I'll preface this by stating that I was a COD lackey. MW and MW2 were gaming experiences I still relish to this day. Unfortunately I can't say the same about MW3. Unfortunately I can't say the same about MW3. I am completely disappointed by the latest offering. With a franchise so ground breaking, it's a shame that the creativity process couldn't keep up. The story went from harrowing and exciting to predictable and cliche. The engine now feels stale. The multiplayer is where I encounter the biggest problems. The hit detection is atrocious to a point beyond frustration. It's no fun being killed when you're 5 feet around the corner. The spawning system is still laughable as I was easy pickings on many occasions. But my biggest gripe about this installment are the maps. Following up classic maps from MW and MW2 was going to be difficult but it feels like IW just didn't put forth the thought and effort into these. Yes they gave us a lot more maps but this is a classic case of quantity over quality. Many of the maps are breeding campers and hole up points. There are a few choke points but those few are really abused. All this just encourages you to avoid that part of the map hindering your overall experience. With these problems, the replay value takes a hit and I haven't played the game for over a week. A prestigious franchise as COD shouldn't be taking a backseat to other games but the lack of entertainment and innovation has forced me towards more enjoyable experiences such as Skyrim and Uncharted 3. I've even ventured back into Battlefield 3 to appease my FPS craving. It may not have the polish that MW3 has but I'm having a better time with it. Expand

I apologize to all the fanboys but MW3 really did not meet expectations. I was actually excited for some features of MW3 even though I do not like the CoD series since 4 but MW3 made me excited for the game. I was disappointed, the multiplayer is literally identical to MW2 with different guns. Yeah some features are nice, like the weapon levels and stuff but is it necessary? Really, I liked Call of Duty back then, but over the years, it's the exact same thing. While it continues the plot, which could have ended two games ago, it had potential to be a good game. That potential seemed to have vanished. Long story short: I don't like paying $60 for a Downloadable Content. MW3 seemed more like MW2.5 for me. The plot was very obvious and many elements of the game seem copy and pasted. I also found something on a website (Link below) about the desperation of the boss to try and boost up its score on this website. http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/11/14/modern-warfare-3-dev-attempts-to-boost-metacritic-score-via-twitter/

The add ons and "elite" are overpriced crap. Most the fans hate this turd. The series needs to end, NOW. How many call of duty titles can they really make? Soon, there gonna make Spyro of duty, Crash of duty, or Skylanders of duty.

With that in mind this review is based purely on the multiplayer Split screen and online. IMHO its a below average FPS, discounting the fact that its a repackage on MW2, the multiplayer is clunky with lag being more a deciding factor in victory than any relevant skill, there are crazy balance issues. the level system is boring and tedious especially when combined with the "gun levelling system" which is just a stupid filler idea to prolong game play, but the worst problem by a mile are the killstreaks, in this FIRST PERSON SHOOTER u get killed more often than not by a helicopter gunship or a bombing run, missile launched from a drone or some other weapon system completely unrelated to the term FPS, in the average game after doing some counting i found i get kill only 15% of the time by a gun, the rest is some form of air strike. To sum it up its too much bells and whistles and not enough FPS. If you want a FPS that is just that a First person shooter i would not recommend this game, if u want a skill less frag fest with enough helicopter gun ships, stealth bombers and remote control missiles to replace the car as the accepted mode of transport. more explosions than people and a game decided by lag not seen since the days of dial up then MW3 is for you, i got my copy for £25, but i had to pay full retail £44.99 i would have been so annoyed. this is a huge disappointement to me, and other "veteran" CoD players i know.
the multiplayer is incredibly "old", it feels like im playing MW1/2 again, while i was hoping for something new, and truly unique to the CoD experience. the Campaign is reaaaally easy and linear, the story has cliches all over it, and the enemy's behave as stupid as ever.
Also, the graphics are practically the same and the sounds dont sound intense or realistic.

    My CoD times are over,
    I want my 60$ back.

I had very high expectations for this game and for some reason I figured this was it. This was going to be the cream of the crop. The game that would be so perfect I would play it for years. This was going to be the cream of the crop. The game that would be so perfect I would play it for years. I was wrong. This game is not innovative or different from the other COD's but frankly that is not the reason for my bad rating. I don't mind a recycled game, as long as they simply polish the old one and make it better. They did fix a few things in this game but at the expense of breaking others. Overall I would give the campaign a 7. Mostly because it was way to short. should have been about twice as long. Yeah it's a bit repetitive but it was still fun. Even those who gave this a poor rating have to admit that there aren't really that many other FPS's who overall have as good of campaigns as COD. The multiplayer on the other hand is total garbage. I would give the multiplayer a 2. Just so many things wrong with it. Prob the worst multiplayer out of mw1, 2, waw, bops. Could be because sledgehammer worked on the multiplayer. who knows. Anyway here are some of the problems I've seen with the multiplayer. 1. The lag compensation is horrible idea. Worst invention in gaming. For those who don't know what that is, its basically an artificially induced lag on those with good connections. In theory this sounds like a good idea but it never works. Basically your playing a game with everyone lagging. Ever have a situation where you turn a corner only to be killed in .01sec by what seems like a single bullet and a player with godlike reflexes, only to see on the killcam that he in fact saw you for quite some time and fired a hail of bullets? You can thank lag compensation for that. 2. The maps are horrible. They're full of choke points that make objective games unfair depending on where your spawning. They are many times one sided giving the lucky team the spawns with the high ground, allowing them to pin you into a corner. They lack open space with long distance shooting lanes. Everywhere you turn your view is obstructed by something forcing nothing but close quarter combat. 3. quickscoping, nuff said.
    4. Bullet dmg is weak. Makes it tough to quickly snap and kill multiple enemies unless they are in a line since you waste 5sec and half a clip to kill the first which by then his teammate has killed you. Long distance kills have become super difficult because now people have plenty of time to duck behind cover after being hit by the first spray of bullets. After every game take a look at the assists. There are now tons of them because nobody can finish off their own kills. When it only takes 3-4 bullets to kill someone, that doesn't leave much time for a teammate to come in and steal your kill but 5-6 is plenty of time for them to pop off one bullet after they see you firing. I even had 9 assists just by myself in one TDM game. WTF is that!
    5. Most killstreaks are completely OP. Black ops I actually think had a decent balance of killstreaks. Dog's and the chopper gunner were easy to counter with rockets our your own gun. 6. Giant names above enemies is dumb. I used to pride myself on being able to stop a tiny spec of an enemy across the map, now they just gave everyone that ability with 6inch name plates that pop up if they aim anywhere near me. No point in even hiding behind cover because if even so much as your pinky toe is sticking out your full name shows up. These name plates also block your view. The stupid things sits right on top of the guy and I can't even see what I'm shooting at. 7. Spawns are decent but have their moments. I've literally been spawned 10ft in front of an enemy or right in the line of fire between 2 people. However, I do see less of situations where the entire team all of a sudden starts spawning right on top of you and your pro camp spot. 8. Kill confirmed gametype is completely dumb. At the very least show us how many tags we've collected along with our overall kills. Yeah Mripwnnewbs might have 50 kills but is he even picking up any dog tags? We have no way of knowing. 9. Headquarters is still luck based. Keeps one team constantly spawning on the new location. Frankly it's kinda a flawed gametype to begin with but w/e.
    10. Create a class interface is cumbersome. When customizing certain aspects of my gun (attachments, camo, etc. ) I should have to keep going through all the menus of choices to get to the one I want. there should be separate menus for each of those things like in bops. I also hate the killstreak interface. I hate how if I go from say, assault to support for example just to unlock or switch my selection, it automatically switches me to that type. I can't tell you how many times I've started a game with the wrong killstreak package because I switched it on me when all I wanted to do was unlock somehting new or reselect my 3 choices for future use. So far no COD has held my attention better than MW1. It was simple and polished.

My instinct was to give this game a 5- It defines "mediocre". It is not bad by any stretch. No, rather it is tired. It looks like MW2 and plays like MW2, which could have been forgiven if it was written like MW1. It wasn't. Expectation games are dangerous if your product doesn't come up to snuff, and so I'm giving it a 3.

Things I like- just like MW2 the production values are fine.

Things I don't like- paying $60 for the same thing I purchased a few years ago. The technology is the same, the gameplay is the same, the environments are different and yet feel the same. It feels like a lazy installment of the series, hyped in order to make money rather than create a worthy successor to this landmark series.

I have never been so disappointed in a new game purchase this big, ever... While it still feels Modern Warfarish, it definitely is too fast paced now, to the point of just complete chaos. Skill is no longer a requirement, but luck of spawn is. They have yet to fix the spawn system, even though this is the 3rd generation of the game. If you aren't spawned in front of an enemy, there is another one in any direction in front of you. This leads me to map design, the maps are fairly small compared to previous games, and there aren't any real good ones that make you excited to see the map again. They even feel as though someone else designed them, which leads me to believe the guys that left Infinity Ward during production, really didn't have much of a hand in the map design. Lastly, I feel like I'm back in the same grind of the first 2 games, it doesn't feel fresh and new like it once did, which might be expected and not all bad, but it really causes one to loose interest quicker. I wish I could say more good things about the game, but I truely am disappointed, there just isn't alot of consistency in this games multiplayer, and playing it really feels like an old quake multiplayer match but with too many players. I think I'll be returning this on Friday towards Skyrim. Expand

Another MW game, and this time, they didn't bother to hide the fact that they were reusing textures and building from the fourth installment, or that they hardly changed anything about the overall gameplay. In fact, they seemed to have taken a step back from their newer game, Black Ops, opting for a tired out MW2 system. Brainless fun, a junk food of a game. Save your 60$.

    I'm going to be honest.

There are some people who can be jaded to something that is popular for the reason that it is, well, popular.

CoD would be an example, but do the jaded people have good reasons to be jaded?

Well, yes, everything has an opinion of something.

I've heard that people have been slandering this user review page (BF3 fanboys, apparently) and i decided to weight my opinion on stuff related and not related to the game.

This is a game that is supposed to be a depiction of war, and for all it does, it does a good job capturing that 'war' feeling with the brown and bloom and the shooting, but something feels empty. i'm sure people have said this, but the game plays through scripted sequences and sometimes feels like you're playing an interactive movie rather than a video game, and i would happen to agree.

some would say "that's just good directing" but if the goal of the game is to capture the essence of war, why does it feel like every mission is just some objective that has no point other to progress a typical war story?

if the game's goal was to immerse ourselves and feel tension from playing the game, it did it all wrong. i felt some emotion at some parts, but nothing that made a lasting impact, the story was dry and was far too 'micheal bay esque' to please me.

The story has set difficulties to play on, but feels too casualized to make me want to care, i played veteran and there were far too many re-spawn points and many times i felt like there wasn't a challenge because of this not to mention the level design isn't exactly via scripted sequences and linear paths.

the sound is alright, a mention to the whole "WAR IS BAD" theme there is gun-fire and everybody yelling and things explode, there isn't much else as far the soundtrack goes, some orchestrated themes, a guitar lick or two, and that's the soundtrack.

of course, these games never did have a emphasis on soundtracks.

The gameplay as mentioned is very simple, you shoot bad guys, they die, america is the best.

i suppose i can say that the controls are responsive for playing with a controller.

well, i suppose there is more to it but the objective is basically that, it's not a very hard game to pick up and play, even on higher difficulties as mentioned.

multiplayer is the same thing, quite literally. there was no change to the multiplayer beside some kill-streak changes and some new guns and whatnot.

i enjoy the multiplayer and i could find it fun if i didn't have some rampant 13 year old screaming in my ear or some teenager saying **** everytime he gets shot in the face.

this is where i just can't seem to enjoy CoD, the fan-base is just awful and i either have to mute my microphone and everyone else and try to enjoy a game hoping that i won't get called out or get hate-mail because everyone is a whiny ****

it saddens me, i like CoD, but it just doesn't have polish, it doesn't do anything new, and it fails to deliver from a perspective of people who were looking for something else besides a re-skin.

to put it simple: if you like CoD, you'll like this one, if you don't, pass it up and let this fad bury itself into the ground much like any other Activision game.

The game is solid and playable, and that's why it saved itself from a zero. But what gets it a 5 is that fact the game hasn't brought anything new to the table. How can the supposed "Most Anticipated Game in History" not do anything... relatively new? The engine is the same, the graphics are the same, same lackluster (trying to be blockbuster) single player, but wait! The multiplayer is kinda different-ish. Take a look at some of the critics' reviews, and a lot of them take notice of this as well. But strangely, they still give the game an amazing score... very strange. In my opinion, this should have been released as an expansion pack, mainly because the game only switches up the gameplay by a little bit by fixing balancing issues and a revamped killstreak point system in hopes of inspiring some sort of cohesive teamwork and combating the plagues of air support mowing down any poor soul that steps into the open. Oh, and throw in a couple of new maps (which supposedly include old models recycled from the first Modern Warfare). Only then, I would I be willing to give my money to an obviously hungry Activision. I just wish they spent more time on going above and beyond with this franchise, aka not pumping out a game every year. But the game is a crowd favorite (and remember, just because everyone loves it, doesn't mean it's always good!) and a huge cash cow, so in the eyes of Activision working less on it and still selling millions is the best situation they could ask for. But I guess they haven't learned jack **** about over-saturating the market! Just think, when was the last time you've seen a new Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk game on the shelves? Yea... that's what I thought. I'm just glad I rented this. Expand

TThis game is terrible it takes absolutely no skill to kill the enemy, the spawning is the worst in the history of FPS, i paid 64.99 to have a alternative to battlefield 3, because I like the run and gun style, but from the outdated graphics, the outdated UI, the countless children, and the complete lack of innovation, this game has become a credit for skyrim...

MW3 follows some of what Black Ops started with a more gun on gun gameplay and improves on the Modern Warfare brand. From what I have played of the campaign it is compelling and action packed. The MP is loads of fun, especially the new kill confirmed mode which comes in hardcore, regular and 9v9 ground war varieties. Best Cod since Cod4.

We've all seen sequels that go too far for innovation and spoil the original game-play. MW3 is NOT one of those games. If anything, MW3 will be remembered for how much it DIDN'T change. I have thought to myself "but wait... I've already played this game" more than once.

Like another reviewer said, the campaign plays like it was written by Michael Bay's evil twin. Full of huge explosions

Like another reviewer said, the campaign plays like it was written by Michael Bay's evil twin. Full of huge explosions and silly reasoning that fills in for plot. The campaign is entertaining, but it's like candy. Have too much in one sitting and you'll get sick. The campaign is also very short, which is fine with me since it's full to the brim with HOLY SH!T moments.

MP is a direct continuation of the CoD formula with it's usual flaws and infrequent high points. Bullet lag is still a major problem. Too many times have I shot a player 3-4 times, watch the Kill-cam and see that 0 shots registered. Since I have already played my fair share (and gotten bored) of CoD online, there isn't much bringing me back game-play wise... which leads me to my last point:

MAPS. So far they have been pretty frustrating. Most of the old CoD maps had a nice directional feeling to them. Your team fought toward the other team, usually ending up with the teams pushing back and forth across the map. Not so much now. Most encounters are random, 1v1 surprise moments in the maze of corridors and small rooms where the player with the better connection wins.

I am a fan of the new maps although, camping does seem to be a major factor in the development which is really disappointing for a game classified as "hand to hand combat" or in other words run and gun. With so many dark corners and small windows this installment is yet again another noob tube/campers/snipers dream land. For me the multiplayer has not taken any steps forward. Black ops (although Treyarch is generally hated on by Ward followers) is a far superior game. They hit it home with allowing for claymores, tac inserts, ect as a third button and not having to replace your grenades. However, the most dissapointing part of this game for me is the perks. They have not been changed much from MW2 which was one of the biggest complaints about MW2. Major problems with the arrangment in the 3 slots as well as the pros not really having to do much with that perk at all. Example: Slight of hand pro = change weapons faster? While needing to use a whole other perk to gain faster aiming down the sights. What about marathon? Their is no long even an option for unlimited sprint in a game that is suppose to get back to gun to gun combat. Sure they have extreme conditioning which allows a minimal added time for spint but its in the same slot as 2 other important perks. How about having to use 2 perk slots to accomplish what black ops did with ghost pro. I could rattle on and on about how much better black ops and even MW2 is than this game but in the end I'm truly dissappointed with how much this game has evolved from first person shooters skills to hiding in a corner or by a window and shooting a noob tube toward the area of an enemy or shooting them in the back. The only reason I still rate this game with a 6 is because I do truly enjoy the new map packs for MW2 however not worth $60 and waiting in line at midnight for the release. Expand

The story behind the campaign is awesome and I love that it picks up right where it left off. The multiplayer is also worth the purchase. It may not seem a lot different than prior Call of Duties but it is different enough that makes it really fun and the things that are different are what you probably wanted to be different originally.

There is a growing awareness amongst even the most complacent video game fans about the industry at the moment. I believe with Modern Warfare 3, Sledgehammer have underestimated the intelligence of fans of the series and moved into exploitation territory. People really have been taken for fools and I would argue that this is an ethically questionable moment in this new era of blockbuster video games.

I should add, I haven't played the game, but felt this needed to be said.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
