Got home from an awesome midnight launch to read dozens of zero rated reviews (including one guy who said already he'd finished the single player on veteran in only 6 hours but it was only 1:30am at that time - an hour and a half after release). All I can say is that after playing for several hours now, that this will be the disc in my 360 for 95% of the time until the next COD. It is that good. (Okay maybe I will swap it out for a bit more for GTA 5 when it is released - LOL).
    I thought MW2 was a 10, I thought Black Ops was an 8.5, and MW3 is a 10 again.
It's pretty clear that when the pro reviewers are mostly all giving it very high marks, the users giving it a zero within minutes of it's release are as credible as the claims they are making about finishing it as quickly.

Great game! I bought BF3 on launch, and I loved it. Then when MW3 came out, I decided to go buy it, I was not disappointed! Keep in mind this is the first Modern Warfare game I have purchased. The campaign was amazing, online is spectacular, and spec ops is sweet, especially survival mode.

Game is exactly what i thought it would be, best call of duty to date. Really liking the new upgrades, survival mode and other weeks they made. Dont know what all the hate is about this is the 8th COD and they've improved it just like the did all the other ones. They've never done a complete overhaul in the game just build from it

I have had my complaints with Call of Duty games before and after sinking a few hours into each of MW3's modes I can say that it is without a doubt the most balanced and refined experience any of the Call of Duty games have ever delivered. The campaign is a non-stop adrenalin rush that keeps moving you from one crazy set piece to another. In multiplayer the game feels better than it ever has before with new point streaks and strike packages to help give the game a sense of balance that was sorely missed in MW2. Personally the highlight of the game comes in the new Spec-Ops survival mode. This new mode highlights what makes Call of Duty such a great gaming experience; online or split-screen co-op, fast past gun fights that increase in difficulty and a leveling structure similar to the online multiplayers offering allow this mode to become a very satisfying and addicting treat that will let players enjoy MW3 for a very long time.

AND It really is a shame what people are doing here by rating the game low simply because THEY do not care for Call of Duty at all. Most of the bad reviews have come from people who never actually played the game. I saw an article on IGN.com about how bad these reviews have been from users so i thought i would give my honest opinion on what i thought of the game and how i felt about the sad trolling and/or blatant misinformation that has been posted about this game. This one's for you Glen Schofield! thanks for helping make a great game.

If you are a person that plays multiplayer and usually forgets about campaign and the other modes...then yea...you arent going to get much! and you should expect that by now! I didn't even understand the jump between Call of duty 4's multiplayer and MW2's. But anyway...I just do not understand what was expected from the game overall. People always loved modern warfare for what it was..WHY would they change it completely? Obviously they added perks here and there...modes and guns etc. They didn't show us anything terribly new in the first place...The game works like it is supposed to, feels great like it always has..and continued the campaign. I remember when people complained that Black ops wasn't as good as MW2...now MW3 is similar to MW2..what's up? That's what everyone liked. I was afraid that the game would not have been created!..I was also afraid that it would not feel as smooth as MW2 but they pulled together and got it done! I'm happy for sledgehammer and infinity ward for creating this excellent game. Either way..for such a BIG franchise, if they change it too much, people complain...then if they don't change enough..they complain. Expand

The game is very similar to MW2. So if you like MW2 you will be happy. This is my impression after 2 hours of play on several maps. The map complexity and detail is much improved over black ops with several good sniping lanes and multiple tiers for height advantage. I played over 250 hours of black ops and I think the hit detection is much better. The new "kill confirmed" game mode is interesting. In this mode you have to collect a dead player's dog tags to score points for the team. You can also collect your teams dog tags to keep the other team from scoring points.

At this point, COD is not going to change. If you thought you were going to boot up the disc and your character was going to be a small furry wolf shooting skittles and skipping on clouds, you're an idiot. The ground rules for COD are set a this point. You're going to kill people. You're going to have perks. You're going to have killstreaks. You're going to play game modes designed to kill people, to hold flags, to capture flags, or to blow stuff up. Sure there will be little wrinkles in each release, but at this point COD is less like a video game and more like a sport-- like football or basketball. The variety comes not in the changes to the rules, but in changes in the people you play against. Activision will not, and should not, dramatically reinvent this game every year. So IMO, the best you can do as a legitimate critic is to rate the game based on how the game plays, based on map design, and based on overall execution. Half these "zero" reviewers didn't even need to buy the game to complain about the things they're whining about, so they're not doing anyone a service with the reviews. If you don't like COD, just don't buy the game ever again and shut up.

So after all that, I'll say that the game appears to be an improvement over Modern Warfare 2. Gone are many of the player abuses from that game-- the constant grenade launching, commando knifing, etc. Only time will tell if new abuses will arise and how responsive Infinity Ward will be to fixing them. I like the addition of weapon proficiencies, where they have moved some of the weapon specific perks from previous installments. It's too early to tell what the full impact of the new killstreak system will be to gameplay, but the game does seem more frantic because so many killstreaks are active. That could hurt the quality of play in the long term. But the variety of having assault, support, and specialist killstreaks will also keep the game fresh so it's a balance. None of the new game types (kill confirmed, etc.) will supplant favorites like TDM or Domination but they do provide some interesting variety. The maps in this game are small, making this one of the fastest paced COD games, but it will take in the game to give a fair review of the map design. But for right now, I'd say this game is an 8 of 10.

The multiplayer takes what was great in the first two games and refines and tweaks the formula. There is a fair number of multiplayer maps ( I counted 16) and they are well designed. The devs also made improvements to the Spec Ops mode which further increases value you are getting for your money. I would recommend this game to anyone who is thinking about getting it. I am not sure where all of these bad user scores are coming from. If you have enjoyed the Modern Warfare titles in the past, you will enjoy Modern Warfare 3. I swear this is the biggest bandwagon on the Internet. I just wish people would stop such childish things. BATTLEFIELD AND CALL OF DUTY CANNOT BE COMPARED. Yes, they are both modern shooters with pretty graphics and good gameplay. Outside of that, though, there are NO notable similarities. COVERS MULTIPLAYER AND SPEC OPS ONLY

Anyways, the game is still just as good as previous iterations. The series has decayed over time, and what felt fresh and exciting in Call of Duty 4 feels generic in 2011. Despite this fatigue, it's just as addictive as ever. I'm already level 25, and it has barely been two days since it was released. The Spec Ops mode was fantastically addictive as well, and is the freshest and most fun part of the whole package. I've played the first few levels of single player, but haven't beaten it so I wouldn't want to talk about that aspect without completing it. All in all...buy this game if you are a casual shooter fan. If you are a hyper competitive multiplayer gamer, and find Battlefield 3 too "open" for your tastes, pick this up as well. I'd normally give this an 8.75, but since this scale wouldn't allow anything besides full numbers, and this terrible and suspicious backlash, I'm giving it a 10. I know it won't affect the score, I just want to point out the hard work people put into making this fun game and hopefully knock some sense into these idiots.

Every big release seems to be positioned opposite a different game of the same genre and even before they have been released a battle of words ensues on the internet as to whose game is better, more advanced or prettier and of course the ever present used-so-often-it-lost-all-its-meaning "fanboy" crops up in every other sentence. You can drink Coke AND Pepsi, you can wear Levis AND Dockers, you can eat Big Macs AND Whoppers, you can read Harry Potter AND War and Peace, watch The Shield AND The Wire, you can play Dark Souls AND Skyrim, CoD AND BF, etc. It is baffling to read 'reviews' on this site and at the same time be 100% certain the persons who wrote them did not play the game they're reviewing for 1 second but are actively repeating the same lines that have been said over and over again for hundreds of such 'reviews' in a row. The actual lines put into their mouths by the "other company" trying to outshine their competitors. The Xbox 360's hardware can't get any better, the CoD games are popular and keep breaking records every time they are released so they must be doing something right, and you'd be pretty annoyed if they changed everything this time round - for example if FIFA 2012 was released as a rugby game you'd be outraged!

It might not wow you the way COD4 did, but this remains a very good shooter. Expand

The most overhyped piece of trash I've ever played. Every Call of Duty game has been identical since 2007. The developers make very little effort to make the games exciting and this is no exception. If you already have MW2 or any other COD game for that matter, you certainly don't need this. There's absolutely nothing new on offer. Avoid like the plague.

I've played every COD that has been released, and I can see where people feel this is more MW2.5 than MW3. Some of the maps have that "I've been here before" feel to it, so some of the interaction feels a bit rehashed. There are some changes that I really do like, and I feel deserve praise. I like the fact that your weapons level up separately from you character, so you don't have to tie up a perk slot to have multiple attachments. I find surpressors a MUST in COD...and the fact that I can add range to my surpressed UMP45 is a HUGE perk in my mind. The addition of the "Specialist" and "Support" strike packages is good for a change of pace...and I do find myself tinkering with them depending on my gameplay. Overall this game is very fun to play, and that goes a long way in my review, but this game is nowhere near perfect...8.0. Expand

As long as we - the consumers - continue to consume the Call of Duty series, Activision will continue to publish them. Last I checked, something like 4+ million people had logged on in the first day - on Xbox alone. Remember that the 360 is over the hill and it gets harder to push the limits of an aging system. Is it a 10? Probably not, but it's close and definitely the best of the series. People who purchased and enjoy the game for what it is (a mindless, yet highly addictive and well-polished action arcade shooter) need to help balance out all the negativity surrounding this release. For example: one said reviewer also gave Battlefield 3 10/10 twice!!?! and MW3 0/10! and there are many other accounts of similar happenings, just check a few user's other reviews if you have the time. I have been playing Call of Duty since COD3 on the 360, I also own a PS3 and have played a lot of MW2 and Black Ops on both platforms. For me (as I'm sure it is for most) it is all about the multiplayer, though I have some fond memories of hiding in my Ghillie suit in MW1. In my opinion, there is simply no other multiplayer experience like it. It is the closest thing to digital crack. The gameplay is very tight and fast paced, and it feels so satisfying when you are doing well (also terrible when you are on the back foot, this is part of the magic) With the leveling, the challenges, and the accolades, it feels like you are being rewarded every time you play. It's a great feeling the first time around, but there is a sense of diminishing returns after you prestige. Not to worry, because the gameplay is so much fun. I have played 11 hours of online MW3 already and had many unforgettable moments that will stick with me. The new maps are awesome. Kill Confirmed is a great new multiplayer mode, which is so addictive now when I play any other mode I am already conditioned to look for the tags. I have a few criticisms: I have already noticed a few lag switchers in game, but I promptly saved a video from the theatre of their antics, and reported them. I hope that Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer Games will deal with them accordingly. The fact that Elite wasn't working on launch date was a big fail. Yes the game engine is old now, but it runs at 60fps and is smoother than a baby's buttocks.

Despite any shortcomings, I support this game and the developers who put all their hard work into it. I just hope lots of other fans come out of the woodwork and say their piece.

Most of their criticisms are the "small maps","lack of vehicles", and "lack of destruction". If you want those things play Battlefield and stop hating on a game because it outsold yours. Honestly I have been playing COD since the original and it has consistently set the bar for first person shooters especially for console players. I would have purchased this game even if it had no single player campaign at all. I find it extremely hard to play single player when the multiplayer is this addictive. In my opinion a game would have to be completely broken and unplayable to warrant a "0" rating and this game is far from that. The shooting mechanic is still the best on the market and firefights are always frantic and exciting. Personally I love the close quarters combat. There is no better feeling than turning a corner, catching a glimpse of 2 enemies heading your direction and having the skills to get both kills when they have the upperhand. So Im sorry to all the users on here that played MW3 for a couple hours online, got slaughtered by me, lost all self esteem and rated this game a "0". The multiplayer is top notch but I wish they would have incorporated 4 players into Survival Mode. Also I'd hoped that playing Survival Mode would help to rank me up in multiplayer but they are 2 separate things. If there were some kind of reward to playing Special Ops that would carry over to your multiplayer that would be great. The beta for BF3 convinced me to go with MW3 (not to mention most of my friends were getting this game).

I've got about a dozen hours into the MP and feel that it's very comparable to MW2, but with some interesting (but good) changes and better graphics. I realize a lot of people are complaining that it's similar to previous installments. My response is, "yeah, and??". They're supposed to be similar. You can't make sweeping changes to the game and expect to keep the core audience. This particular formula has made COD the king of the hill of first person shooters. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The campaign to this point (about 5 hours in) isn't great but is definitely a step up from MW2. I'm playing through on veteran and am thoroughly enjoying myself with it. As with all COD campaigns, the gameplay and shooting is phenomenal. I find myself not overly interested in the storyline, but if I want a story, I'll read a book. I play games for gameplay and fun, and this campaign delivers on both accounts.

My favorite part of the game is definitely spec-ops. I've got about 15 hours into survival mode and am overly impressed. This (imo) is what makes this worth the purchase. As I mentioned earlier, I've been playing COD forever and don't really care too much about the MP any longer. This mode, however, will keep me wanting more. Single player or coop (coop is defintely more fun). I haven't even had time for the spec-ops missions yet, and I really enjoyed them in MW2.

Overall, this game is about a 9.25 for me. It's not an all time great, but is worth the price of admission. I can't speak of BF3, which a lot of people seem to be whining about on here, but I can't imagine it offers more as a whole. I really think it's a shame that there are so many degenerates posting reviews on a game. A zero, really? A 2, really? Even if you hate COD, rating it as a 6 or 7 will get your point across. But marking it a 5 or under is just plain hating and has no business here. A lot of us read the user reviews on sites like Metacritic to guage whether or not we should get a certain game, and the dumba$$es marking the score down are doing all of us a disservice. Please grow up!

The Campaign is short, but the story is still really good. It helps introduce the variable weapon types and game play needed to get players ready for online play. The changes to the online class customization, support options and ladder ranking is really solid. All around great sequel to MW2.

I agree with NINJA below... The call of duty franchise is the way it is for a reason. MW3 is a huge improvement from the previous releases. The campaign's graphics and story line were an improvement and the multiplayer exceeded expectations... the only issue I have is the lack of ability to dive to prone and that ELITE is all jacked up... but it is a fantastic game!!!

The same goes for CoD fanboys that played their first few games, died a lot, and felt the need to displace their rage on here. You all need to grow up, drop your laughably pitiful elitist attitudes, and stop trying to compare two shooters that are virtually incomparable.

Now, with all that out of the way, this game honestly deserves the critic rating it got. The way that sledgehammer changed the way you get unlocks for guns, and the addition of gun perks for guns is truly one of the things that makes this game shine. I loved the unlocking aspect of MW2, i would grind through all the unlocks for guns in MW2 because it was fun, and rewarding. MW3 just amplified this aspect, and it makes the game extremely rewarding, and gives it an extremely high replay value through all the prestiges. As for the gameplay, it feels almost identically to modern warfare 2 in the character movement aspect, and as for the guns, it feels familiar, but not the exact same. Guns now have more recoil than MW2 had in all aspects, even if you put kick on any gun, there is still no gun that could be considered anything near a MW2 ACR laserbeam. The maps of the game are smaller, which makes for some insane action. Granted, there are some more gameplay styles that can be used for larger maps, but the smaller maps almost turn this game into a full on twitch shooter, with extreme fast paced action and frantic spawn switching. The spawns in the game right now are a little on the crazy side, but does anyone remember the insane spawning problems black ops had on release? Who says sledgehammer won't fix this like Treyarch did? C'mon people, the game hasn't been out for a week yet and you've yet to see how supportive Sledgehammer is going to be. I'm sure they're going to add in tweaks, and they'll only make the game more refined, and more enjoyable.

All in all, the game has great composure, and sure, there's some stuff to work on. But there's no extremely pressing imbalance issues or anything. The game is still all-round fun, fast, and rewarding, just like a Call of Duty game should be.

A game with an exciting campaign mode and new and inventive on-line game play. MW3 keeps you on the edge of your seat during campaign mode with its breathtaking action sequences and sharp shooting. While the on-line mode is more challenging and intense than its predecessor, it tends to lag from time to time which makes things slightly more difficult. All round a good game with no major flaws.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
