This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Metroid Dread is a serviceable return to a classic video game series.
Around 19 years after the release of Metroid Fusion, this game is a perfect return to the series. A lot of the old powerups return, as well as some new ones. Flash Shift and Phantom Cloaks are great additions, as are the Storm Missiles. Both the EMMIs and Raven Beak are great villains that change up the formula of having to fight Ridley over and over, and the return of Kraid was a neat surprise as well.

My one gripe with it is are how underutilized some items in the game are, such as the Cross Bombs or the Diffusion Beam, which only have a few puzzles for them and not much else. Still, all around great game that I highly recommend and arguably one of the best Metroid games.

Being able to cohesively move, jump, and evade while attacking is something to behold. This is how a hardened, badass, and agile bounty hunter like Samus should feel like. My one and only gripe with this is that the music isn’t memorable to me whatsoever. Metroid has always had some catchy tunes, but this just doesn’t have that. It’s great, it’s fun, it’s Metroid, just get it and enjoy! Expand

Its an amazing Metroid entry that really opens up on lore and story while retaining the classic Metroid gameplay.

Samus moves and controls like a dream and that's good considering this is a tough game. Not hollowknight hard but it is more difficult than other entries.

You do get better and better and the repeatability is honestly pretty high and will have you moving the difficulty up.

The bosses are always challenging, and a little unfair at times, but that always makes then satisfying to beat (when they don't throw repeat boss encounters at you). The enemy design is fresh, the story is a fascinating continuation of Fusion's themes and the pace almost never slows down in the wrong places. Seems like a 10/10, right? Well, note how I said 'almost' in terms of pacing. Yeah, the game slows down its brisk pace in the middle after a very important plot development. It does pick the ball back up again after another plot development. I also kind of wish the E.M.M.I. were used more effectively. I mean, their a great addition to the game, and Dead would definitely be lesser without them, but after the first playthrough, they lose their 'dread', and while you can still get tense scenarios, its a shame that the E.M.M.I. don't adapt all that well to your steadily increasing movement capabilities. Also the music is mostly forgettable, although I do like how little of it remixes past themes. But this is definitely my favourite Switch game since 2018. Expand

Probably the best Metroid game to date. The controls are very responsive and fluid, the graphics and art style are beautiful, the story and cutscenes are interesting, and the boss fights are difficult and very rewarding! The EMMI sequences are the best part of the game in my opinion, an improvement on the SA-X concept from Fusion.

The beautiful visuals, the amazing integration of camera movements that give this side-scrolling game so much depth cinematic gravitas, the story that connects the pieces of the other games, the moody atmosphere of the sound design and music, the buttery smooth controls and combat mechanisms, and Samus' new abilities.

There are some things that keep this from being a perfect game, in my opinion. While I loved the concept of being chased by an indomitable foe akin to the experience teased in Fusion and in the Aliens franchise Metroid was inspired by, I never got quite the same sense of fear. I never felt dread in the sci-fi horror genre sense of the word. The E.M.M.I. are panic-inducing and because they are confined to marked zones, they came to feel like more of an annoyance than a scary experience that might pop up unexpectedly (I would've preferred the latter). I didn't really care for the presentation of her ship's computer, Adam, as compared to this game's predecessor, Fusion. I found that there was a lack of true exploration until you get far into the game. Even then, at any given point in the game I found that I was confined to a set path due to the set of complex locks that might open or close at each point in your progress. I also wish it was easier to navigate the labyrinth-like map, wish that you could teleport from one area to a distant area rather than just having lots of conduits between areas that are adjacent to each other. The game is also very difficult, particularly the bosses and E.M.M.I. zones. As long as you go into them knowing that you will die a lot and have to memorize patterns and windows of opportunity, you can avoid much frustration. However, once you do master the boss patterns, it is exhilarating.

I mention a lot of gripes. But I was filled with awe throughout my experience with this game regardless. With a lot of patience, I found it to be a great overall experience.

This game is fantastic, it really is! I don't know why, but Nintendo really has an edge when it comes to creating compelling games that are fun to play. They never seem to have the most powerful hardware anymore, but they still manage to deliver time and time again. Metroid Dread is no exception to this rule either.

Going into it, it's simply the best looking Metroid of the bunch and the cutscenes are great too. You would be hard pressed to show me any game that is getting more out of the hardware it is coded for than this.

There's even quick kills for some of the harder bosses if you're struggling and overall the game play is very good.

Excellent controls, blissfully fluid and satisfying movement, challenging but fair combat, fun puzzle mechanics, wonderfully satisfying upgrades and devilishly clever level design. This game got me to go back and play all the other Metroids, and this led to me finally playing what is now one of my favorites of all time, Metroid Prime 1. My two cents on the difficulty: It is unbelievably refreshing to have a challenging, first-party Nintendo game and I don’t think the game would work the same without its level of challenge. I mean, the game is called “Dread”; you’re supposed to feel powerless. But having said that, you aren’t *actually* powerless. All boss attacks have clear tells and it feels so good to learn the patterns and mop the floor with them after learning. Checkpoints for bosses and enemy encounters are extremely generous, so it just feels like each death is another learning experience, and it feels SO incredibly rewarding to progress through this game as a result of the challenge. I think the difficulty level is perfect, and that’s coming from someone who’s never played more than an hour of a Metroid game before, and doesn’t have the design language or mechanical staples in their head. I really hope some of the game journalist reviews calling the game too hard don’t sway Nintendo for the next one. The fans love it! Expand

I had fun playing it, I enjoy the general mechanics of it. I got stuck a few times, and solutions were very unintuitive. It's very frustrating at the times. EMMIs are just annoying - it's not a good stealth design. Some decisions regarding controls are just awful. you can transition from walk / run into ball - you need to stop to do that, which is ridiculous in such dynamic game. Often controls felt unresponsive - often I couldn't duck or enable rockets in time, because game was not reacting on my input. Nintendo also forgot, that there is another joystick on switch, and you run and aim with just 1 stick, like a simpleton. To double jump its not enough to press jump twice - you also need directional, which is very unintiitive too. I don't think many people actually finished the game, because last boss is crazy difficult for some reason.

Metroid Dread feels like a modern sequel to Super Metroid. The game really stands out in the gameplay which is very true to the series, everything from the exploration, the backtracking, and the problem solving (which I think is the more appropriate term in these games, as opposed to puzzles). Everything feels very true to the series, including the difficulty. I found myself dying a lot, but I never got frustrated because I enjoyed the sense of progression as you figure out the patterns of the enemies and bosses. The gameplay and controls are super tight and well designed and everything looks and feels silky smooth. The controls feel particularly tight once you unlock all of the abilities, you really feel in control over Samus in the environment. However, the game did take a hit in the atmosphere. While the graphics are decent, the setting does not do the game any favors because most of it is that industrial setting that does not vary that much throughout the game. The music also adds to the inability to differentiate between areas of the game, as it is incredibly forgettable. But the part of the game that really annoyed me the most were the EMMI sequences. They are so bad, they really feel like they are 50% luck based on where the EMMI spawns, and the fact that they are so frequent really interrupts from the sense of exploration that Metroid games are always about. Metroid games usually have great atmosphere, whether it is created by the music or subtle design in the levels, this game unfortunately lacks that atmosphere that really pulls you in, and replaces them with pretty frustrating EMMI sections. All in all, its a fantastic game and a very exciting release for fans of the old 2D Metroid games, but it does fall short in several areas which takes away from the elements that makes the series great. I was very much into the first half of the game, but the second half really lost my interesting because of the boring atmosphere and the repetitive bosses, the only thing that really kept me entertained was the extremely precise controls. It’s a great game, but it was lacking in many ways. Expand

The game is a classic Metroid experience. The graphics are top notch, the atmosphere is outstanding and the EMMIs add a lot of suspense. Sometimes it's a bit confusing to find the right path, but aside from that, the game has no flaws. A contender for GOTY.

I got a noticeable framerate drop just once, on a boss fight, which made it harder than it should have been but nothing too weighable.
At last, this opus is a must play for any Metroid fan and a solid entry for those who don't know it yet.

Metroid Dread comes nearly 20 years after Fusion as a sequel, and unfortunately it feels like it has aged badly in those 20 years.

The graphics are actually where it shows some promise. The detail on backgrounds, models and textures allow Dread to excel where Fusion was limited by technology at the time. The downside is that there I quite a bit of repetition and predictability. You face the same graphical themes as yesteryear, traversing through lava, ice, oceanic and other familiar environments that do not really scream imagination. One specific issue to note is that I found the design of the map to be absolutely dreadful: a real clusterbomb of colours and shapes amounting to a ghastly eyesore.

The gameplay is where the game becomes a tedious act in frustration and repetition. I will make a special point around the EMMIs. I found them to be absolutely stupid and irritating. They are invincible and kill you with an unfair quick-time event. This does not add dread or suspense to the game. It’s just really irritating when you have to run and die repeatedly because of one little slip-up. In Fusion the SA-X was handled much more sparingly and was more effective as a result.

Then we have the other dreadful element – the level design. Metroid has always been about exploration, but never before have I been so bored and irritated by having to traverse long distances on the map and getting lost because the game gives you almost zero direction most of the time.

I do give kudos for the addition of the parry mechanic, even if it is likely stolen from Dark Souls. It really truncates tedious battling with minor enemies.

Getting upgrades feels great as you can do new things, but it’s also the same formular Metroid has been regurgitating for decades now. This is intertwined with the story; Mario, Zelda and Samus all seem to be living through Groundhog Day as every single game has the same premise – Samus goes to strange location curiously lacking in a back-up plan, inevitably gets attacked and loses all her powers. I suppose we don’t really play these games for the story, but a bit of creativity wouldn’t hurt either.

Overall, Metroid Dread is a great game if this was the early 2000s. In 2021 the only thing it really has going for it is the Metroid branding. There are amply MetroidVanias out there now and I struggle to recommend Dread as one of them when I recall enjoying myself so much more with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which is a cheaper indie effort that really puts Metroid to shame with its AAA budget and price-tag.

II want to first start of by saying that this is my very first Metroid game that I have completed and have wanted to complete. I played Super Metroid, but I never felt like actually wanting to beat the game and was super unfocused, so I never beat that game. Now with that out of the way, I want to say that this game is absolutely amazing! Seeing this game be revealed, I knew I wanted it. I was not a Metroid fan before I played the game, but now I feel like I should try to beat every game! It's an absolutely revolutionary title, having gameplay and level design similar to that of older Metroid games (so I have been told by my friends) while also adding in exciting new things to the table.

First and foremost, the feel of the game is amazing! I cannot stress this enough! Every button feels perfectly mapped, Samus feels amazing to control, and the ease of using all her gadgets feels extremely natural! For those who may have heard a certain game developer say that the game must be played on a Pro Controller, please note that this is not the case and that I played both on gripped Joycons and handheld and the game works best on both. Gameplay consists of jumping and shooting projectiles and enemies while also trying to navigate on where you need to go. Although this can sound boring, it is indeed not, and the feeling of shooting every enemy in sight and focusing on your surroundings to navigate the world is exciting, and this is exactly what kept me hooked to the end.

Graphically, this game is without a doubt the best looking game on the Switch. I have played this game both on my 4K TV and on handheld (on a launch day Nintendo Switch with 720p display), and they both look absolutely amazing. It's extremely polished, with some boss fights showing some of the best graphics in the game. These moments sometimes look like they rival graphics of games on PS4 Pro or even some PS5 games (although, this one is much more of a stretch).

The story is very interesting, to say the least. This is my first Metroid game, but I did see a recap video which helped me catch up. For those who want to experience the complete story before playing this game, please note that this is the fifth game in the main timeline and that there are 7 other games that you should play if you really want to experience the complete story (I will link an image to the timeline at the bottom of this review). There are not many story cutscenes in the game, and yet the story is as engaging and action-packed as I anticipated.

Finally, I want to say that this game is insanely difficult. I will not get into the details of what makes this game hard, but it is definitely the type of game that requires prior Metroidvania experience if you want to beat it with no sweat. That is the same type of experience that I didn't have, and yet I beat it. It took me a long 13 hours (as stated by my game file), but it was all worth it. The hard difficulty of the game is pretty basic for how most hard modes are (the usual take more damage, cause more damage), and yet it still felt a lot different from the normal difficulty. I constantly found myself being more careful around enemies when in hard mode.

Overall, this game is one of the best games on the Switch, and one of the best games I have ever played. This is a crowning achievement of how a modern 2D platform-shooter should be made and how a game should be made.

As a long-time Metroid fan, I was disappointed in this outing. I didn't like revisiting the SA-X gimmick in the EMMI areas. I liked getting all of Samus' toys, but there's nothing really new or compelling about her abilities in this game. When you get a new ability, you get to use it only once or twice before you're off to the next area. Controls for switching weapons and equipment seemed overly complex, making stuff like grapple beam swinging more difficult than it's ever been.

There are a lot of cut-and-paste fights, particularly with bosses/mini-bosses. All enemies seem overtuned for damage, and getting more energy tanks doesn't alleviate that. Too many common enemies require the use of the melee counter. The time and reflexes needed to play well are higher than any Nintendo game in recent memory. Rarely did I finish a boss fight or other battle and feel a sense of accomplishment. I usually felt relief that it was over and I had made it through without dying again.

Having said all this, it looks like a lot of people love this game and I'm in the minority. I give it a 5 out of 10, with a point of that coming from its pedigree. I'm not sure if the series is losing its touch or I've reached a point in my life that I can't commit to these types of games.

We are to mindlessly repeat deaths for progress based on pattern recognition as the game's core direction, however exploring, pondering, analyzing and discovering are mechanics that feel like they have been put aside. Maybe the map is just too small, and well too 2-dimensionsal. The weak sound track only diminishes the experience. You can only experience a game once for the first time. Nintendo was good at balancing that experience of discovery and progress, from finding that enemy weakness to stumbling on the game secrets in the older Metroid games. This one does not play like a Metroid game and this is possibly just a generational thing.

Only Retro Studios was able to create a Metroid sequel worthy of being called a Metroid game in my opinion. Nintendo has been for a while a dying company, particularly as a console game developer since the N64/Wii days. So they concede and let MercurySteam patch their holes and take the hate. Nintendo games are supposed to be fun. This was their only redeeming quality as a game developer. At least Nintendo was able to gamble on the future of their francize in the hands of people who brought us Turok. Instead they direct and create an archaic, frustrating, and arguably outdated game that feels mediocre today. This is a genuine cop out, a lack of vision. The Other M was more of a Metroid game... wow now that is just something I did not expect to ever state.

I don't want to play Ori or some other pain in the ass 2D platformer profiteering on nostalgia. I want to play Metroid, a Metroid true to what the technology can provide today. The spirit of Metroid was inherited in Prime, not Fusion. Nintendo, if you can't produce, just stop already.

I 100%'ed this but I don't think I'll play this again 10 years from now out of fondness nor nostalgia. I guess Metroid is just not for me anymore.

Prime 4 - I can't dislike this franchise and hope for the best.

Very good setting of levels, details even in the small corners, successful diversity of enemies, Metroid 5 is amazing, as a fan I would have liked a little or a clue that it will hold samus in the future but that now is the least of it. Thank you

Sorry wait 10 mins first. Die against a boss? Best watch the cut scene again. The game itself is no better than the average indie 2D platformer and a lot worse than most. It Should cost $10 and not $50. This is just Nintendo milking it’s IP, there’s nothing new or impressive here, save your money. Expand

Un must have pour ma part.

An absolutely brilliant return to form that fully embraces the series use of non-linear progression to craft a truly unique entry into the series. This game also features by far my favorite iteration of Samus, fully leaning into her badass charm, while also allowing her to have scenes where we see a much tender side to her character.

Metroid Dread is a 10 hour action, puzzle, exploration game, with some tricky bosses, and easy trash mobs. The checkpoint/save system is very forgiving, and the level design is intuitive, so pacing is good.
Replay value is low, as there is basically no story, and little in the way of cool things to discover that aren't part of the main campaign. It feels more like a great GameCube

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I think of 2D Metroid...Metroid Dread really is at the peak in the series so far. Here's what I like and don't like.
    The Good:
    - There's a ton of sequence breaking.
    - They used every possible button and layout possible, there are many options to defeat your enemies. Can feel a little overwhelming at first, but feels incredible when you are in the zone.
    - There are "Secret" ways to destroy mini bosses/bosses.
    - The Cinematics/graphics/cutscenes are top tier for Metroid.
    - I love how short the game is actually, because it easily has high replayablility and that allows me to adore this game on a daily basis if I want to and beat it within 1.5 to 4 hours. Just to clarify, my first play through took me about 8-9 hours without 100% the game.
    - The controls are probably the smoothest and most enjoyable in this entry. Every action and move you make
    - There are parry mechanics, but you don't have to use them until the final boss. But if you do there are great rewards for it.
    - Somehow speedbooster and Shinesparking got a whole lot more fun and expanded on it's mechanics. And it makes the puzzles around them so much more fun to nail.
    - The difficulty is pretty hard when it comes to it's "Normal" mode, after that it's "Hard" mode. I'm glad it took this route.
    - The Bosses have moves that you can dodge or parry, there's nothing that you can't avoid and have a fair chance at completing the game with no deaths and no damage...that said, the game is already hard. So good luck.
    - I love how there is RNG in the placement of the E.M.M.I.'s. This makes every gameplay unique and you never know where those guys are.
    - Enemy designs are great! some new additions and old.
    The Middle:
    - I wasn't expecting a story, but I got one. Metroid typically explores it's story without dialogue and does well with both (excluding Other M here). There are great additions that made my heart sing and there are parts that I'm still left unsure rather than curious about.

    The Bad:
    - The music will disappoint you if expect really memorable melodies, while some tracks are re-used and some new tracks are really nice (The E.M.M.I. areas in particular). But otherwise the music focuses on blending in the the ambience of atmosphere.
    - I didn't really like the grapple beam handing in the game, felt a little wonky compared to any of the other series, then again...maybe I'm just bad at it.

Fantastic! If you played to older games in the series or not - this is what it is about! The game tickles your skills, while always being fair, because you keep getting better and better and it feels so good. To me the best ‚platformer‘ with the most diverse gameplay I have ever played. And it looks fantastic too! Genius game. Thank you Nintendo!

I'm a huge Metroid fan and love most of the game. This one is a bit underwhelming unfortunately and below what I expect from Nintendo.

When the game is a good old Metroid its wonderful, but then the EMMI comes and is totally unbalanced and so random, you just die over and over again. You don't have the proper tools to stealth or escape from then. And you have to do it over and over

You don't have the proper tools to stealth or escape from then. And you have to do it over and over again. What where they thinking. So frustrating.

Then the balancing is an issue. The bosses are way to difficult compared to the rest of the game. I don't want it easy (love me a soulslike and other hard games). But this one is frustratingly difficult and it has to do with difficulty spikes, where the boss battles stand out. The boss attackrate is extreme you often have extremely small windows to attack instead you are running, jumping, sliding phasing out of the way from the endless projectiles. Doesn't make you feel powerful at all.

the there is something off with the controls. The character moves to fast. You can nudge to move a little, if you nudge you probably fall of the ledge you are standing on. It just doesn't feel right and that is important when precision movement is required in combat and traversal. They got this one wrong.

I would not recommend this game. I rarely throw my controller in frustration. Whit this game I have done it several times. I would say play Super Metroid or Zero Mission instead of this one.

My favorite games in the Metroid franchise are the Prime trilogy, with the first one taking the cake. Super Metroid is great too, but I played that much later when it was packaged on the SNES Classic. It's a great game.

This is one of the worst Metroid games I have ever played. I won't repeat what has already been said about why this game is so marginal and non-Metroid, but I do disagree that the difficulty is a prohibiting factor. Metroid has always been hard, not impossibly hard per se, but the difficulty -- especially at the beginning of the games -- are what draws a lot of people in and creates a sense of investment and reward by the time you finish. Prime 2's beginning (especially the first time you go to the Dark World and fight the first Ing boss) is a great example.

Metroid Dread fails in nearly every category that makes the franchise unique in a world full of Metroidvania-style games. It's chock full of gimmicky QTE-type reactions and sections that feel uninspired and annoying rather than mysterious and foreboding. There is next to no exploration, and obtaining power-ups seems too twitchy rather than reliant on problem-solving or exploratory skills.

Metroid has always been a game about being lost, isolated even, in a hostile world. It's always had this feeling that at any moment, you could fall prey to an alien monster or some environmental trap. It's up to you, the player, to overcome all odds and prove to the galaxy that Samus Aran is the baddest bounty hunter, bar none. Metroid Dread, despite its name, does none of these things. I never once felt an ounce of fear, anxiety, or dread. Mostly, I felt boredom during the main game and frustration bordering on anger during the idiotic EMMI sections.

There are a few redeeming qualities. Controls are tight and fluid. It's got that Nintendo polish and production value going for it. The endgame is fun when you become an unstoppable force with all of your tricks, but it happens so suddenly that the first half of the game (when you are weak) feels like it was made longer just to keep the difficulty artificially inflated. The Chozo storyline is intriguing but unrealized. Finally, a game where we learn about and interact with these guys while playing rather than through lore and flashbacks. If only we had more.

Nintendo is laughing all the way to the bank with this one. What a joke. Don't be a sucker like me and pay $60 for this crap. Here's an idea: save yourself $45 and buy Hollow Knight on the Switch, or get it on sale on Steam for $7. It's the best Metroidvania game made since Symphony of the Night (1997). I'm serious. Hopefully Retro can redeem what's left of this once-great franchise with Prime 4. It's my last hope as a Metroid fan.

First of all, the maps for each area are very small, so you will never feel alone or scared. Second of all, the location of hidden items is so obvious that you can find most of them without any problem, and this takes the feel of discovery out of the game. Lastly, the platforming sections are just too easy. In the entire playthrough, there were only one or two parts that had challenging platforming and in other sections, you only had to jump once or twice and pass the location easily.

Boss fights had the same problem. The only boss fights that were actually interesting and satisfying to beat were the first and last bosses. Other bosses had only three or four attack patterns and you could learn all of them after a few tries (usually less than 5 tries). Also, the game gives you so many health packs and missiles that sometimes you don't even need to learn all the attack patterns.

Some people might say that if I play it on hard these problems will go away, but that is not true because these are design problems, and increasing the damage of enemies will not solve anything.

I would say the best part of this game is the gameplay. It feels very smooth, and you can run around the map super fast. This becomes even more fun when you get new cool abilities. Also, unlike most people, I liked the EMMI encounters because they felt intense in some parts and made the game more engaging.

Overall I recommend this game, but I think 60 dollars is too much for such a simple and short game, so wait for the sale if you want to save money.

Expand

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
