Lazy moons, square level design and extremely low difficulty hurt an otherwise quality game.

Super Mario Odyssey had a lot of potential but squandered some of it. Like Breath of the Wild, this one falls short of its own franchise. The controls in Mario Odyssey are not as tight as they should be in a Mario game, and they tried to shoehorn in motion controls yet again. Odyssey has very finnicky controls for a Mario game... This makes the game annoying at times.

Like Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey feels watered down and generic compared to the rest of its own franchise. Its worlds have disparate art styles that make the game feel incohesive. There is a lack of proper platforming, which has instead been replaced by running around large levels more than jumping. Often times the player will get moons much too frequently, which makes them feel much less rewarding than power stars in past games.

There are a few mini games, but they are not good. The Volleyball and Jump-rope mini games are more chore than fun, particularly when it comes to getting the harder of the two moons locked behind each mini game.

Some of the challenge levels in Dark Side and Darker Side are poorly designed. Looking at you, Breakdown Road (aka unadulterated BS). Most are lazy copy/paste jobs of earlier levels with some form of artificial difficulty thrown on top to do the designer's job for him. Some of the ridiculous challenge levels can be helped with the game’s assist mode when they are too annoying or too much of a chore to do legitimately. However, some of these levels are poorly designed in an unintelligent way that makes assist mode useless. I never use assist modes unless the game really forces the issue, but at least they designed it properly so that when you beat something with assist mode on, it still actually counts as beating it.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is sadly a bit lackluster compared to some of its great predecessors like Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Mario 64 and the Mario Galaxy games.

Mario controls like a dream. So its too bad that the game rarely does much interesting with it. Thought this was a decent mario game, not the best levels or most memorable, mario controls really well and its fun to pull off moves to zip around the levels, but the level designs are too simple and the over-abundance of moons diminishes the feeling of getting one. I dont really see myself coming back to play this too much but overall i still thought it was a good game, just not a masterpiece

With some empty parts and slightly repetitive gameplay, but great visuals and cool nostalgia, this game is good enough to be one of the best Mario games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game feels like a combination of Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and both Mario Galaxy games in one massive entry. A fun title that will be the focus of several Mario related subjects until the release of New Super Mario Bros Deluxe.
However, there are a few things that weigh this game down quite a bit for me.

Firstly, while I do enjoy the costume gimmick, I don't see the appeal several of the costumes and needed to purchase specific costumes for certain moons.

Secondly, the game play isn't entirely innovative. Sure the whole "Mario possess objects with Cappy" is cool and all, but after a while it gets old (not to mention a lack of enemies you can capture) and boring much like the gimmick of having a Luma fight with you in Mario Galaxy.

Finally, after finishing the core game and collecting as many moons as I had the patience for, I didn't see any replay value. In fact the main games end, where the Mushroom Kingdom is unlocked, there isn't much else to do.

While this is a very good game overall, there are a few things I really don't like about this game that bring it down for me. First, the motion controls. First, the motion controls. Some actions have mandatory motion controls to preform the action. This wouldn't be an issue if there weren't so many different things you can do at once with motion controls, making it unnecessarily difficult to do the right one. Another is some of the kingdoms feel a little drawn out and not as original. For example of an amazing one, the Luncheon Kingdom. That place is so interesting, colourful and beautiful, but then there's the Sand Kingdom, which is mostly dull and boring until you save it. Lastly, the non-main character humans are really creepy. 7.5/10 Expand

There are some fun moons but not a ton of them. The postgame moons were slightly higher quality than the ones from the main storyline, but it doesn’t make up for the amount of average or unenjoyable moons spread out throughout the entire game. Yeah, anyways this is the end of my “comprehensive review. It quite literally got a 7/10. Super Mario Odyssey is a game which made by the end of it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. The mechanics feel great, the controls and levels are very intuitive and i much enjoyed collecting the moons. However, i felt underwhelmed by this games storymode. Sure, many could argue that the story in a mario game is really not important in the grand scheme of things. I mean, look at Super Mario 3, or 64. However, compare this to Super Mario Galaxy, a game with a great story. In Galaxy, there was more to that game than great game mechanics. And the great story tied in with the difficulty of that game, which felt very appropriate. However, mario odyssey's game difficulty in relation to story progression felt very unsatisfyingly easy, and was very bland for a 3d mario game. I could skip parts of the story just by collecting moons. And the boss battles, an exception being the last bowser battle/sequence, were lacklustre as hell. I know Mario games usually have a young fan base, but still i wish there was more challenge in relation to the story. I'd trade a good story for a higher difficulty anyday. However, i have learned that the best way to play this game - for me - is just to treat it as a scavenger hunt/puzzle game. Collecting all the moons is a challenge in itself, and because of the switch's nature, i can pick up and play for 10 miniutes intervals and collect moons in that time, slowly collecting all of them. And that is when Mario Odyssey shines, when you don't focus on the story, and explore the worlds around you, and their puzzles buried in them. Expand

Mario Odyssey is a fun, uplifting game. It is especially fun when you have a kid to play it with (my nephew was around 7 at the time we played it). It’s a good looking game that plays well. Players can “get good” with using the hat to help Mario leap and bound through the worlds.

It’s not really a game I’ve enjoyed playing by myself though. And I’m not big on hunting for all the moons,

It’s not really a game I’ve enjoyed playing by myself though. And I’m not big on hunting for all the moons, so I’ve found myself playing other games. I beat the game with my nephew and we played for a while after it was beaten, but once you move on, there’s not much reason to come back. Lots of people love the game though, and the praise they shower it with is earned. To me, it just isn’t fun without a kid enjoying it with you.

If you’re a Mario fan, this is the Mario game to get on the Switch. If you’re looking for a game to play with a young kid, then I honestly can’t think of a better game than this one to do just that.

Secondly, the story is literally the same thing we’ve seen 1.65 Trillion times before in Mario games
Thirdly, apart from collecting every moon in the game and collecting all the outfits there isn’t much for post game playability

All that being said a 7,5 is a great game in my books and would definitely recommend it

Pretty good game, actually my favorite 3D Mario game. Lots of creative worlds, sharp controls, the only problem is that the "Moons", which are what you collect this time, can sometimes feel a bit cheap, as there are too many of them and some are too easy to get. Some of the worlds are too small, and it could have used another world or two, but overall a solid game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I recently replayed the game and all was well until I started to play Lake Kingdom. I really hate drowning damage and Cheep Cheeps moved too slow, so I turned on assist mode. I really don't like the 6 bonus hearts, because they make the game too easy in my opinion. I toggled assist mode off for Wooded Kingdom, not only because of the extra hearts, but also because disabling instadeath when falling off ledges is boring. Then I got to Seaside Kingdom and turned on assist mode. Ground pounding the squid was pretty hard, but I managed. After that, I went to Luncheon Kingdom, struggled to capture the fire thing, fell into the lava, repeated the process twice, and then ragequitted. However, the rest of the game is awesome and fun. I just wish there was an assist config like in Celeste and Darkest Dungeon because just two options are pretty limiting and extreme. Overall, I recommend this game if you can get over these annoyances. Expand

A stellar collectathon game but for a 3D Mario game, I expect a little better. This is for me one of the weaker 3D Mario games when compared to the challenge and level design presented by Mario galaxy or even Mario 64, which this game claims to be a successor to, yet for the most part fails to understand adding value to tasks in order to get a moon, making them feel more Korok seed than power star. I was also baffled by how you’re forced to visit each kingdom in a mostly linear order despite the game claiming to be more open-ended, while also lacking any real hub world like peaches castle from 64. Instead the actual areas you visit feel like hub worlds where you search for secrets, moons and challenge rooms rather than feeling like actual platform challenges in of themselves. While I appreciate the more open feel of the levels they just feel far too easy with no real consequence for death other than losing coins which are easily replaced. The mechanics like capturing are interesting but never feel fully taken advantage of to create the ingenious level design last seen in the Mario galaxy series. And don’t get me started on the amount of lazily copy and pasted content throughout the game. There were far too many instances where I had to ground pound a spot to get a moon or buy one from the store which count as actual missions by the way. While you can always skip these ones if you want, I ended up finding that very few of the moons actually felt rewarding to get, making a lot of the game feel like unnecessary filler.

However, I also realise this game does better in some areas than any Mario game ever. Mario has never felt so good to control and often makes me want to pick up and play the game just because of how satisfying his move set is to pull off. Therefore, this is the best looking and running game in the series with the best controls, move set and camera, though I don’t like how the wall jump has been nerfed and made almost useless. I absolutely would like to see Mario maintain this broad move set for his next 3D outing, be it with a better wall jump. I just wish the game took advantage of his move set more in the level design as many areas feel like walking simulators rather than challenges that actually utilised this move set in clever and interesting ways. Overall an amazing sandbox with extremely tight controls but a disappointing platformer that lacks challenge with many ideas not quite reaching their full potential, making Super Mario Odyssey feel more like a tutorial for breath of the wild. I enjoyed the game a lot and would recommend to any switch owner looking for a relaxing sandbox game, even if it can’t deliver on my desire for a grander platforming challenge. While I don’t think this game is the sequel to 64 or as groundbreaking as many suggest it is, I still believe it’s worth picking up and playing.

I thought that the Moon collection system in the game was incredibly repetitive and honestly became a chore for me. I did not feel any sense of accomplishment when I got a Moon. This was probably because of how easy the game is. The game is such an easy breeze that it felt meaningless to me. The capture mechanic was the coolest thing to me when I first tried it out on every enemy but it got old WAY too fast. The visuals are very striking and love that the game runs at a stable 60fps which absolutely makes this the most visually impressive Mario game yet. The controls feel super snappy and the music is incredible. Unfortunately though, these positives straight up do not outweigh the negatives to me. As I already mentioned, the moment-to-moment gameplay just does not feel meaningful to me because of the game's lack of difficulty and collectables (the integral Moon system). This game is really good. The soundtrack is amazing! Though, after completing the game, I do not feel like playing it anymore, and that is why it only gets 7/10. The difficulty is balanced even for Nintendo Switch newcomers and this was my first game I played on a Switch.

If you want to just casually play the game, I think it is a fine 10-13 hour long experience. If you are going for collecting 100% of the power moons, I think it is something around 25 hours. I really want to collect all of them, but simply there is no point for doing it. Most of the power moons are simply lying around in the open, which makes them easy to find, but absolutely not rewarding at all. Take Cat Shines in Bowser's Fury for example. They are always locked away behind some kind of a challenge (such as riding Plessie, chasing down a rabbit, chasing shadow Luigi, general platforming on islands...), they are challenging to get and feel rewarding. In Super Mario Odyssey, that is no longer the case.

The other thing about Power Moons is that there are way, way too many. That amount is absolutely unnecessary, and could have been lowered by 250 at least. Most of the moons are in the open anyway. There are around 850 unique moons to collect around the kingdoms, but the rest is locked away, because you have to buy the remaining 149 moons from shops for coins. Not only that it is an extremely lame decision, but you can buy the moons indefinitely, allowing you to reach the 999 goal (100%) with not much effort. Just buy tons of Moons. And if someone does so, you are not going to feel like collecting actual moons anymore, because you simply have the golden Odyssey sail, no point in doing it. Not mentioning that some of them make absolutely no sense. Why would some idiot even make a parking lot for motorbikes on a roof with only one single spot and even give you something for parking there? How did they expect citizen to regularly reach there!

Nintendo's idea about purple coins is absolutely ridiculous. There is no way to find every purple coin in the game without looking for them, there is no way to buy a hint like for Power Moons. Now you might be thinking, that they are around Power Moons to find. Well, yeah, good point, but not really the greatest. There is always a chance that someone may miss some while going for the moons, either because they just want to play the game or miss them by accident. If that happens, what are you going to do? Do all moons again to traverse most of the kingdom one more time only to miss them again, or look them up on YouTube? All collectibles in all games which force the player to look them up on YouTube are bad collectibles, and purple coins cannot save themselves from being crap, that is how Nintendo created them.

I really like that you can dress up Mario in some costumes, most of them look really really good. Some of the outfits grant you access to specific areas through the game and certain characters have some reactions when talking to them with a specific outfit. Most of them are really expensive, though, especially those ones unlocked later on (prices go up to 9999 coins for one item!!!), and they are absolutely unnecessary. Could have been lowered to 75% price.

A big plus is that the game has lots of post-game content. If you completed the game on 100%, you still can kill some time playing Luigi's Balloon World, which is fun, if you don't encounter hackers, but that's a story for another time.

Tanks are an absolutely ass capture. No, seriously. When playing while capturing a tank, you will feel that it is really off. They are so slow and aiming is painful as hell. The crosshair moves at different speeds on Y and X axis, meaning it is really hard to aim (and obviously, you cannot change it!)

Also a good thing to ask, why do the characters behave like absolute idiots? I understand that it is a game for kids, but keep in mind that adults and teens play as well. Some of the characters say absolute trash and feel like they have vacuum in their brain. They also made Pauline a gold digger (she does not like cheap nice umbrellas, but likes expensive purses instead LOL).

The very last two post game kingdoms are not kingdoms and have no reason to exist in the first place. They are not kingdoms, but doors to challenge rooms (one to a boss rush and the second one to a super long and tight section with no checkpoints). They just randomly added couple Moons to one of them to make them seem less empty and left them to rot there, but that did not help. They should have been in the last kingdom of the main story and just opened up after you reached all requirements to access them. With one being significantly emptier than the other, there are more almost completely blank kingdoms around the game. What a wasted opportunities they were, what a pity. Story moment, then random Moons and then bye.

The game is extremely awesome. But it still has a lot of flaws, preventing it from being perfect.

A bit easy and grindy. Uninspired and empty in comparison with the Galaxy games. A bit of a dissapointment. Mario controls ace, as expected, and the hat/capture mechanics were interesting but that’s about it for me. A pitty.

At best, the game is decent.

The Worlds are finally a little bit more imaginative again conceptwise instead of falling back into stereotypes, although there is still a little room for improvement (even weirder concepts for worlds would be amazing). Also the amount of worlds to explore with 10 kingdoms in total (not counting boss-platforms, tutorial worlds, etc) is fairly short, especially compared to other games in the series.

The music and graphics of the game are straight up amazing though. Very few Switch Games look and sound this good. Not much room for improvement here!

What I didn't like however was that the main-collectable in this game, "Power Moons", are a little too abundant to be exciting to collect. You receive Power-Moons for anything: Ground-Pounding on a shiny spot, planting a fruit, sitting on a bench... You can easily bypass huge chunks of levels including bosses(!) by just farming Power-Moons and then moving on to the next world. (Some players even reported accidentally skipping bosses due to this issue). The Game's Power-Moon-Counter doesn't even let you collect all the Power-Moons, since it will stop working once you hit 999 Moons. It would be nice to see the number of main-collectables be reduced and have them be a little bit more meaningful again in the next game.

Very charming, very addicting, very well-made. It was cool to experience a 3D Mario made in HD, 60fps, and modern lighting. The problem is that about 97% of this game was not challenging at all.

Out of 880 moons, maybe 15-20 put up a challenge. Moons lying everywhere: In the dirt, in the grass, under rocks, buying them with coins (why?). Not many moments that raise your blood pressure.

Even the special level was a long string of easy segments. The hard-mode bosses is what should've been the normal.

Mario's movement is the most mistake-forgiving and easy to execute to date. Controlling creatures with the cap was great, but so many missed opportunities to do cool challenges with them.

Balloon World also punishes you for being too good. People don't bother with hard balloons because the risk-reward and ranking system favor the easy ones.

Overall it's GREAT if you consider it more of an adventure game that won't scratch that action-platforming itch. This Mario game is more Zelda-like than Breath of the Wild, which went the survival crafting route. Devs will change a franchise to a completely different genre and get praised for "innovating".

In the end, Odyssey is accessible for the Animal Crossing audience and recommended for beginners. Mario 64 remains KING.

So much hype for this game but it doesn’t deserve it. Sure there is a lot of content but the quality is poor. Same old problems with camera controls that have always been an issue with 3D Mario games.

No imagination displayed in the level design, recycling world themes as always.

This game felt pretty short and 'lightly' done -- which is good in a way, it doesn't overstay... but also felt pretty expensive for the time considering comparable games. I'm also not a huge fan of Switch controls, which feel like toys compared to the old consoles, and almost every difficult bit in this is down to.

What started off as a fresh and new adventure turned very quickly into an unwelcome slog through more and more eye searingly bright "kingdoms" that had more frustrating moments than fun.
The movement tech felt clunky, Mario felt too heavy and unresponsive, the button combos for doing some of the more advanced movement was the opposite of enjoyable, and when there were ice physics... just no... stop.

It is very clear from this game and BotW that Nintendo has a long way to go when it comes to developing engaging and captivating open world games, because this felt like a less charming Banjo Kazooie in a bigger, less planned out as a cohesive world, sandbox with little nuggets sprinkled throughout.
It was like being given a meatball sub, but more than half the meatballs were just cubes of bread.
None of the parts of each level flowed into the next, it was all very segmented, and some of the "Kingdoms" made me want to leave literally as soon as possible. The "Kingdoms" were so unmemorable that I cannot even recall the names of them, where as for other Mario games they are stuck in my memory forever because they were fun as heck.
All the floor is poison zone was the worst offender, I think I spent all of 15 minutes in that world and I never ever ever want to go back. And Lunchmeat land made me want to gouge my eyes out.

The only zone I actually enjoyed was, of course, New Donk City, where it was abundantly clear that it had the vast majority of development time spent on it. Out of all the worlds that was the only one where exploring flowed naturally into more exploring, jumping from rooftop to rooftop was fantastically fun, and that was the only zone I got more moons than I needed to just peace out.

None of the bosses provided even the slightest challenge, I just stood facing them and waggled my left or right hand, depending on what flavor of waggle I was feeling like at the time, and they all fell first try.

All in all I was very disappointed by the bland, repetitive and all in all uninspired game-play.
It's a good looking game, it is good for a bit of fun, kids will love it.
But it is sadly only just a good game, nothing great, nothing outstanding.

Art style wise, everyone was concerned about those screenshots with mario next to a real human. They still look bad, they still aren't explained in any meaningful way. There are other spots too. You get a T-Rex and everything else is cartoony mario style, then this jurassic park style T-Rex just laying there. It's jarring. It doesn't fit. Much of the game is this way, where random assets look like they were done by someone with totally different art direction.
Controlling cappy feels more of a pain than a bonus. Two player mode doesn't make it any better, controls there also feel weird and unintuitive. It feels very gimmcky. Honestly since mario 64 they've tried to do weird random gimmicks like this and every time it feels forced.
On that point, why is there a world of hat people, who live in hat houses and fly hat airships? If cappy just happened to be some kind of magical hat I could buy into that, but a whole nation of hat people with a hat economy and hat children just seems really weird to me. The fact their world was nearly all black and white didn't seem to make sense. I thought when I first started it was meant to be some kind of after life and mario had died and had to fight his way back to life. I was disappointed immediately.
I don't need all these wacky new characters, or rabbit people. They could have been easily replaced with the koopa children and served the same purpose while reusing characters players know instead of introducing new ones that we'll likely never see again. There are so many weird random characters I get excited when I finally see a koopa troopa trying to hit me with a fireball, or a piranha plant snapping.
That all said, the levels are fun, if disjointed. You get a steady drip of things to find and unlock which is cool. None of them feel like places though, they all feel like amusement parks. Where I go ride to ride to beat a challenge and get a moon. Also, I don't know why we are collecting moons now. Stars seemed thematically correct before and only changed for the same of being different, which really feels like what a lot of this game is about.

It makes a lot of the same mistakes Sonic Adventure did, and mirrors the obvious lack of direction Sega had when making that game. They didn't know what to do with Sonic in a 3D world so they threw everything at him: Urban environments, spaceships, form-shifting monsters, robots, generic video game cliche #374. SMO feels very much like this, and to add insult to injury, it fails to even take into consideration the last 15 years of game design developments since Mario Sunshine. It is a game that would have felt right at home on the Gamecube with its small levels, world hub design, and distinct lack of intrinsic Mario game elements.

Is it a bad game? Certainly not. It's just not thoughtful enough to genuinely be worthy of Nintendo's flagship franchise. They've never been quite this careless with a Mario game, and it shows. Wait until this one is in the $30 bin.

It has the best movement/controls in the series, and it's actually insane what you can do with just Mario. There are some areas that take advantage of this, however, the game largely focuses on the new capture mechanic and exploration rather than Mario's movement and platforming. Most people have found this to be a positive change, but a lot of the captures are very simplistic in their design and often designated to a specific area. They are intended as solutions to the game's mostly easy platform challenges, and trying to beat these without the use of captures is way more fun for me, than playing the game the way it was intended.

Because it's more of a sandbox-like Mario like 64 and Sunshine, you are mostly searching larger hub-worlds for moons, the game's main collectible. Most of these areas are pretty flat and empty in their biggest areas, the biggest offender easily being the sand kingdom. There's 999 of them, and it's very easy to stumble upon one randomly. In the base-game, there's significantly fever available, but it's still fairly easy to meet the required amount for story-progression. Many moons are found in the bit scarce platforming challenges and side-rooms, but even more can be obtained through methods such as buying them from a shop, ground pounding boxes or are simply in plain sight. This is a problem because it becomes the bulk of the games content. If you just want to progress in the main game, it becomes really short, because the main objective never takes that long to beat, and the moons that are fun and challenging to get are easily missed, because players are likelier to find and grab many of the game's insanely easy moons. Especially since many of the easier methods of obtaining moons repeat themselves throughout the kingdoms. This is why it fails were 64 and Sunshine succeed, because in those games, the levels would vary in how you progress through them and obtain each individual collectible. Odyssey rarely does this, and when it does it's usually only for a boss.

The best parts of this game for me were the later sections of Bowser's kingdom and the Moon kingdoms, because while they were more linear, they provided are more consistent and rewarding sense of progression. That and Metro, in which way more moons felt unique and fun too obtain, and the main area was way more fun to move around in due to it's more vertical layout.

I understand that not everybody is going to share this opinion, since a lot of people like exploring every corner of the map. But i personally have a lot more more fun tackling a more constant barrage of obstacles that the level-based 3d Mario games like Galaxy or 3d World provide. Still, Odyssey is good game at it's core, with amazing presentation and charm. You can get a lot of fun out of this game, but for me, that fun is short-lived and mostly derives from things the game doesn't intend for me to do.

Pretty bland kingdom design, too many moons. It’s way too childish. Not entirely bad though. Kids will probably enjoy it.

It's a decent game, but nothing more. I read some reviewers say it's the best Mario to date, which just couldn't be further from the truth. Without a doubt the weakest Mario game I've ever played. A massive disappointment for me. Expand

This game is so overrated. It's really easy, and most moons are way too easy to find. This game was pretty fun to play through, but this game is short. Like ten hours short. I hear everyone going on about how amazing the endgame is! But it isn't fun. It's just a repititive collectathon. I had my fun with it. But its way too short.

The most underwhelming game I've played thru on Switch.
First of all, the game is painfully easy compared to other Mario titles. Easy enemies, easy bosses, and no real platforming puzzles or challenges either.
On top of that, the game worlds are tiny and uninteresting, and their visuals are WiiU level. Not one world impressed me in this game. Only fun in this game were the retro

Far cry from SM64 or Galaxy. 6/10 from me, and that's me being generous.

The gameplay is ok but it can get a bit repetitive and the game is way too short in my opinion. It can be fun to mess around in the game after you’ve finished it though.

Bella grafica, in perfetto stile Nintendo. Ottimo comparto audio. Alcune trovate davvero originali e gameplay semplicemente perfetto. Peccato per un livello di difficoltà davvero basso, che lo rende poco più che un cartone animato da guardare. Tutto troppo, troppo semplice. Sembra pensato per bambini.

This game is an ok game and in my opinion overhyped. The game is using the same mechanic that Nintendo's been using since Mario 64. The Story needs to change, add new villains (Sort of like SEGA does with Sonic Games) change the story a bit. The Only new mechanic in this game is the hat sidekick sort of like FLUDD from Super Mario. Sunshine but with different mechanics (Again same thing again). The Hat can control other enemies, including Bowser which is pretty neat. Aaaannnddd that's about it. Not much more which is pretty sad. But the visuals are impressive, the game looks really good and colorful like Mario Galaxy and Sonic Colors. I love how you go to different worlds and even a city although Mario looks out of place in the city it makes it good since Mario is supposed to be in a different world. Overall this game has its ups and downs but its just in the middle for me, like yeah its fun for a while and then it just gets kinda boring. Game is ok

This game includes many good mechanics, but is not as good as it promised to be. Many moons that appear after you beat the game are very boring to get, and some easy. I think that Nintendo should have reduced the moons that appear after you complete the game.

Also, the bosses are thrash and the Bowser battle is the worst in all Mario series (in my opinion). When I ended my play

This game definitely isn't a Masterpiece, it isn't even better than 64, actually it barely manages to be better than Sunshine, why? Let me explain: for starters, the game presents itself as a spiritual succesor to 64 and Sunshine but it actually resembles more the Galaxy games (in a bad way), because it's main mission moons function almost always the same as a mission in Galaxy (and even the level design is basic at the level of a world in that game but lacking its difficulty) + you can grab some other moons on the way (that resemble the blue coins from Sunshine A LOT), and guess what, you get moons here for everything, a moon that is just floating in a random place that's incredibly easy to reach is worth the same as a main mission moon or a challenge moon (and even those aren't really challenging), and that just makes getting them rather a hassle than a satisfactory reward, so, if you go completely straight forward and ignore all these moons that aren't really worth your time, the game would be one of the shortest of all, to the point that it's got some of the shortest worlds out of all 3D Mario games (also most of it's worlds actually resemble a level from galaxy more than a world from 64, since almost all are just a series of platforms and/or get from point A to point B). But if instead you decide for some reason to 100% complete it, then you're in for an unsatisfactory LONG game with tons of trash moons and wasted potential, because odyssey actually succeeds in some things like:
-Movement, Mario's moveset in this game is by far the best ever seen, but that's just even more frustrating because the game never elaborates on this or gives you more than 2/3 challenges that actually take some skill (2/3 out of 820 moons!!).
    -The soundtrack is really good.
-It's got some fun little details like the fact you can dress Mario in many ways and personalize the odyssey.
-And of course it looks nice graphically.
But other than that, with all of it's flawed content, this game is an amalgamation of ideas that never elaborate enough on themselves and at the end you only get a "tutorial version" of them, as i said, lots of wasted potential.
But well, at the end the game itself isn't awful even with all those flaws, it just feels like a lackluster and doesn't live up to past 3D Mario games, i hope the developers acknowledge all these flaws for the second game or whatever, because at it's best this game is kind of a seven or eight, although i'm gonna give it a six cause its score is highly inflated by probably kids that are experiencing their first open world game or weird adults that are too blinded by nostalgia.
If this is your first 3D Mario game or your first open world game experience i recommend you to try other games to see what i mean.

You sort of have to make your own challenge with speedruns or the annoying multiplayer game.

Anyway I think this game is mediocre at best and is a reflection of Nintendo's declining game design.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]
