Starfield Review: A Space Odyssey Confined to Cutscenes

Starfield promised to be the ultimate space exploration game, setting high expectations for freedom and immersion in an expansive universe. Unfortunately, it falls short in a crucial aspect: space travel.

The game opts for cutscenes and loading screens to transition between planets, denying players the exhilarating experience of piloting through the cosmos. This design choice feels like a missed opportunity. A game of this genre should offer more than cinematic sequences to portray the grandiosity of space.

The lack of real-time space travel restricts the sense of scale and immersion that would make the universe truly feel alive. Space is reduced to a backdrop, rather than an explorable environment, making the game feel more limited than it should.

    Final Thoughts:

Starfield offers a visually stunning world but fails to deliver on the freedom and immersion that should be central to any space exploration game. While the game has its merits, the omission of actual space flight feels like a glaring oversight that limits its potential.

Everything feels hastily thrown together. The universe is oppressively uninteresting. Each NPC you meet you can safely expect them to have nothing interesting to say.

There are some minor positive points. The combat is decently fun were it not for bullet sponge enemies, bad ai and grinding to get ammo. The ship combat is somewhat fun although it serves no real purpose except providing a barrier to entry of certain places.

Overall, one of the most shocking disappointments in recent gaming. Save yourself the time and go replay a classic Bethesda rpg instead

Npcs also gave no schedules and just walk around in circles never going back to their home or anywhere besides dtheir spawn points. New Atlantis is the first major city you visit and there is no immersion whatsoever. Npcs don't even board the trains again just walking in circles until you turn around and they magically dissappear. This is supposed to be next Gen yet it can't even do what oblivion did many years ago. Why remove all the features from the old games and instead add quantity over quality? Npcs repeat their lines over and over and it's very noticeable since they only have a few lines of dialog before they start repeating. The space exploration is non existent. You cannot fly the ship off of a planet and fly to another but it's instead all done by pointing and clicking to fast travel. Again no immersion at all. No man's sky actually meets you seamlessly fly from ground to space to another planet all in real time and this next Gen game can't even do it. It's very boring. The graphics also look like an Xbox one game. This game was designed for that system and not the series x and it truly shows. They lied and said this was an rpg with you having ultimate freedom but that's another sweet little lie (out of hundreds) from Todd Howard. Thankfully the game is on game pass so you don't have to waste your money on such a big let down lie if a game. Xbox has fumbled that football yet again after halo infinite and red fall. More like red fail and starfailed. I was more excited for this game than anyone and literally oblivion and skyrim let you do so many things that this game doesn't have like the npcs having schedules and not just walking in circles doing nothing. The game is also riddled with loading screens for literally everything you do. And they aren't just short load screens they're very long. Try it on game pass or just wait a long time and hopefully Bethesda can fix and add all the things they left out. Expand

For the price and promotion made huge disappointment...

Selling a game at full price with repeated bugs, completely messed-up faces and disastrous lip-sync is not normal.

Big disappointment, the planets are beautiful, but the fedex quests are not very interesting.

A feeling of emptiness and filler. I hope the console version will be better optimized than the PC version.

The game feels empty and disjointed and constantly breaks immersion with so much required interaction through menus and time spent in loading screens. It feels like Bethesda kept all the bad parts from previous games and didn't improve on any of the good ones. The UI is terrible, especially on PC. Why can't you see the contents of tour own inventory and the vessel you're transferring to at the same time? Why do we have to rely on mods to have any sort of filtering when you can have hundreds of items? Why can't we swap weapon mods over to rarer weapons like you could do in Fallout 4? The list goes on. It seems the budget was spent on graphics and that Bethesda is happy to rely on mods to to fix all the glaring issues. The space combat is so boring and bare bones that the game would have been better without it. No need to buy fuel, no need to buy missiles as they just magically recharge. Whoever was making decisions on game mechanics has clearly never played a space sim like Freelancer, Everspace or even anything from the X series. There is no point in any excitement for a Bethesda title anymore as they seem to revel in mediocre releases that simply aren't worth the time to grind through. I pity whoever pitched the idea to Microsoft that buying Bethesda would be a good investment. Well done Todd Howard. As always, it just works. Expand

In a space exploration game, you'd assume you can actually explore space right? Wrong. You can't actually fly except in very limited circumstances, and everything else is just a loading screen to hide the limitations of the engine. Except games that are 7 years old had seamless space to atmosphere transitions. The fast travel system completely breaks immersion.

You know that internal playtesters made all of this clear, Bethesda simply didn't care. They never go more than a few seconds to remind everyone they made Skyrim and Fallout.

Were the programmers forced to return to the office so they stopped caring? Very, very poor showing from Bethesda. Stay away.

This was supposed to be the ONE, the stuff of legends that we'd all be applauding for the next decade! This was supposed to be the gold standard of all games moving forward! There are no next gen moments! Somewhere in an alternate universe, they probably got it right, but in this reality, they fumbled the ball! This has to be one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history so far. How does something that took 25 years to become a reality, ended up as a nightmare? Bugfesda strikes again, this time with a poorly executed wannabe mashup of No Man's Sky and The Outer Worlds. Todd "The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth Of All Time" Howard's arrogant boasting of spending a $200 million budget on a 500 people team for 25 years of development is yet another blatant lie considering the game doesn't have the sandbox infinite universe that NMS provides, nor the excellent storytelling, character development and narrative content that TOW managed to deliver, not to mention the humor. Hell, Starfield doesn't even have a proper ship-flying mechanic built into the game, considering it's a damn space FPS/RPG.

The game is constantly cockblocking your immersive experience with loading screens in places where you would not expect to see one since Mass Effect 2 was released in 2010, a testament that Bugfesda doesn't care to update their gaming engine to modern standards and prefers to dump those resources in creating 100 variations of coffee mugs, books and cafeteria trays, or writing and incessant amount of completely pointless NPC dialog lines and an absurd amount of meaningless errands disguised as quests.

Speaking of technology and its implementation, the game was released without Ray Tracing and DLSS, which took the community 1 day to create a mod for (go figure), with UI animations and interactions capped at 30 FPS on console and 60 FPS on PCs, which the community again took 1 day to increase to 120 FPS. On the UI part, the menus are convoluted and difficult to navigate with a 2-page list of shortcuts that change from one menu screen to the other. The main game UI, even though it is minimalistic and beautiful to look at, is badly designed with everything on the screen having the same white color and no animations. Clearly whoever worked on this, had no idea about color theory, visual perceptions such as depth and contrast detection, and generally how human vision and perception work. They tried to copy the UI of Elite: Dangerous, but again failed, hopefully, someone will create a mod to fix this in the near future.

Last, but not least: the bugs. There are a lot of bugs: from NPCs flying in the air, to ships ejecting you in the middle of space, to NPCs talking with their back at you, to items disappearing from your inventory, this game has it all. I don't think any amount of additional development could have fixed it, the game could've been released in 2025 and still would've had the same issues. The problem is with internal resource allocation, feature prioritization, and technological innovation and implementation.

In all honesty, Microsoft cannot save this company no matter how hard they try. The only way to bring Bugfesda on track is to completely reset and restructure them, starting with removing Toad Howard from any decision-making position. Every game he spearheaded in the last decade ended up a complete failure at launch and a blatant cash-grab during its roadmap, which sparked constant controversy and PR backlash.

It's unfortunate that we still see so-called new generation games with countless loadings, invisible walls and many, many bugs.

No wonder it's not uncommon to see people refer to Bethesda as Bugthesda.

It's just unfortunate that after 3 years of new generation Microsoft can't show what the Series X came from and justify a reason to have one.

Starfield is the embodiment of 'tried to do too much and ended up doing nothing right.'

It's like they handed Skyrim space gear and said, 'Fly, my Dragonborn!' but forgot to give it wings or a functional jetpack.

    Open World:
Starfield is a stale, soulless “world,” that feels disconnected.

Everything is locked behind a loading screen and the game doesn't have an "open world" to navigate and experience. You jump from objective to objective via the UI like some sort of CoD Campaign. You are not in control of flying your ship between systems, landing your ship, departing from settlements, attempting risky docking to board other ships. Everything is a fast travel cut-scene initiated via a key-bind or through the confusing UI.

You read that right. There is no traveling, landing, or exploring to do on your own. When you are “in orbit” around a “planet” you can’t go anywhere; no matter how long you fly for you are no closer to the planet you see ahead of you than before. That’s because being “in orbit” around a “planet” only serves as a “placeholder;” an enclosed waiting zone to open the UI and choose where to fast travel next. There is no open space to navigate. Everything is done via cutscenes which only make you hungry for more. Why can’t I fly my ship wherever I want to in a System? Why can’t I manually find a spot on a planet and land there myself? One click on the map and you suddenly teleport to Neon city. Where is the awe of discovering it by yourself through exploration?

This makes Starfield feel more like a collection of maps/dungeons with no clear link between each other, rather than a connected and breathing world. It's like playing Skyrim, but you are only allowed to teleport between dungeons through the map interface - without the open world in-between.

    Cities:
Like space, cities feel disconnected and non-immersive. New Atlantis, for instance, is not even a unified city. Instead, cities are split into various parts requiring you to fast travel between each district. Other than soulless “citizen” NPCs walking aimlessly around with no schedule, nothing of interest is going on to justify having so many loading screens.

In addition, almost every single building or shop has a loading screen to access, which is very weird since 90% of buildings with interiors are basically just an empty lobby with one shopkeeper. This makes simple fetching quests a nightmare. You have to go through 5 different loading screens just to deliver a package from one part of the city to another.

    Spaceship:
It feels like they wasted all these resources for the Spaceship builder, yet neglected adding gameplay that will make your spaceship meaningful. Space traveling, planet exploration, landing/docking mechanics, and fuel planning - just to name a few. As it stands right now, your spaceship is just a storage locker between your UI fast travels. It is so tedious to fast travel that you may end up not seeing your spaceship for hours during a playthrough, since you instantly teleport to the selected locations and spawn outside your ship. To see your ship and add “immersion,” you would need to add 3 more loading screens to your fast travels. Pointless, since you have no control over anything. You only get to watch the game do everything for you via cutscenes.

    Combat:
It’s… working. Like in any basic first-person shooter game. There are no “classes” or anything else that will make you think “Damn, on my next playthrough I am gonna play as X and Y.” You can tell by the Skill Points you get to allocate that all Traits offer small bonuses to combat (e.g., deal 10% more damage with Pistols) that add no distinctive gameplay or new combat mechanics. They are just… flat bonuses to damage, health, persuasion, ship damage. Class-wise, the only option you have would be to either play a ranged build or a (hardly viable) melee build. That’s it.

    Outpost Building:
Barebones and clunky. We will most probably see paid DLCs adding props and things to expand building, like they did with Fallout 4 (they released 3 paid workshop DLCs).

    Land Vehicles:
Yep, they did it too. The only way of traversing is by foot – no land vehicles/rovers exist in the future. Fast Traveled to a planet in a super-ship? Now you need to jog like clown for 1200m in a barren and empty wasteland just to reach an enemy encampment. Be careful not to go too far or you’ll hit an invisible wall.

    Story:
As soon as you launch the game, you are given a ship, a place to stay, and suddenly a full organization blindly trusts you – which is very off-putting. This feels like a big “roleplaying” part of the game is cutout.

    Graphics:
Starfield feels like a texture-enhancement Fallout 4 mod. There is little improvement between Starfield and Fallout 4.

    Cons:
    - Everything is boring. The story is boring, the characters are boring, the environments are boring.
    - Exploration is a joke. This is a loading screen simulator as you simply spawn back and forth between empty, lifeless "zones".
    - Spaceship building is pointless since you can literally fast travel anywhere, at any time and bypass "space" segments.
    - Space segments are like the "zones" on worlds: you're in a box or a "fish bowl" where the planets are backdrops (that people have clipped through). Its the illusion of space "travel"
    - Spaceships are an illusion, you can't fly them over land, you spawn on a map and have to walk everywhere
    - No vehicles to traverse the large, empty, boring zones.
    - Side quests are next level dull
    - NPCs look worse sometimes than Skyrim and FO4
    - Bugs and glitches, many that are game breaking
    - Voice acting in some parts is laughably bad
    - Every world has 1-2 space crabs or lizards
    - No HDR support (Lol! Why Bethesda?!) and no Brighness options (?)
    - Most planets are flat, bland and uninteresting
    - No mining, usually not more than 1-3 points of "interest" in any "zone".
    - Worst AI in any Bugthesda game.
This is a distaster. Starfield is the crappier version of No Mans Sky, it doesn't even come close to having the features, the functionality, the interest or the competence of a 7 year old indie game.

All the 10 you see here are all from Bethesda drones which is the sole reason this studio can still release a sub-par game with a premium price in 2023. They'll keep kneeling with their mouth open for Todd Howard and Bethesda. Todd Howard is as always, a **** liar. They'll keep kneeling with their mouth open for Todd Howard and Bethesda. Todd Howard is as always, a **** liar. Some of these drones excuse was a predictable "they haven't played the game" or "these must be Sony Fanboys" on valid criticism for the state of the game in 2023. Because tthat's the only way they can justify to keep kneeling down with their mouth open for whatever Todd Howard is giving them. Nothing made a game studio looks worst than it is than Bethesda's and XBOX's rabid fanbase that are so starved of exclusive game that they are willing to whore themselves for this trash.

It's Bethesda's game, with all its jankiness, incomplete features, and design decision that made you scratch your head in a 2023 AAA game. No brightness and no FOV sliders in 2023? 30 FPS menu in 2023? Absolutely lazy game design with an outdated graphic engine. Not to mention unspired story, dead eyes NPCs, and random **** of bugs that it absolutely hilarious to see people still defend it.

It's funny that Larian moved Baldur's Gate III release ahead of this fearing competition when Starfield still couldn't hold a candle to the epic masterpiece in term of concurent users, sheer review score, and amount of content. That was a passion project and it showed. Baldur's Gate III animals have a better personality, animations, and emotions than your main story companions in Starfield. If this is the best XBOX can muster for their exclusives, they deserve to be dead on the water for any future console wars. Pathetic garbage of a game.

Do I recommend it? not on a full price. Wait for a sale and wait till modders fix this game. As always.

There is no Russian language and many other languages. A huge corporation has not been able to localize games for many years, shame and disgrace

Bethesda, the most overrated Western developer of the same old archaic game design, clunky gameplay, atrocious AI, and braindead challenge for stoneheads in coma. Add to all that bugs, missions that cannot be completed, and that unique Bethesda adrenaline of uncertainty of when the game is going to crash on you. Avoid.

They lied to us for years basically about everything. Game is good if you ignore the last 12 years of advancement.

Game didn't live up to what it promised, lots of cut content and pitiful performance. One of the worst disappointments of 2023.
So it can't be worse than halo infinite. Fails even to be the worst microsoft game.

Why didn’t the game come out on Switch, or does this Scam in the form of ScamField not pull out hardware from 100 years ago with such graphics?

It's a big game, but starts way too slowly, and may never get interesting.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
