Im one of the biggest xbox and Microsoft fan boys but not even I can defend this utter boring and soulless feeling game. The first impressions you get from this game are terrible my god everything just feels in a words I can't even properly describe. I literally wanted to stop playing after a terrible ship combat tutorial and landing on the first new planet. Also it doesn't help the character creator and the models look absolutely terrible and how can I get invested into my character when he looks like a mentally handicapped freak. My personal Ethos with video games has and always will be is that if I can't be pulled into the world and its immersion within a hour it's just not for me. Also don't let us ignore the sneakily added identity politics and pronouns in the character creator stage that just makes my **** eyes roll. Escapism in gaming is dead and has been for awhile sure we will get one or two gems but besides that its all garbage. So to end it off don't buy this garbage steal it from your dumbass friend who probably bought it and hide it from him so he will not have to suffer the same fate. Expand

Finished the game just to have all my progress removed (credits, ship, relationships with character). Ridiculously bad game design and sad excuse for ng+. You have to f5 quicksave every 2 minutes to avoid gamebreaking bugs. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

The plot is ludicrous, the actions of everyone feel forced and don’t make sense. Especially compared with Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield’s storytelling appears ridiculously bland. Dialogues tend to be silly.

Space exploration is non-existent - the game tells you unmistakably and even forces you to use fast travel. No exploration like in Skyrim. Load screens en masse.

Besides combat, my highlight are the staring NPCs. My tip is to try this game via cloud gaming so you don‘t have to waste electricity for the huge download.

This game would have been good 10 years ago + the price of the cap is completely inadequate for the quality of the product. Such Daggerfall has more fun with exploration and rpg system than this abomination. Fallout 3 / NV are better in terms of diversifying the gameplay of exploration and character creation. Starfield can be described as everything and nothing, as if making a cake with the addition of salami and brawn, you can, but who will eat it. Expand

Everything else about this game is a complete disaster:
    - the loading screens, overall terrible user experience (UX) design;
    - the amount of bugs and glitches are astounding (not surprising considering its Bethesda);
    - 'the space travel' is a joke, its just a non-convincing, uninspiring, boring emulation of the potential experience, nothing actually happens in space itself except of repetitive boring ship fights;
    - almost all planets are empty and feel generated by AI, major cities and planets are almost as dull;
    - Lore, NPCs, dialogues, factions and quests are dull and and feel generated by AI;
    - AI of the NPCs is one of the worst I've seen in my life (on par with Cyberpunk 2077 vanilla);
    - weapons and perks are boring and don't provide any interesting and unique mechanics to the game role-playing wise;
    - enemies are repetitive and quickly become tiresome to fight with, the fights are just a shooting gallery.

Don't even think about buying the game, and I strongly advise you to not even try to play it with the Game Pass, any RPG player and/or space enthusiast (astrophile) would get disgusted by what he would experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually created an account so i can leave a review.
First: i've played the game for about an hour so i've not seen much but the things i have seen was enough for me.
Graphics: Overall looks nice but the characters look dull. The coloring in this game is very boring.
i have an rtx 3070 and my pc should be running games like these at least on high without performance issues. It doesn't. My highest FPS were 60 when i'm lucky. Also everything is grey or red. I don't think they put much thought in the visuals of the game. Synchronization: the voices and mouth animations look nice
    Story:
Uninteresting story. I've lost interest in it almost immediately since it was just talking and talking about stuff i didn't understand. I somehow got a ship but i didn't understand the reasoning.
Gameplay: Unintuitive. I had to look up most lf the stuff i wanted to do (talking mostly about ship movement and settings)
    Npc interaction:
Doesn't matter as far as i've played. I selected every answer that could deny me the progress of the story but they didn't care and gave it anyway. Maybe it would make a difference later but i doubt it.
    Difficulty:
Idk man. I played on normal and i could just walk up to the pirates and they still missed their shots. Felt like stormtroopers. Yes i needed to take a med pack but i wasn't in a rush to do so.
    Open world:
In no way interesting. Go from A to B, kill a few dudes come back repeat. Quick travel is the most important function here and thus boring as hell.
    Ship movement:
I've realized to late that the robot was giving a tutorial in what the energy does in each section and there was no way in letting him repeat that so... i just winged it. The destroyed ships had loot which i magically teleported to my inventory... no animation no leaving the ship or anything. Just go near and teleport it in your inventory. Seen better in star citicen. Bugs:
It's sad to say but "luckily" i only had one. After the first pirate fight the robot which follows you on the ship was making constant irritating banging noises like he is constantly hit with anything. After i've entered the ship it was over.
Sad to say but bethesda should stick to fantasy rpg (elder scrolls) or post apocalyptic rpg (fallout). Those games were fun.

Most of the characters faces look like they come from a children's plasticine competition and their animations look like they were made by a very cheap AI. The enemy AI is the worst in recent Bethesda games. Enemies movements are completely random. Sometimes they may try to hide somewhere, but sometimes they will look straight at you waiting for you to shoot them, and other times they will just start running in random directions. Optimization on PC is terrible if you don't have the most powerful components. Exploration in this game is tragic and boring. I wanted to love this game, I love space exploration as a concept, I love RPGs and the kind of "firm" Science Fiction tone this game uses (similar to Mass Effect). Problem is this game experience is frustrating to say the least.

Exploration is tedious because Starfield's universe is largely empty, especially when you deviate "off the beaten path." This was really surprising given Betheda's history and their famous touting of their worlds, I was expecting a game where venturing off the paths of quests would be like FO4 or Skyrim, where I stumble onto some side content that pulls me in and I look back two hours later and say: "Wait, I was doing a quest!" To be very clear: Starfield DOES NOT give you this experience in the least. Many of the worlds in Starfield are largely empty and offer few NPCs or locations to interact with.

The gameplay feels dated as well, not outright bad, more like they just took FO4, stapled on some 2016 No Man's Sky, and applied a new coat of paint. Ground combat is very stale, largely due to a combination of bad AI, bullet-sponge enemies, and that most guns have really toned down sounds... Then there is space combat. The ship and base-building mechanics are much improved from their FO4 roots, clearly this is where Bethesda spent A LOT of time, and it shows. I can say I was very pleased with what I could do with my ship after awhile and there are many options in regards to constructing your base/home. That being said, combat in space is just very poorly balanced because you have the same "bullet sponge" issues from ground combat, but the added difficulty of lacking cover. This places a lot of onus on the player making sure you are upgrading your ship, particularly on higher difficulties, and causes this heavy emphasis on resource gathering, hence the NMS comparison.

Then there are the bugs. I expected them given its a Bethesda game, but this... It isn't as bad as FO76, but it also feels like Bethesda just haven't learned anything in the last 15 years. I can't tell you how many times I had companions or enemies stuck on level geometry that would either impede my progress, and more than a few times it required me to re-load and hope I didn't end up with an enemy shooting me from behind a wall or above the ceiling where I couldn't shoot back or end up with a companion preventing me from moving into a room with the quest objective. I had crashes, I had physics and texture bugs, I had objectives fail to properly complete requiring reloads.

I compared this game to 2016 No Man's Sky earlier, and I really think that is what Starfield is: 2016 No Man's Sky with a Bethesda RPG skin. It has the same lifeless universe NMS did in 2016, the same mechanical issues with the world, which I assume are driven by lazy use of procedural generation, and many of the same problems with the gameplay loop. If you're willing to grind it out for the sake of the RPG mechanics and ship-building, the two lone bright spots of this title, then more power to you. Personally, I found this game tedious to play and unrewarding to explore.

The game's biggest strength is its exploration. There are over 100 star systems to explore, each with its own planets, moons, and space stations. However, the planets are all procedurally generated, which can make them feel samey and repetitive. There is also a lack of variety in the wildlife and the environment.

The game's combat is also underwhelming. It is serviceable, but it is not very engaging. The weapons feel weak and the enemies are not very challenging.

The game's story is also a letdown. It is predictable and uninspired. The characters are also one-dimensional and forgettable.

In addition to the above criticisms, the game is also buggy and unstable. I encountered several bugs during my playthrough, including quests that would not progress and enemies that would not spawn. The game is also poorly optimized. The frame rate can be choppy, even on high-end PCs.

The game's UI is also clunky and unintuitive. It can be difficult to find what you are looking for. The game's dialogue is wooden and unnatural. The characters often say things that do not make sense.

Overall, Starfield is a flawed game that does not live up to its potential. It is a derivative game that borrows heavily from other space RPGs. There is nothing in Starfield that feels truly new or groundbreaking.

I hope that Bethesda will address the game's shortcomings in future updates, but I am not holding my breath.

You do pass out because of a mysterious technology, but I was so bored with walking around it didn’t shock me. Because of this I laughed when Barrett just gives you a ship, after knowing you for 30 seconds. The ship is unfortunately a glorified tent simulation. You can’t fly planet to planet, but you need to go into quite a few menus to fast travel. You can’t even take off into space, that is also a fast travel screen. From all this, I feel like half the game is just loading screens and fast travel. The combat is a regression from Fallout 4, it appears the gun combat is purposely held back so that your skill tree makes it fun. But I’m not giving a dozen hours just to play a gun fight to an acceptable level. I can’t recommend this game, the gun play is boring, the introduction is atrociously boring, the universe never grabs my attention. I can’t get into a game that is just loading screens. Bethesda have followed up with a mediocre game. It shouldn’t have been surprising seeing that they released Redfall this year too. I’ll give it 3 stars because I never ran into any bugs in 3 hours of playing, the graphics are good (facial animations are outdated), and there is quite a lot of work done with the cities and factions. However the procedural generation and fast travel means that I never felt like the universe was joined, unlike the other Bethesda games.

The story is flat and wooden. Out of the gates I fail to find any kind of immersion, the voice acting is flat and while the story arc is a fantastic concept it just doesn’t deliver. It tries to do a lot; none of which very well.

With the exception of my interactions with the Crimson fleet missions were little more than fetch this for loosely related purposes and get that because ‘reasons’. Nothing really ties together very well. Loot is horrendous, nothing seems to be that unique or related to a mission set, items are quite similar; none descript, grey, common.

Each planet or area feels empty and certain devoid of purpose. You land basically on the same planet each time where the surface, minerals and the animals are slightly different with a view habs containing random gear. It also misses some of the slightly more goofy sides of previous titles; you don’t build a giant robot, or meet a robotic space captain gone rogue or becomes besties with the undead.

This is a £30 title at best, if you can play it free on game pass do it; except for Baldur’s Gate 3 (which is exceptional) there’s little else going on, but I’d think twice about paying £50-60 for it. Even the free version will leave you disappointed. I’ll leave on a positive note and that is the game does a great job with the way they introduce NG+, sadly I doubt I’ll be taking advantage of it.

Alas, we get to run back and forth for every single quest update, sometimes across many light years, because nobody at BGS said "Hey, maybe we should let them call some of this in."

Terrible. That alone takes 4 points off of the game. The loading screens, terrible animation, horrible story, and broken AI should take off another 3 or 4 points, but I'm going to say this is a 5...because that's about what it is when you compare it to the other garbage that AAA studios have been releasing lately.

Finished. Wait until you finish this game. If you thought it was bad before, holy jeez does it find a way to get much worse. I had given it a 5, but after finishing I'm giving it a 2. Absolutely terrible writing, buggy mess, lackluster "innovation", disjointed and jumbled universe (really just a series of boxes), and I could go on, but I'm just glad to be done with it. Play it for the ship building, which is neat. The rest is a slog at best, and painful at times. BGS doesn't deserve your money ever again. FO76 really was enough for that, imo, but we all fell for Todd's lies.

One more thing…. Let me remind you of some of Todd’s own words: “unparalleled exploration”and “exploration without limits.” It was neither of these things. Not even close. It was a trash game developed to sell GamePass subscriptions to kids whose parents didn’t know why an Xbox Series S is not the same as an Xbox Series X. The game time was padded after data mining by analysts who figured out how many months before someone forgets to cancel a sub and how many hours a month the average Xbox Series S player puts into a game.

3 months for them to forget about their sub? They average about 20 hours a month? Make the game take about 75 hours. This is today’s Microsoft. Wait until they get ahold of Blizzard and Activision.

If you design your game to consist of cells within cells and on top of that, divide everything within with loading screens, it kills the flow of the gameplay and immersion pretty effectively. Towns and procedural sandboxes created upon landing on planets, should be at very least dynamic and seamless for the player to explore. It's tedious, that you have somewhat limited sandbox to play in any given time and yet, you still need loading screen for every single shop, office, hatch, alley, cave, ship and whatever there is.

This kind of game design is not a standard anymore, maybe it was 15 years ago when Fallout 3 came out, but not anymore. There's a lot of games, that do this pretty seamlessly or unnoticeably and let player just walk into places, without loading into a new instance every couple of minutes.

Let's say you wanna do a simple task, go sell your junk after a simple fetch quest and go talk to NPC on another planet, you have 15 loading screens coming.

    "
    Exit planet loading screen
    Enter orbit loading screen
    Land planet loading screen
    Exit ship loading screen
    Enter shop loading screen
    Exit shop loading screen
    Enter ship loading screen

    Enter orbit loading screen
    Land planet loading screen
    Exit ship loading screen
    Enter building loading screen

    Talk to NPC!

    Exit building loading screen
    Enter ship loading screen
    Exit planet loading screen
    Enter orbit loading screen
    Land planet loading screen
    "

    It's atrocious design.

All this is managed via relatively unintuitive and slow UI. By slow I mean that you need multiple key inputs to do anything and almost all inputs require HOLD instead of TAP. This combined with transition-animations makes UI feels sluggish. If I hit my map open while fighting, I need 3 inputs or one long hold to get back to shooting. If I open my inventory, I can't use hotkey to immediately open my quest log, first I have to close inventory, then open quest log.

Apart for that I found the game very soulless and generic. The graphics are fine, nothing special. Looks like they are from the last generation. The planets are very dull and contents are often repeated so they never feel unique or special. The character dialogue is absolutely cringeworthy at points. The characters themselves aren't completely horrible but the designs are so bland, like people you'd see at an office. Nothing interesting about them at all. They lack spark. The story is, again, nothing special. Very forgettable. "Nothing special" seems to be the theme of the game.

The main problem is that the game has current day written all over it. You literally have to choose your PRONOUNS at the beginning. Not kidding. I never remember any Bethesda game doing that. Also going back to the characters, the amount of forced diversity, badass, unattractive women and women who look like they work in a HR department are plentiful. For a game that is so bland to begin with, this breaks the immersiveness and reminds you are playing a game made in modern day California, not exploring on planets far away. It seems all AAA games these days are cursed with modern day woke identity politics which is a big deal-breaker for me and, I'm guessing, a lot of other people.

Not only is this game not the exploration game that was promised (mostly fast travel to designated set pieces) but it is straight up broken. I can not progress due to a character I am supposed to interact with not being present. Reloading saves has not fixed it. I truly can't finish the game unless I start completely over which I will not be doing.

Larian's games like Divinity & Baldurs Gate have given us a fresh look at the brilliance of interconnected story threads & rpg mechanics. games like Horizon: FW showed us how phenomenal these worlds can be without loading (draw distance, fidelity, detail, physics). No Mans Sky showed us how space traversal can be immersive & realistic by flying to a planet, entering its atmosphere, landing & climbing out of your ship. what does Starfield show us? what screams "next-gen" about starfield? xbox cant even get it to run faster than 30fps on their series x. sorry, no performance mode in 2023 is a massive fail.

Bethesda needs to move on & join current gen. we can only hope they leave their creation engine in the dustbin where it belongs for ES6. because this stuff isnt impressing anyone anymore.

The game is okay, but not much more. It doesn't live up to the hype. Generic Bethesda quests, the most fragmented space I've ever seen, and inconsistent 30fps performance that regularly drops. It looks good, but it comes at the cost of countless loading times. You can't even go up a ladder without a loading screen. There aren't too many bugs, but they occur regularly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the loading screen simulator I've waited for.

You don't fly your ship much. You open your menu, ooen another menu, select a location, and fast travel between planets. 6 loading screens to get from one planet's surface to another.

The game is dated, boring, and lacks a lot of the elements that make Skyrim fun to play.

Dead eyed faces on notable NPCs. Randoms look like potatoes with glued on eyes.

I am sorry I bought it. I made it worse by getting the Xbox and PC versions. I wanted other family members to play too.

To be fair it's not trash but its faults just outweigh anything good...or that could have been good.

Starfield is another Bethesda game that fails to revolutionize the formula of loot-shoot-return that the studio is infamously known for at this point.
I was expecting more, but there's not one system that's at least flawed to a minor degree.
-Ship building is fine, but the fun stuff is locked behind perks. -Space combat is mindless and boring, the only thing that determines if you win

-Ship building is fine, but the fun stuff is locked behind perks.
-Space combat is mindless and boring, the only thing that determines if you win or lose is level difference and perk investment.
-The story feels generic and uninspired.
-Gameplay is fine, but I wish there was a bit more, the powers are just another version of Skyrim's shouts but other than being a novelty they just fade in the background, and they eventually lose their appeal.
-Perks lock you out of BASIC GAMEPLAY FEATURES, and sometimes they're required to complete quests, so you can get locked out of them.
-The amount of loading screens in this game is astonishing, want to travel to another planet? Loading screen, wanna land on a planet? Loading screen, don't wanna travel half a mile through a barren wasteland of a planet? You guessed it, loading screen.
-Speaking of planets, how about 950 of them with absolutely nothing to do other than walking around aimlessly for some resources you can't even carry?
-NPC faces look creepy and lifeless, they just kinda stare at you blankly, it really makes you uneasy.
    -Inventory management is a nightmare.
-Performance while not egregiously bad is just not acceptable, I was damn constantly dropping below 30 every time I loaded in a big city like New Atlantis.

There's more, but I'll stop there, overall I'm disappointed by this so called 25 years in the making "space opera".

    Pros

    - Initial appeal
    - Music
    - Scenary
    - Character customization
    - Ship building/customization

    Cons

    - No memorable characters
    - Weak main story which culminates into no answers
    - All enemies are the same - combat reduced to massive bullets and grenades spam against the same enemies from start to end of the game
    - Low weapon variety and next to no creativity of how to do dmg
    - Load screens are acceptable to some extend, but overused
    - Hitboxes are absolutely awful even with weapons specialization
    - UI - basically missing, a few colors put together in paint as background, no elements, no visual explanations
    - Inventory management - mostly annoying, no search, no filter, no sorting, all jammed up together
    - Weak graphics for a 2023 AAA game, especially one focused on Space
    - No boss fight mechanics
    - While planets have several biomes combinations, exploration is reduced to landing on planets followed by 1. walking, 2. explore cave, 3. explore base, 4. kill the same enemy, 5. loot, repeat for every planet.
    - Space combat is scenery, but lacks identity - somewhere between EVE online and SWBF2
    - No immersion in cities - no reactions to player actions

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
