This game does nothing for casual gamers. This metroid game is not much different than earlier metroid 2D titles. There are no difficulty modes until you beat the game and you unlock a harder difficulty. There should be an eaiser difficulty. In general, not only is this game VERY DIFFICULTY it has no appeal outside the metroid 2D base.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It doesn’t do the game justice to say that it’s a near masterpiece. Hit me right in the nostalgia having played previous 2D Metroid games like Fusion and Zero Mission. Literally the only thing I would have liked to be included was a section with zero suit Samus. I’m sure that gameplay would have been super fun given how the game plays with the power suit. The gallery makes up for that a bit though easy 11/10, A++, will buy twice just to let Nintendo know I want another 2D Metroid. Expand

However, I seriously hope on any future games that whoever dreamt up the final boss fight isn't allowed any degree of creative independence. I'll keep it short to avoid spoilers, but the final boss being a 3 phase slapfight with no checkpoints, I was so bored of the first 2 phases by the time I finally cleared the fight I ended up studying the details of the skybox in the background as I mostly auto-piloted my way through. This isn't the early days of video games where you were lucky if you could get 3 things on screen without massive flicker, checkpoints are a concept and should be used, I shouldn't be bored on a boss fight. Frustrated? Sure? Bored, never.

    Still I can't not give it a 10.

However, if you're either a veteran fan of the genre like me, or you're just looking for something tougher than the standard Switch release and are looking to try something new, then this is a MUST play. MercurySteam has easily crafted their finest game to date, and created another worthy entry to the 2D Metroid saga. The design and form here is so tight that I legitimately can't conjure any criticisms. It's simply that good.

On one hand there are some fun moments but on the other Dread commits some of the biggest sins in the entire metroid series.

+Controls: Very fluid, probably my favorite aspect of the game. Running has a good speed to it and the speed booster feels great, grabbing ledges is fast and easy, and the new abilities tie into movement rather well.

-Repeated boss fights: The first time you destroy the robot pursuer is pretty cool but its not something that needed to be repeated six times, the spear wielding enemies suffer in that regard too since they all have the same attack pattern. The few(only two) bosses outside of those are pretty good but its not enough to compensate for how formulaic it all feels.

-Terrible map and level design: Cluttered is the word I would use to describe the map of Dread. There's simply too many icons plastered all over the screen anytime you want to look at the map, its pretty sad that a metroid game of all things has such a sloppily designed map. The areas also don't flow into one another since they are all disconnected via tram systems or teleporters, all of which use loading screens.

-Forced linearity: This is probably the most hand-holdy game since fusion for pretty much the same reasons, there's very few opportunities to just explore because the game is always railroading you to the next objective that the computer explains to you in boring detail. The game even goes a step further by making item locations bright and flashing on the map so even babies can understand.

-Poor technical performance: There are noticeable framerate drops when you use the speed booster(probably why there are so few shinespark locations) and when you use the lock on missile on multiple enemies. I think the technical limitations of the switch are starting to show, at best it runs slightly better than the 3ds game samus returns but that isn't exactly a high bar.

Newcomers will like Dread but as a longtime fan of the series I wasn't impressed and at worst I was annoyed, but I'm sure the hype machine will lable it as "teh best gaem evaaar" so don't let my criticism deter you.

Here's my rapid fire opinions, solid 8/10. Fairly short... (7hrs first playthrough; supposed to be repayable?).

Great cinematics moments and overall atmosphere.

Surprisingly difficult in some sections (glad this game didn't follow the trend of newer nintendo games being dumbed down).

Sadly a bit hand holdy... (examples of which would be adam locking you in a room until you interact with him and elevators/teleporters being placed in locations that indicate you should take newly acquired upgrades the previous areas.)

EMMI were kind of underwhelming. Fun to run from but all defeated in the same way. (also wish that it was a bit easier to parry them when they catch you so the thrill of escaping could be more impactful, currently you get caught, game over and try again which removes the fear when you know you can easily restart.)

Boss battles are really fun and there these cinematic moments that keep the player engaged by allowing them to fire missles as the cutscene playout (it's a really nice touch).

Feel of controlling samus is great; fluid and responsive. Sliding is an addition to gameplay that is fun and satisfying to use.

Precise aiming and parrying are both important mechanics that made combat enjoyable (while i did enjoy using the parry but in hindsight can see that having a good chunk of enemies be easily defeated by doing a single parry doesn't make for the best combat experience). (Quick switching between different beam or missle types could have lead to greater more complex combat situations; Sadly a featured like this was not implemented, upgrades to weapons stack and aren't swapable.)

Enemies are varied and designed well enough with easily identifiable patterns and weaknesses.

Fairly interesting story that was able to characterize samus very well with just a few words and her body language; nothing groundbreaking but enjoyable none the less.

Ended abruptly? Don't know if there is more for 100% completion or if I missed anything.

Easiest way for me to convey how I feel is if I had to recommended recently released metroidvania games(last few years) it would be in this order.

    1: Hollow Knight (9/10).

2: Bloodstained Ritual of The Night (8.5/10).

    3: Metroid Dread.

    Enjoyed it, can easily recommended.

I was not expecting this game to be a masterpiece. Having played Samus Returns and thinking it was okay, while I was very excited for Dread, I was a little wary. Everything took time to grow on me. But once it did, oh boy was it an incredible experience.

The world and exploration are top of the line. This is coming from someone who's played Hollow Knight, Ori, and most Metroids. It almost beats Super Metroid in terms of pure exploration. For 99% of the game, you are alone and out in the open. You make your own way through the vast, huge world, with no markers or signs to guide you. You are very slightly guided by your computer, ADAM, but this only happens a couple of times in the game, and the hints he gives you are very vague. And the world of ZDR is fantastic itself. The way things link together with new paths opening left and right is genius. I especially want to shout out to the people who worked on the world, because it is so, so good.

The movement in this game is phenomenal. Controlling Samus is a dream, and this game sports the best controls and movement out of any Metroid game prior. It takes what Super, Fusion, and Samus Returns built and expands it in a remarkable way. Plus with new additions like the slide and dash melee, it just adds up to a great control set.

The presentation has been a bit of a divisive subject. Some people think the game looks fantastic, while others say it looks like a mobile game. You have to remember that this is running on an almost 5-year-old piece of hardware. It's not going to have the next-gen stuff that a lot of people have been getting used to seeing lately. Yes, this game would have paired great with some sort of Switch Pro, but MercurySteam had to work with what Nintendo gave them, and I think they pulled it off excellently. The lighting and character models are extremely impressive, and areas are filled with a ton of detail that really adds to the overall atmosphere. And don't even get me started on the animations. This is a bit of a hot take, but this may very well be the best-animated game ever, at least from a 2.5D perspective. The animations are just filled with so much fluidity and detail it's ridiculous. I don't think the movement would have been what it is without the animations, it adds so much. The performance was surprisingly good, too. This game kept a solid 60fps about 99% of the time. There were a few random hiccups in my playthrough, but it wasn't super distracting, and it was usually in areas where I didn't need every frame. It would have been nice if it would have been a locked 60 though, but this could be something that they patch later on. I'll update this review if that happens. So overall, I think the team did a great job with what they were given presentation-wise. I would have loved to see this on a more powerful system, though.

I'm gonna go rapid-fire on the last few things I want to mention, so here we go.

Bosses: Genuinely some of the best bosses Metroid has ever had. They're all very strategic, difficult, and look great. A lot of them are almost like a puzzle that you need to figure out, and once you do, it's very satisfying.

EMMI: Overall I was impressed with the EMMI. They led to some extremely tense situations, especially early game when you are pretty underpowered. But the fear and tension go away after a while. They never become a drag or anything, but they're just not as impactful. All and all, though, they were very fun and super satisfying to parry might I add.

Difficulty: This game is HARD. Like really hard. I was surprised by how difficult it was, especially from a Nintendo game. However, it wasn't too hard to the point where it was unfair or frustrating. They supply you with things like checkpoints to ease the sting a little bit if you die. This game never had me ragequit, which I will admit some games have in the past.

Story: This will be brief since I don't want to spoil anything, but the story is surprisingly good. Metroid games are usually pretty light on the story, but I was pleased with how this one played out. It hooks you in pretty well and has a very satisfying ending that puts a neat little bow on things.

Soundtrack: This will be the last thing I touch on. I am a huge soundtrack person. I love video game music, and I think it's a big part of what makes a game special. At first, I was pretty disappointed with Dread's soundtrack. It's a lot of atmospheric, laid-back tunes that I wasn't too keen on at first. But after a while, I could see why they made this decision. The quiet, creepy tunes really add to the atmosphere of this game, and I think they ended up pulling it off.

Well, I'm running out of characters so I'll wrap this up. I hope I persuaded you to play this game if you were on the fence before. I think fans of the action/ exploration genres will really like it. It has its flaws here and there, but what game doesn't? With all that, I give Metroid Dread a 10/10. Thanks for reading!

What a fantastic game. Nintendo proves that after years of others making Metroid-like games, they are still the kings. The world is beautiful. The soundtrack is gorgeous. The boss fights are some of the funnest yet. Hope to see more Metroid. Buy this game!

The people giving this game low scores are only because they are simply bad at video games. Everyone I've seen give this game a low score complained about it being too hard in some way, and while it is difficult, those players simply lack the skill to beat it. I don't like gatekeeping, but it is sad to see this game get a lower score than it deserves because people are frustrated at their own skill. 10/10, buy it. Expand

This game is an excellent metroidvania and an excellent evolution in the metroid franchise, controls and movement are superb with great additions such as melee counter and free aiming, great map design and a lovely way to put an end to the main metroid saga.
Totally recommended if you own a nintendo switch

Beat it in 11 hours, 70%, speedrunning during my first playthrough isn't an objective to me.
One of the longest 2D metroids out there and one of the best ones that might introduce well new comers and satisfy old fans, though it won't surprise me that purists will find it disapointing.
Challenge was fine, movements and sound design were also very nice and the lore was the most interesting

Had to subtract one point due to me not liking the soundtracks and aesthetically, the game could have looked better (but it's really really not that big of a problem).
Excellent game, buy it and play the hell out of it people.

Expand

It's satisfying, engaging, and compelling. Everything I loved in past Metroids is still there. The new stuff works. It makes me feel like I'm a kid back in 1994. Thank you, Nintendo.

It is a hard game, but it feels unfair because of the bad controls and sometimes you can't do anything to prevent damage, so it's just not fun to play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game sits well at a 9 out of 10, maybe just a 8,5 out of 10.
its only a 9 if you rly enjoy metroid games, and ONLY a 10 if you are a little unreasonable or dont see the faults of the game as faults.
likewise, this game is hard sometimes, so lower then a 7 is unreasonable also

    in general the middle ground would be 8 - 8,5 - 9

ive played metroid games for 20 years now, and i have played majority of them.
ive finished 100% items and the full story

here is my thoughts, i will spoil stuff, so read with caution

    --------------------------------------------------

first , this game fixes SO MANY of samus returns flaws its rly nice.
if you have complaints about SR you will see majority of them fixed here. trust me.
SR was to me a 7 /10 MAYBE an 8 if you are a HARDCORE fan.

    things it fixes

    -you can skip cutscenes
-free aim is fixed and is MILES better then SR MILES
-WAY less repeating bosses, and those who repeat are basically elite enemies
-no enemy that leaves the room
    -speedbooster
-crossbombs solve multiple bomb blocks, and you dont stand around waiting bomb by bomb anymore
-controling samus endgame isnt as taxing as SR where you have to fuse ur hands with the 3ds to play
-you dont have a mandatory perfect run, as you did with that one diggernaut hunt where you just have to
    nail it or die
-game looks pretty good, its clear and very smooth
-its actually difficult, its not busting ur balls like some other metroidvanias, but it sometimes it can get
    close
-melee counter isnt restricting you anymore and feels overall way better
    -there is some depth here

    ----------------------------------------------
things i want to return in future games

-storm misssiles, flash shift, cross bombs, scan pulse need all to return and become a staple of
    metroid games
-keep elite enemies, its nice having BIG enemies in the maps that are not boss enemies, just big
    and impressive
-multiple ways to beat the bosses
-sequence breaking needs to stay, and get a LIL bit expanded upon
-the challenges to get missiles and health where decently difficult, and i would like more of this
-i liked the amount of voice acting, it was rly rly nice, even samus talks in a respectful way, keep it this way
i rly enjoyed that, though it can be a lil more too from samuses part
-the map is interconnected, and that was great, EXEPT that 1 area in ghavoran, you can only go back to
the other half with a teleport to another map, then walk it back up, which is a big why.
    - recharge stations that replenish ALL energy and weaponry

---------------------------------------------- what i want improved upon -the ending is just ending... i feel there was a samus adam conversation here we needed desperatly like we had in fusion, this might be one of my biggest gripes with the story. i have unanswered questions about the end, and i needed them in this game. -more improvements to the melee counter, i think you need to look at DMC 4-5 royal guard, you can block EVERYTHING, that is something we need too, if its an attack, you should be able to counter it. even if its a projectile, and i dont even care, make it hard. royal guard in dmc in general is some realy high skill **** just keep it optional -more hidden and secret abilities like, i wish we had 2 secret bosses and 1 secret puzzle that unlock more stuff this can be rly hard, and could also reward some op **** examples diffusion missiles ( fusion), super missile beam combo, more flash shift dashes, screw attack flash shift an addtional beam upgrade, ball booster from the prime series to move faster in ball form, spiderball -additional content in hard mode, i think hard mode should maybe change some things up above i said give me secret bosses and abilities / puzzles, you could add them and new map pieces at some point, only in hard mode or fusion mode -fusion mode.. -speedbooster was nice, but i hate that is has to be activated, let me choose to have it always active or having to activate it. it was annoying to press that button all the time. shinespark could have less charge time, in other games you just shinespark a bit faster, it was less dramatic. -let me do my own button layouts, please. perhaps implement other metroid game controls as options to play. that be nice. -the game almost felt a little to clean and lit up it works for the emmi zones but next time have maybe a few more old dark abandoned zones that are filled with dust. so the air feels thick. i was missing this. ------------------------------------------ if i had to discribe the game then its much more fusion then super metroid. i hope now that mercury has cracked the code, next time they do the 10/10 we are so close to perfection,

It's hard to top Super Metroid, but this is another classic Metroid game. In my opinion this is a hybrid of Super Metroid and Fusion. The exploration is great. Movement is fluid. The boss battles are challenging at first but fair. The final boss is my favorite in all of 2D Metroid. Metroid Dread was worth the wait.

A true masterpiece and an instant classic. The Switchs best single player experience since Astral Chain more than 2 years ago. My only problem with it is the load time between areas can take like 30 seconds. For a game that's normally extremely fast paced it's very noticable. Nintendo should have released a switch pro along side this.

The best 2d metroid since Super Metroid. This is an entry made with Metroid purists in mind, who didn't like the narrative heavy and linear elements of Fusion. The game drops you in the middle of the map, and, outside of some brief cutscenes, leaves you to your own devices to explore the way it should be.

Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series.
