This game is great. I used to not like it that much because of it being more of a collecathon rather than a platformer. The more I play it, the more I like it and it's really fun to capture enemies as well as collect moons different ways.

It's good, but it's not Galaxy-good. A bit too open world and not enough platforming for me, still a must-play though if you have a Switch but I'm not convinced I'll ever revisit it.

Excellent Game. Such beautiful platforming in a tight and pretty game. I do wish there was a mode between "assist" and normal mode, because i spend a lot of time listless.... not knowing what to do. Every bit as good as mario 64. Truly a great game.

Quite possibly the best 3D Mario game to date. Everything that was an issue with the previous games; Mario 64's age, Sunshine's jankiness, and the Galaxy games' linearity were all fixed.

Although for this to be a review, i have to also mention the bad parts
There are way too many moons, sure it helps with the exploration, but it just doesnt feel as special as something like the shines from sunshine, the shiveria kingdom is just underwhelming compared to the other ones and the story could have bent better, and the broodal boss fights are just too easy, and appear way too much.

However, there are a few Kingdoms (which is what the islands are called in this game) that needed some extra work. The sand kingdom, while still good, had a lot of empty space in it and the Cloud kingdom is so short, bland and awful. There are a ridiculous amount of moons to find and while that is not a big deal because you don't need them all to finish the story, it can make going for 100% pretty annoying and tedious. The amount of costumes you can get for Mario is cool (Finally, coins are actually useful for once in a mainline Mario game!!!)and the amount of Easter eggs in this game is great as well. Apart from that though, this really is a masterpiece and I still score it a 9.5/10 (because for some stupid reason we can only give whole numbers as scores on Metacritic). Expand

    - Fun at every moment

    Cons :

This is probably the most fun game to just move your character and play around, since his moveset is full, although some locked behind some questionable motion implementation. So why don't I give it a 10? Well, you see, I've gotten all 999 moons in this game, and although most of them are fun to collect, some missions repeat themselves so much to the point where around half of them are filler that impacts the fun a bit. This entry bring some uniqueness by redefining what Mario's power-up can be. It also introduces very advanced roster of moves that you can perform but most of which are optional, and only of interest to hardcore Mario players that want to master the game. There also seems to be just right level of precision required for its platforming heavy moments, which could be taken for granted by most of the player, but some 3d games proven it can be done really well or really badly, and you only pay attention to the latter.

Only critique to the game would be that some of most difficult parts of the game, are challenging because the span for very long, and require you to do some very old sequences all over again to be beaten which gets quite tedious, and leads to frustration requiring taking breaks from the game in order not to break the game-pad.

they've somehow managed to pretty much perfect Mario's moveset, it will feel satisfying to experience players as well as to casual ones. the controls are really fluid and responsive and pulling off several moves one after the other feels so gratifying, almost as if you were a speedrunner.

the level design is also excellent, every world feels unique and fleshed out, and the moons are fun to collect (i've seen many people criticize the fact there are so many moons compared to other games, saying that it devalues them, but i think Nintendo made the right call here considering how much bigger each world/kingdom is)

overall, this game is fun all the way through and only became frustrating at the very end, when playing through the "Dark Side" (of the Moon) (but don't worry, this world is completely optional, as it's unlocked by beating the main story.

honestly, outside of the fairly easy boss fights (at least they added new foes instead of the Koopalings and/or Bowser Jr. again) and the fairly linear progression (not in the worlds themselves, but going from one to the other; you'll visit them in a predetermined order and will only get a split path twice in the game.

in conclusion, i can't recommend Super Mario Odyssey enough to... pretty much anyone who has any interest in platformers or Mario. this game has surpassed its predecessors, including Super Mario 64, in so many ways, and those who think Mario 64 is better are just blinded by nostalgia (heck, you can even unlock Peach's Castle and a Mario 64 disguise in Odyssey if you really miss this game).

I recently went back and replayed this game, and let me tell you, this is the best 3D Mario in my opinion apart from Galaxy.

The movement is flawless, the gameplay is amazing and this deserves a sequel.

I mean yes, this is a good game. Very good in fact. A really solid, highly polished 3D platformer that ticks a lot of Mario boxes, but I can't be the only one who sees the very obvious flaws here?

Like the difficulty level, maybe? I'm not a "git good" type of guy, but this is very, very simple throughout and takes very few chances with the difficulty curve. I get that this makes it accessible to all and that's the main aim of a family title like this, but aside from interesting game mechanics (which are numerous to be totally fair), the difficulty makes the whole game feel one-paced. You'd expect the bosses to provide the challenge at the end of a level maybe, but no - they are by and large the same uninspired 3-hit-and-done affairs from Mario 64, which was the biggest weakness of that game - even if you're a rabid Mario fan, surely you can admit that these should have been improved big time by now?

Or maybe a bit of critique about the moons? You know, how unlike the stars in Mario 64, where they were a legit objective and felt like an achievement grabbing each one, the moons here are tossed around like candy and it's harder to NOT collect them? The game would have been infinitely more enjoyable if the moons had more of a point and there were far fewer of them - yes, I get that it's a collect-a-thon, but even Yooka-Laylee and, more obscure but still very good, Poi got this balance better.

The abundance of moons plays in to my next big gripe with it - the length of the thing at its' core. Yes, collecting as many moons as possible artificially extends the game, but you don't have to (and indeed I can't see why you'd want to), and you can beat the game pretty quickly as a result.

The levels themselves are hit and miss. New Donk City is fantastic, whereas others feel cut and paste jobs; like they are tickboxing what should be in a Mario game and going through the motions.

I know the above makes it look like I hate the game, but I really don't. It really is well polished, the controls are sublime, the outfit changes are inspired and add a myriad of options to game play, the trainsitions to 2D are flawless and add an extra level of depth, the visuals are the best since Sunshine and the whole thing does a tremendous job of building a pseudo-open-world. It is very much a very good game.

But an instant classic? The best Mario ever? It's... really not. Honestly. It's good enough to recommend, but people have gone way, way over the top on praise for it. For the Switch itself, it's not as good as Zelda: BotW, and it's arguably not even as good as Mario+Rabbids. In terms of Mario games, it's not as good as Sunshine, 64, 3, World... It's just a very good yet second tier Mario game. If you love Mario, you'll love this - just don't go in expecting to be blown away, which is the danger if you're taking the frankly odd review scores into account.

Pros: Great level's, in-depth secrets, replayability, music.

I would of given this a 9/10 however the required motion controls knocked it down one for me, it really limits the switches "pick up and go" style.

A perfect game for younger games, leaves a little to be desired for older ones in search of some more difficulty, I think they could have made the bosses a little more difficult but I understand they wouldn't want to alienate younger gamers who own the switch and older gamers can find that difficulty in indie titles.

The game also has a pretty good storyline with Mario's New friend the Hat, and plenty of collectibles with the moons and purple coins in all the different worlds. Collecting the coins to unlock different outfits and treasures is sure to provide plenty of end-game content for those complaining the game is too short. While I don't think Mario Odyssey deserves a 9 (and a 10 I think is all but impossible on this platform) an 8 is where it truly sits and is definitely the best entryway to Switch gaming for gamers of all ages and backgrounds.

This is just my opinion of course, but Odyssey just isn’t up there with the best Mario games. The controls are good, though some of the motion gimmicks are unreliable, and a couple of the Cappy possessions bland. The artwork is nice, but can often feel out of place or thematically confused. The after game does introduce more challenging things... but not exactly exciting ones.

The game starts strong, the middle becomes rather boring and at times a drudge, and the ending is, OK I guess? It just doesn’t have the ingenuity of the Galaxy games, or the hectic multiplayer fun of 3D World. It’s not a bad game - Mario games at their worst are better than most of what else is out there - but it is a bit of a let down.

Not as good as I was expecting, and not surpassing Sunshine and 3D World as my favorite Mario games. I miss having a button for an 2nd speed of run, like in 3D world, and the levels didn't seem to be designed in a way that I find fun, like Sunshine's were.

If they actually took the time to play the game and follow its story and mechanics you would see its no where near that. The game mechanics are top notch along with the game play...THAT IS ABOUT IT! The story IS GARBAGE! Not to mention alot of really bad glaring issues that break the story...1 you cant breath on the moon but lets over look that...2 on the last level you are excaping a collapsing moon? then when you get out your on the moon and everythign is all of a sudden fine? THE ****

Like i said the game play n mechanics are great but it completely **** on Mario lore and story...so no a perfect game would have ZERO issues....THAT is a 10/10 or 100...but just giving it a 10/10 or 100 for the sake of it being a new Mario or Nintendo game? COMMON PEOPLE! Its a solid 8

On the other hand, you could beat Zelda fairly quickly as well and still have a lot to do afterwards, so maybe Nintento is following that same "playground" philosophy.

It was also kind of repetitive. Get to a kingdom, defeat it's boss, which opens up the kingdom so you can explore and find more moons. A couple of the boss fights are repeated too. The boss fights are also kind of easy, and since I normally hate boss fights, I had no problem with that.

The game blows its best kingdom about half way through, and nothing after that except the final stage can really compete. It's a level that felt like a grand finale, which makes me wonder if they shifted things around post-development.

Its very easy as compared to other Mario games. If you try to 100% the first kingdom, you basically get enough moons to sail right through the next kingdoms. Nothing really feels earned. Even some of the trickier platforming areas can be "cheated" with no penalty... In Mario 64, every door you opened felt earned, Mario Odyssey just lets you blast through them.

Saying that all that, this isn't my favorite Mario game, but it was still fun. It felt like a celebration of The Mario games even paying tribute to his origins. You discover a lot of elements and characters from previous games. I still felt compelled to explore and find Moons. You'll get a lot of ah-ha! moments as you play.

There was still a little satisfaction of finding those hidden moons that years of Mario gave me the instincts to find. Pushing up against walls, or trying to jump up above the screen to a secret ledge were second nature. Even when you're done, you still have tons of moons to find and more "mini kingdoms" to unlock.

So that's why I'm giving this an 8. It's not perfect. I doubt I'll remember it much once I'm done with it. It's still fun, but it doesn't quite achieve the magic that Mario 64 set the standard for years ago. I still recommend you pick it up, as it is a must-have for Switch owners.

The game is mostly easy and the boss fights follow a clear pattern, but there Re some difficulty spikes here and there. I’d still recommend to casual gamers though.

It definitely feels like a successor to Super Mario 64, but I found Super Mario 64 to be better. Super Mario Odysseus major problem for me is that the worlds are so small and claustrophobic. I feel like I could get the hype behind this game if the worlds were huge and immersive, but usually around the time you’re getting into a world is around the time you’ve seen all there is to see. There are hidden rooms and hidden moons here and there, but for the most part the worlds are very small. I’d even say Super Mario 64 has bigger worlds than this game. And despite this game playing wonderfully and has neat details even down to the HD ruble, I cannot give it higher than an 8. I got all moons, coins, souvenirs, music, etc in about 55 hours. Main story itself only takes about 10. For scale, I’ve done over 200 hours on Breath of the Wild. 55 hours for 100% completion in my opinion is quite a short game. Between Breath of the Wild and this, is much higher recommend Breath of the Wild, but if you have that and want something else to hold you over, I’d recommend this, but $60 is a bit steep for smallish worlds.

Now, later in the game, for those aiming to get all the moons, it gets much more challenging and fun - and sometimes frustrating, too. The good side of that game is that it offers a lot of post-game content and replay value, even for experienced platforming gamers. After 30 hours of playtime, I collected about 2/3 of all the moons and I'm still having a lot of fun with the game. I'm recommending this one for everyone, but most gamers will likely have to spend several hours before getting into the fun stuff.

It is the old classic Mario story, Bowser kidnapped princess Peach and Mario is there for her rescue. To accomplish that, you must search for moons. Well and there are lot's of moons. I really thought that I already found many of them, but than realized that just in this "world"/"level" there were 69 moons ... and you only need a fraction of them to continue the story.
And that the biggest flaw of the game in my opinion. Yes you can try to get them all but there are so many that you get the feeling they were just positioned so you have to do something after the story is over. It's more or less like getting all the flags in the old Assassins Creed game. It just isn't fun after you got 40 in the current world. Yes there are different worlds that also have many moons, but at some point the fun getting them is just over.
It's a good game, but not as good as the hype promised.

The adventure begins in the midst of a battle between Mario and Bowser that ends with – gasp! – the latter defeating the former and making off with Princess Peach, whom he intends to marry just as soon as he can gather everything he needs to put on a top notch wedding. In many ways, Super Mario Odyssey is the weirdest that Mario has been in years. The game takes place across more than a dozen Kingdoms, many of which feature some of the sorts of themes you might expect from a Mario title – ice and lava, forests and spooky levels full of darkness.
The problem about this game, ITS TOO EASY for veteran players, the lack of challenge are everywhere and the Bowser's formula is kinda annoying yet. There's a constant back and forth between education and challenge as the game teaches its mechanics. At first, discovery is the game's reward to you – then challenge becomes its own reward as Odyssey tests that discovery. This is what Mario has done for 30 years more effectively than almost any other franchise or idea, and it's just as successful in Odyssey. It's present in the platforming sections, which avoid the mistakes of other games deftly (most of the time), but the purest articulations of that philosophy are in Odyssey's boss fights. But if that’s the worst complaint to be levelled at Super Mario Odyssey, it’s in pretty good shape. Indeed, one might go so far as to call it one of 2017’s essential gaming experiences. It will remind you of everything you’ve ever loved about Nintendo platforming games while simultaneously creating new Mario memories you’ll cherish for years to come. If you needed a reason beyond Zelda to invest in a Switch, this ought to suffice.

You guessed it. Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser and it's time for the mustached hero to save the day again. Admittedly this is my first time picking up another mario platformer since probably Super Mario 64 back in 1996. I was more hooked on the party games and the Paper Mario series versus the genre staple.

The new design for Odyssey is based around your new friend Cappy. Your old red hat bites the dust and you meet a race of hat people who just happen to be able to turn into special hats. The special twist comes from you can throw your hat on to a bunch of different things in the game. Mario physically takes it over like some voodoo mind control, while forcing all things to don a mustache. A T-rex with a mustache. Hysterical.

Platformers stick to the tried and true recipe. Collect so many of these items while maneuvering around tricky landscapes and enemies. With a skill that needs to be precise otherwise a quick death and starting back from the beginning. Odyssey hides a number of the special star items cleverly around each world. You only need about 10% of the total stars to progress through each world if you want to rush down Bowser. For the collectors out there, there is definitely a time sink waiting if you want to 100% the game.

Overall I enjoyed my time jumping around the different creative worlds in Odyssey. The levels were beautiful and all based around the theme of the world. Samurai, Dinosaurs, Snow etc. There were even outfits you can spend coins on to buy world outfits and make your Mario look flashy. Or spend 1000 coins to have your Mario run around in his boxers. Whatever your heart desired.
The annoyances came from the 3D platforming. Gone are the easy days of 2D side scrolling where you just worried about forwards and backwards. It takes precise control making the timed jumps needed in most levels, using the switch joy-cons as intended, one wrong slight angle and you are plummeting to your death. Jumping down from a height and thinking you will land safely, only to overshoot it by a hair and again….die. Frustrating but not terrible.

This is not a traditional Mario, its a pseudo open world game where you search for hidden moon stones. Some are hidden, some are in hard to reach places, some are quests and some are held by bosses. So far no mushrooms or fire flowers instead you have a form of hit points and throw your hat to attack like flower power.

As an adult the game is quite easy. having 3 or 6 hit points allows for many mistakes and even if you die the penalty is very small. There is no life limit and you re-spawn at your last checkpoint, which there are plenty of. In fact since its an open world game and you often have to back track to explore other paths, sometimes dying is welcome.

Boss battles so far have been quite easy. Deaths have only come from misplaced jumps into pits or "camera" deaths where you cant see whats going on because the camera angle is fighting you.

There is a "shake" controller mechanic that allows for special moves and auto targeting. There is no non-motion version of this control, even if you turn motion controls off. Fortunately so far the game is so easy that this mechanic can be considered optional. If you plan to use the shake mechanic it makes the game difficult to play in switch tablet mode and found my self struggling to balance the tablet on my lap while holding the controllers. Instead now I opt to play on the television

All in all the game is fun to play though not very challenging. If you are looking for a relaxing game that you can spend hours exploring then this is great. I feel this game does not stand up to Nintendo high expectations and doesn't provide an adult challenge. Its a good game but falls short of greatness.

The readiness with which the game spits Power Moons at you diminishes the feeling of accomplishment somewhat, with upwards of 60 of them on some levels -- but there's enough of them to keep completionists scouring for quite some time, and multiple opt-in hint systems to keep you from getting stonewalled.

It's less remarkable a shift and revitalization of the IP as Breath of the Wild was, there are some pronounced annoyances, but as another solid entry in the mainline open-world Mario series, it's hard not to recommend.

Super Mario Odyssey is a game that easily lives up to the Super Mario title - and is an excellent addition to the 3D lineup - if you own a Switch, this game is worth the purchase. Now let's get into the details.

Super Mario Odyssey is a game that easily lives up to the Super Mario title - and is an excellent addition to the 3D lineup - if you own a Switch, this game is worth the purchase. Now let's get into the details.

    A: Music/Sounds

Unlike Breath of the Wild which had a rather lacking soundtrack, Mario Odyssey has a soundtrack which easily surpasses most of the other games in the Super Mario franchise. To be specific, I'm referring to the 2 incredible vocal tracks in the game - a very jazzy style which really feels refreshing to see in a Mario game.

The individual sounds aren't outstanding - I mean, there's not much to be good at - you have Mario noises, coin sound effects and the like.

    10/10

    B: Graphics

The graphics on Super Mario Odyssey are by far the best out of any Nintendo Switch game that we have seen thus far. Mario has never looked this good - and Nintendo knows it, since they added the surprisingly fun Photo Studio mode. Mario's nose literally has wobble physics. Need I say more?

All the environments look superb. On the top of my head, I really can't think of anything specific that had poor graphics. I'm literally not lying when I say that these graphics look like they're from a PS4 game - they're that good.

10/10 WITH my Thumbs Up of Approval

    C: Gameplay

The gameplay is as superb as ever. Platforming feels smooth and you never feel like you're accidentally misjudging where you're going to land. Every location in the game has a large variety of Moons to collect - which is fun, and adds dozens of hours of content, but I can't help but miss the level design of previous 3D Mario games like Super Mario Sunshine - where you'd have a specific objective to, say, clean a certain eel's teeth underwater.

Additionally, there are a few kingdoms in the game which are pretty much only Boss Kingdoms and have barely any Moons. I kind of wish that they didn't introduce kingdoms for them to almost be immediately dropped.

The shops which allow you to purchase outfits for Mario and souvenirs for his Odyssey ship feel really refreshing - it seems like the developers took some ideas from Breath of the Wild in the dressing-up aspect.

7/10 - Fun gameplay and collectibles, some underused kingdoms and not enough real missions

    D: Story

The story in this game isn't bad by any means. It's fun to essentially chase Bowser across the entire world to rescue Peach - and it's not like the story of previous Mario games were much more detailed...

The little mini-stories that are occurring in many of the kingdoms are also really fun to participate in, but they sort of take away the urgency that the story SHOULD have - it feels more like Mario is taking that vacation he wanted to have in Super Mario Sunshine.

The final boss battle/ending is really something special though - definitely one of the absolute highest points in the game, and is much, much better than pretty much every other 3D Mario title.

One thing that the game actually has which is really unique is the post-story content. In most 3D Mario titles, the game will pretty much forget that you ever rescued Princess Peach and she'll revert back to being imprisoned. In Super Mario Odyssey, things take a very welcomed turn of events - and once you beat the game, it will stay beaten. The post-story content isn't the best in the world, but it's certainly better than having none at all.

Unfortunately, I feel that the story is a little bit of a step down from Super Mario Galaxy - which easily had the best story of any Mario game ever. I mean, can things get any better than saving the whole galaxy whilst simultaneously rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser? The book on Rosalina's backstory was also really touching - and it was certainly a surprise to realise that Mario games could have such touching moments. As a result of this, it's a little sad to see just another super happy Mario game with no real dramatic moments at all - it's not surprising, but I feel that Mario games could use more moments like this.

9/10 - Post-story content, fun story - but nothing really new is brought to the table.

In conclusion, this is a really fun game which will provide you with many hours of content - after getting the game to 100% completion myself, I had racked up 75 hours of gametime. If you have a Switch, you should get this game - don't just beat the story though, as this game is worth getting to 100% completion. It's definitely a worthy entry to the Super Mario franchise.

8/10 - Incredible graphics, unforgettable music, fun gameplay and a good story - with some aspects leaving something to be desired, however.

I have played all of the main Mario games starting with the very first one where I started on the 8bit. And over the last 30 years, I have seen the transformation of these Mario games become amazing! I love Mario and the entire cast (Luigi, Princess, Bowser, Yoshi, Toad, and etc.)!

After clearing the story mode, I am now going back and getting more stars but I am feeling like its a chore and not fun. Having said that while I love Mario Odyssey, I personally think its missing several things to the game - creativity! I loved the Galaxy series much more because the each of the planets offered a different perspective and challenge. This seemed more like the same with different setup - Fire, Ice, Water, and etc. I enjoyed this Mario but I don't think it its a Masterpiece that everyone is calling it. I think the Galaxy series was way more fun and challenging! The story in the Galaxy was so much better too! This game seemed a little to basic and entry level for Mario players except the DARK Moon!

Story - 7 - Lack thereof. Could have had more characters (Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Toad) to play a more important part in the game
Controls - 6 - the controls is the reason why I die most of the time. The camera is not fixed but it should be able to determine how far or away much easier from certain things.
Gameplay - 8 - seemed almost the same for each world using the magic hat. It's gets a little old. I wished they pushed more toward having different characters and their abilities to help Mario on his quest.
Graphics 9 - great graphics and 60 frames is great both on TV and Handheld
Music - 9 - Wished they had more of it!
    Overall - 8

It seemed as though they were running out of ideas and so they just rushed the star idea to place them everywhere. MORE IS NOT BETTER! And wished they did more on the story and interaction of each characters. I think the professional reviewers aren't being really honest if they have played all of the Mario games this is definitely not the best. Having played all of the main Mario games I can see the differences and creativity in each. The "magic hat" while it was fun I think they over played it too long and shouldn't be the entire game.

The costumes as someone else mentioned, while they are nice and fun to look, but weren't integral part in the game! They could have easily made the costumes important to the game mechanics which I agree could have helped break the "HAT" trick idea. I felt that the hat was a great idea but it was over used and wished they would the outfits play a part into the game!!

I think Nintendo doing great things and love my Switch, but this is just not a Masterpiece as the Galaxy Series are! And to be honest its definitely NOT best in the Mario series and people are over exuberant about playing another Mario game and the reason they are raving about it, But after the dust settles they will realize that the Galaxy, Sunshine, and Mario N64 games were much better in design and creativity.

I agree, Super Mario Odyssey is a very good game. However, critically reviewed to be a 97/100 is a little ridiculous. The nostalgic parts that tie into previous Mario games are also very soothing to the soul. It is a must play for lovers of Mario and just relaxed fun.
Here is where I have to dispel this almost perfect 10 for 10 score. First let be saying that I am a hard critic. I have never given a game a 10. For a game to be a 10, it has to be perfection level on all my categories. Mario gets a perfection for level design and performance. In those, it was no doubt a masterpiece. Game play was Exceptional (9), but where it lacked was the shoehorning motion controls and most objectives were purely centered around collect em style play. Nothing unique here, and the reason game play gets a 9 is because of the uniqueness of accomplishing those goals.

    It's detractors are the following
    - Story (same Peach has been kidnapped, go save her) Nothing new, but worth a 7 because at least they're consistent.
    - Graphics (Clean and smooth, but we're still working off the Swtich here, and will never be able to reach the potential Mario can with an underpowered console)
    - Collect-em gameplay. Game is just centered around get power moons from this world, go to the next, power moons, move on, power moons, move on. Very redundant.

Overall, the game feels like a true next evolution of Mario games, but does not stand out among all other games to warrant the near perfect review scores it receives from nostalgia driven critics.

Un buen juego que trae el gusto de Mario64, cosa que hacía tiempo se había perdido. Solo lo encuentro un poco demasiado fácil, por el resto muy buen juego, el toque de pasar de 2D a 3D es una muy buena idea.

It's a fantastic game. Nintendo took its history to heart with this title, and it shows. I can't explain how much I love the 2D/3D blended level design. That was a stroke of genius. It's so good, even the water levels are a joy to play.

My only real criticisms are power moons and the Broodals. I like that I don't have to exit and re-enter to get another power moon. I don't like how

I like that I don't have to exit and re-enter to get another power moon. I don't like how cheap they are to get. In 64 and Sunshine you had semi-elaborate plots playing out for each shine, and other shines you could get as a side objective. Power moons are just rewards for doing obscure tasks around the kingdom.

Broodals were fun the first time around, boring the second time, and annoying the third time. Why recycle the same fight THREE separate times? Defeat all four of them, rinse and repeat. Nothing changes.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
