Has the spirit of Mario 64 with some touch of the 8 bit era making it very magical and beautiful, i personally really liked it but it felt way too easy...

I find it strange how much I love Super Mario Odyssey.

It’s your standard Modern Mario game; you run, you jump, you kill little mushroom people under the command of a giant fire-breathing-demon tortoise in the confines of a claustrophobic level roughly three and a half jumps in length. And yet, there is something about the atmospheric sound track, brightly colored visuals, and happy go lucky shouting of the small Italian plumber from Japan.
The game clearly draws inspiration from Super Mario 64 with multiple hub levels that you travel through, collecting enough Power Stars – er Moons in this one for… some reason? – to move to the next level. I wasn’t a fan when Nintendo did this with Super Mario 64 and I often find myself wondering why everyone is so crazy for the old 64 Classic. Maybe it is because I took my rose-colored glasses off about the time Nintendo re-released Major’s Mask for the 3DS, but other that the evocation of childhood nostalgia, I don’t have anything positive to say about games from the N64 Era.

And yet, even though Odyssey is following the same formula as it’s N64 counterpart, I find myself enjoying it immensely. I do wish the game lasted a little bit longer, all in all the story runs you roughly 2-3 hours with the rest of the replayability coming from the Power Moon Collect-athon that follows. While it’s fun to go around trying to find all the Moons you can, I also feel a little jaded at the fact that there wasn’t more to do. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting a 30+ hour long story line typical of a JRPG, it just feels lacking. Considering the hype that was built up for Super Mario Odyssey since its initial announcement, I feel more should have been done to increase the length of the game.

Although the Worlds of Odyssey are small they are packed with things to do. Each nook and cranny are filled with different things to do in order to collect the Power Moons. So much so that you might almost consider it oversaturated, but at the same time; the oversaturation of things to do makes up for the lack of room to move and run.

I think the thing that has drawn me into the game the most is the music and sound design. Although the sound of Mario triple jumping can become a bit tiresome after you’re required to do it 13 times in a row; there is no doubt that it is an iconic sound and Odyssey would have suffered without it. My hat is off (ha) to Nobuyoshi Suzuki on his work. Each song for each world and each event feels unique while also drawing inspiration from previous titles to not only give you the feeling of a Mario game but the feeling of something exciting and new.

I really don’t know what else I can say about Super Mario Odyssey other than this; The game is by no means a disappointment, but it is a little disappointing – if that made sense? I went into Super Mario Odyssey expecting a Mario game and in all honesty, that’s what I got. I just wish that with all the hype, all the buildup leading me into Odyssey there was more to it. I do still recommend it to any fan of Mario, Nintendo, or the Switch; but I’m not sure that I can recommend it to anyone else. In addition to that, if you were thinking about buying yourself a Switch, just to enjoy Super Mario Odyssey (like I did with Zelda) I’m not sure I can recommend doing that either. The game is good, but I don’t feel it’s good enough to drop a couple hundred dollars on.

    - All of the “cap-tured” enemies control very well and add a lot of variety to gameplay and puzzle solving
    - There are no hard game overs so making small platforming mistakes that result in death will only cost players a handful of coins
    - The addition of costumes is great and it’s nice that they don’t have unique attributes, otherwise you’d have to run back and forth from the Odyssey to complete different puzzles
    - Everything about the ending sequence on the moon
    - There’s plenty to explore and collect after the story is over and there is a ton of incentive to continue the journey after the credits roll
    - Great Soundtrack; Completely Orchestrated
    - The hidden photos make great use of the Switch’s screenshot feature

    Mixed:
    - The story is lacking a lot of charm that other titles brought to the series … but that ending sequence on the moon made up for it all brought it all back!
    - You can blast through the story in about 4 or hours if you really wanted to but there’s so much to collect along the way; players should take their time
    - You can only get certain moons after the story ends, which they don’t make very clear; on the other hand, players can see the worlds grow before their eyes, which makes them even bigger than they initially appear
    - There are over 800 moons to collect but a lot of them can just be purchased from shops post game for 100 coins each

    Bad:
    - Some actions can only be triggered by motion controls and they can’t be adjusted in the options
    - Some worlds are only used for a single boss fight which was disappointing considering the potential of their themes

Absolutely excellent. Mario Odyssey's hat "Cappy" adds new jump mechanics and the ability to play as various enemies. It was simply delightful the whole way through, and the Balloon World is not only a great addition of gameplay, but also grants much-needed coins for those striving for the 100% mark. A great Mario title, and a must-play for any Switch owner.

Story - As common to the classic Mario game. Its story didnt really stay away from its generic line. It is still the same Mario saves Peach from Bowser kind of story. The main difference though is the story does not only revolve now with those three with the addition of Mario's new mate Cappy and other Hat like characters. Its ok but still standard. Thus, an OK score of 7/10

Gameplay - Now this is the game's main strength, Mario games has always been the first in line in platforming/puzzle games and this game isnt different, the puzzles are awesome, many, unique and keeps you interesting until the end of the game. Its an added bonus that you have like 800+ moons to collect which makes it more worthwhile. In addition, I love how they somehow delved into semi open world genre which has different and unique worlds to explore. A very good mixture of 3d and 2d gameplays elements was executed in whole. It is also good that an addition of cappy usages was added also as well as its possesion/capture mechanic which gives you a chance to use enemies in game. All in all, a masterpiece in this aspect. A score of 10/10

Graphics - I love how the different worlds of Mario Odyssey is different and unique with each other and has different colors (though the colors looks plain and lazy.) Design though of the characters, enemies and npcs was for me is pretty below average as well. However, I love how the game is 60 fps and you could really enjoy it smoothly. Thus, a score of 8/10

Sound - I love the music of this game. I love its in game songs, the music of each and every world and the sound effects of its gameplay. Kinda childish but doesnt really affect it much. As to the character voice though like the zelda games are all awfully done with childish moans or scream. It is still stupid how after all this years Nintendo is still Lazy to hire voice actors to add identity to their characters. Therefore, a score of 7/10

Fun factor - A new scoring system on my review. Now despite all of what I have said above. I really enjoyed my whole experience in the game. Athough personally this game is much more easier and forgiving compared to its galaxy counterparts. It is still decent cause its fun. Regardles, personally it is one of my GOTY candidates for this year together with other great games like Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Divinity Original Sin II. Thus, a score of 10/10.

    Average score - 8.4

It has the best visuals of any Mario game, it has the most unique gameplay mechanics, the best bosses, the most diverse environments, one of the better soundtracks. From a technical perspective it has almost no obvious flaws and the team at Nintendo deserves a lot of praise for what it accomplished. So why did I give it an 8 and not a 9 or 10? Basically, because there is more to a great game than technical achievements and a lack of flaws. This is probably the best year I can recall for games. The bar has been raised across the board. I gave this game an 8 because compared to the other great games this year it is shallow. Outside of its gameplay and production values it just isn't exceptional. I spent over 100+ hours on my first play through of Breath of the Wild same with Persona 5, those gave me more and left me with something. I beat the main story for Mario Odyssey in 2 days without a challenge. I am not even very good at Mario games but even I found the puzzles and platforming pretty mild compared to past entries. There are far more moons than there were stars in past Mario games but earning them is far simpler and many don't even require you to complete a challenge. Don't get me wrong, some of them are extremely fun but very few left me with a sense of accomplishment. I enjoyed the game a lot but compared to many of the other great games this year such as Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, etc. Mario Odyssey just lacks depth. The game is great and I recommend it to most people. in terms of fun factor it is excellent but it just lacks substance compared to other games that I put in the 9+ category.

Gameplay wise Mario Odyssey is masterful. The hat possession mechanic is amazing and definitely one of the most interesting gameplay mechanics that I have ever seen. The game does a great job of making each transformation unique and has multiple transformations that surprised me. In terms of Mario's base controls, they are very similar to past 3d entries but they are very precise and I found the controls to be even better than they were in Sunshine and Galaxy. Another great addition to the game is the fast travel system, it saves tons of time and makes moving around the levels very quick. Even the swimming controls, which have been pretty frustrating in the past I found alright in this entry. It is really nice that there is a use for coins, but the rewards are mostly cosmetic. It would have been cool if the costumes actually had a use beyond looks.

In terms of progression and story, this is way below average. The story is almost the same as the other Mario games. The one thing that Odyssey does story wise that I liked was the way that it connects Bowser's actions to each kingdom. The ending also has one creative twist that I thought was clever. The game progresses smoothly and never drags but it doesn't really stop to make many moments memorable either. It's fast and furious from start to finish. People often say that story doesn't matter in platformers, I disagree because other games have great gameplay and still have good story lines. People complain when Zelda's story sucks and take off points but Mario always gets a pass. A great story adds something to the game so it matters. If a great game with no story is compared to a game with great gameplay and a great story the game with both deserves the higher score. There are plenty of platformer games with better stories than this one. Donkey Kong 64, Psychonauts, Prince of Persia and even Banjo Kazooie all have better stories than this.

The worlds are pretty good but very few blew me away. There are a lot of them and usually each one had a few cool features but within an hour or so I usually found I wanted to move on to the next one.

Visually, this is the best Mario game by far and one of the best looking games of the year. Every material looks believable, the fx are great and well used, and some of the backgrounds are breath taking. The menus are simple yet appealing. This is a very cartoony game so it doesn't have the same level of detail as some of the games on the PS4 but everything looks clean and the level of detail is actually surprising for a game of this type. Nintendo did a great job giving every environment a unique look and focusing on clean designs.

In terms of sound design, the music is good and sometimes like in the Sand Kingdom, the music is surprisingly atmospheric. I really did like the sound design but I certainly wouldn't say it is one of the best of all time. Its good but it isn't in the same league as Ocarina of Time, Shadow of the Colossus, FFX, The Last of Us etc. Its good, very enjoyable I would say an 8 in sound design.

This is a great game and I can see why a lot of people think it is worthy of a 9+ but for me I want more than just random fun.

It's a good game, don't get me wrong, but I feel like it was very "zeldafied". I prefer Marios where the course itself is the challenge, like Super Mario 3D Land, rather than picking up compelling items to progress. But that's just my opinion. What is not just an opinion is about the camera: sometimes it is terrible.

Another thing I don't like however is how many power moons feels shoehorned into this game. In Mario 64, there was always a puzzle or platforming challenge needed to obtain the star and 100% it. In this one, most of them feel like filler to stretch the game out longer than it actually is.

Other than the cons, this game does put a smile on anyone's face especially when you reach New Donk City which is my favorite part of the game. There are still lots of things to have fun in this one. If you own a switch and haven't played it then get on it!

I, instead, had low expectations because ever since 2010, I've felt the franchise had experienced a serious downfall, and my hype was on Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade 2. Instead of seeing a masterpiece in the trailers, I just saw a 5 or 6/10 game, but decided to give it the benefit of doubt, and not jump to immediate conclusions. Eventually, I got my hands on the Switch, and Super Mario Odyssey as well, and decided to give it a chance. And as you can see by this 8/10, I believe it's pretty clear that the game largely exceeded my initial expectations, but it still left something to be desired.

Firstly, the game marks the first time Mario's cap serves any purpose besides being part of Mario's design. In this game, the cap is an entity named Cappy, who assists Mario on his journey to save Princess Peach, because Tiara (Cappy's sister) was taken by Bowser as well. Cappy can do multiple things in this game, such as allowing Mario to control other beings or acting as some sort of platform for Mario to extend his jumps. The game features several areas (kingdoms) to explore. In them you can collect Power Moons, which are required to advance in the main story. There's so many Power Moons in the game that it can take a long time to gather them all, depending on how much time you dedicate to the game. I also love the visuals in this game (best-looking Mario title I've played), as well as those segments where you become 2D Mario in segments that resemble the original Super Mario Bros. back in 1985. And it's also cool how you can customize your ship and get special outfits for Mario.

However, I have several complaints. The story is pretty much the same as always. The difficulty is low for most of the time, except in some Bonus rooms or in Boss Rematches. It's cool how Mario can wear several types of costumes, but I wish they served any other purpose aside from allowing you to get access to some rooms, like having some sort of special ability, a strength and a weakness. The bosses are awesome-looking, but nearly all of them are underwhelming in dificulty, even Bowser himself. The music is very forgettable, except for maybe 2 or 3 tracks. The motion controls in the game feel so forced. Cappy may give a lot of gameplay options, but character-wise, he's the worst companion Mario has ever had. And Nintendo seems to have attempted to create a group of villains to replace the Koopalings, but they failed terribly: the Broodals. All of them are highly dislikeable, have extremely easy boss fights and are so generic and boring.

Super Mario Odyssey is a good game to a certain extent. Sure, it exceeded my 5/10 expectations, but it still isn't the first game I'd recomend parents to give their son/daughter for Christmas with a Nintendo Switch. However, the game is fun, and you will probably enjoy it all the way.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how good are the puzzles and the challenges, if the story isn't good the game is forgettable and just a pastime and for that, Mario Odyssey works perfectly.

Mario Odyssey tries really hard to go back to its roots and capture the free for all sandbox design of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine while using floatier physics like Super Mario Galaxy. On the topic of movement, it's wonderful in this game. Using your new hat partner Cappy to jump is satisfying. The new ball roll is extremely quick and fun. The return of the dive last seen in Sunshine, while not as versatile, is a nice addition. Overall movement feels like the best it's ever been because it combines elements of every 3d Mario game. I think that last sentence there best describes how I feel about Odyssey. It is one big mashup of every major 3d game but doesn't really do anything new. I'll try to highlight this in the next topic: the kingdoms of Odyssey.

The kingdoms are fine. The level design overall pretty low in quality compared to the other Mario games. Take Pinna Park from Sunshine. It's a complete joy to jump and run around the park because of the rides there complete Sunshines wonderful movement. In Odyssey, the kingdoms feel very typical. Non are really groundbreaking and amazing, the only exception being The Metro Kingdom. The Runied Kingdom and the Cloud Kingdom are disappointing. They're only existence is for boss battles and they contain 7 moons total(most of which are easy to get). I don't understand why Nintendo couldn't have made these kingdoms fleshed out, they honestly feel incomplete. That's not to say the level design of the kingdoms is bad, they're just decent.

The moons in the game are very similar to shrines in Breath of the Wild. Few of them are challenging to get and feel like a reward, while the majority of them are just kinda sitting there or have a glowing clue to there presence. The number of moons is staggering there are 836 of them. However, this brings up the debate between quantity vs. quality. Odyssey is a very easy game so getting most of these moons is extremely easy. The quality in receiving 120 shine sprites in say Sunshine is higher because it offers more of a challenge getting those shine sprites. Bigger isn't always better. This also goes for the sandbox nature of the games. It tries too hard to be a playground of fun like 64. This game is not truly non-linear neither is any 3d Mario game, so if you're looking for that experience you won't find it here. Mario works best in a linear fashion, that's why the galaxy games are great. Odyssey has barren worlds minus New Donk City, which is a lot of fun. While the music is excellent in levels in Lake and Seaside Kingdom swimming controls are significantly worse than any other 3d Mario(at least the cheep cheep capture ability solves this) The post game opens up a lot of these easy to collect moons. It makes the game fillied with mediocre content. One of the post game kingdoms hoever is a lovley callout to a previous Mario game but I don't want to spoil it.

This ties into the capture ability of Mario Odyssey. Sure it is a lot of fun becoming a frog, fireball in Luncheon, and the gust blowing enemy in Shiveria, but is it a groundbreaking fundamental? Compared to the spin from Galaxy and Fludd from Sunshine no it's not. This ties back to level design. The level design of Odysseys predecessors complimented the gimmicks each new game introduced. Most of the time the capture abilities are only used to get to a new platform or for a grand set piece. Compared to the tricks you can do with Fludd and the spin manipulating panels in Galaxy there is no moment in Odyssey where I say wow this use of the capture ability is genius and revolutionary. By no means is the capture ability bad in fact it has a lot of potentials to become better and it's a lot of fun. It would be even better if the levels were designed around using it in smarter ways.

The graphics in Odyssey are wonderful. The style is a true joy to the eyes. The story is competent for a Mario game, it's much better than Galaxy 2's and Sunshine's. The music is excellent with the best being Seaside Kingdom's bossa nova feel. And the bosses are decent but the final boss is one of the better Mario final bosses in recent memory.

The mini 2d sections are so minute that they don't matter that much. They're cool neat additions. The attention to detail when a bullet bill goes from 3d to 2d is astonishing, however, compared to 2d Mario games, Mario kinda controls like crap.
I won't spoil but the bonus for 100% completion is very very disapointing.

Overall Super Mario Odyssey is a very fun and decent game. However, it lacks some of the awe and polish other 3d Mario's set before it. I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants to have a good fun 3d platformer and who has enjoyed Mario's previous 3d outings.

nintendo uses this really jewish and lazy technique called if its not broken don't fix it what i mean by that is nintendo recycling almost everything from previous games like bosses needing 3 hits to die and they did took features from mario 64 and mario galaxy although they did add some new stuff like new and refreshing bosses and awesome good looking maps but even after all the new stuff it felt like i was playing another typical mario game that except for the hat ghost didn't put anything new there were cool moments in this game like the wanna be new york kindom and a dragon boss and the ending boss (bowser) but except for that they always throw at you these team rocket wanna be bunnies that work for bowser and you fight them almost the whole game again there are bosses that aren't them but most of the bosses are these 4 bunnies and i really don't understand why there are no power ups like i understand that you can just possess a monster and get its powers but still even one power up could make the game better after you finish the game there is endgame and the game asks you to collect a lot of moons and i really mean a looot of them but the reward you get for it is awful you just re battle boswer and at the end you get a thank you and some fireworks which is really stupid so don't bother to 100% the game because there is no satisfying reward awaiting for you another thing i don't understand is the co op in this game because one of your friends plays the hat ghost and the other mario basically meaning that the one that plays mario is doing all the work while the other that plays the hat ghost does nothing and sometimes just watches

Brilliant game. There are lots of interesting places to explore and an excellent, fun storyline. But I don’t like the Mario games that use forced gimmicks like this. And it is a bit too short but overall good

There's a few objective problems with the game that nobody can disagree with, like the lack of a viable control scheme that doesn't include motion controls despite all of the duplicate button functionality. Makes the harder content unplayable or overly frustrating with the pro controller or playing in handheld mode. Even with the joycons, the motion isn't reliable for some actions, and the analog sticks are so sensitive at high speeds, some of the moons are more difficult than using a pro controller where the sticks are more subtle. This is big enough to take any game out of 10/10 contention. I feel like if a reviewer only plays on a television using the joycons separated from each other, they will never understand the pains with the other setups, and that's a very big problem for a console that is supposed to be as flexible as the switch and this is their flagship title.

I also think there are valid criticisms about the lack of variety and mechanics, as well as how padded out the game feels, although each person will have a different opinion of that. Once the novelty wears off, I can't help but think that Galaxy is just a better game.

I think this is more like 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

It was very short and easy, the motion controls were a bit wonky. There was plenty of missed potential, rewards for completion are pretty weak and bosses were repeated plenty of time, however this game completely makes up for it with all the amazing mechanics, the amazing control and just the whole experience together. It was really great.

Like me, you're scrolling through this and are seeing 10, 10, 10, ..., 10. it goes on.
This is why I created an account; to give newcomers an UNBIASED review of this game.

Yes, I play many, many games not limited to just one console and I love Nintendo and Mario games.

    First, who are you?
    Yes, you!
Don't just look at the scalled up reviews of fanboys and fangirls, see the 10/10 score and thing, "I'm going to love this game! I have to buy it!"

Stop, just stop. WHO are you?

    Do you seek any challenge?
After playing open world games do you have an unrealistic expectation that this game will be immersive?
Are you looking for story, for reason, for thinking outside the box?

If you are a person which greatly appreciate the above, only rose tinted glasses will keep ou from being disaapointed in this game. Because, if you are that person, you should be dissapointed.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is an underwhelmingly easy game devoid of any real push to continue playing and drive you forward. There is, of course, no story and the environments could not be less immersive; obstacles appear to be cut-n-pasted there, 'just cause'. The worlds are VERY small and disjointed.

So is Mario Odyssey bad? Absolutely not!
BUT, it depends on WHO you are.

Are you seeking a game with a playful setting and gorgeous art-style? Are you looking for a game which you can pick up and play after a long days work? are you looking for a game accessible to anyone and enjoyable to anyone? Are you seeking a game to pander to your rediculous side and creativity (only in art-style)?

If so, this is the game for you. You will love it.

    A few pointers overall:
Mario is a beautiful, fun and creative game which everyone can enjoy. If you play any sort of game even semi regularly though, you'll fell like a god playing it. The puzzles are completely underwhelming and predictable, and the only time you'll die will be from a misplaced jump.

This game is very surprisingly small. The worlds you go to are very inconsistent. Most are very small and do not excite you; they are a chore and bring down the quality of the game. Other worlds, however, are amazing and are definitely the right size. Unfortunately, these worlds are few and far between. Don't expect to play the game longer than 25 hours before you feel you should put it down and play something else. Multiplayer is quite a gimmick.

Regardless of who you are, this game will never reach 10/10 if you are being unbaised.
It's important to think critically and fairly.

Should you buy it??? That's why you're here isn't it???

It depends on who you are!

It is a fun game. I can say that. I enjoyed it.

I would have liked the whole game's use of the capture mechanic to be like in cap land, where there were Winged Goombas that you could capture for fun. I didn't really like to capture many enemies though, I felt they were clunky and very situational. Some of the best ones like the tank, winged gooma, Tropical Wigglerr Flying Dino Dude and Dinosaur are fun because they shake up the game play so much. I was hoping the levels would be bigger, like maybe all Sand Kingdom size, but I know that it's quality over quantity. Some of the moons felt like Korok seeds, just because they were so easy to find.
I've been negative, so now what I liked. I loved the fact that Cappy can be used as a platform to jump off of. It made me feel like a bad ass when I could scale a wall from my platforming ability. The moons that have some form of a level I really enjoyed. Being able to jump from a high place and being able to get to a platform made me feel cool. Moving around felt fun, platforming was fun and the levels were never badly designed, maybe just bland at some points. The motion controls were really, really well implemented in my experience. The cap attacks like homing cap were easy to perform consistently. I have not finished the game, so I might redo this review if my opinion changes.

The lack of challenges is a little off-putting, so I can't say it's as memorable as Breath of the Wild. Still very good. 8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In Super Mario Odyssey, there are lots of places to explore. This game focuses a lot on the capture abilities, and many areas are based around them. I really liked this mechanic, and each and every capture is different, except for a few exceptions. I also liked the kingdoms in this game. While some are pretty small, they all feel big in their own way. Each kingdom holds various moons, which are similar to the stars and shines of previous titles, but also the korok seeds of loz botw. I was shocked finding out there is 883 collectible moons in the game, and even more shocked when you can buy the rest for a total of 999 MOONS. Each collectible moon feels rewarding, but I don't really like how you can buy them. I can take one point off for that, since instead of doing the hard work of finding all collectible moons you can just buy them. Each of the platforming sections feel difficult to the skill level they are targeting, and some sub levels in the kingdom do have difficult challenges for a rookie platformer like me. Most enemies were not difficulties, but that makes sense, since in this game enemies are to control, not kill. Though I didn't like how easy some bosses were, another point off for that. The only boss that seemed hard for me was the dragon boss.
In summary, Super Mario Odyssey is a great game that celebrates this great franchise, but it does have its share of flaws. I enjoyed this game to my hearts content, and loved exploring the diverse areas of the beautiful game. I hope that when you play this game, you feel the same.

I've only got one major complaint: the controls. Sure, for basic gameplay they're acceptable. But playing tabletop mode makes Mario's movements limited as you're unable to preform so many of the hat spins and throws. Even more so when playing in docked mode with two separate joycons the actions never seem to work. I've never once been able to flick my hat up or down--and spinning it in a circle is always a hit or miss. This is obviously frustrating, as I'd like Mario to move, jump, and act with as much fluidity as possible.

That being said, still an amazing game overall, and definitely worth the purchase price.

It brings delightful mechanics and new interesting exploration that hasn't been seen in the series since Super Mario 64. The textures, framerate, and cartooney-graphics on the switch are a match made in heaven. This game is definitely worthy of being ranked amongst some of the best video games of all time. While I'd love to give this game a perfect 10/10 there is one major gripe holding it back; the controls. The controls are, well, not great. For the best experience the game should be played with the joy-cons separated due to the motion control aspect of throwing "Cappy." I have issues with the joy-cons for separate reasons that I won't list in this review. But in summary, the controllers don't sync well from a distance (i.e. which is not so good for home theatre setups), the thumb-sticks are in an awkward position, and the motion controls aren't always super accurate. I can't tell you how many times I went for a circular throw of Cappy only to have Mario throw him straight forward. I originally thought that the motion controls were a gimmick until I saw them being integral in games like the new Zelda. Games like Super Mario Odyssey make me concerned for the future of gaming on the console. There is a reason I went out and bought the $70 pro-controller. I didn't want to have to deal with the gimmicks or the cramping. The controls really disrupt the experience of the game and makes it much more "choppy" than its handheld controller predecessors. What's worse is that the other two methods of playing aren't much better either. If you want to play in handheld-mode get ready to shake that switch worse than a 90-year-old with Parkinsons. Want to play with a controller? Have fun trying to get accurate motion controls. That's what justifies the two point deduction. All-in-all this game is a must buy if you own a switch. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not buying this game. Expand

If you aren't into searching every last corner of an area, this game isn't for you, or at least you wont get the full enjoyment. Some of the moons are just ridiculous, like the one that requires you to kick a specific rock 50 times, with no indication it has a moon. This is what really brings the game down. If these ridiculous moons were removed this game would easily get a 9 or 9.5. The core game isn't deserving of a 10, as many people will say it is. The hype has created an unrealistic vision of the game and so many people are blinded to their favoritism and bias towards the game.

The game is fun, but a lot of the best parts are hidden and hard to access. Instead of providing a fun challenge to get the moons, a lot of them are just scrounging every little corner of a map to see if, for example, one was obtained by sitting on the right bench. The few that have genuinely engaging challenges are hidden even more and unless you want to 100% the game you wont get to experience most of them. If you aren't going to, you will still like the game, but you wont get much out of it,, but if you are intending of doing every little thing in the game, you will love it.

I will not harp on the similarities to Sonic Adventure 1, such as the Mystic Ruins, Station Square, emblems hidden throughout the overworld in hard to reach places, because I consider that to be a good thing and a completion of what the Sonic Adventure overworld could be in modern times. Taking inspiration from an amazing game is never a bad thing, and I consider this returning the favor from Sonic Lost World. My main issue is that there are no consequences and no serious driving force to keep me playing. Death results in loosing 10 coins, which is meaningless given that coins respawn when you die. I understand and respect that this was done in order to reduce stress so players that value hunting for everything and trying to go for 100% completion can do so without worrying about restarting the level. However, that fear and the sense of accomplishment once you do something dangerous and survive is why I like that style of extra content in the first place. The reason the green stars in Mario Galaxy 2 worked so well for me is because often times if you missed, you could die. They were hard enough to find so I may have had to do a level a few times to find them. To me, that was a rewarding experience. I don’t get the same feeling from finding the power moons until post-game, and even then, there is little pressure. The final areas are insanely difficult, and I respect that challenge a lot, but again, lack of lives made me always understand in the back of my mind that I could die as many times as I needed without consequence, and the pity box is still in effect from previous Mario games, although I’ll admit I’m not sure what it does this time because I never used it. The game does an amazing job of what it is trying to accomplish, and I do enjoy the game a lot when I remember to play it.
The reason that games like Mario NES, Mario 3, World, 64 and sunshine are games that I can just sit down and replay for a while is that I do not win every time. If I try to play Mario 1-3 on their own without glitch abusing for 99 lives, I occasionally fail, and that brings me back to redeem myself after failure. Sunshine is similar in that right because after however long it has been, I still have not completed the game to 100% because I die, and there are consequences when that happens. After I 100% Odyssey, which I will, because it is a great game worthy of the time to complete it, I will probably not pick it up again for quite a few years, if ever. The feeling of tension and motivation is something that Classical Sonic did perfectly, the first few zones are easy and shouldn’t give you a problem, as to be friendly to new players. Then Labyrinth zone comes in and reminds you that your 15 lives can go away in an in instant. Many people find that especially considering you must start over from the beginning if you die enough, but for me, that’s the motivating factor behind playing the game over and over until I win. Zones like the Starlight Zone exist to give the player the calm moments to focus on collectables and get the Chaos Emeralds. Starlight zone is hard to die in and it’s such a memorable moment to me because it’s a welcome break from the panic attack that is Labyrinth zone, and the final area, where practically everything on the screen can kill you. Mario Odyssey has areas that are designed to be low stress down perfectly, and the sense of adventure is well done, but it is missing a proper Scrap Brain Zone, an area where you will die unless you do perfectly, and anything short of perfection means game over, and getting taunted. While that high pressure is often frustrating, Odyssey will never produce the feeling of winning on your last life, the determination forms the moment where it is do or die. I think a better way to accomplish what odyssey was trying, is to either have easy mode operate with the 10-coin system and hard mode have lives, or lives switch to the 10 coin system after the story concludes.

When i first played, i immediately got addicted to this game. I got so addicted that i finished the whole story in one day. And i realized how short this games main story is. And i think that's one problem with the game. It would had been nice to pic the amount of moons needed to get to the next kingdom. Sort of like a difficult level. But that is really a minor complain. My two absolute favorite moment in the game is after the final boss and the NDC festival. Those sorts of moments just makes you smile a lot. Expand

This game features a welcomed and appreciated return to form, with the platforming akin to the days of 64 and sunshine. but it still struggles to escape the shadow of Super Mario Galaxy, a game which it has failed to top in my eyes. Some of the tedious missions, but mostly a real lack of interest to collect them all, keep me from liking this game as much as Galaxy or 64

Super Mario Odyssey attempts to bring new ideas to the table without going overboard and right away it just straight out worked. Sure the changes to certain Mario gameplay may be a huge hit-in-the-spot, but you can easily ignore all of this game's problems due to the way this game's presentation is being shown right when the game is being played. There is enough challenges in this game to feel a sense of fulfilment once you complete a level, collect that damn seemingly elusive moon or beat a boss. However, there is also a real urge to do one better by collecting more items or coins to unlock outfits for your favourite protagonist. Who knew that Mario would become the fashion icon he is in 2017/2018? And who knew parading him in these outfits would bring simple joy?
I played this game and I smiled a lot throughout and it had me thinking, I cannot remember the last time I played a single player game (please do not count having a friend play as cappy as multiplayer, it isn't, it's torture) where I actually laughed out loud as much or even just smiled.
Well done Nintendo, all that is missing is a better multiplayer mode and larger levels. It's a game that ended too soon on the first play through.

Now for my problems. This game has a lot of nit-picks watering it down. My biggest problem is the difficulty. Easy games for me just seem boring and no want to replay the main game over again. Also, why forced motion controls? i like playing my switch portable mode but forcing motion controls sometimes make me dock it or play another game entirely! Luckily, you can totally get past the entire game without using motion controls, but i'm somewhat of a completionist and some moons require them. The transformations are personally fine, but they aren't a game changer they just feel like power-ups in disguise. I would give this game a 7.5/10, i can't do that so i just rounded. But despite these flaws, this game is still a must have for Mario fans, but not necessarily switch owners.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Odyssey harks back to the days of Super Mario 64, one of the best 3D Mario games to date. Following it up with another great title, Odyssey sends the player on a journey across multiple kingdoms around the Mario universe to rescue Princess Peach and collect 999 Power Moons. (Moons replacing Stars)

    -------------
    Difficulty:

Super Mario Odyssey handles difficulty very well. For the most part, the areas you will see if getting minimal Power Moons to move on in the storyline are at a welcoming, warm difficulty. Most players could do them easily. The post-game gets a bit more tricky, with more elaborate and difficult challenges, puzzles, and secrets to find. The Darker Side being the hardest, a long level with no checkpoints that will test your skills.

Though the game is not without its simply frustrating elements. These two very specifically being the jump rope and volleyball minigames. The volleyball one is the most frustrating because it takes forever to get going, and once it does, it's incredibly fast-paced.

    ----------

    Graphics:

The graphics for Odyssey are simply amazing and well done. From living, vivid civilizations to stunning landscapes(both in playable areas and in the distance), this game truly has a great aesthetic. The character models are well made, thought and care put in to make them match their different kingdoms. This game and Breath of The Wild both set high standards for Switch games to come.

    ---------
    Mechanics:

Odyssey's new platforming mechanics allow for all sorts of new methods of scaling landscapes. Cappy is the biggest change, of course. Throwing Cappy, you can dive into him to go further and gain height, then repeat a second time in the air. This makes some tricky jumps much more plausible and adds a new layer of fun.

The Capture mechanic ties into Cappy. When you throw him at a specific enemy, you basically possess it and are able to use its abilities. For example, in icy levels there tend to be Goombas. Capture one, you will not slip on the ice, making navigation much easier. Captures are immensely fun and helpful in your quest to obtain all 999 Power Moons placed throughout the large, sprawling kingdoms.

    ---------
    Narrative:

Mario Odyssey has a good narrative backing it. The classic tale of Peach being kidnapped by Bowser, you save her at the end, she dumps Mario and Bowser at once - wait, huh? I personally loved that plot twist, adding some humour to the end of the game.

Before you can Capture Bowser to save the world and Peach, you must first get through Bowser's new cronies, the Broodals. These painfully easy to defeat bosses will be seen and fought multiple times throughout the journey. After completing the main story, you unlock the Dark Side of the moon, which is the home of the Broodals, evidenced by the hoard of bunnies all over the small area. you learn the Broodals are the wedding planners basically from the outset of the game when it is literally mentioned. They travel the various kingdoms with Bowser, stealing specific items for the wedding.

    -----------
    Game World:

This game has such beautiful areas! Each one is crafted with an exquisite attention to detail, Nintendo really outdoing themselves here. From the gorgeous sunsets of the Seaside Kingdom to the barren desert landscape of the Sand Kingdom, there are plenty of great things about the level and hub design. The most photo-worthy is by far the Seaside Kingdom, a pristine sunset on a beautiful waterbed with jets spurting water into a giant glass, the water sparkling in the sky. (Post-boss.)

    ----------
    Main Negatives:

First of all, the human models do really need work, the faces are quite blurry and feel outdated. Then there are the simply frustrating challenges I mentioned earlier, which don't offer much in the way of fun. Instead, they turn into a repetitive, boring minigame eating away at your time and energy.

    -----------
    Conclusion:

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best games available on the Switch right now. From its likeable characters to its gorgeous graphics(minus the human characters) to its impeccable level design utilizing its fresh mechanics, Odyssey is a must for Switch owners. If you're into platforming, that is. A LOT of it.

Galaxy games implemented motion controls well where it mixed traditional Mario gameplay with limited motion controls, but this game makes one of the main offensive moves a motion control option in a game that mostly doesn't use motion controls? Why? Either do it right or just leave it out altogether. Maybe I am nitpicking, it is a good game, just nowhere near the best of the series. Expand

Not great, not terrible. It was an interesting experience, but nothing revolutionary (except Mario finally got a nice game).

I personally believe this game does not beat Super Mario 64 BUT it does beat Super Mario Sunshine it is a true master class in the platform genre and it is all on the go. So much content to play with fun and creative worlds to run around in. If you have/want a SWITCH this and Breath of the Wild is a perfect combo to go with.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a pretty good game, but I feel that the different worlds were short and kind of blended together into the same thing with different objectives. I did like when Bowser interrupted the flight mid-game and we had a brawl in the clouds, and I also enjoyed the fight with the dragon, but those moments were short-lived and I felt that the worlds were reused material with different characters. Overall, it was a fun game, but wasn't developed enough. I did like the capture ability, though. I also thought you should've needed more moons to move on to another world. Expand

Expand

Quite possibly the best game on the Switch.
The controls are insanely polished, the level design is expansive and unique, the majority of the Moons are fun to try to collect, and they finally remembered how to make a storyline in a 3D platformer Mario game work.
Also you can make Mario wear a sombrero.

Amazing Mario game but the bosses are too easy. Platforming is amazing but sometimes has some design flaws but those are just exceptions. There are too many moons which are just too simple and lack ideas would be better with less moons that gives you more challenge and have cool concepts.

El juego es bueno, aunque se hace bastante fácil, la duración es corta para lo que se espera. Muy bonitos gráficos.

This game is really fun and one of the most fun mario games but it's just too short and at the time when I got it (2017) it was 60 dollars and definitely not worth it. Some times the moons are just boring to find and the charm and magic of finding one wears of after you beat the main story. Other than that it's really fun and you should play it, there are just better games out like BOTW.

This game is plenty fun and obviously lots of thought were put into the challenges. However, I think the camera work is a bit wonky and lets the game down a bit. Not the best 3D Mario, but far from a bad one. So much to do in this game, you could blow through it or spend hours trying to get the hundreds of moons in this one.

Incredible visuals and the ability to take over enemies makes Odyssey one of the best Mario games of all time!

Really great game, but man is it repetitive. How many times have you played this story... in this exact format? Basically I’m trying to say: don’t get this game because of the story or because of the levels or mechanics. Get this game because it’s one of the most quality time wasters you can buy right now, meaning it’s straight up fun for a while... but that’s it.

Super Mario Odyssey is a success of the Switch. It offers the luxury of being the most open world Mario 3D (without being too much). While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
