Fantastic game. Black Ops made me quit the multiplayer scene, so it's nice to see this more like MW2. Thought I would give the game a fair chance so I decided to buy it and I didnt have any expectations. The odd thing is that the game even failed to entertain me and that's without talking about all the 12 years old boys I keep hearing on the game...

After the supreme disappointment that was Modern Warfare 2, developer Infinity War decided to release the latest in the long line of map packs in the Call of Duty franchise. Actually, pardon me, this isn't a map pack. Oh no, this is "much more than that." This game features an incredibly lengthy single player mode that can be beaten in a little over 5 hours! Wow! The game also has the returning Spec Ops mode that is no where near as addicting as Black Ops Zombie mode, and, let's not forget, the multiplayer mode.

Did you enjoy the perks, level-up system, and guns of the previous Call of Duty games? Well, they're back, and just the same as ever. No innovation has been brought to the plate this time, and Infinity Ward has opted to go with the good 'ol "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. The maps are all incredibly small, some of which are comparable in size to a backyard. The maps encourage camping and lack the epic scope that other FPS multiplayer maps offer.

But you know what? Infinity Ward should be commended for creating the CoD Elite system, where you can keep track of your various stats from previous matches you partook in. This is CLEARLY an innovative system that not many FPS' offer nowadays (*cough* Halo and Battlefield *cough*). Not only that, but you can also choose to give Infinity Ward your credit card information so you can get each map pack released within the next 12 months! This is obviously a sweet deal, since each map pack will cost $15 anyways if purchased separately. And each map pack will contain 4-5 shallow maps that don't encourage any new tactics different from the maps that come included with the game.

So all this for only #60? Why, it's a steal! It's not like I've already played this SAME EXACT GAME twice before already! Infinity Ward obviously spent the past two years crafting the best multiplayer FPS available. It's not innovative, it's repetitive, it doesn't reward clever tactics, and it offers an extremely shallow single player mode. BUT! It has multiplayer, complete with lag, hit-detection issues, and overpowered guns! What more could a pre-pubescent 13 year old boy ask for this Christmas?

That aside, the main reason that this game got a 5 is the story mode. if the online play was better, i would have no issues giving this game a higher rating; the fact is that the online is unacceptable. the re-spawn algorithm/coding is quite possibly the worst that i have ever seen, in any FPS. the graphics are poor, the game engine is recycled, and the audio is garbage. I have enjoyed CoD since the beginning, but this game feels stale. The movement animations are still fluid and crisp, but the entire game platform is simply a rinse and repeat. This series peaked at the original modern warfare and has been slowly declining since. the campaign has the feel of last-nights-leftovers, but in this day and age, originality and creativity are gone. As for the online play, there is always a xbox error, host migration, glitch, etc, that is hindering the online. if you want a better campaign, buy this. if you want better online. buy battlefield. I honestly can't believe the poor reviews on here for this game.

I love this game partly for many of the reasons that it is getting negative reviews. I'm spending £40 on this game so I like the fact that to a certain level I fully knew what I was getting for my money. These same people would go through the roof if Infinity Ward completely changed it and they didn't like it.

Comparing it to Battlefield 3 is also pointless since the only thing that is similar is that they are both first person shooters.

As for why I love this game, it looks fantastic, plays at a fast and frantic pace and you are always in the thick of the action. The guns are great, I especially love the Type 95 which is basically the new FAMAS. I enjoy the majority of the levels with Outpost being a standout. I'm looking forward to seeing how Elite will work it to. In summary, it is more of the same from Infinity Ward but that same is far superior than anything else out there.

Look back at those 8-bit games, those were pretty fun, and are still fun. Look at pac-man, not very good graphics, quite linear but very fun and addicting. The Modern Warfare engine has been working fine previously, so for them to change not only will it cause unexpected glitches, and problems(suddenly changing things never ends well...need I remind you the javelin glitch, and care pack glitches in Modern Warfare 2?) The only problems I have with this game so far(playing over 100 games I think I can give an accurate review) would have to be spawn points, theatre mode, sniping, shottys, scavenger, the Osprey gunner/Escort drop, advanced UAV. First off the spawn points need some massive fixing. The spawn points are just horrendous. I died by a guy, and spawned into his crosshairs. I also killed a guy only for him to appear behind me. That's just ridiculous. Secondly theatre mode needs tweaking, a lot of tweaking to be exact. Here are some problems I've experienced, and heard of. 1. When you record and open a laptop it records the laptop, not the kill streak used. 2. Clips get cut off if they go on for too long, there was a private game I was doing testing various things and it cut off at 27 minutes. Mind you I was testing a lot of things using the drop zone game type. 3. When you're recording and you pause it at a certain point and begin recording again, when you playback it pauses after when you actually paused it. 4. It would be cool if you could see the scoreboard during theatre mode like in Black ops, it's useful when you want to do commentaries and show your score. And lastly letting us see 1st person from other peoples perspective would be nice, instead of seeing them in 3rd person. Just to see how they saw their demise. Now sniping needs to be de-buffed. In mw2 I wasn't that good in sniping, I'd go positive but I'd miss a couple times at times. In mw3 I just hit anywhere and it's instant death for that person, way to easy, and overpowered. I don't even always have to hit them, it could just skim them and they die. Now for shottys, they are really, really underpowered now. They hardly kill at close range I need to be like inches away from someone to kill them with a shotty now. I'm not saying let us kill them from across the map like the spas did in mw2. Just don't make us have to be close that we can count the hairs on his face. For Scavenger let us pick up equipment from dead enemies, even if it has to be scavenger pro, let us do it. Just picking up ammo, and having more mags is kind of useless. Equipment is needed, if we have multiple flank routes we need two claymores to cover ourselves. Have it like mw2 where you can only have two claymores set up. Don't let use resupply under barrels, just equipment. Now for the osprey gunner/Escort drop, I'm going to talk about these together since they are the same kind of killstreak basically. First Osprey gunner, for such a high amount of kills needed can you allow it deploy flares, or make it less impossible to spot? Allow it to move around, or be user controlled, make it less huge, etc. For the escort drop, don't let it be shot down make it liek the emergency airdrop in mw2 where it can't be destroyed. and make it take less time to come down and drop the packages, it shouldn't take so long that the game ends before it lands. And lastly the Advanced UAV, don't let people be undetected by it(it kind of ruins the point of using it) also don't let be able to be shot down or destroyed. For the amount of kills it needs, it should stay up it's whole duration without any complications. Other than that I'm pretty much fine with this game, and I know you can release updates to address these problems, even if it has to be gradual keep releasing updates it would be worth your while trust me. If you fix the problems a majority of the community has with this game they might respond more positively towards it and not criticize it as harshly. The problem is you hardly fully listen to the community and that's what causes each game to have a lot of the community become haters and just sit waiting for the newest COD game only to be let down again, and again. Addressing the issues people have will make that 3.1 user score become higher, towards maybe an 8.0 if not more. Also make game longer/require more kills, or at least have a different game type where games last for longer times for those who like long games. like needing 10,000 score for team deathmatch instead of only needing 7500. or you need to confirm 100 kills instead of 65 in kill confirmed. In my opinion, that's pretty **** pathetic doing this. Just cause a lot of people do not like your game for many extremely valid reasons doesn't mean you should **** about it. Look, if they really wanna make this happen, y doesn't Infinity Ward &/or Activision do what they do to the brain dead critics as they do to the brain dead fans of the series and pay them under the table so they can get a good enough review so dumb-asses who look at critic scores will actually buy the game.

That game for me gets a 9.5- 10 while this one gets a 6. I can honestly say tho that I wish I didnt get this game new. I also think sledge hammer studios ruined this title. It is similar to the way StarWars kotor 2, Devil may cry 2 and Socom Confrontation was butchered. As I previously stated do yourself a favor and get this used if u can. I've been playing this game - Campaign, Spec Ops and MP - since it released, and after thinking long and hard on it, all I can say is . . . meh. I just can't escape the feeling that this is really more of a DLC pack than it is a three-quel. In terms of the Campaign, the best way to put it would be that the long and the short of it is that it is too short. I just can't escape the feeling that this is really more of a DLC pack than it is a three-quel. In terms of the Campaign, the best way to put it would be that the long and the short of it is that it is too short. I finished it the same day I bought the game. While I realize that the trend - ill-advised, in my opinion - is to sacrifice single-player for the multi-player component, a single-player campaign that short is an insult. Especially when the playability value of the multi-player part of the game will be severly undercut by those individuals who find ways to cheat (and just to note, it took less than six hours for people to start hacking the MP). As far as the multi-player goes, it would seem that the devs chose to keep all the worst aspects of the past iterations (Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2) while doing nothing to improve the experience. Spawn kills? Check. Modders? Check. Knives with thirty-foot blades that can stab you from across the room? Check. Ridiculously underpowered weapons? You get the idea. Look, I have some familiarity with many of the weapons in the game, and I understand that an endless succession of one- or two-shot kills is less than enjoyable . . . but on the other hand, it also doesn't take almost an entire magazine from an M4 to kill someone. Nor do trained soldiers, especially soldiers who are supposed to be elite, let the muzzles of their weapons wander around like drunken sailors on shore leave when they're aiming or firing. Also, despite all the handy tips, the game does nothing to encourage teamwork, even in an MP mode like "Kill Confirmed" where the whole point is that the road to success lies in teamwork. Finally, and again despite the helpful tips, the game continues to lack any kind of cover or concealment mechanic. Just a tip to the devs, concealment is where the enemy can't see you, but can still shoot you (in older days that was called "reconnaissance by fire") and cover is where the enemy can neither see you nor shoot you - and there are actually very few weapons capable of putting rounds through masonry or reinforced concrete walls, and pistols most certainly can't. At best, Modern Warfare 3 is an okay shooter, especially if you think real warfare consists of running around like a maniac. The sad thing is, it could have been a great shooter if the devs had concentrated on making a good game rather than on regurgitating the mistakes of the last two MW installments. Expand

This game is very similar to MW2. That is not a bad thing. I played over 18 days of MW2's multiplayer and MW3 is the same with the annoying tatcis like overpowered noob tubes and OMA. Commando is gone but I have seen some Bs knife kills. I'm still upset that Call of Duty isn't running on Dedicated Servers. I'm tired of crappy hosts but the game is a must buy.

I honestly don't know why this game is scoring so low with other user reviews. This game is a sequel, as such it's going to build upon what the games before it had already laid down. It's not going to be a distinctly different game, and it shouldn't. If it was going to have completely different core mechanics and gameplay, then it wouldn't be a Call of Duty, it would be a new IP. On multiplayer, the tweaks such as Strike Packages, new perks & guns, weapon leveling, and new modes (Team Defender/Kill Confirmed) all do good to expand on the prior entries in the series for an overall good multiplayer. The campaign is much the same as the rest in the series, and anyone who thinks the campaigns in any Battlefield/Call of Duty game are a focus point doesn't really get why the game was made in the first place. It's a compliment to the game, but wouldn't hold on its own without multiplayer. Survival in Spec Ops is a great idea, but its biggest downfall is not allowing 4 players like the Zombies modes on the other Call of Duty's. These modes are best when a group of people get to coordinate to play....not just two people. Lastly, Elite seems like a good idea, but as of this writing, been plagued by server issues so it's hard to say how or what that will bring to the series. Overall, a fairly good entry in the series. This game is an incredible addition to the series, and I don't understand half of all the hate this game is receiving. People complain about how the game appears to be a "MW2 map pack" or a refurbished version of that game, but this rings true for many sequels and MW3 shouldn't be the only game chastised for this. People complain about how the game appears to be a "MW2 map pack" or a refurbished version of that game, but this rings true for many sequels and MW3 shouldn't be the only game chastised for this. A few recent titles that come to mind are Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, and Uncharted 3, all of which were great games in their own right, but brought very few innovations to the single player / multi player experience where as MW3 has brought a myriad of new ideas to the multi player experience.

If you consider the addition of the strike packages to the kill streak system, not to mention the new kill steaks themselves brings a new dynamic challenge to the multi player experience. The support package allows for more tactical and team based game play, a fix to a common complain that the call of duty series was simply an "arcade run and gun shooter". New multi player game modes such as kill confirmed also support the new team based play styles the franchise is supporting. Horde mode has been introducted to the series, and while it lacks the 4 player experience other titles have had, it is a good first attempt for the series. A big problem is that many people consider the treyarch and infinity ward / sledgehammer games versions of Call of duty to be synonymous, where as veterans of the series can attest that this is not the case. The new additions to MW3 may have existed in Black Ops, but it is new to this franchise and thus worth noting. Split screen multi player is another new addition that makes LAN parties with your friends a much easier experience. While the wager matches have been moved to strictly private match and LAN parties, they have added new modes such as Juggernaught which adds a new dynamic to this experience as well. Last but not least the returning mode of Spec Ops has been revamped and improved upon. The campaign provides the same sort of evocative and emotional storytelling and game play that many modern shooters lack and skip over, and provides an adequate conclusion to the epic story that began back in 2007. Overall Modern Warfare 3 is a superb shooter overall, and provides more innovations to the experience than the last Call of Duty installation Black Ops. This game does not deserve all the hatred it receives, and this reader suspects it is perpetrated mostly by internet trolls and active members of the Battlefield 3 community. As a final note I will leave you with this, if you don't like sequels being similar to their successful predecessors don't buy them; Modern Warfare 2 was an amazing game that broke sales records both within and outside the gaming industry, and as such the plan of improving upon an already successful game by keeping its roots and adding new innovations make sense to me.

But in my opinion MW3 was nothing more than a modern warfare 2 expansion pack that at best should have been sold at no more than $39.99 if that. The graphics, while decent, were slightly up from MW2 and of course for the battlefield 3 faithful they will say its no where close which is absolutely true. But of course graphics is not the main draw for any game... what good is graphics if the game just sucks? MW3 does provide a decent balanced multiplayer which to me is the most balanced to date. The lag is minimal and the net code seems to be great with awesome hit detection.. BUT there are some weapon balance issues that need to be work on with a patch. The campaign is very predictable but does keep the pace decent to keep you entertain but dont expect any OMG moments. The campaign is also short which if you are a average player expect to breeze through with about 4-5 hours of gameplay.. longer on harder difficultites maybe of course. Bugs were minimal throughout my playthrough so it was a tightly knit experience with maybe some AI issues here and there but nothing out the ordinary. Speaking on AI in MW3.. nothing has really changed.. constant spawn until you move up or clear an objective but this is not a tactical game.. its basically an extreme rail shooter.. and it does it well. So with that being said.. if you go into this game just expecting a decent fun time with great multiplayer moments with friends you may be pleased.. IF you fell for the marketing hype and the "biggest launch in video game history" you will most likely be disappointed when you pop in the game and have a play-through. Its not a bad game at all.. but its nothing innovative. It is a modern warfare 2 expansion pack for 59.99. Kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth. And finally to the prestigious online mode which is already one of the best in the market now is better, with a feel of both modern warfare 1 and 2, 3 offers a player now a larger range of gameplay through the use of the newly formed strike packages giving players the ability to use a range of different kill streaks that will help their type of player. This game also offers an huge amount of challenges giving the player a big sense of achievement when his/her screen displays the players achievements and gains titles and emblems to show offer furthermore the bigger range of camo's that can be earned also giving the player more bragging rights. simply a great conclusion to a great franchise!

Modern Warfare and MW2 were both very innovative games and it can be easily argued that they changed the console FPS genre forever. The graphics do hold up still, the engine is fine, and multiplayer is still fun. The game is good. The reason everyone is angry is because they expected more from IW, and so did I. Still, I've poured a lot of hours into this game already and I don't regret it, but people seem to think that just because it's not completely innovative means the game warrants a 0/10. Expand

I only played single player, so my remarks are confined to that aspect of the game. I enjoyed the continuation of the storyline in the single player campaign. Storyline has always been a hallmark in this series, and COD:MW 3 continues in this regard. The storyline was much, much better that Battlefield 3's.

For a game that has garnered critical praise and broke records, this game just goes to show the "Madden Effect." Every year, same old game, little to no innovation. While the only redeeming quality of the game is the campaign which is the best of the trilogy, I cannot stress the moments where I paused a bit and thought to myself, "I've done this before or I've seen this before." The multiplayer is largely intact as it was in MW2 but I can't help but say that the maps just feel wrong and for some off reason, recycled from past games. Spec Ops will kill some time but you can only go so far with it. Survival only goes to show that games will borrow just about anything to make themselves more content rich but if I wanted this kind of game mode I would stick to Gears of War, but that's just me. Perks, maps, weapons and killstreaks all make a return but only with a few additions. Here is my opinion to sum up this criticism in case this has become boring. I did my best not reveal any spoilers.

Is this game good? Depends when you came into COD. For the vets of COD, it's a mixed bag.

Is it worth its value? No, I would've definitely bought this as a $20-30 expansion instead of a full fledged price tag of $60. Should I get it? I'd say if you're interested, rent it first before you buy it. To sum it all up: If you're new to the series or played the other MW games and don't mind the fact you're paying $60 for an expansion then go ahead and buy it. If you're like me, who's beginning to notice the Madden Effect in this once very popular franchise, then rent it but don't have too many great expectations, you may come away disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MW3 is an add-on to a controversial series such as it's predecessors. The game brings back all the things that we love and love to hate about Call of Duty. I will review the three modes (Campaign, Spec Ops and Multiplayer) into different categories and review, since it's what they deserve.
Campaign - The campaign takes after the events of Modern Warfare 2 and continues with a slightly new cast which includes Captain Price, Soap and Makorav, and also some new characters like the men in the delta team and Yuri. (An ex-spetsnaz) I was disappointed with the story compared to the last installment. (Call of Duty Black Ops) The ending wasn't as good either, I feel it wasn't much as a ending as it was a thing the storyboard writers written when it hit 12 am. Spec Ops - Spec Ops was a mode that was added two years ago in Modern Warfare 2, I found that I enjoyed playing the missions in Spec Ops enjoyable to play. When i played the original missions I got bored really easily bored, but the missions in Mw3 were revamped and the layouts and objectives were reasonable and fun, especially with a friend.
Multiplayer - Fun, but it didn't live up to my expectations for a good game. It (Like many other fans say) is a edited version of the Modern Warfare 2 system. I found it fun, but it could have been WAAY better. I have to give Raven Software credit however, the made a decent multi-player in which people can't get addicted to it. I will add my scores together:
3 points - Campaign - It added a mediocre ending to the mediocre series, I thought it was good enough however to get a three. 4 points - Spec Ops - The added missions and survival mode are a huge part of the replayability in this game, I love it! So I will give it four points.
1 Point - Multiplayer - I give it a one because It's nearly the exact same system as before with absolutely no risks taken for the ending part of the series. The only thing difference is a little bit better graphics and a touch of new guns, and some poorly made maps. I will only give it a one because it's RS' first time at a COD multiplayer mode.

Granted the story line could be better, but it is a great way to carry on from the MW2 end, and (IMO) actually fun. That's what I love in a game, its not how technically amazing it is, or the realism of the storyline (seeming as this is not set now it is still realistic), it is just the pure fun of playing it. I love playing through the story because it just is fun to see what happens next, and the fact that this is possible to happen (though more dulled down) also (for me) is good. I also love the fun of playing multiplayer either competitively, or just messing around with my friends. Fun is what I look for, seems you guys just want to play a game, decide you hate it, tell other people not buy it and enforce your opinion, then play it some more so you can become top of your friends. If you want some fun and a pretty good storyline, this game is great. Though I would buy it at a cheaper price, I got this with 25% off. Besides I disagree with hype around games that are expensive, just buy them after a couple of months or so and they wil become cheaper.

Brilliant game love it. I play games for a laugh and a bit of fun, call of duty brings all of that. Multiplayer is better than ever. The story is fun and is cheesy as ever. I like a game that i can pick up and play for half an hour or five hours. I have bought both MW3 and BF3 and this is by far the best. Wow if i had the choice of either playing BF3 or reading and writing comments about MW3 i suppose i would be here with the hundreds of you BF3 fans as it is Rubbish. BF2 was better. Doesnt matter how many 0's you give it will prob be biggest selling game of year and thus most played. 10/10 easily Expand

I am ashamed at all of these haters. Think of the game in a professional way, it provides copius amounts of gameplay for copius amounts of people. Activision don't give **** about your reviews, and why should they. MW3 is (as of the review date) on 90 metacritic score. And rightly so. MW3 is (as of the review date) on 90 metacritic score. And rightly so. All of the things that angered me and a lot of people about Modern Warfare 2 have been adressed and changed and the new interface is refreshing. The campaign is just amazing, with nothing new or revolutionary offered, but something that we have all come to love and expect from the series. Anybody who hates this game because of what their friends say, or because of this pointless feud between BF3 and MW3 or just because they think it's **** is a sheep and SHOULD be disregarded. 88/100. Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
