Metroid Dread, AKA Metroid 5, is at least the sixth mainline Metroid game. Given that Metroidvania is right there in the name of the genre, you know what you’re in for – you start out weak, conveniently deprived of all your weapons and gear from the previous game by the Inciting Event, after which point you then have to go around the environment, beating bosses and finding rooms to collectMetroid Dread, AKA Metroid 5, is at least the sixth mainline Metroid game. Given that Metroidvania is right there in the name of the genre, you know what you’re in for – you start out weak, conveniently deprived of all your weapons and gear from the previous game by the Inciting Event, after which point you then have to go around the environment, beating bosses and finding rooms to collect items which allow you to explore more of the game, unlocking new areas to explore and bosses to beat, resulting in you gaining an ever increasing amount of power until you beat the game.

You are Samus, a bounty hunter whose job seems to really be professional exterminator. You have an arm cannon you can shoot, more powerful missiles you can launch, and you can slide to go under short things.

Of course, as the game goes on, you gain the ability to charge your arm cannon, get stronger missiles, can jump infinitely in the air, underwater, go through hot lava and frigid cold areas, dash, run super fast, curl up into a ball and drop bombs, and countless other upgrades. If you’ve played previous Metroid games, or even played Super Smash Bros, you probably have a good guess as to what kind of things you’ll be getting, as it isn’t anything new.

That said, the game is pretty competent. It manages to be linear despite being a heavily non-linear environment, with you criss-crossing back across areas you completed previously to reach new places. Instead of tedious direct backtracking, the levels keep looping back on themselves, allowing you to get to where you need to go pretty quickly – a good bit of game design.

Unfortunately, the game still has the other, tedious kind of backtracking to collect secrets you missed, and this is not much fun. A lot of them are just “use the new power up here to collect the item” and the only real puzzles that aren’t are running/shinespark puzzles, a mechanic you unlock a way into the game that allows you to propel yourself at high speeds which does not have a very good control scheme. Because of the tediousness, I would recommend mostly not backtracking until the end of the game, but even then, it’s still going to be annoying because of how spread out the game’s “fast travel points” (which are only unlocked at the VERY end of the game) are.

This left me with something of a sour note at the end of the game; the game actually is not very great for exploration, and while it does an okay job of making you feel clever as you are going through sometimes, oftentimes it is just “I need to do this next.”

That being said, it didn’t spoil the game for me as a whole. The core mechanics are mostly fairly decent, and the game has a whopping 30 bosses – which, considering it is less than 14 hours to beat the whole game 100%, means you are fighting 3 bosses an hour or so, more if you don’t bother to go back and 100% it. That’s a quite dense game, and it works very well – you are always running into new things, and while a lot of the bosses aren’t super remarkable, some of them are very well done, and the final few bosses in particular are quite neat to fight and do a good job of rewarding you for remembering all the game’s mechanics.

The story and plot, however, are quite terrible. I had only briefly played previous Metroid games, and while I was aware of the metaplot, I had zero investment in Samus Aran. There’s only really three characters in the game, and one of them appears very briefly, and Samus herself is near-mute and has almost no dialogue whatsoever – which is very awkward as there’s a lot of moments where you’d expect her to say something, and she just awkwardly, silently stares at whatever it is she’s seeing. This at least makes some sense with the monsters, but there’s a few times where she SHOULD have replied and didn’t, and it felt really weird.

The plot itself is mostly an excuse to make another game, and it didn’t really connect with me on an emotional level at all; it is mostly just throwing you around to the next challenge, with no real attachment to anything you’re encountering. This is quite the contrast with other games I’ve played recently, and with AAA games in general these days – and while it isn’t strictly necessary, it definitely can make games stronger, with games like Celeste and Hollow Knight giving you some emotional investment in their world and characters, and games like God of War pretty much carrying the game on its back with the quality of the work and characters.

The best feature of this game, however, was its brevity. Where so many AAA games feel it necessary to stretch themselves out endlessly, Metroid Dread was always moving towards its end point, and at less than 14 hours in length, I was very happy with how long it was – it had the amount of content it needed, it didn’t throw in a ton of filler (though the backtracking for items was annoying), and the pacing was very good.

That being said, the best part of the game is definitely exploring the world and discovering items and finding shortcuts and all that. They definitely have the metroidvania formula down, so that was pretty fun. The EMMI robots that stalk you around the planet were definitely scary, but i wish the stakes were a bit higher with them. When you get killed by one of the EMMIs, it’s kinda stressful n scary but the player isn’t really punished that much for dying. Art direction was good; storyline wasn’t all that deep but i mean it’s not really a story driven game so who cares.

This game certainly earns a 75% on the Dieter Meter. I enjoyed it

Metroid Dread is the first Metroid game I have ever played. I was shocked at how addicted I became to the gameplay loop of unlocking new abilities that I had to master immediately to continue. This is a must play for Switch owners.

Best gameplay, best graphics of all 2d metroids. It might not have the atmosphere of Super Metroid, but it's such a treat to play a recent classic take of this franchise. Best bosses, very cool art direction, atmospheric tunes (not the best ones, but great). The close-ups of Samus during loading times add a lot of flavor to the visuals.

As a fan of Samus Returns on the 3DS, I can say that Mercury Steam really gets what Metroid is and the franchise is in great hands with them. We'll get a sequel much sooner this time, no doubt. You owe it to yourself to play Metroid Dread if you're into the recent metroidvania games like Hollow Knight. Gamers have been praising this franchise for 30 years for a reason. It's all about fast gameplay, atmosphere, hidden items, amazing boss fights.

About the navigation, you have to know how to read the map. Whenever you get a new power-up, you have to look where you can use it. If you don't know where to go next, a little backtracking will send you in the right direction. You have to learn how to follow the breadcrumbs. Not a deal breaker.

Bring us a sequel, Mercury Steam!!!

If it's going to be a piece of utter crap like this one, just let the franchise die in peace.

Navigation is a mess, you constantly need to hit 2-3 buttons, you can never explore anything, you just need to RUN RUN RUN and HIDE HIDE HIDE. That's all you do in this game, the hide and seek gimmick becomes boring after exactly 1 minute.

By the way, you need to follow a walkthrough to get the morph ball. This is even more confusing than the first Metroid on NES.

Just do what I did: go back and play Metroid, Metroid Zero, Metroid Samus Returns, Metrid Other M, Metroid Fusion, the Prime trilogy. And forget this abomination was even released, the Metroid franchise is dead, let it rest.

REVIEW UPDATE: after forcing myself to play through this pile of garbage, I can conclude that Metroid Dread is one of the (if not the) worst games on Nintendo Switch and maybe the worst games that has been released in the last ten years on any Nintendo console. This game is pure garbage.

I really wanted to enjoy this. One of my favorite series. Better than Other M. But it feels a lot more frustratingly designed than previous entries. Some enemies offer instant death which is annoying and mostly increases the time I spend on load screen. This is a ‘fine’ entry. But there’s a lot of entries in the series, and out of the series, that are far better.

The story is super well done. I really like the premise and everything that happens. Cutscenes are snappy, the villian is interesting, and the ending is satisfying and meaningful. Samus characterization is well done,

Now for the bad - the exploration aspects to this game. This game, as a good Metroidvania should do, does NOT INCENTIVIZE EXPLORATION. There is extremely minimal gameplay reward for exploration. Even when you get all energy tanks and missiles, you barely are stronger or more capable then before. It's essentially a waste of time to explore the map. The only reason you'd enjoy exploration is for the exploration itself. But the game doesnt actually reward you or make you feel good about finding secrets and new paths to areas because it's pointless and doesn't improve character progression. This is the backbone of the Metroidvania genre and it fails here.

The game instead, chooses to focus on action and boss fights. They damage the exploration and Metrdoivania aspects in order to serve to make it a better action game. It succeeds in this, but I just don't like action games. That's why I play Metroid. Rayman and Cuphead are much better and well made action games, that get right to the point. This game is more Rayman and Cuphead than it is Hollow Knight, a game that massively rewards exploration.

Last big negative, the areas all look and feel the same. There a dark, black filled corridoors inside a mechanical environment. It just felt stale to me. This was made even worse by the lack of melodic music. They attempted to make the music more "atmospheric" in style, which is acceptable in theory, but they did a very poor job of it. The best tracks in the game are just remixes of older themes. So, without cool music, there's even less reward for exploration and wandering around. The EMMI fights also serve to degrade the exploration experience; the game becomes a run-stealth type of game, focusing on adrenaline and repetition. It takes away from the somber, lonely feel I enjoy playing Metroid games. Instead of getting lost in the world, I have a constant reminder i am playing a video game and need to replay the level 20 times to beat it, like I did with a game like Ninja Gaiden or TMNT back on NES. Just retry the level over and over again. The world design is very gameified in this way, instead of feeling like a natural, breathing world like most Metroid games.

Anyway, basically the game is bad at atmosphere, exploration, music, and good in gameplay and being an action game. I rated it 4 because because a good action game is not what Metroid should be about.

Although the gameplay is strong as was expected, it is a rushed effort. The chases are great fun but the game lacks atmosphere that classic games in the series had such as Super Metroid and Zero Mission. On top of that the game isn't running at optimal 1080p resolution when docked, that is unacceptable for a 2.5D game when a game like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs at 1080p even in split screen.

Maybe the best Metroid ever! I’m a huge fan of the series, but this new iteration is something special. They truly nailed it! It’s not as much of a reinvention of the franchise as I had suspected it would be, for better or worse.

Mechanics: the controls here are maybe the tightest I’ve seen in any game. Everything feels responsive and exact. I only really found myself fumbling with the controls when during puzzles requiring very quick execution of the more advanced actions, which is fine because it’s intentional so. Overall, I was extremely pleased with how precisely and immediately Samus’ movements responds to input. The animations for Samus are fluid and much appreciated!

Upgrades: We saw the return of the series’ staples, as well as some really nice new gear. There were a few upgrades that I found lackluster, but still a very strong set. I appreciated that the very last major upgrade was the item that it was, rather than stacking the coolest gear at the end (as Prime 3 did).

Emmis: I really loved these things! They were genuinely thrilling to deal with, but didn’t feel totally unreasonable either. I did find on my second playthrough (switched to hard) that avoiding them had become too easy. It’s difficult to implement such an enemy, and still have them feel threatening, given how extremely maneuverable Samus is. So, given that, I don’t know how they could have improved them without compromising on making it cheap/unfair.

Environments: This is truly a beautiful game; the lighting and aesthetics are splendid. The water effects in particular stand out. Overall the mood and atmosphere of the environments are well developed and full, which is common in Metroid games. I did find that I never wondered where to go/what to do next, which was a bit disappointing, but probably necessary to aid newcomers to the series. Music is also very fitting.

Story: I quite liked it, although some of the choices made went against the grain for me as a long time fan.

Overall an excellent entry in a series that has set a very high bar! I’ve honestly never played a more flawless game: they got everything just right! Highly recommend.

As someone who's never really been into the metroidvannia genre, this game certainley changed that for me, all the boss fights felt very fun. My main problem with any metroidvannia is the aspect where you're left clueless on how to get the next item to progress. I didn't feel that nearly as much with Dread, I'm very excited to play more of the Metroid series.

I think the map forces you to take unnecessary detours (even by the standards of other Metroids). There is an imbalance between exploration and combat. In other Metroids the combat takes a backseat while in Dread the boss and mini boss fights are exaggerated. There were times where I was fighting three bosses or mini-bosses in a row. 40% exploration and 60% combat.

You truly feel like an explorer when moving through the world of ZDR. Lush environments and strange creatures are abundant, making traveling through the mostly abandoned planet a surprisingly immersive experience for a 2D game. The story is lacking, but considering I'm missing most of the story from the other games I went in expecting that. The EMMI sections are the highlight, providing intense subsections to the game where you oftentimes feel completely powerless, no matter how much you prepare yourself. If anything I was a bit disappointed that the EMMIs weren't further developed, as some are pretty similar to one another. There's an issue of getting stuck in the game though. Had to get outside help when I got trapped between the 1st and 2nd area. The solution was destroying several hidden tiles, but there was another set of tiles nearby that seemed like the obvious solution that the game was directing me toward so I never noticed the hidden ones. This is pretty dumb design IMO, but it was really the only instance of this happening. Overall, I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Metroidvanias, or for anyone looking for a challenge. I hope this isn't the last 2D Metroid game we will see on the switch.

The game is about 10 hours long, so keep that in mind when purchasing

Also there's lots of advanced mechanics for those who'd like to dive deep into the game. One thing I didn't like is that Dread is much more linear than other Metroids. Lots of one-way gates that simply discourage exploration. And that's a very bad thing in a Metroidvania...

$60 price point is shady, I agree. At this price I'd recommend this game only to hardcore Metroidvania fans. You won't regret it :)

    Points positifs:

If you're like me, there's already a constant low level dread in metroidvanias as far not wanting to go the wrong direction first. The EMMIs only compound that.
It really just nails the metroidvania formula and has that familiarity of the similar powerups to Super Metroid. Plus the game looks phenomenal. The controls are super tight - except the aforementioned space jump, but thats tradition at this point. It can get VERY difficult at points, but I really felt that I was able to get better each time I died and replayed the same boss. It felt very satisfying to finally defeat it, and didn't feel cheap or overly frustrating. Also I never looked at a gamefaq until I finished the game. That's rare as even the best games have that one spot where you feel stuck.
Overall, this is possibly the best Metroid yet.

I loved the return to Super Metroid and I appreciated the game's simplicity. Like Super Metroid and a proper Metroidvania the exploration was the star of the show. Traversal was a highlight of my experience. Just moving through the rooms is satisfying. The game is just the right length. Something that a lot of developers get wrong. Many pride themselves on bigger is better and go open world.

Along with the storytelling, the game's ending feels extremely rushed in every aspect. The bosses, except for one, are all too simple, unfortunately. The developers were unable to give them a difficult game design other than by making them spam dozens of projectiles for the most part. The game does a great job with guiding you through the map without being too linear. Backtracking always felt natural. This in direct contrast with Hollow Knight which I felt was too long and too open, often times traversing the map or figuring out where you should be started to feel like a chore in the late-game. Dread was just about the perfect length and did not overstay its welcome.

    The bad:
There are pacing issues. The game starts off slow, which isn't unusual for the genre, but the time between unlocking new abilities was really long for quite a while and then all of a sudden when the game opens up they start getting fed to you at an overwhelming rate. There were also quite a few mini-boss enemies that were re-used way more often than they should have been. Soundtrack is too safe, and leaves a little to be desired. The Emmi sections can be hit or miss. Most of the time, I enjoyed them, but there were 2 that I did not.

Last note I didn't pay $60 for this game, maybe if I did, I would have been more critical with my review, but oh well.

    - Too many EMMI encounters, making them stop being interesting and become just annoying.
    - Too many repeated miniboss fights.
    - The level design is the biggest villain, disturbs the flow of progression and pacing of the game, most of the time the game gives you little to no information about what direction you should take, what is not a problem, but the exaggerated disorientation on a map that is not only part of the problem, but also the catalyst for it, leads to the game's biggest flaw, unnecessary and tiring backtracking. The game's scenarios don't stand out visually, with few exceptions, everywhere is too similar visually and structurally-wise, maze-like layouts, terribly fragmented and interconnected, full of blocked passages and hidden paths, very confusing.
At some point in the game, I got tired of getting lost, wondering where to find a certain upgrade, or where exactly was that room I had passed through that needed this upgrade I just got, making me consider dropping the game. Anyway, at the end of the game, after 8 hours, the stress I went through was too much that it almost overcame the fun and made me feel like I had played Metroid Dread for 30 hours.

I've never played a Metroid game before this one, and i´ve gotta say, I LOVED IT!. It's such a fun game, the combant is fluent, is extremely fun to experiment with your attacks, the devs thought about the possibility of getting the "flash shift" and "bomb" items before a boss you have to fight in order to progress because if you get these items (wich you aren't supposed to get before this boss) you can use them to fight this boss, you can even find a certain platform that allows you to use the bombs against this boss.
The story isn't very special, but it's interesting enough to get you engaged, and as I said, the gameplay is the main reason this game is so fun and the map design is beautiful and filled with attention to details most people wouldn't even see and it makes you use logic to get certain items.
You start with nothing and you end up slowly becoming an invincible killing machine, the game is quite hard but never to the degree it feels impossible, making the challenge extremly fun and rewarding.

    My only few complains are:
    1) Sometimes is not obvious where you have to go and the game doesn't help you, it's so easy to get lost I had to look at a playthrough a couple times, it's kind of annoying until you get a certain item further in the game that helps aliviate this problem

    2) Most bosses are extremly fun, but the minibosses are kind of repetitive and do almost the same things, especially the little BRAIN bosses, those where very uninspired and repetitive they're the only bosses I didn't liked

    3) Just like a lot of switch games, I've experienced a few FPS drops, in my fisrt playthrough I didn't have as many (Mainly in loading screens but I don't count them because at that poin I ain't playing, im just waiting for the game to load), but in the second playthrough I did encounter more, is not extremly annoying but it's a valid criticism to keep in mind.

    4) The lenght, this game is relatively short if you know where to go, you can realisticaly finish it in 4 hours if you don't die a single time and know where to go, but thankfully this game has replay value by unlocking new dificulties and unlocking a gallery of photos that you earn depending on how long it took you to finish the game and how many items you collected and they're adding new free content wich is nice (Easier mode, 1 hit kill mode and soon a boss rush mode)

    5) This game, just like every AAA game, is $60, I feel for what it offers is quite high, thankfully I bought a phisical copy that was discounted. I would reccomend you to wait for a discount but if you really want it and wanna spend full price feel free to do so.

IN CONCLUSION: Amazing game, good story, amazing progress feeling, amazing and fun gameplay. It has it's flaws like repetitiveness, easy to get lost, a few tiny FPS issues and a high price. But those bad things didn't ruined the experience for me, I enjoyed a lot and now im a Metroid fan

Metroid Dread was a torrential monsoon that came out of left field during a time of drought in the Metroid community. Samus Returns on 3DS was a decent addition, albeit a remake of an older title, but Dread was a game that surpassed expectations of a Fusion remake and instead delivered one of the most solid, fluid, and rewarding Metroid games to exist.

Taking a page out of Samus Returns' book in control and gameplay, Dread perfected the free moving reticle its 3DS processor introduced. It drops you into a new world to explore with some of the most nefarious lore in a Nintendo game, even for Metroid standards. The dark, foreboding atmosphere is back and the navigation once again is top notch! I'm always impressed on how well designed Metroid maps are and how much forethought went into them to prevent you from getting soft locked. The attention to detail is very praise worthy.

While slightly more difficult than most 2D Metroids, Dread feels completely fair, if not very testing of how well you're able to utilize all the skills you've acquired throughout the game. A lot of the enemies are tough, but unlike other games (*cough*Souls*cough*), you feel like all of your deaths were from mistakes you made that can easily be corrected rather than feeling like you got B.S.ed out of a fair fight. The victories are rewarding, motivating you to continue playing with new abilities to make your exploration more fun; you'll want to keep playing despite its difficulty, especially towards new players to the Metroid series. I would not recommend this be the first 2D Metroid game people play, as I feel like saving this game for last in your Metroid journey will help you appreciate the evolution the series has gone through and see how the controls have evolved.

Story-wise, there's so much shown here to connects so many events together from previous games. It may not be the most seamless and flawless story and at times feels like a couple of things have been retconned, but that doesn't take away from the subtle story telling hints you find along the way and uncovering the behind-the-scenes lore that fans have only theorized about previously. It's not perfect, but it fills a gap and it's a satisfying story that unmasks possibly my new favorite villain in the Metroid universe!

This is a definite must-own game for the Switch! It's a game that not only the series needed, but the console needed as well. While fans were rain dancing for updates about Metroid Prime 4, they were delivered with one of the greatest 2D platformers ever made, let alone on the Switch! The pride and passion put into the game is commendable and makes me confident to know that the Metroid franchise is in good, loving hands.

Simply yes, very much so. Metroid Dread brings the classic Metroidvania gameplay, (which has recently become even more popular with games such as Hollow Knight and Ori) and takes it to a whole new level with amazing never before seen gameplay features. Samus begins finding herself in the multi-level planet ZDR with the goal of escaping back to her ship. After being attacked, she wakes up without any of her abilities other then a basic blaster and missiles. Then you begin, the game throws you right into the excitement immediately. The first few hours of the game can feel a little bit too linear, but as you progress and get more abilities the world starts to open up and make you feel like you can go almost anywhere. Of course, classic abilities like the morph ball and bombs make a return, but brand new are the Aeon abilities which allow all new gameplay options never before seen in the series. The Aeon abilities use the Aeon gage which is always on screen and is a bar that when is full allows you to use your abilities. This bar system keeps them from being too powerful. All of the abilities and movement options are seamless to control and feel great to pull off. The moment to moment gameplay will have you exploring the various areas, and destroying enemies. Learning enemy patterns and how to counter them is key to taking them down fast. The vast areas might make you feel lost and not know where to go, but the map system helps you figure out where you are, and places you haven’t yet been, which helps you seek out places to go. There are two major parts of the gameplay that bring Metroid Dread to the next level, and those are the boss fights and E.M.M.I. zones. The E.M.M.I. zones are by far the most unique and interesting part of the game. Basically a massive part of the map (which you’ll know you’re in because of the E.M.M.I. doors) where a robotic creature named, the E.M.M.I. lives with one goal, destroy samus. If the E.M.M.I. catches up to you, YOU WILL DIE, you have 2 very small windows to counter but they are insanely hard to pull off so don’t rely on it. The E.M.M.I. zones really add a nice change of pace from the rest of the game that is heavily appreciated. Now the most challenging part of Metroid Dread: the boss battles. Some of the most challenging boss fights I’ve ever done in a Nintendo game are these… so hard but very fair at the same time. You get a savepoint right before each boss battle so you can keep trying as much as you’d like. This means that you get multiple attempts to learn the bosses attack patterns until you master it and can do the battle in one run. This simple feature can keep the fights fun, yet insanely challenging. To finish off, the games presentation. The backgrounds of each room really helps immerse you in the experience and its really wonderful to see so much detail in every part of the map the visuals are just absolutely stunning. The game has a few instances where it seamlessly transitions between gameplay and cutscene, sadly the cutscenes run in 30fps while the rest of the game is 60fps. Its not a big deal, but it is very noticeable. One of the biggest weaknesses is the music, none of it is bad, but theres also no standout hits which is disappointing considering how good some of the past metroid games soundtracks are. But the music doesn’t take away from the experience. In conclusion, Metroid Dread brings a satisfying gameplay loop, challenging bosses, and beautiful art direction, I’m excited to see the future of the series! Expand

The benchmark for every side-scrolling Metroid game is Super Metroid, so I played through both Dread and Super Metroid back to back. They are worlds apart on normal difficulty. Sure, the control scheme of super was clunky (with the shoulder buttons doing angle up/ angle down aiming, a run button b/c D-pad, and the select button changing weapons) but that's about the only thing that made it any more difficult, and that's something you'll get used to with a little time. Dread has a great control scheme, but unfortunately there are 6 enemies with plot armor that can one shot you no matter how many energy tanks you pick up and you have no choice but to try and bypass them because none of your weapons will damage them until you can get the one thing that penetrates their plot armor, and it's a one-off, so you have to redo that for each one. - not fun

All I wanted was Super Metroid with better graphics and control scheme, but they had to ruin it. Try again Nintendo, I'm sure you could do it if you tried.
