The definitive Metroid game of the Switch era, just as significant as Odyssey or Breath of the Wild are for their respective franchises. Does the classics justice while embracing new and exciting ideas.

This was my first Metroid and it's so good that it immediately made me want to play more. The tough but fair difficulty, awesome story, top-notch level design and progression, and some of the best boss battles I've ever played, these were some of the best 13 hours that I've spent on a video game. if you own a Switch, buy this. 10/10

Iam blown away buy what the developers of mercury steam did with that IP this is all what a metroid fan would ever had wished for.

Iam kinda scared what society turned into how can someone possibly give this game a 0 out of 10 man that's just unfair and I clearly see the lack of character there. Even if it's not your thing or to hard for you it shouldn't be a 0 at all. And even though it is hard, this game is really fair. And tbh I think every metroid game in the past when you were introduced to a new control schemed metroid game it always was very hard and frustrating to begin with. I think people forgot about that.

Regardless I had a hell and a ton of fun with the game. It made every aspect of metroid games in the past feel fresh and made it even better. I hope the developers will get another opportunity making a game with this ip in the future. I just can't wait to see where the series is going on from now on.

It's okay. The controls are fine and the general gameplay is good, if not a bit tried and true. The problem is that there are now many metroidvanias on the eshop that are just as good for far less ($15 instead of $60). This game isn't really worth the full asking price, but that won't ever be going down, since it's a Nintendo game, unfortunately. If you can find a used copy or borrow itIt's okay. This game isn't really worth the full asking price, but that won't ever be going down, since it's a Nintendo game, unfortunately. If you can find a used copy or borrow it from a friend, go ahead, but I can't recommend this at the full price of $60.

The one big detractor from the game is the robot chase parts. We've seen this done in video games so many times before that it's not scary or tense even the first time that it happens. It's mostly just an annoyance because it just adds extra reload time.

The map is pretty decent, but there is some fail. It's often a little too confusing figuring out where you need to go next. The rooms are mostly samey and the environmental design does little to help this. That's okay because the environment was never really a big part of Metroid anyway, typically having black or flat color rooms with enemies in them, but it does feel a bit lame when you have graphics this nice otherwise.

A fine enough Metroid, but there's better out there for cheaper now.

Edit: Dropped my score by a point because I'm already bored of the game after 6 hours of play. It's just too monotonous, the exploration is really non-existent, and the E.M.M.I. sections are just an annoyance. Go buy "A Robot Named Fight", it's a much better, much more interesting Metroid.

Ironically, this game actually got me to finally try Axiom Verge.

My favorite 2D Metroid game. While it lacks some atmospheric elements that all other games have in the series, it is the best-feeling, best-controlling, well-mapped, logically-consistent game in the series. The encounters with EMMMIs are tense and fun and not frustrating; the boss fights are thrilling and challenging; the ouroboros map exploration has never been better!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to absolutely adore this game and I've been looking forward to it for a while now but it has quite a few flaws that just makes it hard to enjoy.
    1) The game is just too expensive (IMO) It retails for 80 CAD (Canadian Dollars) (without the taxes included)
    2) The backtracking is tedious and totally not worth it
    3) The E.M.M.Is are just seriously lacking I was expecting to have them breath down your neck the whole game however that wasn't the case. They are stuck within their zones and after the first one (White/None Damaged One) you realize that they aren't scary just more of a nuisance
    4) The bosses fights are just a chore, they hit for a lot and barely take dmg
    5) The E.M.M.Is are pretty much all the same with barely any variety (They have slight quirks but not enough to make them memorable)
    6) Mini bosses like the Chozo Warriors are constantly reused and become boring and a pain to deal with.
    7) Out of the 7 E.M.M.Is you only really fight like 5 of them (The Damaged one is a tutorial of sort and the Red one just dies in a cutscene)

After I started playing it again, watching also videos about sequence breaking and how deep the game becomes if you really try to discover all the secrets in this world design and gameplay, I really start to believe this is a true masterpiece, and the game designers really did an amazing job expecting the players experimenting many different ways to complete it. At face value without context you would believe the game was filled with cutscenes that played for you but if you will simply see Samus manhandle a boss pointing her gun at it without firing a thing if you the player does not play the game.

You will be challenged, and if you think you broke the game to get something early you may find you will be rewarded for your effort.

Visually comparable to XBLA games in memory but not in actuality, the animation workflow is fast and fluid you'll wish to see done in other genres.

One of the few Switch games that support 5.1 Surround sound, though most of the music is atmospheric similar to Super Metroid's original scores, and simply no scores similar to classic or Fusion's rocking scores outside of rearrangements of classic melodies.

Basic first runs can be completed in 8-12 hours depending on experimentation, but second runs can be beaten in less than 4 hours, with some speedrunners attempting to break less than 2 hours as of this review.

The only downsides is simply being a game on aging Nintendo hardware, while native 720p in handheld mode the post-process free 900p in dock mode may look simply too crunchy on modern 4KTVs. Hard mode is unlocked completing the game, but hardmode simply just makes the enemies do insane damage but all still die the same as normal mode it's simply a mode to challenge hardcore enthusiasts and not recommended for clumsy players, you'll be able to beat normal/hard mode in the same time frame if you never get hit once.

Combat and mobility system are by far the best on the 2D saga, you'll just need a little bit of practice to adapt to them, but mastering Samus' abilities aren't that hard.
If I can find some sort of "excuses" to say it's imperfect, the only two things I'd say are soundtrack (fitting, but a little generic for such saga and music legacy) and linearity from beggining to end (that's debatable, since between beggining and end you have to get back almost always to %100 it)

Anyway, giving a 10 for those funny kids making review bombing, so I suggest to give back more 10s :D

It's very clear that the developers were deathly afraid that this game would be "too easy." If you enjoy combat that is brutal for brutality's sake, then this game *might* give you a challenge, but if you have other life skills that you'd like to hone other than gaming, this game is not for you.

I gave it a 5 because that won't hurt the game's success, but it will increase the chance that this warning gets to casuals who might think this will be and experience like Super Metroid. It's not. It's WAY harder.

The exploration is very well designed, you never feel as though the game is holding your hand, as the level design itself subtly guides the player to the critical path. Difficulty balance is another strong point, the game is certainly challenging, but is never unfair; the addition of checkpoints directly before boss fights and E.M.M.I. encounters saves a lot of time in backtracking and is a great quality-of-life improvement. The storytelling is probably the best in the Metroid series so far, cutscenes and plot are placed very deliberately throughout, and never feel like they get in the way of gameplay. The length feels just about perfect, there's more than enough content here and it never feels as though Dread has any real bloat. The game does end a bit abruptly, but this is a well established series trope, so it's not really a big deal. Metroid Dread finally brings the series to the modern era and is a must-play for longtime fans and newcomers alike. Expand

Just want to advise people about the play times.

The boss battles and EMMIs are challenging to conquer, and you'll need to learn to defeat them, which makes you feel great when you finally do. There's tons of creatures to fight. And the best part is the weapons and abilities. Samus has a lot of great ones returning and some astounding new ones. Perfectly delivers the powering up experience during progress but keeps you in alert with bosses that don't forgive big mistakes.

The game does not try to reinvent the genre but executes almost everything very well.

One suggestion would be a speed run mode with no tutorial, cinematic and item receive animation. This is going to be gold in GDQ events.

Perhaps even the definitive metroidvania. Although you can play similar, longer games from the same genre for much cheaper, none have the vast level of polish found in this game. It's clear from the moment the title screen boots up that the game is a triple A title.

I'm glad this game wasn't released on the DS as the movement feels fluid and precise with the switch's additional controls. I would like an option to use the right stick to aim, but it never felt like it was the games fault when I missed a shot or failed a parry. (although parrying an E.M.M.I was a wonderful feeling) I will note the shinespark seems easier to use than the last entries, however that may just be because I'm more comfortable with it than when I first played zero mission and fusion. However the inclusion of the shine spark makes 100% less plausible to new players and it's never taught in game, which was what made Super Metroid's level design go down in gaming history.

The loading screens for fast traveling are a bit long and broke the flow of gameplay a little bit, however they aren't really noticeable until you go back to 100% the game.

The difficulty is reasonably high, challenging but not hard, so it's not a game you should pick up for small children, but that's part of why it has an age rating. Adam doesn't hold your hand like in fusion, however he does still give you direction. A nice blend and it's always nice to speak to him after beating a challenging boss or escaping an E.M.M.I room.

I also think it's quite linear. Not a necessarily bad thing, and I defiantly spent less time blasting walls wondering where to go than usual, but quite early on you run across a boss called Kraid and with the map so closed off early in the game, you don't have the option to backtrack to upgrade your health as you've probably picked up all the energy tanks you can on your way there. The difficulty of Kraid was defiantly higher than he should have been at that point in the game, however the other bosses felt well balanced and genuinely fun to fight.

The E.M.M.I rooms where a fantastic addition and where I died the most. They are a fun extension of the stealth that made my blood pump in fusion with the SA-X. It trully feels like the perfect next step. I do hope they can expand it again in the next game, however long that takes to make.

The story was exiting yet fairly simple and went a direction I didn't expect. It's not required to play any other games before this to understand the plot, but I'd recommend playing at least Fusion first as to avoid spoilers in case you want to go back and play that game. It doesn't spoil any of the other games much and never mentions the prime games, but Fusion has a heavy impact on the story of Dread. That being said, the old games aren't very accessible at the moment unless you have a Wii U or a GBA, so maybe hold out for a fusion remake or port.

I do however think that locking a collectable behind an amiibo pay wall is unfair. They did the same with Samus returns for 3DS and it meant that I could never truly complete the game.

Metroid has always had a rough time with sales, so I hope that this game will be the one that brings the franchise out from Nintendo's dusty "to do sometime" list and back to being the third pillar of Nintendo. The perfect blend of Mario's platforming and Zelda's story and openness.

The new adquisitions, the slide and the flash shift, makes the game feels like a Megaman X in steroids. It justifies the fact that the boss battles are so challenguing and difficult, because of the variety of movement options, This difficulty in the boss battles would have been unfair in other Metroids due the movement limitations, so it is really fair to me ( I heard a lot of babies crying about it, GIT GUD).

    - Exploring an large alien world in a sprawling, non-linear way that encourages exploration
    - An interesting sci-fi story
    - New powers acquired as you progress aid you and open up new areas
    - Sweet, chill ethereal music

    What does Dread have?

    - Exploring an alien world in a strict, linear way that prohibits exploration and railroads you into exploring it in exactly one way
    - A boring, cliched sci-fi story that upends all existing lore for no reason and then shrugs its shoulders, giving you absolutely no explanation as to why
    - Small map with little to no explorable paths, and a map so cluttered with UI elements and unnecessary icons it’s difficult to read
    - No music. Literally, I’m not joking. Where is this game’s MUSIC?!

    It also has!

    - Multiple repeated boss fights
    - Enemies that instakill you the moment they touch you
    - A supergun mechanic that is literally a deus ex machina to kill another specific type of enemy and then it magically disappears again
    - Boring, linear puzzles that don’t challenge the player
    - Poor technical performance
    - Awful button layout with no option to remap
    - Retcons

I just…I don’t know what to say about this game. I love this series, but Nintendo can’t be **** bothered to put any effort into it. Go enjoy an indie game who understands Metroid. Go play the Axiom Verge series, The Messenger, Timespinner, or Dandara. Don’t play this rubbish.

The soundtrack is not super memorable, but it suits the gameplay and world perfectly. The EMMI encounters are amazing and some of the most intense moments I've had in any game in recent memory. It's the SAX on steroids. The AI and pathfinding is really impressive, and the EMMI animations are really cool. If I have one problem with the game, its that I wish there were more EMMI encounters. Of the seven EMMI in the game, the first is a tutorial, and the last is basically just a cutscene. I wish the last one could have had more of a chase sequence. Amazing!!! Everything I wanted it to be and more!!! Only downside is that we didn’t get this game 15 years sooner!

The game would be amazing if it wasn't for two major things and one lesser.
EMMI sequences, they are simply not fun.

The third, and not as big of a problem as the two above, is that it is quite linear. The game keeps blocking the way back to force you do into.a certain sequence. The old great metroid games didn't do this. Once you open something up, you are free to move around as you please.
Given these I think Im nice when I give it a 7.

Excellent game, almost perfect in a way. I played with my girlfriend and we were on the edge of our seat the whole time. The graphics are nice and evolve in a very satisfying way. The controls are magical, very satisfying and snappy. The map is sprawling and you have to get back multiple times to discover secrets with your new powerups. One divisive element are the EMMI chases. At first I was a bit dismayed by them, but they get more and more interesting/challenging and offer a nice change of pace. They ended up being one of my favourite things in the game because it forces you to delve in these areas where you are no longer in control.

One thing I didn't like as much are the cut scenes. At least some of them. Some of them felt very slow for some reason, but I must say that the boss cutscenes were all excellent. So its a mixed bag, but overall nothing too displeasing.

This is actually my first metroid, but not my first "metroidvania", I just learned about the genre with hollow knight and ori. It is also my first 1st party game of the genre and I must say that the quality is notorious. I'm just getting to know the lore and it's incredible. It will definitely make me go back to the previous installments. I think I still like Ori and hollow more, butThis is actually my first metroid, but not my first "metroidvania", I just learned about the genre with hollow knight and ori. After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
