However most importantly the gameplay is close to perfect. Controls are tight and the buttons are well mapped so that it becomes second nature to pull off any of the actions required. The story is the same old "Samus has lost all her weapons" deal (She really should be more careful...) , but this is of little consequence as the rest of the storyline is great. The normal grinding mechanic is punctuated by regular spurts of genuine panic as the E.M.M.I. sees you and starts its chase.

In my opinion this is the best 2D Metroid game so far and not only that but probably one of the best games of 2021 so far.

One thing to note is that if you have grown up on overly easy games then this game will be a shock to the system. However if you like challenge rather being told you are great all the time then you will love it.

Some people said the game is too short for a Metroid Game, but I think it has to do with the Map, in the first Metroid we don't have Map, in Super Metroid, the map was there but was not detailed. The map is very useful to know where you are at any time and know exactly where to find things like power stations, elevators, save points, etc and that make the game a little more "easy". For someone how played Metroid Samus Return for 3DS, may know exactly how useful is having this kind of map and how much may reduce the difficulty of the game, but if you don't wanna use the map and play Metroid in the old way, you can do it just don't open the map and that's all.
The E.M.M.I. s in this game make you escape in the zones where you can find it, and they will make you see the GameOver message very offen, but since they are pretty fast, space from them is very satisfactory.

People are complaining about the graphics. The graphics are fine. The art is actually beautiful. The animations are so well done they remind me of the first time i played the original Prince of Persia or Flash Back and seeing the rotoscoped animations. Dreads animations are site to behold at a rock solid 60fps in game.

Play control is tight and fluid.

Music is subtle where it needs to be and nostalgic and epic where it needs to be . Perfect.

People who complain about how linear it is haven't played it . That is just a fact. The game is a perfect hybrid between Metroid 3 and 4. It does funnel you to where you need to go on a set path when it needs to, but also completely opens up and lets you explore to your hearts content in between big moments. I honesty don't know how they could have done this any better than they did. It is near perfect.

The challenge is much higher than previous 2D entries but , its also 2021 .Games are just harder now and to be honest i feel like if it was any easier people would be complaining it was too easy, so I think they found a good balance. Tough but fair.

Too be honest the only thing that is keeping me from giving a perfect 10 is some questionable save location decisions where a part of the level will close off and not allow you to back track to a save point for a bit , and sometimes that is exactly when i want to save. So I'm forced to play for a bit longer than i want for that session to find the new save point. That does get annoying.

Other wise as a long time Metroid fan I couldn't have asked for a better sequel after waiting 19 years, and it is definitely one of the strongest games in an already amazing series. Buy it .

Honestly, I'm not the biggest Metroid fan. I like most of the games well enough, but I find many of them aren't worth the high scores they consistently achieve. In a year like 2021, where it feels like a lot of games are good but nothing special, Metroid Dread successfully provided me with the best gaming experience I've had this year.

For what it's worth, Dread is definitely the most appropriate title for this game, thanks to the horrific creatures inhabiting the planet you're trying to dig your way out of, and extremely strong robots called E.M.M.I. Those robots become increasingly more powerful as the game goes on, and become particularly difficult to deal with. Being chased by the E.M.M.I. is panic-inducing, and you'll likely die to them many times, which only serves to bring about that feeling of dread when you realise there are more waiting for you.

I don't think the game is perfect, but many of my complaints aren't anything too major. The controls, combat, bosses and story all feel great for me, and I took the time to get every possible bonus I could which took about 20 hours for me. I'm aware many people are comparing this game to Hollow Knight, as a single playthrough of this game is much shorter than that game, however I'll argue I enjoyed Metroid Dread a bit more than Hollow Knight, if only because I felt that Hollow Knight really started to drag on toward the end of it's play time, and some of the enjoyment was definitely lost on me because of that. Metroid Dread is condensed enough to not have such an issue, with bonuses for players that want to challenge themselves.

I'm about 3/4ths of the way through.

I'll start with the the good stuff. The graphics are great and the music and sound effects are very good. The movement and control of Samus is the best that this series has ever seen. I am enjoying the story as well. So your basic production value is a solid A.

There are many intense battles that force you to use all of Samus' impressive array of abilities. Most battles are pretty tough and you feel good when you eventually win.

Samus is a badass. She is finishing off her boss kills in style. She has all the awesome attitude you would hope for in the galaxy's greatest bounty hunter.

    Now for the bad stuff.

I've felt from the very beginning like there was a hand on my back pushing me forward instead of letting me explore and discover on my own. That's a HUGE loss from previous Metroids. The game usually doesn't allow you to backtrack easily or at all. I've often acquired a new ability and thought I would go back through previous areas to see what I can open up, but the way is blocked. And the blocking doesn't feel natural. Oh, there is a red statue thing I can't kill. Oh, this door is just shut. I guess it will open when I advance far enough. At this point I'm resigned to just keep moving forward. The game automatically moves you back and forth through the areas. That isn't how Metroid is supposed to work though.

Unless you are a top level gamer, you will die over and over and over and over again. I don't mind dying some in the beginning, or needing a few tries on a particularly tough boss, but I don't feel like a badass when I die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die, succeed. And then do that again for the next EMMI or major boss, and then again and again.

For games like this where you constantly upgrading, I take enjoyment out of finding all of the upgrades and feeling near invincible in the latter half of the game. But the difficulty stays pretty much the same throughout. Many people like that, but I prefer the extremely powerful feeling I had in the second half of Super Metroid or BOTW.

So for what it is, Metroid Dread is great. Unfortunately it has lost some of the freedom of exploration and the feeling of power as the upgrades stack up. It's a fun time, but ultimately lost much of what Metroid used to be in favor of more modern quick twitch fights and flights.

I expected it to be reminiscent of Super Metroid, and while I certainly did not expect it to be in the same ballpark as the ageless classic, Dread was a let down.

    The pros:
The game looks great, and has an interesting plot. The graphics are strong and the game looks amazing without suffering from significant performance issues. I have heard others complain that there have been frame rate drops when using certain abilities in the game, but I have not encountered this. Likewise, the plot is unique and without spoiling it, takes the game in an interesting direction that is tied to Fusion.

    The cons:
The control scheme is annoying and in my opinion poorly designed. I had hoped that it would be more like Super Metroid in which one could cycle through missiles, super missiles, and the grappling beam. However, in Dread, one has to hold down the various buttons for aiming, grappling, and shooting. This means that if one wishes to fire a missile while grappled to a surface, they have to utilize 4 separate buttons, which can become tedious and frustrating in combat. Aiming with a control stick rather than the control pad seems to make aiming a bit too sensitive at times, and the game offers no way to remap controls to suit individual preference. The other big problem with the game is the map. The map does not do a good job of showing where you should go, and while I do not want the game to hold my hand, it is extremely easy to miss a small feature on the map such as a morph ball tunnel, or bomb slots, which are not marked on the map. As such, one can spend a long time wondering around, being unable to figure out where to go next because the map is too vague, I understand that exploration is a big part of the Metroid series, but this makes it annoying and time-consuming. The game is supposed to be difficult, which I have no problem with, but there is a difference between being difficult and tedious, and this game is more tedious than truly difficult.

Overall, the game was decent, but not great. I hesitate to even call it good. It definitely has some strong features, but it gets muddled by the game's problems. I feel like this was a hastily created game to keep everyone occupied until Prime 4 releases. I hope that if and when Prime 4 does ever eventually release, Retro does a much better job than the developer did with Dread.

It just feels so good to move around and shoot things. Everything is fluid and snappy. A pretty impressive statement when you stop to consider that I played the game on joycons. The visuals looked great, though I was lucky enough to play this title on the new OLED Switch. The game almost felt like it was specifically designed for the OLED. When I put the Switch in it's dock, the game looked a little weird on my 4k tv. One last note, I enjoyed the Emmi portion of the game, though challenging it was cool to see something fresh. I could be wrong, but I don't think anything has quite done the same thing in a metrovania. The Emmi portion did give me strong phantom Hourglass vibes. Expand

My one complaint with them is that the map becomes a little too powerful in these sections. It pauses all the gameplay and allows you to plan out your next couple steps. I think the EMMIs were a little more fun before I realized that.

The combat is great, and most upgrades were useful in both combat and exploration. One particular upgrade was so powerful in combat that once I had it, I felt like I couldn’t go back. But it wasn’t overpowered, just strong. The boss fights acted as great checks for my combat skills, though some certain bosses were repeated a few more times than needed.

The exploration was also very enjoyable. That’s to be expected out of a metroidvania, but the secrets in this one were particularly good, sometimes being hidden behind optional puzzles, which are much more enjoyable than you’d expect from a game where there are no required puzzles.

All in all, there isn’t really much to dislike about Metroid dread, and any complaints were minor in comparison to the soaring heights of the rest of the game.

The technology of the game is good as well, with mostly 60 FPS during normal gameplay. The In-Engine cutscenes are OK, with 30 FPS and sometimes some weird animations and movement from Samus, which can be accepted.
The story of the game is somewhat predictable, but story never has been the strength of the Metroid-Series and is not the focus of the game.
The visual design of the world sometimes can get a bit repetitive, but that is rare and forgivable.
The map-design of the world is very good, and it feels very satisfying to explore and search for secrets, even tho' you wont really be able to do that for the first half of the game.
The difficulty is high but fair, which I like. The boss fights are challenging and the enemies deal a lot of damage, but drop a lot of healing and ammo as well.
The gameplay is exactly what you would want and expect from a 2D Metroid: travelling around blasting your foes, searching for upgrades, jumping and climbing, backtracking etc. Even some legendary boss characters from the series are back. The beloved sequence breaking is back and even encouraged, but the game is, if you want, very linear as well.
The new E.M.M.I.-Sequences are cool and hectic, but only really scary for the first time. They really can get annoying and frustrating later in the game, and they are obvious. They could've been hidden or mixed up a bit in the later game.

To sum up: Metroid Dread is a great game, probably the best Nintendo Switch Game of 2021. It is totally worth of being a game from the Metroid-Series and I would recommend everyone to buy the game, whether you are a fan of the series or not.

The Emmi are a good sequence and news, they expande the idea of Sa-X from fusion but make a zone for them instead a sequence.
The only issue in game some ripetivity of some powerful enemy like chozo warrior or the emmy, For the Emmy i think that was better to make them more different each other than they make.
For the other i think is one of the best metroid i play is perfect? No but for me the only two metroidvania that are perfect are super metroid and castlevania symphony of the night.

My History - Have only ever played the NES game without completing it, and have completed Super Metroid earlier this year for the first time, that is my entire history with the series.

Story - You are given story in little sections and with some cutscenes in the more intense moments, it is not heavy in any way and very easy to follow, even giving you a little recap of the story up to this point at the beginning of the game which is nice. I enjoyed it overall, I loved how simplistic it was and had some nice twists.

Graphics & Performance - I only played the game while docked and the game ran fantastic for me, only stuttering that occurred was in loading screens, otherwise was nice and smooth. Graphics were fantastic as well, a lot of the levels were very atmospheric, you could see a lot of care and attention was put into the backgrounds as you could see enemies leaping around in the background or the local habitat doing their thing. The game looks dark and beautiful.

Combat - If you are a fan of Super Metroid then I see a lot of similarities here but more refined, a lot of the power ups you tend to pick up are from Super Metroid but has some cool new additions as well, I loved the parry move which you can use on certain enemies to get some additional energy and ammo, this for boss fights was typically used as a quick time event which wasn't something that I cared for, but I had a wonderful time with the combat, never felt like your standard enemies were very difficult.

Boss Fights - This game has had a lot of attention for being difficult and yeah I can agree that it is not an easy game, but I played Metroid Dread before reading any reviews and I am not particularly fond of mean and very difficult games, but not once did I feel this was beyond my skill level. Boss fights is where your skills are put to the test, but even if you die, you will always spawn right outside the room you did the fight in, you won't respawn from the last save point, that is something different from Super Metroid and is a big game changer for me. I could jump straight back in and do the fight again, even if I were to die a few times, each time I would progress further and learn their move patterns and the counter attacks for them, if this is something you are not interested in doing in a boss fight then I would suggest sticking with more lighter games. The final boss took me 6-7 times to defeat and yes there was some frustration but each time I did better and better once I learned the moves and I felt so satisfied when I beat it. This is all dependent on your skill level but I feel the difficulty may be getting too much of a negative view when it really isn't as bad as other games I have played.

EMMI - The first few are fun, the more it goes on, the more annoying it becomes. The first few it is more fun to get caught and just run across the level and parkour your way to the exit, I found so much enjoyment in this, but later you encounter far less paths to avoid them, EMMI can appear right in front of a door you enter, the counter window to avoid instant death is not very forgiving, and I just wasn't a fan of having to sit there and wait for EMMI to go away, only to move a little and then have EMMI detect my movements again. This is probably the weakest point of the game in my view, luckily you don't have to deal with them too much and as I said, it is only the later few that really bother me.

Exploration - I really enjoyed this, some reviews I have seen have suggested that the game never gives tips on where you need to go so you get lost easily, but I disagree completely, there is only 1-2 times I got confused on where to go, but for the most part the game is very clever about leading you on a path of where you need to go, if you get a certain item then odds are there is a place nearby to use that item to progress, its about studying your surroundings and reviewing the map from time to time, and that is what Metroidvania-type games are all about. I thought the developers did a good job of not telling you where to go but leaving you with enough to still figure it out without any major issues. Level design is great in that aspect.

Music - Some really dark and ominous tunes play during this game, plus some classics from the Metroid series. Enjoyed the music overall and am hunting for that soundtrack.

Final Review - I think this was a fantastic game, had about 9 hours of playtime with it and completed it within 3 days between work and my personal life. I probably enjoyed this one more than Super Metroid but that is mostly because I felt Super Metroid had some elements that were a little dated or I needed a walkthrough to help me out, while this one I felt more in control of what I was doing and more satisfied with how I progressed. Give it a shot!

The story was incredibly hyped which is rare for Metroid and they nailed Samus' characterization perfectly.

The music, despite not being as catchy as the previous big hitters of the franchise, feels like a natural evolution of Fusion with a mix of the more grandiose flair of the Prime games. I just wish they included the option to lower the sfx and voices in the game to better listen to its soundtrack while playing. MercurySteam has really proven themselves after the great but flawed experiment with Samus Returns and I look forward to whatever they and Nintendo have in store for Metroid 6, hopefully in 3-4 years.

Unfortunately, after the first couple of boss fights... everything completely falls apart. Any progress you make is constantly stopped by boss after boss after boss thrown at you and you're forced to grind the same fight until your thumbs bleed or just stop playing altogether. The latter of which is what I did some midway through the game, feeling robbed and cheated. It's also painfully obvious the boss fights are only needlessly difficult for the sake of being difficult, the difficulty itself serving no storytelling purpose, but rather working against it by repeatedly taking the player out of the adventure to stare at the Game Over screen and then watch the same cutscene for the millionth time, or just skip it until you no longer remember what it was even about.

An otherwise excellent game being ruined by one incredibly stupid, yet clearly deliberate design choice is utterly baffling. It's not fair to condemn the game because of this, but the fact remains it's quite literally unplayable for casual audiences yet doesn't tell you that until later in the game, and the score should reflect that more than anything.

Other than that the atmosphere is great. Everything from the soundtrack is great. It all blends together we'll. The controls are a bit sloppy. For example, you can't use the D-pad to move. In any other game that would be a silly complaint, but it's a 2D game. It just doesn't make a lot of sense given how much better moving 2D characters are with a D-pad. The joystick movement is fine, but the heat of the moment it's easy to accidentally tap it left or right while trying to dodge enemy fire. It does work great for aiming, though. It really starts to show its cracks when you get more powerups and need to hold in buttons to do what you want. The L and R buttons on the Switch are already extremely small on the Joy-Cons and they aren't the best buttons to hold in for things like aiming anyways. Why not make that the ZL button instead? It just feels more natural. Also, why do I have to hold in the R button for the missiles and ZL button for the grappling hook? Why not just use the - button to cycle through them? It just makes more sense. It's not that holding in the buttons is difficult as much as it is extremely pointless and frustrating at times, especially since your normal beam attacks don't work on bosses. You either need to charge shot or use missiles, the latter of which is much faster. So, again, why not use the - button to cycle through weapons, since you'll most likely stick with missiles on the bosses anyways, then use the R and ZR buttons for something like the radar and free up the D-pad for movement? I don't get why Nintendo chose toap the buttons like that.

The cast of enemies is great with a fantastic variety that changes depending on where you are as well, which really makes the atmosphere feel alive. The E.M.M.I. are great enemies, and the selling point Nintendo was banking on, but after the first couple encounters I felt like it experienced the pitfall so many indie horror games fall into with the same mechanic in that it just stops being scary or intimidating real fast and sometimes becomes annoying. After a while the annoyance turned to apathy and now I just see them as minor obstacles.

To me this game's big selling point isn't the E.M.M.I. but the challenge this game presents. It's not the hardest Metroid game in existence, but it's difficulty is much higher than most games recently, especially Nintendo's efforts. Frankly, I love the challenge. And I also love the brief cinematic cutscenes that only take a couple seconds but help you understand how to tackle a boss or challenge. This game isn't for everyone, but Metroidvania fans and people who love a bit of difficulty will love it.

    You will die.

    A lot.

There's no mercy. Only dread. One of the few games where the difficulty actually measures up to how the game talks about how dangerous things are.

The tension is real. It's not "cinematic tension" followed by some easy BS designed to look scary but be easy -- it's tense because it's *actually tense.*

And it's relentless. Nothing is handed to you. Everything is earned. It doesn't even ever tell you where to go except in broad sweeping generalization like "you need to work your way up toward your ship." And I *love* that about this game.

Yes, there are moments that are frustrating. But there's no un-dodgeable BS. Just stuff that you haven't figured out how to pay attention to yet, or moves that you're not utilizing enough yet.

And if you don't like difficult games, I'll just say this one's not for you. Don't darken it with your "it was too hard" whines. Go back to playing Super Mario Odyssey on Assist Mode.

I have always been a Metroid fan ever since I was seven years old playing "Zero Mission" and "Fusion". Those were the last two traditional games we would get for a very long time until 2017's "Samus Returns", and one of those two (Fusion) was the last original 2d game to release. Fast forward ten years from that point, and I find myself at age 17, final year of high school, and finally a new, shiny, original 2d Metroid game, and even though much time has passed since I first played "Fusion" and "Zero Mission", Dread threw me back into the shoes of seven-year old me. I was over the moon just hearing about a new game, let alone Dread, would release in 2021, and the excitement has only grown after my play-through of the game. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is refined and perfected, the level design is complex and intelligent. As an experienced Metroid player, I found myself amazed yet equally perplexed at the world around Samus as I tried to find my war around the rich caverns below ZDR's surface. The game is one of true open-ended fun, rarely holding your hand, and when it does, it is done so in such a subtle way I never even realized I was being guided. The bosses in the game can range from either complete pushovers in the beginning (except for some repeat bosses) to complete brick walls in which I found myself dying and repeating boss fights multiple times. The EMMI (killer robots) serve a satisfying purpose in keeping the player on their toes and DREADing (haha nailed that one) the next encounter the player may have with one of these EMMI. The story I will not go into, but seeing all the story-related events unfold sent so much joy into me and so many cheers out of my mouth. The story serves a great purpose but never gets in the way of progression or gameplay. Finally, the uprages the player can receive all have an important purpose and are used in very thought-out methods. One minor complaint I had was how some bosses were repetitive, but then I stopped to think why there were multiples of these bosses, and that's when things made sense. It's hard to make a review like this without spoiling major or even minor plot points of the story, so I will leave you with this: Be ready to retrace your steps MULTIPLE times, and be prepared to be surprised as well. In my opinion, Metroid Dread is the perfect Metroid game, the best game Nintendo has ever made, and, remember this just my opinion, the best game I have ever played. Metroid Dread was the long awaited and perfect follow up to Fusion as well as a fitting and wonderful conclusion to the Metroid Saga. Where will Samus go next and what else may step in her way? We don't know what the future holds, but for now, let us let out a sigh of relief in knowing that Metroid is back and better than ever. Metroid Dread gets a perfect 10/10 in my eyes. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was Just playing Hollow Knight to warm up to metroidvanias again. It's still the goat

I came into Metroid Dread pretty negative because I saw the art style, and the rather bland trailers, and I was a bit worried. The E.M.M.I insta kill concept didn't instill fear into me like running from SA-X, one shot and you lose like 4 energy tanks, but still live, so you are forced to stay in the sprint.

But, the E.M.M.I grew on me in another way. Like gamer parkour really. I became less scared of death (because I would die like 3-6 times.) and became more interested with the vast use of abilities I could use to outsmart / outrun them. At first, very spooky, but then you realize you will just find baby mother brain, and mess their day up sooner than later. I did like the variance of abilities they possessed. The music was fantastic though, and helped with the tension

    Classic Metroid Tension: 5/10

This is a Metroidvania, so of course, I play for those collectibles baby! Plenty of missile tanks, some powerbombs, and a new to Metroid concept, large missile tanks and also energy tank pieces. I liked this concept, the more the merrier. I do wish Super missiles were a collectable. That was my main infatuation with Metroid Fusion, the loads of collectables, it was ridiculous how many energy tanks you could get. On another note, there was some amazing puzzles on acquiring some of the larger collectables. Primarily using your speed boost ability. The trickiest to master of them all. But very, very rewarding to finally get right. Was a huge fan of the creative puzzles to acquire collectables. Wish there were more though, and I sort of wish the area didn't glow when a collectable was nearby. I personally like it when you have to work for those hidden items on your own, and scan each room manually. I'll take it though

    Collectables: 8/10

Environment. This was my greatest fear. Getting a "Metroid" atmosphere with 3D art style. At first, it felt generic, and it still could be a lot better honestly. I wasn't really scared ever. And that's what I want in a Metroid game. Think of Metroid: Fusion in general, or the start screen of Super Metroid. Metroid Prime 2 anyone? All of these games had you teetering on the edge. A freakin' pixelated game is making me poop myself! I never quite got there with Metroid: Dread, and I thought I might with it being in the name. However, the E.M.M.I were a great attempt at that, but instant kills don't strike fear into you once it happens once or twice, it just becomes a standard case of trial and error.
The release of the X virus into the world, and seeing it all change to increase the difficulty of the other areas, and seeing changes in environments when the lava generators were turned off was fantastic! That was my favorite moment in the game; seeing the X virus at all was like: "dayum, its not extinct!!" Very cool moment. Some of the environments, especially the water ones were nice to look at, but many felt rather uninspired. Fire place, Water place, Grass place. Part of me appreciated this for Metroid Fusion nostalgic reasons, but Nintendo does this already for Mario games, we can do better there. The Chozo areas, much better

Mechanics. At first, acquiring abilities felt like "ahh man, I've gotta remember another button" and I spent a lot of time shooting my grapple at enemies instead of missiles or shooting a missile instead of sliding in a panic, but over time, I grew to love the buttons and the feeling of being a Samus. A good Samus too. I also loved just about every mechanic in the game, and that there are ways to skip certain areas if possible because you have such a vast set of tools that not even the game testers couldn't figure it all out!

    Mechanics: 10/10

"This game is too hard, its only for hardcore metroid fans." - 0, 1 star reviews. The game is challenging, yes, you will die. but it rewards those who learn from your mistakes, get better, its not that bad

    Difficulty: 10/10

I beat and aced the game in 10 hours and 56 minutes. A 60 dollar game. I think that's a solid time to ace a game overall and most people won't do that on their first play through, but I paid 60 to do that. Guess how much I payed for Hollow Knight....15 bucks full price. I have 17 hours in the game, still haven't even beat the game, let alone end game content. Metroid Dread is a great gaming experience, but not a 60 dollar gaming experience. Nintendo do what Nintendo do tho.

    Bang for Buck(Price): 5/10

In closing, there were some frame drops for a game that looks like maybe it shouldn't have frame drops. Story was rushed in the beginning, but made more sense, and eventually hooked me later, but not like Metroid Prime games. The final encounter was awesome, and loads of challenging at first. Some micro areas were very tedious in making you run all the way around, even in end game spots. Map was sometimes overwhelming, but large too!

    Overall 8/10

There are very few cases where I leave a game feeling like it was perfect. Probably TLOU1, TLOU2, SMW, Astro Bot, and now Metroid Dread. Even Super Metroid I felt wasn’t completely perfect which is fine considering it was revolutionary. Metroid Dread is seriously the peak of what a 2D Metroid can be in every sense.

What Dread introduces is portions of the game with an awesome redefinition of that formula - the hunter becomes hunted! All your exploration, traversal + combat abilities are now leveraged toward narrowly escaping aggressively intelligent agile and relentless pursuers.... Heart-pounding adrenaline spikes - what a rush! ... but

It leaves me wanting to know what if this awesome reimagining were at the core of the game itself rather than a side-dish - Nintendo could achieve a true redefinition of this otherwise stale genre. . .?

Metroid's always taken a lot of inspiration from sci-fi and horror movies (Alien and The Thing especially), but here, it's clearly demonstrated that it's more than the sum of its parts. Even compared to the esteemed Super and Fusion, Dread raises the bar.

Aim mode is hot garbage. Otherwise it's just Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS again.

Boring level design, ugly graphics, bland color scheme, subpar music, a focus on sneaking past unkillable enemies instead of exploration, and quick time events make Dread one of the worst entries in the franchise.

Best entries: Super Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid Prime.

On top of this extremely polished experience we also get to live in a time when a truly difficult Metroid game is a reality. Samus' increased mobility and her new defensive movements allowed for more intense fights later on in the game. There's even one boss with a legitimate physical combo. A lot of people have complained about the difficulty but honestly the game is built to where the difficulty can be altered by your own pick-ups. My game was extremely difficult as I had skipped a lot of items, the final boss destroyed me multiple times, but it was never impossible. If you don't like very hard games the beginning may kick you down but as you go along make certain to go for as many pick-ups as you possibly can.

    Some general tips:
The flash shift can't go through enemies but you can jump and use it over them.
The E.M.M.I will almost always walk onto the last location it heard you. If you use the phantom cloak, be sure to walk into an alcove close by after activating it to make sure it doesn't bump into you.
You have access to your entire arsenal after a counter.
Running away from an E.M.M.I is always a viable strategy. If you get too stressed, pause the game and scan the map screen for a way out.
The game tends to funnel you into the intended sequence of events, for your first playthrough its easiest to take the path of least resistance.
The game is replayable. Find a cool movement tech at the end of the game? Start a new file later! Who knows you might use it to get something early.

This game deserves immense praise, sales numbers that blow Nintendo away and a lasting legacy. A 10/10 is the only thing I could ever give it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is amazing. I love the exploration, as well as the background as one explores. The controls feel natural and well managed (except the E.M.M.I gun thing, it's a bit awkward).
There are times where the story felt a little .. guided, more so than I would like from an explorative title. I did not like or appreciate the fact that missables were highlighted on the map (even to the point were zones would flash if one missed something in a zone).
I have a standard of $1/hr minimum of entertainment from a game (so if it costs $80 I expect 80 hr of game play. This includes the time to achievement hunt, and or 100% a game). This game fall short of that, but that's ok in this case.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My first impressions weren’t great for the first 3 or 4 hours I just wanted to play Super Metroid again. But it took off very well. I like the story focus, not a fan that it was boiled down to Samus having daddy issues I thought we got over that in Other M. But otherwise the story is really nice. Graphics are really clean, everything looks amazing, everything feels amazing. It’s really fun just to run around, trying out a new power up. I don’t think there’s a bit of sequence breaks which is disappointing, it is pretty linear, but you can infinite bomb so maybe there are some. The final boss was hard as hell but very satisfying when you finally beat him and the ending is nice. I’m not touching hard mode with a 100 foot Pole. Overall good game definitely not perfect. But for the fabled Dread that we were waiting 15 years on, it met a lot of expectations. Expand

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
