Expand

I don't rate this game lower because of the importance that Super Metroid has had for gaming, but in a universe in which Hollow Knight exists (and costs one fourth of the price of this game), what does Dread bring to the table? Not much, other than its name. Expand

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nice Metroidvania game. Overall nice look, nice lvl design. The boss fights were fun and so was some of the exploration. On the other hand, the Emmi sections were just cramped. The controls are sometimes fiddly and overloaded. Other platformers and Metroidvania games do that better. Exploring the individual areas hadn't appealed to me anymore, because you couldn't really have found anything great. Whether I can shoot 2 more missiles or not. At some point you had collected so many in the course of the game that it didn't matter. And there weren't really any other bonuses to be found. All in all, it was a good game, but it couldn't live up to the gameplay and the high expectations that you (more or less) have of a first-party title. So I only award 7 out of 10 points for an entertaining game.
If you're a Metroidvania fan or a Metroid fan in general, you're welcome. Everyone else should definitely play the demo first and see if this game is for you.

Just finished this game and wanted to write a review. The final result left me feeling happy and satisfied. I didn't find the difficulty too hard, just right, and the final boss fight was one of the best fights ive ever had in a game. The sense of progression truly makes you feel like a god at the end.

So why only an 8? Well, there are problems. Tons of people seem to love the game, so im aiming this one at the negatives mostly.

Emmis.... Dear god what a... DREADFUL idea. Get it?.... Ehm... Anyways, yeah, not the most exciting concept. They basically block you from exploring and are presented as unkillable gods who one shot you. The AI seems to know where you are even when it shouldn't, and the Emmis just roam around only the area you are in. End result is it feels cheap, it feels annoying, I guess I did feel Dread anytime I would enter an Emmi room, but im not sure its the kind that actually adds anything to the game. Mostly hated them.

Exploration. Well, thats what Metroid is about yeah? Well, I guess not, kind of.... For a good long while you dont actually get to explore much at all, like half the game actually. It felt like I was being forced into specific directions then blocked from exploring, much like the Emmis did. This game seems real set on ensuring you are cut off as often as possible. It does open up later, it does actually get really good, but getting there took some time and it was hard to keep interest.

UI/Completion - This kind of follows up naturally to exploration. Its why you explore, the items! and well, some sense of achievement. However navigating through the maps was sometimes completely unfun. You would see a place close by, however, because of "interesting" design, a door would just be locked. Yep, locked, no way to open it, Sealed shut. You would then have to go through the awful map, zoom in, and try to figure out another way, which many times ended up being a case of going ALL THE WAY AROUND THE MAP. Please, god, dont ever do this again. If you have paths, just let them be paths. Dont artificially railroad me and make collecting more frustrating then fun. Beyond that, it was just really hard trying to figure out wtf I was looking at on the map. Items weren't always on blinking spots on the map, the game doesn't tell you this, so you would collect 80% of a map items and see nothing at all. You would then have to go through every inch of the map trying to find the one item you are missing and its just not obvious. I should at least KNOW what im missing from items ive already seen. Make it more obvious, I could barely tell what I had already collected vs what I needed to collect. Just not good.

Information - This is a big one. Whats the most important thing in any game? Understanding how your pieces work, how the game works. Theres no way to play Chess unless you understand the pieces of Chess. This information shouldn't be hidden from you. So then WHY THE HELL DOES THE SHINESPARK HAVE BARELY ANY INFO COVERING IT?!!? How do you not relay information on this? Theres puzzles in this game I unfortunately had to look up how to beat on Youtube, and oh, I saw what was wrong. The game expects me to have expert knowledge of a concept that it hasn't bothered telling me almost anything about (The game briefly tells you to hold down after running, theres multiple mechanics outside of this it just never bothers to tell you). This is a major flop and its a requirement to 100% the game. I will say however once I understood the concept, it was quite fun doing the puzzles. I just shouldn't have to go watch Youtube videos to understand how my character functions.

Outside of those issues, which are big, the game somehow manages to pull an 8 out of me. I was very, very frustrated at many instances, I had no motivation to finish this after playing about 4-5 hours. It starts slow and feels linear, but man it picks up. The most important thing is how it feels when you finish, and for me, the finish was pretty much a 10, the other aspects were just so awful I cant give the score that 10.

Gameplay wise, I got just under 15 hours out of it. I spent probably 2-3 hours of that with it paused, not sure if that counts towards it, but either way 12-15 hours seems good to me. I 100% explored everything and theres a Hard Mode if I want to collect more art. If I wanted I could probably beat it again in half the time, thats about 20 hours of gametime. Now if only I can convince myself to want to go through Emmis sequences again...Yikes.

The biggest flaw is the movement, the analog stick just isnt good enough for the fiddly movement. This becomes a bigger problem the longer you play as more mechanics are added such as the shinesparking that the game relies way too much on in its shinesparking puzzles, they just arent fun as the solution is ususally obvious, just incredibly frustrating to do. Dreads controls need to be more tight for its difficulty to not feel cheap. Samus still moves with the same segmented crouch, then morph movement she had on snes and the stick sucks for it, the aiming is really good though so im glad they made that work well. The music is the worst from any metroid game, incredibly disappointing. EDIT: Now after reflecting for a while i think i was a bit hard on the game as i had decided to 100% before i started. The games controls become very frustrating first when you do several endgame shinesparking puzzles in a row. Im going to keep the score at a 7/10 because nintendo keeps the price at 60€ though Expand

Games that are too easy or you rarely ever die might as well be a movie. I love a challenge.

My only complaints that keep it from being a 10 are:
    - The controls for the shinespark ability are very fidgety, and simply don't respond sometimes, even if you do them as directed
    - Tutorials teaching you how to use new abilities disappear right after you learn the ability and can't be dug up later if you need a reminder (or if you can, I couldn't find it)
    - Reskinned enemies and repeat bosses (or same but multiple this time) take the thrill out of it a few times. It's not terrible in that regard, a minor nuisance, but it caused me to growl a few times.
    - I guess the heavily text-based intro is a throwback to the side-scroller Metroids this one is based on, but it's the 2020s and let's be honest, a well-made cutscene would've been nicer than paragraphs of exposition and backstory.

I really didn't enjoy my time with Metroid Dread.

As others have said, the game is brutally hard. The enemies move extraordinarily quickly. And, when they connect, it's a huge amount of damage. Could the game be fixed simply with a difficulty slider? Heck, could an option to cut the damage dealt in half go a long way toward making it fun? Clearly, the developers must have realized

So, why isn't there a difficulty slider? I believe that if you could crank the thing down to easy mode that there wouldn't be anything left. They needed the difficulty to be hard, because: the story is thin and there's minimal world building. The puzzles aren't challenging. If you could play as a tourist, the game would just be too short, and you'd say it wasn't worth $60. (It's not worth $60.)

I had about four hours in, fighting some boss. After 20 or 30 tries, I realized that I wasn't making any progress. That the small wins I had were due more to random luck than developing any particular skill with the game. Maybe people are playing this thing with a mouse and keyboard adapter instead of the pro controller?

And, ugh... the lack of music. The lack of atmosphere! I really can't understand all the positive reviews.

This is the 2nd Metroid game I haven't finished in 25 years. You know what the "Other" one was.

Get out. What you want is not important. This game will not accommodate you. If you want to succeed it will take hard work and rote memorization. Buttons must be pressed precisely. Bosses must be defeated precisely and repeatedly. Things must be done in the proper order. Rules must be followed. Violators will be executed. Any exploration or deviation will not be tolerated. There is only punishment--only pain.

The brutal design constantly forces you to play the game the way THEY intended it to be played. What you want to do is not important. If you think because you managed to defeat a difficult boss after hours of practice you deserve to be rewarded with a bit of free time to explore and enjoy your new weapon. Think again. The door has been locked behind you. Now have ANOTHER boss, and maybe ANOTHER stealth section where any slip-up, no matter how small, means instant death and repetition. There is no varied pacing in this game. Only brutal challenge after brutal challenge.

Even if you do manage, for just a moment, to break free from the harsh and rigid DESIGN, what do you expect to find? If you're expecting to find interesting rewards behind that wall, (as you would in any modern indie Metroidvania) YOU. WILL. NOT. You will only find missile upgrades and energy tanks. Nothing else exists in this hellscape. And trust me these same boring relics of the NES era, will be useless to you here anyway. Bosses will utterly destroy you if you haven't memorized the patterns and practiced them to complete perfection, no matter how many you find. A couple more missiles or one extra hit will make no difference.

The controls are great, though! Thanks, but I hate it.

A bit too linear at times in that some paths are blocked randomly to guide you in the right direction but that is probably a good thing for most beginners at least, and you eventually get to backtrack and collect the hidden items with the skills gained. The only unique new thing that is supposed to be the "dread" part is the kind of stealth and escape part when fighting against the emmi bots, for me it was kind of boring, you retry the emmi parts generally 1-10 times to find the correct path and then it's done, but I'm not a horror fan so I probably just miss that point; for the comparison I do find the bots in breath of the wild more menacing. The music and sounds are great. The controls are perfect, perhaps a bit tricky with triggers at times but in general if you make mistake it's on you and not bad controls. The boss fights are challenging but all have recognisable patterns to learn so it really is all about learning the boss patterns, rather than having lightning reflexes and good luck, which is one of the main point that sets it apart from poorly designed indie metroidvanias. Metroid Dread has some great ideas, and I did have fun with it. But it is flawed and held back by a few minor issues and one majorly not fun mechanic

    What it does well:

Controls - The gameplay and combat is the strongest part of the game. The controls are responsive and smooth. New abilities make it a lot of fun to move around and avoid enemies. My only complaint is that some abilities could be mapped better. Particularly any spot you have to run and jump then have both bumpers pressed to aim and fire the grappling hook. The game is a lot more combat focused than exploration focused, which I didn't like, but the controls made that not as bad

Boss fights - besides the scorpion boss that I found a little tedious, the boss fights were a lot of fun and challenging. I'd say the boss fights are the best part of the game. Some of them are pretty hard at first, but they are very rewarding.

Collectables - Like other Metroids, it is fun to get upgrades and go looking for secrets. The map blinks when there is a hidden path, which is a nice qol upgrade.

    What it does poorly:

E.M.M.I encounters - The worst part of the game by far. They are tedious, slow down exploration, and just aren't fun or interesting. And every single one has you do the same boring miniboss fight to get a one time use item so you can kill it. If E.M.M.I. were not in the game I'd probably score it an 8. They ruin the game that much.

Inconsistent difficulty - I found myself rarely ever dying, then I'd get to a point and die 10 times in a row. Then breezing through puzzles before finding one that isn't remotely intuitive or just badly designed. The 2 bad ones that stick out are standing by something in the foreground to lower the water level, and magically knowing you can shoot through a wall to hit something to explode it. I liked the challenge, but it doesn't seem to know if it wants to be easy or really hard.

Music - the music is just bad and boring. It is not an exaggeration to say that Super Metroid, a 16 bit game released over 2 decades ago, has much better music

Story - The story sucks, but that was never a strong point of the series.

Summary: If you want a more combat oriented Metroid, you'll probably enjoy it. If you are yearning for the more exploration based titles like Super Metroid, you'll probably be disappointed. I really, and I mean REALLY hated the E.M.M.I. encounters.

There's no world building, no environmental storytelling. I think part of what made Super Metroid, SotN, Hollow Knight, and even Dark Souls so appealing was that they presented a cohesive and interconnected world. That feeling is lost as you're through teleporters to completely unrelated areas. So far, it feels like Metroid:Dread is to Super Metroid what Final Fantasy XIII was to Final Fantasy VI.

The new gimmick added to the game is a set of enemies which are all carbon copies of each other which can instakill you and most of the time are unkillable. This tries to be suspenseful as you run around the portion of the map that they're in -- hence the "Dread" subtitle. They even rumble the joycons like a heartbeat to let you know that you're *supposed* to be scared. But this ends up being tedious, annoying, and boring more than anything else. So it seems like it tried and failed at being a survival horror as well.

Lastly, the load times. The game has them. For a 2.5D platformer. In the year 2021.

All in all, if you remove the Nintendo and Metroid branding you end up with a harmless but forgettable title that would have sold on steam for $15-$20 but few people would pick up unless it as on sale for $10 or less. Certainly not with the money.

It really sends you into its worlds full of boss fights, Emmi sequences and creative areas. As previously note, Emmis are the flagship mechanic for this title and while their reception is mixed- it really creates a sense of terror making you squirm whenever they get close and giving you the smallest chance to escape from their clutches, giving a sense of that hard-but-fair feel players are itching for in a modern era of easy videogames. Boss fights aren't fantastic compared to contemporaries like Hollow Knight or Blasphemous but are incredibly entertaining but one specific boss midway through the game (people who own it will know what I'm referring to) is a contender for the best of this year. Unfortunately, nothing else really lives up to that quality and the repetition of the Chozo soldiers become old quickly- especially when most alterations are really just a colour change or adding more soldiers). My only other complaint lies in the lack of direction: you are only allowed to go one way and treading off the straight path is punished which in the late game when you are jumping around from world to world really makes you just want a more linear path or even a suggestion of your next venture. These complaints are fairing tame and other issues occur due to hardware limitations. The game looks fantastic and runs fairly well, animations are pretty as always and fights are flashy and fun. Hopefully, this game will age even better than what came before.

The control scheme is janky -- certain weapons require you to hold down three buttons to work properly -- and many of the moves won't work when you want them to. The strangeness and unreliability of the controls makes an already frustrating game all the more frustrating. This is a classic 2D platformer to the extent that it makes you want to throw your controller through the TV screen.

ORI and the Will of the Wisps is a much, MUCH better game -- not necessarily more or less hard, but certainly smarter and more inventive in its layout and execution. While ORI owes a debt to Metroid games past, Dread is nothing better than a clunky, rage-inducing rehash of better games past.

What I did not like, personally, were the E.M.M.I enemies. The escape and evade aspects were fine due to the fluid movement that Metroid has but it gets old after you have done it a bunch. The other part, after you have dealt with the Control Unit of each area, is to kill the E.M.M.I. It just feels tacked on. You stand and fire at its head until you're ready to fire a charged shot. This is highly repetitive and I feel like the devs could have done more with such a high profile enemy of the game. The game even seems to make a joke, at its own expense, when the final E.M.M.I just dies after making an attempt to transition to another run and hide scene.

I also just feel like the game didn't try to break the mold very much. Had it tried to change things up a lot more it would have been a perfect game but it still remains one of my favorite games of 2021 and I will be going back at it again for a Hard mode run. Oh, yea, one last gripe. Hard mode is locked behind beating the game. I've always just felt like that was a bad practice.

Nostalgia is there and it is definitely updated and polished from the old games, but the new counter and the forced use of duck and aim makes the game need precision that is impossible with a controller. An incredible experience, I had plenty of fun. The controls are very smooth. Lots of thought went into the level design. The game is challenging but the right way, it has various mechanics to master. I only wished it was longer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't remember the last time I played a game with such a ridiculously complex and unintuitive controls. I'm spending the majority of the time trying to remember which button combination I need to press, rather than enjoying the game world. it's incredibly furstrating, a mess of cussing and frayed temper. not satisfying at all. the level design is bad. the entire map is a mess, with not much in the way of recognisable areas that would be familiar when you look at the map. you spend most of the time lost, with arbitrary roadblocks shoved in your way for no discernible reason. the suit design is nonsense, with 'lights' behaving like painted lines and meandering all over her body without rhyme or reason. puzzle design is inconsistent. for example, the game tells you specifically that your scan ability will show you blocks that you can break with your abilities, HOWEVER there is a wall that can be destroyed by power bombs that is not marked in any way. just one example. the narrative is disjointed and nonsensical. there is ample opportunity for various concepts and character history to be dripfed to us so we are reminded of context of the situation, instead it feels like the end is one massive context dump and shock reveal all in one. the game just expects you to accept all this stuff seemingly out of the blue.
lastly, when did they decide to blow up a planet, and how exactly did they physically do that?

also, whoever came up with the idea of QTE as a major required game mechanic, fire them. that trash gimmick does not belong in a metroid style game.

I will try to keep it brief but also include some game analysis stuff in here. I've played all the 2D Metroid games except for 2. And I can confidently say that this is easily my favourite Metroid game and also among my favourite games of all time.

The difficulty is my favourite part of this game as it's so refreshing to play something that really tests your skills. The past Metroid games weren't that difficult as I never even died in Super and Zero Mission. Fusion was actually slightly hard but I managed. With this game though? I died to Kraid a lot until I got better. And that's the best part, you die until you get better at playing the game and better understand the attack patterns. It was a triumph when I got past a boss. In an era where games are so easy, this game is really refreshing.

The environments are really great in this game. I found that the graphics and how it's 3D add so much to the atmosphere you feel when going through the map. Burenia and Ghavron were magical when I stepped foot into them. I think this game also does an incredible job of subtly telling the story throughout the game by utilizing the 3D backgrounds. There were a lot of mysterious things and objects you could find when looking into the backgrounds. I would expect this game to pull it off better than the past games as the past games have pretty basic backgrounds. Also, this game uses original locations where as Super and Zero mission kept using Brinstar and other various locations like that. And one last point, Burenia gave me a very "liminal" feeling which was incredible as Super gave that same feeling when I went through the wrecked ship.

The singlehandedly best part about this game is the scope they reached. The past Metroid games feel a lot more basic compared to this entry as the rooms were smaller, and the boss fights weren't nearly as involved. This game really captures the adventure aspect the best out of the series by simply offering way more depth to the maps and abilities.

This game is a masterpiece through and through, and despite other metroidvanias existing, I think this game offers a grander experience compared to other games in the genre. It really earned its best adventure award at TGA.

No doubt, it's a great entry in the series, and a great game overall.

Now, onwards to the reasons the I didn't give the game a 10. First, I don't hate the E.M.M.I., but I don't particularly like them either, mainly because the insta death mechanic coupled with the fact that the counter reaction times are random. These robotic fiends also take away a bit of the exploration aspect Metroid is known for, given that you are constantly pressured to run from them in a good chunk of the game.

And since Metroidvanias are flourishing in the indie scenario, I think a little comparison between Dread and my personal favorite indie release is due. In my opinion, Hollow Knight is the absolute king of Metroidvanias to this date. It has perfect pacing, combat and exploration. Most character abilities are useful both for traversal and combat, which isn't the case in Dread, where some skills are clearly used only for the sake of unlocking new areas on the map. Finally, regarding game length, Metroid Dread is kinda short, lasting for about 8 to 10 hours on a first playthrough, whereas Hollow Knight lasts for a whooping 30 hours. This difference in content becomes even more significant considering I bought Dread for full $60, and Hollow Knight for $7.

All that said, you can't go wrong with Dread. Now, back to waiting for Prime 4.

First is parrying: While I feel most of the parrying in the game is well-done and generous, the question I had is what is parrying doing in a Metroid game? You're walking around with a rocket launcher attached to your arm, parrying makes no sense in this world. This feels like an attempt to make Metroid more like a Souls game which feels backwards, Metroid is supposed to be the game other games are copying, not vice-versa.
It feels like Nintendo is attempting to make Metroid into a flagship series after decades of neglect and running into the problem that they don't actually understand what's so great about the classic Metroid games. There's a slowness and an experimental feel, I don't think there's anything wrong with the Emmi sequences but it does feel that trying to add all this momentum takes away from the relaxation and creepiness of slowly exploring an alien world.

Super metroid is often seen as the best metroid game, and its sequel fusion added more story, but less exploration. Zero mission struck a nice blend between the two but had many minor issues, partly due to it being a remake of the first metroid. Overall, it seems dread has done a zero mission, where it takes the best ideas from super, fusion and samus returns and compiles them into the ultimate package. It has the exploration of super, the storytelling of fusion and the improved combat action mechanics of samus returns. It then goes even further, choosing to spice exploration up with emmi sections that create super buttclenching encounters, improve story telling by using less dialogue and more facial expressions from samus (which definitely worked out better than something like other m), and the new combat speed and moves like the slide and flash shift make dread a fast paced thrill ride. This is amazing as the fast paced combat never interferes with the slow paced exploration. This beautiful combination makes dread stand high next to its predecessors, and even higher on the switches library, making it my favourite metroid game and one of the best switch games, right up with botw and Mario odyssey.
Notice i am writing this review a while after the games release, as to get a proper opinion of it (many negative reviews were written 1-2 days after, which is just a bad joke) .
The difficulty of dread has been a point of contention for many, but i never saw it as a problem once. The game is inherently skill based, and steadily teaches the player its combat mechanics. Aswell as this, respawning after a boss puts you at the boss door to avoid breaking the games pacing, and if you are entirely stuck, as a metroidvania dread allows the player to slow down, backtrack, explore and find more powerups to help them in battle. If you are stuck or having a hard time in dread, it is simply t the player who is at fault, as dread gives the player every opportunity to succeed. I can see why others may have an issue with learning boss counter timings, however this is a live and learn experience, dying in dread is like I said, not the end of the world.
In general, dread has to be the best game of 2021, with huge story moments, intense and heart pumping boss fights, and tranquil moments of exploration, with soothing ambient music tracks to enable your explorative mind. The games great, and I cant fault it, buy it.

Exploring the planet is fun and you can find a lot of stuff in every area like missiles and energy tanks. The bosses in this game are very hard, but that doesn't matter for me.
The bosses were very unbalanced because i some bosses were much harder then other ones.
The E.M.M.I are the gimmick of the game. They are locked in certain areas which is disappointing but it would make the game harder then it already is.

The game runs on lockd 60 FPS, but when you move to another area the game's loading screen runs on low FPS which is disappointing. The music is very good.

In overall this game os one of the best games that you can play on the switch right now. Exploring and combat is very hard and fun. It is a game that has very good graphics and great FPS. Only the loading screens can be a little bit better. If you have a switch and you want to play a hard and fun exploration game, this is a must-buy for you.

It's possible to defeat each one if you spend some time learning their moves, then what seemed impossible becomes quite easy to achieve.

I only wish the map was more comfortable to use and maybe more meaningful secrets would be also great to have. Other than that, I spent 11 hours and it was worth it.

In fact, MD feels more like a walking and searching simulator, with a few boss fights to spice things up, and incredibly annoying stealth passages between.
All you basically do, is run through the areas, and look under every rock. And, poor you if you missed a secret passage-
You might end up running through the whole map for countless hours, without any clue what to do-
gone are the ingame hints. Get lost, and your lost!

Which makes the game feel slow, unituitive, and often enough annoying and just senseless.

I still enjoy this iteration a bit, but it seriously feels like the NES or GB title with revised graphics, and for a metroid title of the newest generation, its a HUGE disappointment for me...
I didnt even finished the game, as at some point, i was simply fed up...

As a game itself, i would rate it with 6 points.
Regarding the hilarious price, and the very little "real" playtime, i give it annoverall score of 4.

No spoilers on how you kill them though. The use of Samus' powers are perfectly implemented. Not only that but the amiibo functionality is great. The Metroid dread Samus gives you a permanent health upgrade (an extra bar of health) and heals you 200 once per day. While the E.M.M.I amiibo gives you a permanent missile upgrade, and gives you 10 extra missiles once per day. Although those are the best amiibos, all other Metroid amiibos work as well. The Super Smash bros Samus, Samus Aran returns and zero suit Samus heals you by 200 once per day, and Metroid, Ridley, and dark Samus all give you 10 missiles each once per day. The gameplay is extremely fair. The enemies do a ton of damage yes, but almost all the enemies drop health when they die so you rarely feel too weak. Plus there are Chozo stations around that can heal you and restock your missiles. Without spoiling anything, I will say that the boss's and the boss battles are prenominal.
