On with the review. The campaign picks up almost immediately after MW2, and it's bang bang, boom boom start to finish. You toss in U.S. Army's Delta Squad in the battle for New York, then on to France, Germany, UK, it starts to feel like the COD we remember from the WWII shooter era. The problem, is other than Soap, Price, Makarov, and company we have seen since the original MW series started, all the other characters feel very disconnected, I found it extremely difficult to connect with any of the Delta, SAS, GIGN, or any other organization portrayed. But our heroes from MW, and MW2, are back. I wont give away the story or any plot points, but it ties the series up nicely, and ends it, no cliff hanger, no BS, the story ends, but it just didnt feel satisfying, now mind you, I don't know how you can turn up the heat any higher than 11, but other than the Price/Soap/Makarov characters, I was just shooting anything that was on the other end of the hallway.

The multiplayer is a level of balance not seen since the first MW game, the GL's have been toned down, the maps feel much less claustorphobic, and much less obvious choke points. Yes, the other team can still pin you down if they are effective, but that effectiveness degrades quite a bit. I still found myself spawning next to the guy who just killed me, or stabbed in the back by the guy I just killed, and am still performing the reload for, but even thats small potatoes. You will spend much of the first portions of multiplayer getting award after award, and it's nearly rapid fire, but it feels like a ploy to keep you interested rather than actually award you for an accomplishment. It is still satisfying when you hear the noise, or rank up, but when you see some of the reasons as to why you got the award, you just think to yourself "THAT was it?".

Our friendly neighborhood Nuke is gone, all the modes are in tact, including a new super addictive Kill Confirmed mode, everytime you get a kill, you collect dog tags from your enemy, however, you begin to wonder if risking your own head is worth it when you see the golden tag in front of your face, when some jerk with a rocket launcher is waiting on you to go for it, or should you get the red tags and save your team the death point? I find it fun, and keeps me focused for hours.

I was lucky enough to get the game before a lot of people stateside got it home (Japan), I spent the first few hours or so thinking I was hot stuff killing everything that moved. After work ended, I got a really nasty awakening, aside from continual deaths and frustration, screaming kids were back to let me know what they were planning on doing with my mother that particular evening, and how much these puny voices claimed they could pound me to a bloody pulp if they saw me in person, yep, MW is back, and mom didnt look at the ESRB rating again.

I don't hate MW, or any Modern Combat games, they are well done, and polished well. I was more turned off by MW3 that within the first 3 hours of playing online, I ran into 6 hosts that were cheating/hacking/exploiting, 8 people were ALREADY 10 prestige, and maxxed out all around, and the leaderboards had already been screwed with.

One more note, I am disappointed that COD Elite service to date (21 November) has been either hit or miss, or just broken. The companies know how wildly popular this series is, but they werent "prepared" for the overload? What did they think was going to happen? To the biggest entertainment launch in history, great work, now please go back to the drawing board, and get something new out there.

The Special Ops aren't anything ground breaking, and survival is a welcomed addition, but after a few games of both you'll grow tired of them quickly. That leaves the us with the multiplayer, this is the bread and butter of CoD games. This is where you will spend countless hours fragging friends, and foes alike. The only problem is that MW3's multiplayer is arguably worse then previous installments overall. Sure, some things they do tight, such as the perk rebalancing, and gun leveling, but gameplay-wise it is a step backwards. Spawns are bad at best, maps aren't memorable, after 3 installments they still have failed to give us a proper system link option and private game options, which are vital to competitive CoD, they did away with the dive from Black Ops. I feel that if you really are a fan of what CoD is all about, the multiplayer, then you might-as-well stick with Black Ops, as it already has quality maps, very polished gameplay, and an overall better multiplayer experience. Disappointing sums MW3 up nicely. The trailers made it look like it was shaping up to be one of 2011's best games. Instead we got MW2 with a couple of add-ons. Multiplayer, is well MW2, it's the exact same, plays the same, looks the same but it does have some different kill streaks which is a positive. I gave MW3 a 6 purely for the story, it was compelling and it was just a really good story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MW3 is an awful game. Simple as that. After watching the MP briefing at CoD XP, i really believed that this latest instalment could, at least, breath life into this stale franchise. However, MW3 is merely a lazy, copy and paste effort of MW2. In fact, everything in MW3 is a massive expansion pack, which could easily have been added into its predecessor, with nothing new or innovative added.
MW3's story picks up where MW2 left off with Captain John 'Soap' Mactavish fighting for his life after getting stabbed and left for dead and the continuation of the Russian invasion of the United States. Vladimir Makarov, the mastermind of the invasion, is still at large after his escape at the end of MW2 and the hunt for him takes you to various locations across the world from the East Coast of the US to mainland Europe and Africa as you view the conflict through the eyes of various characters.
The game's presentation, while not terrible in anyway, is quite unremarkable. The game is identical to MW2, in terms of visuals and gameplay. You'll still get massive firefights and giant action set pieces but for those who've played previous titles in the series (which would be most of you) you will find nothing special. The voice acting, however, is generally very good with Billy Murray and Kevin McKidd putting in fantastic performances once again as the iconic protagonists Captain John Price and Captain Soap MacTavish. Craig Fairbrass, who voiced Gaz and Ghost in MW1 and 2 respectively, also returns to voice Sergeant Wallcroft of the British SAS (who had a minor role in MW1). However, much to my disappointment (and to the disappointment of others i'm sure), Fairbrass' role is extremely minimal compared to his previous roles. William Fichtner and Timothy Olyphant also put in decent performances as Delta Force operatives Sandman and Grinch. The soundtrack by Brian Tyler is also good, however it lacks that epic feel that Hans Zimmer expertly delivered with his score in MW2. However, Hans Zimmer is in a league of his own so to compare him with other composers is massively unfair.
Gameplay in MW3 is frustratingly similar to past entries. Usually this involves things like fight your way towards destroying objectives to rescuing hostages to defending locations. Its become too familiar and doesnt represent a satisfying challenge. In fact I completed the SP campaign on veteran difficulty in 3 days with relative ease as the gameplay mechanics have become so overused to the point where it becomes so predictable. Spec ops returns and, as before, can be fun for a short while but there is no real reason to play multiple times once you get every star. Survival mode, a new mode in which you defend yourself from infinite waves of enemies, works just fine in MW3 but is hardly innovative as it has been seen in many other franchises. The MP is where the game really disappoints. Robert Bowling, community manager of Infinity Ward, promised that the MP was more balanced than before. This is true to some extent. Certain perks which overpowered players such as OMA and commando have been removed. Perks that gave players power advantages such as stopping power and danger close are also gone. Familiar perks such as Sleight of Hand and Steady Aim have been tweaked to allow pro variants that better complement and balance its base variant e.g. SoH Pro allows faster weapon swapping as opposed to faster aiming. Shotguns are thankfully primary weapons once more and the game ending nuke doesn't return. This means that there is more focus on gun on gun gameplay that relies more on skill than perks and less reliance on air support to do the work for you. However, the same frustrating problems still exist. For starters, the matchmaking system is awful as ever. Playing team games is an extremely frustrating affair as the same gung-ho, lone wolf style of play remains, where players care more about their KDR rather than playing the objective. Even with the new pointstreak system, where you are rewarded with points for taking out air support and capturing objectives as well as racking up kills, you will still find players who play solely for kills rather than objectives. Is it really that difficult to go to TDM to improve your KDR? Even in TDM you will find bad players who don't know they're doing and will often lose matches for you. Camping exists tenfold in all game modes, mainly due to the poor map design as well as the inclusion and abuse of the blind eye and assassin perks which render you immune to air support and recon devices. Stealth is perfectly fine but using it to camp is game breaking. The terrible spawn system, which has marred the last 2 titles, has returned along with the awful hit detection which makes for a frustrating experience overall. If you're looking for a rewarding shooter get Battlefield 3 instead or perhaps get Call of Duty 4 the last great CoD game

And personally I thought Gears 3 was less than amazing, But I have had some fun on Call Of Duty games, for all the inevitable frustration that goes with them. I'll admit, my favourite was World At War, but I played COD 4 enough and spent some time on Modern Warfare 2 before I got distracted by something else and never came back. I will say I wasn't really interested in the campaign. Despite completing COD 4 and MW2 I can't really remember much at all and I'm not a big fan of this kind of on rails campaign anyway. I doubt I'll ever complete this one with Skyrim and even Saints Row: The Third still to be played. The new Spec Ops modes are entertaining enough, though. At least it wasn't zombies again, right? And even if you liked the zombies, at least they're not charging you money for the same old zombies mode (at least for now,) right? Anyway, multiplayer is exactly what I expected; Modern Warfare 2, more or less. As a casual COD player I can't really tell the difference. And by reading this, I'm guessing you kind of fit into the same crowd. Don't get me wrong, it plays well enough and it's still worth some fun but it's nothing new and it still has the same set of problems, especially with not using dedicated servers... I know people have ranted about that fact since it was released, but it is annoying. The weapons roster consists of exactly the guns you could have guessed... AK, M16, etc. They're 'customised' in the same ways. But as mediocre an offering as Black Ops was, at least it had a crossbow and a **** axe to mix things up a bit. The maps aren't great either. They mostly look cool but they're not a lot of fun. I can understand the phrase 'if it ain't broke don't fix it,' but I would have used something more along the lines of 'not bad, not perfect' to describe the last few games, and that's definitely true this time around as well. I'll give it a 6, because while it's still good enough to exceed mediocrity, it's nothing amazing or even new. I'll still play it until I get bored, but sadly I can already feel it'll be collecting dust on a shelf in my local CeX soon enough. Expand

Big deal. Weapon levels? Who cares. Sounds like IW's version of the Madden hit stick. And as for being the most balanced CoD yet, I say boo. Ever hear of the Type 95 IW? Someone dropped the ball on balancing that thing out. Essentially MW3 is nothing more then a really big expansion pack for Modern Warfare 2. I mean if you really really liked MW2 then this is the game for you, but after awhile don't you get tired of the same old thing? Everything is more or less the same. I hate to break it to you Activision but Battlefield has for sure set up shop in your town. And they mean to get bigger and better. I suggest you stop milking this cow and start with some major effin overhaul of your flagship game or you're going to have another Guitar hero on your hands. Yes, a lot of people will still be playing MW3 and they will buy and play the next CoD but rest assured the movement has begun. The world is catching on to you and it will only get worse from here on out unless you do something about it. As for Call of Duty Elite: what a waste of money. The only part of the game I enjoyed was the story line and that was only because it distracted me from the shocking multi player. In my opinion the multi player on mw3 is worse than any of it's predecessors. The first thing to note is the maps, which are either ridiculously small or way too big with about a million objects for people to camp or hide in. Then we have the shockingly over powered weapons... In black ops, u at least had a second to react if you came under fire, whereas in this u literally see the small red marker from the direction you have been shot from and then u find ur self dead... To add insult to injury they have also reduced the power of weapons like the grenade launcher and rockets so you can pretty much walk away from a direct hit. Oh and u also have sniper bullets that can kill 2-3 people with 1 shot one minute, then just bounce off when u hit someone directly in the chest the next. And just like everyone else has mentioned, I'm sure we all love respawning in front of the guy who just killed us so that we can get killed again... So overall if ur thinking of buying this game dont, and if you have, take it back as soon as you can before its only worth a tenner and Uve lost loads of cash and hours of life you'll never get back. Spawning twice in front of the same person that killed you-spawn again take 5 steps on a bouncing betty- spawn get a kill to only get killed from behind. The sound is also a another issue the footsteps are so muffled that it seems like everyone has the dead silence perk on. It seems like the developers made every effort to slow the pace of the game down. -no unlimited running. longer weapon switches. Its a baby shooter not worth the money i paid for it Expand

Same old douchebag formula. A highly predictable plot, straight out of hollywood's most unexciting summer blockbusters, and a multiplayer where the 13 year old obese gets their chance to shine, with his trusty sniper rifle in hand and a perfect bush to hide in. Congratulations Activision, you managed to make millions off of human stupidity yet again!

Agreed with all the previous reviews posted about this game. Its basically a MW2.5 trying to looks more realistic by competing with BF3 but fails completly with the graphics. (not a fan of BF series either)
The campaign is forgettable if not unplayable and boring, you can literally run through the game fire a couple shots and be done with it in the time it would take to watch a football

The campaign is forgettable if not unplayable and boring, you can literally run through the game fire a couple shots and be done with it in the time it would take to watch a football game. But I think if you asked most players they would say they buy the game for the multiplayer aspect of it not the campaign. The MP is the same normal shooter you would expect from the COD series, yet this one has a darker color scheme. My problem with is is hackers or boosters and Sledgehammer or Activision doesnt do squat to fix it. The hit detection is generous, spawn killing is rampant and boosting is just as frivolent. I get more frustrated playing the MP on MW3 then any other game. For example, having Assassin Pro on the enemy shouldnt see your name or their reticle should not turn red. Well guess that doesnt work cause croutched in the shadows with a silenced weapon and Assassins pro perk on they were able to long shot me from across the map with a Assault rifle. The big question is how can they possibly see you if you cant see yourself on their kill cam??? Well I spent time in forums and boards you can find exploits for the radar and aimbots online already which really ruins the MP experience. Seriously, take the time to "google" hacks or exploits for MW3 you wills ee videos and a bunch of stuff which helps people cheat and boost. Activision should get their crap together, if you want a decent multiplayer game go play Gears of War 3 or go back to Black Ops its not as frustrating as this garbage......

I know MW3 isn't made from the same people as Black Ops, but MW3 took so many steps backwards from Black Ops. This game doesn't innovate. The campaign's entire formula consisted of:

The sound, the spectacle of it all was off the charts. and this is something that has gotten bigger and better as the series has gone on. Not many first person shooters have changed the wheel over the years and i never MW3 to do it so i got was i was expecting. I understand where the frustration comes with regard to multiplayer. It hasn't changed a great deal. Kill Confirmed and some of the new killstreaks are a nice addition but it is essentially the same thing. But if you bought this game purely to play multiplayer than that is your own fault for being dissapointed. You should have bought battefield 3 which hasn't got any hate compared to MW3 and the campaign in that game put me to sleep. The graphics were incredible but the rest of it just doesn't hold up to the MW series. So yea i gave it an 8.0. and i think that is accurate. anyone new to the series would be blown away by what MW3 has to offer (campaign or otherwise). and veterens to the series know what they are getting and last i checked millions are playing it. CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3 IS A GOOD GAME. FALLS SLIGHTLY SHORT FROM BEING A GREAT GAME BUT FAR FROM A BAD GAME

There has been a lot of mixed opinions and a lot of hate on here. I am giving my honest unbiased opinion The main reason for the hate is the lack of innovation seen in the last few call of duty's which is no different here. This game does the same job as black ops did, its more or less a refined version of MW2. However some see this as a bad thing and some see it as a good thing. The lack of innovation is disappointing which leaves it short from being a great game, but its still a good game and far from a bad game. The controls remain mostly unchanged since cod4, but they still remain to be the fps shooter controls around. The graphics are solid, they arnt groundbreaking but they are not bad either. The FPS is excellent as usual with the modern warfare series. The sound however is rather hit and miss and overall quite disappointing. The voice acting most of the time is great, but at times can actually be a little bit inconsistent as their tone of voices change irrelevantly at times to the situation you are in. The music is typical modern warfare series music, which is a rather dramatic movie music. The major flaw i think in the sound however is the guns, they all sound very similar and sound rather tinny, the sound effects of explosions, guns, etc are very disappointing, when in previous call of duty's the sound was good or always at least on par.

Single Player: Is a good campaign, not great though just good. There are moments there that really do blow you away and are as epic as it comes in a game, but then there are parts that are boring and predicable. I would say this campaign is as good as the CoD 4 campaign however nothing will ever beat the moment when that nuke went off unexpectedly. The voice acting and characters are great, but at time the voice acting can be poor, in the sense of when major things happens the typical call of duty was its just so fast paced that you don't get time to appreciate what is going on. The story's pacing is just poor, you are all over the place, going to different locations over the world instantly and it often feels like youve skipped a mission or some soft of cut scene, its just too fast paced to be able to seriously follow the storyline. (Im not talking about gameplay wise) Spec Ops: Is a refreshing new mode that takes us away from Treyarch's hit Zombies. Its not really innovative though, it seems like its just copied from a lot of other co op mode games *cough gears of war*, It is however a great fun mode, that is an alternative to zombies. However Zombies still remains to be the better co op mode, but Spec ops Survival has potential to become as good as zombies. There just isnt enough content and things to do as it stands, not enough upgrades to weapons, killstreaks and perks, and you dont get that sort of build you do with zombies where you have to get money to open doors, buy perks PaP etc, its almost just all there for you once you unlock them with the level progression system, which I thought would of been a good idea, but it isnt executed properly within survival mode i just think the leveling up just a bit of a gimmick. Don't get me wrong though the Spec Ops Survival mode is still great just a tad disappointing Multiplayer: Well in a nutshell its the same old.. that could either mean its a great thing to some or a bad thing to others. I am sort of stuck in between that crowd. I loved Mw2 and what they have done is kept the formuler but simply beef it up, better perks, point streak system and a complete balance of the guns including a good leveling up your gun system. Prestege shop. The new additions are certainly great, i love the perks, its the best call of duty for perks, i love the gun leveling, and I like the new pointstreak system, i also really like the two new modes kill confirmed and team defender. However playing 18days of mw2 is all this really enough to keep me playing mw3? In other words is a much more refined and improved mw2 but very similar, so if you didnt like mw2 chances are you wont like this, if you loved mw2 but hated the overpowered things in the game such as the killstreaks and guns+perk combos then you will love this, if you have grown tired of mw2 then this may get stale for you very quickly.

Modern Warfare 3 may not have many changes, but it's still a solid game. Let's start with the single player experience. It continues from when Modern Warfare 2 left off, with Makarov being the bad guy and Price and Soap trying to stop him doing bad stuff. Unfortunately, the single player for the Call of Duty series has really been demoted to a secondary exeprience, Multiplayer being the primary focal point. There's not a lot going on, World War 3 has come to the US, and you have to shoot a lot of Russian clones in the face while explosions happen everywhere. Sound familiar? The story is really like a Michael Bay movie, big and dumb with badass dudes yelling while jets and choppers and tanks make things go boom. I won't spoil anything, but really what happens in the story is gonna be forgotten as soon as you are done with it. It is a really short one too, as it took me just under 5 hours on normal. And you probably won't go back to play through it again unless you want those extra achievments you missed, wanna beat it on Veteran, or get the Intel collectible items. However, while single player falters, the multiplayer options are where the meat of the game truly is. Spec Ops has been more fleshed including a survival mode where 2 players shoot through wave of bad guys. Not really original, but is a bunch of fun with a friend. And it has a progressive unlock system just like the Multiplayer, so you'll spend lots of time on this mode. The multiplayer itself is still a good one, with some changes. There is now Strike pakages, and they determine how you get your pointstreaks. Yes, Pointstreaks, because now capturing objectives and destroying enemy equipment and planes and choppers count toward your streak. Anyways, Assault is the familiar one with rewards tailored to missiles, and choppers, offensive rewards. Support is my personal favorite, me being a team player, where your streak doesn't get reset when you die, and you get more team based rewards like radars, recon drones and an Emp (I love this one). Specialist is a very odd one, as you get perks based on how high your streak gets, and which perks you decide to choose, so at 2 you might do Scavenger, then 4 is Blast shield or whatever. At 8 kills, you get all the perks that you have unlocked and get a bonus for each additional kill. If you get to that without dying, fun times. As always the weapons and perks are real interesting and has something for every type of player, and prestige mode is back for the hardcore to reset and level up again. There are some minor gripes about certain streak rewards, the choice of server type (still no dedicated servers?), and many other things. It can get frustrating when the whole other team camps and uses Quickscoping sniper tactics to get AC130's and Juggernaught armor. But that's about the players themselves, not the game's fault. In closing, while the single player falters, the multiplayer is very fun. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a must buy. There's nothing like playing and levelng up with your buddies together. Expand

(but hey they will probably charge you 15 dollars for a map pack of the same old maps again), guns are the same...the exact same sounds and rate of fire and damage, only difference is they put a new skin on it to trick the young idiot fans. Quickscoping is still possible, same with dropshotting which are some of the dumbest things you can do in a shooter.

now why does this game get a 0? well first its because the developers tweeted to give it a higher score, and i will not trick more people into thinking this game is any different than mw2. after comparing online reviews of this game and bf3, i saw a lot of inconsistencies... in some bf3 was criticized for being similar to bad company...when in fact it wasnt, but this game was given a 9 for "being super duper fun"

well i dont know what kind of fun they are talking about. cod games always play the same, every map ppl will do the same thing they always do, why? because there arent many options, u can easily predict what will happen each time, where the snipers are, where the campers re, and where the rushers will go.

as for innovation, there is none, it the same game....the.SAME.GAME! so activision, pelase get ur priorities in order and stop dishing out the same game every single year. make something new perhaps try CHANGING THE ANCIENT ENGINE YOU'VE BEEN USING FOREVER, and try adding some physics to the game. why i like bf3 over this is because each game crazy stuff happens due to all the possibilities that are given. you never get the same experience.

ive been hearing the problem with giving a game 0 is that cod actually works fine and is playable...well ya, but its also a full priced dlc, so i dont know why paying 59.99 for a texture change should not be a 0. it gets a 0 because its not even a game, its just a god damn add on.

Hrmmm, I wonder if it really was worth the price though. You see, this latest installment holds ZERO effort. Have you ever seen a modding community? Have you ever seen what they create? For free? Well, what modding communities do to games whose publishers respect and like their clientele enough to let out modding tools, holds (quite literally) INFINITELY more effort, skill, care, passion and craftsmanship than this 60$ MW2.5 you have sold me. I am going to directly assume that this is EXACTLY why you DON'T put developer tools in, well, ANY of your games. Because the efforts of 16 year olds, up past their bedtimes, would outshine your best developer anyday of the week. I am not going to lie and say that I or my family have not enjoyed it to some extent, we have. Much in the same sense that is someone sold me a chess set for $7000, I would probably enjoy it to some extent, yet be extremely unsatisfied. Not to mention this whole Elite tripe and the DLC f&^%fest that you have planned for us. 20 DLC a year? Wow, thats uhhh, what two and a half weeks to come up with content? What is this content supposed to be exactly? Will it be 15$ for a pink skin for my stock (the barrel being another DLC pack of course)? I would not be surprised at you. And how much of this content was ready at release of the game? If I were the soulless game-industry-destroying c*&^ in charge of managing this crap, I would say 6. 6 of your DLC were like prepared before release, in my thoughts, and that's what? Maybe years of living with douchebags has made me cynical, but as I started to look through all the undeservedly positive reviews on this site, going to the linked review page, I notice that your advertisement is at the top right of EVERY SINGLE MAJOR REVIEW SITE. Now I'm not saying that this is bribery, in and of itsself, but I am quite interested to hear when these advertising contracts were made, what are the terms of them and, indeed, would they have been removed should your game not have been given such an overwhelming positive review? I am quite certain they would have, and that metacritic would no longer have a link to it. BTW what is this mountain dew **** Im sure even your most loyal of 12 year old fanboys are pissed off by this bulls*&^

In closing, you are a bane on your industry

Your titles show developers that there is no need for innovation or work, if you're greedy enough.

Activision's stock is dropping, and I will have a great laugh, when everyone associated with your company, down to the lowliest intern, is blacklisted and will never work in the industry again. I wish upon you a swift bankruptcy followed by immediate foreclosure, then see you dicks try to pay $140 dollars for a single recycled game.

If i could return this to the store i would. I won't say i will never play a COD game again at all. If they update their engine to something up to par with several other actual FPS games adding their fun factor i bet it would rock and i would be addicted to it. The reason i am giving this a zero is that i am against major games with major budgets trying to milk the cash cow by being cheap! Expand

    Reasons I gave MW3 a 5.
    1) Why can i jump up on one dumpster but not a different one in the same map? Zero continuity, this problem has bugged me from mw2 and BO.
    2) I can run up over a ledge or something but a small object on the ground stops me dead in my tracks? Really! 3) Can I please just have a playlist that connects me to the fastest (lowest ping) game what ever that game is. > 125

The campaign is a rousing conclusion to the series, with some incredibly cinematic moments and a satisfying ending to the story and characters. The gameplay has a great level of diversity and though it does follow the usual aspects of the FPS, there is a lot more creativity in the level design and set pieces. The multiplayer is technically more of the same, but when you are talking about one of the most robust multiplayer games in the market that is not a complaint.

Look, I aim to look at games objectively. I am not going to rag on Battlefield 3, but I am going to say that its fans who give this game 0's and low scores without a good reason why other than "it's more of the same" need to get a life. Battlefield 3 is ALSO more of the same, as it follows not only the same principles of previous Battlefield games but also the standard ALL FPS games do! A game does not have to be 100% revolutionary to feel fresh and new. Battlefield 3 can still be a good game and Modern Warfare 3 can still be a good game. Where you lean towards more is just a matter of preference. Me? I prefer superior single player to superior multiplayer any day so I lean more towards Modern Warfare 3.

If you were to come into the game from a completely neutral standpoint, having never played any COD game before, you'd likely think I was crazy. The game is at least solid, and has no major gamebreaking glitches. For most of us here however, that's just not the case. I started my COD experience on MW2, and it didn't take me long to figure out that OMA Tubing was the way to go. The game was severely broke due to this, yet nothing was ever done to fix it. A simple patch could have been released that would have fixed this in a variety of different ways, but never did. It infuriated me that they pushed DLC but never took just a little time and fixed the gameplay itself - I guess there was no money in that since people were taking in the DLC hook, line, and sinker. To me it's comparable to putting rims on a car that won't start. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. When Black Ops came out I let my friend buy it to see what it was like. Although the tubes were not infinite, the maps were still small and corridor based. They left in last stand, and the p2p latency issues persisted - including the dashboarding. If you're not aware, on the Xbox 360 if the host hits the guide button and then hits Y to go to the dashboard, it will drop the game and not migrate host. Spawning was still terrible, too, with people spawning behind you or vice versa. I had my share of unfair spawns on the enemy and I just cringed as I knifed them in the back after spawning less than 5 - 10 feet behind them, knowing that the same would later happen to me. Anyhow, this is a review of MW3 and it is pretty much the same as MW2. If you ask someone who plays MW2 and MW3 they may say the difference is night and day, and I'm sure it can be since comparisons are always relative of the scope. If you open up the comparison to include all games, the two are nearly identical. Sure there are no infinite tubes and the killstreaks are different, but what else? The core gameplay is completely unchanged, to include the horrible spawning from MW2 and Black Ops. And unfortunately the maps are actually getting smaller. Sniping was never great in MW2 except for possibly quickscoping, which is just a childish concept anyhow. Now that the maps keep getting smaller it is getting ever more useless.

I have not played the campaign. I did play the MW2 campaign and from what I've read the MW3 campaign is pretty much the same. If you thought the MW2 campaign was good, then... you should probably do a swan dive onto cement. It was so bad it nearly made my brain explode just playing through it - and that's just the silly over-dramatic cutscenes. The gameplay is quite honestly the most childish, unbelievable, super-charged piece of trash I've ever played. I don't know how much experience any of the kids that play it have had with the military, but as a veteran I am appalled. Some of the missions from MW2 would have you running and gunning as one man killing nearly a hundred other soldiers. All with completely scripted events and no real need for tactics. Pathetic. If you want to play a FPS that has a good single player campaign on the Xbox 360, then play Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. It's $20 on games on demand, and worth every penny. Do not confuse it with Operation Flashpoint: Red River, which is in fact a fresh steaming turd.

So after having played MW3 it didn't take me long to realize what they are doing is actually just trying to cycle out a game every year like sports games. I suppose they realized what a cash grab those were and that there was an audience dumb enough to buy those games that could also be exploited for FPS games. Just save your money if you aren't interested in annual installments of the same rehashed game. In the case that you do want annual installments of the same old stuff, then I'm assuming you fall into the 25% of Americans that are retarded. In which case I doubt you made it past the first few sentences without stuttering, and certainly haven't read this far, which makes the point moot.

But my biggest beef about this game is that the little perks that made varied styles of play work in MW2 have changed or are gone completely (too many to name here). Further, with the style of maps created for MW3 and with the aforementioned changes in perks, the game is now a "gift" to campers and snipers (what I always thought was a lazy and boring style of play). I was a 3 or 4 to 1 K/D player in the previous versions but if I'm going to even come close to 2 to 1 in MW3, I have to camp or snipe. That goes for EVERY map, not just two or three. While I won't get into spoilers, it basically wraps up the story fans of the other Modern Warfare titles are sure to enjoy. The multiplayer adds some new features, but all in all it is still the same old game. I honestly got bored with it faster than previous Call of Duty's simply because I've already had the experience with it in the past. While it is fun and easy to lose some hours into, it's easy to say that the FPS genre popularity (at least for me) is slowly declining. The Spec Ops is definitely a step up from Modern Warfare 2's. With missions to do, and survival it is sure to keep you entertained for a while with one other friend. By yourself, however, it may be a little bit easier to get bored quicker. The unlock and ranking system is unique and very different from the previous title. But looking deeply into it, it does get repetitive. Go kill some hostiles and collect something of importance, or defend an area. The survival mode on the other hand has different difficulties which adds to the pizazz of the overall game. Once again it is much better and I highly recommend playing with one friend (2 player co-op) so you have more fun with it. Overall, Modern Warfare 3 is a good game and could have been a lot better, minus all the repetitive and perhaps an enhanced multiplayer with even more changes. Expand

The spec ops is back with the standard co-op missions from the past with a new Survival mode. Survival mode is really good and could almost stand toe to toe with Zombies, ALMOST. Its pretty cool you get your own ranking within the survival mode where you level up and are granted accsess to new guns within the mode. All together this game feels like more of the same which is what it seems they've been doing with all the new COD'S. If you havent bought this game yet then dont. I would personally spend 60$ on the upcoming Call of Duty:Black Ops 2 which is comin out in November. Expand

Sure they revamped the killstreak system, added "perks" for the guns, and new games modes (Kill Confirmed, etc.) but it's not enough innovation to justify the $60 price tag. The aim assist is very strong, there's barely any recoil in guns, deathstreaks are still in the game, killstreaks still do all the work for you, and the community has not changed one bit. I hate that the developers are catering to the casual players and making the game easier for bad players and anyone to get in and do good. It is truly the most disappointing COD title and for all of 2011. Call of Duty was a very great series, but once Activision started to see that green coming in, it all changed. It's now a cash cow and nothing else. Expand

Nothing has changed same engine, same lagfests, same **** perks, same generic gameplay. Waste of my time. "Modern Warfare 2.5." DLC goes to Xbox Please Fix Me users first leaving out as usual PS3 and PC. No point in getting it on those 2 at all. If you buy this game your I.Q. is most likely below -.0 or you are just another 13 year old.

Very repetitive and boring. I'm glad I decided not to buy this game. Expand

A very good game. It has a good campaign and a nice multiplayer. It's not much different than Modern Warfare 2 and is a bit disappointing but it's still a great game for CoD fans.

-maps are all grey and blobish. They aren't horribly designed like they are in ghosts, they do feel kind if uninteresting.
-massive balance issues. The type 95, fmg9, ACR, striker, and mp7 dominate the battlefield. Nobody uses anything different. Also, the assassin perk is way to powerful, blocking nearly every type of radar and surveillance. Having every weapon be the same is not balance, its just makes anything with remotely different stats OP.

So yeah, If you have played mw2, you've basically played a toned down version of mw3. Can it be fun? Yes, but it feels like you are playing a mod rather than a sequel, and is to thank for the cod haters tradition of saying nothing has changed.

I'm not into multiplayer gaming these days, so when I buy a shooter I expect a single player game on the quality bar of something Irrational Games might put out. And while I did enjoy the first and second instalment of CoD on PC, I have become pretty jaded at this point with the the Modern Warfare SP campaigns, which is really nothing more than the same game with a different paint job. Spec-Ops mode is fun for what it is, but other than that I cant in good conscience inflate my score any higher than a yellow mark. So sorry to Glen Schofield, I hear your appeal on twitter and I think it sucks that BF fans are being a-holes with the scores because I think that game suffers from the same lack of innovation and quality in the single player department too... But as far as this MW3 is concerned, imo its a mediocre game simply due to the fact I am so jaded on this franchise now. It just doesn't interest me any more... Doesn't mean any dev who worked on this title shouldn't be proud of their work, as usual their is a good level of polish, but even the most addictive innovative game can get boring after a while, especially if its milked so heavily. The tipping point was at MW2 I think, so we've already started on the gradual decline in gamer support for this IP. Anyone in the industry or who has been gaming since the Atari 2600 has seen this happen many times before. Its a slow undignified death. Expand

Although the multiplayer still doesnt interest me,i was again very pleasantly suprised by the new survival mode, which is much better than i thought it would be.Spec Ops is ok from what i've seen so far,but its about time we ditched these half -baked Co-Op 'Side' modes & gave us full Campaign Co-Op.you are in a squad,or not alone, after all.World at War managed to to it,so theres NO excuse!(I'm looking at you too Battlefield!) Hell if this game DID have Campaign Co-Op,i think it easily would've been one of my favourate games of all time. But it hasnt,so i wont go there.I still dont know why Activision thinks this game is worth more than all other games,price-wise,but this is a much better game than i was expecting it to be,evolution or not.I still prefer Battlefield 3 that little bit more, due to the fact that i find both its Campaign & Multiplayer good fun(That game needs Campaign Co-Op too, hence the scores not 10 for that either),but technically i still give both games a solid 9.For once the hype is warranted with this game,& i never thought i'd be saying that about a Call of Duty game for a while.. This game was slapped together. The guns sound the same and nothing new is added. Quickscoping is now easier than using an SMG. Call of Duty has been completely casualized and Modern Warfare needs to hang it up.

It seems like they had limited support from previous voice actors as you don't see too much of "soap" in the game, and when you do, it doesn't sound like the same voice actor as MW2 and overload sounds completely different also. The spec ops is more of the same, but i enjoyed it in mw2 and here as well, some really good co-op, in small speedy bursts unfortunately the multiplayer is terrible, the main problem is the lag compensation system that makes it so bad connections have a chance (in defense of it though, it tries to make the game fair because in previous cods you may have thought you were the better shot but you probably had the better connection) the gun and attachment selection is ok, some weapons are obviously superior to others and the games end fast, the maps don't flow like previous games but the do try to eliminate camping Expand

I greatly enjoyed the campaigns of CoD 4 and MW2, and could not wait to see how Captain Price and Soap's journey ends. Unfortunately while I believe the campaign was still good, I walked away feeling unfulfilled and disappointed. In Modern Warfare 2's campaign when the Russians invaded the United States and you fought through the backyards of rural Virginia, that gave me the feeling of "Woah... holy **** this is kind of awesome!" just because it was so different than your traditional military shooter missions. Modern Warfare 3's campaign just didn't deliver any of those moments for me. It felt as though the campaign just went through the motions, and hit on way too many of the cliche shooter moments. I have always been someone who has greatly enjoyed the Call of Duty multiplayer experience, and committed hours of my life to it. I was excited to see some of the changes they were making, such as strike packages and weapon leveling because I felt it would mix up the flow. However, after playing eight hours so far of multiplayer, I feel it is more broken than ever. Perhaps it is just me, but it feels like weapons are far too overpowered now, and matches have turned into killstreak fests. For instance I remember in MW2 and Black Ops when getting kill streaks such as a stealth bomber and EMP were difficult and rare. However with the support strike package, these are frequent events in games such as domination. Overall Modern Warfare 3 still a good game in my eyes, but the campaign and changes to MW3 just do not live up to the hype they received. While many people may be complaining about the lack of innovation /change or that it's MW2.5, I am complaining because of the unbalanced feel to multiplayer and the campaign that is such a major let down after what I feel was an absolutely terrific MW2 campaign. As much as I love Captain Price and Soap, this game just wasn't able to do them justice. Expand

A soulless cash-in, Modern Warfare 3 represents everything that is wrong with modern gaming. I have no doubt that it will be showered with 9+ scores, but in reality this is merely a phoned-in recycle of a 4 year old game.

Great first person shooter. Call of Duty was the first brand to get it right. Everybody just hates on it cause it has the market locked down and they are probably terrible at playing the game. Also if you want a longer campaign turn up the difficulty. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
