The double jump is not great its hit an miss, the cloak and shift is not optimal since the enemies can tell where you are or going to be some how. I was expecting good things from Metroid Dread. I didn't really know what to expect from this game though, since Nintendo haven't exactly treated Metroid with respect and integrity in recent years. (Looking at you Federation Force...)
However, I am delighted to say that this game absolutely exceeds ALL expectations. I've not beaten the game yet, but I'm willing to say this may be the single most perfect Metroid game Nintendo has ever given us. This game, unlike so many others in the last few years, gets a 10/10 from me, and this is high praise, as I am a very harsh critic.

The reason I'm able to give M:D such a high score is because it doesn't hold back in the slightest. If it's going to punch you, it's going to give you everything it has. Bosses are beautifully crafted and not one single boss has been too easy or lame. Every single one has challenged me, killed me, and forced me to think outside the box to beat them. Each death adds to your skill in ways most other games don't even touch on, even Samus Returns.

This game is built on the Samus Returns gameplay style. While I really enjoyed SR, M:D takes this engine to a new level. There are numerous quality of life improvements and tons of well thought out mechanics, much more so than SR. If Samus Returns were a food, it would be a hamburger, filling and delicious. If Metroid Dread were a meal, it would be a 3 course at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant. I mean this in every way. A hamburger you eat and you're done. M:D just keep coming and coming and coming and its amazing and terrifiying and beautifully crafted.

The sound design is so incredibly amazing. Rarely do I find myself in quiet rooms outside the safe area. The ambiance is superb. The soundtrack makes your heart race. When you're in danger, YOU ARE IN DANGER, and the audio beats right along with your poor overencumbered heart. The music and sound design makes this game feel like, "It's GOING," or, "It's HAPPENING!" Moments where you catch your breath are sweet sighs of relief, readying yourself to enter that doorway and get back in the fight or flight again. The only criticism I have on sound is that they reused the heat and lava warning sound from SR. That blaring alarm sounds so low quality next to all the other sounds. They also reused the parry sound, but that fits right in.

Art. Art is good. This game's got hella art. See the art. Very pretty, much gaze. The graphics, while not the best, still looks incredible. The stylization Nintendo is known for for making lower resolutions look outstanding is here. There are aliasing lines, but I can ignore those.

Enemies are much more varied than in SR. Each one has its own timing for parry, and some don't even have parry as an option. There seem to be enemy types that all areas abide by, but instead of how they did it in SR where new enemies were just recolors, every area has their own enemy models. Going to a new area and seeing new gnarly toothed floating things of rage is really cool and every zone has enemies that fit it's environment.

So far the story is phenomenal, and I rarely give stories high praise. I won't say much here because these are spoilers you won't want spoiled. Needless to say, Metroid type s*** is HAPPENING! This game has a lot of cannon. Metroid Fusion is important, being the last mainline 2D Metroid game in the series. Exploring the game later on after a certain event takes place (you'll know what I mean when you get there) is unbelievably cool and nostalgic. Beating my first... uh... certain.... boss... filled me with IMMENSE pride, like I showed it whos boss again and told it to sit tf back down. This story is very well crafted and I hate that I shant say anything more about it. 10/10. This game also has voice acting! And it's good!
Controls are tight. If you get hit, you are unable to move for a split second. The puzzles in this game are all well thought out and thought provoking. There were a couple spots where I thought I was softlocked but I was just being a big ol stupidhead. Being a veteran of Metroid games, I feel I have been able to find my way through the maze of the map fairly easily, but then again, I think the map design and room placement is also just really good.

If you like Metroid, have played a 2D Metroid in the past, and have played Samus Returns or Metroid Fusion, this game is for you.

Just a disclaimer for the weak of heart. This game is named Metroid Dread for a reason. This game will fill you with dread as you watch helplessly as you die. There are zones where you are powerless against the specific type of foe. I joked with one of my friends that this game could have also been called Metroid: Scary or Me
    Edit:
I have beaten the game and hard mode. If I had one critique it's how your aim locks in the horizontal position even when holding down aim. Makes killing a certain ceiling emmi a bit difficult but not because it's actually hard.
This game is top ten, easy. Well done, developers.

But I am a complete wimp at horror games and yet I didn't find them scary shortly after encountering them. There are also hardly any punishment for being caught. If you like stealth sections where you can aggro an invincible and hard to detect enemy from off screen, this is the game for you. If you were glad that the SAX scenes in Fusion were brief and infrequent, like me, this is not your game. I just want a well designed two dimensional metroidvania with a satisfying power creep and crisp controls. I do not want to try to figure out where to go in between death loading screens. Nothing particularly groundbreaking but it's very competent at what it proposes. Also, prepare for a challenge! Which is unusual for a Nintendo game. The bosses will give you quite a trouble, so I suggest to keep looking for itens and especially energy tanks, but don't worry, it's not unfair to the point of screwing the experience.

Maybe the only real novelty here are those robots called E.M.M.I. They inhabit certainly areas of the maps and will pursue you until you're out of their range. If they catch you is game over (there's a way to escape, but it's quite hard to master it). They won't stop until you find a particular weapon in each of those areas to kill them. At first I find those encounters I bit frustrating because of the instant death, but I came to enjoy it and I think it was a interesting addition.

Among the few things that hurt the experience for me are the controls. I find some commands overly complicated and can get confusing to master it during some stressful moments, especially bosses battles and those speed booster puzzles (I hate them). Also the soundtrack is a bit disappointing, only the few Super Metroid remixes are worth a listen.

I can't imagine how stressful it must've been for MercurySteam to develop the next installment in the highly acclaimed mainline Metroid series and revive the fabled cancelled Project Dread that fans have been fantasizing about for almost two decades. It's very clear to me that they over delivered. They created something that surpassed Yoshio Sakamoto's original vision (according to himself), exceeds the wildest dreams of every fan and puts the rest of the game industry to shame. This is without a doubt one of the most polished games ever made. It even surpasses all previous mainline Metroid games which were already perfect masterpieces. The graphics are gorgeous and it's unbelievable that this is running on a Nintendo Switch. The game reinvents the genre that Metroid originally created and elevates it to an unbelievably high standard. I was also pleasantly surprised that this game is moving forward and doesn't overuse nostalgia like Disney's new Star Wars movies. By keeping nostalgic moments rare, they actually have a very big impact when they happen in the story. Especially when the Theme of Samus Aran kicks in.
I recommend everybody to play Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Samus Returns, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread in this order. You're in for a ride! I also want to ask Nintendo to make the previous games available on the Nintendo Switch for new fans who don't own a Wii U or 3DS.

First of all, asking "is this game good or bad?" is a difficult question to answer. While it is a Metroid game at heart, it feels as though it's trying to add new twists onto the formula and it falls flat at its attempt to do so. The E.M.M.I. are a nuisance and add no difficulty to the game, rather a bothersome hurdle (both figuratively and literally) that continues to irritate me to no end when their spawn just happens to be right at the entrance where I'm coming through or directly in the way of where I need to go, leading to a long, drawn out chase sequence or just sitting and waiting until it decides to go elsewhere, completely pulling me out of the experience in the process. They don't add suspense, they don't add a challenge, and they certainly don't add anything of interest to the gameplay or the story. They're only there to be annoying and to force you into a boss battle you have to repeat time and time again. Yes, you do have to do the same boss battle 4 times at least in order to actually kill the E.M.M.I. and it does not change in any way at any point. Is it challenging? No. interesting? Absolutely not. All it is is the game's way of railroading you to go where it requires you to go at every twist and turn. Speaking of, you have almost little to no say in where you want to explore until half way through the game as the world is designed to force you down one specific path each time you hit a "checkpoint" in the story. Past installments would incentivize exploration for bonus missile ammo, energy tanks, or even possible skips in the progression. This game has none of that, which is odd, as it is of the Metroidvania genre, obviously. The whole point of these types of games is to explore and build up your arsenal past what is required at any given point through open world exploration with a chunk of sections being locked behind powers you unlock later on. When a Metroid game has one linear path at all given times and continuously tells you what you HAVE to do at that moment, going as far as even placing walls or barriers that weren't even in the room prior (yes, this is a thing that happens at several instances in the game), you have a problem. As for the combat, it feels satisfying at the start or right after you get a new upgrade as you're just tearing through everything in your way, but it eventually gets to a point where enemies are just bullet sponges that require you to parry their attacks to kill them, and this includes the major bosses as well. It almost feels like Cuphead with how same-y combat is and how long it takes to kill one enemy until they let you parry their attack for an insta-kill. There's just far too many flaws that were never present until they rushed out this title to hold fans over for the eventual release of Prime 4. Overall, this game seeks to create a fresh experience that can also bring new fans into the series, but ironically steers further away from what made Metroid so much fun. Expand

What's not so fun is the trial and error nature of the EMMI encounters and some boss fights. I really like the idea of the EMMI bots and at first I was totally on board. They're kind of like Mr. X or Nemesis if you've ever played Resident Evil. Enter an area with an EMMI and, if they catch you, it's game over. Dread gives you two chances to escape when they grab you, but the timing isn't something that you can do on reaction (at least I can't and I'm a big fan of twitchy games with parry mechanics). It comes down to making a hard read as to when to press the button. Fail and it's game over. Enjoy your obligatory 10 second load screen and gameplay tips! This can make for some really tense moments that I enjoyed, but 5-6 deaths to the same EMMI kind of ruins the effect in my opinion.

You can kill EMMIs with a certain one time use power up acquired from these odd, blue, metal brain fellas. This is very cool the first couple times you do it. By the 6th, I was rolling my eyes. It was fortunately rewarding to dispatch them because they all give Samus new tools to progress through the game.

EMMIs and bosses would have been much more fun if the controls were snappier. Dread has one of the worst double jumps in any game I've ever played. I lost so many energy tanks because my jump just wouldn't come out. I died to many an EMMI because Samus would decide not to grab a ledge. These fights require some serious precision and Dread just doesn't deliver on that front. It's close, but not quite there.

Thankfully, Dread does deliver on other fronts. I quite enjoyed the story as someone who has played almost all of the mainline Metroid games. It does a good job of making you want to keep pushing through and sheds more light on the Chozo. Conversations with the ADAM AI were always interesting and oddly soothing. The world and atmosphere are very diverse and authentically Metroid. The presentation is quite impressive for a switch game.

This is not a $60 package though. Nintendo is really on one asking that kind of scratch for this game. My completion time according to the ending splash screen was 6 hours and 45 minutes. Considering how often the game repeats itself within such a short runtime, I'm thinking $25-30 would have made a lot more sense.

Absolutely floored. As an OG fan, this gives me hope for the future of this beloved franchise. The game was excellent. I loved the fluidity of the mechanics, the physics, the new abilities and the plot. Just fantastic. My GOTY.

Metroid Dread forgot about the more conventional narratives that were used in games like Metroid Prime 3 or Other M to do something similar like in Fusion, with some dialogues from Adam from time to time that serves both as lore building and exposition device. The most plot-twisty cutscenes are also pretty expositional by nature, and definitely would prefer a more interpretational approach but they’re not bad, they’re simply not great either. The story has some interesting twists, especially by the end but they also felt a little clumsy and forced to superficially add some stakes if you ask me, again, they’re not bad but aren’t great either.

Dread also approaches gameplay and exploration in classic Metroid fashion, making it one of the better if not the best aspects of the game. Combat is ultra-fluid and it's a reminiscence of Other M, with fast-paced movements like dashing and the newly introduced counter maneuver (I believe it was introduced in Return of Samus).

The combat shines the most while fighting bosses, all of them are mean and defying enemies that will kill you pretty fast if you’re not paying attention as they will take a full energy gauge in one hit, you have to rely on reflexes and common sense to beat them.

The boss fights only will increase their intensity with each boss you defeat, some of these bosses or mini-bosses are reskinned enemies but they all have some kind of new movement or appear with a partner to make things more interesting and never feel like you’re making a chore or repeating yourself.

There are stalker segments directly borrowed from Metroid Fusion, in these zones you are chased by indestructible machines called E.M.M.I. These segments add good tension while you traverse the map and since every one of these machines has a different ability and their zone layout it’s different between them (not to mention as you progress, they keep getting more complex) they keep things interesting and challenging.

Depending on your tastes it may or might not offer replayability, after you finish the game depending on your difficulty and completion time you’ll be rewarded with an allusive image to a past game and unlock hard difficulty. In my personal opinion, the awarded images aren’t enough even if they’re cool illustrated.

Haven’t played Samus Returns, I can’t say how much the series has evolved in the hands of MercurySteam so I’m not sure how much of this is an upgrade from that game, however, my time with Dread was mostly positive, as it borrows elements from other Metroid games like Fusion and updates them to newer times.

Having played every other game in the Metroid series, Metroid Dread was a must buy for me. Unfortunately having now completed the game, I was left somewhat disappointed for a number of key reasons.

    1. Difficulty

The game is noticeably harder than any other Metroid game I have played. I thought Prime 2 on hard mode was hard, but I honestly found Metroid Dread on normal mode harder. I think the reason for this difficulty is that fact that most bosses and enemies now seen to do considerably more damage per hit (usually over 100) which is not the case in previous titles. This is compensated for by the fact that bosses now have a checkpoint outside, but I still find it frustrating to die over and over again to beat one boss, even if this was the intention. Also, I really hate the melee countering, I'm not going to explain why, it just needs to go.

    2. Atmosphere

Metroid Dread does not have the same feeling of desolation that is characteristic of a Metroid game. The planet feels very mechanical and lacks many natural environments, and the natural areas in the game felt very generic and too similar visually to areas from Super Metroid or Zero Mission, most areas were also filled with enemies, which is fine in most cases, but I felt that certain areas could have done without to help build a stronger atmosphere, especially considering the game is called "Dread".

    3. Music

This is more a subjective point but I just do not like the music, it is rare for me to complete a game and not remember a single piece of music from it. Most of the music was lacking a consistent tune which makes it just sound like an incoherent jumble of sounds; the same is true for bosses as well unfortunately.

    4. Portrayal of Samus

I didn't feel that Samus was portrayed in a consistent way with previous games, she felt a lot colder and angrier in this game. In games like Metroid Fusion and to an extent Super Metroid with its intro, Samus occasionally gave short monologues stating her view on the current situation, this is something I think the story would have benefited from, as all we see of Samus in Dread is her killing things which, during some boss battles, make her actually appear somewhat sadistic.

All in all, while this review might seem rather negative, the game isn't all bad and did have some good moments, I also like the addition of new power ups to keep it fresh, however I just do not feel that the price justifies the game.

Dread felt imbalanced with so many boss fights that seemed much more challenging than the rest of the game. There was a point starting about halfway in where it seemed like it was one boss battle after another, which became very annoying and frustrating. Unlike past games, backtracking in Dread to find more power-ups yielded few to no rewards as doors are sealed and invulnerable creatures are deliberately placed to block key paths. Only until right before the final boss did I feel like I had the freedom to fully explore, but by then I was eager to just finish this. It was often weird to enter a new map, only to be forced to return to a previous map just a few corridors later. The EMMIs became more annoying than something to dread. I missed Samus's journal-like narration and the game almost never lets us know what Samus is thinking. The story left a lot to be desired as much isn't explained; I expected a lot more considering this was the final story to an ongoing saga. The music wasn't anything great; most was too up-tempo and weren't like the ethereal music of previous games. And maybe the most egregious problem is maybe a light spoiler, although Nintendo confirmed this before release (which apparently I missed then), is that there are no metroids in the game! I really missed seeing and fighting those mysterious energy suckers alike at the end of the NES and SNES games. Sadly, Dread hardly lives up to the original games. Expand

Metroid Dread is one of the best platformers, if not one of the best gaming experiences on the Switch period. The story is engaging and game length is appropriate. Can't comment on the ending, because the last boss is giving me a hard time right now...

So why is this not a 10/10? Because the exploration, while quite visually appealing, did not feel as open-ended and non-linear as some of the other elite games in the genre (I am aware that the original Metroid formula inspired every one of these games). Throughout Dread, while I did get lost a few times, I always felt like the path I was on still had a sense of linearity. For example, no optional bosses, and no items or upgrades that can be missed/skipped in completing the game (this may be inaccurate, as speedrunners have begun to find sequence breaks). The game even blocks off previous areas at times, forcing you into certain encounters or areas.

Overall, this is a great game. My gripes about exploration are greatly outweighed by the game's ability to provide a thoroughly satisfying and quality gaming experience. It left me wanting more, which may ultimately be a good thing, I just didn't have this nagging feeling after playing, say, Hollow Knight...just saying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first game in the series I played was super metroid, in the SNES. I've been a fan of this kind of exploration games. I never had Gameboy to play fusion, nor gamecube to play the prime series. When I bought my switch, I wanted to get the feeling again that when I played super metroid, that feeling of being lost, but when you already think you're stuck in the game, you find a wall that goes apart or a boss that gives you a new skill. So, when metroid dread was announced, I was very excited. I bought it right when he was out, and I couldn't stop playing. Every area, every enemy, every boss, every new skill just gave me motivation to keep playing. The first day, I got stuck in Kraid, but that didn't destituded me to stop playing. It still gave me more motivation to improve in the game. There are few games that give you that motivation, that feeling that you can improve, even if you can't get it at the first time . In short, very good game, INCREDIBLE movement and the 60€ are worth it Expand

    2. The level bosses and EMMIs are fantastically rendered and animated both in the 3D preview and during in game combat. The AI of the level bosses (and especially the EMMI's) is a significant upgrade over prior Metroid games.

    3. So far the map exploration is a mix between linear progression and open world. There are areas that you enter from one point but can't leave via the same path. The closed backward paths serve as a sort of a guide indicating you are headed in the right direction to advance in the game.

    The so/so - meh:

    1. The jump in difficulty when entering the EMMI areas is significant (probably too much so).

    2. The travel between level cutscenes are bland with a grayish blue background and Samus frozen in place. Some background music, Samis humming to herself, something to break up the monotony would have been a good polishing touch.

    3. The map graphics look dated like something from Super Metroid - bland and not very sharp (see Ori and the Will of Wisps for something more detailed).

The game is so well paced and never overstays it’s welcome or feels bloated. Bosses are challenging and may at first feel impossible but it is so well designed you learn them and gradually figure out how to beat them. It’s never cheap nor punishing. Every move can be avoided once learned and each time you die you start right outside the fight to jump straight back in to push it further.

Exploration is fun and the game controls are so tight running at a locked smooth 60fps. I only had a dip once. Samus is so satisfying to control. Game rewards you for sequence breaking and exploring if that’s your thing. Story had some pretty epic moments and if this is your first Metroid it has a great summary at the beginning to catch you up. There are plenty of people new to Metroid that are loving it and want to try older games now. I gave it a 10 because it’s my game of the year and I just haven’t had this much fun in a game on switch, PlayStation or PC in awhile. It’s great to see this Nintendo franchise back because it’s soooo different than anything else Nintendo makes. Highly recommended and totally worth the cost. Reminds me of why it created an entire genre (metroidvanias). It’s weird because I didn’t finish Ori, hollow night and some others but this one I just couldn’t put down. While you do backtrack it never feels like it …. Don’t know how to explain it. Freakin great game and man there’s pressure on Metroid Prime 4 whenever that comes out because this one killed it.

I think they made the game with the fans in mind and as a fan of the series, I really appreciate it! For me the difficulty is very well balanced, MS managed to create captivating new mechanics, made creative use of Quick Time Events, created a lively and interesting map to explore and made good use of Counter mechanics.

Not perfect but one of the best games in the series. The atmospheric sections of music could use improvement, pathways are blocked too much, and though I didn’t experience this myself, it’s too hard for some players. Everything else is pretty spot on

It is not as expansive as Super Metroid, but Dread makes much better use of everything Samus is capable of.

It is also probably both the most challenging and accessible title of the series. The game wants you to learn it and do well. I look forward to replaying this as often as I do Super Metroid.

A note on the story too: I never cared much about the plot of the series, but I always enjoyed the character designs. Dread does an excellent job of wrapping up the plot arc while also elevated the previous games by retroactively creating an amazing finale to build up to. It also helps make the thematic changes started in Fusion even more fantastic. Unlike it's inspiration, Alien, Metroids are part of a galactic ecosystem, and just like in real life, destroying a predator can dramatically change the environment in unpredictable ways. Dread certainly keeps up with that tradition while opening up some clever options for future games.

The return of the beloved gameplay formula is stronger than ever and truly encompasses 4 games worth of building. Each boss fight was innovative and gave a thrilling challenge, with each failure only strengthening resolve to try again and do better. In both terms of story and gameplay, this game truly feels like what the franchise has been building up to in every sense of the word. The best part of this amazing package is without a doubt is its use of cutscenes which perfectly blend the subtle storytelling Metroid is famous for with intense cinematic experiences. Metroid Dread really pushed this franchise to new heights, and minus a few minor gripes here and there, I can say without a doubt the entire experience was near perfection. Expand

To be completely transparent, this is a biased rating from a long-time Metroid fan, but it serves the purpose of countering the many below-five-out-of-ten reviews I read before witing my own, as most of them border on what I think is cognitive dissonance and contradictions. My objective score would be a 9/10, the point being that this game is in no way a 2/ or 3/10.

First of all, I'm not a graphics-obsessed player, so, to me, this game looks better than decent and at times even beautiful. The consensus I've seen so far is that it is good-looking, at least for a Switch game. I have no idea why some people (granted, a small minority) are bashing the way this game looks. I would assume they are expert programmers or something like that.

Secondly, there's the gameplay and the game's difficulty. This is such a strange topic because I read low scores complaining that it's too hard, with some mechanics like the EMMI chases being very annoying; and others complaining that there's a lot of handholding. So, which is it? After my Normal mode playthrough [11 hours, 100% items], which was fairly challenging on its own, I went directly into Hard mode and just finished it in half the time [5 hrs, ~30% Items], but I rescinded on collecting most of the items. Hard mode is very challenging, but not impossible, less even so if you went through Normal first. This is coming from someone that struggles so much with Dark Souls, that I've never completed that game. I read too many reviews complaining about this game's difficulty, and I comically wonder how many of those people make fun about game journalists' skills (or lack there-of). Or maybe they A-smashed their way past the tutorials/tips that tell you how to deal with enemies because they hate "hand-holding".

I enjoyed every fight, especially the last one, where I got my butt handed to me many times. When I finally won, I did get that feeling of accomplishment EA raves so much about. And all throughout the game I got pretty much the same feelings I experienced before while playing past Metroid titles.

To conclude, if you are well-versed in Metroidvanias and have played a vast catalogue of them, I won't judge you if this seemed average at best to your veteran taste and want to give it a 5/10. I would also agree this should be around the $30 mark, $40 at most. But like I said at the beginning, this isn't a 2 or a 3. I encourage everyone to play it, even if you don't buy it but just borrow it from a friend.

    Very disappointed about this opus.
Its super linear, whenever you try to explore you are blocked.
You don't have clear objectives, so you just progress and stumble upon every upgrade. Double jump is trigger only if you are spinning, making the feature not always reliable to pull in tight situation. Some repetitive mini-bosses, they are great, but not the fifth encounters. Too much

Too much cutscene for my taste, would have love to play some of those moment instead of just watching them.
The story is thin in my opinion. Yes, it progress the main metroid/chozo/samus storyline, but this is it. There seem to be a huge past about ZDR and we barely understand it beside that they drain heat from the planet core. Give us more Lore.

My big appreciation goes to the boss fights. The mechanics are tights and clear to read. Hard enough to learn something.

Otherwise, it was a very pricy 7h of gameplay.

Criticisms are mild: The game contains the "energy part" collectibles from Other M which while this method of gaining health may work in zelda, they feel incredibly out of place in a Metroid game. Speaking of collectibles, this game loves to dangle out of reach collectibles in your face at any opportunity it can, moreso than any other title in the series, which may be to encourage multiple visits to certain areas, but it's still a little jarring. Also without spoiling anything, the game almost feels like it has a case of Spiderman 3 syndrome with its antagonist. But those two criticisms aside, it's a very solid title, the best this series has gotten in over a decade. Definitely worth the price. Expand

The combat and movement is mostly very satisfying, but some moves don't work as well as they should like the double jump. The E.M.M.I. segments are pretty tense at first, but the excitement kind of wears off after a while. The game is fun when I actually know what I'm doing, which I didn't for half the game, but that's more my fault than the game's. The game is very challenging, but rarely feels too difficult. The graphics are pretty good but it feels like it could have been just a bit better. The music is kind of repetitive but can really amplify a tense situation. I can see why people love this game so much, but it isn't exactly my cup of tea. I had fun, but I'm not a huge fan of metroidvanias. It is one of the better ones I've played though. As a Super Metroid enthusiast, and now just getting in the world of the current indie Metroidvania titles (like Hollow Knight), I feel safe too say that Dread is a very good game. It still has some points to improve on future releases of the franchise, but the core of it, Nintendo got right:

    PROS:

    - Samus movement and skills: fluid, intuitive, responsive, fast. A blast to play

    - Difficulty: while I disagree with the people saying the game is way too hard, I think the developers should have put an easy mode for more casual player or even for the pre teen part of the Nintendo audience. But I personally think that they did a perfect job in tuning the difficulty, because while the game has its very difficult parts, the punishment for dying is almost zero! You can immediately try again from the boss door or e.m.m.i. zone entrance, with the exact same resources you had on your last try. What ends up happening is that you do die a lot on bosses, but your skill development rate also gets optimised, and when you get better at a game, thats when it gets really fun.

Combat: most boss fights are really carefully developed. And overall combat is pretty cool

    Graphics: very smooth

    CONS:

Forced linearity: In order to prevent the player from getting lost, the developers made backtracking impossible for most of the game. That takes away a good chunk of the exploration that made Metroid (and Metroidvanias) great in the first place. There's also not really an instance where you can get stronger to fight a certain boss (except for the last boss) since there's not many new items you have access to on any certain part of the game.

Repetitve themes: The e.m.m.i. is great, but it should occur only once or twice. Some repetitive bosses too (Chozo Soldiers, Chozo Robot Soldiers)

Atmosphere: for me, there's no dread in Metroid: Dread. No real sense of isolation or any of the classic Metroid atmosphere. It is not a horror sci-fi game, it is a great adventure action game, and thats the atmosphere I got from it.

Soundtrack: No memorable music like in the classics. They do repeat some of the classic themes every now and then, and those are the best tunes.

In 2021 the MetroidVania genre is incredibly saturated with phenomenal titles such as Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, Cave Story, Ori and the Blind forest and many others providing stiff competition. Dread does not do anything to stand above its peers, coupled with a much higher price point of 60 USD, it provides little incentive for both long time fans and new players to pick it up. According to developer interviews, this game is Yoshio Sakamoto’s original idea for Metroid Dread from all the way back in 2005 for the Nintendo DS.
