The loading screens soon grated on my patience after having to watch my ship boost into outer space rather than let me do it,

Companions lack any interesting qualities to make me bother taking them with me.
The graphics look good for what we expect in 2023 but I have read reviewers speak gospel on these textures, and to be frank I have got the game cranked to the max and it's not breathtaking, It's just nice, the lip sync on dialogue can be spot on, or resemble a dubbed anime with the lips failing to match.

Exploration, this is just a boring walk across a ProcGen planet outside of the main hub planets, once you've been to one, you've pretty much seen it all.

Weapons and combat, this lacks any real "meat" to it, enemies are utterly braindead and will stand in the open letting you slot them over and over, when they're not glitching on boxes and loose terrain objects.

Space Combat is a complete farce, not so much dogfighting as it is either instakilled by higher leveled AI ships or it's a slaughter once you unlock Class C ships.

I frankly cannot recommend this game, even if you love Fallout or Skyrims offerings, because this offers nothing new.

The story is non-compelling, gameplay monotonous, menus and leveling are a step backwards, and the NPCs are lifeless. Excellent music as with most Bethesda games. I'll be shelving this one until the mod community improves it.

Bethesda has created a mod for Fallout 4. And the concept itself stretches back to the time of Morrowind.
You should not buy this game at least because you do not want to support such a hack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 50 hours+ in with the main quest completed twice and 2 faction quests fully completed. A very disappointing execution, very bad main story execution, tons of unnecessary travel waiting with no gameplay purpose, really bad world building, effectively 0 meaningful freedom in quests and storyline. Main story quest is effectively just 15 hours of doing the exact same thing over and over again. The worst part is that is that the locations are super generic and uninteresting locations. There is only one good quest in the entire main story quest line that features a research facility that is switching between dimensions. This quest is the only good quest in the game and it’s such a stark contrast against the extremely unambitious delivery for rest of the game.

Travelling takes forever. I wish this was a fast travel simulator like it’s often mocked for being. The reality is that the travelling is painfully slow despite a 4090 and NVME2 maxed out PC. They add tons of painfully slow landing sequences. You can’t fast travel directly to the planets surface but you must instead travel to its orbit first. You must get scanned for contraband in almost all of the meaningful solar systems which also takes even more time. You also have to wait for you grav drive to power up for upwards of at least 6 seconds out of memory. The worst part is that it serves so little purpose, you almost never get attacked by other spaceships. While any meaningful orbit interactions / quests could’ve been much better executed by just having them appear in the solar system map view as a distress signal. 0 meaningful choice or interesting gameplay in quests. Compared against Cyberpunk the ability to approach a quest in multiple different ways is just non existent. No proper stealth, no different approaches to the objective and instead just a simple speech check at the very end of a quest to skip 10s of combat. Abysmal non existent world building instead of the cool and extensive world building we saw in Fallout 4. The days of exploring the wasteland and coming across tons of cool structures and settings are gone. You got a few small cities that are hard to traverse with not a lot of substance. If you ever hope to come across a cool building with tons of enemies anywhere you’re going to be disappointed. It’s going to be same looking space building facility you see everywhere else. With the same generic 4x4 meter building block set.

7-8 years of development for this? 66% of the game is spent running in barren planet with 0 meaningful world building and tons of artificially added waiting screens. The rest of the 33% is generic combat with the most linear dialogue and quest options imaginable. To call this game too ambitious is not doing it service. This is a very unambiguous game with even worse delivery.

As for bugs I encountered 2-3 bugs that soft locked the main quest as important characters would start to float up in the air, etc. in all cases I was able to reload the save and run up to the person I needed to talk to before they floated into the planets atmosphere. Not too bad on this front for a Bethesda game.

As someone who is a massive fan of fallout new vegas and a big fan of Cyberpunk this was a massive disappointment. The game designs and direction is incredibly outdated and I have to be honest that for Bethesda to be one of only 2 game studios producing massive first person RPGs like this is leaving me sad. If you are new to the genre and not that big of a RPG fan then maybe 6/10 can be a fair rating. But if you are a massive fan of fallout new vegas, fallout 4, Cyberpunk and were hoping for a big leap forward. Then you’re in for the opposite, it’s a far worse experience than even fallout 4. The 4/10 is for the people that never wanted a looter shooter no man’s sky but an actual RPG with a good story and meaningful freedom.

After having beaten the game and putting around a ton of hours into it so far, I have to say that while it's a fun game, I'm sorely disappointed overall.

Starfield is extremely disappointing through the lens of Bethesda's past history, as it's massive regressions and streamlining of the Bethesda design philosophy makes it feel a lot more empty in a lot of regards. Stuff like the loss of AI Schedules, looting changes on both NPC's and general "clutter", a terrible map for the surrounding area/city, the overall reliance on fast travel due to the way traveling and the instances work, space being a buffer instance where there's a small chance of something happening, but it's just there to get a view of the planet before you land on it, sandwiched between 2 loading cutscenes. (Biggest gripe, world feels so broken up and even on planets extremely empty.). A ton of the Bethesda "staples" are cut down to such a degree that it's hard for that level of immersion to "click" in the same way their games have since Morrowind to around Fallout 4. The very basic looting and equipping (We have now fully regressed into having a grand total of 3 equipment slots for armor with 2 additional slots for clothing.) The armor models comes in 2 different sets repainted, and guns are a weird step in a different direction from Fallout 4's customization, as there is much less of a reliance on it here. It's a weird mix of what feels like a blend of laziness, streamlining, or even rushing that I can't quite put my finger on for a lot of these sorely implemented features.

It's both little and big things that make me sad seeing one of my favorite developers streamline their games from tremendous RPG adventures, to instanced mindless looter shooters.

The game is fun despite all this. It has a lot of strengths, keeping at least a large chunk of the Bethesda charm in the jank that stems from the engine. Combat is the best feeling it's ever been. The soundtrack is absolutely outstanding and captures the world completely. Spaceship building is a blast. The new persuasion system is a massive win. The story and side content has been fun, but suffers from the very basic writing Bethesda suffers from.

Overall, It's in a weird place where I really can't recommend it unless you were a massive fan of Fallout 4 and want more of it, or just really enjoy the modern Bethesda design philosophy. It's a shame Bethesda gets the "mods will fix it" pass, Bethesda should be making better games. They've arguably gone downhill in most ways. Another reason is performance, at least on PC. There's no good way to recommend a game where even on a high end rig you're facing an unoptimized mess.

Can't wait to see where the game goes in the future, but with it's overall disappointing and streamlined nature, I would find it hard to see myself coming back to this game over and over again in the future like I have with previous their games back to Morrowind. Who knows if things will be fixed or changed, or if my opinion will change. YMMV

The gun-play is improved from the fallout series but the classic Bethesda exploration and even quest design is just flat out not here. Many main quests early on are just simple fetch quests to generic dungeons that are reused as generic points of interest. My first point of interest I explored outside of quests was re-skinned on a different planet as a main quest dungeon minutes later. How is that acceptable? The faction quests are mostly fun and interesting but the lack of RPG choices in many scenarios is noticeable. Exploring planets is tedious and they feel largely uninspired. The 1,000 planet "selling point" is a huge detriment to the Bethesda formula many of us love due to the inherent downsides of procedural generation. Rarely in this game will you run across a cool new story or dungeon outside of the main quest hubs.

The perk system is lazy as the "challenges" are not challenges. They are simply just utilizing the skills you just purchased 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 times.

There are pieces here for a really great game but much of the game, especially early, is a slog and that saddens me given how much time seems to be have been put into this game from the Bethesda team.

You know both the companion and enemy AI will be less than impressive, to put it mildly. You know performance, particularly on PC, will not be proportionate with the aforementioned subpar graphics. You know there will be an over-reliance from Bethesda on the modding community to fix these things. All these caveats are present in Starfield, but what has traditionally made these caveats tolerable in past BGS titles is the unparalleled sense of exploration that the games engender. Unfortunately that sense of exploration does not exist in Starfield.

Whether crossing the Commonwealth or traversing Tamriel's terrain you never knew what was going to be over the next hill or around the next bend. Just try to remember the sense of wonder and awe you felt in Skyrim when you first came across Blackreach. With Starfield, a game ostensibly about exploring space, that sense of exploration, wonder and awe is all but gone. Imagine if every point of interest in Fallout 4 or Skyrim was locked behind 4-5 loading screens and only reachable through fast travel (or by running several hundred meters across a barren landscape) and further imagine if virtually every point of interest was copied and pasted using the same assets, same layout and same enemy spawn points. That is Starfield's planetary exploration in a nutshell. 1,000 planets across a large section of a galaxy, all with identical mining facilities, labs, geological formations and enemies. It's soulless, boring, repetitive and lazy. Once it quickly loses its luster what you're left with is a rather boring conversation and loading screen simulator with occasional bursts of combat (which, to their credit, has improved somewhat due to help from the folks that made Doom - though this was an extremely low bar to clear). It's almost as if Todd got tired of hearing his games described as "wide as an ocean, shallow as a puddle" but rather than making those critics eat their words he double downed on that design philosophy out of spite instead.

Will the game perform better and have conspicuously missing quality of life features in a year due to the diligence of modders? Probably yes. But I have a hard time imagining modders being able to replicate that sense of exploration and adventure previous BGS games offered. Such a shame.

The lack of traversal options on-planet before you reach the 400 meter destination is an absolute slog. Locking gameplay features behind skill trees is frustrating as well, especially given the fact that you are unable to respec your character. Bethesda-standard physics jank and uncanny valley lip sync have not improved since Fallout 4. Pretty unsurprising at this point. I didn’t have high hopes given Bethesda’s recent offerings. Being able to customize your ship was one of the selling points for me but I've found no reason to engage with it because I can just fast travel everywhere and dont need to actually use the ship 95% of the time. It feels like a game that was meant to be mission based but they made it open world because that's more appealing to alot of people. Expand

Bethesda never develop their graphics, techniques, nor their storytelling. Game is fetch quests, lacklustre ones at that. Most worlds have copy and paste elements, lacking warmth or personality. World's often empty, or just autocreated by formula. Story is average, it's warm spoonfed faeces for us nostalgia guys.

This game is so boring!! I've read many articles mentioning that it gets great after 12h so I gave it 20h of my time and now I simply give up. I'm bored.

Quests are not fun ("follow the blue square!"). Companions are a pain in the neck ("I need to talk to you, I need to talk to you...") and NPC are freaky. Planets are not fun to "explore". The star map isn't user friendly at all.

*Ship combat is the worse experience I ever had in gaming.
*No maps to show where you are going but I was still able to manage, thanks to Dark Souls.
*You get plenty of credits just drop stuff instead of using vendors, you won't regret it. It will save you the time loading yourself from planet to planet trying to find a vendor.
*Grass doesn't move when you walk through it, makes my character feel like it isn't in the game.
*Character has no reflections in glass, this irks me as I feel like my character isn't in the game.
*I never upgraded a ship/weapon or used a single workbench the entire game, just felt too clunky to deal with.
*The ship builder was a cool idea and fun but I really just wanted to finish the campaign so I could be done already.
*I used my gun I got at level 8 all the way to the end of the game at level 28.
*After completing the main quest I went to explore other planets around 6 to be exact and they were just lifeless apart from boulders or a few plants so I felt no need to explore anymore.
*I had several hard crashes back to Xbox menu, one during the final quest of the game right before rolling credits.
*The shooting/combat mechanics feel like a really bad Borderlands game.

I'm going to go play Borderlands 3.......

At its core, the developers tried to deliver an adventure reminiscent of Firefly, but the immersion is completely shattered by the lack of cut-scenes, set-pieces, and quality motion capture animations. This is, in my view, the game's primary flaw. It's such a shame since Bethesda had a significant budget, and the game had potential – after all, AAA space exploration titles aren't a common sight. Another disappointment is that the so-called "space travels" merely feel like journeying through a corridor with fast-travel between these corridors. You can't fly wherever you want, nor can you land on a planet or moon on your own accord. Moreover, the landscapes on these celestial bodies are utterly dull. Why could No Man's Sky achieve procedural generation, yet Bethesda, with a budget of $200 million, couldn't? The graphics are a mixed bag: on one hand, there's a modern engine underneath with detailed models, but on the other, the lighting is awful and space feels "empty." I don't feel inclined to stay in this world, nor savor its beauty. I've played about 20 hours, planning to finish and delete it. Very disappointed. Played it on Game Pass, which is my only consolation. Had I spent $100 on this, I'd be pulling my hair out right now. You were supposed to be the new Witcher in space. Animations
Strange stuttery animation when walking and turning.
Walking in 1st person is like gliding.
    Too exaggerated running animation.

    Leveldesign
Levels are so stretched like in an MMORPG.

    Conversations
Missing the important last sentence on the screen of a conversation with an NPC when answering.
NPCs in the background talk while i can choose an answer in a conversation, but i can't concentrate on reading while people talk in the background, just shut up NPCs in the background.
I'm so not interested in listening to all conversation options, the options are so not interesting. Unlike Skyrim, I listened to every single dialogue and enjoyed every second.
Faction chief of main quest faction (with way too much eye makeup), first makes impression of an emancipated boss, chief of the faction, but as she 5 minutes later becomes companion, she smiles like a clown, ends conversation with "bybye", how unprofessional.

    Mission design
In the flight tutorial, the assistant talks when it's too hectic. When landed, the assistant sometimes talks too quietly. Letting me miss game content.
Strange annoying sound bug in early mission.
As a player we are unwillingly thrown into the main story faction, 5 minutes later we talk with a pirate chief in a pirate base (whyever game the designer designed that the we wants to risk our live for the new faction yet), and we have to choose the conversation "stop to attack our bases"? Since when are we so loyal to the faction?!
Don't know how to jump to the next destination in space, even if the destination is marked, there is a red text which says i have to activate the gravimotor, but how? I figured it out after experimenting with the engine allocation stuff, but that will be too complicated for most players.

    Reward system
Reached level 2, still in kind of a tutorial, already found an epic item.

    Environment
    Books cant be read.
Armour of killed enemies can not be taken.
Levels of enemies let the game feel like a looter shooter.
When you arrive at the first colonised world, beautiful at first glance, the first thing you hear from an NPC walking by is "i will soon leave here for good", so thanks for destroying the picture.

    Technique
    Only 30 fps.
    Clunky first person shooting.
    Some too small texts.
Walking and combat feels clunky like The Outer Worlds.
Texture pop ups during conversation in main quest, level 3.
Pause menu gives annoying loud music, sorry but let me pause to take a call or talk to my wife, just shut up, I have to mute the TV.

    Fanservice
Missing Italian voice acting, which Skyrim and Fallouts had.

    Sounddesign
    Excellent

Now I have already had enough of this game.
Normally I watch reviews after completing a game, but here I have to make an exception, after such a bad first impression. But I already see an uninstall soon.
The good thing about Starfield is, I don't have to spend my time with this, and I can play other, better games. I would rather play Skyrim or Fallout 4 again.
Please, don't let Elder Scrolls 6 be a disappointment like Starfield.

No feeling of exploration, as you always use fast travel from the menus. I feel like the space ships are worthless. 5. The constant cut scenes and lack of at least limited atmospheric flight is a joke.

Really, really let down by this game. It's should be titled "Loading screen simulator" or "abstruse menu exploration" because that's where you spend the majority of your time... The Bethesda formula is old and tired, and this game simply feels dated.

All in all it’s very unfortunate that the game doesn’t live up to the hype and already am going back to no man’s sky for that seem less traversal as well as BG3 for a superior RPG experience. If you have game pass, whynot give it a go but in my 40+hrs of gameplay I was left wanting a lot more in the next evolution of video games.

It definitely has a potential. They need to fix bugs, add the possibility to manually fly between the planets, not just fast travel. They need to improve graphics (I know they still use the old engine, but why would consumer care?). They need to improve the AI

Currently it's a terrible medium game that is not worth 60$. But I believe they can improve it and it will be 8/10

Carrying too much will kill you, but the inventory is a nightmare, tried modding the game just to make the systems work and it it still was so complicated that after two days I couldn't manage to do the thing I wanted to. You don't build characters so much as have pointless skills that you will be forcing yourself through just so you can have a conversation with someone, or attempt to play the game a certain way. Whole buildings in the game are completely recycled on other planets too, to the point where I was able to shoot people without even seeing them because I knew they would be there. Also the story feels bare bones, the characters you play with are mostly lifeless, possibly written by an AI? If you want to play a walking simulator because you have too much money there's Death Stranding. If you want to play space exploration there's No Man's Sky. This game is way too expensive for what it is, and is sadly lesser than the games (from this very developer) before it. Sometime it looks pretty though.... Sometimes. Expand

Also for animation wouldn't the studio win prices and here is also a game that has the well know wooden animations for the characters you meet. It's the same old engine they used for all their games and the engine team lacks the technical expertise or ambition to make a better engine.
What this game is in comparison to their previous titles is that it's bigger. That unfortunately doesn't mean that it's better. Whenever you go and "explore" one of the 1000 planets you will be met with a copy of a handful of stations where the same enemies on the same locations will do the same you have seen on other planets. It's makes exploring shockingly dull and repetitive.
The promise of exploration is clearly a lie as the game is divided in procedurally created tiles. Where modern games stream those tiles on the go here you have to fast travel to the next panel. It doesn't work well as it break the emersion. Even space is a tile.
Every tile and interior gets you a loading screen. In 2023 you expect instant loading but no you have to wait up to 5 seconds and it happens all the time.
Is everything bad? No the story is fine and the side missions are sometimes even good but like everything with this game it's done much better in other games. The shooting is the best Bethesda ever put in their RPG's but that is a low bar and don't expect to play a great shooter, it's serviceable.
Not counting Fallout 76 this is the worst rpg Bethesda released and I can't advice you to spent your money or time on.

Honestly. The game is just not fun. You spend most of your time either looking at loading screens or in the 100 menus. NPC are very dumb and don't add anything to the experience. Gunplay is alright but unfortunately fights are very repetitive. There is no exploration which would be fine if the rest of the game had any substance. It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
