ll only gets worse and worse until the end of the movie.
This movie should be rated R so kids wouldn’t be affected by this very dangerous propaganda.

But as the day went on I kind had that “Ok, that kebab probably wasn’t a good idea.” The film is stunning in its production design and creativity, and Margot Robbie is perfectly cast as the Stereotypical Barbie. For the most part, the songs are catchy and performances are solid for the type of characters being portraying.

When we strip away the outside world and all the messaging, Barbie and Ken have a few poignant moments – Barbie realising she’s not as perfect as she’s been made to believe, or when Ken receives his first modicum of acknowledgement of being a sentient being he’s ever had in his life. They also share a couple learning and growth moments which I thought would pay off at the end of the film.

I don’t know why, but I was hoping for something that would actually enlighten its audience, to acknowledge that things are a mess and make intentional and meaningful steps to get us closer to understanding and equality. The Barbie brand, history, controversies are so engrained in our culture that this movie had a potential to change our perspective of the world, and what the future could be. That’s a lot of pressure for one film, I know.

However… this film is absolutely not immune to the not-so-subtle messaging that has permeated all forms of media and entertainment recently. In fact, it embraces it. So much so that you have a scene where a man walks up behind Barbie and slaps her on the backside, in broad daylight, in a crowded space, in front of her boyfriend…. And this kind of portrayal of men (alongside bumbling incompetent CEOs and sleazy police officers) appears to be how the film views the world.

Maybe it was this kind of over the top comical depiction of men and the world generally that allowed me to get through the movie and kind of enjoy it, but upon reflection, I realise now it’s just kind of… yuck.

Barbie had the rare opportunity to be a film experience that not only highlighted issues in the real world, but offer and foster some ideas for change. Instead, we receive divisive and mean-spirited attack on half the human population as well as anyone who thinks having a family is an acceptable path in life. And also flat feet and cellulite.

If you kind of switch off your brain for an hour and a bit, and don’t take this film too seriously, then maybe you’ll have a lasting positive memory after seeing this movie.

But if you need to do that to enjoy something, then you need to ask yourself: why?

If you're so aligned and don't listen carefully, appealing phrases and and sounds wash over you and sound good, but if you actually pay close attention or read text of it, it was incoherent nonsense saying very little, at best.

The pinnacle was the "It's hard to be a woman" speech by the America Ferrera character that sounds great until you listen critically. When you discard issues all humans face equally, you're left with a few only women face, but a bunch that where it's actually easy to be a woman. Women can't express fear!? They never get thanks for their role!? - seriously? You could easily list many unfair things women in particular have to face in life, but instead we got this drivel. And this is on top of the random inexplicable plot, that just makes no sense and it's a lightweight and weak movie.

It's otherwise likeable with had a number of sweet and hilarious moments and hints of depth trying to get out, but overall it was just incoherent and inexplicable, and the reactionary idiots aren't entirely wrong to point out misandry. I expect their very negative reviews, but I'm more baffled by the 10 star reviews that declare this almost perfect. I don't know what movie they watched but I think they just saw what they wanted to see, not what was on the screen.

From the marketing I expected the movie to be a fun, 'fast-food' style movie with sub-par plot exploring the world of barbie with dance routines, songs and lame jokes.

What I got was a man-hating movie. It bashes and blames men. It mocks men and masculinity. It would've been acceptable if at the end there is a redemption arc. Eg. showing that both genders have their own unique skills and that by working side by side the world can be a better place. NOPE. The Kens started as useless beings with no power, say, or achievements. They exist for barbies only whenever it is convenient for her. At the end they are back where they started.

The marketing team should win the oscar this year for their deceiving adverts. They managed to lure kids and young teens to 2 hours of brainwashing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A greatly executed movie with an evil message. I am so conflicted about this one. I went to see it with my fiancée, and we both had a good laugh, the movie was great stylistically, pretty well-acted apart from some instances (I understand Simu Liu is a good-looking guy but he doesn't have range to pull this off) and generally well-made. But the message, my oh my the message. We start off with little girls literally destroying baby dolls like "f motherhood I wanna be a fireman". Then we have a Barbie society where all men are just window dressing and generally doddering fools. Then we switch to the "real" world where despite all the work of RBG and voting rights and equal opportunity programs women are still oppressed and publically harassed. As if the work of the titans of female rights never happened. And all of this is like... Okay sure it's a skewed representation but then the final resolution of the movie isn't that "men and women should work together to achieve greatness" (ergo: equality), no, it's "we Barbies have to oppress the Kens again because that's how the world will be perfect". And I'm sitting there like what?? That's such an evil message. Equality should be the goal, and equality is not one sex oppressing the other because the other is by definition flawed beyond repair. I also had a conversation about the movie with my fiancée to see if she actually felt like the final monologue. She said she does feel that way, but she never thought it's the evil men who make her feel that way. I as a man wouldn't want any woman to feel this way and I never thought I did anything to make them feel like this. And neither do my friends. So I feel like the male behavior has been severely misrepresented but it's like sure, many movies did that to women before, fair enough, but bottom line this message of "oppress or be oppressed" is such an evil, evil message. One point for amazing production design. Very unimpressed by the rest of it. Camp is best done by John Waters. He wouldn't have had a lengthy rant telling the audience how bad half of them are. He wouldn't have had a lengthy rant telling the audience how bad half of them are. As a woman, yes, really, this was depressingly divisive. It really felt like this was made by someone who has never been hugged by a nice man. Or met one. It's just sad. I left it feeling sad. Is that the point? Marketing for this was also brilliant, I thought this would be a mashup of Enchanted and the Lego movie and just expected at worst it would be predictable. But women, we can do better than this whinefest. Men aren't all that bad. Really. Also, the world-building felt lazy. It could and should have been explored more - what does it mean that there's a 'barbie world' that people can just visit? What about actually using it to solve world issues? Are there other worlds like this? A Thundercats world? I want to know! Expand

“Barbie” is the first live-action feature film after numerous computer-animated and television films.
After a shrewd promotional, marketing and commercial campaign that has raised expectations, expectations and a real Barbie-Mania, the latest film directed by Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird" and "Little Women") is finally arriving in cinemas, based on the famous fashion doll line of the same name born from the mind of Ruth Hendler and marketed by Mattel since 1959.
“Barbie”, scripted with acumen and wit by the director together with her partner Noah Baumbach, is an ambitious film in which the homage to the most iconic doll of all time, is not only strengthened by an elegant aesthetic and a surrealist heart imbued with rich and cultured quotations and cinephile references, but also becomes an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a woman today, as well as on the daily difficulties and struggles that this brings with it.
The work is not only celebratory, but it is also a mix of criticism (see the jabs at Hollywood, at Mattel – here in the figure of the CEO played by Will Ferrell, at all human contradictions) and social satire (the controversial standards of perfection and beauty associated with Barbie), as well as a cinema that speaks of female empowerment directly from the sensitive voices of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig.
In this brilliant, eccentric and imaginative film, the world's most famous doll experiences her personal growth, the transition from a utopian world to a real one, and essentially her evolution into becoming a human being and a woman.
The protagonist experiences the value of women on herself and conveys the impossibility of aesthetic perfection (and not only); and above all she affirms a strong sense of humanism that must be respected and carried forward. There can be no awareness, maturity and rebirth without (having first experienced) suffering and pain.
The film is enjoyable, funny but also unequal. It alternates very successful moments with less resolved ones.
Its most effective strengths are the irony, the pastel-colored photography, the softly pink scenography of Barbieland, the costumes, the convincing interpretations of the whole cast, the well-choreographed musical sequences between songs and ballets (there is also Dua Lipa – her hit “Dance the Night”), the soundtrack composed by Alexandre Desplat, some dazzling ideas of the enthralling screenplay (above all the incipit reminiscent of the monolith of “2001: A Space Odyssey"). Among the weaknesses, an excessive weight given both to the "subversive" aspect towards what the plastic Barbie doll has always depicted and represented (the ideal of the female body unachievable by consumerist and anarcho-capitalist behavior), and towards a specific didactic ambition which, if they could work to affirm the educational intent of the film, on the other hand greatly hinder the narrative fluidity, a greater inventiveness profuse in it, and ultimately the emotional charge.
Despite this basic non-balance and despite a mixture of genres, tones and registers that are not very cohesive with each other, the film is stratified and hides much more than what it shows.
In this sense, the concepts of existentialism and individualism are appreciable, which in some way have been argued and treated in the intertwining of events and characters: both Barbie and Ken undertake similar paths that will lead them to self-awareness, after having ventured into the real world and having discovered that it is a repressive patriarchal society, divergent from the matriarchal utopia of Barbieland; a real world in sharp contrast with a person's autonomy of thought, with respect for the other in his differences from us, and with the idea of what makes us human. Therefore, thinking of yourself as a self-determining individual makes you question the conditioning norms and expectations of society.
Furthermore, the script, directing style and staging also move in a functional way to the main ideological discourse that underlies the entire work (that simply being oneself which is already enough; or that fact that every girl is free to transform her Barbie fashion doll into something alternative to the blonde and elegant icon originally designed by Mattel), but despite this all along the way, they remain a little too much prisoner of these valid "messages" and of their own intellectual nature, leaving the ways in which the issues mentioned were dealt with were ordered and disorganized, as well as their insights were a bit incomplete and incomplete (especially in the central act and in the epilogue).
Net of this, net of renunciations and limits (also generated by the desire to speak to every generation), the film remains an entertaining, intelligent and humanistic entertainment that can be appreciated both in its visual-sound dimension, very accurate and refined, and in its more socially/existential "educational" one... Score: 6 / 7 out of 10
